Modify published ACE VMs
Hello,

I have about 25 PCs in my department. All these PCs have a local copy of the same ACE VM. This ACE VM is updated once a month.

So when the VM is out of date I deactivate this VM in the Management Server. Now all the 25 PCs need the updated Version of the ACE VM.

At the moment the users manually copy the new ACE VM from a network share to their local computer. When all users are doing this the same time the performace is pretty slow

-> Is there a way to automate this task, perhaps at night? So that the useres allways have the most recent VM without any manual installation?
(I know about the silent Installation for the ACE Package, but how do I get the Package on the PC?)

Thanks for help!

ACE futile performance test?
So I have a client that wants to use VM ACE to deploy desktops. Mainly because of it's security features. I've been working with ESX for many years, but I'm pretty new to Workstation and Ace. I get the whole concept and I've been reading through the best practice guides. I'm pretty sure the current team of guys are building the VM's incorrectly. I was hoping to run a crazy test on my own.

Does anything think it would be futile to try and run a 3D game or watch an HD movie from an ACE session?

I've got a pretty good lab at home and I was thinking of running some tests since Workstation 7 just got released. I was thinking of building a striped down Windows 7 machine. I've got a lots of RAM / CPU and a kick a$$ video card in one of my systems. I know the new PCoIP can do all of this from a thin client, but I'm gonna see what results I can get locally.

Remote desktop to host machine

Hi All,

I have vmware ace running on my host machine and have setup a couple of virtual images to run on the machine. I am now remote desktoping to the host machine from another site and I am able to start the Virtual machine up. However when I try to input into the virtual machine it does not except input, the mouse does not work nor the keyboard. Have tryed the Ctrl G for direct input and that does not work. I am able to move the Ace screen around, communicate with the vmware player menu and even take a snapshot of the machine. It is just the actual virtual OS machine I cannot use.
Am I missing a setting or is it not possible to use a virtual machine when remoting to the host machine via remote desktop?

Thanks in advance,
Modify data but Protect for extraction
Hi.

We want to send a virtual machine to one supplier in an USB disk, to let him edit some confidential data. We want to let read and modify this data, and eventually print, but to restrict copy or extract from hard disk.

Supplier won't have access to our network.

Can ACE protect virtual machine for this scenario? is this totally secure?

Thanks very much

How is ACE creating the Sysprep folder
When deploying customized ACE a Sysprep folder is appearing in the %systemroot%. I created my own sysprep directory there, but the ACE deployment installer appears to create its own virtual sysprep directory, so it does not see mine.

How do I customize the sysprep that the ACE deployment uses so it contains my OEM files?
I have the sysprep files loaded in the correct location, but when I try to deploy the ACE using customization I get a 'Files Needed' dialouge box asking for the path to agt0407.dll on the SP3 CD. The copy from path is '\sysprep\i386'. I browse to that folder, but it is empty.

What is happening here? I did not have this problem with XP SP2.

Error while opening the ACE: The master copy of this virtual machine has been corrupted.

So the issue is that I believe a sync was not complete when the user removed the USB drive causing it to corrupt the ACE. Is there anything that can be done to recover the contents of the ACE? It is running Windows XP SP3 (guest) and the host OS is also Windows XP SP3. I am attaching the log contents when I try to run the ACE.
how to update Ace policy manually
I am running ACE 2.52 and want to be able to run the ace image, if connected to any ethernet network, wireless and with a 3G card. When the ace image starts, it looks for the server and finds the policy with ethernet and wireless fine. IT does not run the policy when the 3G card is connected and wireless and ethernet is not available. Quite a bit of these laptops will use 3G connection versus ethernet or wireless. I am also launching the image so they are not able to go back to the host.

Is there some sort of script or command I can run to make sure the new policy gets updated from the ace management server? Or are there any suggestions to this scenario.

Licensing Question
Hi guys,

I am really confused about the licensing options for ACE.

I have WS6 with the ACE Option Pack - well I assume it is the ACE option pack as I cannot find any reference to it in WS!! The reason I believe I have it is because I have an option in WS to 'Enable ACE features' which lets me set the deployment settings and policies etc...

The problem I have is this....Having created a VM in workstation I wanted to deploy it to a USB drive which I had no problem doing. I then took the USB drive to another computer where the VM duly complained about not having a license.

