Supermicro and Adaptec Controller

Hello
I bought following components:
Supermicro 6026T-NTR+, Adaptec 3405 and 3805.
Configuration, on 3405 I installed RAID 1 and ESX System and on 3805 it's "RAID 10" for VM's
I installed vsphere4 and the first time is boot correct and after I poweroff for 2days I get following error:

"vsd-mount failed" and the process stop.

There are all 3 components vSphere4 compatible?

ESXi on Proliant DL380
Hi --

I'm new to ESXi and I am trying to install ESXi 3.5.0 U4 on a HP (compaq) Proliant DL380. I did not see this server in the HCL but I did find doing other Google searches that other people have installed ESXi on this type of server before. I know the boot disk is good because it works in my desktop computer (IBM S51).

I have checked that the CD drive is the second option in the boot order followed by the c:\ drive. A:\ drive is the first. When I put the ESXi ISO disk in the server and try to boot from it, I can't see anything on the screen after POST. I can't tell if it's trying to boot or not because I have no video. If I remove the disk, the server boots into Windows with no problem.

Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening? Thanks!

Install ESX 3.5i xSeries (eServer) 100?
Has anyone experience with installing ESX 3.5i U4 on a IBM xSeries 100 server. That is an entry level server with a P4 3.2Ghz processor, 800FSB, an internal SATA controller (SATA, not SATA II). No RAID controller. I would like to use this machine to host some network services (LDAP, RADIUS, etc) and a few small websites. I would be gratefull for any experience someone might have with this machine. I am working for a non profit with a small budget, and buying a new server is not directly an option.

thnx.
Hi Group,

with esx3.5i I could use a adaptec 29160. But with the update I can no longer use this adapter. Which adapters can I use instead or easy how dow I have to look in the HCL?
virtualisation of websphere6.1
Hi there,

We have four linux guests created in a single Essex host server with 4 cpus and 16gb ram . All the four linux guests are sharing a single virtual NIC. OS is RHEL5. Application generated the blank pages and half pages sporadically. It doesnt genearte any exceptions or errors in the log files which is kind of frustrating to troubleshoot. we directly ran the application against the app server on a http transport bypassing the webservers and load balancer. We ran a tcpdump on the server to find out what is causing and found out the reposnse that server is sending got truncated. Since this is sporadic i kind of hit the wall and not sure where to look for. Any parameters at the OS level or ESSEX level needs to be tuned. Please let me know.

Thanks,
Anyone tried a Silicom PXG4U for ESX 3.5/4?

It's based on the Broadcom bcm5704 which is on the HCL, but I'm not sure if ESX will see all 4 ports for this particular quad Silicom card.

Some people report that certain bcm5704 based quad gigabit cards get detected as one port in ESX. Hard to tell which is which since they don't specify the brand.

MSA1500cs MSA1x00 LUNs on VMware - Excessive SCSI Bus Reservations
HP has finally released a document on the MSA1500cs lockup problems copied below.

Has anyone followed these steps to see that this works where the controller no longer locks up????

HP StorageWorks MSA1x00 LUNs on VMware - Excessive SCSI Bus Reservations

Issue

The HP StorageWorks MSA1000 or MSA1500cs may lockup every three to four weeks. Customers are required to power-cycle the whole environment to get access to the storage again.

Timeouts and excessive SCSI reservation conflicts are logged in the /var/log/vmkwarning file:

WARNING: Migrate: 1346: 1229224338134649: Migration considered a failure by the VMX. It is most likely a timeout, but check the VMX log for the true error.

WARNING: Migrate: 1243: 1229224338134649: Failed: Migration determined a failure by the VMX (0xbad0091) @0xa148e5

WARNING: SCSI: 119: Failing I/O due to too many reservation conflicts

Memory allocation errors are logged on the MSA CLI debug serial console:
<strike>44d 06:38:23.9</strike> Error allocating persistent memory data set handle-table full <strike>44d 06:38:23.9</strike> parse/pr_aptpl.c: Failed to persist reservation type 10 for ITL 15:0:1 (PDLA). APTPL = 0
<strike>44d 06:38:24.0</strike> (Err=0, IDH=0x0, TPDH=0x0, IH=0xD, TPH=0xFC00)

Solution

NOTE: Before you start resolving the issue, make a full verified backup of all MSA data.

