Update Manager plugin not registering with client

I just recently upgraded my environment from ESX 3.5 U4 with vCenter 2.5 U5 to vSphere U1. I upgraded VUM to 4.0 as well during the upgrade. Now, when I connect to vCenter with the VIClient I am unable to get the VUM plugin to become active. It shows up in the list of available plugins and when I click the install link it installs the plugin, goes to 100% and then goes right back to available status, just like it looked before the install. VUM itself seems to be running as it is download updates, but the plugin cannot be registered correctly with the client for some reason.

I have rebuilt the environment from the ground up except for my vCenter database as well as installing the client on other machines and uninstalling VUM and manually deleting the directories on the client. No dice.

If anyone has any ideas of what the logical next step would be, please drop me a line!
Computers can't logon to domain after rebalancing
We are facing some weird problem after rebalancing virtual machines - at the end of the process the machines can't logon to the domain (Windows error message - can't find domain). Manually logon to each machine and re-join it to the domain solves the problem, but, well, you know...

Any idea? We are uisng version 3.5.

VMware View Upgrade?
Hi

I have been using View 3 for a while and have a good working setup, providing desktop to thin clients.

It has become a requirement to move my current physical severs onto my Vmware setup, but according to the EULA the View bundle is for Desktop use only.

What would i need to upgrade to allow me to run server workloads and still be covered under the view licence and not breaking the EULA.

I release that something might need to be purchased or upgraded.

Also i relise that a whole new set of licences and / or hardware may need to be purchased

feature comparison between View3 and View4
Hello,

I am seeking a document which can describe new features of View4 and it's comparison with Vmware View3.

Infact my major concern is to address Soft phones issues, becasue we were unable to use bi-directional voice in view3. I know this issue is more or less related to RDP 6.0 which doesn't support sound upstream and microsoft has catered this issue in RDP 7.0. But again there may be alot of enhancements related to this problem.

Thanks in Advance
The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available

Hey all - Admittedly, I'm new to the VMWare View environment so forgive my ignorance. The problem that I'm having involves a small virtual pool that was recently setup at my company. There are two Virtual Connection Managers (VCM) but there is not a load balancer between them yet. The thin clients are manually pointed to either VCM-01 or VCM-02 to establish a connection. After receiving calls about issues logging in, here is what I've observed:

Certain users can only log into one of the VCM's. For instance, I can log into the webportal on VCM-01 as a certain user and I will receive the "The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available" message. However, I can log into the VCM-02 webportal as that user and it allows access with no issues. Other users can log into both VCM's without a problem.

Does anyone understand why this would happen? I don't believe it's an entitlement issue...the entitlements are pointing to a security group which contains every user.

Thanks for the help,
Start view client silent
We have been testing VMWare view extensively to run on a kiosk type configuration. Thanks to the very informative posts here, we are able to auto start the client to log on, select a image from the pool and log itself on the view server without interaction from the user.

I had been looking at the options available when starting the view client app from the guest pc, i could not find any mention of having it start silent. Is this option available in starting the client? We would like to "hide" the windows that come up when the app start (ie, view log on screen, etc.)

Has anyone figured out a way within the start up option for view client to do this?

Thanks

Office 2007 is halting VDI (Memory consumption issue?) - Suggestions for troubleshooting issue?

It seems that when our end-users do a lot of copying+pasting when using PowerPoint 07, Excel 07, or Word 07, it stores directly in the Office Clipboard (it stores up to 24 items), and this causes their VDI Workstation to freeze up. Essentially, their taskbar becomes inactive, but they can still (slowly) navigate through Windows Explorer. My current resolution is just to end the OFFLB.exe or Office application process (taskkill /PID ### /F) so they can continue with their work.

However, this is just one scenario of memory consumption that happens. This also occurs when using this free graphics viewer called irfanview to resize an image, or crop it, etc. Also happens when navigating through open windows in Windows Explorer.

I guess I would like recommendations on how to tackle this issue.

I thought it might have been a memory balloon issue as referenced in these two articles:

http://www.vi3book.com/index.php/articles-mainmenu-62/mgmt-and-monitoring-mainmenu-68/96-memory-behavior-when-vm-limits-are-set

http://www.van-lieshout.com/2009/04/esx-memory-management-part-1/

I guess it wasn't. So, I guess I'm rather clueless on how to tackle this issue since it could be a lot of things. Any tools or tips would be great

Our production environment is not using VMWare View. However, we are using Virtual Center 2.5 and VDI.

We have about 40+ Windows XP VMs right now, with essentially the same template (VMware Virtual Platform):

CPU = Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5345 @ 2.33 Ghz x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~2333 Mhz

Memory = 512 MB of RAM

<strike>Total Physical Memory = 512.00 MB; Available Physical Memory = 117.37 MB; Total Virtual Memory = 2.00 GB; Available Virtual Memory = 1.96 GB; Page File Space = 1.22 GB; Page File = C:\pagefile.sys</strike>

HDD = 10 GB (VMware Virtual Disk SCSI Disk Device)

SCSI and RAID controllers = LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series, w/1020/1030

Display Adapter = VMware SVGA II

IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers = Intel (r) 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE IDE Controller, and Primary IDE Channel

He is able to connect to the Internet and access our VPN, but when he hits the View Portal and tries to Authenticate, he gets " Login Form has expired. Please Try again". I had him clear his IE cache, but that did not help.
Problems when i try to log on to a virtual desktop using VMware View 3.1.2

Hello, I need advice or help on the following:
In my workplace has been implemented the VMware VDI and use HP Thin Client terminals, where the operating system of the Thin Client is Windows XP Embedded in Spanish, I have the version 3.1.2 of Vmware View, my pool is non persistent and i have two virtuals for the pool. I get the following problem when entering through a Thin Client for the view, when I select the pool of connections should I give a virtual but I get the message "timed out" but in Spanish and is rare because the view is in English and also i have two virtuals free, so i can take one of them because the pool is non persistent but i don´t understand.
Someone knows what is this type of error, for a moment I thought it was a problem related tio the DHCP of the thin client that has not resolved the names, so I edit the file host of the Thin Client, but after a few tests I receive that error again.

