NEWBIE QUESTIONS

I just found out that I will be helping support our vmware infrastructure, and so the first thing I am doing is installing ESX on VMWorkstation so I can play.

I had 3.5 update 1, and it had the pegasus problem,so I just decided to download the trial version 3.5 update 2 to see if that fixes that problem.

My first question is, does the 3.5 update 2 resolve the pegasus problem?

My second question is, can I enter the license information somewhere on the trial version so it wont expire?

My third question is, is there a "student" version that is a scaled down ESX server that doesn't expire?

My fourth question is, what is the proper way to shut it down?

THanks

Looks like your host's CPU doesn't support the required virtualization extensions or isn't configured to use it.
See ESX as a WS 6.5 guest

ESX 3.5 only works as a VM with WS 6.5 beta.

also the link you gave me says i am not authorized?
Then you have not registered for the WS 6.5 beta.

According to all the users that tried it it doesn't work - at least not reliable.

the underlying ESX may be working flawlessly, but have you tired to start a Guest VM, when you do your environment will crash and burn. this is also documented on the xtravirt site. ESX 3.5 exposes more VT extensions to the Guest and when these are passed back up form then pCPU through WS6.x.x, workstation throughs a wooblely.

If you want to install and run ESX 3.5 as a Workstation guest and then run guests under ESX the you will requrie the lates 6.5 beta, it is now public beta so there should be no issues obtaining a copy and temp license from VMware.
