I'm with ChuckFloyd on this.. its a mess trying to upgrade.
MAJOR PROBLEM - My upgrade order DID NOT PROVDE A SERIAL NUMBER! I had no problems with the upgrade process allowing me to select my registered copy of Fusion 2.0 for the upgrade. However when I did the upgrade, the final screen confirming the order (after my credit card was charged, and the email that confirmed the order did not provide me with a Serial Number.)
Will someone at VMWare please help!
Ditto here dskok -- and now they're saying another week for my Fusion 3.0 serial number? Hell, i only received a 4-part activation code which is not a full serial number... The entire reason for buying was to have access to v3.0 ASAP...
Where is the Deal ??? - One time download with NO UPDATES or pay full retail price to get copy with 12 months of updates, NO UPGRADE DEAL HERE.
VMware Fusion Upgrade from Version 2.x and 1.x to VMware Fusion 3
Electronic Software Download – Start Using It Instantly $39.99
OK - PROBLEM SOLVED
It took awhile but they then sent me an email with info on how to retrieve my license code. You have to go to this web address, and enter your order number and password, or email address and last few digits of credit card info:

Well I dont seem to be able to upgrade full stop. When selecting upgrade I get "Our records indicate that you have no eligible registered products to upgrade. To complete your upgrade order, please register a compatible product." Strange as I own a copy of fusion 2.0 registered in Feb, if I go to account > manage serial numbers it appears there. I've been on hold for 20mins to sales to try and find out what is going on but no answer yet.
I am having this same issue. Although, when I look up my license it shows as version 1 still. I did upgrade from version 1. I want to upgrade to version 3.
Would be good if a VMware representative could post an update on when the upgrade purchase process will be fixed. I am about to give up and go back to Parallels 4.
I have the same problem. I have a valid serial number under "manage serial numbers", registered in October 2008. When I try to purchase the upgrade, I receive the same message, "Our records indicate that you have no eligible...". Would be nice if this upgrade system had been tested appropriate to the hype of the getting the upgrade.
Same here - no go on upgrade. "Our records indicate that you have no eligible..." But I do ...
I have just purchased and downloaded on-line VMware Fusion's upgrade 3.0, and installed it.
I am glad to inform that I had no problem whatsoever at any of the different phases.
VMware Tools installation, both in Windows XP Pro SP3, and Ubuntu 9.04-64bits was uneventful.
In Windows, the process was totally automatic.
In Linux, it was interactive as usual.
The result is a notable improvement in performance both for Windows and for Linux.
I liked the new tool bar, Macintosh style, with the three colored widgets, and the possibility to hide/show it.
Well done.

You should feel special! I've tried since about 7am (EDT) to upgrade and consistently get "Our records indicate that you have no eligible registered products to upgrade. To complete your upgrade order, please register a compatible product." If course, like other in this thread, I'm a registered user of 1.0/2.0.6 and my account setting attest to this. I also requested a demo license about 1 1/2 hours ago (I have e-mail from VMware acknowledging this), but have not received the E-mail demo key (that is supposed to arrive "within 5 minutes"). Not very impressed with upgrade support this AM - logged a request with support that this be looked into (hopefully fixed). Maybe this afternoon?
Just dropping my 2¢ into the mix -- as I too am unable to upgrade, even though I have a valid version listed in my account. Also tried to call sales and sat on hold for 30 minutes -- finally gave up.
What a steaming crock.....
Agree this is the worst upgrade ever. Tried registering my 1.x serial number, doesn't ever appear on my account. Tried specifying it while upgrading, but this apparently just searches your registered products. Tried downloading a demo, still have not received an email. Reading other posts, it sounds like even if you just pay the extra $40 and re-buy the entire product (which should NOT be necessary) you may or may not get a serial number, and it may or may not be the entire string...
Chalk this up as a terrible product launch.
Guess my only option is Amazon + Overnight shipping of a physical box to ensure I have a 3.x serial number. That's pretty sad.
I am also having problems purchasing the Fusion 3 upgrade. The website is giving me the same error saying I don't have a valid version and typing it in the box doesn't help. One interesting thing I noticed is on my boxed version of VMware Fusion 2.0 the CD sleeve with the serial number on it says VMware Fusion - Mac 2.0 Retail, but the VMware website account information says the serial number was a 1.X serial (VMware Fusion 1.0 (for Mac OS X)). I have never owned VMware Fusion 1.0 I purchased a 2.0 retail box from Amazon in August 2009, and registered it on August 19th, 2009. The upgrade website says Versions 2.X and 1.X can be upgraded to Fusion 3, so it shouldn't matter, but I thought the discrepancy might be important.
