Anyone going 10G with VMware outside of a Nexus platform...?
Hello All,

I am curious if anyone has any comments around designing or implementing a full 10G (ESX & SAN) or Hybrid (10G servers & multiple 1G SAN) on something other than Cisco Nexus. My experiences so far with 10G implementations on Nexus has been fantastic, but not everyone is a Cisco shop. When I saw the writting on the wall for the 10G tipping point in pricing in late 2008/ealry 2009 I didn't think Cisco would be as competative as it has been on pricing. I think that pricing has kept many people designing around it, because outside of some lower 48 projects I just haven't heard of anyone implementing much on anything else. I like to hear about other options considering how important the network is for a VM project.

Cheers,

Kurt
ESX4i iSCSI LUN MAPPING

Would like to review the software iSCSI initiator to iSCSI target LUN mapping. I have been testing with OpenFiler and OpenSolaris ZFS strorage arrays. "LUN Thrashing" is a IO killer and can easily happen if the targets are not statically mapped on the ESX hosts.
Dear VMUG Leaders:

EMC is very interested in sponsoring an upcoming VMUG and I wanted to see if you had a need or availability for a sponsorship and speaker. EMC and VMware made some exciting announcement around vSphere and other solutions for the private cloud and the virtualized data center and we are currently talking to may customers and VMUGs about the recent VMworld announcements. Below is an abstract we just delivered in Seattle at the VMUG and we can also cover topics such as DeDupe for Vmware and cover some new solutions with the addition of Data Domain.

Please let me know if you would be interested in having EMC host and sponsor an upcoming event. Best Regards,

*_EMC ABSTRACT_</strongEMC will be giving a technical overview of vStorage Infrastructure Services in vSphere and their impact on the datacenter, including VAAI (vStorage APIs for Array Integration). In addition, we will discuss how VMware technologies are redefining the relationship between storage and system administration. Lastly EMC will cover any new EMC solutions announced at VMworld that customers can leverage for their VMware environments.</p>
EMC Offer to Sponsor a VMUG

Hello - My name is Don LaMure and I have recently started my own consulting company and have been selling professional services for many years. Essentially all of my past clients are using VMware. As I would like to offer them consulting in these areas, I feel a VMUG meeting could be very beneficial. I'm currently the co-founder of the Silicon Valley SharePoint User Group and now have over 100 members on our LinkedIn Group and normally 50+ attendees to our once a month meetings.

If anyone is interested in working with me on getting this started, please call me at 408-393-6205 or email chessconsult@yahoo.com

Thank you in advance.

I attended this show last year, and really came away with a lot of good info. The cost is free, so if you can take a day away from the office, I highly recommend it. There are quite a few tracks to attend. You won't have any problems filling your day with sessions. They'll post more info about the sessions as the date comes closer, you can look at the other cities to get a decent idea of what to expect.
I've never used VMWare but plan to download VMware Esxi 3.5 and want to know if anyone uses it to bring forensic images, such as e01 or dd into the virtual environment. If so have you have any luck in doing so, or I'm I trying to use a product that will not work. Thank you in advance
How would you set up Outlook (w/ VMware?) on a MacBook Pro so it would do *mailmerge with Salesforce*?

Can that be done smoothly?

I don't have VMware or Outlook yet but I assume I may need VMware to run Outlook at this time? I'm running OS 10.5.8.

I use Firefox, and Safari (for different things), as well as gmail and MAIL. SalesForce seems adamant about using Outlook.

Has anyone come up with a way to manage or view your snapshots other than right clicking on the server and selecting snapshot manager?

It would be nice to have a tool or view that shows you all your active snapshots to better. What do you guys do?
Receiving error when attempting to import .ovf file using ovftool 1.0

We have recently installed ESXi 3.5 and I have been converting our old .vmx files to .ovf using the OVFtool 1.0. When I attempt to import the file using the command line, I receive an error stating that the "Host is disconnected or in maintenance mode." Neither of which is true. I have put the system in maintenance mode and took it back out and still received the same error. When I attempted to use the VIC to import the .ovf file, I received an XML Envelope error. I researched the error and it stated that since I am using OVFTool 1.0 versus 0.9, I would have to use the command line to import the file. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Boise VMUG Members admission to Interface 2009

Hello all,

After attending last years Interface conference in Boise, I was asked to become a member of it's advisory council. Upon becoming a member, they notified me to extend an invitation to any and all of the user groups that I am a member of. So all VMUG Boise members are extended a formal invitation and allowed complimentary registration to this event.

