what's wrong with the bridged network option?

I have an intel iMac with 2.5 GB RAM running Snow Leopard, I recently installed VMware Fusion 3.0 and installed both Windows 7 and OpenSuse as guest operating systems. Everything seems to work fine when I use the NAT option for networking. Whenever I try to use a bridged network neither internet nor communication between the mac and either of the 2 guests is possible (I only run one guest at the time). The system seems to create an "unknown public network" which impedes all communication.

Does anybody know what could be the cause of this?

Thanks in advance.

Allocate 4 vCPU to Windows 7????

We are getting a stats program that can run on Xp/Win7 x64. It really needs a Quad core CPU to run efectively, but the OS only allows for 2 physcal processors. Is there a way to make it look like the virtual machine has 4 vCPU?
Install issue - XP Pro on ESXi 3.5
Hello everyone. I've been pouring over the forums and can't quite find the answer I'm looking for. I'm trying to install XP Pro on ESXi 3.5.

Here's where I'm at.

Placed XP ISO on the datastore

Placed the Buslogic and LSI .flp on the datastore

Created a VM selecting LSO as the controller

Atatched the .flp to the floppy drive

Mounted XP iso and booted to CD

Hit F6 and select the LSI driver it presented

Format disc, then says it making a list of files to copy and an error pops up saying it can't find the .sys files that are on the floppy. I didn't disconnect it. I hot ESC to continue and it lists all the files on the floppy, but it can't copy them.

Any idea what the problem is? Thanks.

Inability to extend boot partition of win2003 on GSX 3.0.1 client server

Hello great pals,
I have a problem on how to increase the boot/system partition of all my win2003 vm Clients, all seating on a win2000 VMWARE GSX 3.0.1 Host Server.
I have Eight (8) Guest servers: 4 running Win2000 and the other 4 on Win2003. I used Vmware-Vdiskmanager.exe to entend both Boot/System and Data partions of all the win2000 client boxes, as well as all the data(E:\) partitions on all the win2003 client boxes. My Challenge/difficulty is on the Boot/Windows system partition of all the win2003 client servers. After growinging their respective sizes, I used diskpart.exe to extend but.....to my surprise, Disk Mangement able to recognise the newly increased size but Windows could not see the newly increased sizes. It shows/sees it as they were.
From online support and researches, I have used gparted-livecd-0.3.4-10 and KNOPPIX_V5.0.1CD-2006-06-01-EN, while booting with them from cd-rom. When booted and executed, they see these extended sizes. Yet nothing is really effected. See attached images. Could someone kindly help out on how to makje windows see the new increment?

Regards.
iSCSI Connectivity

I have a host configured with a vSwitch for iSCSI traffic. A VM guest is set up with RDM access to a volume on an iSCSI SAN. The connectiviy to the iSCSI SAN is available and functioning. However, connectivity from our Enterprise storage solution fails. From the VM we can ping all iSCSI devices except for the iSCSI ip on the host VM and no iSCSI device can ping the iSCSI ip on the host VM . This doesn't make sense, as I can access the iSCSI SAN via these iSCSI settings on the host. One night we were able to back up all the data on the SAN connected to the VM guest. The next night the backup servers could not connect to the VM hosts iSCSI IP.
Any ideas on what could be causing this anomaly?
Thanks for any assistance.
Might be a bit late but just for info:

If you have issues with the Mouse pointer being missing after VMware tools installed

http://communities.vmware.com/message/419558

Then try installing the vmware tools then using the keyboard navigate to device manager and select:
Mice & Other pointing devices, right click VMware Pointing Device & select properties,
Selected Advanced Settings tab, change Wheel Detaction to disabled.
Click OK and reboot.

This worked for me fine.

We successfully cloned a Windows 2008 VM but we cannot clear the Computer ID. WSUS keeps seeing the server as the previous machine. It has a new SID from adding it to the domain but the computer ID is the same. We tried the vm configuration wizard but that didnt work. We tried using sysprep but it gets a fatal error attempting to prep the OS. Is there another way or a tool that will help us reset the computer ID on this Windows 2008 VM?

Keyboard not getting released from guest.

Recently installed an ESX system and also vSphere server. When I start a virtual machine (OS does not seem matter) and click in the console of the vm, I am then unable to get the keyboard released back to the host. Pressing any key on the keyboard pops the cursor back to the last guest console I was in. The mouse works with no problem both in host and guest. Closing the console gives the host back it's control. This seems to be specific to my workstation becuase I have two other people run the same vm from the ESX and vSphere and they work okay.

I also have VMware Workstation and any vm's running there acts normal.

Any input would be much appreciated.
RE: I Need an Expert Opinion

Hi There,

Could someone "please advise" as to an expert opinion as to what might be happening as well as a possible solution to the following issue. Each time that I reinstall my os or purchase a new computer with Windows (xp, live 7, vista), I notice the following and at random:

1. Under admin tools, computer management, disk management, the service that connects initially is the logical disk service. However, once I run updates for either Norton or Windows Updates, the service converts to "virtual disk services". I am concerned because I am constantly crashing due to inadequate drivers.

2. I also notice that each time this happens that the software distribution folder under windows has a new update service WSUS, which is a totally separate application that you can install on Windows Server 2008 that automates the updates process for windows update for server 2008. Correct? Please note that I am running workstations without virtualization as they are new or repurposed and not servers.

3. Also, I find a unique key in the registry under Windows CE Services and Windows CE RNDIS whereby a smart phone and a pocket pc is enabled with a value of "2". Additionally, there is a URL listed under source 1386 for x:Ms-Windows-source1386/asms/. If I go to the system root, I am able to find 1386 in Windows with about a trillion files in it.

4. Although, I am very familiar with virtual hosting and troubleshooting guest os's from a pure administration standpoint, as well as the development of virtual appliances, I would like a 2nd opinion as to "what to do" and "how to handle" this situation as it continues to crash my workstations.

5. All things aside, could someone please tell me "how" to avoid this "virtual" hell as I am tired of installing and reinstalling after updates run? All responses and opinions are greatly appreciated.

WinXP - host memory usage

Hello,

I am testing VDI and I have noticed that memory sharing/release doesn’t work on
my WinXPs. I have 15 WinXP running on the box and all of them use all memory
which I assign them. Every VM has 1GB RAM assigned. I see 1GB in “Consument
Host Memory”. When I start W2k3 server on this box I see memory release after
few minutes.

I have installed latest Vmtools and this issue is on ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.

Could you help me with this issue? Does anybody have the same experiences?
No CTRL+ALT Delete Logon screen after P2V

Hi - I have a customer with some really old physical NT 4 Terminal Servers (running Citrix Metaframe 1.8), I'm trying to virtualize them. After running a successful P2V the new VM appears to starts up successfully, go through the normal NT 4 boot process, but it never display's the logon box. Has anyone ever come across this before after P2Ving a NT4 server?