Accessing manual pool internally and externall
Hi

I have a View 3.1 infrastructure with a Security server for external users and a Connection server for internal users. Unfortunately I have a few users who need to access their machine either internally when in the office or externally when working away from the office.

Initial solution was to create a small pool of manual desktops that can be accessed both internally and externally. Initial testing appeared to work. However I now appear to only be able to connect from one side and see waiting for agent on one of the view management servers.

Within the registry key HKLM\Software\VMWareInc\VmwareVDM\Agent\Configuration there two options for Broker & initial Broker ?

Is there anyway of configuring this registry key to toggle settings

regards

Exchange 2003 System manager on VIrtual XP Client

Hello,

I am trying to install the Exchange2003 System Manager tools on a Virtual (XP) PC.

I have installed the tools in the same way as I do on physical XP cients but on the virtualised PC message tracking always fails with:

Access denied

Facilitr: Win32

ID no: 80070005

!file:///C:/DOCUME~1/M14795~1.SOL/LOCALS~1/Temp/moz-screenshot-3.jpg!Exchange System Manager

Both machines are members of the domain and have the same group policy applied.

Message tracking on the physical PC works without any problem.

Does anyon have any suggestions how I can fix this?
Printing from Virtual Desktop to Novell printers
Hi all,

I have View 3.1.2.

To connect to Virtual Desktops I use View Client installed on Windows XP SP3 machines. On that client are defined some printers via Novell.

I wonder if Thinprint integrated in View is able to redirect the Novell printers to Virtual Desktops (which have Novell Client installed), and if yes, if I need to install printers drivers or not.

Thanks
Healthcare/Hospital systems and VMware View

Good evening. Does anyone know of any healthcare systems in the Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and/or Columbus, OH areas that are in the process of or have recently completed implementing VMware View? I work for a hospital system here in Cleveland, OH and would be very interested in how similar organizations in comparable markets have fared with this.
Many thanks!

Recovery from ligth shutdown
Hi there,

I've implemented a Site with 60 VM's 6 Servers (DNS, DOMAIN, DHCP...) and 54 VDI workstation with WinXP,

I've 3 ESXservers + Storage SAN + SAI

I have been making some disaster recovery test, and i'd like to know, which are the RTO (Recovery Time Objectives)
to have the plataform ready ?

I've measured the RTO making a system 0 (cut off the ligth) and i have not the system ready until 30 minutes.

Is it too much time? or is it a good RTO time ?

As far as i know it isn't a good time but a need another experiences.

Best regards
adding view connection server

hello,

i currently have a beta environment configured with my view connection server running as a vm on the same host as all of my virtual desktops. performance has been less than ideal. furthermore, my users are now reporting that when they intiate a login they receive one of two error messages stating that:

a) "The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available. Please try again later." OR

b) " All available desktop sources for this desktop are currently busy. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your systems administrator."

i'm thinking that if i add a physical view connection server this should resolve the issue. looking for confirmation on that and also the steps involved in adding a second connection server and/or replacing my current conncetion server all together.

PCoIP Client Auto-login to View 4?

Hello All,

I've got someone at Teradici looking into this for me as well. Does anyone know if a PCoIP hardware client like the Wyse P20 or Samsung 930ND will have the capability to auto-login to View 4? We have a number of public use endpoints that automatically login to a Windows desktop session when we power them on and want to duplicate that functionality with PCoIP.

Thanks,
It says "no changes have been made", but I now no longer have a directory for the View Composer in \Program Files\VMware and I'm pretty sure there was one prior to the attempted upgrade.

Vmware View server and clients in a cross forest scenario ?

Hello !
Have tried to search if there is any answers regarding my question but haven't found any...if there are please redirect me to that/those answers =)

My question is if it is possible to deploy one VMware View server in Forest A and deploy View clients to Forest B (besides deploying View clients to forest A). The forests will have a forest trust between them and appropriate DNS-settings. The reason why there are two forest is due to security reasons and different organizational structures, but the customer in question would like to be able to (re)use the Vmware View server that they already have deployed in forest A, and have it deploying View clients to users in forest B.
Recompose Operation - Most VM's staying on

Gidday guys, I might be missing something obvious, but with a persistant pool we have set up here we're seeing on recompose operations nearly all machines being left on at the tail end of.

The provisioning settings are min 3 / max 40 / available 2, VM's set to power off when not in use, immediate logoff after disconnect and a 7 day OS refresh.

This isn't a massive problem at the moment as it's sort of a live trial, but we're not far off going fully live as all other things are working beautifully, and will be shifting to better hardware with a much larger pool, and this is where we see potential resource problems.