From what I understand each device is licensed with a ACE client license not the VM itself. I also thought that if you had the ACD option pack you also have volume key licensing as part of it?? What license do I have to enter into the player to get this to work? Are any client licenses included in the VLK?

Any help is apprecated

Thanks
I am looking to create a Bootable USB through VM ACE....

Basically I use VM workstation to create a virtual machine then I use VM ACE to make a pocket ACE package on a USB....

I want to be able to plug in my USB into a machine and have that machine bootup the USB and go straight into my Virtual Machine....

I have read all over the place that it can be done, but there hasn't been any links to any kind of procedures on how it's done....

Even a point in the right direction would be great.... if any of you guys can help I'd really appreciate it....

Which client license with ACE 2.5 and Workstation 6.5 ?
Hi,

I tried to get informations about this all over the VMware homepage, but everything refers to ACE 2.0 and ACE option for Workstation 6. So nothing about the latest ACE version 2.5 what comes integrated in Workstation version 6.5.x today.

My question is can I use ACE Volume Licensing keys (VLK) in Workstation 6.5 (without a ACE Management Server) to license the ACE packages I deploy instead of buying a ACE Client licenses for each ???

Encryption key security in memory
I am evaluating ACE for use as a java development environment for offshore developers. The developers have full access to the source code, but in order to guard our intellectual property, must not be able to cut and paste, or transfer files outside the company network.

We are currently using RDP to machines (locked down) at a company site, but response times can be so slow as the make this unusable.

The ACE solution alternative I was considering:

1. Encrypted ACE vm containing development environment on developer PCs.
2. Restricted networking, only allowing connection to a VPN server. VPN connection requires certifcate installed in ACE vm.
3. Copy and paste to host disabled.

I see at least one potential problem which may allow the encrypted vmdk disk file to be unlocked thus allowing the source code to be transferred electronically.
The ACE/vmplayer executables will be executing as a normal user program and it seems fairly simple to write a win32 program that will dump the memory of any process, thus exposing the encryption key for the configuration file which in turn can be used to find the find the disk encryption key.

Does the vmware ace executable guard against reading of the encryption key for the configuration file and the disk encryption key by another process?

(I understand that the source code could be much more simply captured using screenshots from the host then scanned using OCR - but this could be error prone. If the key can be exposed using the above method then repeating the procedure using the gained knowledge and toolset will be rapid)

Very slow sync ACE 6.0 - improved in later versions?
Hello -

I have deployed a Vm to a 16gb usb thumb drive. This was built with ACE 6.0, and the performance of the sync is very very slow. Have there been any improvements with the later versions of ACE specifically to the sync speed?

If so, what would be the best course of action to upgrade this thumb image so that the sync performance is improved (later rev of ACE)?

Computer naming in an ACE deployment

Hey,

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experiences around customizing the computer naming in an ACE instance? The current solution of being able to add a number of characters from the hosts computer name isn't doing it for me.

We currently have computer naming schema which is: SSSSS-T-NNNNNNN (S = SITE, T = ComputerType, N=incremented computer number)

T(Computer Type) is currently one of W(orkstation)/L(ab)/S(erver) .. What I would like to do is taking the current workstation/laptop name (example UKLON-W-0001234) and get the ACE instance to be called UKLON-V-0001234.

Any ideas if it is possible to do this during the final customization phase when the user has launched it in the VMWare Player through the VIX API?

I'm trying a first installation of VMware ACE Management Server on a fresh installation of CentOS. I'm using the RHEL4 RPM package off the website and I'm running into an issue starting apache. Here is the error I'm receiveing:
Any suggestions on moving forward? I'm rather new to VM so apologize for being green behind the ears. Thanks.

How do I create a Live CD/ PE Connection to ACE ?

I have been asked to come up with a method to connect to our ACE server.

ACE runs fine, currently we authenticate via RSA Tokens.

What I would like to do is, provide end users a USB Flash Drive that they can boot their home PC to, it will run something like UBCD4WIN, Barts PE, or actually, any Live CD type environment. This is all easy enough. What I would like some idea's for is overcoming these requirements without reinventing the wheel:

Java is installed
Webstart is installed
Once the Live CD is launched it immediately launches the browser
Change the default home page of the browser to point to our server.
When the user exits the browser/ACE environment, the USB Booted Live CD Environment reboots the machine.

