Upload a Profile Image + Avatar, and Win!

Hello Lounge Lizards (and I use the term endearingly),

Upload a profile image and avatar into your VMware Communities profile, and you could win a $50 iTunes gift card!
It's that simple! VMware Communities has enabled both profile images and avatars, so now we want you to let other community members know what you look like! Or at least let us know what you wish you looked like.

Avatars are the small graphics that display next to all of your posts. Profile images are the large images that display on your profile page. For some good examples, let me introduce to you some people on the VMware Communities team:

RDellimmagine (that's me)

JohnTroyer

ericni

Badsah

How do I upload?
Go to VMware Communities, log in, then click your name at the upper right of the page.

- Avatar: Click "Change avatar" in the "Actions" box at the right.

- Profile Image: Click "Edit Communities profile" in the "Actions" box at the right.

How to Win!

Make sure you have both an avatar and a profile image uploaded into your VMware Communities profile before midnight Pacific on Wednesday, October 28. If you already have an avatar, that's great -- you don't need to upload a new one.

I will pick one VMware Communities member at random who has both an avatar and a profile image uploaded by the deadline, and I'll send that person a $50 iTunes gift card. Then I'll announce the winner here.

There's no need to tell me you've uploaded an image and avatar -- I will find them in your profile. VMware employees are not eligible to win the prize. No purchase necessary to win.

Have fun getting connected! - Robert
Hi, after VMware has been fully implemented into production at our office, I expect that I'll be required to provide some sort of presentation to our users about it. Does anyone know of an existing Powerpoint presentation or video download that gives a very basic presentation of what VMware and virtualization in general is?

Thanks
Job offer - reduce headcount with VMware

So I got a job offer with a company I've always wanted to
work for. It's real close to home and with an industry that I'd love to be a
part of. But, I've been told that the goal of virtualization is to reduce
staff. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with this (taking away jobs) and if
virtualization is going to really make that much of an impact on how many
employees the company has. I mean, even if I virtualize exchange, sql servers
and other business critical servers, those people who manage those systems
still have to be there to work on the servers. The servers do not just "go
away" thereby reducing staff. I can see the low hanging fruit here, that
if we virtualize, you will not have to pay to renew support or replace hardware
on a bunch of systems. That might eliminate people in that department. Yes,
consolidation means less cost to the business, but not necessarily a mass
reduction in staff. I kinda feel like I might be the "virtual" grim reaper
coming in the door.

Cloud Computing holds enormous potential for enterprises trying to optimize infrastructure resources, improve the reliability of services, and reduce costs. Because virtualization technology and cloud computing is changing the way IT resources are utilized, organizations can now take advantage of distributed architecture and extend applications and IT infrastructure into the cloud while maintaining the levels of security, control, service, and compliance needed for next generation data centers.

I am quite determined to ride this virtualization wave out and reap the benefits. Unfortunately, I don't know the best way to move forward with this as I've always been a salaried employee. Are there any individuals or start-ups out there looking to focus on VMWare-specific ventures, and potentially growing from there? DoD...in particular?
Can VCP's get a discounted VMWorld Subscription?
Hi all.

I know that us VCP's get a discount on the real VMWorld (and Europe) but do we also get a discount for the virtual VMWorld subscription?

I hope so, because my credit card can't handle $699 straight after Christmas!

Cheers.
When ACE is no option ... Kiosk-mode

Sometimes you want to run a single VM in a locked down environment.
If you want a portable solution you may consider something like Pocket-ACE.
When you are not allowed to install anything on the system you can't use that.

For this kind of scenarions you may want to consider running KIOSK-mode MOA.
Kiosk-mode means you get a small Livesystem that can either boot from CD or USB and which then starts a VM on a USB-disk or flash-drive/stick.
The Livesystem itself is completely hidden - the user can not interact with it at all - all he ever sees is the running VM.
In the demo the VM is launched through VMplayer - if you want you can also run it through an ACE-player.

If you need a special hardened configuration like this feel free to ask.
Recommended boot-device: something like this!

You need emcypted VMs ? - no problem

How to start a vmuser group?
Hi everyone,

I was wondering how I go about creating a vmware user group?
I had look under the listings on the forum and could not really see how to go about it.
There are two in this country already but not really nearby.
Does VMware help out in any way when you set somethin up?

cheers
brainstorm: poor mans scheduled cold clones a la Platespin

I'd like to polish a procedure that may be useful for folks that have to do a lot of P2V

The basic idea is to automate a Cold Clone import of a Windows 2000, XP or 2003 physical machine.

Conditions:
you must be admin on a running system for maybe 5 minutes to configure the task and copy the boot-image
the machine must have at least 384 - better 512 MB of RAM
the machine must have a boot.ini

Procedure:
1. configure task
2. add a boot.ini entry and set as default for next boot
3. copy 5 files to C: (or what ever the driveletter of the boot-partition may be
4. schedule a reboot with taskplaner

5. reboot at scheduled time
6. boot into a Livesystem that loads itself into RAM
7. after full load delete boot-files of the Livesystem and reset boot.ini to original version
8. execute pre-configured task

9. optional reboot into regular system

I would like to hear some suggestions for steps 1 and 4 - the rest is basically done

Range of tasks:
blocklevel clone using vmware-vdiskmanager -
filebased-clone into a vmdk mounted on a remote ESX with robocopy
run ghost32
use imagex
...

Possible locations to store the result:
ESX, remote fileserver, local USB-disk, zip-file on a local disk, ....

I assume you do the configure part of the job at any time later using Converter with configure-option.

Hi,

yesterday I found a very nice flash demo about the fault tolerance feature of VI3, somewhere on the vmware.

Now I can not remember the page where it was. Colud you please help me!

I remeber there were other demos, about five of them, on the right side of the screen in box.

Is there a common place for the flash demos?

Thanks!
Training at VMworld
Anyone registered for training during the week prior to VMworld? Looks like the much awaited VMware Infrastructure: Design course is being offered for the first time. VMware is also putting off the VMware Infrastructure 3: Fast Track V3.5 during the same week.
