Problem in Capturing CVF6.6 - Cannot Debug

I am capturing CVF6.6 (Compaq Visual Fortran v6.6) with Thinapp 4.0.4 and the captured app can complile a Fortran 90 code and run the compiled executable.

BUT the captured app cannot debug. The problem is that it cannot open the compiled exe file with the error message shown in attached file.

Any suggestions and ideas will be highly appreciated.
Outlook 2010 Beta 2 with ThinApp 4.0.4
As many probably have read, M$ released Office 2010 Beta 2 public a couple of days ago.

We use Exchange/Outlook 2007 in our organization but an upgrade to Exchange 2010 is ongoing.

I tried to thinapp outlook 2010 to run it sidebyside with outlook 2007.

But I just end up with a self-repair dialog immediatly after the profile has been setup.

First I thought the error could be solved by following this blog article http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2008/10/how-to-thinap-1.html adapting it to office14.

But it didn't.

I packed on a clean win xp sp3, no vmware tools or dotnet runtime etc. Anyone succeded in this?

Error message at end of build: tlink.exe - No Disk
I attached a picture of the error which also has the last two lines on the batch file, if you press continue on this error message "3" times the build batch file finishes and the application virtualization is complete. I can open the app and use it, only thing is I'm wondering why this error message keeps coming up. I changed many settings in the "package.ini", tried differet versions, tried different operating systems (XP SP3 and Windows 7), and I tried many different apps. No matter what I do it this message always appears.

Any help is much appreciated thanks,
Packaging IE 6 as a published application
Hello.

My manager asked me if were possible to use Thinappto create a packeage to deploy IE 6 (pre configured with a specific URL) as published application.

Our users use a proprietary web based application that only works with Internet Explorer version 6. This is rather limiting as it prevents the desktop team from upgrading their desktop images to a newer version of IE or another borwser altogether.

Can Thinapp accomplish this or any opther VMWare product for that matter?

Regards,
Simfatic Forms hangs when ThinApped

So, I've been trying to ThinApp Simfatic Forms 3 (http://www.simfatic.com/). Seems to work fine, untill one opens a new project - whence it hangs.

Has anyone tried this? It's captured on Windows XP SP3 (and tested to work during the capture process) using ThinApp 4.0.3.

Rebuilding it using ThinApp 4.0.4 generates an error instantly after ThinApp loads the program

AppName: simfaticforms.exe AppVer: 3.0.5.175 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

Looks like it didn't take kindly to being virtualized...

ThinApp 4.0.3 Folder Creation

Hi there.

Hope you can help and can explain what I am trying to do. I install and application that is hardcoded to initially create and read an .ini file located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

When I thinapp the application, it now l creates the APPFile.ini in location:

D:\Documents and Settings\%username\Application Data\Thinstall\APPCaptureFolder\%AppData%\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

(The D drive is a local drive that is used to store profile settings etc). Question is how can I create the folder D:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\ so can manually copy the file into it?

I have created the folder path before capturing the application but it does not create the folder. I have used there 'Merged' option when capturing the app.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Cheers,
Portable for Catia P3V5R19
Hi,

I tried to make a portable for Catia P3 V5R19. The package was made for both Thinstall and the USB options. The executable from the bin folder is not working for both options. I noticed that the executable icon on the desktop for the original installation has to provoke an environment like this:

"C:\Program Files\Dassault Systemes\B19\intel_a\code\bin\CATSTART.exe" -run "CNEXT.exe" -env CATIA_P3.V5R19.B19 -direnv "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\DassaultSystemes\CATEnv" -nowindow"

Is there any solution for this?

DLL execution error with SmartPlant3D
We are evaluating the possible deployment of the Intergraph application, SmartPlant 3D, with the Thinapp virtualization technology.

We use, for testing purposes, the evaluation version that it is availably in the web page.

In all the cases that we execute the virtual application we get an error of not found DLL (perfkrnl.dll), but the file is in such directory.

We tried to solve the problem making changes to the windows system path during the capture process without sucessfull results. Also, we use the parameter ExternalDLLs, in BuildOptions of the Package.ini file with the same results. And finally, we try to copy the dll file in the %SystemSystem% folder.

What we can do to solve this problem?

Anybody are using the Intergraph program with Thinapp encapsulation?

Embeding a ThinApp packaged application into a web page

Hi again and thank you for a timely and useful information.

I'm trying to find how (if at all) is it possible to embed a packaged application (for example the browser I've already packaged) into a web page?
Not sure that this is a good direction. What I'm trying to gain is an object/component that I can embed into web pages and will give me a sand boxed part the user can browse web pages without compromising his/hers machine.

Thanks in advance,

some Windows update got installed yesterday ( I think they are one week older but I was in hollydays so the computer was turned off)

package still works on Windows XP SP3 (32 bit)

package doesn't work any more on Windows Vista x64 with a standard user account (but it still works with admin account!)