Has anyone done anything like this, or aware of a good Live CD / PE environment that would be a good starting point for this?

I would just hate to spend a lot of time building my own only to find out their is already some sort of project working on this I could join.

Thanks for any help,

--Bruce D. Meyer

Update:

Reading around, I found 'Pocket Ace' It seems that this actually runs a stored image from the thumb drive, and doesn't actually connect to an ACE server. Or is it possible to have Pocket Ace connect to and run from the ACE server ?

I also thought about VMPlayer. Perhaps their is a solution to this using VMPlayer... Just thinking out loud...
Does the 30-day evaluation version of the ACE starter kit support "Pocket ACE packages" ?

The page "http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=1000645&sliceId=1" states the following:

"Note: If you have a Volume License for Workstation 6
ACE Option Pack, you will not see this prompt because the Volume
License embeds client licenses in the package. You do not need to enter
separate licenses for any ACE client, in this case."

However, no matter what I try, the client's VMplayer always comes up it is running on a public free license but requires a "VMplayer ACE license key".....

Having a similar issue on 3 host systems with ACE VMs loaded.

The tray icon which shows the status of the network access policy has disappeared from the host system. Some of these users have been having network connectivity issues at remote sites and are unable to identify if the access policy is being applied incorrectly. When ACE is started, the VM does display the correct network access information. The hosts are running a mixture of Windows XP Pro SP2 and SP3. The loaded ACE version is 2.5.1, build 126130.

Is there a way to force the icon to appear on the host?

This is all great for our environment, however when I go to download the ACE Management server application to integrate into our existing debian environment, the only packages available are for SLES and RHEL. Is there are debian package available, or are the files tar.gz'd anwhere to download and set up into an existing debain environment?
Memory restriction in ACE managed images?
Hi All,

Can anyone confirm for me whether it is possible to set an upper limit on the memory that an ACE managed vmware image can access. For example, suppose I have a host with 8GB memory, can I restrict the memory allocation of individual virtual machines to, say, 2GB each?

Many thanks,
ACE - Create a package from a VM fails with error
Hi,

I am new to ACE and I have a question.

I created a ACE Server on Windows in my Workstation. I also created a other Windows Machine and enabled ACE for this VM. I changed some propeties e.x. the date of expire and created a package. This works perfect. The VM was able to start and so on.

Then I created a new package from the same VM. This package was not able to start. I get the following error:

"Error while opening the ACE: Access to this ACE is blocked. This ACE was not installed properly or it has been corrupted."

Can you give me some information about this? Is it only possible to create one package from one VM?

Thanks,

Is it possible to start an ACE instance as a service on Windows Vista without logging in to the host?

My design calls for a kiosk mode ACE instance to start on a Windows Vista host without requiring the user to logon to the Windows Vista host.

For security policy compliance, I cannot leave the Vista host logged on, or automatically logged on.

Ideally, I would have the ACE instance launch as a service, and then take over the display as a kiosk - the user would then logon to the instance as if it was natively running on the computer. This is to accommodate a legacy desktop platform while we comply with a mandate to deploy Vista.
Some users report that their PCs (mainly notebooks) have a slow startup (up to ten minutes) after installing an ACE pachage.
If they remove their ACE package the startup performances returns normal.
If they reinstall the ACE package the startup returns slow.

Am looking at deploying ACE for temp workers in our company. From the manuals I understand that if you use a network access policy to restrict Host access on the Internal network (but allow guest) this is still active even when the ACE instrance is not running on the host.

Does the network access policy expire if you have the ACE instance set to expire, or do you have to uninstall the ACE instance (and or VMPlayer) to disbale the Network Access policy ?

Workstation/ACE performance on AMD desktop/laptop processors
I would be interested in hearing other people's experience with Workstation/ACE (newer builds) on AMD dual-core desktop and/or laptop processors. In another thread I have been describing my trials and tribulations with WS6.5/ACE package creation of Vista builds on an HP laptop with an AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-82 (2.2GHz) CPU. In a word, ACE fails on the package build consistently with what appears to be a timeout issue inside Vista during package creation. The package creation works perfectly when the files are transferred to a Core Duo machine ( a "slow" Core Duo at 1.6GHz). Both host machines are running Vista as the host O/S. In the case of the laptop the whole process has been tried under Vista Buisness 32bit as well as 64bit and results have been identical -- a dismal failure.