Can we get an official response from VMware on what is going on?
I'm having the same problem.
I keep registering my 2.0 License. I keep getting the wait 30 minutes... line. I wait 45 minutes.... NOTHING.
Still can't upgrade.
I certainly hope that when I actually do get to upgrade... That 3.0 works better then your website....
Otherwise I will be demanding a refund. Just because of the sheer annoyance!!!
This HAS to be the worst upgrade experience I've ever been thru.
"Team Fusion has been working long hours for almost a year to bring you VMware Fusion 3 and we hope you enjoy it!"
Should have put at least ONE of the people from the team, in charge of you upgrade process.
This thread is about 8 hours old. And yet NO ONE from VMWare has posted a message up to say if they are working on the problems we have ALL been seeing!!!!
I don't feel special at all, but maybe just lucky.
Maybe more than just lucky, after reading the problems you and other users have been, and maybe still are experiencing.
I purchased and downloaded the software at approximately 7:20 AM Eastern Standard Time.
When I clicked the purchase upgrade link, I was requested to log in my VMware account, which I did. Then I could perform the actual on-line purchase, and after a few seconds, not more, I received an e-mail from VMware confirming the order, with the new registration code, and a download link.
Tried the upgrade process again and this time I got the "request to login" page - got really excited - then got to the order page and it said I was qualified! BUT, the web page was corrupted - showed two of the upgrades and two of the serial number entry boxes - and below that an "error" display. A REAL mess. So, not quite there yet - but after 2 1/2 hours I DID get a demo serial number (activation code), so I guess i shouldn't complain...
I just got off the phone with sales. I'm having the same problem many other folks are having. I have VMWare Fusion 2.0 (sticker on the CD sleeve says Mac 2.0 Retail), purchased in Aug 09 from Amazon, but my SN shows up as a 1.x license. When I search for my SN, it says "Congratulations our records indicate you have products available for upgrade" at the top, but the bottom (way down) says "You have no registered eligible products to upgrade." The guy on the phone said they are being hammered with upgrade requests, to be patient, and to try again when the request volume dies down. Not a good answer. Other than waiting, there is no other way to get the upgrade.
That was after waiting on hold for 50 minutes...
VMWare dropped the ball on this upgrade...I have now downloaded a trial and use a trial key... even though i should be able to use my real key. VMWare should learn something from this event. And the key to it all is at least some communication informing people whats going on. The silence from their part is just as bad. They should at least acknowledge that they have screwed up
Same garbage here. My license shows in my account, shows date purchased, shows date registered. Go to upgrade and bingo, we cannot find any eligible product... I will be a little patient and try again, but I have sent an email and I have been on the phone for 1 hours with no response. I sure hope this is no indication of what V 3 will or will not do.... They definitely have problems. Worst case scenario, I can go to Academic Superstore and get it for the same price as the upgrade.... Oops, just got a person. Yes, the licensing server is being demolished by all the requests. Wait until tomorrow and try. I have 30 days on the trial so I will be patient...
Same here. Just bought version 2 and registered it in September and apparently that's not good enough for the upgrade price.
Looking at some of the other areas, there was mention of the Twitter feed.
I'll post here in case you didn't see it:
http://twitter.com/vmwarefusion
I totally agree with all of these posts, I bought it, installed it and can;t register it, no license no serial number, the website is at a turtles pace AHHHHHHHHHH I am so annoyed! I activated a support ticket. Geez, all I wanted to do is upgrade ! I never had problems with Fusion before, this is ridiculous! And to boot, no product information is showing up in my account, how ignorant of these IT people, What is going on??????
What gives VMware
You invited me to participate in a Fusion Beta program, which I did and provided feedback. Now for my involvement, you are now charging me $39.00, and you do not even provide a way to downgrade to the previous version. SHAME ON YOU! Be careful on your way up, because you just might meet me on your way down...
Jeff,
We sent out 25% off discount codes to all beta testers to the e-mail account we sent your invite. If you didn't get it, please send an e-mail to beta-thanks at vmware.com and they will send one to you.