I get a "Runtime error" by the C Runtime Library

I tried to rebuild the package and I still get the same error

I tried to execute it on a previous Windows Vista x64 image where last update were not installed, and package works again!

So I'm pretty sure an update to the OS broke something, but I'll have to check each one to see which is culprit.

Can anybody confirm that ?
I hope upcoming 4.0.4 version will solve this!

thanks
OLE-Integration to Office 2007 (OLE to Office 2003 functions well with ThinApp)
Hello!

I have thinapped our ERM system with has two plugins. One is the Oracle Forms and Reports Client and the second a MS Office package.

The ERM system creates docs via OLE in combination with MS word. With a thin-apped Office 2003 there's no problem. So I have inserted the optional plugin in the package ini of the ERM thinapped system.

Next I've tried the same with MS Office 2007 as Thinapp-package. But the link between the ERM system and Office 2007 via Thinapp is broken; there's no chance to write docs.

Do you have any advices for OLE with Office 2007 as thinapp? I've already read that Thinapp doesn't support any OLE, but it still works with a thinapped Office 2003.

Yours sincerely
When I virtualize a certain application with thinapp it creates problems because when I install the app I have to enter set configurations. These configurations are network settings that help identify the system on the network so this creates a problem with potability. Is there any way to virtualize with THinapp without having to run the install file and configure the application or any other ideas that could help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to thinapp autocad 2009 and thus far I've had no luck. The isolation mode is set to merged. Also, before i performed the second snapshot i made sure that the autodesk licensing service (AdskScSrv.exe) was stopped. The application build was performed on a completely clean Vmware workstation. When I try to launch the thinapped application on either the machine I did the snashop on, or on anormal machine i recieve the error message FATAL ERROR: Unhandled c0000096h Exception at 246149bh

When that package get's moved to a system with a different computer name it no longer works unless I change the name of the computer to the same name as the system I created the app on. Is there anything I can do regarding computer names or virtual computer names to fix this problem so the app can be portable?

I have captured all the trace logs from both systems and they are all identical and used windif to scan the files and all files are identical according to windif. I was hoping to get any other ideas of what could be wrong it seems like it is a dependecy fro some reason it works on the system it is Virtualized on but not when I move it.

OpenOffice Spell Checking
Hello, i've tried to virtualize OpenOffice. It works fine, but the spell checker doesn't work in virtualization.

Also i've found http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2009/03/how-to-create-a-thinapp-package-of-open-office-or-star-office.html but this doesn't help me. I saw also the comment of a user with the same problem, but no solution.

The Versions i've used is OpenOffice 3.1.1 (German) and ThinApp 4.0.3 (3313).

By the way, if i start the installed OpenOffice on the machine where the ThinApp is installed, the spellchecker is working.

Is this a Problem of ThinApp, or did someone have a solution?

...of AppSync, MSI's and limited user accounts
We use MS SCCM to deploy all our thinapped applications via their MSI files. This works just fine... apps are installed silently in the background (to shared folder C:\ThinApps) and are available for all users.

All users are regular domain users, i.e. they don't have any administrative or power user rights.

Our problem occours when we deploy an update. This is done by putting the update thinapps on a file share, and having the corresponding AppSyncURL in the packages.

Upon launch it creates the .ASL file (which I presume is the file to see when it last checked for an update) and begins to download an .ASE (which I guess is the new .EXE).

However, since they are regular users ThinApp seems to not be able to replace the original .EXE and we are left with a duplicate .1 file. Which means redundant data storage...

Any way to fix this?

Another issue... if an administrator happens to start an app on these machines the admin created .ASE is unavailable to users, meaning they'll never check for updates(?). Additionally, when run as an admin the files won't be renamed to either .EXE or .1, just leaving the .ASE there.

Any fix to this apart from manually resetting file security information and making any user able to delete any application?

ThinAPP vs InstallFree
Has anyone tried InstallFree? We are a ThinAPP shop for now, but it is becoming a pain in neck to work with Vmware's incompetent customer support and their non-disclosure policies. Anyway, we had a demo of InstallFree and it definitely has some cool features that ThinAPP is lacking - complete shell integration, easy process to upgrade packages (ThinAPP has one too but it never worked for us), no clean machine required to capture your packages and light-weight application provisioning tool that integrates very well with AD. They said they are releasing 64-bit support in January and I think it will be a serious competitor for ThinAPP. We will give it a serious consideration to make a switch when they have the 64-bit support.

If anyone of you have used InstallFree, can you share your experiences?

Hello,
I have 2 questions.

1) When I create a package i am getting 2 files- one with .dat extension and another with .exe extension.
I would like to have just one package with .exe entension ( I have seen demos with 800mb single exe file thinapp package)

2) I created a thinapp package (followed Thinapp guide) . The problem is, when i launch the package within an administrator account, it takes 3 minutes to launch. In a non administrator account it takes 20 sec to launch. ( The application package requires don net 1.1 and 2). I have tried packaging dont net and applications in different thin app pacages and app linking, but with the same result.