1. Update MSA1000 or MSA1500cs controllers firmware to v5.30 active/passive or v7.10 active/active either using the corresponding MSAFlash utilities or alternatively from the CLI using the corresponding binary file.

2. Make sure that all FC connections profile name coming from VMware hosts are set to Linux rather than left as default . Make sure that they are given a name. In order to achieve this, boot one of the servers by MSA Support Software CD v7.76. To download MSA Support Software CD v7.76, go to the MSA1500 Support Software CD (ISO) webpage. Click here to visit the MSA1500 Support Software CD (ISO) webpage (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=415598&prodNameId=415600&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=co-47048-1) .

Run the Array Configuration Utility , and choose Selective Storage Presentation to set the host connection profile appropriately to the correct operating system name.

3. Disable the HP SIM Fibre Agent:

a. Log in to the ESX Server host service console.

b. Open the file /opt/compaq/cma.conf in a text editor.

c. Add exclude cmahostd to the top of the file.

d. Save the file, and exit the editor.

e. Restart the management agents on the host by running the following three commands:

service hpasm restart

service hpsmh restart

service cmanic restart

4. Double-check the multipath policy in use and make sure it is set to mru as the storage is running active/passive firmware v5.30. You can use the vmkmultipath command, or the VMware Management User Interface (MUI) to set the multipathing policy for a LUN. For example, the following command sets the multipathing policy on the fly for all LUNs on the SAN vmhba0:0:1 to MRU:

vmkmultipath -s vmhba0:0:1 -p mru

5. Make sure that the customer serializes any backups they might be doing (as opposed to running simultaneous or parallel backup jobs).

6. VMware ESX has an advanced setting that will use a LUN reset instead of a bus reset. The parameter UseDeviceReset should be set to 0 and the UseLunReset should be set to 1 . Using these settings will change the bus reset to only affect a single LUN (the one that the reset was issued against) instead of affecting all LUNs. This setting should greatly reduce the number of check conditions generated by bus resets, which will give the controller a lot less items to handle.

The setting is also documented in the SAN Configuration Guide from VMware (in the appendix on page 118). Click here to view "SAN Configuration Guide" (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_301_201_san_cfg.pdf) .

The default settings will be listed in the logs as:

UseDeviceReset (Use device reset (instead of bus reset) to reset a SCSI device) 0-1: default = 1: 1
UseLunReset (Use LUN reset (instead of device/bus reset) to reset a SCSI device) 0-1: default = 1: 1

The setting can be changed either through the VirtualCenter server or it can be changed from the command line on the ESX service console.

Page 78 of the Version 2.5 VMware ESX Server SAN Configuration Guide has the procedure on how to change the parameter using VirtualCenter. Click here to go to "Version 2.5 VMware ESX Server SAN Configuration Guide" (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx25_san_cfg.pdf) .

To set the value from the command line, it is:

[]$ esxcfg-advcfg -g /Disk/UseDeviceReset <== to GET the current value
Value of UseDeviceReset is 1 <== Current value
[]$ esxcfg-advcfg -s 0 /Disk/UseDeviceReset <== To SET value to 0
Value of UseDeviceReset is 0 <== New value

Either way you choose to change the parameter, you need to restart the vmware-hostd daemon to activate the changes by typing the service console command:

service mgmt-vmware restart

Alternatively, just reboot the ESX server.

Once the settings have been modified, they will appear in the logs as:

UseDeviceReset (Use device reset (instead of bus reset) to reset a SCSI device) 0-1: default = 1: 0
UseLunReset (Use LUN reset (instead of device/bus reset) to reset a SCSI device) 0-1: default = 1: 1

7. In VMware be sure to properly set the SCSI controller sharing mode based on the system configuration because these will also reduce SCSI Bus reservation conflicts.

Here is the configuration guideline as listed in the HP VMware Best Practices document:

Sharing LUNs in order to share LUNs between VMs within a single ESX server, set the SCSI controller to Virtual mode. To share LUNs across multiple ESX servers or in a virtual to physical configuration, set the SCSI controller to Physical mode.
Hi,

I'm building a server to use with vmware esx and I'v done a bit of searching and couldn't find any answers for whether this motherboard would be supported or not. This is my first time I would be using ESX/ESXi, so I'm not sure which version I would/should use, if theres one particularly that would support the hardware better, or if no version supports these, please let me know so I can re-configure before ordering.