I'm using vSphere 4.0. I've tried the VMware Converter which is built into vCenter and the standalone version. Both converters report a successful conversion. I've also noticed that the VM runs at 100% CPU once it's been converted and is sitting on the blank Windows NT 4 screen waiting for the logon box to appear. I've also noticed that because it’s NT4 Terminal Server, it's using a slightly different GINA than the normal NT4 Server, maybe this has something to do with it. - Any help is appreciated. Thanks Danny

WindowsXP: restarts hang at "Windows is Shutting Down" on VMs
HI there!

We are running an ESX 4.0.0, 164409 and have problems with our virtual Windows XP SP3 (with latest Updates).

After installing automatic Updates from our internal Wsus Server the guests try to make the automatic restart (not all at the same time)

but they hang at "Windows is Shutting Down"...

If this problem occurs i had to log into our vSphere client - open the console and klick one time into it... after that the vm restarts!!!

The Problem is ... we're using these vm's for a few mobile users... and there aren't allways admins in our office so we had to find a solution...

any ideas?

cpu usage spike on VM workstation 6.5 and Server 2

Hi,

We've recently upgraded some of the VMs from Workstation 6 to 6.5, as well as trying out the VMware Server 2, and we encountered a strange issue, not sure if anyone have seen anything similar and have worked out a solution for it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advices!

Environment:
Host OS: 32 bit Windows XP Professional w/ SP3
Memory: 3GB

Guest OS: 32 bit Windows XP Professional w/ SP3
Office 2003 Professional w/ SP3
Memory: 768MB
Virtual Disk: 60GB, not split into 2GB, not pre-allocated

Scenario:
We use an order management system that sends out order status emails via user's Outlook account. In order to not trip Outlook's security warning every time, we also use a plug-in called Advanced Security for Outlook by MAPILab (http://www.mapilab.com/outlook/security/) to allow access. So the operation goes as follows: User verify that the order has reached a certain stage, such as received tracking number, so he/she clicks on send tracking email to customer from the order management system. Email would end up in user's Outlook outbox, which user might add additional notes to it if necessary, and at the next send/receive cycle, email would be sent out to the customer.

Issue occurs AFTER user clicks on send email on the order management system, and BEFORE the email ends up in user's outbox. In task manager, CPU would spike to 100% (or 50% if use 2 virtual CPU) for outlook.exe and effectively freeze the virtual machine for few seconds, until the email ends up in user's outbox, cpu usage for outlook.exe will then ramp down to normal.

After some test, this behavior does not occur in physical machine or VMs in Workstation 6. It only shows up in Workstation 6.5 and Server 2.0 for us. We've tested with following step:

Creating a clean Guest OS in Workstation 6

Install Office

Perform all necessary Microsoft updates

Install our order management system

Install Outlook plug-in

Send email from order management system (tested okay)

Copy VM to Workstation 6.5

Send email from order management system (with CPU usage spike)

Copy VM to Server 2

Send email from order management system (with CPU usage spike)

We've also try to create a clean Guest OS from Workstation 6.5 and Server 2.0, instead of copied over from Workstation 6, but same behavior still occurs. Not sure if anyone seem similar behavior while performing other actions?
I want to know how to create a valid VM with out remote storage devices that can be used to create a package in RSP? Or, how can i obtain a pre-package VM image of Windows 2008 for use in Riverbed RSP package creator.
Performance problems on Windows 2008 failover cluster file server on VSphere 4

We have successfully setup a Windows 2008 failover cluster running on two VMS on two separate VSphere 4 hosts. We're using this as a high availability file store (file server failover cluster service installed) for use as a repository for web page images. The configured share is mounted as a virtual directory on web servers.

The content share itself is on a clustered RDM disk.

Anyway, technically it all works OK and we have a more complex setup running SQL 2008 on a virtualised Win 2008 cluster that is good too.

The problem though is this...

When we run high-ish volumes of traffic on the web servers, the page load times increase exponentially and is due to the images loading slowly. We know that the HAFS is responsible as we've moved the images locally to the web servers and it runs much quicker/as expected.

We have eliminated network restrictions between VMs (the web servers are virtual guests also) and between hosts.
We find manually copying and reading files to the HAFS runs at comparatively normal speed, the problem only manifests itself when used as an image store. I guess the nature of high number of consecutive/concurrent reads.

There are around 6000 image files from 1K to 128K in size.
I don't have the read request/sec or read bytes/sec info but might be able to get something.

There's no mention we can find that talks about access thresholds in this setup. Anyone had similar problems or does anyone actually use VMWare/Windows in this way?

Any response would be appreciated.

I've tried to disable hotplug as mentioned in KB 1012225 but nothing changes...anyone still can stop NIC and controller as hotplug device...HEEELP!
Application with Oracle 9i doesn't work after migrate from esx 3.0.1 to 3.5 update 4
Hi there,

We've got at the company 2 Esx clusters. The first cluster is a ESX 3.0.1 cluster (build-34176), the otherone is a ESX 3.5 update 4 cluster.

We've got a virtual machine with windows 2003 standard edition with a oracle 9i database. The application is also running on this virtual machine.

Last week ik migrated the virtual machine from the esx 3.0.1 version to the esx 3.5 version. (remove from inventory -> add to inventory). We also updated the vmware tools to the latest version (build 184236).

If we want to start the application it isn't possible on the esx 3.5 cluster. If i do a remove from inventory and add the virtual machine to the 3.0.1 cluster, the application is running again. ((this had been done with the latest vmware tools (build 184236).

I've chat with the company but the don't give official support on the application on vmware.

The hardware from the 3.0.1 and 3.5 are the same.

Has someone an idea? I heard something that it can come because tcp/ip ports aren't open.

note: the dutch version is writte here: http://www.vmug.nl/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4410
Performance Issues for 32-bit VM after 64-Host Bios setting changed
I am running esx 3.5 build 153875 on a HP FL580 G5 It shows 8 CPU x 2.933GHz and 32GB of RAM

I have a 32-bit WIndows 2003 Server VM on that host running SQL Server on 4 vCPUsand 12GB of RAM (with PAE on)

The VM ran OK (not great) but when I changed the BIOS settings to turn on to get maximum Dit Length of 64 bit and turn on DEP and Hardware Virtualization; I now get slower performacne on the 32bit VM.

I turned them on because I want to build a 64 Bit VM on the same host with Server 2008 and SQL Server (hopefully I can relocate)

Does anyone have any idea why I would see slower perfformance on the vm. The new 64bit OS isn't even fully installed yet so that is not taking any power away...

The "Securable" tool reads 64,Yes,Yes on my 32bit VM.

Suggestions?
We're running several SLES 10 Sp2 guests on a ESX 3.5 update 4 server. The performance on normal acces on this machines is ok, but for Backup i wish to have more power here. We're using BackupExec 11d remote agents here.
Deploying Windows 2008 From Template using vCenter
I have a Windows 2008 template that has some minor custom changes like a renamed admin account and some changes on the desktop. When I deploy the template using the custimization Wizard, the admin account reverts back to being named "admin" and the desktop is back to looking like a clean installed. However other changes such as installed software does show up.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen or if there is a way to make the first to changes stick after deploying the template.
VNC server compression issues on Win2k3
I've noted an issue with vncserver in Windows 2003 server running on VMWare ESX 3.5.0 (153875).