I know what some of you are thinking....."Great, another card spammer event." While that is somewhat true, some of the presentations I sat through were very informative and worth while. Plus, the food and the schwag giveaways are really good too.

For those of you unfamiliar with Interface, you can read more about it here: INTERFACE Home Page

This event will take place on August 13th from 9:30a – 4:00pm at the Boise Centre on The Grove

You must complete the registration before attending else you will not be allowed to enter. To register simply go here: (INTERFACE registration) and select "Advisory Council Referal" under "How did you hear about INTERFACE?"

I was also asked to inform you of some of the ways that INTERFACE can benefit you as a member of the VMUG:

For all
chapter members, their staff & chapter associates

Public Exposure

Did Academic pricing get setup?
Is there any sort of community support group yet?
Strictly anonymous customer feedback on storage vendor?

Hello,

We're in negotiations with 3par to provide disks behind a netapp gateway. Among other things this will be the storage behind several VMWare farms.

We're already a netapp shop but are new to 3par. I'm hoping to get candid feedback on 3par from a shop that's familiar with them, from outside of their list of "friendly" references. Ideally I'd like to set up a conference call between you and a few representatives of our storage team. We'd like to ask you about the gear, you experience with it, and especially the vendor's support organization and your experiences with them. If you're not up for a scheduled conference call, I'd also be grateful to swap emails or talk one-to-one on the phone.

Your help with this will not get back to 3par. For example, I am posting this from a new VMUG account. No information you provide will be relayed back to 3par. Nothing identifying you will ever be inluded in any written correspondence.

Feel free to contact me at this username at gmail.com. Also feel free to forward this to anyone you know who has experience with 3par.

Hope to hear from you...

November 2009 PDX VMWare User's Conference - Call for Presentations
The steering commitee for the Portland VMUG is interested in holding an all day User's Conference in November 2009. We'll still hold the August VMUG as normal, but we want to offer an expanded curriculum with additional opportunities for VMWare users to present their experiences. We'll most likely have plenty of speakers from VMWare and VMWare partners, but we truly want to encourage VMWare end users to give presentations. If you are excited about VMWare, use it in your environment, and would like to share with others the technical, political, or social experiences you've had with any of the VMWare products, we'd love to here from you!

We are now accepting submissions for presentation topics for the November PDX VMWare User's Conference. We are hoping to provide all end-user speakers with a small stipend or gift for their participation. This is your chance to share your experiences with your peers in the Portland technical community and develop your network of technical contacts. If you are interested in presenting, please e-mail me at
Looking for a VMWare Guru in Portland
Am trying to network to find a VMWare/Virtualization Guru in Portland
for my client. They are an IT solutions company that specializes in
data center virtualization, managed services and unified
communications. They are growing their virtualization practice in
Portland and need a VMWare VCP 3.x to lead it locally. Person would be
50% client facing/50% architecting solutions for clients. Great
opporutnity with good salary + benes. From a VMWare standpoint, they
have some of the nation's top talent...who literally wrote books on
virtualization, so there is a great opportunity to learn and grow. Any
ideas for me?

Error: No Boot Device Found

Last night we had a production FTP server reboot, I am at a loss as to why it rebooted since Windows doesn't say anything, VIC doesnt tell me anything and the SAN reported no errors. So while that is a problem, the bigger issue is that when the server rebooted it didn't make it past the BIOS giving the error message No Boot Device Found. You power off the VM, wait a second, power it back on and it comes up with no issues. This isn't the first time or the first server to get this error on a guest OS crash. I don't believe the physical server had an issue, otherwise all the guests would have rebooted or HA would have logged a move, and if the SAN had issues and we would have got an alert from the SAN monitoring software. Has anyone run into something like this before?

ESX 3.5 update 4. The guest is a 2003 Standard server, updates are set to download but not install, there were no snapshots, no CD attached and this was not a P2V server, we are using Serv-U as the FTP server software. All the logs basically point to the machine just rebooted out of the blue, Event logs, FTP logs and the VM logs.

