Update Manager plugin not registering with client

I just recently upgraded my environment from ESX 3.5 U4 with vCenter 2.5 U5 to vSphere U1. I upgraded VUM to 4.0 as well during the upgrade. Now, when I connect to vCenter with the VIClient I am unable to get the VUM plugin to become active. It shows up in the list of available plugins and when I click the install link it installs the plugin, goes to 100% and then goes right back to available status, just like it looked before the install. VUM itself seems to be running as it is download updates, but the plugin cannot be registered correctly with the client for some reason.

I have rebuilt the environment from the ground up except for my vCenter database as well as installing the client on other machines and uninstalling VUM and manually deleting the directories on the client. No dice.

If anyone has any ideas of what the logical next step would be, please drop me a line!
I am capturing CVF6.6 (Compaq Visual Fortran v6.6) with Thinapp 4.0.4 and the captured app can complile a Fortran 90 code and run the compiled executable.

BUT the captured app cannot debug. The problem is that it cannot open the compiled exe file with the error message shown in attached file.

Any suggestions and ideas will be highly appreciated.
Computers can't logon to domain after rebalancing
We are facing some weird problem after rebalancing virtual machines - at the end of the process the machines can't logon to the domain (Windows error message - can't find domain). Manually logon to each machine and re-join it to the domain solves the problem, but, well, you know...

Any idea? We are uisng version 3.5.

Outlook 2010 Beta 2 with ThinApp 4.0.4
As many probably have read, M$ released Office 2010 Beta 2 public a couple of days ago.

We use Exchange/Outlook 2007 in our organization but an upgrade to Exchange 2010 is ongoing.

I tried to thinapp outlook 2010 to run it sidebyside with outlook 2007.

But I just end up with a self-repair dialog immediatly after the profile has been setup.

First I thought the error could be solved by following this blog article http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2008/10/how-to-thinap-1.html adapting it to office14.

But it didn't.

I packed on a clean win xp sp3, no vmware tools or dotnet runtime etc. Anyone succeded in this?
I attached a picture of the error which also has the last two lines on the batch file, if you press continue on this error message "3" times the build batch file finishes and the application virtualization is complete. I can open the app and use it, only thing is I'm wondering why this error message keeps coming up. I changed many settings in the "package.ini", tried differet versions, tried different operating systems (XP SP3 and Windows 7), and I tried many different apps. No matter what I do it this message always appears.
Any help is much appreciated thanks,
Packaging IE 6 as a published application
Hello.

My manager asked me if were possible to use Thinappto create a packeage to deploy IE 6 (pre configured with a specific URL) as published application.

Our users use a proprietary web based application that only works with Internet Explorer version 6. This is rather limiting as it prevents the desktop team from upgrading their desktop images to a newer version of IE or another borwser altogether.

Can Thinapp accomplish this or any opther VMWare product for that matter?

Regards,
VMware View Upgrade?
Hi

I have been using View 3 for a while and have a good working setup, providing desktop to thin clients.

It has become a requirement to move my current physical severs onto my Vmware setup, but according to the EULA the View bundle is for Desktop use only.

What would i need to upgrade to allow me to run server workloads and still be covered under the view licence and not breaking the EULA.

I release that something might need to be purchased or upgraded.

Also i relise that a whole new set of licences and / or hardware may need to be purchased

Thanks.

feature comparison between View3 and View4
Hello,

I am seeking a document which can describe new features of View4 and it's comparison with Vmware View3.

Infact my major concern is to address Soft phones issues, becasue we were unable to use bi-directional voice in view3. I know this issue is more or less related to RDP 6.0 which doesn't support sound upstream and microsoft has catered this issue in RDP 7.0. But again there may be alot of enhancements related to this problem.

Thanks in Advance
The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available

Hey all - Admittedly, I'm new to the VMWare View environment so forgive my ignorance. The problem that I'm having involves a small virtual pool that was recently setup at my company. There are two Virtual Connection Managers (VCM) but there is not a load balancer between them yet. The thin clients are manually pointed to either VCM-01 or VCM-02 to establish a connection. After receiving calls about issues logging in, here is what I've observed:

Certain users can only log into one of the VCM's. For instance, I can log into the webportal on VCM-01 as a certain user and I will receive the "The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available" message. However, I can log into the VCM-02 webportal as that user and it allows access with no issues. Other users can log into both VCM's without a problem.

Does anyone understand why this would happen? I don't believe it's an entitlement issue...the entitlements are pointing to a security group which contains every user.