Outlook 2003 with Customization for Profile Autoconfigure
I'm fairly new to ThinApp and I am ThinApping Office 2003 right now.

General packaging went really well but I'm trying to make my package a little more useful by configuring Outlook to autoconfigure the user profile.

I installed Office 2003 with a transform that specifies the profile generation behavior.

After packaging and running outlook, Outlook tries to connect to the target exchange server and prompts for credentials. It doesn't accept any of the credentials provided and errors out.

The machine is on the correct domain and a valid user is logged in.

Any advice would be appreciated.

copy directory-structure from virtual-filesystem to host-filesystem
Hello,

I found post with a simoilar problem in post 'http://communities.vmware.com/thread/217891'.

Background:
I have to copy a directory with Its sub folders from the virtual filessystem to hosts file system.
I use the cmd-debug commandline and I give the target folder attribut 'merged':

Problem:
I call 'copy', 'mkdir' in the thin-bubble, both will work fine to copy files into host system, or create folders.
But if i try to use 'xcopy', this command break and give the message 'can't create the target folder'.
It's very strange, because the other to commandline tools will work.

Can anybody give an idea, why 'xcopy' won't work in thinapp-bubbles ?

Thank you in advanced

Hey everyone.

Today a user discoverd a very weird problem with Word 2003 SP3 in that users cannot save documents to a UNC Path. I have confirmed it is a problem with ThinApp as I installed a local version of Office 2003 SP3 on the VM. Any ideas? It is throwing that Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error. Any ideas?

Antivirus and Thinapp

Hello,

I am evaluating Thinapp and am concerned about AV integration with the product. Is it possible for a desktop machine running the Thinapp streamed appliation to scan the application for viruses. Eg, I have packaged Winrar and replaced the Console RAR Manual text file (RAR.txt) with the eicar.txt file. If I open the file RAR.txt file (which is now actually the contecnts of the eicar.txt file) the AV on my desktop does not detect it. It is only when I try and save that file to the computer that the AV detects the eicar virus and acts upon it. Is it possible for the AV to detect viruses which are contained in streamed packages?

Thanks,
Separate the app from the OS, without ThinApp.
Hi everybody

This is just a theoretical question: Is it possible in Windows environment to separate the application from the OS? To deploy a complex app without installation, using a fake registry file or something like that. Something like what ThinApp can do, but I don't want to involve any 3rd party software.

Fails to build correct .MSI of Adobe CS3 Design Premium
I've been struggling with building thinapps off our Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium software... I really wanted to seperate each component into smaller thinapps - but Adobe is being a complete ass .

Anyways, I wound up essentially installing all the apps in one go... which resulted in a .DAT of about 1.3gigs (compressed). However, the .MSI was only 18mb which seemed totally wrong, and sure enough it doesn't work.

I've tried to re-run the build.bat and it runs just fine and exits with no errors... but still the flawed .MSI.

Seeing as we need these .MSI's to properly distribute software through our MS System Center I'm kind of at a loss now... anyone got any ideas!?

(Using the official VMware 4.0.3 release) ... Thanks in advance...

I know I used sbmerge correctly because changes I made to internet explorer which was also in the project worked.
Anyone have any ideas why Outlook can not be merged?

Virtual Registry isolation of registry keys
Maybe someone could explain me the value #2300 at the end of unicode keys ?

I figured out that every REG_SZ value string ended with 0hex,

what I didn't understand is the '23' ?

I go through VMWare ThinApp Users' Manual in chapter 'using the virtual registry' an tried to understand.

In ASCII Code 23hex means '#' but why should at the end of a unicoestring a '#'

Thanks a lot, I walk throug a dark wood since two day and cannot figure out what #23 will mean
thinapp post install point
Hi,

I've recently been attempting to thinapp an application that requires a reboot. I am doing this on a VMware workstation set to non persistent mode (meaning system changes are maintained during a restart). However, When i restart and login to the workstation, thinapp relaunches not at the post install point but at the beingging when the packager is first invoked. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Virtual Bubble with Internet Explorer - Flash Causes it to Freeze

Hello everyone.

I know this is a constant topic about how to correctly get a ThinApped package to interact with the Local installation of IE. I am having a problem with Flash, which is installed locally, when launching the IE in the ThinApp package. Any flash enabled website causes Internet Explorer to freeze.

I am not sure what to do.

The Machine which was used has IE 7 already, which is the same version on the target machine. Adobe 10 is installed on the target machine, flash works in the local IE.
Do I need to isolate some keys in the package? Should I just ThinApp Flash?

I should also say in the whole process of this, I also captured an installation of IE 7 from IE 6, along with Office 2007, and Flash works from the locally installed machine. I am not sure what the difference is. I guess I could also compare the registry keys between both projects, but that could take some time.

Thanks. I hope someone has some ideas.