The Turion machine seems reasonably speedy in all other aspects and XP builds inside ACE package just fine. I know Core Duo's tend to be faster and better performing than Turion dual-cores but it seems silly to me that a 1.6GHz Core Duo is THAT much faster than the AMD running at 2.2GHz. And if anyone from VMware is looking at this it would be nice to know if there are known "issues" with using Turion machines.
Hello,

I've been told that it is possible to use real 3D acceleration (not software) with ACE by making the local 3D video card on the host available to the virtual machine.

Is this true, if so, were is it documented (specs, howto's ,etc).

We want to be able to use CAD software and not be limited by performance issues created by 3D acceleration functionalities simulated through a software abstraction.
Microsoft licensing
Hi,

the same old question again but it seems that nobody has an answer ( Microsft first ).

The question is about the licensing of the MS product ( first of all the os ) that we want to virtualize in an ACE environment. To be more specific we have a certain number of clients with Vista OEM license ( downgraded to XP ) and we want to use an ACE environment to run legacy and other programs in a separate environment ( guest OS Windows 2000 ). These environments will be active as the same time. All the virtualization is local - on lthe client - no server . Keeping in mind that our company has a select Volume License the question is what Microsoft license schemas are suitable for this scenario? ( Microsoft sugggested SA and EA but this seems to be a persuasive position... )

Anybody face the same problem?

Thanks for your help

Certificate did not verify
I'm trying to evaluate ACE. I have the ACE server running and my workstation with ACE pack running great. I created a simple ACE instance to try and deploy on my linux laptop. However, when I try and run it I get an error that the "certificate did not verify". I did upload an SSL certificate and did not use the self signed one (and it's a wildcard certificate). However, I'm not sure this is the issue. First off, the errors I saw in the log file looked like this....

None of the directories in the /usr/lib/vmware/lib had the '-i386' on the name so I created a bunch of symbolic links. However, that didn't fix the error and here's what the log says now...

It's very hard to evaluate with errors like this.

ACE Policy Update fails
I have an ACE package that was deployed several weeks ago, which we just identified a bug in one of the files deployed as an ACE Resource. I have fixed the bug and was planning to create a policy update package that I would deploy to correct the issue (the ACE Resource folder has its integrity verified by ACE, so we cannot simply replace the files in question).

However, when I install the policy update package, the install works perfectly fine, but when I go to start the ACE instance, I get the error message "Error while opening the ACE: Error while loading this ACE's policies." This is using VMware ACE 2.0.3 if that make any difference. Also, I am NOT using the ACE Management Server.

If anyone has any suggestions to what is causing this issue and how to resolve it, that input would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there is another way to update the ACE Resources that VMWare ACE will accept (without rejecting the changed files), that would be great to know.

Thanks!

I am in trouble about client licensing.
If I purchase a 1 year license and I distribuite to a given user (let's say User1) a pachage including a VM that will expire in 60 days, at the end of the 60 days can I use the same client license to distribute another package to a different user (let's say User2)?
I looked at the web sitwe but I was unable to find an answer to this trouble.
Creating a single file package for download
I would like the resultant package to be a single file that the user can download. Is there a built-in way to support this.

I know I could create a self-extractor to do this - but it then requires 2 complete copies of the package on the target machine - one in the sfx and one extracted. Then the actual setup instance will be twice as big as either package. So if I have a 500 MB package, 2 GB will be required to install it and if the user does not clean up the extract files, they will still eat up the unnecessary 500 MB.

Thanks,
Hi,

I am new to ACE and would like to set it up in a test lab to evaluate it. However I was wondering if I could get a kick start regarding this.

I have Workstation, Management Server 2.5.0 exe and Management Server Appliance downloaded now but where do I need to install these files. The Management server is obviously needed to manage the ACEs however are both of them needed? And workstation is needed to build the ACEs but can this be ran on the same VM as the management server?
Limiting ACE to run a VM only on a specific host
Is there a way to configure ACE so that a specific VM can be run only on a specific host, based on the BIOS id, the Serial Number, the MAC address or any other HW specific data?