Thanks for the help,
So, I've been trying to ThinApp Simfatic Forms 3 (http://www.simfatic.com/). Seems to work fine, untill one opens a new project - whence it hangs.
Has anyone tried this? It's captured on Windows XP SP3 (and tested to work during the capture process) using ThinApp 4.0.3.

Rebuilding it using ThinApp 4.0.4 generates an error instantly after ThinApp loads the program
Start view client silent
We have been testing VMWare view extensively to run on a kiosk type configuration. Thanks to the very informative posts here, we are able to auto start the client to log on, select a image from the pool and log itself on the view server without interaction from the user.

I had been looking at the options available when starting the view client app from the guest pc, i could not find any mention of having it start silent. Is this option available in starting the client? We would like to "hide" the windows that come up when the app start (ie, view log on screen, etc.)

Has anyone figured out a way within the start up option for view client to do this?

Thanks

It seems that when our end-users do a lot of copying+pasting when using PowerPoint 07, Excel 07, or Word 07, it stores directly in the Office Clipboard (it stores up to 24 items), and this causes their VDI Workstation to freeze up. Essentially, their taskbar becomes inactive, but they can still (slowly) navigate through Windows Explorer. My current resolution is just to end the OFFLB.exe or Office application process (taskkill /PID ### /F) so they can continue with their work.

However, this is just one scenario of memory consumption that happens. This also occurs when using this free graphics viewer called irfanview to resize an image, or crop it, etc. Also happens when navigating through open windows in Windows Explorer.

I guess I would like recommendations on how to tackle this issue.

I thought it might have been a memory balloon issue as referenced in these two articles:

http://www.vi3book.com/index.php/articles-mainmenu-62/mgmt-and-monitoring-mainmenu-68/96-memory-behavior-when-vm-limits-are-set

http://www.van-lieshout.com/2009/04/esx-memory-management-part-1/

I guess it wasn't. So, I guess I'm rather clueless on how to tackle this issue since it could be a lot of things. Any tools or tips would be great

Our production environment is not using VMWare View. However, we are using Virtual Center 2.5 and VDI.

We have about 40+ Windows XP VMs right now, with essentially the same template (VMware Virtual Platform):

CPU = Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5345 @ 2.33 Ghz x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~2333 Mhz

Memory = 512 MB of RAM

<strike>Total Physical Memory = 512.00 MB; Available Physical Memory = 117.37 MB; Total Virtual Memory = 2.00 GB; Available Virtual Memory = 1.96 GB; Page File Space = 1.22 GB; Page File = C:\pagefile.sys</strike>

HDD = 10 GB (VMware Virtual Disk SCSI Disk Device)

SCSI and RAID controllers = LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series, w/1020/1030

Display Adapter = VMware SVGA II

IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers = Intel (r) 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE IDE Controller, and Primary IDE Channel

NIC = VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter

Getting error "login form has expired" Please try again

I have a client that is using a Sprint Air Card to connect to our VDI environment. He is able to connect to the Internet and access our VPN, but when he hits the View Portal and tries to Authenticate, he gets " Login Form has expired. Please Try again". I had him clear his IE cache, but that did not help.

If he plugs his laptop directly into a router that has the Sprint Card plugged into it with an ethernet cable, it works fine. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Problems when i try to log on to a virtual desktop using VMware View 3.1.2

Hello, I need advice or help on the following:
In my workplace has been implemented the VMware VDI and use HP Thin Client terminals, where the operating system of the Thin Client is Windows XP Embedded in Spanish, I have the version 3.1.2 of Vmware View, my pool is non persistent and i have two virtuals for the pool. I get the following problem when entering through a Thin Client for the view, when I select the pool of connections should I give a virtual but I get the message "timed out" but in Spanish and is rare because the view is in English and also i have two virtuals free, so i can take one of them because the pool is non persistent but i don´t understand.
Someone knows what is this type of error, for a moment I thought it was a problem related tio the DHCP of the thin client that has not resolved the names, so I edit the file host of the Thin Client, but after a few tests I receive that error again.

Accessing manual pool internally and externall
Hi

I have a View 3.1 infrastructure with a Security server for external users and a Connection server for internal users. Unfortunately I have a few users who need to access their machine either internally when in the office or externally when working away from the office.

Initial solution was to create a small pool of manual desktops that can be accessed both internally and externally. Initial testing appeared to work. However I now appear to only be able to connect from one side and see waiting for agent on one of the view management servers.

Within the registry key HKLM\Software\VMWareInc\VmwareVDM\Agent\Configuration there two options for Broker & initial Broker ?

Is there anyway of configuring this registry key to toggle settings

regards
ThinApp 4.0.3 Folder Creation

Hi there.