After a few days/weeks of running the vncserver on some of my systems, connections to vnc stops working and I get a disconnect message while trying to connect.

plewis@perdain:~$ vncviewer servername

Connected to RFB server, using protocol version 3.3
Performing standard VNC authentication
Password:
Authentication successful
Desktop name "servername"
VNC server default format:

32 bits per pixel.*

Least significant byte first in each pixel.*

True colour: max red 255 green 255 blue 255, shift red 16 green 8 blue 0*

Using default colormap which is TrueColor. Pixel format:

32 bits per pixel.*

Least significant byte first in each pixel.*

True colour: max red 255 green 255 blue 255, shift red 16 green 8 blue 0*

vncviewer: read: Connection reset by peer

I can successfully connect if I force the compression to -bgr233

plewis@perdain:~$ vncviewer servername -brg233

Then the connection works fine.

However, there are other issues with some of the software on the server itself at this point. Our software does html conversions and image proofs. This conversion process also breaks. Until a restart, vncserver and the image process will not work.

The two issues definately seem to corespond to each other. I believe it has to do with some image compression library that is shared between the two processes. This has never happened on a physical machine.

This does not happen on all of my virtual windows servers and might be related to setting the video hardware acceleration. The only systems that seem to be effected by this had it set to full. The uneffected machines had it set to the first notch. I've throttled back the hardware settings to the first notch and rebooted. I'll keep this thread posted to see if the issue appears again.

Hope this helps someone else.

Virtual CPU and VP consolidation
Hello,

We are getting ready to consolidate our vmware servers from 8 ESX to 4 ESX servers. We have about 45 VMs. The ESX Servers are 2.3 x 8 core, and 32 GB of memory. Most of our VMs are configured with 2 virtual VMs, as they seem to work best with this config, and it is also how HP\VM engineers set it up.

After consolidation, each ESX server will have about 18-20 Virtual CPUs assigned to servers. Is this going to present a performance problem? Current CPU usage is never high, so it is not like these servers are using all of their resources that they have been assigned, however, i understand that if 2 virtual CPUs are assigned to a server that when a process is executed it will have to wait until 2 physcal cores are aviable for usage.

Going off of current usage, each ESX Server uses at most 1/3 of it's resources for 7 of the 8 ESX servers (1 is offline).

Should I be consernced with this consoildaion?
Hi,

I'm working on the Cosmos project (www.gocosmos.org), and we want to implement a driver for the VMware graphics card, but we are unable to find any specification for it. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Issue: Sometimes VM is unable to communicate to network (Not pingable). VM is in running state when checked from VI console.

Reboot from VI client fixes the problem. (ESX 3.5 U4 / VC 2.5)

Question: Is there any permanent solution to fix this issue.

upgrade server 2000 to 2003 problems
We are upgrading a server 2000 guest O/S to 2003 and the upgrade justs hangs with 100% cpu and 0% performance readings for network, disk and memory.

A reset and shutdown and estart have all been attempted to kick start the process, but to no avail.

The guest O/S has 2GB memory and a single cpu, there was no issues with the 2000 box other than it was decided to upgrade to 2003.

Any one had a similar scenario or can offer any solutions.

Many thanks.

Time sync between ESX and guests
Hello All,

I have a question regarding the time sync behaviour.

I have several virtualized DC on ESX and I disabled the time sync between the host and the guests. All is ok.
But I wonder if time is still sync between the host and the emulated guest BIOS or not. Because, if my computer use the W32Time parameter NoSync, it trusts the computer's clock. If I disabled the time sync on ESX tools, when I shut down my Windows, is the emulated bios time still accurate? Does my question make sense?

Thanks.

Bz!
All the discussion about the Windows 2008 R2 SVGA issue mention it won't be supported until 2008 R2 goes GA. It's now GA, but it appears to be still flagged as experimentally supported. Anyone have any ideas when VMWare plans to officially support 2008 R2?

VMs and Windows Performance Monitor
In the next few days I will be preparing load testing on a clients existing physical environment and newly created virtual environment to compare system performance under load.

After reading up on the subject, my understanding of various online documents has shown that we cannot rely accurately on data captured from within the virtual machines using Windows Performance Monitor because of a skewing of time within the virtual machine.

Could anyone confirm that using Windows performance Monitor from a remote physical machine to capture data from the virtual machine machine overcome this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Issues with PXE and obtaining IP

Not sure if this is the right section but I have intermittent PXE issues with VMware Workstation 6.5.3

We run a Novell ZCM server which handles our PXE/imaging, I have been creating images in vmware and trying to upload them to zcm but every once in awhile it just stops working and refuses to get an IP in the preboot environment, the only way to even get to the interface to create an image is to use a boot cd, but once i get to the bash for that, ifconfig shows no IP. Also what might be of relevance is sometimes it lets me try and pull an image down to a blank vm then crashes out with a segmentation fault.

VMware's nic is set to bridged as I've read everywhere this is what its supposed to be set to and physical machines can connect to pxe with no issues whatsoever.

Would getting a second nic for the pc and dedicating it to vmware help at all? Thanks in advance for the help on this as its been frustrating.
Help in Active Directory/Exchange 2007 SCC Guest VM for Disaster Recovery

Hello,
I have completed the VMware Vi3 at our Disaster Recovery
Data Center. And what I'm looking for, what options available to move
the existing Active Directory and Exchange Environment from our
Production to the DR Site.

I though of the below options, and i would like to know what is the best from the expert.

Domain Controller(s) Options:

[1]Build an additional vDC to be part of the existing Domain architecture.
[2]Backup the vDC with vRanegr and restore at DR Site.
[3]P2V exisiting DC(s), which is not recommended at all.

Exchange SCC Servers Options:

The current Exchange Setup is SCC under SAN Storage. Two MBx Clustered, 1 HT and 1 CAS.

[1]P2V the Passive Node only C: Drive without the Shared LUNs.
[2]P2V the second Passive Node also only C: drive without the Shared LUNs.
[3]Once the conversion is done, backup the vNode(s) with vRanger.
[4]At DR Site, will create the same LUN(s) size and present them to the ESX Servers as RDM
[5]Restore the Production vNode(s), map the new LUNs to the VM and boot. "Hope they boot fine"
[6]Reconfigure the Cluster Quorum and DB LUN(s)
[7]Restore DB Backup and check DB integrity and start the services.

Or is there another option that i can consider since i'm in the planning stage of DR Services?

Thanks or your feedback in advance.

Best Regards,

Linux Guest and LSI 4.x scsi driver

I have a linux guest (2.6.23 based) that uses the new-ish LSI driver, version 4002100. However, it fails to see any disks, and fails during probe with
mptspi: ioc0: WARNING - Skipping because it's not operational!

This is not the problem of a few years ago where 'pfacts' was incorrectly reporting the max number of sub-devs.

