I am looking at installing ESXi server on either a HP Proliant DL140 G3 or DL160 G5 server and wondered if anybody had any experience of this. I know they are not listed in the hardware compatibility but wondered if this was possible? Or would it be better to use a DL360 G5 with the internal USB port?
Would the HP 8 Internal Port SAS HBA with RAID controller be supported or are just the HP Smart Array Raid cards? Also can you monitor the health status of the server or this an extra plugin from HP?
Any thoughts, experience or tips would be appreciated.
Just wondering if you ever tried the installation on the DL160 G5. We are considering the same and would like any feedback you may have prior to making our final decision.
Thanks in advance for your input.
I just installed 3i Installable U2 on a HP DL360 G3. So far I have not seen any errors during installation. Plan to upgrade the memory to start hosting some test VM.

I was originally looking to see if this was possible before buying either a DL140 G3 or DL160 G5 but as I got no reply I gave up.
I am now looking at buying a DL360 G5 which is listed in the HCL. That may be your best bet or wait and see if the DL100 series is added to the HCL. Sorry i couldn't be any more help.
What model of storage controller does your DL360 have?
You might want to speak with your HP rep to see what they plan to certify. Often the vender will be supporting a model before it shows up on the HCL. The HCL should also soon be expanding in terms of seeing more certification of ESXi on systems that are certified for ESX.
I thought this model was in the HCL? The controller is a HP Smart Array P400i which I believe is in the VMware HCL aswell?
What will happen with HP's USB embedded ESXi will they reduce the price?

Your DL360 G5 - yes it is - I was referring to the other models you had mentioned. The P400i is supported for ESXi and ESX.
Prior to the price change, my understanding was that you could a unlicensed USB key with ESXi for around $50 (it's a quality USB key ). I would expect that'll stay the same and you'll just get your ESXi license from Vmware.
I believe it to be the HP SmartArray 5i.

Sorry Dave Long day at work I got confused.
I believe for The DL160 G5 it was the HP SC40Ge SAS HBA with RAID.
Is the HP unlicensed USB key this model 480872-B21. How does the free ESXi license work this and has anybody tried to do this?

Has anyone confirmed whether nor not the USB key without a license works with a new free ESXi license? Need to order either the $495 model or this $50 model for a development HP DL380 G5, but don't want to get the $50 model at it require a special license.