batch esxtop to just collect disk data

Hello all,

I want to batch output of esxtop to a csv file and just collect disk related data for 24 hours. I went into esxtop and disabled all columns for CPU, MEM, and network in addition to only enabling the desired columns under disk. I saved the file to .esxtop310rc and ran the following command:

nohup esxtop -c .esxtop310rc -b -d 3 -n 28800 >/mnt/esxshare/esx1.csv

The files are huge and they still collect all the CPU, MEM and network data. Here is a copy of my .esxtop310rc file:

abcdefgh
abcdefghijklmno
AbcdEfgHIjklm
ABCdeFGhijk
ABCDEfgHIjk
abcdefghijklm
5d

Hello everyone,

I need some unbias feedback on NetApp storage. I work at Apollo Group and we have been using shared Hitachi SANs but they are seriously poor performers. We are planning to get a NetApp POC going and I need to get some pros/cons. We will be going with fiber not iSCSI. Does anyone have best practices for carving disk groups and LUN sizes? Please email me at my work email is joe.sanchez(at)apollogrp(dot)edu

Thanks,
While I appreciate the fun and structure of the VMUG, I am looking to beat brains with a few fellow geeks. Any of these type of get together would be after business hours, with little structure.
I look forward to seeing what others have racked their brains on. My current frustrations revolve around managed hosted environments, and the associated networking & backup tasks.
Portland VMUG: How you can help.

The Portland VMUG team is very interested in your participation. We've got a lot of work to do to make each meeting successful, and we'd like you're help if you've got either time or resources to donate. Below are a few ways that you can help us make the Portland VMUG one of the best in the nation.

1. Participate on the PDX VMUG "Core" Team. We meet physically once per quarter in order to set up the next meeting. These meetings are generally a few weeks after a VMUG meeting where we review the survey results from the previous meeting, and do some logistical planning for the next upcoming meeting. We're looking for individuals who can attend most of the meetings to help us guide how each event is planned.

2. Web Development. We own the pdxvmug.com domain name, but we lack the skills to set up a professional looking website that has integration with wordpress or blogger so we can update it easily. If you're a web developer and have some free time we'd like to talk to you.

Co-Location space located

Hosting Space. We're also looking for a few U of hosting space that we can use where we can host our own content. We promise not to be too bandwidth intensive. We're also thinking that we may be able to come up with a community lab which would allow our VMUG community access to some of the technologies they may not have access to at their own job which can be used to prepare presentations.

If you think you'd be interested in helping with any of these points, please contact me ( dominic@vmprofessional.com ). I'd love to talk to you.

Guidelines for posting in the Bay Area CA VMware User Group forum
We've had a lot of random posts in this forum so I thought I would post a general guideline.

The focus of this forum is the Bay Area geographic region. If you have a question about a particular product, post in the product area forums. Your post will get a lotmore visibility and far quicker response.

Thanks!
Can't print when host OS is running in Fusion 2
Hopefully this is the right place to post this.

I am using Fusion 2 on a Mac running 10.5.

If the host OS is running (windows 2000) I can't print on either the windows side or the Mac side.

As soon as I suspend Windows. I can print again on the Mac side.

I have Fusion set up to use the mac default printer.
We had over two hundred people register for the February VMUG and had well over 100 people for the three technology presentations. There were a ton of giveaways, free lunch, and some well done technical presentations on several aspects of virtualization. Thanks to all who attended and to the customer presenters who continue to make the events successful.
New to group and a question

Hi:
My name is John Brock. I work for Robert McNeel & Associates here is Seattle. We are the developers of Rhinoceros - NURBS modeling for Windows. Some of our users are running VMware Fusion on their Macs including myself. I am involved in technical support, product testing, and training. So far Fusion works pretty well. It runs much more smoothly than Parallels.

However I have run into a few minor problems. I reported the first within the 30-day support period and played email tag with "Ranjeet" in support. We went to the effort of building a test application for him that demonstrated the mouse cursor problem we discovered. After three tries, he reported he was able to duplicate the error but the status of the problem has disappeared into the dark abyss that is typical technical support.

I wanted to report another bug and found that I have to buy into some support program to even report defects in the product. That REALLY makes me angry. Why should I pay them so I can report problems in their software? What's that about? Crazy.

At any rate. I wanted to see if anyone else has seen this problem. I have installed Windows XP Pro (with all updates) in Fusion. When I use the Windows Explorer (file) to make a new folder, or to rename an existing folder, the list does not refresh unless I force a refresh with F5 or change out of, and back into the parent folder. Has anyone else seen this and is there a fix for it?

Sorry for the minor rant. I spend a great deal of time doing technical support for our application. We consider it a privilege that our customers are willing to call or email with questions and problems. We do not charge a maintenance fee like many developers do, including VMware.