Heres what I'm getting:

SUPERMICRO MBD-X8DAL-i-O Dual LGA 1366 Intel 5500 ATX Dual Quad-Core

(2) Intel Xeon E5520 Nehalem 2.26GHz LGA 1366 Quad-Core

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117185

Thanks.

Array Configurations Options
Configuring a new ESXi 4.0...

For now I have it booting from a 1gb USB thumb Drive (installed to that anyway)

DL185 G5 Server with 12 1.5tb drives

Raid Array is set at 14.5 TB Capacity (~13.5+ Usable) No partitions set.

Next I'm looking at the HyperVisor Layer to look something like this... however this is where I think I'm going to hit some issues... but not sure..

500gb (OS / VM Storagage)

1.5TB Spare Partition

11+ TB Partition (dedicate directly to a VM (Openfiler)

Here is the quick map I created for it...

Otherwise I'm stuck loading Openfiler then vmware ontop of that...which works but would rather the opposite...

So if this is the case should I pre-partition the storage area before esx install?

HP NC373T NIC
Hi all,

I got a Dell Optiplex 760 that I'm trying to install ESXi on to take out to a site to demo. I know that it is not particularly supported, but it installed fine except detecting the NIC. I bought a HP NC373T Nic because it was in the HCL and I've used them before. I installed in in the PCI-e 16 slot and reloaded ESXi but it does not see the new NIC either. I have disabled the on-board NIC before installing. Does anyone have any advice to get this NIC seen?

The release I've used are 3.5.0 that a co-worker made from a release on 4/30/09. It is the one that doesn't see the new NIC. I've downloaded the latest release (6/22/09) but that errors on install with "*Failed to load lvmdriver" .

Is it possible to get the HP NIC working since it is in the HCL?

Thanks.

Does VMware-ESX-Certification-Appliance-2.1.0.0-164751 support DCMI and sensor-specific event sensor?
We encount 2 issues when do VMWare ESX certification on one server hardware system.

Would you please help to answer the questions or recommend the proper window for
questions at below?
1. Does VMware ESX4.0 or its certification tool
(VMware-ESX-Certification-Appliance-2.1.0.0-164751) support DCMI Spec?
2. Does OMC support the IPMI sensor whose event type is "sensor specific" ?

Issues:
1. VMware Certification Temperature Sensor Mismatch
OMC = 22,?SFCB = 7.
2. VMware Certification Power Supply Count Mismatch
OMC (Open Management with CIM) =1,SFCB (Small Footprint CIM Broker) =3

Environment:
Server:VMware ESX 4.0
Certification appliance: VMware-ESX-Certification-Appliance-2.1.0.0-164751

Problems on Fedora 11 (2.6.29 kernel) as a host
Hi,

Here's the list I've found so far:

On random occasions, moving from the a guest to the host causes
SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT keys to stop working in the host. They continue to
work fine in the guest. Only solution is to logout of X and login again.

Suspending a VM causes Workstation to hang after the suspend is
complete. Only way to release it is to kill the vmware-vmx process.
While it is hung, it is using CPU.

Logging off an X session (tested with Gnome) causes the guest
machines to be effectively powered-off forthwith. No suspension, no
backgrounding. This is despite the fact that "Run powered on VMs in
background after close" is enabled in Workstation.

no sound device is available into the guests.

Using Workstation 6.5.2 build-156735

In addition, which might be related to Fedora 11, hgfs mangles some file names (e.g. files that have a % sign in them):

I've reported this as a bug here:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=509463

The bug was rejected by RedHat as being a vendor problem.

The guest was Fedora 7.

regards,

Performance with NAS GB Lan

Hi

I am busy setting up VMware ESXi for a client. He has an small to medium business.
With +/- 15 Servers and 50 users.
The ESXi Server is an Intel Xeon 2.5Ghz Quad Core Server.
I was thinking to use the Intel Omega SS4200E NAS Storage System.
It has 1 GB Lan and RAID 5 with 4 1TB Hdd.
And would use GB Lan.

How would the Performance be over the LAN with the NAS?
Would it be possible to run all 15 VM from the NAS over the GB Lan?