Hope you can help and can explain what I am trying to do. I install and application that is hardcoded to initially create and read an .ini file located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

When I thinapp the application, it now l creates the APPFile.ini in location:

D:\Documents and Settings\%username\Application Data\Thinstall\APPCaptureFolder\%AppData%\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

(The D drive is a local drive that is used to store profile settings etc). Question is how can I create the folder D:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\ so can manually copy the file into it?

I have created the folder path before capturing the application but it does not create the folder. I have used there 'Merged' option when capturing the app.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Cheers,
Exchange 2003 System manager on VIrtual XP Client

Hello,

I am trying to install the Exchange2003 System Manager tools on a Virtual (XP) PC.

I have installed the tools in the same way as I do on physical XP cients but on the virtualised PC message tracking always fails with:

Access denied

Facilitr: Win32

Both machines are members of the domain and have the same group policy applied.

Message tracking on the physical PC works without any problem.

Does anyon have any suggestions how I can fix this?

Hi all,

I have View 3.1.2.

To connect to Virtual Desktops I use View Client installed on Windows XP SP3 machines. On that client are defined some printers via Novell.

I wonder if Thinprint integrated in View is able to redirect the Novell printers to Virtual Desktops (which have Novell Client installed), and if yes, if I need to install printers drivers or not.

Thanks

Hi there,

I've implemented a Site with 60 VM's 6 Servers (DNS, DOMAIN, DHCP...) and 54 VDI workstation with WinXP,

I've 3 ESXservers + Storage SAN + SAI

I have been making some disaster recovery test, and i'd like to know, which are the RTO (Recovery Time Objectives)
to have the plataform ready ?

I've measured the RTO making a system 0 (cut off the ligth) and i have not the system ready until 30 minutes.

Is it too much time? or is it a good RTO time ?

As far as i know it isn't a good time but a need another experiences.

Best regards
adding view connection server

hello,

i currently have a beta environment configured with my view connection server running as a vm on the same host as all of my virtual desktops. performance has been less than ideal. furthermore, my users are now reporting that when they intiate a login they receive one of two error messages stating that:

a) "The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available. Please try again later." OR

b) " All available desktop sources for this desktop are currently busy. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your systems administrator."

i'm thinking that if i add a physical view connection server this should resolve the issue. looking for confirmation on that and also the steps involved in adding a second connection server and/or replacing my current conncetion server all together.

PCoIP Client Auto-login to View 4?

Hello All,

I've got someone at Teradici looking into this for me as well. Does anyone know if a PCoIP hardware client like the Wyse P20 or Samsung 930ND will have the capability to auto-login to View 4? We have a number of public use endpoints that automatically login to a Windows desktop session when we power them on and want to duplicate that functionality with PCoIP.
View Composer install fails during upgrade 1.0 to 1.1

During an upgrade form View 3.0 to 3.1 the View Composer upgrade fails. It goes through the motions until it has copied all the files and then it just fails, tells me to press "Finished" and retry the install at a later time. It says "no changes have been made", but I now no longer have a directory for the View Composer in \Program Files\VMware and I'm pretty sure there was one prior to the attempted upgrade.

Vmware View server and clients in a cross forest scenario ?

Hello !
Have tried to search if there is any answers regarding my question but haven't found any...if there are please redirect me to that/those answers =)

My question is if it is possible to deploy one VMware View server in Forest A and deploy View clients to Forest B (besides deploying View clients to forest A). The forests will have a forest trust between them and appropriate DNS-settings. The reason why there are two forest is due to security reasons and different organizational structures, but the customer in question would like to be able to (re)use the Vmware View server that they already have deployed in forest A, and have it deploying View clients to users in forest B.
Recompose Operation - Most VM's staying on

Gidday guys, I might be missing something obvious, but with a persistant pool we have set up here we're seeing on recompose operations nearly all machines being left on at the tail end of.

The provisioning settings are min 3 / max 40 / available 2, VM's set to power off when not in use, immediate logoff after disconnect and a 7 day OS refresh.

This isn't a massive problem at the moment as it's sort of a live trial, but we're not far off going fully live as all other things are working beautifully, and will be shifting to better hardware with a much larger pool, and this is where we see potential resource problems.

To give an example the pool was recomposed 3 - 4 days ago, there are currently no VM's in use, yet of the 33 machines that have been generated so far in the pool there are 13 "powered on" (where I'd expect to see only 2 not yet allocated VM's), and when initially the pool was recomposed nearly all were on and stayed on, they only seem to be shutting down after "their" user logs into them and logs out to trigger the "power off when not in use". Our concern is when we move to hardware that we expect to be able to run 80 - 90 VM's concurrently, but we expect 300-400ish users initially, that these 300 - 400 VMs are not going to shut themselves back down after a recompose and severely chew into the resources available.