File Storage

Can anyone tell me where data files are stored in VM Ware Fusion on the Mac? I'm trying to organize a sync between my desktop and laptop computers for the files I create while in Windows NT so I don't have to manually drag files over the network or recreate them when I go to work from one machine to another. The files I create in Windows NT might be stored in the "My Documents" folder while in Windows but in some cases, the files may be in a folder within the particular application folder so I'd like to be able to identify them accordingly. If need be, I can probably organize the files I create to all be kept in the "My Documents" folder. Are the files even individually identifiable on the Mac? I suppose worst case scenario is to have a sync program for Windows to Windows but I'd rather be able to identify there location in the Mac environment and have them updated between the two computers.

Thanks.

Fusion shutting down when USB plugged in..........
Hi,

I hope I'm in the right area here. First time looking for help with VMWare Fusion - it's been rock solid for well over a year.

Anyway, as of a couple weeks ago, every time I plug in the Garmin 405 usb stick I get the light gray screen telling me that I have to hold the power button down to completely shutdown my Macbook.

Up until then, I had been using this USB stick flawlessly.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance............and again, I apologize if this isn't the correct forum.
Windows 7 and Vista

I just loaded Windows 7 on a new virtual machine. I still want my primary machine to be Vista, but every time I open Fusion, it automatically boots to Windows 7. How do I tell Fusion which machine I want to default to?

Other information: The Windows 7 machine is an actual virtual machine while the the Vista machine is actually my boot camp partition.
Thanks in advance!

Slow boot up with VMware Fusion 2.0.1

I went from Fusion 1..... to 2.0.1 and had a 10-fold or more boot up time increase in the virtual machine Windows XP pro. It was seconds (maybe 10, never really counted), to minutes - 1.5 to 2 or more. Shut down is also much slower. I've seen the entries on slow boot ups in 2.0, and didn't find anything that seemed to help. The system is displaying a blue screen with "Welcome" on it for a very long time. In addition, the upgrade lost track of a number of files so I had to go and find them again in order to be able to run programs -- Password Safe, and Eudora in particular. Is there any solution for the slow boot up, or if not is there any way to get back to the 1... version without having to reload windows (XP Professional 2002, SV 2) and the applications? I am using an iMac, leopard OS.
Installing Fedora via VMware Player
Hi. My name is Walt. I'm new to Linux, and I've been following a guideline to creating a virtual OS (Fedora 9) via VMware. However, I am stuck at the partitioning, where it asks me to choose one of four choices:

Remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout

Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout

Use free space on selected drives and create default layout

Create Custom Layout

However, this isn't the problem. The real problem is that VMware isn't finding the hard drive to install Fedora 9 on. Underneath the four choices are two little black boxes, which I have no idea what they say. So, when I try to add a drive, it takes me to this "Advanced Storage Options" window where it asks me to "Add iSCSI target." When I try to do so, VMware tells me there's an error: "I must have a network configuration set up for iSCSI config. Please boot with 'linux asknetwork.'" I don't know how to add an iSCSI target, so please help! The specifications is that I am running VMware via Windows XP Home. Thanks in advance.

VMWare Fusion 2.0 will not open due to 'File Damaged' / Virtual Machine Library

It started with getting the message that 'VMWare Fusion has paused virtual machine because the disk on which the virtual machine is stored is almost full. To continue, free up at least 892 mb of disk space.'
With no additional instruction and unable to get it to do anything on the windows side , I left the windows side and began to look for space from the Mac side. I moved a number of files into the trash and then to my usb drive and thought I had kept track of them, just in case. The VMWare Fusion did open back up, and thinking I needed to take a snapshot, I removed my two older snapshots and then I got the same message. I again began to remove files from the Mac side both in Downloads and Library folder, I think.
Apparently I removed the wrong files and hope someone can help me recover the situation I am now in, with the Virtual Machine Library showing 'File Damaged' and apparently not offering any suggestions or options.
Thank you.

Announcement: Fall Sacramento area VMware User Group Meeting
Hello Everyone!

I'm very excited to announce the Fall Sacramento VMware User Group meeting will be held on November 6th! This is the last VMUG of the year and trust me, you don't want to miss it! By popular demand we will be giving a recap of VMworld 2008 followed by a presentation on VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). This month's meeting will be sponsored by Network Appliance, who has graciously offered to provide dinner, beverages, and a cool giveaway!