Thanks
Dell Inspiron 545MT
We're considering several systems to use for testing of various Linux and Opensolaris configurations, (i.e. crash and burn testing as opposed to production systems). Now these would only be used by a single admin each hence do not need to be too high a spec as there will be no "user" load but they may need to run multilpe VMs at once.

We were considering the Dell Inspiron 545MT desktop mid-tower models with Core 2 Quad Q8200, 4GB of ram and 640GB of SATA storage as they are pretty cheap and should be quiet enough to run in an open plan office environment.

Do people think that this would be suitable and will these systems run ESXi 4.0 ok, (in particular disk and built in NIC support) ?

We have IBM x3655-7985 installed ESX on it. But recently we
got situation that (Voltage Regulator 1 power good failure). We are monitoring
IBM servers using IBM Director Console. But we didnt receive any alerts before
the server went down on IBM director console. My question is here ESX 3.0.1
Will support IBM Director Console for monitoring the hardware failure of the
server? Also we have Remote Supervisor Adapter installed on it.

Hi all,

Any recommendations on motherboard, SATA controller, NIC, RAM etc. on a Intel i7 family processor (specifically the i7 920) for ESX 4.0? Is the i7 920 suitable anyway? Would ESX 3.5 also run on it?

Thanks in advance,
Its not listed on the i/o compatibility HCL but I was wondering if anyone had any practical experience of it working or not, or any news of official inclusion in the i/o HCL?
ESXi does not recognize a virtual machine from a RAID 1 backup drive

Hello all,

We have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 III server on which we run ESXi. We have four pairs of RAID 1 drives (8 drives total). Each pair is set as its own Data Store in ESXi. Each separate pair of drives holds its own Virtual Machine.

All of these drives are hot-swappable, so we pull a drive from each pair, which we store as a backup, and then insert a new drive to rebuild. This way, if disaster strikes and both drives in a set fail, we can shut the server down, pull the failed pair, insert our backup copy, reboot the server, and be back where we were before the drives failed.

The problem we are having is that when we reboot the server, ESXi no longer recognizes the virtual machine on that drive. If we go to the console, the screen is black. In the VMware Infrastructure, the tree shows the message "Unknown (inaccessible)" where the virtual machine used to be. I suspect it has something to do with the way Dell handles foreign drives. You have to go into the Bios and "Import Foreign", which allows the drive to be used. Does anyone know how ESXi recognizes the virtual machines? The virtual machine still exists on the drive, but ESXi doesn't recognize it. Does it just read a header file on the drive, and if it does not match what is in its configuration, lists it as unknown and inaccessible?

Thanks for any help or information!

GlusterFS with VMWare

Greetings Everyone,

I work with the GlusterFS (http://www.gluster.org) team and we are currently trying to understand more about
GlusterFS deployments with VMWare. We are looking at feedback from users of the same.

We are interested in knowing the following:

1) How many servers (Real and Virtual) do you use in the deployment?
2) What versions of operating systems/distributions do you use?
3) What is the VMware version that you use?
4) What disk based file systems do you use?
5) What is the amount of storage in the deployment?
6) What is the network interconnect that you use? (TCP/IP, Infiniband)

Any information that you can provide us on the above would be much
appreciated.
Also, if you could share a topology of your deployment with us, it would
be great!

Please write to Vijay <vijay at gluster.com> with any information that
you can share with us.

We promise that any information that you share with us would be kept
strictly confidential.

Thanks in Advance,
Web Service Issue!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi all,

I am a software engineer. Previously I was working on C++, few months ago i started to work on Java Project.

Let me define the issue which i am currently facing,

I have tthree web services say ABC, PQR and XYZ.

ABC is implemented in Java whereas XYZ and PQR are implemented in C++. Both web services are SOAP/XML compliant.

The XYZ and PQR web services were developed with help of gSoap 2.7 package.

The interaction between ABC and XYZ webservice required security. So they are using SSL encryption for communication. The ABC and PQR are interacting with each other on normal HTTP:// protocol.

Now in SSL context XYZ (C++ WS) is a server and issued a client certificate to ABC (Java web service).

So while requesting ABC must send SSL certificate in the request as per my understading. But i don't know the exact way to send/attach/upload client SSL certificate within the Request.

Is there any standard method available for this???

How should I proceed with the resolution of above metioned problem???