In other word, is it possible to creare an ACE VM suitable to be opened and/or run ONLY on a given physical PC?

If a solution exists, is it possible to easily create different copies of the same VM, each one associated to a specific host?

Possible solutions based on otjer VMware products are welcome as well...
Rerun Sysprep on VMWare Client Machines

Due to a problem with a domain controller, ~40 VMWare client (using ACE) have fallen off of our domain. Instead of logging into each one locally and having an administrator readd the clients to the domain, I'd like to have it rerun through the sysprep that it does when it first launches on a new client machine. I'm a bit new to ACE, can anyone tell me if it's possible to have it run through that again after it's already been in use?

Licensing issues
Maybe I should rather ask this question to Microsoft, but I hope that somebody already found a possible solution...

I am considering using ACE to ditribute a pre-configured VM to let customer use an evaluate a custom application for a limited amount of time. From the technical point of view I think it works.

However, the virtual machine must use a Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows XP or Windows Server 2003). How can I legally distribute such virtual machine without violating Microsoft licensing? I know that Microsoft allows using demo versions of some operating systems, but I don't think I can redistribute them using tools like ACE.

Have anybody faced a similar problem and found a legal solution?

If I find a legal solution from the Microsoft point of view, what kind of ACE license shoud I pourchase from the VMware point of view?

ACE serving component?
Hi to all VMware experts!

I've a question regarding ACE Management Server. In the administrator's manual a component "ACE serving component" is mentioned to analyse/read the event log DB. What component is this? I haven't found anything about this component on the VMware website and nothing using search in the internet.

Friendly Regards
This is probably a simple question. I am wondering if a package can have policies based off Active Directory group membership or do you have to create a separate package. For instance usb device access, network quarantine, etc. If this is possible, how do you set it up in 2.5

Hello all. I had created an ACE package early last year and deployed to only a couple of people. Later in the year I created a new one that is now our standard. One of the original users now has a new PC and copied over his ACE package. He did not upgrade to the new one first. Now I need to apply a hot fix to get it running on the new computer (copy protection is enabled). I no longer have the origanal master. Is there anyway to create a hot fix for the copy protection without the orginal ACE master?

I've been testing a ACE desktop , deployed to a usb stick. Does anyone know if it is possible to put the vmware player directly in the package? If yes, how? I tried but in the documention it is written that the player has to be installed before being able to start the VM. Pehasps I will test to make a thinapp package for vm player, I will see if it works.

The probleme is for example, in Cyber Café, I presume I will not be able t install the player.
Cloning ACE Masters

After cloning an ACE master I seem to get the message that "ID in use on server" with the new machine, if I allow the new clone to overwrite the ID then the original machine give "Invalid session" error and won't start. Basically, I have several variations which I wanted all to be active in the field at the same time, but I don't want to start from scratch each time. I guess I confused on why cloning would not create an ACE master with a new unique ID, or am I missing something fundamental here.....

Ace Resource file is too big can not create the package. Ace resource files can not exceed 4GB

I have run into a problem when packaging my ACE. My ACE is 15GB and I would preferably like to split the package into 2 on 2 dual layer DVD's. I don't think it should be a problem since the dvds are 8.5GB each. When I try to create my package and use a custom setting to create two 8.5GB or 8500mb DVDs the creation fails and reports the above error.

The strange thing is if I select to split the file up to into 3x 4.7GB conventional DVD sizes over 3 DVDs there is no error. If I select 1 network image, again no error. Each of those two cases the ACE resource files have been split into small 1GB-3GB files. Where as when I try to create 2x 8.5GB images for dual layer DVDs instead the system try's to create one large ace resource file instead a number of small ones. Is there something in the package setup I need to do or this a limitation of the software?

ACE Player Silent Install via USB

I've been evaluating Workstation ACE Edition 6 as a way for users to access our VPN from their home computers using a USB flash drive. There are a couple problems I need to solve regarding the ease of use for end users:

*ACE Player installation needs to be silent/unattended (if not then ACE is a no go because it needs to be super easy)

*Upon shutdown the player asks the user if he/she would like to sync back to the USB flash drive. I need this answered automatically so the user doesn't even see this prompt.