Anyone got any ideas on this one?

Can't connect to desktop on View server over the Internet
Hello, I'm stumped on this and hope someone can help. I have a View environment setup (ESXi/vCenter/View) and everything works fine if I'm connecting on the same LAN network segment (all machines on the 192.168.x.x network etc). However, when I try to access the desktop across the Internet I can not get things to work. I can connect to the View server, log in there, get a listing of the available desktops and when I go to connect nothing happens. On a HP t5145 the Thinconnect manager switches to active, on a live cd (thinstation.org) the connection never occurs- stays stuck on connecting to the desktop. After a long while the message is the desktop has unexpectedly disconnected (never displayed a desktop)

If I watch the desktop I'm trying to connect to, an XP machine, I can see the local user get logged off when I try and connect from the thin client across the Internet. Everything is flowing to the VM, not sure where things are getting messed up after this. The firewall for this network shows nothing getting dropped/blocked, 443 is forwarded to the View server. I've tried direct connect option on the View server, FQDN and IP's for both the external address on the View server and the thin clients. I've setup a different View server with no change. Logs on the VM machine look ok from what I can tell, I've ran packet captures on the View and vCenter server, seems ok. Had some TCP or IP checksum errors corrected with disabling the offload options on the NIC.

Works on a local loop, everything works logging into the View and displaying available desktops, local user logged out on the VM but the desktop is never truly connected/displayed.

Any help greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks- Marty

Logon scripts on VMWare View 3.1.2

Hello.

We have been using Citrix to present desktops to clients for about 3 years now. We have several group policy objects that are in used based on the container that users are in. In these GPOs we do things like restrict control panel access, access to the registry, remove common program group, etc. We also run login scripts that map particular drives and copy down some ini files and run a process that reads keys into the local HKCU based on an extract that we do on logout (to save user settings).

This all works well in Citrix.

We are testing a VMware View 3.1.2 implementation.

Using similar GPOs (though brand new, as the test environment is in its own new domain), we are able to restrict the desktop, copy the ini files down, read the values out of the registry on log out, read values into the registry on login and map network drives.

About 50% of the time, the login process works without a hitch. The users map the drive letters, the registry entries get read in (we can see this using a verbose command) and the world is golden.

The other 50% of the time, it looks like the GPO is not read in. I re enabled access to the start menu and access to the command prompt and even when the GPOs are not applied, gpresult shows that the correct GPOs are applied and in the correct order.

We are using a mandatory profile for standard login.

Any thoughts on why the login scripts don't run sometimes?

The client machines are VMs of Windows XP Pro spk3, 32 bit.. The servers are 64 bit Windows 2003, SPK2, Using GPMC to modify GPOs.

I can a attach HTML outputs of the GPOs and text of the login scripts if required.

VM ACE vs VDI Offline desktop

Can someone highlight the differances between VM ACE vs VDI offline desktop? We are looking to deploy encrpyted sessions to workstations. Mainly because we do not want anything from the host OS infecting anything in an isolated environment like ACE. Does offline desktop accomplish anything like this? Like to maybe keep a key logger from getting keystrokes inside an offline desktop?
Issue with single sign on on SOME desktop pools
Hallo

We have a client with VMware View 3.1.2 installed. It is running on an ESX3 update4 environment. The client has noticed that after a patch, update or after adding a new program or software, that the single sign on does not work anymore. If you disconnect from the VM and reconnect to it, it works 100% fine, but not as soon as you connect to a "fresh" VM. If the VMware View agent on the base is reloaded, this problem disappears, but the client would not like to do this each and every time.

Any suggestions or possible starting points for troubleshooting?

Hi,

I tried to make a portable for Catia P3 V5R19. The package was made for both Thinstall and the USB options. The executable from the bin folder is not working for both options. I noticed that the executable icon on the desktop for the original installation has to provoke an environment like this:

"C:\Program Files\Dassault Systemes\B19\intel_a\code\bin\CATSTART.exe" -run "CNEXT.exe" -env CATIA_P3.V5R19.B19 -direnv "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\DassaultSystemes\CATEnv" -nowindow"

Is there any solution for this?

We are evaluating the possible deployment of the Intergraph application, SmartPlant 3D, with the Thinapp virtualization technology.

We use, for testing purposes, the evaluation version that it is availably in the web page.

In all the cases that we execute the virtual application we get an error of not found DLL (perfkrnl.dll), but the file is in such directory.

We tried to solve the problem making changes to the windows system path during the capture process without sucessfull results. Also, we use the parameter ExternalDLLs, in BuildOptions of the Package.ini file with the same results. And finally, we try to copy the dll file in the %SystemSystem% folder.

