DirectX 3D Applications Compatibility List

VERSION 106 Published

Created on: Sep 28, 2007 7:49 AM by etung - Last Modified:  Nov 5, 2009 11:58 PM by kbong

This is a list of DirectX 3D applications (probably mostly games) that people have found to work with Fusion. It is not for OpenGL applications. Feel free to add your findings to the document, but keep questions in the comments. You can edit the document by selecting "Edit document" under Actions in the left sidebar. Please try to keep your results up to date with the most recent build; you probably want to remove your own outdated entries to keep this document reasonably short.

This list does not guarantee that a particular application will work for you, and does not imply support from VMware.

To enable 3D acceleration, shut down (suspend doesn't count) the virtual machine and go to Virtual Machine > Settings > System Hardware > Display. Check the "Accelerate 3D graphics" option. You must also install VMware Tools. If you're using Fusion 2.0, remember to upgrade the virtual hardware.

As of version 2.0, VMware Fusion offers experimental support for DirectX 9.0 with shader model 2.

Column Explanations

Application, Version

Which application you tested, and what version of the application.

Guest OS, Version

What Guest OS you are using, and what version of the OS.

Mac OS

What version of OS X you are using (e.g. 10.4.11, 10.5.5). Note that there are a number of known 3D bugs in 10.4 that Apple does not plan to fix, and that 10.5.3 fixed a lot of 3D bugs. If possible, you should use the latest version of Leopard.

Fusion Build

Which version of Fusion you tried this with; for example, 51348 for 1.0, 116369 for 2.0. This information can be found under VMware Fusion > About VMware Fusion. Unless you say otherwise in the notes, it is assumed the installed version of VMware Tools matches the build number. Try to keep the list sorted by this value, newest version at the top .

Mac, Graphics Card

Type of Mac (e.g. Mac Pro, iMac, etc.) and graphics card (e.g. nVidia GeForce 7300 GT, ATI Radeon X1900 XT, etc.). Readers should keep in mind that Macs with integrated graphics (i.e. mini, MacBook) don't completely support OpenGL 1.4, which is necessary for proper guest 3D acceleration. As of Fusion 2.0, much of our internal testing is with the nVidia 8800 GT and ATI HD 2600, as we've found those have the best (i.e. least buggy) drivers.

Reporter

This will make it easier to figure out who to ask if other people have questions about setup. Also, get credited for your work :)

Notes

Anything others need to know, e.g. known issues, tweaks, links to HOWTOs, etc.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield XP Pro, SP2 10.5.1 1.1 (62573) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) InflatableMouse Intro movies stutter, Enter/Return skips them. Use vmmouse.present = "FALSE" vmx flag.

Mostly Usable

Applications that have some problems but are still usable. Similar to a Silver or Bronze rating on WineHQ AppDB list.