My guess is that in mptbase.c, when mpt_GetIocState() calls

it is not getting the correct value.

Anyone (LSI????) have any ideas on what to try?

Windows 2008 x64 and Sysprep

I get an error "Windows could not be configured to run on your hardware" after running the Windows 2008 (x64) Sysprep process. I get the same error when I use the ESX customisation process when deploying from a template, and when I run the built-in Sysprep command (as per http://www.brajkovic.info/windows-server-2008/windows-server-2008-r2/how-to-change-sid-on-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2-using-sysprep/ ) But, I can run the old NewSID command (http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=736) and this works fine, but Microsoft do not support that method.

I can create a new installation of Windows 2008 x64 and Windows 2008 R2 x64, but each time I try to use Sysprep on any 2008 x6 machine on ESX, I get the generic warning that it can't continue, with only an OK button and then it reboots.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Windows System Resource Management (WSRM) on guest OS
Hi, we have a virtual machine running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2. I installed WSRM on it in order to perform some CPU (or I should say vcpu) management because of a problematic application that takes all the processor from time to time.

I configured WSRM as it should but when I run tests, the problematic application goes over the allocated cpu percentage.

My question is: Is WSRM supposed to work on a virtual machine? I know people use it on their hosts but I'm not able to find instances where people use it on the guest itself.

We're running ESX 3.5 and I'm still new at VMWare so please bear with me.

Thank you

snapshotting--do you quiesce the VM?
Running vSpehere 4.0.

When taking a snapshot of a regular Windows server, when it has NO databases, do you ENABLE the option to "quiesce guest file system" when snapshotting?

What about taking a snapshot of a Windows server when it HAS a database, do you ENABLE the option to "quiesce guest file system" when snapshotting?

This seems to really be a confusing topic for me... Some people have believe one way, others, another way, and some say it doesn't matter?

Just wondering what others out there find themselves doing...
Windows Server 2008 R2 disk sizing?
Hello all,

We are planning for deploying Windows Server 2008 R2 when it's supported by VMware.

What size will you guys use for system drive?

How do you generally do with drives on 2008 servers? Put apps on a second drive or extend system drive?

Looking at Guest Operating System installation Guide for Windows Server 2008 64-bit, a minimum of 24 GB is recommended. R2 will only ship as 64-bit so I guess that will be a good guess.

Since we store our VMs on Fibre Channel drives that are replicated to our DR site we want to keep wasted space to a minimum.

Would be interesting to hear how you manage disks on your 2008 (R2) servers! Thanks!
Map net interface to host VPN?
I sometimes work at home connected to work by VPN.

If the host already has VPN initialized, is there a way to make the guest come up on the VPN instead of having to repeat the VPN login on the guest?

Is it easy to switch back and forth?

(Connecting from home has five different steps that don't have to be done at the office. Not doing them twice would be nice.)

Fail to boot Linux installation from CD-ROM drive
Hi,

I am trying to install RHEL3 from VMware client. To boot the virual system from CD/DVD drive, I have tried both the "Client Device" and the "Host Device - /vmfs/devices/genide/vmhba1:0:0", but kept getting error "Operating System not found" in the console window. It is confirmed that the RHEL 1st disk is in the CD-ROM drive and bootable. It seems that the virtual machine can recognize neither the CD-ROM drive on the VMware client nor the CD-ROM drive on the host (server).

Any idea? Thank you in advance!
My RDMs already in use are available to add to other guests - isn't this a problem?
I have ESX 3.5 U2 on a DRS farm consisting of 8 hosts and about 150 guest VMs. vCenter 2.5 U3. Some Virtual RDMs I've created are supposes to be used by only 1 guest OS. The problem is, I am able to add these same disks to other guest VMs if I want to. I believe this is a problem, since I have not setup these disks to be shared, nor do I have any clustering setup for these disks. I am not adding a shared disk by "use existing" when adding a hard drive, I am simply adding an RDM. What I see available to me are some (not all) RDMs that have been presented in the past. This doesn't happen on all RDMs, only some. Most RDMs, when attached to a guest VM, will dissappear.

I'm concerned because I don't want to accidentally add a disk and have 2 guest machines trying to access the same disk - that can corrupt the disk. Again, no guest clustering software is being used.

Windows Server Standard 2003 SP2 Stop errors

Hello All.

We have been experiencing stop errors for the passed few months on one of our VMware Guest OS servers. It is a Windows 2003 SP2 machine and has the lastest Tools and ESX updates. We are hosting the storage on a NetAPP 2050 SAN (Fiber Channel). I have exhausted everything I knew with these particular Stop Errors. They are the "Driver is Less or Equal to Zero" with the following codes and bug checks:

Error code 000000d1, parameter1 00001002, parameter2 d0000002, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 89393b8c.

The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x00001002, 0xd0000002, 0x00000001, 0x8a01604f)

Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated.
I have two vSphere host I a cluster attached to iSCSI SAN. I have a windows 2003 server I have a windows 2003 server VM that showed as invalid in VC. I removed it from the inventory, and I can see the files on the datastore. My when I go to the datastore and try to add the vm to the inventory, the add to inventory selection is greyed out. I tried to delete the vswp file and the file cannot be deleted. I used the following command to see if it is actually loaded: vmware-cmd -l. The VM is not listed on either host. that showed as invalid in VC.

I also ran 'service mgmt-vmware restart' to restart hostd. I then ran 'vm-support -x' and see if the VM is running on the host, and it is not. What steps should I take to resolve this?
ESX 3.5 update 4
Virtual Server 2.5.0

I have tried 2 different iso's copied to the esx server, mounted 2008 cd from microsoft from the local drive and mounted one of the iso's burned to dvd on the local drive. This should rule out the media but I was able to mount the local cdrom and start loading windows 2003 server?

There are no errors and the screen goes blank after "loading windows files" then the "windows bar" then you get the screen bellow. The vm is running just can't see anything.
interface.

I have " ethtool operation 3 not supported" errors filling up dmesg. Lists &
Forums say to ignore it, as it's a known issue, but I would like to get to the bottom
of it.

Here is the output:

<strike>root@server ~</strike># ethtool -k eth0
Cannot get device tx csum settings: Operation not supported
Cannot get device scatter-gather settings: Operation not supported
udp fragmentation offload: off
generic segmentation offload: off

The thing is I have a copy of this server on my test
network, which doesn't have any of these errors. The clone was taken a few days
ago, and this problem has been happing since we migrated to VM (about March).
The test network doesn't get hit anywhere near the same kind of requests as the
live system, but if I could just find out what is causeing it, then maybe I can
turn it off. Here is the ethtool output from my test lan:

<strike>root@server ~</strike># ethtool -k eth0

Offload parameters for eth0:

Cannot get device rx csum settings: Operation not supported
Cannot get device tx csum settings: Operation not supported
Cannot get device scatter-gather settings: Operation not supported

Any help / suggestions on how to find the root cause
would be appreciated.
Win2000 Guest Machine - LSI20320 SCSI Drivers
The scenario: Install Windows 2000 Pro SP4 in a VM by booting from the CD. The VM has the LSI Logic SCSI adapter defined, with a single 3GB hard disk. I'm working on Workstation 6.5.2, but want to create a VM image that's compatible with Workstation 5+, ESX 3+, Server 1+... It will eventually have both the LSI Logic driver and the Bus Logic driver.