What we can do to solve this problem?

Anybody are using the Intergraph program with Thinapp encapsulation?
I can get it to work on a thin client with the View client installed and some reg hacks, but what about someone using View Web access? Is there a way for someone to use the web front end and have credentials passed to the novel client so they just login one time? Currently they have to login to View (Web) then the Novell window prompts them to login again. Anyone know if this is even possible? Thanks

Not sure that this is a good direction. What I'm trying to gain is an object/component that I can embed into web pages and will give me a sand boxed part the user can browse web pages without compromising his/hers machine.
Windows update breaks some ThinApp packages ?

Hi,

Today, my Adobe Reader 9.1.3 ThinApp package doesn't work anymore!
details:

ThinApp 4.0.3.3313

captured on Windows XP SP3 (32 bit) VM

was working yesterday!

some Windows update got installed yesterday ( I think they are one week older but I was in hollydays so the computer was turned off)

package still works on Windows XP SP3 (32 bit)

package doesn't work any more on Windows Vista x64 with a standard user account (but it still works with admin account!)

I get a "Runtime error" by the C Runtime Library

I tried to rebuild the package and I still get the same error

I tried to execute it on a previous Windows Vista x64 image where last update were not installed, and package works again!

So I'm pretty sure an update to the OS broke something, but I'll have to check each one to see which is culprit.

Can anybody confirm that ?
I hope upcoming 4.0.4 version will solve this!

thanks
OLE-Integration to Office 2007 (OLE to Office 2003 functions well with ThinApp)
Hello!

I have thinapped our ERM system with has two plugins. One is the Oracle Forms and Reports Client and the second a MS Office package.

The ERM system creates docs via OLE in combination with MS word. With a thin-apped Office 2003 there's no problem. So I have inserted the optional plugin in the package ini of the ERM thinapped system.

Next I've tried the same with MS Office 2007 as Thinapp-package. But the link between the ERM system and Office 2007 via Thinapp is broken; there's no chance to write docs.

Do you have any advices for OLE with Office 2007 as thinapp? I've already read that Thinapp doesn't support any OLE, but it still works with a thinapped Office 2003.

Yours sincerely

Modify published ACE VMs
Hello,

I have about 25 PCs in my department. All these PCs have a local copy of the same ACE VM. This ACE VM is updated once a month.

So when the VM is out of date I deactivate this VM in the Management Server. Now all the 25 PCs need the updated Version of the ACE VM.

At the moment the users manually copy the new ACE VM from a network share to their local computer. When all users are doing this the same time the performace is pretty slow

-> Is there a way to automate this task, perhaps at night? So that the useres allways have the most recent VM without any manual installation?
(I know about the silent Installation for the ACE Package, but how do I get the Package on the PC?)

Thanks for help!

ACE futile performance test?
So I have a client that wants to use VM ACE to deploy desktops. Mainly because of it's security features. I've been working with ESX for many years, but I'm pretty new to Workstation and Ace. I get the whole concept and I've been reading through the best practice guides. I'm pretty sure the current team of guys are building the VM's incorrectly. I was hoping to run a crazy test on my own.

Does anything think it would be futile to try and run a 3D game or watch an HD movie from an ACE session?

I've got a pretty good lab at home and I was thinking of running some tests since Workstation 7 just got released. I was thinking of building a striped down Windows 7 machine. I've got a lots of RAM / CPU and a kick a$$ video card in one of my systems. I know the new PCoIP can do all of this from a thin client, but I'm gonna see what results I can get locally.

Wyse devices connected to a Vmware 3.1.1 view server are getting random lock ups and odd errors in the event log. All of which I am unable to track down. I have adjusted the TCPTimeout in the wnos.ini file but this has not resolved my issue. Any ideas?

Hi all.

I made a big mistake with my security server (didn't back it up) and now i have a bad server. Can't boot teh server because of a stop erro and now i have to rebuild it. I think i have everything done. Copied the config file to the appropriate directory, made all ip addresses the same and istalled the software. When i try to go to either the IP addrss or the FQDN, i can get to the login screen, login with my credentials but after that i get teh following messages...A connection to the View Server could not be established. and The connection to the View Connection Server is not started. That is it. What am i missing? I can login just fine inside teh office but can't externally. Any help is appreciated. I am running Views 3.1.2. Thanks.
Vmware View hangs when discovering VC
hi guys

Sometimes (not all the time) when I am working with Vmware View Version 3.1.1 and adding new desktops my View Servers hangs when I press the Next Button,

it hangs here, you select you VC server I click next and Vmware View just stops there the only way to get it back is rebooting the Vmware View Services on windows or rebooting the physical server but this takes all my View sessions down so my users get impacted.