To give an example the pool was recomposed 3 - 4 days ago, there are currently no VM's in use, yet of the 33 machines that have been generated so far in the pool there are 13 "powered on" (where I'd expect to see only 2 not yet allocated VM's), and when initially the pool was recomposed nearly all were on and stayed on, they only seem to be shutting down after "their" user logs into them and logs out to trigger the "power off when not in use". Our concern is when we move to hardware that we expect to be able to run 80 - 90 VM's concurrently, but we expect 300-400ish users initially, that these 300 - 400 VMs are not going to shut themselves back down after a recompose and severely chew into the resources available.

Anyone got any ideas on this one?

Can't connect to desktop on View server over the Internet
Hello, I'm stumped on this and hope someone can help. I have a View environment setup (ESXi/vCenter/View) and everything works fine if I'm connecting on the same LAN network segment (all machines on the 192.168.x.x network etc). However, when I try to access the desktop across the Internet I can not get things to work. I can connect to the View server, log in there, get a listing of the available desktops and when I go to connect nothing happens. On a HP t5145 the Thinconnect manager switches to active, on a live cd (thinstation.org) the connection never occurs- stays stuck on connecting to the desktop. After a long while the message is the desktop has unexpectedly disconnected (never displayed a desktop)

If I watch the desktop I'm trying to connect to, an XP machine, I can see the local user get logged off when I try and connect from the thin client across the Internet. Everything is flowing to the VM, not sure where things are getting messed up after this. The firewall for this network shows nothing getting dropped/blocked, 443 is forwarded to the View server. I've tried direct connect option on the View server, FQDN and IP's for both the external address on the View server and the thin clients. I've setup a different View server with no change. Logs on the VM machine look ok from what I can tell, I've ran packet captures on the View and vCenter server, seems ok. Had some TCP or IP checksum errors corrected with disabling the offload options on the NIC.

Works on a local loop, everything works logging into the View and displaying available desktops, local user logged out on the VM but the desktop is never truly connected/displayed.

Any help greatly appreciated!!!

Logon scripts on VMWare View 3.1.2

Hello.

We have been using Citrix to present desktops to clients for about 3 years now. We have several group policy objects that are in used based on the container that users are in. In these GPOs we do things like restrict control panel access, access to the registry, remove common program group, etc. We also run login scripts that map particular drives and copy down some ini files and run a process that reads keys into the local HKCU based on an extract that we do on logout (to save user settings).

This all works well in Citrix.

We are testing a VMware View 3.1.2 implementation.

Using similar GPOs (though brand new, as the test environment is in its own new domain), we are able to restrict the desktop, copy the ini files down, read the values out of the registry on log out, read values into the registry on login and map network drives.

About 50% of the time, the login process works without a hitch. The users map the drive letters, the registry entries get read in (we can see this using a verbose command) and the world is golden.

The other 50% of the time, it looks like the GPO is not read in. I re enabled access to the start menu and access to the command prompt and even when the GPOs are not applied, gpresult shows that the correct GPOs are applied and in the correct order.

We are using a mandatory profile for standard login.

Any thoughts on why the login scripts don't run sometimes?

The client machines are VMs of Windows XP Pro spk3, 32 bit.. The servers are 64 bit Windows 2003, SPK2, Using GPMC to modify GPOs.

I can a attach HTML outputs of the GPOs and text of the login scripts if required.

VM ACE vs VDI Offline desktop

Can someone highlight the differances between VM ACE vs VDI offline desktop? We are looking to deploy encrpyted sessions to workstations. Like to maybe keep a key logger from getting keystrokes inside an offline desktop?
Issue with single sign on on SOME desktop pools
Hallo

We have a client with VMware View 3.1.2 installed. It is running on an ESX3 update4 environment. The client has noticed that after a patch, update or after adding a new program or software, that the single sign on does not work anymore. If you disconnect from the VM and reconnect to it, it works 100% fine, but not as soon as you connect to a "fresh" VM. If the VMware View agent on the base is reloaded, this problem disappears, but the client would not like to do this each and every time.

Any suggestions or possible starting points for troubleshooting?

Unfortunately, I must add the Novell client on my VDI sessions and I was if there was a way to login once and have View pass my AD/edirectory credentials to the Novell client? I can get it to work on a thin client with the View client installed and some reg hacks, but what about someone using View Web access? Is there a way for someone to use the web front end and have credentials passed to the novel client so they just login one time? Currently they have to login to View (Web) then the Novell window prompts them to login again. Anyone know if this is even possible? Thanks
Wyse devices connected to a Vmware 3.1.1 view server are getting random lock ups and odd errors in the event log. All of which I am unable to track down. I have adjusted the TCPTimeout in the wnos.ini file but this has not resolved my issue. Any ideas?

Hi all.

I made a big mistake with my security server (didn't back it up) and now i have a bad server. Can't boot teh server because of a stop erro and now i have to rebuild it. I think i have everything done. Copied the config file to the appropriate directory, made all ip addresses the same and istalled the software. When i try to go to either the IP addrss or the FQDN, i can get to the login screen, login with my credentials but after that i get teh following messages...A connection to the View Server could not be established. and The connection to the View Connection Server is not started. That is it. What am i missing? I can login just fine inside teh office but can't externally. Any help is appreciated. I am running Views 3.1.2. Thanks.
Vmware View hangs when discovering VC
hi guys

Sometimes (not all the time) when I am working with Vmware View Version 3.1.1 and adding new desktops my View Servers hangs when I press the Next Button,

it hangs here, you select you VC server I click next and Vmware View just stops there the only way to get it back is rebooting the Vmware View Services on windows or rebooting the physical server but this takes all my View sessions down so my users get impacted.