Daniel Speciale of Network Appliance will be demonstrating VDI in a hands-on lab while Benjamin Craig of River City Bank will facilitate a recap of VMworld 2008! We are currently looking for attendees of VMworld who would like to volunteer to share their experiences with the community. Cisco Systems has also given us a new piece of demo gear: One of their brand new 48 port 10Gb Ethernet switches which will be onsite for your perusal. As always, if anyone has suggestions or specific questions they would like us to address, please post them on the Sacramento Area VMware User Group forum which can be found here:

http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmug/us-west/sacramento

For those of you who are new to the community, let me provide a little history... Even though these meeting are (gratefully) sponsored, this is NOT a sales event. We've decided to put together an on-going "case study" of a fictitious company that has determined they are going to virtualize their environment. At each meeting we cover different aspects of planning and deploying virtualization via VMware. We started with "Assessing Your Infrastructure", and moved on to: "Building a Scalable Infrastructure", "Leveraging VMware features to Meet Business Requirements", "Backup, Recovery, and DR/BRP", and "Real-World Deployment Issues". Undoubtedly, we will continue to inject some twists and turns along the way. We intend to bring in equipment and setup a lab as needed.

WHEN:
Thursday evening the 6th of November 2008 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm (Plan on leaving the office a little early so you can avoid traffic.)

WHERE:
Cattlemens Restaurant
12409 Folsom Blvd.
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670
(916) 985-4249
http://www.beststeakinthewest.com/rc.htm

AGENDA:
5:00 to 5:50pm - Meet, greet, and grab a pint!
5:50 to 6:00pm - Review of the previous meeting's presentation
6:00 to 7:00pm - Dinner and Presentation: VMworld 2008 Recap and VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure)
7:00 to 9:00pm - Q&A, open discussion and peer networking

HOW TO RSVP:
If you haven't already done so, please "Officially" sign up to be a member of the VMware User Group here:
http://www.vmware.com/vmug

We will send out an official "Fall Sacramento User Group Invitation" through VMware this week. Please help us provide an accurate head-count for the restaurant. Because seating is limited to about 100 people, we ask that you confirm your attendance by responding to the official e-mail. (Based on recent attendance, we will be providing a amplified mic so everyone can hear.)

Please pass this invitation on to any co-workers and associates who may be interested in VMware, and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me!

Thanks!
Have anyone implement VMware VDI?
Hi all,

Just wonder that anyone in VMUG SD have implement VMware VDI? If som can share what your experience? Also, what thin-client devices that you use and recomend?

I am in the process to setup a test environment to test and evaluate the VMware VDI with WYSE, HP and Panalogic thin-client devices.

Cheers,
I have VMWare Fusion 1.0 and Windows XP Home Edition running on a MacBook. About a month about, my DSL Internet connection stopped running properly in Windows (it works fine on the Mac side). I have tried a system restore and other fixes recommended in Windows Help, but think I'm at the point where I just have try and reinstall Windows. How do I do that through VMWare Fusion?
Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group Training Days Invitation
Hi All,

We (Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group - RMOUG) would like to invite VMUG members to participate in the RMOUG Training Days event. We are a group of primarily technical Oracle software users and we believe that we could benefit from having members from VMUG present information around vmware best practices, tips/tricks as well as best practices or case studies. (Or anything else you would think is applicable for that matter :))

We have a seen a great increase in the number of vmware installations that run Oracle products in the last few years, making vmware a new and very interesting technology to us. In addition, I am guessing that some VMUG members come in contact with Oracle software as well and there will be plenty of opportunity for you to attend various Oracle sessions at Training Days in order to increase your knowledge and collaborate with us.

For more information, here is a link to our website: http://www.rmoug.org/

Here is the training days invitation and registration information:
I am having a problem with internet connection in virtualization

I am using a Macbook Pro. I have Win XP Pro installed. I am using a bridged connection in the virtual machine. I can see the mac side of things just fine and I can alsso ping the router in command line. For some reason that I cannot figure out my connection is not getting a default gateway and cannot connect to the internet. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

VMWare crash

I have VMWare version 1 installed on a MacBook Pro. I use Windows XP Pro on my virtual machine which was working Thursday.
On Friday, when I tried to run Windows, I got the following error messages: Could not open paging file for 512 MB: No such file or directory.
Cannot restore virtual machine RAM from file /Users/Ami/Documents/Virtual Machines/Windows XP Professional.vmwarevm/Windows XP Professional.vmem. The file may be corrupted.
Error encountered while trying to restore the state of group memory from file "/Users/Ami/Documents/Virtual Machines/Windows XP Professional.vmwarevm/Windows XP Professional.vmss".

I assume I need to uninstall Windows + /- VMWare and load them again. Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Ami