I've got esxi 3.5 working on 3 PowerEdge sc1435's along with Qlogic qla200 hba's connected to my san. Everything appeared to be rock solid for quite some time. Now I'll have random SAN disconnects that don't seem to follow a pattern. Is anyone else successfully using the qla200 hba?

128MB or 256MB Adpatec 3805 RAID Controller?
Hi All,

I'm currently upgrading the hardware internals of my home server so that I can run ESXi. I plan to have quite a few virtual environments on this server (maybe two or three dozen), however I can't see myself ever wanting more than a dozen running at any one time. This is the hardware I am currently looking at;

Intel Core i7 920 CPU

MSI X58 Platinum

2 x 6GB DDR3 1333 Kingston kits

3 x Western Digital AV Green Power 1TB HDD's (may upgrade to the 1.5TB disks though)

For the I/O controller I am looking at getting the Adaptec 3805 SAS/SATA RAID controller. This model comes in a 128MB version as well as a 256MB version (not upgradable unfortunately), and was just wondering if this increase in RAM is likely to result in any tangible performance gains for ESXi and the guest operating systems? If the performance between the two versions is notable I am happy enough to spend the extra, however as there appears to be a fair price difference between the two where I am I really only want to spend this money if it is going to really make a difference.

Appreciate any advice you can give!

ESXi rack server SATA on the cheap? 2U-3U

I am looking to change out my current server with one that I can actually rack mount (have a rack, no rackmounted server) and came across a Dell PowerEdge 2650 for fairly cheap ($90 if I pick it up) without any drives. I thought I could just put in a SATA card and put in some SATA drives (to save money) but after doing some research it seems this is not possible. I guess because of the power supply and no adapters or room for expansion. I then started searching for other options, found a HP Proliant that was somewhat cheap but again, SCSI only. I then started searching for rack servers that did have the SATA connections and was only able to find 1U options, with most being fairly expensive. So is there anything out there that will work with ESXi and have the expansion of multiple drives for under, say $200ish used? Would it be cheaper to just get a small NAS/SAN and the original PowerEdge 2650? Maybe there is actually some way to put in SATA drives into the PowerEdge or another similar model?

Thanks for any help/insight
So, I have a older Gigabyte 965P-DS3 motherboard that has 4 ICH8 SATA ports. All four of the ports are recognized by ESX 3.5 U4, but only the first two ports ESX will recognize drives attached to. Any thoughts as to why this is? The bios will see the drives attached to the 3rd and 4th ports, but ESX wont. I am able to install and run ESX on the drives on the first two ports.

thanks
Stand alone Sata Raid Options?

After spending a week trying to get clear answers about ANY standalone Sata Raid options feel like I need to come here... I have learned that there is no supported standalone PCIe Raid card for ESXi. I also learned that there is no plans to add support 3ware cards in ESXi... So as I was planning on using ESXi + the 3ware raid cards I am at a loss as how to move forward.

I am willing to upgrade to ESX but, I need full support for whichever solution I pick. The current 3ware support in ESX does NOT support monitoring of the Raid array status so even that is really out of the question. Are there any options for a single box solution? My I/O load isn't going to be that high but I need protection from drive failure. The server is going to be located about 30 miles away so having the ability to monitor the array status is a requirment.

Does VMware ESX support ANY hardware that meets my requirements? If ESX/ESXi doesn't support any standalone Raid hardware are there any other options? Keep in mind that NAS/SAN would be way overkill in this application.

SuperMicro X7DBN motherboard, SATA RAID?
I guess I went on faith a little too much; I bought this motherboard according to this post:

http://communities.vmware.com/message/1133119#1133119

But didn't get any kind of SATA controller; I tried to load up ESXi and it of course comes back and says "no compatible storage available" I foolishly went through and assumed the onboard controller would be enough.

I've looked through the HCL and I'm not quite sure what to get as for a controller - I'm trying to stick under $200 if possible - but not even sure where to look? I've got 16gb of RAM, two 500gb WD SATA drives, and two Xeon quad-core E5405 processors.

I also noticed that the motherboard has a secondary (white) IDE slot that says "for compact flash only" on it - Newegg has a CF adapter that goes straight to IDE for $7 or so, and a 2gb CF is only about $10 or so - would there be any reason for me to load (or not to load) ESXi onto a CF card? Any advantages?