I added the screen when I got stuck

any idea what could be causing this issue?

thanks a lot

VMware View in a POS environment
I am thinking of deploying a POS system of five virtual desktops using VMware View on a centralized server. These 5 virtual desktops will need to be separate and independent images but interact with each other through the POS software.

I was wondering if anyone has had some experience doing this and what setup seems to work. I am aiming towards a more efficient business practice as well as saving money by using thin clients and a centralized server.

Thank You,

Hi,

I have a HP t5735 with Debian Linux installed. The VMware compatibilty list shows that this device works only with ThinPro OS. I looked arround on the web but haven't found any image. I woudl ike to use this option as the open client does not support USB properly and HP says it will work.

Can someone help me and direct me in the correct direction to ge this device running with VMware View 3.1?

I'm trying to publish View through ISA2004 but keep getting error and from external cant even get to the View Connection broker webpage.

On the ISA server when monitoring the traffic I see that traffic going to the security server on 443 as a connection opened.

In the browser I get the following message.

Error Code: 403 Forbidden. The server denied the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Contact the server administrator. (12202)
How are you licensing your VDI projects? FPP or VECD

Just curious because I am not Microsoft SA and Full Package Product (FPP) seems to be alot cheaper in the long run... But technically if you go FPP you cannot Vmotion or enable HA/DRS on your cluster because the FPP is tided to the intial host it was spun up on... VECD, not being SA customer is like $110 per year per device licenses for the first 3 years then $30 per year after that.
When recomposing our Vista 32bit business machines with a new image, we are suddenly getting a error during recompose: "Interrupted during LDAP operation"

The machine remains in a powered down state. Manually starting the machine, it boots up, then reboots and everything seems to be normal, as if the recompose was finished okay, but the task in the View Administrator still showsa task of "Recompose" with a status of "ready", and still shows the old base image description. Any ideas?
Access to VM guest console
Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas on how to connect, through a broker, direct to the console of the VM guest (XP) rather than an RDP session?

We have a range of virtual machines running locally on user desktops which are used to support our customers over various VPN solutions, some of which are not split tunneled.

I want to centralise the virtual desktops onto our ESX kit but can't find a way to mimc console access to the guests; as soon as the user connected to the machine over RDP establishes the VPN they lose the RDP session. I've tried multiple NICs, one for the VPN adapter to bind to and one for VMWare View but I can't find any way to tell it which adapter to bind to.

The best solution I've managed so far is to use Leostream Connect and redirect though the web interface to the "remote console URL", but this is far from ideal.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Have the connection server and RSA servers configured, I can authenticate successfully while the primary RSA appliance is powered on. We get an error at the view login page when the cable is pulled, and no activity in the logs on the secondary RSA.
View Security Server loses communications to View Manager

We've had nothing problems with our View install. We started out with a Thin Client deployment that went down in very expensive flames. Since then we have regrouped and tried to salvage some bit of its use. Attached is a drawing of our planned environment. It is mostly in place. However, we don't have the F5 load balancers in yet, nor do we have any of the load balancing of security or management servers for View.

Randomly the View Security Server (VSS from now on) will lose connectivity to the View Manager Server (VMS). When we attempt to connect from the outside, it will time out. I can telnet to the server on 80 and 443, but the page never comes up. When I attempt to connect internally (the URL is the same but external DNS resolves it to our VSS and internal DNS resolves it to the VMS) it works just fine. From the VSS I can telnet to the VMS on all needed ports, so I am pretty certain that it isn't a firewall issue. Sometimes a restart will fix this, sometimes just testing with telnet will fix it.

I've worked with Vmware support and sent them log file after log file. There was never and real fix. It just started working again and we closed the case. It is not working now. Anybody else seen this issue or have any tips for me?

HID (bar code scanner) problem in vmware view 3
Hello

I'd connected a bar code scanner to a thin client (hp windows CE 6) and redirect usb port to a vm (XP SP3) with rdp. I see that the bar code is installed in the device manager (human interface device) and everythings look find but when I use it, it write strange characters (é$£...).

Then I try to connect the bar code to a anywhereUSB box.

Like with rdp, the HID looks find in the vm but when I use it nothning is writing.

I looked KB Article: 1011600 but in the registry of the vm I don't have "HKLM\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\USB\" but "HKLM\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\plugins\wsnm\usb"

got a idea?

Users can't logon, "error in the RPC receive loop"
Occasionally enough to be annoying, a user can't connect to their desktop. The Windows Application event log contains the following error:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: VMware VDM
Event Category: VMware VDM
Event ID: 104
Date: 15/10/2009
Time: 07:32:51
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: BUAR-VM001
Description:
Error in the RPC receive loop: RpcIn: Unable to send

I can't find anything at all from googling this. Has anyone seen it before or know of any reason why this could be happening?

It's very frustrating for our users as it means they can't do anything until someone from IT support reboots the VM, which seems to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated!

View Security Server
Hi

I am in the process of creating a View 3.1.2 Build 188088 on ESX3.5 U4 with VC 2.5 U4.