I added the screen when I got stuck

any idea what could be causing this issue?

thanks a lot

Virtualizing an app with set configurations

When I virtualize a certain application with thinapp it creates problems because when I install the app I have to enter set configurations. These configurations are network settings that help identify the system on the network so this creates a problem with potability. Is there any way to virtualize with THinapp without having to run the install file and configure the application or any other ideas that could help would be appreciated.

VMware View in a POS environment
I am thinking of deploying a POS system of five virtual desktops using VMware View on a centralized server. These 5 virtual desktops will need to be separate and independent images but interact with each other through the POS software.

I was wondering if anyone has had some experience doing this and what setup seems to work. I am aiming towards a more efficient business practice as well as saving money by using thin clients and a centralized server.

Thank You,
Also, before i performed the second snapshot i made sure that the autodesk licensing service (AdskScSrv.exe) was stopped. The application build was performed on a completely clean Vmware workstation. When I try to launch the thinapped application on either the machine I did the snashop on, or on anormal machine i recieve the error message FATAL ERROR: Unhandled c0000096h Exception at 246149bh

I have captured all the trace logs from both systems and they are all identical and used windif to scan the files and all files are identical according to windif. I was hoping to get any other ideas of what could be wrong it seems like it is a dependecy fro some reason it works on the system it is Virtualized on but not when I move it.

How are you licensing your VDI projects? FPP or VECD

Just curious because I am not Microsoft SA and Full Package Product (FPP) seems to be alot cheaper in the long run... But technically if you go FPP you cannot Vmotion or enable HA/DRS on your cluster because the FPP is tided to the intial host it was spun up on... VECD, not being SA customer is like $110 per year per device licenses for the first 3 years then $30 per year after that.
I saw also the comment of a user with the same problem, but no solution.
The Versions i've used is OpenOffice 3.1.1 (German) and ThinApp 4.0.3 (3313).

By the way, if i start the installed OpenOffice on the machine where the ThinApp is installed, the spellchecker is working.

Is this a Problem of ThinApp, or did someone have a solution?
Hi,

I'm looking for a correct sizing of view composer database (1 VC, 2 ESX 1 and about 200 desktops), admin guide explain howto install it, even on the same instance as vcenter's but I can't find any information about sizing.

Any help, feedback would be nice

Remote desktop to host machine

Hi All,

I have vmware ace running on my host machine and have setup a couple of virtual images to run on the machine. I am now remote desktoping to the host machine from another site and I am able to start the Virtual machine up. However when I try to input into the virtual machine it does not except input, the mouse does not work nor the keyboard. Have tryed the Ctrl G for direct input and that does not work. I am able to move the Ace screen around, communicate with the vmware player menu and even take a snapshot of the machine. It is just the actual virtual OS machine I cannot use.
Am I missing a setting or is it not possible to use a virtual machine when remoting to the host machine via remote desktop?

Thanks in advance,

When recomposing our Vista 32bit business machines with a new image, we are suddenly getting a error during recompose: "Interrupted during LDAP operation"

The machine remains in a powered down state. Manually starting the machine, it boots up, then reboots and everything seems to be normal, as if the recompose was finished okay, but the task in the View Administrator still showsa task of "Recompose" with a status of "ready", and still shows the old base image description. Any ideas?
Access to VM guest console
Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas on how to connect, through a broker, direct to the console of the VM guest (XP) rather than an RDP session?

We have a range of virtual machines running locally on user desktops which are used to support our customers over various VPN solutions, some of which are not split tunneled.

I want to centralise the virtual desktops onto our ESX kit but can't find a way to mimc console access to the guests; as soon as the user connected to the machine over RDP establishes the VPN they lose the RDP session. I've tried multiple NICs, one for the VPN adapter to bind to and one for VMWare View but I can't find any way to tell it which adapter to bind to.

The best solution I've managed so far is to use Leostream Connect and redirect though the web interface to the "remote console URL", but this is far from ideal.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

We get an error at the view login page when the cable is pulled, and no activity in the logs on the secondary RSA.
View Security Server loses communications to View Manager

We've had nothing problems with our View install. We started out with a Thin Client deployment that went down in very expensive flames. Since then we have regrouped and tried to salvage some bit of its use. Attached is a drawing of our planned environment. It is mostly in place. However, we don't have the F5 load balancers in yet, nor do we have any of the load balancing of security or management servers for View.