SimCity 3000 XP Pro, SP2 10.5.5 2.0.1 iMac (late 2006) (Radeon x1600) aanhorn runs well apart from some texture flickering in dialog boxes and interface
Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Demo\ XP Pro, SP2 10.5.5 2.0 (116369) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) etung Cursor has a box around it, some menus may have gray backgrounds (not sure if this is intentional). Camera sometimes jerks back and forth when moving. Other than that works well
Dungeon Seige Demo\, Dungeon Seige: Legends of Aranna Demo\ XP Pro, SP2 10.5.5 2.0 (116369) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) etung Minor problem with far clipping (lack of fog?), partial inventory screen shows through. Playable.
Dungeon Seige II Demo\ XP Pro, SP2 10.5.5 2.0 (116369) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) etung Box around mouse, halos around objects do not render properly. Playable.
Narbacular Drop\ XP Pro, SP2 10.5.5 2.0 (116369) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) etung Too much glow around light sources, poor framerate.
Ancient Quest of Saqqarah XP Pro, SP2 10.5.4 2.0 (116369) Mac mini (Intel GMA950) etung Occasional slowdown and sound stuttering, probably because this was on a Mac mini.
Spectromancer\ 0.31 XP Pro, SP2 10.4.11 2.0 (116369) MacBook (Intel GMA950) etung Occasional slowdown and sound stuttering, probably because this was on a MacBook.
The Sims 2 Vista Business, SP1 10.5.4 2.0rc1 (113392) Macbook Pro 4,1 NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT anw122 The game runs, the intro cinematics are a bit jumpy, can't change the resolution past 800x600, graphics weren't bad for the resolution but weren't good, the game was jumpy when trying to move around a lot; I didn't try to install all of the expansions, but read that the ones with Securom make the program crash.
Phoenix RC\ XP Pro, SP3 10.5.4 2.0b2 (107508) MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI X1600 256 MB bilboa Program runs, but at slow framerate of only 25-30 FPS even with display settings on low. Sceneries display fine but models' colors are all messed up.
RealFlight G3.5\ XP Pro, SP3 10.5.4 2.0b1 (89933) and 2.0b2 (107508) MacBook Pro 17", 2.5GHz Core2Duo, 2GB DDR2, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT darrylr G3.5 works if you use model aircraft (not helicopters) on "Photofield" sites. Moving clouds, smoke and streamer effects all work. The simulation (with smoke effects aka particles turned off) is fast enough to be quite usable on a fast MacBook Pro, but has some problems...
  1. Multiple Windows error messages pop-up at program startup, when selecting a new model or when a model crashes, "Error creating effect ShadowBlob2" and "Error creating effect ShadowAntiBlob2" regardless of whether Simulation>Settings>Graphics>Quality>Shadows Enabled is Yes or No.
  2. PhotoFields work, but traditional field are really not usable, scenery objects and aircraft when used on non-PhotoFields render as grey objects with no surface texture.
  3. Helicopter models display radiating polygons spinning in the plane of the rotor blades that fill the entire screen making helicopters unusable.
  4. As expected graphics performance in Unity mode is horrible, audio stutters, Windows error messages like in #1 do not display properly in Unity mode, but not important.
  5. 2.0b2 fixed this: Screen capture (Tab shortcut or from pulldown menu) from withing RealFlight does not work. Each screen capture file is mostly of the underlying Windows desktop with some garbage on it.
  6. 2.0b2 fixed this: Window>Show Title Bar has problems enabling the Title Bar, you have to use the mouse to "paint over" where the Title Bar is to make it appear when you turn it on after turning off.
Uru Complete Chronicles XP Home, SP2 10.5.4 2.0b2 (107508) MacBook Pro (Radeon X1600) cwalther Game is playable and runs very smoothly, but has moderately severe graphics glitches. Many objects appear black (for some, the texture returns depending on viewing angle); vertex colors and/or shading missing on some objects (appear at full texture brightness), depending on viewing angle; sometimes real-time shadows are also projected towards the light source, not only away from it; black beams from the center of the screen to animated objects; some objects with alpha-blended textures are invisible.
Auran: Trainz 2006\ XP Home, SP2 10.5.4 2.0b1 (89933) Macbook Pro (GeForce 8600M GT) Cool Games Runs now in 2.0b1 set DirectX 9 1440 x 900 32 bit but

First try was only for a few minutes but was usable.
I will be playing with more settings.
Civilization IV\ XP Home, SP2 10.5.3 2.0b1 (89933) iMac 2.66GHz, 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (Radeon HD 2600 Pro) jvhiii Plays in single player mode, but a little slow.

On MacBook Pros, it helps to manually set the game resolution to the screens resolution. Edit the "ScreenWidth" and "ScreenHeight" values in C:Program FilesFiraxis GamesSid Meier's Civilization 4CivilizationIV.ini and set them to your screen resolution.
Everquest XP Pro, SP2 10.5.1 1.1 (62573) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) glwarner Mouse disapears when not being moved and there is a box around it when it is moving - most of the time black. The graphics are a bit choppy. Cannot be played in Unity mode for the mouse does not work right - loses left click ability. I have the mouse bound to the window. Was able to play with out other issues. Have not tried to raid with this setup yet.
Dungeonsiege II XP Pro, SP2 10.5.1 1.1 (62573) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) glwarner Mouse is choppy and slow to handle.Voice over dialog is normal speed but the text is not - it is slower. Have not tested combat yet.
CSI 3: Hard Evidence XP Pro, SP2 10.5.1 1.1 (62573) Mac Pro (GeForce 7300) glwarner Voice over will sometimes loop through the same dialog mutliple times. Some graphic issues on certain sceens. It appeas the geomertry is off. Mostly playable.
Warhammer 40K : Dawn of War : Dark Crusade\ demo XP Pro, SP2 |1.1b1 (57919) iMac (late 2006) (Radeon x1600) aanhorn graphics configuration test passes, game runs with choppy sound, some menu/interface text corruption, some cursor texture corruption
Beyond Good & Evil\ demo XP Pro, SP2 |1.1b1 (57919) iMac (late 2006) (Radeon x1600) aanhorn very choppy framerate and sound, some scenes are rendered blurry and out of focus, minor graphical glitches in other scenes