I can create and access XP Desktop VM's from the local 192.168 Lan based Connection Server. The issue is when connecting to the Security Server over the Internet

The Security server is a W2K3 server with two NICs.. The internal facing is on the 192.168.1 subnet and the external facing is on the 10. subnet. For testing purposes I have disabled the Windows firewall. The extrnal firewall is on a 92.x.x.x subnet.

I have tried various configurations for the setting the External URL to point to the IP address of the firewall but I get a message "The View Connection Server connection failed. The View Connection Server request timed out"

We have set a rule on the firewall for all traffic on the 92.x.x.x to be Natted to the 10. subnet.

Any ideas would be aapreciated
View Manager sizing if it is a VM and not physical server
Hi,

Based on the manual, 1 View Manager (run on physical server with 2 CPU) can support 1000 users.

Appreciate help on:

1. Is the above 2 cores or 2 sockets (which means 8 cores in Xeon 5500)?

2. If we run View Manager as a VM, how many desktop VMs (with 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, ample CPU in underlying ESX with Xeon 5500 chip) can it handle?

Thank you from Singapore
VMView - slow when accessed from Vista PC
Hello,

We are currently demoing VMWare View to provide desktops (via RDP) to certain users within our business for the purpose of testing our internal software. The desktops we are delivering are Windows XP.

The problem we are having occurs when a user logs on to the Win XP RDP from a Windows Vista PC - it runs so slowly that its almost unusable, however the same Win XP RDP runs perfectly when accessed from a Windows XP deskto. It seems like a very strange error because the all thephysical desktops are on the same network, RDP from a Vista desktopto a server works perfectly fine, plus the processing for the Win XP RDP should all be taking place on the server, not on the Vista physical desktop. Does anyone know of an issue or a resolution for this problem?

Regards,
Hello!

I have a small VMware View (newest 3.x Version) environment with one Connection Server and one Security Server in the DMZ.

How is it possible to create and entitle a specific poll only for the internal communication.
At this time all pools are the same from the internal connection with the Connection Server and from the Security Server.

I want to create a pool, entitle for specific user group and the user can only see this pool over the internal connection server and not over the security server.
View issue with thin clients - login -
hi guys

Product Versions:

ESX 3.5

View Manager and client 3.1

Few days ago we had our VMs around 120 in Port Group Testing and yesterday we changed it to Deployment VLAN ID 21.

Now some Thin clients don't loguin at the first time. I mean the user power on the Thin Client he has to log in to Active Directory(AD) to have access to his View Windows Image and load it.

But for some users they try to log to the AD and if fails andif they try few minutes later they can log in without problems.

What could be the issue? I was thinking that (I am home and I could not TS the issue) I need to change the View Server to that VLAN 35 since maybe some Clients are not connecting as they should to the View Server.

Any other idea?

thanks a lot
Pool empty but unable to connect
I have 5 computers that I am using to connect to a pool of 5 linked clones. It's a persistent pool.

The computers that are connecting to the pool of linked clones are WYSE terminals that are on rolling carts. The carts are connecting to the pool wirelessly. I have 5 carts, so I created a pool of 5 linked clones.

The first issue I am having is that I am constantly getting calls that one of the carts cannot connect because all of the linked clones are already in use. I only have 5 ID's that can connect to the pool and no one else would try to connect to them (they have no need or use to). But if I ask someone to log out of the cart, the cart that couldnt connect will connect but now the cart that was connected cant connect.

If I go into the Desktop Sources tab of the pool the only ID I see connected is my domain ID but I am not logged into any of the clones. BUT the other clones show no user connected even though there are connections. The user box is blank but I know the clones are connected to and in use. It seems like for some reason that at one time when I logged into one of the clones that VMview is not releasing the session even though I am not logged in.

As I said they are connecting wirelessly so I dont know if that has anything to do with it either since they do sometimes lose there connection for a coupld seconds.

Terminal services via View 3.1.1 - printer mapping issue
Hey guys,

wierd issue - in addition to using virtual desktops we have installed the view agent on terminal servers using the secure gateway/VDM to deliver desktops for external staff over SSL works like a charm, all was good until a recent upgrade to v3.1.1 due to the tunnel drop out issue. Now client printer mapping no longer works for our staff. If you connect direct via RDP to the terminal server bypassing view it still works but not via View. I m assuming that the upgrade to v3.1.1 has introduced something that has disabled client printer mapping? I ve read about thin print but not sure if this is the problem child or not?

Has anyone got any ideas on this? and if so is it possible to get client printer mapping going again as this is proving to be a real pain. BTW we are running Windows 2003 ts RC2 SP2

thanks in advance
VMware View Scenario and help
I am considering VMware View for the following scenario:

In VMware Workstation, I have a team of VM's that I run for a student lab exercise(Windows XP, Linux, Windows Server 2003 configured in a private network). I would like to create this same type of team in VMware View to provide this experience to 30 simultaneous users. Has anyone done this and would like to share their experience? Can I view a live demo of something like this? What type of network infrastructure do I need to provide a good user experience. I have heard about the up coming offering utilizing technology from VMware and Teradici, to develop PC-over-IP. Should I wait for this or is the current solution good start?
Using USB Redirect Feature for Scanning
Dear colleagues,
I have a question concerning scan-solutions with virtual desktops.