Randomly the View Security Server (VSS from now on) will lose connectivity to the View Manager Server (VMS). When we attempt to connect from the outside, it will time out. I can telnet to the server on 80 and 443, but the page never comes up. When I attempt to connect internally (the URL is the same but external DNS resolves it to our VSS and internal DNS resolves it to the VMS) it works just fine. From the VSS I can telnet to the VMS on all needed ports, so I am pretty certain that it isn't a firewall issue. Sometimes a restart will fix this, sometimes just testing with telnet will fix it.

I've worked with Vmware support and sent them log file after log file. There was never and real fix. It just started working again and we closed the case. It is not working now. Anybody else seen this issue or have any tips for me?

We have an application that requires specific settings per user within the shortcut icon that we place on the desktop. We place this in the d: drive of the user data disk under /docs and settings/all users/desktop. The problem is when we recompose the image, it disappears.
...of AppSync, MSI's and limited user accounts
We use MS SCCM to deploy all our thinapped applications via their MSI files. This works just fine... apps are installed silently in the background (to shared folder C:\ThinApps) and are available for all users.

All users are regular domain users, i.e. they don't have any administrative or power user rights.

Our problem occours when we deploy an update. This is done by putting the update thinapps on a file share, and having the corresponding AppSyncURL in the packages.

Upon launch it creates the .ASL file (which I presume is the file to see when it last checked for an update) and begins to download an .ASE (which I guess is the new .EXE).

However, since they are regular users ThinApp seems to not be able to replace the original .EXE and we are left with a duplicate .1 file. Which means redundant data storage...

Any way to fix this?

Another issue... if an administrator happens to start an app on these machines the admin created .ASE is unavailable to users, meaning they'll never check for updates(?). Additionally, when run as an admin the files won't be renamed to either .EXE or .1, just leaving the .ASE there.

Any fix to this apart from manually resetting file security information and making any user able to delete any application?

Hello

I'd connected a bar code scanner to a thin client (hp windows CE 6) and redirect usb port to a vm (XP SP3) with rdp. I see that the bar code is installed in the device manager (human interface device) and everythings look find but when I use it, it write strange characters (é$£...).

Then I try to connect the bar code to a anywhereUSB box.

Like with rdp, the HID looks find in the vm but when I use it nothning is writing.

I looked KB Article: 1011600 but in the registry of the vm I don't have "HKLM\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\USB\" but "HKLM\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\plugins\wsnm\usb"

got a idea?

Error in the RPC receive loop: RpcIn: Unable to send

I can't find anything at all from googling this. Has anyone seen it before or know of any reason why this could be happening?

It's very frustrating for our users as it means they can't do anything until someone from IT support reboots the VM, which seems to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated!

View Security Server
Hi

I am in the process of creating a View 3.1.2 Build 188088 on ESX3.5 U4 with VC 2.5 U4.

I can create and access XP Desktop VM's from the local 192.168 Lan based Connection Server. The issue is when connecting to the Security Server over the Internet

The Security server is a W2K3 server with two NICs.. The internal facing is on the 192.168.1 subnet and the external facing is on the 10. subnet. For testing purposes I have disabled the Windows firewall. The extrnal firewall is on a 92.x.x.x subnet.

I have tried various configurations for the setting the External URL to point to the IP address of the firewall but I get a message "The View Connection Server connection failed. The View Connection Server request timed out"

We have set a rule on the firewall for all traffic on the 92.x.x.x to be Natted to the 10. subnet.

Any ideas would be aapreciated

View Manager sizing if it is a VM and not physical server
Hi,

Based on the manual, 1 View Manager (run on physical server with 2 CPU) can support 1000 users.

Appreciate help on:

1. Is the above 2 cores or 2 sockets (which means 8 cores in Xeon 5500)?

2. If we run View Manager as a VM, how many desktop VMs (with 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, ample CPU in underlying ESX with Xeon 5500 chip) can it handle?

Thank you from Singapore
VMView - slow when accessed from Vista PC
Hello,

We are currently demoing VMWare View to provide desktops (via RDP) to certain users within our business for the purpose of testing our internal software. The desktops we are delivering are Windows XP.

The problem we are having occurs when a user logs on to the Win XP RDP from a Windows Vista PC - it runs so slowly that its almost unusable, however the same Win XP RDP runs perfectly when accessed from a Windows XP deskto. It seems like a very strange error because the all thephysical desktops are on the same network, RDP from a Vista desktopto a server works perfectly fine, plus the processing for the Win XP RDP should all be taking place on the server, not on the Vista physical desktop. Does anyone know of an issue or a resolution for this problem?

Regards,

Hello!

I have a small VMware View (newest 3.x Version) environment with one Connection Server and one Security Server in the DMZ.