I obtained the LSI20320 drivers for Windows 2000 from the LSI Logic website (file SymMPI_SCSI_W2k_1.28.03.zip). After unzipping these onto a "floppy", I used F6 to load them during the CD boot. There were many choices (about 10) of adapter to support. I tried a couple unsuccessfully (OS didn't see the disk). Then I tried loading ALL of them. The OS STILL doesn't see the disk.

The question to VMware (or anyone who knows) - Is this the correct file? If not, how do I find the CORRECT one? When I do, what choices should I make when choices are available?

Thanks in advance ...
Networking problem with Suse Linux
Hi there,

I have to run a Suse 7.2 VM, because there are some still used applications on it.

I converted the VM from VMware Server 2 to vSphere 4 but I cannot reach anything via network. The NIC is running and up. The default gateway is there, yet I cannot ping it or other machines. I'm new to vSphere and don't have a clue where to look for the error.

Thanks
Hi,

Is there any limit on the number of Virtual machine instances started from a single vmdk(golden) ?

is it os dependent? (i dont think would be present)

any parameters that would affect the limit.

How do i configure a Netware 6.5 guest VM to see the tape Library on a Dell Powervault 124T? I am currently running ESX-I 4.0 on a Dell 2950 III with a Dell 124T Autoloader. I am using a LSI 1030 PCI-E SAS SCSI card to attach to the 124T. I installed a Netware 6.5 guest VM and Backexec 9.1 for Netware on the server. Backupexec is able to see the tape unit as a stand alone unit but not the Robot. I have tried upgrading the driver set for new tape drives but Backupexec still unable to see the Robot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Guest OS: RHEL5

First time I provisioned a RHEL5 guest. when I configured the VM, I selected the vmxnet enhanced driver. After initial OS install, I installed vmware tools and then rebooted. tada...eth0 exists now. it shows it is using the "vmxnet" driver though (via ethtool). Is that the enhanced vmxnet driver or the standard vmxnet driver?

Virtual Machine booting from a network location

Hi

I am looking at a solution to tap into the portability of virtualization across hardware. i.e. if I have my development environment as a VM, I can access it and bring it up from any machine on the network. This will enable me to be not attached to any physical machine and allow me to access my development machine seamlessly from anywhere if it is stored in a network location. I have mainly two questions around such a setup.

1) Is there anyway of hosting the VM without incurring the expense of both the host operating system and the guest operating system? The only functionality of the host operating system to host the VM.

2) Is it viable from a performance stand point to have a VM booted up on a machine from a vhd placed at a network location?

Tomcat6 running on Win2K3 Server Virtual machine - High CPU/Memory Utilization

I have a virtual machine running Win2K3 Server, CPU and memory utilization has been extermely high when Tomcat6 is started up (running as a service). Allocated memory for the VM has been changed from 1gig, to 2 gig, to 4 gig, and processors from 1, to 2, to 4, but none of those changes have helped to speed up the startup time for Tomcat 6. After about an hour things seem to level off, with the tomcat6 exectuable showing 700-800K of memory used. Are there known issues that I may be hitting running tomcat6 as a service on a virtual 2003 server? Or do I need to do some performance tuning based on the work thats being done via tomcat6 (adaptive authentication)?

Weird issue with virtual XPP\Java
I have an application that must run on XP Pro. I recently virtualized it. Almost everything seems great (faster, fewer crashes, etc), with just one exception:

This machine runs an application that leverages Java on Apache, and the Java application has time dependent functionality built into it. Ever since it was virtualized, the time has been off within the applcation. The server itself is fine, as is the host system. It is only in the application that it shows 30 minutes in advance of what the actual time is. I realize that Java (JRE6) gets its time at bootup, and then does a "cpu tick" count to keep time accurate. However, even on a reboot, the application doesn't have the correct time. There is no place within the administration module of the application to change time. At 30 minutes, I can't believe that DST plays a role ... and anyway, it was working fine on the physical machine.

I have contacted the application vendor's support staff, and he is stumped. He has never seen this before and can't imaging why it would behave this way.

If we can't get this working, we'll have to go back to the physical box. This is a deal-breaker. Any ideas?

The machine is a Windows 2008 machine and I would like to set it up in a manner that even when the site is being updated the server is accessible. I guess the question I have is, can I have a VM with high availibility turned on and edit one while keeping the other up and running? When web changes have been committed switch to the other?

Any ideas on a best practice here to minimize downtime?

FreeBSD 7.2 amd64 on ESX 3.5 - Will not find hard disk, any advice?
I'm trying to get a FreeBSD VM going on my ESX 3.5 cluster and I'm not having a lot of luck. We've got a 50GB RDM to our SAN mapped as SCSI ID 0:0 via an LSI Logic host adaptor and the OS refuses to find any hard disks. I changed to the Bus Logic adaptor and I still am in the same boat.

I will freely admit I'm not a FreeBSD nor a Unix expert in any way. I did see that the boot messages show something about LSI Logic but it scrolls by too fast for me to see. Either way, I get no hard disks. I tried breaking out to the loader prompt and loading the mpt and mfa modules, and I still did not see any disks.

I switched to an Ubuntu ISO and booted off of that and I was able to see the disk, create and edit partitions, etc..

Any advice?

Thanks!
manually and when I tried to start the ipmi service, I am getting the
following errors,
++Does that mean that my kernel does not support ipmi_si?
I tried installing the IPMI on the ESX3.5 which has this virtual
IPCOP problems after ESXi 4.0 PSOD
This morning the Virtual Server that runs IPCOP crashed with a PSOD although it rebooted fine IPCop would not connect to the internet continually saying connecting, however we have another Virtual Server that runs a couple of other things but the network cards a setup the same way for backup purposes so I moved the IPCop VM to the other server and fired it up and it connected fine to the internet, so my theroys are either the crash has caused corruption of the NIC drivers or the network point in the server is faulty ( We have a router set into bridge mode feeding the red interface on IPCOP) Is there anyway to fix this or ist it just a simple case of formatting and reinstalling ESXi 4.0 again?

Cheers
VMware TCP port listening & services running under XP Pro

I'm new to VMware, so please forgive me if I am asking anything extremely dumb...

I installed Vmware workstation 6.5.3 under XP PRO SP3, created several guests also running XPRO. Originally I was using the guests as "NAT" based networking option but then switched them to "host" based as I did not need them to be able to reach outside the host for anything further in what I was doing.

I completed the work I needed to do and hoped to revisit VMware another time as future projects may require. However then the next day my PC started having severe network problems. As part of troubleshooting that I saw that even though I was not running VMware anymore, that a process called "vmware-authd.exe" was showing up in a utility called TCPVIEW that lets me view all connections on the PC. The process was "listening" on port 912 locally trying to connect to my same machine on port 0.