We use
1) Windows XP SP2 VMs hosted on VMware ESX, 4.0.0, 164009 => within the Company Network
2) VMware View Connection Server
3) VMware View Security Server => available on the Internet
4) VMware View Portal 3.1.2 build-188088
5) VMware View Client 3.1.2 build-188088 running on a Windows XP machine which is connected to a Kodak i1200 Scanner

The Windows XP machine 5) has access to VMware View Security Server 3) via Internet (and is not within the same Network as the hosted Windows XP SP2 VMs 1).
In the "vdm_client.adm"-file there is the entry:

POLICY !!RedirectPlugAndPlayDevices
EXPLAIN !!ExplainRedirectPlugAndPlayDevices
VALUENAME "RedirectPlugAndPlayDevices"
VALUEON true
VALUEOFF false
END POLICY

But the Kodak i1200 Scanner (ISIS-Driver installed on Host and on Virtual Client) is not recognized within the VM.
The ISIS-Driver supports sharing the scanner via network but - as already mentioned - the VM and the host do not see each other on the network.

Is there an easy way to make the local scanner available within the VM?
Do I have to add a policy to support this?

Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Are "logoff on disconnect" and "AllowDirectRDP" mutually exclusive?
Hi!

We have a VDM 2.x server sharing XP Desktops. One of the general settings is that the users should be logged off when disconnecting from VDM to free up sessions for other users.

As a precaution, should VDM be unavailable, we have enabled AllowDirectRDP on the VDM agent PCs.

However, if I have logoff on disonnect set to 'immediately' in the VDM pool definition, then as soon as I remote desktop to the IP of the VM, it logs me right out again.

Can I have both? Log out when disconnecting from VDM session, but allow direct RDP users to stay logged in?

GPO will not run first time I login to VDI desktop
Hi,

I have a problem I can't slove. Hoping for some ideas from you guys.

We've set up a VDI group that shall have a single application running when the user log on and when the application is closed, the user get logged out. The start of the application is controlled by a GPO in AD. My environment is a mix between Novell and Windows. We are using a novell Gina to login and the login is then passed through to windows and a login is preformed in a windows AD as well. The users get their novell-login, novell netshares etc, etc. The setup works OK except for one little thing.

First time I login with a new user to a new VDI-desktop it seems like the GPO that start my application will not run. Instead I'll get a full VDI-desktop. 2:nd time I login the GPO works and my application starts. OK, I thought it was because first time I login windows create a local user profile (domain\username). Maybe that's why it starts a desktop. Once I have a local profile the GPO will work. To confirm my theory I logged in to the console as administrator and removed the newly created local profiles. Next time I log in, a new profile will be created and it will fail my GPO to run again. Right? Guess what, it still works! My application kicks up and everything looks fine. Even thoue I had to create a new profile!? That ruines my theory.

Anyone has an idea what could cause my problem and how to solve it?

Is there anyway I can have this in a different location (i.e. under a subfolder from the datacenter root)?
VMWare view client v3.1.2, enable the shade disabled and playing movies
Hi,

When I connect using the view client (v3.1.2) from a thin client (XPe SP2) I connect fine and login to the network. When I play a video using media player file the speed and audio are both fine and work well. I changed the view_client.adm GPO setting - enable the shade - disabled so students would not minimize the display and see the XPe desktop (I will hide the shell once I have got past this problem using a guide within this forum and if the client is minimized it disappears and the student would lose their work). Now with the shade disabled, I login and go to play a movie file and media player starts to load and then the view client just closes and reveals the XPe desktop. If I then enable the shade everything works fine and the video plays.

Does anybody know how to stop this from happening?

Thanks for any input you can offer.

Powershell Script for Snapshot

We are using VMware View to assign XP Desktops via a persistent pool to a number of developers & testers. Once these users have finalised their activities they need the ability to regress their XP desktop to the original image (i.e. to commence next bit of development work). Unfortunately, there is nothing built-in the "View" product to provide users the permission to regress to an original image (unless using off-line desktops, which we are not).

If access is provided to "View Admin" users can regress to a previous image, but we don't want to do provide access to "View Admin". Neither do we want to provide access to "VirtualCenter" for any snapshots.

I'd like to ask whether anyone has written or know of a script that can snapshot a XP Desktop, when initially assigned to a specific user via VMware View? Or can provide a script that allows a user to snapshot their desktop? With regards to the latter we would like a method of allowing the user to define the snapshot name and take no more than 2 snapshots for a specific VM.

Similarly, a script is required to allow the user to regress their laptop to previous snapshot. Ideally, before regressing the snapshot a confirmation prompt would be handy after selecting the appropriate snapshot to regress.

Does this requirement sound feasible and has anyone previously implemented? Any alternative strategies/ideas also welcome.

We like the idea of virtualized desktops alot, but we keep running into a brick wall on 1 thing. We are a spoke and hub network accross T1 WAN links with 2 ESX hosts and a vCenter server running in the hub. Each location has standard desktop PC's and 1 Windows File Server. The brick wall is when we replace a desktop with a thin client device, the thin client now has to traverse back accross the WAN to the virtualized desktop, then back again just to open a file from the local file server. I've read about the bandwith requirements and RDP, we are cool there, but passing files accross the WAN will be just too much. I know the purpose of virtualizid desktops is to consolidate your storage to the central headquaters, but that wont happen overnight of us, the remote file servers will be in place for sometime.
HP Barcode Scanner
I need some help with how to setup a barcode scanner to push special characters (code 128) to View. We have an application that requires a barcode scanner and we need to run that application on our View solution. The scanner does connect USB, but it send over signals like it was a keyboard, so it doesn't connect to View through the USB connection. It is like the shiftkey isn't being sent with the barcode scanner.