If you don't want to upgrade, you can downgrade as follows:
1) In your virtual machine, uninstall VMware Tools and then shut down your virtual machines
2) Uninstall the VMware Fusion 3 beta or final software
3) Install VMware Fusion 2.0.6
4) Power on your virtual machine and install VMware Tools and restart
You have then downgraded to VMware Fusion 2.0.6 from VMware Fusion 3.
Hope that helps.
Pat
I am giving up on trying to update via VMWare web page as it continued to have problem to pay via PayPal. I even tried to pay with credit card and yet I still could not complete the payment transaction. I am about to switch to Parallel latest release version as there VMWare do not seem to resolve the payment method for those who wanted to upgrade. Why pay the full price each time when we already have the previous version! In fact MicroSmith offered the same full version for only $59.99 not $79.99, Totally disappointed!
I have been trying to upgrade to Fusion 3 on almost a daily basis since Oct. 27th without success. Yesterday I waited over 2 hours for UK sales, until the battery on my handsfree ran out. This is a complete shambles from VMWare.
I have been a Fusion customer since version 1.0, having bought the boxed product. The upgrade to 2.0 was free (thanks!) and painless, although still some niggling issues about CPU usage on idle on a MBP C2Duo 2.4Ghzw/4GB RAM.
I have experienced the no eligible products available error, right down to the can't log in during the check-out page, even though the login works elsewhere on the site to view the registered serial numbers (which are indeed registered).
I'm giving up on Fusion. VMWare's customer service appear to be slipping of late, and this upgrade experience has been the worst ever in my almost 20 years of professional software development. You'd have thought they would at least sell it to you first, rake in the money, and THEN make you suffer for support - lol.
Good thing Parallels released 5.0 today. I've just installed it and it looks very promising, plus they have a "competitive upgrade" price for Fusion 2 owners, which sweetens the deal a lot.
Excellent marketing from Parallels, a seemingly good product (in light of all the well-documented Fusion 3 woes). I suspect a lot of Fusion users in the same boat as me will be taking this approach... Someone's head should be made to roll at VMWare for this utter disgrace!
Since I had upgraded from version 2 to version 3 (downloaded version), I could not connect to internet anymore even following your connection tips. Also the Norton Internet security stop working. Is there any fix for it?, if not how can I downgrade o my 2.0 version that I bought on CD?
I have a Macbook 13 silver pentium core 2 duo 2.4 , 250gb hd, 4gb RAM. MAC OS 10.5.8. The windows on boot camp is a Windows XP home.
I purchased the 3.0 upgrade even after having just purchased a retail copy of 2.0 in the apple store no response from vm on why i had to pay again but to make matters worse the upgrade runs terrible on my machine i have a 2.93 imac with 4 gig ram it should fly but no whenever i open a new window it shakes and studders I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND UPDATING UNTIL THEY FIX THIS PROBLEM I WANT MY MONEY BACK AND I WILL REVERT TO 2.0 WHICH WORKED GREAT
When the upgrade was released I purchased it, downloaded and installed it. It's running fine, especially with Windows XP Pro SP3. With Ubuntu 9.10, not so great ( I have to log in twice each time), but still running. I guess I was lucky.

I'm not one to normally rant on a website and I'm sure not here to flame. Please take the following constructively and rework a few of your processes. Or at least help us understand why we have to jump through hoops.
RANT BEGINS: The VMWare Fusion product is fantastic, but the upgrade was the worst experience ever. First, the system wouldn't let me upgrade for $39.99 price. I was getting conflicting messages. First it said Congratulations you can upgrade, select the SN/License to upgrade, but it wouldn't allow me to select my registered information. I received an error message that was overlapping and pushed down a screen and a half. I finally decided to pay the full price of $79.99 just so I could get it done. Of course I get a confirmation email that tells me I have to register the product. I just bought it from VMWare and now I have to go back and tell VMWare that I bought it. That is just plain stupid! Then in the email there is an Activation Code. OK, fine. In the software its asks for a Serial Number, not an Activation code. Why can't they get the terms right? I mean if I need to enter an Activation Code in the Serial Number field then say so. Overall I'm very disappointed with this whole process even though I love the product. RANT ENDS.
Another question. When I choose to download the product I had to click about 8 times before I actually got the file downloaded. The download should start right after I click the license agreement page.
I really do love the product and will continue to purchase upgrade as long as I own a Mac. VMWare's Fusion is the best application a Mac Owner can get if they need to run Windows.