Visual Basic 6 with 4.0.3: VB's add-in's won't load
Hi,

I'm pretty new to ThinApp, but have managed to ThinApp a good few "simple" applications so far. Now I'm trying to ThinApp Visual Basic 6 (I know: it's old, but I still have good use for it) but I've run into a problem there: creating the ThinApp'ed application goes well (with 4.0.3), but when I try to run it, it fails to load all VB's add-in components (OCX and DLL). Can someone help me out here to get this fixed?

Thanks,

Marco
Problems virtualising SolidWorks 2009
Hello,

We've got a problem virtualising SolidWorks (premium) 2009 SP 4.1 icluding SolidCam 2009 SP1.

The capture has been tried on a clean Win XP SP3 PC, a clean Win XP SP2 VM and a clean Vista VM with thinapp version 4..0.3. Same result on both VM's. All the prerequisites (.net 3.0 etc.) are in the package.

After building the app all entrypoints seem to work fine except the most important one, SolidWorks. I've tried creating different entrypoints, starting everything wthin the bubble from a command box, starting and stopping services manually but no mather what I try SolidWorks doesn't start and no error messages are shown. Also during capturing I tried different things; with and without starting SW during the capture and starting and stopping services during the capture. All this in different combinations, always with the same result: SolidWorks doesn't start, no error messages are shown.

We virtualised hundreds of apps here at Saxion and the Previous version of SolidWorks (2008) worked fine.

Does anyone recognise this problem? Can anyone help us out?

Thanks,
Podium Podcasting and encoding Audio Files
A thinapped Podium install generates an error when a user attempts to encode a file to MP3 or WAV format. Podium installs along with it oggcodecs_0.73.1936.exe and uses it for the encoding. Both software packages are in the capture. (I've also tried each seperate and linking them with the same results.) I don't get the error when running the "installed" software, only the Thinapped version. I've tried all isolation modes, and ran a new capture which incuded the native install starting up and encoding a file in case there were registery entries made on the first run. So far, nothign has made a difference. The error, according to Podium support, is due to the OggCodec package not being installed, or not installed correctly, and Podium not seeing it. Anyone have any ideas on why the oggcodec package wouldn't work in a thinapp?

ThinApp and Printing
I have packaged my application (in this case a business app. running under IE6) on a 'clean' Windows 2000 pc.

I am now wanting to host this ThinApp package on a XenApp Server (which has no connected printers).

What I want to happen is for the client who connects to the XenApp Server and accesses the ThinApp package to be able to print using those printers that are known on his / her client PC - but in the print dialog no printers are displayed ( As there are none installed on the server). Is there a way to get the ThinApp package in the XenApp environment to be able to print using the printers known to the client?

Many Thanks
Shortcuts in Quick Launch taskbar?
Both our Firefox and Thunderbird ThinApps try to add a shortcut to the XP quicklaunch taskbar. I say try because they kind of fail...

Looking at this;

Shortcuts=%Desktop%;%Programs%\Mozilla Thunderbird;%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

This creates an Icon on the Desktop and on the start menu... but no icon on the quick launch... or rather;

It does create the icon in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

instead of in the "users"... maybe VMware thought All Users Quick Launch worked the same way as Al Users Desktop and Start Menu? (I.e. icons put there are shared between all users...?) Well, it's not on our systems.

Thinking about it - it would probably be a pain to fix then as each user would have to have a check for the icon each time they logged on... :-/

Sql Server

I am working to virtualize sql server 2005 in order to support a virtual application that makes use of it but I am encountering some difficulties.

When I start Sql Server management studio and authenticate using Sql Server Authentication I recieve the following error.

“A network-related or instance-specific error occurred whileestablishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found orwas not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and thatSQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQLNetwork Interfaces, error: 26 – Error Locating Server/InstanceSpecified) ”

I have attached a graphic of the origional error message.

I am using the following script gleaned from the forums to force to the sandbox all of the databases within the package as suggested in other posts.

'SQL Force to sandbox script
Set Ts = f.OpenAsTextStream(ForAppending)
ForceToSandbox("%ProgramFilesDir%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\templog.ldf")
End Function

Additionally, I am following the portion of the step by step guide:

Change the folder isolation level for "%AppData%\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA" from FULL to MERGED by editing the ##Attributes.ini file in that directory and changing "DirectoryIsolationMode=Full" to "DirectoryIsolationMode=Merged".

Though I am making the change in %Common AppData%\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA because the folder path doesn't exist in %AppData%.

My Sql Server settings:

named instance: ML

Use the built in System Account: Local System

Authentication mode: Mixed Mode Authentication

Any advice for rectifying this issue is appreciated.

Help with Thinapp
I have created a thinapp of a program called Cenrtricity EMR. After the creation the original install works but the thinapp hangs as soon as it starts. I have created a log of the thinapp starting. The log shows it is trying to run a program called ML.EXE and hangs right there. The log file is 45 mb so I can't post it. But I do have it available for download here:

http://www.4shared.com/file/127590471/268e70ef/MLEXE01ca21fbdb6a11b0-5c4.html

If you can take a look I'd appreciate it. I have no clue what ML is doing.