On windows we get this when we scan:

@STOP

@START

But on View we get this:

2stop

2start

Can anyone help or have any ideas?
Shut down VMs fail to start via View
Hello everyone,

Earlier this week we ran into some interesting problems. As users attempted to start their VMs via View client (3.11 175957) the connections to machines that were turned off failed to spin up the VMs. Looking at Virtual Center we did not see the VMs start up at all nor did we see commands issued. It's as if VC was oblivious to the requests coming in. Machines that were already up, but logged out of connected to View just fine. We opened a case with VMware and supplid the reps with multiple logs which are still in the process of analysis.

Once we rebooted the Virtual Center (2.5 SP4) box, the problem appeared to go away. This may be a short term fix, but I'm certain that the problem will return.

My question to everyone is: Has this happened to you? If so, what was your solution?

Automatic USB Redirection within View Client v 3.1.2
Hi, I was wondering if the view client v3.1.2 can automatically connect a USB pen/Drive within the VM XP? I use thin clients in a college environment and it would be great if when they put in a USB pen/drive it would automatically connect to the VM first and not the thin client xpe. So I was wondering if there is a setting I have missed or a reg hack which can do this.

Many thanks for any input you can give.

Problems with Thinreg
I am having some problems with Thinreg registering THinapps from a CIFS share. Thinreg is running as a login script to register the thinapps and the start menu items appear, but the file associations are not working. if I run the login script or the thinreg commands manually again the file associations work mostly, but sometimes they still dont register.

has anyone seen this problem and found a fix?

VMware view maintaining sessions history?
Hi,

In VMware View admin web portal, I can see the number of active sessions for the desktops. However, does VMware View maintain its history of for how much duration what sessions were active in the past. Maybe the timestamp details for duration and number of active sessions, etc?

If it stores this history, how can we access it?

Thanks,
Installing View Composer 1.1 - Getting DB Connection Errors

Hello,

**added Sept 24 @9:16EST *** This is part of VMware View 3.1.2 - The Composer component version is 1.1.0-161885

I am trying to install View on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server running Virtual Center. When I go thruogh the VIew Composer Installation Wizard, I click ODBC DSN Setup. I walk through the configuration of my System DSN, and the test comes back successful. When I provide the wizard the very same DSN name and credentials, I get the following error: "an error occurred attempting to connect to the database".

The DB is on a separate server running SQL 2005 SP2. I am using SQL authentication, and the user viewcomposeruser has dbo_owner rights to the db. I can log into the SQL console with the viewcomposeruser successfully, but when I try to authenticate in the View Composer wizard, it fails, and logs an event on the SQL server's application logs (Login failed for user 'viewcomposeruser').

To complicate this, we had everything running during a quick and dirty install of View Composer and Connection server, just to see how it works. I did an uninstall of View Composer and am re-installing it so I can better document the process. I have deleted and recreated the viewcomposeruer SQL account and am using a new name for the database. I have also created a new DSN entry - tests successful everytime.

I have a ticket in with VMWare on this, but they have not been very responsive.

Any insight or advice on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

USB Redirect problem

We have a good number of Dell FX160 TCs and are using VMWare View (3.1.2) client and agent software to access the VMs. On a particular machine (my boss's actually), we are trying to get a blackberry to sync via USB. When we are connected to the VM and click on 'Connect USB Device' it shows the blackberry as listed, we click on it to activate the connection, and the OS installs the driver...only problem is that after we do this the device shows 'Not Present' next to it. It does not pull the device over to the VM, but does still show the mapped drive from the TC (local) to the VM (virtual). I have one of these too, and it works on my machine. I have uninstalled both the agent and the client software (all latest versions), reinstalled and that didn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

btw, is there a way to have all usb devices auto-connect so we don't have to check the devices to connect them? We have some finicky end users

View disk management confusion....
I'm beginning to understand desktop provisioning a bit better now,

I now know that when your "recompose" an image it creates a new replica disk. Assuming all VMs in the pool are using the same replica, do the old replica disks that aren't being used by any VM get automatiically deleted? I'm asking becasue it seems as if I have more replica disks that Pools.

What's an orphaned disk?

I read somewhere about commiting snapshots, what is that, how is it down? Is this related to temp disks/folders i see virtual center?

I'm asking all of this becasue my SAN storage seemd to drop quickly after i started playing with VIEW

How to print screen of View Client session into local clipboard ?
My wife is making training material for a system accessed using VMWare View Client but ALT-PrntScrn doesn't put the screen shot of the remote system into her local clipboard (XP).

Is there a different hot key combination that would allow this? Or has it been disabled at the server end?

I'm assuming that the screen shot is going into the remote clibboard but that system doesn't have any applications into which you can paste the shot and then transfer it to her local system. The client has no printing or USB capabilities and we don't have access to the IT department that put this together (or manuals!).

Grateful for any ideas..............
Capacity planning
I guess, i am nr. 2^64 asking this question, but i think my requiernments are a bit different.

I have ~160 Clients and would plan for 200. 99% of all clients would be school-PC, which means that I have many different office applications (MS-Office, OpenOffice, medical practice software in different types e.g. veterinarian plus many others. No video, CAD what so ever). A client disk is currently using 40-60 GB of software. Ideally all clients would have an identical set of installed applications. At the begin of every lesson (90min), about 120 PC/VMware-sessions would have to be started simultaneously.