So the user inserts USB flash drive, Player installs if it is not already, VM launches and on its own, user shuts down guest when finished and the Player closes without any prompts. Is this possible?

Workstation ACE package install folder
All,

Got a problem, wondering if anyone can help?

We are using VMWare Workstaion ACE v6.0.2 to create virtual machines. Our naming convention is Image 1 v1.0 etc, but we have been releasing subsequent versions, for example Image 1 v1.1 in packages that we then stick on DVD and take to the host machines.

We have noticed that the default package install path is still that of the original master image Image 1 v1.0, instead of the path that relates to the updated package version.

Is there anyway to change this? I cannot see anything in the package policy settings.
ACE Management certificate problem

Hi,

Due to various reasons our ACE Management Server was completely reloaded. There was no backup of the server. The database is remote so this exists. After reinstalling it we have the following problem.

When deploying new ace instances we get the error: "Error while opening ACE: Certificate did not verify"

We have tried to generate a new resource package, without luck - We have tried to create new self-signed certificates (and then a new resource package), without luck

Found a hit saying that we should check time and date on the Management server... time was fine

Any ideas?

I recently lost my SAN and had to reload from scratch. The ACE Management Server backup was unusable so I had to load it fresh.

I'm trying to get the policies for my ACE Client (Workstation) to push back to the new ACE server and am getting the error:

"Could Not Load Policies from Server"

I can add new ACE policies to the server but not old ones. I've tried disabling and re-enabling the ACE feature to no avail. I've looked around in the file system on the ACE Management server looking for the policies but haven't found them. I'm using the pre-wrapped Management VM that VMWare provides on an ESX 3.5 host machine.

Seems like there should be a way to wipe the information that ties my ACE instance to the old Management server but I'm coming up short on how.

Thanks,
Snapshots in ACE

Hello all,

Been using VMWare Workstation and Player for a couple years but this is my first post here. Forgive me if it's a dumb one.

For a couple years we've been making VM's in Workstation 5.x, putting them on clients where we ran them in VM Player. After a small amount of customization on the local client we would take a permanent snapshot by reaching across the network with Workstation. This made the snapshot accessible only to IT staff and not to the end user.

Now I am upgrading to Workstation 6 ACE edition, with the ACE version of the player on the clients and it appears that I cannot do the same thing. When I sit at my VMware Workstation and try to reach across to the client I get the error message:

Could not open virtual machine: "path/name etc"
This is a Workstation ACE Edition virtual machine. Please open it in VMware Player.

Does this mean it is no longer possible for me to take a snapshot on each client from my Workstation? If that's the case, how can I take final, permanent snapshots on each client that are untouchable by the end-users?

Many thanks,

On the ace master I have created a vpn connection without username and password (available to all users)

on the line for the vpn command i use:

        rasdial.exe temp SA_ACEVPN "%password%" /Domain:domainname

temp - name of the vpn to logon (does not prompt for username and password or user windows integrated creditionals)

SA_ACEVPN - Just to logon the domain for vpn

"%password%" - do i need the speech mark's

Pocket Ace VM Life Expectancy
Hello

I am looking at moving my vm to a 32Gb Flash drive. I have read that the life expectancy of a flash drive is around 10,000 writes to a block. What is the average life expectancy of a vista vm on a USB drive? At 10,000 writes, you would think a vm would only last around a week or so under normal operations before it started failing. Is a USB drive really a feasable solution for a vm?

Your opinions are greatly apreciated.
Most frustrating: ACE instance cannot access network

I have been successful in using ACE 1.x to create ACE Packagees which are restricted to connect certain assigned IP addresses e.g.

69.77.67.32/255.255.255.0

But now when I tried to use VMware 6.0.3 ACE Edition to create an ACE Package, I was puzzled by the policies interface and terms changed. There are more options than before. I followed my past settings in filling the Network Access, but when I try it by using "Preview in Player", it cannot access the IP I assigned. However, if I sellected "Allow all other addresses" in "Ruleset Editor - ACE Instacne in Everywhere", it works (but not I want).

I feel I was stucked somewhere around "Ruleset Editor - ACE Instacne in Everywhere", but have strugled a lot without any luck.