ThinApp Consumes All Memory
Hey everyone.

I have ThinApped Office 2007 with IE 7 and Adobe Reader. When launch IE7 and create 4 tabs, open up Word 2007 and have 2 documents open, open up an excel document and one pdf document, I consume almost all memory and my page file. I even start to get memory errors in IE 7 if I open up another tab.

Why is ThinApp using almost all of the memory? This presents an issue on VDI, as the machine only has 768 MB of RAM. It just seems like this is not right, that I did something wrong. Any ideas? Suggestions?

IE 8, .NET Framework
Hi to All,

I have been working on ThinApp'ing IE 8 and using .NET Framwork 3.5 as a plugin. .NET is only a .dat file in the plugin folder of IE 8, does there need to be an exe that uses the .dat file in the plug in folder? The Builder Wizard didn't pick an appropriate exe as an entry point, so I just left all unchecked and gav e it a name to use for the .DAT.....is there a particular exe that I should use as an entry point?

When I go to the page for the application, click on the Install button, a message displays that says >NET Setup Is Currently Disabled By Your Security Settings.

Thank you for any suggestions or help.

Office 2007 with IE - Crashes with Local Addon
Hey everyone.

I ThinApped Office 2007 and I put the iexplore.exe entry point in with the project as I need users to have the Office Settings in IE to open up Infopath documents in Sharepoint. When I did the catpure, I had IE 7 installed already as that is what we have deployed on the machines. The problem is that when you launch iexplore.exe on a VMWare View machine, it crashes on any site that has adobe flash. I was able to figure out that it is the VMWare Adobe Plugin, flashoptimizer.dll. When I disable this addon and launch the program, IE does not close.

What do I do in order to troubleshoot this/resolve it? I am somewaht new to ThinApp and this Local program launching in the Virtual Bubble still has me somewhat confused. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

ThinApping Corel Draw X4 | hide local folders

Hey guys!

Following: I'am working on a CorelDraw X4 ThinApp at the moment.
Packaging Process worked well.(Used a clean VM, newest ThinApp realease: 4.0.3-3313)
Now the Problem. If I want to use the Thinapp on a computer with MS Office 2003 installed, it tries to install something (process msi.exe starts, and you can see Office install assistant starting. but its not possible for the installer to install the required stuff) and then the application crashes.

I already tried installing this office on the virtual machine before packaging corel. but no effect...
I can only use the Isolation modes writecopy and merged. if thinapp it full, it wouldn't be possible to use other interfaces to existing applications..

I know that it is possible to hide local files from the thinapp (http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2009/02/how-to-ignore-local-system-files-and-registry-entries-inside-a-thinapp-package.html)
but is it also possible to hide local folders from the thinapp? It's a bit more comfortable to hide single folders with the files included than every single file...

btw.. if you try using this thinapp on a machine without office installed, it is working perfectly (in addition Office as a thinapp works, but we have many applications with Macros and other installed interfaces to office i could not thinapp yet.
Thinapp & WMI
hey all,

having some issues with wmi. I've tried capturing two apps that utilize wmi (sql 2005 express being one of them) and neither work with it. When I start the SQL manager I get an invalid namespace error. When I run wbemtest I can't locate the namespace manually (I can on the machine that I installed sql natively). Unfortunately i'm no guru on the technical aspects of wmi/com.

Also, I've tried launching the app through the stand alone exe and with the msi installer and changing the virtualizeexternaloutofprocescom option in the package.ini file but haven't had success.

Any ideas?

Virtualizing an Application

I am trying to use VMWare ThinApp instead of Citrix XenApp for an install of NextGen software. My ultimate goal is to publish the virtualized app to the web so users can log in and access applications based on permissions or apps pushed to their profile (like Citrix Presentation Server but using VMWare products instead). I have tried to install ThinApp on a clean XP Pro box and capture the software install that I need virtualized. I then took that completed build and tried to distribute it to other machines on my domain so they could use the virtualized app.....but I get errors saying it can't access the DB. However I feel like I am missing some crucial steps in the process to obtain my ultimate goal. Can anyone offer any assistance with the steps I might be missing to make this happen or correct me on mistakes I have made?

Hello, I am attempting to Thinapp Eclipse Galileo for Java Developers and I'm running into a bit of trouble. I get the following error regardless if the JDK is in installed into the client, packaged with eclipse or applinked to it:

The Eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library.
This error appears immediately at execution of the application.
How do I troubleshoot ThinApp package when it crashes under LogMonitor?

The Problem :
I am trying to troubleshoot a ThinApp application package. The package has required links to Crystal Runtime 2008 SP1 and .NET Framework versions 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 SP1. The package runs successfully on a Windows XP SP2 machine, but on a Windows Vista SP1 machine, it crashes when trying to show a Crystal report in the viewer. The package was built with ThinApp 4.0.3.

