I see posts going back quite a ways regarding starting Fusion VMs in full screen... has this been fixed yet, or is scripting still needed?

Fusion 1.x doesn't support starting in Full Screen view and would require scripting. Have a look at AppleScript to Run Virtual Machine and switch to Full Screen View or Unity View at Login.

Fusion 2.0 Beta supports starting in Full Screen view however the Fusion 2.0 Beta 2 it is not a stable release and you should be sure to read the Known Issues with VMware Fusion of the VMware Fusion Beta Release Notes and spend some time in the Fusion Beta Forum to be sure you understand totally what you're in for if you choose to run the Beta.

Also if you choose to use the Fusion Beta keep the following in mind.

Here are just a couple of notes posted in reference to the beta and these notes are not posted without merit...

"Note: As with any beta release, there are known and unknown issues. We recommend beta testing only for those who want to use the latest and greatest software and can afford potential downtime and issues."

"Note: Bugs make beta software unpredictable. Do not run in mission-critical situations."