Anybody may have any ideas? Thank you in advance.

What is the concept of setting the 'recovery key' in Acess Control while Editing the policies for the ACE master.

And what doest it mean that:-- "existing public key" or " Create New Recovery Key".

Practically, I tried to do it. Created new Recovery Key, Set the path, but After deploying ace master, while Launching it, giving error message.

Hello,

I'm looking at ACE as a method to decrease the level of trust required of a host machine. A couple of simple:

Keys: Is it possible to supercede the encryption keys issued with new keys either generated by VMware or oneself?

Memory: From what I understand when the Player/Server/Ace VMM releases memory to the host it is 'cleared' - how much trust can be placed in this? Second do ACE apps generate a .vmem file to swap data from VM memory and release to the host? Can this be mitigated/avoided? An encryption key (say Vista's BitLocker) in use within a guest would reside in clear in memory when in use - if swapped to the host this could compromised (I have no idea of tools that would but can see it happening). The Ideal configuration would be where the only data 'leaving' the VM would consist of network traffic, and the contents of VMDK files.

We have a application that requires a specific resolution and color depth in order to accurately display images for medical diagnosis. Displaying these images requires minimum video card requirements. These images are very detailed and even if it's a pixel off that would be bad. If we run this application in a VM as an ACE package is the resolution and color depth as accurate as if it was running directly on the hardware? If there is any possibility that the resolution or colors are not accurate then we will stick with hardware. Are there any documents that describe how VMWare deals with different resolutions and color depths in the host and VM?
Address, but it fails to populate the actual Ace name. These Ace instances that have been deployed have not been joined
the SID and name the computer. When I go to my Ace Management Server I can see an IP address, but I cannot see
I have a similar problem, but I can't figure out how to make a new post...

I have VMware Workstation ACE 6.0.2 and I have a mouse problem. I have installed XP Pro SP2 and I installed the VMware Tools. Before VMware tools was installed my mouse stayed locked in the window until I pressed Ctrl+Alt...this was good. After tools it did the automatic grab/ungrab thing. I went to Edit>Preferences>Input and I unchecked the bottom 3 boxes, so it would stop auto grab/ungrab. It seemed to work fine, but if I drag my mouse to the very right edge or very bottom edge of the window, the mouse can get ungrabbed! It seems like some sort of bug...

How can I force my mouse to stay locked in the window? It was fine before VMware tools were installed...I even unchecked the mouse driver during the install!

I need it to stay grabbed so I can play older games.

VmWare ACE network policies and a VPN
I am currently testing VmWare ACE network policies to figure out how I should configure them, and I'm stumbling in terms of getting the firewall settings to allow the exact communcations I want out of the Ace instance while locking down everything else. I used the "quick setup" feature of the network policy to set things up. I allowed all host trafiic, and then blocked all guest trafiic except for local dns, dhcp, etc... then locked down to only allow access to the guest on all ports/protocols via the vpn endpoint IP address, 3 specific websites and the LAN address range for the private side of the VPN.

Using this firewall ruleset, I was able to connect to the VPN, but unable to acquire an IP address via DHCP on the LAN on the other side of the VPN. It just hung on "acquiring IP address". This does work with a fully open network policy, so the question is what I need to open up that I haven't, or what different approaches I need to take to get this to work the way I want. Here are some screen shots of the current policies.

thanks,
Revert to reimage snapshot on reboot rather than poweroff?
Greetings,

2 questions -

1.I know it's possible to revert to reimage snapshot on power-off, or you can set your disks to independent-nonpersistent, which also requires power off. Is there any way to have that happen on just a reboot?

We are running a 36 computer public internet lounge in a library. Base pcs are all Dell optiplex 740's with XP sp2 OS. We are running ACE 2.0.2 on top with an XP sp2 guest OS.

The ACE product is currently set to run as the shell of the base machine, and all security is managed via group policy and the library time management software. There is built-in functionality to reboot when a user's session is done, and at this point, I'd like it to come up with a fresh image, no user settings saved after each session.

My only other option seems to be to write a script using wmi to manage starting and restarting the ace so I can implement the reverting feature, whi, in my mind, is another layer of complexity to worry about maintaining.