My Troubleshooting Steps :
I copied the LogMonitor.exe and supporting dll's to a Windows Vista SP1 test client. When I started the application package, the log file becomes so large that the application failed to launch. I then checked the Suspend box in LogMonitor, and now when I launch the application package, it crashes immediately.

Some Relevant Notes :
I had built roughly the same package with ThinApp 4.0.1 trialware and did not run into this issue. The app packaged under 4.0.1 ran successfully under Windows XP and Vista machines. In both cases, I had built all packages on a VM Workstation running Windows XP SP2.

My Question :
How do I troubleshoot this?

Hello. I am testing out thinapp to see if it could work for my clients. The one program that will sell it for me is office. I have thinapped office xp and 2003 with all service packs fine. Except when I add the compatibly pack for office. It changes all the icons and the msi when it installs leaves PowerPoint without an Icon.

I have followed the guide on the thinapp blog to install and configure office that works fine. But after the compatibility pack all icons are different looking and when you right click and properties on the office documents it says opening with xml converter. It still opens fine but that seems weird.

SAS 9.2 very slow to start when packaged
I have SAS 9.2 packaged with no compression and WriteCopy isolation, and it takes quite a long time to start when packaged with ThinApp. I'm not even running it off a network volume, just off the local hard drive.

If I launch the application as installed normally, it opens very quickly.

The delay occurs after the VMware logo box pops up in the lower right hand corner. There is about a 60-90 second delay before the SAS splash screen comes up. Running this off a network volume multiplies the delay substantially.

I do not see anything obvious in the trace files. Any suggestions?

"Thinapped" application for Windows XP and Vista
Hi Everybody,

I've already "thinapped" different kind of software. If I run application on the same OS, but not the with the same SP (the computer that I use for thinapp don't have SP), the software works fine.

If I test to run the application on Windows Vista, (or Seven), when I start the application, the error at the application startup appear "the application has stopped working".

When I create the package, I choose the Merged Isolation Mode. I'd know if somebody know more about the procedure for create an application compatible with two or more Windows OS versions.

Thank you for your help.
Externalizing AppSync URL?

In our deployment model, we build ThinApp packages at our company and then deploy them out to different servers at customer intranet sites. We have been able to leverage the ThinApp scripting capability to externalize basically any file in the package. This allows us to build 1 core package, deploy it at multiple customer sites, and then just change any .config files outside of the package for each customer. This greatly simplifies the management of our packages, since we just need to build one version of the package and then can configure it per customer via configuration files.

We have been experimenting with the AppSync capability, and have found that it would be especially useful to externalize the AppSync URL in much the same way we can with our configuration files. This would open many doors for us in terms of flexible deployments. Namely, we could create a package at our company, test it internally by pointing to a local web server, then stage that package out to a customer site, and just update the AppSync URL to point to their customer web server. Another common scenario is that we will deploy a ThinApp package into a customer test environment, and then need to push the same package into the customer's live environment. We would like to be able to move the package from the test web server to the live web server, and just update the AppSync URL in the live environment to point to the live web server.

Is it possible to do this today with ThinApp? If this needs to be a feature request, where do I post it?

ThinApp Firefox slow respons
Im new to ThinApp, and looked at the Introvideo on Youtube to create Mozilla Firefox. I've got a clean PC, Instlaaed TinApp software, started the precapture, Installed Mozilla3.x and Finished the capture.

Here I did choose for a portable application.

The first thing I noticed that I.ve got a .exe aswell a .dat file, while the help and forums states thatunder the 200Mb you wilend with just an .exe file. Total size is about 14Mb.

Now when I run the application straight from the BIN-directory it works allright. The Snasbox is created in teh bin-directory, because the sandboxpath=. in teh package.ini file. When I browse the internet it works OK, a bit slower the straight Mozilla, but that was expected and more than suitable.

Now when I copy the bi-directory to an USBthe package still works ok, bt browsing the internet is incredible slow. Looking at the USB you can see that there is a lot of I/O going on. But the browsing speed is so slow that I would not satisfy my clients.

Has anyone an idea what is going on?

Package downloads update but won't "apply" it

I've ThinApp'd Office Enterprise 2007. This resulted in one big .DAT and some entry point .EXE's. In the appsync portion of the package.ini I set the URI too look for updates at http://webserver/Office.exe ...

Then I made an update to the Office Enterprise 2007 package, built it in the same way, and copied the new Office2007.dat to the webserver as Office2007.exe.

Now, when I run one of the entry .EXE's (like Word) it tells me it's downloading an update, and when it's at 100% I see the "hidden" Office2007.ase file (which is the new Office2007.exe).

However, next time I start Word it doesn't "apply" this new .ase, but insteads tells me again it needs to download an update. And it does... with the same result.

Both packages use the same containers etc. (the new one is actually a copy of the first project with some files added to it).

Any ideas? Using AppSync with say FireFox has worked just fine for me so far...