I read and understood that i can run 4-6 clients per core, so a host with 40 cores would do. Also I think i have to use the premier package as it provides linked clones. My idea is to run two ESX-servers in hot standby and use a shared iSCSI or SAN storage. I did not find any information of how many space is used per linked clone. There does already exist a storage for user data, so i know how much space is used there. If a linked clone uses only a few megabytes i could buy small and fast disks otherwise i would have to take bigger but slower ones.

Aside from the information that HA is possible with ESX i could not find much. Is there a licence server? What happens to the licences when one server crashes, does the second one get them automaticall?

Thanks a lot
Hi all, we are installing 6 new ESX 3.5 U4 servers in order to implement VMware View.

But we already have 4 ESX 3.5 U4 servers in a single cluster, and 1 VC 2.5 U4 to manage them.

This existing cluster contains customer virtualized servers.

I wonder if we could manage both existing and new ESX servers under the same VCenter. One cluster with existing ESX servers, and a second cluster with new ESX servers.

I suppose we should merge licenses to generate a new single license file, but i don't know if this is possible or even legal.
Corrupt Pools?
I've got six pools of nonpersistent clones drawing on five parentVMs. Two pools draw from the same VM. None of the parentVMs offer more than 64 images and I have over 20GB of space free on the LUN that serves them. Earlier today, out of the blue, my largest pool emptied itself. After that, none of the pools would provision additional clients. They kept however many were available at the time the large pool emptied, but despite most being less than half of their max, they would not provision additional vms. There was no problem deleting the images when the users logged out. I restarted the broker and the VIC server, but there was no change. I tried disabling provisioning and the pool itself, then reenabling them one by one. No change. I edited all of the pools, increasing the min, the max, and the available by one each, then clicking Finish. That worked for three of the pools, including the largest one. The other three I had to fall back on creating new pools with the same settings and the same parentVMs. Those provisioned fine.

The only error messages I see in Events are related to two instances of duplicate AD names which appear to have happened right around when the large pool emptied. Since I have all pools set to stop provisioning on error, I expected the large pool to stop, but not to empty, or to lock up all provisioning for all other pools.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what could have happened? I'm at a loss. I got View going last month and it has been absolutely smooth up until this afternoon

Need to change default permissions for the user data disk

Apparently, the default permissions for the user data disk does not allow standard users (e.g. users that are not local admins) to create files in the root of the drive. While this is probably a good thing, it doesn't mirror the configuration of the D: drive of our physical computers. As a result, numerous systems management scripts are failing as they write temp files here (yes, I'll have to flog the script writer, but that's for another day!). I'm pretty sure I can use the Windows utility xcacls.exe to make the change, but I'm not sure how to get this to happen at provisioning time. Essentially, I need the command to run exactly one time and to run with elevated privileges. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cisco SoftPhones and VDI
Hello,

One of my telco customer wants to adopt Virtual Desktop Infrastructure for their contact centre, though I already have worked on a contact center enviornment using wyse thin clients with vmware VDI. but here the problem would be the cisco softphones. I have heard that softphones integration is a real challange because RDP doesn't support voice upstream. I also have view an old thread initiated in 2006 i guess. I believe there are alot of enhancements occurs after this, so there may be a solution to cater for Softphones in VDI enviornment.

One handy solution came to my knowledge is that If I would install softphone utility on thin-client instead of VM, but this can only work with thin clinets having XPe OS not with thinOS, right ??
Grid pattern showing up when using View to connect to vm's
I'm using View 3.1.1 and View Client 3.1.1 and the lastest agent as well. When I connect via the thick or web client the vm shows a grid pattern. I found an old post relating this problem to VMware Workstation but the fix they suggest doesn't work with ESX hosted vm's. I've uninstalled every VMware piece on my computer and reinstalled to no avail. I've used an older version of the View client (3.1 - Thinapped) with no better success.

Anyone else run in to this yet? Check the pic attached to see what i'm talking about.

View Portal - User Cannot Login
We have a view 3.1.2 enviornment. Sending a user to the portal to obtain a desktop and login they get a message that the client cannot be installed. they have never had the client installed but don't have admin rights. does anyone know what rights they need to have to let the view portal install the activex control?
VB and crystal report Required Domain admin rights to run under vmware vdi
Hi ,

we have implemented vmware view 3.1 for desktop virtualization on esx 3.5 update 3 for software development purpose.

we are using different different desktop set fot java and vb development vdi . for vb develop ment we are using vb 6.0 with crystal report 8 and toad and etc. everything was installed perfectly and running fine in base desktop.but when we deliverd vdi from that base desktop we found that crystal report and visual basic require domain admin rights to run smoothly. we already provide user with local admin group but thease two application shows some error while execution from strtup menu.please tell me do we require domain admin rights to run some application ( development ) from vmware vdi.

Local Thin Client Printers and View 3.1
I am currently deploying a 50+ user VDI pilot and I would like to know how others are handling locally attached USB printers on Wyse Thin Client running ThinOS.

We have Wyse TCX USB Virtualizer which is passing through the USB printer directly to the Virtual Machine however it is prompting our users to install the printer drivers and requires Admin access.
now we can install the printer drivers locally to our base image which works fine, however when we attach a printer when still get prompted for admin credentials, if we hit cancel on the dialog box then it continues and maps the printer through.

Has anyone run into this issue and how where you able to overcome? We know about thinprint/uniprint, but are looking for something that is "FREE". : )

Thanks,