2. the revert to reimage snapshop is a property of vmplayer, we are locking the users out of the player menu. is there a way to script/centrally manage that setting, or do I physically have to set it on each computer before restricting the menu?

Thanks for your help,

VmWare Tools time sync settings mismatch
I have time synchronization disabled in vmware tools (windows XP) in my ACE master, but after creating and installing the package, time synchronization is enabled.

If I disable package protection, package .vmx file contains the following keys

tools.syncTime = "TRUE"
time.synchronize.tools.enable = "1"
time.synchronize.tools.startup = "1"

even if my ACE master .vmxa file is set as follows:

tools.syncTime = "FALSE"
time.synchronize.tools.enable = "0"
time.synchronize.tools.startup = "0"

Is there a way to avoid this behavior or, at worse, a way to configure vmware tools at first boot using a script?

Thanks.
Problems applying Hotfix
I have received a hot fix request for a machine that has expired. I am able to open the hotfix.vmhr and successfully create the new hotfix.vmhf with a future expiration date using ACE.

On the machine with the expirerd VM, double clicking on this hotfix file prompts whether i would like to apply the hotfix, but when saying yes the next screen says "Could not apply the Hotfix.... ...Failed to update the {machinename}.

I am using VMware Workstation ACE Edition 6.0.0 (Build45731) on Server 2000

If anyone can help me with this, i would really appreciate it - I desperately need to get this working.

Many thanks
I've got a standalone ACE instance (no management server) that I need to change the number of virtual processors from 1 to 2. Does anyone know if it's possible to change the number of virtual processors for an ACE instance?
Hi,

We are doing a VMWare ACE installation, and I am trying to find out what to monitor on the ACE Management Server to make sure it is running. Which service, events etc.
Have you seen some doc that describe this - Any experiences??

Thanks
When we import a deployed ace virtual machine in WMware Workstation we have the follow error:

"Unable to determine guest operating system"

any idea?

thanks Davide

PS: We want import in Wmware Workstation a deployed ACE virtual machine (modified by user) to make a clone and after a new ace master.

Pocket ACE Question
When I plug a Pocket ACE USB device into a PC it attempts to reinstall another instance of VMPlayer versus just running off of the drive.

I even attempted to configure a seperate instance of VMPlayer in order to run the VM environment.

Did I miss a step because once you complete the package setup I only see two options and neither one works in correcting this behavior.

Thanks,
Booting from USB thumbdrive to a thin client VM

Licensing costs are increasing in my evaluation of Pocket ACE (WinXP, Symantec, ACE client, Altiris client, etc, etc, etc) and it was just brought to my attention today that perhaps we could have a VM on a thumbdrive that basically was a winterm VM that could connect to our terminal servers via VPN. The scenario that I see is that someone walks up to any PC anywhere, plugs in the thumbdrive we provide them and an RDP session opens up in which they authenticate to our VPN device. Once they authenticate it opens a remote desktop to our terminal servers.

This solution would be excellent since we already have the licenses for the connectivity into terminal services. However, I don't see Windows CE, for example, on any supported list of Guest operating systems.

Can someone help me think through this solution? I think Virtual PC supports Windows CE and if that's the case, then all the protections that ACE provides, I suppose we could supply simply by properly locking down terminal services. In other words, this solution might mean we don't necessarily gain much from using ACE and Microsoft's Virtual PC would be just as effective (perhaps without the centralized management that ACE Mgmt Server provides).

One downside to this is that the host PC the user was on would have to have Internet access, but that's sort of how we intended to use ACE anyway (for remote and onsite access, both cases would necessitate some sort of network connectivity anyway).

Any thoughts? Solutions? Vendors providing this already as a canned solution? I haven't heard of anyone doing this, but it sounds so simple that I'm not sure why. By the way, we don't have Citrix, just Terminal Services so the whole idea of providing remote access to applications via Citrix published applications (via a web browser) isn't an option for us - this would presumably be the simpliest solution.

Thanks!
Activation and authentication (Domain local groups?)

Hello,

when creating a Master and using Policies in Workstation ACE Edition the Access Control Policy offers Activation and authentication via Users or groups.

Is it possible to use domain local groups to control the access or is it only possible to use global groups ?

Thank you.