However checking "Borders and Labels" or loading kml files that contain a large number of lines (several thousand) will reproducibly hang the virtual machine. Some of the lines are also often misdrawn before the virtual machine hangs. Often the hang also casues problems for the host OS with the host becoming unresponsive and requiring a reboot.

Yes and OK Google Earth is not a game, but it uses DirectX, and I yes know it runs natively on Mac OS X, but I need to run with code that uses the OLE/.NET API only available on Windows.
Portal: The First Slice XP Home, SP2 10.5.4 2.0b2 (107508) MacBook Pro (Radeon X1600) cwalther Game runs, but rendering defects make it hardly playable. Menu screen has small defects but is recognizable (text readable). Once arrived in the game: With recommended graphics settings: screen is black, faint red and green gradients depending on viewing angle, no geometry visible. With minimum graphics settings: some objects are textured with what looks like a normal map, most have no texture at all but just a flat color (including crosshairs, particles, light halos). In both cases: text characters rendered as solid rectangles, stays that way when returning to the menu screen.
There.com (DX8) XP Home, SP2 10.5.4 2.0b2 (107508) MacBook Pro (Radeon X1600) cwalther Fog is inverted: nearby objects appear foggy, far away objects clear. Own avatar is invisible.

RealFlight G4 Demo\ XP Pro, SP3 10.5.4 2.0b1 (89933) and 2.0b2 (107508) MacBook Pro 17", 2.5GHz Core2Duo, 2GB DDR2, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT darrylr The free G4 demo download barely works and is not usable like G3.5 is. If you do not change the default model the simulation will run however...

  1. Many tens of error messages pop-up that each need to be dismissed; at program start up, when selecting a new model or when a model crashes, "Error creating effect ShadowBlob2" and "Error creating effect ShadowAntiBlob2" regardless of whether Simulation>Settings>Graphics>Quality>Shadows Enabled is Yes or No. Many more of these errors occur than with G3.5 as G4 is obviously trying to render more shadows.
  2. Trying to change from the default model aircraft usually causes an application crash, either an "unknown error occurred" dialog and request to automatically submit a report to Knife Edge Software or just a silent crash of the application. Because of this I was unable to test a helicopter model (see G3.5 notes above).
  3. As expected graphics performance in Unity mode is horrible, audio stutters a well, Windows error messages like in #1 do not display properly in Unity mode, but not important.
  4. 2.0b2 fixed this: Window>Show Title Bar has problems enabling the Title Bar, you have to use the mouse to "paint over" where the TitleBar is to make it appear when you turn it on after turning off.

I've gotten ffxi working to some degree though some characters don't render without shadows, also chat box only works when its in full screen mode, certain peices of armor or parts of armor don't render, some npc's/monsters won't render but their names are there. other than those problems it works nice x.x noticed that vmware has the refresh rate at 85 hertz whereas my monitor is only 60 hertz think that might be the issue? at least with some of the rendering? looks like once those issues are fixed it might be completely playable. oh I'm using the vmware fusion v1.1 release candidate on a mac pro w/nvidea 7300 256, 5g ram with 2g's for xp pro sp2
sorry if im posting in the wrong area i'm new here

This is the right area to post such things, though it is more efficient if you add your comments to the document rather than commenting. Comments don't scale well and will get out of date, and a table is much easier to quickly scan through.

Under the Actions box on the left, you can select "Edit document". Follow the existing format (it may be easiest to copy another entry and edit it).