I terminated that process with TCPVIEW and my network problems went away. Digging further I saw that VMware has 4 services defined under XP - 3 of which are started automatically and always running (VMware NAT service, VMware Authorization service, VMware DHCP service) and 1 that is set to manual startup (VMware agent service). To be safe until I understand more and further troubleshoot the network problem I disabled all 4 of the services.

At this point I don't believe that VMWare was the source of the problem though since then later on the networking issues returned. However I'd like to understand more what those VMWare services do under XP and why I might want to leave them at their default settings of "automatic" and running all the time even if I am no longer running the software - and would also like to know what that process was doing via TCP listening for something (???). I see that same kind of behavior for some anti-virus scanners that are active all the time but wasn't expecting behavior like that from something like VMware (if it is not actually running).

THANKS a ton for any explanations.
I have a questione for you ( i hope this is right section ).

Have you any idea how to get more performance for Virtual Machine?

By host and guest OS..my host is Ubuntu, and guest WinXP.

These are my settings:

Ubuntu > removed some apps, configured shared memory on sysctl.conf (512MB). Services: vsftpd,apache2,mysql,php5,remote desktop,Wakeonlan.

WinXP > VMware Tools only

I'm sure it can be more performance..sorry for my ugly english..if someone can help me, write something
VcbMounter.exe is not responding to signal SIGTERM, SIGINT.

Hi
I wrote a program "testing" which has to kill vcbMounter process when Ctrl+c is pressed. I register for the signal handler function for signal SIGTERM and SIGINT On interrupt, handler call the signal interrupt handler function which invokes kill(vcbMounterPid, SIGINT) system call where vcbMounterPid is the process id of the spawned process vcbMounter binary. "testing" prcoess goes to wait state till It receive vcbMounter successfully terminates; but what I observed is vcbMounter keep going until It has done mounting all the disk and then it terminates. Thus it takes long time rather than terminating immediately on receiving signal.

vcbMounter terminates immediately on receiving Ctrl+C, if run from command line; but It is not happening with "testing" program calling kill system call. I tested "testing" program to kill other system running process and I find they were terminated immediately. Please let me know what is the reason behind this. Thanks in advance.

how to restore w2008 64bit into a VM
Hi - before you point me to converter, I already converted the image.. however, I am also trying to iron out an advanced process for restoring a physical server into a VM without ghost, or converter, or other tools. In the event the organization has a complete datacenter outage, we contracted IBM to house our DR site and help recovery.. problem is, the powers that be didn't spend enough to have enough hardware allocated at the DR site to restore physical to physical.. and they want me to come up with a procedure to take EMC networker backups of physical servers and restore them into VMs.. this worked OK with w2003 - after the restore was complete I simply installed VMware tools fresh and the OS would come up after booting into safe mode and cleaning things up.. However, with w2008 I can't get even get into safe mode, getting 7b blue screens after crcdisk.sys loads.. grrrrr... MS really outdid themself with w2008.. I tried injected VMware drivers during recovery when the load drivers box appeared, but only certain ones would load, most others failed, and I didn't even see an option for 64b scsi drivers, only 32 bit.. grrrrr.. I know this is a tough one, but if anyone has any insight into the mess I'm in that would be great. thanks!!!
Windows Security stops working in Windows XP

Periodically, a few users are having an issue where CTRL ALT DEL seems to stop working. Upon further inspection, I found that clicking start
-> windows security, nothing happens. If I click start -> log off, the log off confirmation box appears, but if you confirm, nothing happens.

It appears that there's something wrong with Windows Security.
Attempts to remotely shutdown the PC fail as well. What process does Windows Security run as? I'm suspecting that it's possibly hung and not responding to CTRL ATL DEL or any other means of invocation.

Is it possible that ESX could be causing this sort of issue?

Disk arrival issue in MSCS after failover
Hi All,

I have MSCS win2k3 across box setup on vsphere 4.0.

The issue is windows is not getting disk arrival in passive node if I create RDM on same scsi controller slot.

steps to reproduce the issue.

1. Create a shared RDM LUN-> it mapped to scsi1:1 on both node.

2. Add to LUN to cluster group.

3. Move the cluster group to passive node.

4. Delete the shared RDM

5. Again create shared RDM and mapped to SCSI1:1. RDM creation got successful but windows in not able to see the disk arrival.

But if I map shared LUN to any other controller slot i.e. SCSI1:2 ,windows able to see the disk arrival and every thing woks fine.

or if I restart the VMs, and map LUN to SCSI1:1 , it works fine. Does some where something is locking ?

Anybody has faced this issue or I am missing something ? Any pointer will be useful.

Thanks,
ESX3.5, Windows 2008 x64 Guest, Ghost 2003, Clone Disk and Resize Issue
I have created a vm with windows 2008 x64 with only a 40 GB Disk, due to the amount of software i had to install i now need to have a 50GB Disk. So i used Ghost 2003 and imaged out the Guest without issue. I then created a new guest VM windows 2008 x64 with a 50GB Disk and then ghosted in that Image in. When I boot up the image i get the Bios Screen and then a black screen with a blinking cursor bouncing all over the screen, i never see the windows splash screen at all. After that didn't work i attemped to use another utility called PING however the result was exactly the same. I then ran ghost again on my original 40GB VM and used the ghost -fdsp switch to see if that would help, i'm waiting for the results shortly. I have done this a million times without issue with windows 2003 however realizing that windows 2008 has a new boot sequence i'm guess the problem lies somewhere there. I had previously imaged out a windows 2008 x32 server and imaged it back to another VM without resizing the disks however even though it didn't work from the start i at least got an error message, for that error i used repair, command prompt, and bcdedit to add back in some lines relating to the partiion being on C:\. I also tried to do an export through Virtual Center however it doesn't recognize windows 2008. I can boot up with the windows 2008 disk and click on repair and open up a command prompt and see the c: drive fine, the issue is somewhere in the 1st part of the boot sequence. Hopefully someone has the fix for this issue. I know i could just rebuild the VM however where is the fun in that.... Any help would be appreciated...
Hi,

I noticed one thing. Some VM's when I restart them (within OS)after restart they load really slow. It sometimes take 20-30 minutes to process this loading bar. If I reset them in the meantime, then this VM is loading normally. I can't find anything related, and it really annoys me and our customers. Did anyone encounter this problem, and maybe knows some solution or workaround for this issue?

It happens to Windows 2008, windows 2003. Linux VMs are not impacted by this (for now I didn't see any problems with linux VMs)
Greetings!!

I have a scenario that the data partition is showing much more disk space used than the size of the files that are contained on the data partion. And I could not find which program or anything is using this space. The problem is disk getting less and less.