I definitely appreciate any help anyone can provide, I'm in virgin (gasp) territory this time. I've done VM Workstation plenty, but trying to learn/teach myself ESXi.

vmware lsi scsi drivers

I'm trying to find the correct drivers for vmware's lsilogic scsi disk.

The long story is I'm trying to convert a physical nt 4.0 box to a virtual machine. We couldn't run Converter as it couldn't detect which OS was running; nt 4 sp6a. So I performed a backup and restore using dd with a linux live cd. After performing the restore, we see the OS selection screen. After picking the OS the blue screen appear and changes quickly to BSOD; inaccessible_boot_device. I tried playing with the boot.ini but got couldn't find ntosknrl.exe instead. Right now I'm thinking that the installed disk drivers are not compatible with vmware.

NT 4 doesn't have recovery console, but i read that the RC from a 2000 disk will work. I boot to a 2000 cd but keep getting Setup could not find any hard disk drives. I tried loading lsi 20320 driver for 2000 but keep getting the same error. I'm picking the U320 fromt he list
Asus P5MT with ESXi
Has anyone tried the EXSi 3.5 Installable on the Asus Server motherboard P5MT or variants?

I have done a search of the forums and I checked the white boxes website and found nothing. However, at the same time I found a post saying that even though it's un-tested/reported it doesn't mean that it won't work. Therefore, I am asking the question just incase anyone has done the testing already.

Problem installing on Foxconn G45M
Hey there..

I tried to install ESXi 3.5U3 ( VMware-VMvisor-InstallerCD-3.5.0_Update_3-123629.i386.iso ) on my FOXCONN G45M motherboard (with a SATA HDD / 4GB RAM) but the installation always fails The installer correctly indentifies my motherboard.

When loading all the modules after/during "loadingusb-storage" the screen wents to the screen saying:

Welcome to VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 Installation

......

(ESC) Cancel (R) Repair (ENTER) Install

but then the system freezes. Can't change console or anything else.....

Any idea what I am missing here to get esxi running on my hardware?

thx in advance
I have an ESX with 4 Nics in it, a dual port e100 nic and 2 BMC5701 GIGE nics.

3 of 4 show up in VC, I am missing the 2 BMC 5701 Nic.

AN lspci shows both of BMC 5701 Nics.

a vmkload_mod -1 shows the module tg3 loaded.

a esxcfg-nics -1 does not show the 2nd bmc nic.

How do I get this nic into a esxcfg-nic display to be able to see this nic in VC and use it.
the FibreCAT SX60 is a small Storage System and support up to 12x 1GB SATAII-Disks with 7200k and FC-Connection.

Are the any performance issues using this system in a VMware enviroment for Test and Dev.?

How high are the performance benefits when using 15k SAS HDD instead?

Hi,

Is there anyone that knows a very low budget raid sata controller card compatible with vmware esx 3i? My motherboard (Tyan Thunder) and all the other hardware is on the compatible list. I want to create a sata raid using a sata raid controller card that support vmware esx i. Anyone can help? Also it's 100% mandatory use the HCL for the esx 3i? I used some Adaptec that were not included on the HCL and indeed they did not worked.

SCSI option for me is too expensive.

The ethernet controllers on the Tyan are Marvell 88E1121's I didn't find them on the HCL, but that doesn't mean someone else hasn't been successful in getting them to work. I am not tied specifically to this motherboard, but I would like to stick with Tyan.
MSA1000 fiber controllers crash after ugrading to ESX3.5.0 U3

We are using a SAN HP MSA1000 and 4 blades HP BL20P G4.
There are several VMs running on them that are used in production. I don't want to loose all the stuff because it should take a lot of time to restore.

Since I've upgraded the ESX servers from 3.0.2 to 3.5.0 U3, the fiber controllers of the SAN crash each time it works with large amounts of data.

According to HP, the current firmware version (4.48) of the controllers is not compatible with ESX 3.5.0 because they work in ACTIVE/PASSIVE mode.

The solution would be to upgrade the controllers to firmware version 7.10 which works in ACTIVE/ACTIVE mode.

Our HW support provider is afraid that the ESX servers would not react correctly when the access to the storage box (MSA1000) is changed from ACTIVE/PASSIVE to ACTIVE/ACTIVE.

Could you confirm that the firmware upgrade is the good solution.

Regards,

When i look at the compatibility guide, there ist only "supported with Brocade 4G and 8G HBAs.".