Office 2007 Enterprise SP2 not transportable on all machine

Hey all,

I have try to thinapping Office 2007 Enterprise edition with the SP2 (with Volume Licence). But on some machine, it works, and other no.

I don't know why.

Thinapp machine : XP Pro SP3

Capture machine : XP Pro SP3

test machine :

* XP Pro SP3 without Office 2003 => yes and no (3 yes and 1 no)

* XP Pro SP3 with Office 2003 => yes and no (1 yes and 2 no)

* Win 2003 Srv Std ed without Office 2003 => yes

I test with 2 version. the first is with the MSOCache, and the second without the MSOCache.

On machines where it doesn't work, with the MSOCache, an install dialogue box appear and disappear except for Word. I need to minimize Word and maximizing to work.

And with the version without MSOCache, I have the same probleme, but the dialogue box ask me where is the file "EnterpriseWW.msi" in %drive_C%\MSOCache\All Users{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}-C.

For other machines, when I launch an Office application, I haven't this dialog box in start.

I have follow the How To Thinapp for Office 2007.

And I have added a script for timeout (all machine are the right date and the timeout ended in one year) and a group policy (I have try with the same account and differents accounts of the group, the result doesn't change)

I have check the version of Framework, it's same on all machine.

I have check the version of windows installer, it's the same on all machine.

I have check if the MSOCache is in some machine, but it is on any machine

And I haven't other idea.

I want to deploy this solution on my network, but I do not want this dialog box at startup. and I would like to use the version without the MSOCache. and I do not want to minimize Word for it works.

Have you an idea for resolv my problem?? Because if I deploy one of these two versions, end users do not use because it is not practical.

Thx

Control over plug ins files/registry overwriting main package files/regitry

CLIENT O/S: N/A

GUEST O/S: N/A

SEVERITY: Low, NIce to have this option in Package.ini

BRIEF SUMMARY: Control over plug ins files/registry overwrite main package files/regitry

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

I'd like to see a control when adding plug ins to the main package. By default plug ins files/registry keys will take precedence over main package. Sometime this is not very convenient.

Let's say you have Oracle client as plug in. If such control would exists you could drop generic Oracle client as plug in and then add customized files into main package file system. For example TNSNAMES.ORA.

Since today plug in FS will overwrite main package meaning specific application package TNSNAMES.ORA file will make no effect and generic TNSNAMES.ORA will take precedence.
Some questions about network sharing and AppSynURL

Hi,

I'm trying to deploy a ThinApp over the network, to perform:

I created a share on a server and name it 'content'

I re-build the application and the application update after

I changed the AppSyncURL = file:////myserveur/content/app.exe,

the Primary Container name app.exe

all Shortcut=app.exe

I know that I need thinreg.exe to deploy the first version of my app but

What I need to copy on my share, only the app.exe? all the package? or just the folder 'bin'?

To upgrade my app, I just need to copy the app.exe of my "up-package"?

What the primary container contain exactly? just some registries and folders present in the package?

Thanks,
how to maintain the thin app environment

Hello
My company start the deploy the thinapp and we package many applications like office, acrobat, sap and so on. I know vmware provide many tools to maintain the apps ,such as appsync, applinks. But I have many problem to maintain the whole thin environment
1. VMware recommend us to package every application in the "Clean" environment. Actuality, many applications interrelate each other. For example, IE browser. many our applications plug-in IE, If we package every application in "Clean" OS. the user may use different browser to run different app. and the standard IE can only browse the web, and always could not run plug-in apps.
2. To solve the first problem, we can simulate users environment to install all applications in the same OS, and finally re-package the IE with app link option. But this method will make the environment more complex and hard to maintain. Because a application change or update will impact other applications.
3. About update the application with app link option. A Scenario, I have packaged a Lotus notes called notes.dat and deploied to users in a month. now I want to config some setting. I have two way to update. First, capture the configurations and build a package called configuration.dat, then config the notes_v1's requireapplins to link to the configuration.dat in the package.ini, and rebuild the notes.dat. It's that right, I really didn't sure the two notes.dat are different package and use the same sandbox, it works? The second way, because of the config never change the execute file, there is no entry point to run the configuration.dat. So, we copy a same execute file of the notes as the entry point, and package the configuration.dat to link the notes.dat.
how to maintain the thin app environment

ThinApp and Kernel Drivers
I tried to virtualize an app that relies on a kernel driver to access a USB device that contains license information, Needless to say it won't work. Does anyone know of a work around is available for this kind of situation? We are not trying to and don't want to bypass any license requirements.