I'm running Windows Vista as a guest on my host MacPro with 4Gigs of RAM and two Digital digital displays. The video cards are ATI Radeon x1900 XT in slot-1 and NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT in slot-2. Is there a way to get applications such as Movie Maker or Photoshop to work on the virtual vista machine? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

1.6: Playable at lower resolutions! Though all of the text in the settings pane is garbled beyond readable ... if this is fixed then this will work 100%
Source: Nearly playable .. no text rendering issues like 1.6 has, but there is slight lag even with the settings turned down

Warhammer Online works with VMWare Fusion 2.0 release candidate 1 -- took me a bit of messing around with different mouse stuff to get it to work, but I finally did.

The first problem I had was that the mouse buttons appeared to be sticky -- I would right click on someone in game to talk to them, and it would act like the right mouse button was held down after that, until I clicked again.

In windows, control panel, system -> hardware -> device manager -> mice and other pointing devices
I disabled the 2nd HID-compliant mouse ( there are 2 on my machine)
(if I disable the first one, the mouse stops working altogether)
I also uninstalled the vmware mouse driver
and windows reinstalled a ps/2 compatible mouse driver
I rebooted, then ran services.msc and stopped the vmware tools
that's basically it I think for the relevant stuff.

One other thing I did, that I think was not relevant
I installed the logitech setpoint drivers -- but when I go into their settings, none of the mouse options are available -- I believe because it is not detecting a logitech mouse -- which is why I suspect it's not relevant
pretty sure those are all the details -- when I look at the ps/2 compatible mouse properties in device manager, under advanced settings they are the default -- sample rate 100 reports / second, wheel detection 'assume wheel is present', input buffer length 100 packets, fast initialization is checked -- the mouse feels like it moves a bit slow in windows also

anyway -- hopefully this information helps someone else get warhammer online working :)

Anyone familiar with UT2004 Editor? This should be working if you set the Mouse Preferences to Always Gaming mode...

Ok, here's the scoop on how to get Lord of the Rings Online and/or Dungeons and Dragons Stormreach working. Both games use the same engine, and the problem revolves around UserPreferences.ini.

If this file exists, you can change AllowFakeFullScreen=True to AllowFakeFullScreen=False. That should fix the problem and let you play.

If the file doesn't exist, cut and paste the following into Notepad and save as UserPreferences.ini. Save in My Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online\ or My Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online\. You may need to create the sub directory. BE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR CURRENT FILE JUST IN CASE!

I don't see Dark Age of Camelot in the Compatibility List, so I thought I give some info on how it works on Fusion. I have a 3 year old Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core with an ATI 3870 graphics card (I used to have a Geforce 7300). My OS is Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). So far I've been pleasantly surprised to see how well Camelot plays on Fusion. The frame rates don't drop, and graphics for the most part look good. There are a few quirks with the game; water and fire do not look right and certain effects (such as life-drain on a Bonedancer) our not transparent. Overall playing Camelot on fusion is enjoyable. If VMWare can get some the graphic issues fixed I won't ever again have to go back to Boot-Camp to play the game.

Following up on someone else's earlier post (http://communities.vmware.com/thread/146930) I'd like to know if Supreme Commander will now run in VMWare Fusion 3. Yeah, yeah, I know that even if it does run, it'll be slow... but somehow it's just the principle of the thing and I want to know if (slowness aside) it could work.

Oct 29, 2009 8:04 AM davidrivera  says:

I upgraded to Fusion 3.0. Titan Quest: Immortal Throne now works with no problems. Unfortunately, Dark Age of Camelot still has problems. I still can not use reflective water; all I see is a spiral pattern with no reflectivity. Certain effects such as life drain or certain flame animations are not transparent. I also had to turn off dynamic shadows. With dynamic shadows turned on, Jordhiem, Camelot and all the three major cities looked white with just a pale texture on it. When I turned Dynamic Shadows off the Major cites appeared normal.

Fusion did improve certain things. The game is certainly snappier. I didn't do any test but it did seem to have a faster frame rate. I can now see the compass which I could not do in version 2.0.6. Another problem that was fixed with Fusion 3. 0 was the ground lighting issue. During night scenes certain parts of the ground would appear as if it were day; this is no longer an issue. With Fusion 3.0. the ground looks like it should, with no problems.

Dark Age of Camelot almost works in Fusion 3.0. If VmWare can get water reflection working, and fixed the issues with transparency I won't have to go back to boot-camp to play the game.