( http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&deviceCategory=san&productId=1&keyBasic=ax4-5&maxDisplayRows=50&key=&release][=-1&datePosted=-1 )
Compatability with Dell laptops and Desktops
Normally I have plenty of Dell desktops to use as sandbox servers.

I want to use ESXi for proof of concept to demonstrate value of ESX, but there is no true servers available. I have converted my previous employer to ESX in most of the environment. I am looking to create an ESXi environment in my office and on my laptop.

Also, I wish to run ESXi on my Dell laptop, but before disabling it to install ESX. I was wondering is ESXi compatable with PIV Dell laptops

Lastly, as I am putting a larger hard drive in the laptop for ESX. Is there a tool that will allow me to migrate the XP environment including applications back to ESX from a static installation on hard drive.

My goal is to retain the current version of XP on the new larger disk, install a fresh install of XP, and install an instance of RHEL5 for demonstrative purposes. Yet still have access to the legacy applications I have on the laptop currently.

thanks in advance.

Serial Port Issues
Using ESX 3.5.0

I have 3 working Serial port modems(different brands and models even), they all 3 work on multiple physical machines. Anytime i hook up any of the 3 modems up to a virtual machine, they can send the fax okay, but the output is all jumbled up on the first 2 inches of the page.

I have tried converting over multiple machines. Creating Server 2k3, server 2k, xp VM's. Tried a combination of the 3 modems with the 3 OS's.

All of this testing has resulted in the same jumbled up output, and it does it on my small workstation unit(turned ESX Dev Server) and my Dell Poweredge Production Unit as well. The only thing left to be at fault since the problems happen when replacing the modems, OS's, and physical servers. It only leaves ESX.

The COM and Modem settings on the physical machine and the VM's are the same, so what is it that the VM's cannot send the faxes correctly...

Has anyone had similar issues? or a solution? thanks!

ESX 3.5 U3 and UNISYS ES7600R
Hi all,

in the VMWARE HCL I can see that this server mounts Quad-core Intel Xeon X7350, but on the Unisys site the machine is reported as X7440.

Also this machine can mount an Intel Exa-core X7460.

Anyone knows this server or use it with ESX 3.5 U3 ?

Thanks
ScaleOut StateServer
The publisher of this software strongly suggests not running this application in a VM. http://www.scaleoutsoftware.com

Does anyone have experience optimizing this application for operation in a VM? It seems that it would be ideally suited. It's not a particularly compute intensive application. There is some network traffic to keep each of the ScaleOut instances in sync but this should not be onerous. Yet, they recommend minimum 1 gigabit network between the nodes.

When I first signed up to download vmware server, I didn't know if I would be spending much time with it. At this point, I am trying to test using two servers, moving servers around, etc. As I recall, I think I said one server, a few guests for the license. Do I just use the same license for the second server or should I update my license and if update, where?

Looking for low cost server for SW development running ESXi 3.5
The HCL lists server systems, but I can't find a components list (I can see why that would be difficult to support). I'm considering a system based on MSI G45M-FIDR motherboard using an Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.20 GHz E2200 processor, SATA-II interface with 2x250GB drives, on board LAN and video. I'll up it to 4GB memory. I've attached a description in a Word doc.

I'm looking for a system to test against while doing VI SDK development work, so it doesn't need to support a live production environment.

This is a pretty vanilla system I expect will run ESXi, but I checking around before purchasing. Is there anything in this system that raises a red flag?

Thanks in advance, and I'll post specs on whatever I end up using.

I can't view LUNs in HP EVA3000
Hello,

I have installed vmware esx 3.5 U2 in a HP DL 585. This server has a atached 1 hba dual port emulex LP11002 connected to SAN HP EVA3000 VCS3028.

I added a host in the Command View EVA as says VMware Infrastructure 3, HP StorageWorks best practices.

*In Command View EVA, set the host OS name parameter to Custom.
*For an active/passive EVA3000/5000 array, use host mode type 000000002200282E.

And I added the hba ports to this host:

And virtual disks.

When I rescan the hbas in the ESX hosts I can´t see any LUN. If I restart de ESX host the result is the same:

I have made this one two days ago. Today morning when I rescan the hbas again I was be able to see the LUN, but when I restarted tke ESX host I lost the LUN again.

Any idea!!.

Thanks