Thank you,
Must isolate thinapp from OS to prevent Outlook conflict

I am trying to thinapp EAM which is a purchase requisition software that ties into our ERP software called QAD. It has it's own built in mail program that appears to be Outlook 2000 to let users know when their reqs have been approved, etc. The application runs great after being thin apped however, any user who's workstation has Outlook installed locally can not use the built in Mail client of EAM because it appears to be conflicting. I get a bunch of DLL errors when it tries to bring the mail part up in EAM. I have tried write copy and merged isolation modes. I tried doing Full by modifying the Package.ini file at the root of the capture directory and that did not seem to work. I found the folder where I think the mail program lives in the caputure and modified the package/attribute files there also. Any thoughts? How do you truely do full isolation mode as I didn't find the documentation / KB articles that helpful. If Full isolation won't help, please advise what you think I can do. Thanks!

MS Access 2003
Hello,

Like everyone else, I am looking for a little help.

Using all the standard practices I have been able to package MS Access 2003 seemlessly on a clean XP machine and all features within Access function. Specifically I am talking about the new database wizards. I am able go through all the wizards and everything works great. Unfortunately, when I run the same package on a Vista machine the new database wizards file to work correctly. I end up with several very non-descrip errors about failing to a load a dll.

I have since tried to package MS Access 2003 on a clean Vista build and ran across the same results. I have tried to use log monitor and its "looks" like a .dll in the wrong spot problem. Has anyone had any success getting Ms Access 2003 to work on a Vista machine.

Some simple specs:

Thinapp build 3313

Clean XP and Vista

Thanks

taskkill.exe in thinapp package.
We have a thinapp package that needs to clear the sandbox when the program exits. However when the remove sandbox on exit option is selected the process for the thinapp package hanges. The following bat file and vbs script were added to the package to remove certain registry keys and to kill the process if it was still running. However sometimes when the program exits the taskkill.exe crashes with an application error. This application was packaged using thinstall 3.300, for some reason using any newer version causes issues with a report viewer built into the application.

start.vbs

Function OnFirstParentExit

set objShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
objShell.Run("c:\esp367\init.cmd")

End Function

init.cmd

@echo off
title Clearing data..
C:\ESP367\reg.exe add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Kronos\ESP\Settings" /v "Report Directory" /f /d "\\MOE\ESPreporting"
C:\ESP367\reg.exe delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Kronos\ESP\Settings" /v "Last User" /f >nul 2> nul
C:\ESP367\taskkill.EXE /F /IM "Workforce ESP 3.6.7 (Test).exe"
:_end
goto :EOF

Im not really sure what to try.

I did not create the package or the the script but it's fallen to me to fix it.
thinapp'ing office 2007 - problems
I have been trying to thinapp the whole of office 2007 (including project, visio in the same bubble) with writecopy isolation mode. However when I try and insert a visio object into word I get an Invalid embedded object error.

I followed the step written on the blog on thinapp'ing office 2007

I am using thinapp version 4.0.3 on a clean vista build

It needs to be in writecopy and not merged mode (I know that merged works)

Any ideas?

Using VBScript to Provide Startup Options
I am attempting to use VBS files to provide some level of customization to a packaged ThinApp. The first VBS copies a file from a Sandbox Subdirectory to a folder on %drive_C%. The problem is that this file only works if there are no spaces in the TS_ORIGIN path. What can I do to alleviate this issue other than tell all users that the ThinApp must be run from a path with no spaces?

--- CONTENTS ---

Function OnFirstParentStart
Origin = GetEnvironmentVariable("TS_ORIGIN")
LastSlash = InStrRev(Origin, "\")
SourcePath = Left(Origin, LastSlash)
SourcePath = SourcePath + "Settings\"

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.filesystemObject")

SourceFile = SourcePath + "FILE.EXT"
DestDir = ExpandPath("%DRIVE_C%\TEST")

If objFSO.FileExists(SourceFile) Then
objFSO.CopyFile SourceFile, DestFile, TRUE
End if

End Function

END CONTENTS ---

The second VBS reads a path from a text file and uses it to rebuild a shortcut within the ThinApp. I am attempting this because the ThinApp is going to be used to deploy the runtime executables but the forms & reports (this is legacy Oracle application) can be stored in different places. I want to use the text file to allow different deployments to store the forms in different locations without having to rebuild the ThinApp package. The VBS script developed does work when run as stand-alone (and removed ThinApp-specific function calls) but it does not work after building into my ThinApp package.

Start off from a saved initial snapshot using the Setup Capture wizard?

Is there a way to do this? You can save the initial snapshot of the system onto a file using snapshot.exe utility but can you start off from that snapshot using the Setup Capture wizard?

Is it possible to create a virtual image for deploying a web application(this should include Tomcat as well as the deployed war file) ? Can I use VMware thinApp for this purpose?

Question on ChildProcessEnvironmentDefault
I have a build of Firefox with this option enabled and when I click on a link that goes to a Word doc, it asks me whether I want to open it in Word or not. When I chose to have Word open it, I can see that the document does get saved to the temp folder (not in the sandbox as I have this folder set to merged) then the MS Installer runs and fails and Word never starts up to open the document. If I have Word running already, same problem. I do have Office installed on the worsktation.

Anybody suggest what I'm doing wrong?