The total space is 19.9GB. Used Space is 18.7, Free space is 1.35GB. The data itself is only 3GB.
Any help on this issue will highly be appreciated.
Hi Everyone,

Have gotten some complaints and now see firsthand some issues with a windows 2000 guest running on VSphere 4 in relation to IIS5 and ftp slowness. Seems tooccur at randome times. If I useanftp client and keep logging in, I can see pauses in the welcome banners, and we get complaints about slow webpage loading times. I know...dirt old OS, but one of the reasons we virtualized as it would be a pain to rebuild this server. Other vm's on win2k3 seem tobe fine.

Have ruled out duplex/negotiation/firewall (happens even on another host in subnet. Have vmotioned to different host....hp dl380 g5 with plenty of cpu and mem....have tried switching to an e1000 adapter...reapplied service pack 4. no go.

Any ideas?

thnx much

Netware 6.5 SP7 Timesync issues following ESX Host Migration

Hi All

I have a unexpected issue. My Netware environment has been virtualised for about 18 months, I had the timesync issues to start with but all has been resolved and working for the entire time. Yesterday I changed the a ESX host from HP DL380 G4 to an HP DL380 G5. The vm's were on the SAN so it was a simple case of un-registering from Virtual Centre swapping hardware out, re-registering and powering up the vm's. However, since this the Netware Servers are now out of timesync by -9 sec. The Netware enviornment has not changed, was previously OK and the time is never more that -9 sec out but never in timesync since then. Any ideas would be most gratefully received.

One other change is that the new server is on update 4 were as the old was on update 3.

Thanks
Failed to lock main memory file
If I hit 'CNTL-Z' eg to pause the vmplayer (host=linux, guest=WinXP), it writes the state to disk and exits.

But when I restart it, I get errors such as the following

Failed to lock main memory file "/mnt/shared_data/xp2/XP.vmem".
Error encountered while trying to restore the state of group memory from file "/mnt/shared_data/xp2/XP.vmss".

Any thoughts? As it happens this dir is mounted as vfat but I've used that with previous vmplayers/Debian versions. My current set up is a AMD64 box running vmplayer installed from the VMware-Player-2.5.3-185404.x86_64.bundle under Debian Lenny (64 bit)
Missing Vmware services win 2008 x64 R2
it would apear vmware tools is not installing properly in win 2008 64 bit R2. I only see 2 of the 4+ vmware services Vmware tools service and the VMware upgrade helper. the snapshot service is completly missing.

when i had this missing in the past it was due to com+ being disabled. the problem is this R2 is a fresh install with no additional security lockdowns or patches. The other issue is the vmware tools is yet again not reporting the failed services and reporting a tools success.

Any suggestions?
vmplayer dying on Debian lenny on amd64 hardware (guest=WinXP)
I have recently upgraded my amd64 box from Debian etch to lenny. I had been using
VMware's free vmplayer on etch (to run a WinXP guest) without problems.

However, under lenny (with an un-install and then a new install of
vmplayer by running VMware-Player-2.5.3-185404.x86_64.bundle) I've had a
few problems and was wondering if anybody could advise?

a) vmplayer sometimes says the CMOS is wrong

b) vmplayer frequently hangs - lots of cpu usage, not disk bound, but
unresponsive (can occasionally click on XP's start or a program but
nothing happens), usually first notice when start IE and the IE window opens but it sits there saying 'connected' but nothing happening

All help or how to debug most welcome

Thanks, Michael

question about disk offset
We are on esx 3.5, and I have a question about the disk offset. I was looking around and saw a video stating that the offset should be 64K for the data disks. When I look at msinfo32 on my vms, it shows that the offset for my disks are 32.356B, so I assume they are mis-aligned. Several of my servers have the data drives alighed starting at a weird number. I have attached a screenshot of one of my exchange servers, and it shows the logs drive and the data drive, and they have odd offsets. My question is should these all be set to 64K? I was playing with vOptomizer from vizioncore or quest or whoever owns them now, and it shows that it can do that.

Is this necessary? Will it give better performance if changed?

P2V UnixWare 7.1
Hi All,

We currently have a UnixWare 7.1 box running some legacy accounting system which is just used for reference now. As it is such a small system and running on a dedicated server, we have decieded to virtualise it (we currently run ESXi 4).

I have followed the guild here (http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10611) up to step 7, but when trying to mount the bootfs, we have a "Device Busy" error.

I have no clue about Unix and anyones help is greatly appreciated (I have had a right old google and can't seem to find a solution!)

many thanks

Cannot connect to host from guest OS
Hi,

I have a problem related to Vmware connection.

I have two servers with me and had to use Vmware to virtualize the environment. I need 4 servers(with 2 virtual ones) and 4 virtual clients.

I have created the scenario of VPN with each client for each server.

The virtual sets(server and clients seem to work nicely) but the physical server and virtual client donot get connect. The virtual client pings to physical server only if it gets ip from dhcp.

I have the scenario as follows:

Server : Windows server 2003

client: Windows xp

Router: (virtual) 10.1.0.1/16,10.2.0.1/16,10.3.0.1/16,10.4.0.1/16,

Site 1:

Server 1: 10.1.0.2/16 gw:10.1.0.1,

                  172.16.4.1/24

client : 172.16.4.3/24 gw: 172.16.4.1

Site 2:(physical server)

Server 2: 10.2.0.2/16 gw:10.2.0.1,

                  172.16.5.1/24

client : 172.16.5.3/24 gw: 172.16.5.1

Site 3:

Server 3: 10.3.0.2/16 gw:10.3.0.1,

                  172.16.6.1/24

client : 172.16.6.3/24 gw: 172.16.6.1

Site 4:(physical server)

Server 4: 10.4.0.2/16 gw:10.4.0.1,

                  172.16.7.1/24

client : 172.16.7.3/24 gw: 172.16.7.1

VPN Links Dhcp range for vpn clients

site1-site2,site1-site3,site1-site4 (172.16.100.1-172.16.100.10)

site2-site1,site2-site3,site2-site4 (172.16.101.1-172.16.101.10)

site3-site1,site3-site2,site3-site4 (172.16.102.1-172.16.1020.10)

site4-site1,site4-site2,site4-site3 (172.16.103.1-172.16.103.10)

Ps: I am using Vmware 5.0 for the scenario.

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise VM's losing connection to Active Directory
Hello,

I have five images of Windows Werver 2003 Enterprise on VMWare ESXi in a
MS Windows Active Directory Domain. The host is a Dell R900, and the domain controllers are physical machines on the network.

Four of these machines keep losing their connection to the domain.

In the application event viewer log, there are a lot of 'USERENV' Event 1053 errors stating:
'Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (Not enough storage is available to complete this operation. ).
Group Policy processing aborted.'

When this occurs I cannot RDC into the servers because the RPC server is not available.
It is my understanding that since the RPC server uses a network account, it will not start correctly if it cannot
authenticate agianst the domain controllers. Therefore this behavior is to be expected if the client cannot connect to AD.

When this happens I can RDC into the client as the LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR. I can ping both of our domain
controllers. The firewall is not enabled on the clients nor on the domain controllers. 'gpupdate /force' results in success.

