Virtual Center alarm: host connection state posted: Feb 25, 2008 1:18 PM

Hello,

I run Virtual Center 2.0.2, 50618 as a VM in my environment. I have an HP p Class blade cluster and a HP c Class blade cluster with all servers running ESX 3.0.2,61618.

My question is, it seems like that, after about 18 days of uptime on the c Class blades, I start getting intermittent alarms from Virtual Center saying that the host is disconnected. I will immediately try to ping the host and it responds fine. After a couple of minutes I will get another message from Virtual Center saying the host is connected and responding. None of my VM's go down when this message occurs but it kind of worries me especially since it only seems to start happening after the host has been up for a couple of weeks. I do not seem to get the same issue with my p Class blades although, to be fair, I have a lot more c Class than p Class.

Anyone seen frequent host disconnected alarm messages and been able to determine what is causing them?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, did you identify the cause of this issue you were experiencing? I am seeing a similar issue but with VC 2.5 and ESX 3.5 and would appreciate any advice you might have. Cheers.

Found this old post, but it was never answered.

I'm having the same problem on Dell 2950s. In several VM event logs there are "<name of physical host> is disconnected" followed by "Host is Connected". We haven't noticed any issue with the VMs, they seem to stay up, but the messages concern me.

I'm running ESX 3.5i u2 and VC 2.5

Anyone figure this one out yet?

Could be an intermittent network problem which prevented the VC agent (vpxa) on the host from sending heartbeats to the VC server. Or it could be that the VC agent crashed and was restarted. Check the vpxa logs on the host to see if its the latter

I've seen similar issues with our hosts connected across our WAN. I contribute it to network issues. Though I do find I'll get notified of a host going from green to red, but rarely get notified when the host goes from red to green.