How is it possible to create and entitle a specific poll only for the internal communication.
At this time all pools are the same from the internal connection with the Connection Server and from the Security Server.

I want to create a pool, entitle for specific user group and the user can only see this pool over the internal connection server and not over the security server.

Thank you for your help!
ThinAPP vs InstallFree
Has anyone tried InstallFree? We are a ThinAPP shop for now, but it is becoming a pain in neck to work with Vmware's incompetent customer support and their non-disclosure policies. Anyway, we had a demo of InstallFree and it definitely has some cool features that ThinAPP is lacking - complete shell integration, easy process to upgrade packages (ThinAPP has one too but it never worked for us), no clean machine required to capture your packages and light-weight application provisioning tool that integrates very well with AD. They said they are releasing 64-bit support in January and I think it will be a serious competitor for ThinAPP. We will give it a serious consideration to make a switch when they have the 64-bit support.

If anyone of you have used InstallFree, can you share your experiences?

Thinapp Application slow launching times

Hello,

I have 2 questions.

1) When I create a package i am getting 2 files- one with .dat extension and another with .exe extension.
I would like to have just one package with .exe entension ( I have seen demos with 800mb single exe file thinapp package)

2) I created a thinapp package (followed Thinapp guide) . The problem is, when i launch the package within an administrator account, it takes 3 minutes to launch. In a non administrator account it takes 20 sec to launch. ( The application package requires don net 1.1 and 2). I have tried packaging dont net and applications in different thin app pacages and app linking, but with the same result.

Thank you

View issue with thin clients - login -
hi guys

Product Versions:

ESX 3.5

View Manager and client 3.1

Few days ago we had our VMs around 120 in Port Group Testing and yesterday we changed it to Deployment VLAN ID 21.

Now some Thin clients don't loguin at the first time. I mean the user power on the Thin Client he has to log in to Active Directory(AD) to have access to his View Windows Image and load it.

But for some users they try to log to the AD and if fails andif they try few minutes later they can log in without problems.

What could be the issue? I was thinking that (I am home and I could not TS the issue) I need to change the View Server to that VLAN 35 since maybe some Clients are not connecting as they should to the View Server.

Any other idea?

thanks a lot

Hi.

We want to send a virtual machine to one supplier in an USB disk, to let him edit some confidential data. We want to let read and modify this data, and eventually print, but to restrict copy or extract from hard disk.

Supplier won't have access to our network.

Can ACE protect virtual machine for this scenario? is this totally secure?
Pool empty but unable to connect
I have 5 computers that I am using to connect to a pool of 5 linked clones. It's a persistent pool.

The computers that are connecting to the pool of linked clones are WYSE terminals that are on rolling carts. The carts are connecting to the pool wirelessly. I have 5 carts, so I created a pool of 5 linked clones.

The first issue I am having is that I am constantly getting calls that one of the carts cannot connect because all of the linked clones are already in use. I only have 5 ID's that can connect to the pool and no one else would try to connect to them (they have no need or use to). But if I ask someone to log out of the cart, the cart that couldnt connect will connect but now the cart that was connected cant connect.

If I go into the Desktop Sources tab of the pool the only ID I see connected is my domain ID but I am not logged into any of the clones. BUT the other clones show no user connected even though there are connections. The user box is blank but I know the clones are connected to and in use. It seems like for some reason that at one time when I logged into one of the clones that VMview is not releasing the session even though I am not logged in.

As I said they are connecting wirelessly so I dont know if that has anything to do with it either since they do sometimes lose there connection for a coupld seconds.

General packaging went really well but I'm trying to make my package a little more useful by configuring Outlook to autoconfigure the user profile.

I installed Office 2003 with a transform that specifies the profile generation behavior.

After packaging and running outlook, Outlook tries to connect to the target exchange server and prompts for credentials. It doesn't accept any of the credentials provided and errors out.

The machine is on the correct domain and a valid user is logged in.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Terminal services via View 3.1.1 - printer mapping issue
Hey guys,

wierd issue - in addition to using virtual desktops we have installed the view agent on terminal servers using the secure gateway/VDM to deliver desktops for external staff over SSL works like a charm, all was good until a recent upgrade to v3.1.1 due to the tunnel drop out issue. Now client printer mapping no longer works for our staff. If you connect direct via RDP to the terminal server bypassing view it still works but not via View. I m assuming that the upgrade to v3.1.1 has introduced something that has disabled client printer mapping? I ve read about thin print but not sure if this is the problem child or not?

Has anyone got any ideas on this? and if so is it possible to get client printer mapping going again as this is proving to be a real pain. BTW we are running Windows 2003 ts RC2 SP2

thanks in advance

Dan