There is 4096 MB of ram and plenty of disk space allocated to these client machines. Perfmon indicates that the machines
are not using up all of the allocated resources.

Has anyone else experienced client machines unable to find the user or computer name- effectively losing the domain?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Windows Server 2008 R2, No NIC installed

Hi All

I have ESX3.5 servers 32bit, and am going to be running Windows server 2008 R2 64bit servers on them.

The hardware supports this and I have turned on the VT on the processors.

Problem is that the NIC driver isn't being installed even after the newest download of VMTools has been installed.

I have got this to work by manually installing the NIC driver "VMware PCI Ethernet Adapter" I get a warning informing me that the driver isn't signed and as so it isn't recommened that i use it.

Assumption: as it's not signed windows will not automatically install it?? If so why hasn't it been signed??

As part of the testing to get this to work we also installed Windows Server 2003 64bit we haven't had any luck with the NIC on this. only Adapter on the server is and AMD 8111. Is there any way I can get hold of the driver files for the VMware NIC?

Thank you for taking time to read this..

Any help is much appreciated

VM BIOS problem with Altiris deployment

Hi,

I need to be able to deploy VMs using Altiris 6.9 The problem I have is that the VM BIOS is not set to PXE boot first (by default), it's fine for the first boot as it will have nothing on its virtual hard drive and so will boot PXE and find the deployment server, however, when it reboots during the build process it tries to boot on the hard drive but there's no OS on it at that point and so it fails.

I need to be able to set the boot order in the BIOS for all future VMs as a default, not change it on an individual basis - I know I could define and save an NVRAM file and change the vmx file to reference this one but I really need to change the default NVRAM that ESX creates - is there any way to do this?
Which Virtual Machine to Import

I have installed & updated my Fusion software & now I am ready to import the Parallels virtual machine. Would it be Boot Camp or Windows XP?

It appears that bootcamp has installed and it is running a different machine than the parallels. Is it okay to go ahead & import the Parallels Virtual Machine or do I need to uninstall the boot camp first?
SUSE 10sp2 templates

Hello,

I'm hoping to get some direction regarding the best way of creating a suse linux enterprise server 10sp2 template. I understand the general workflow for template creation. What I don't understand, is how to get the customizations, specifically network, to work properly instead of creating a second interface where neither works. However, if there's a document that gets more in depth regarding the best practices for prepping a linux guest for creating a flexible template, I'd love to see that as well.

CentOS5.3 & enhanced vmxnet not initialising
Is there a trick to getting enhanced vmxnet NIC to work with centOS 5.3 after installing vmware tools. I'm running vmware tools 3.5.0 build 123630 but after patching the machine and restarting my nic didn't start up. I removed it, rebooted, cleared out the network configurations and rebooted before adding the NIC back into the vm but now can't get the nic back in so the OS sees it.

Would someone be willing to help troubleshoot my enhanced vmxnet problem after helping me get CentOS to see it again?

Keyboard Force Memory Dump
I have a problem with one of my VM's.

It's a VM with a guest OS of Windows 2003. We use it as a gateway server for Terminal Services.

The problem is that every now and then (3 times yesterday) the server hangs. It still responds to Ping, but the likes of Remote Desktop, Computer Manager and PS tools either hang on an hour glass or just hang.

Is there a way I can force an OS memory dump on a VM?

Right-Cntrl + Scroll Lock + Scroll Lock should work on a standard Windows 2003 server, but doesn't appear to do so within a VM (uses a patch detailed in MS KB 244139 and uses the Kbdhid.sys (i8042prt.sys) driver).

[HELP] Physical box can't ftp Linux(it's a VMware guest OS, shutdown iptables, ping successfully), they are in same network section (10.10.10.0/24)
Please have a look at my problem:

On Windows2003 ---- hostname:win03, physical NIC is 10.10.10.0/24, using DHCP get ip: 10.10.10.10, gateway is 10.10.10.1, firewall shutdown

The Windows2003 have been installed a VMware Workstation, the VMware Workstation network use bridge.

Install a RedHat53 on the VMware Workstation, hostname: rh53，use DHCP and get IP: 10.10.10.20(10.10.10.0/24), gateway is 10.10.10.1, iptables has been shutdown, vsftpd is running.

On win03 can ftp login the vsftpd on RedHat53 successfully as well as ping command.

Why other physical box (windows2003, firewall shutdown, 10.10.10.30) can ping rh53 successfully but can not ftp log in rh53 ?

tcpdump can't catch any ftp package from other physical box.

Thank you very much ~~~

VMWare server console unresponsive
VMWare server console, version 1.0.8

Running on Windows 2003 host, quad core, 16 gigs ram

running three or four virtual machines each assigned 3 gigs ram, 1 cpu.

VMs running Windows 2003

Machines fire up just fine, execute programs just fine. Until...

I am running a program called Accuzip which is an address validation application written in Foxpro. The application runs however when it is finished running the VM is locked up tight. Clicking anything inside of the vm does eventually work, but will take tens of minutes to respond. Try to close the Accuzip application, takes ten minutes (not timed, just a guess). Click the start button, takes several minutes to even draw the start menu. Go to the desktop, takes 15 seconds to draw each icon on the desktop. If I manage to get the Start / shutdown clicked, it takes 20 minutes to 1/2 hour to actually shut down. "Logging off" will stay up for 15 minutes,"shutting down the machine" takes 15 minutes etc.

The VM (Windows 2003) does eventually shut down but it will take a full 20-30 minutes. As I write this two of three VMs have finally shut down. The third is shutting down, the VM screen is gray (desktop gone) and yet I can still ping that machine.

If I click the shutdown button in the server console it clicks (depresses) but it does nto shut down the vm. In fact as I write this, I have three VMs, two of which have finished shutting down. The red shutdown button in the server console is depressed for those two vms. If I click on the third, the shutdown button is not depressed. It looks like the shutdown button state for each vm is stored somewhere but the button is never released.

It almost appears as if the vmware console is giving host time slices to each vm once every 5 seconds or so, if you understand what I mean. The VMs respond like a slowly moving glacier, eventually doing something but ...

I have been dealing with this forever. Accuzip is the reason that I run these VMs and I cannot copy the result files off the VMs until I shut down the VMs and start them up again at which point they run normally again. But even shutting down the VMs is an hour long struggle.

HELP!

VMware does not close when Windows Server 2003 Standard shuts down

I have been using VMware for some time with Windows 2000 Professional. Recently I upgraded all of my developer tools from Visual Studio 2003 Professional to Visual Studio 2008 Professional. VS2008 does not work in Windows 2000, so I had to upgrade to Windows 2003 Server. However, now the VM guest will not close when I shut down that WS2003 machine. I get a gray screen and it just sits there forever. When I go to Troubleshoot -> Power off and quit, it closes just fine. And when WS2003 boots back up it never complains that it was shut down prematurely.

Why isn't it shutting down by itself like W2000P did?

Note: Using Ubuntu 9.04 as host, and VMware Player 2.5.3 build-185404.
