Server Heartbeat and Windows 2008 64-BIT

I was planning on a future purchase Server Heartbeat but it appears from the Server Heartbeat pdf that it isn't support on Windows 2008 64-BIT yet. It isn't even support on 2003 64-BIT yet. My plans were to bring my vCenter server up to 2008 64-BIT this week and then plan in my budget for next year to get Server Heartbeat. Has anybody run Server Heartbeat on 2008 64-BIT or is there any plans for VMware to bring the application into a supportable state for Windows 2008 64-BIT.

what will be replicated from the 2nd server to the primary one..

Hi,

what wil happen in the following scenario:

1. the primary server fails and the secondary takes over..

2. the secondary server is running for one month..

3. during this month, it's being updated with new:

A. MS hotfixes

B. new applications

will these be replicated to the primary server ?

the reason asking is that i happen to have a secondary server that had a CA agent installed on but wasn't installed on the primary server..ive done a failover to the secondary server...but this CA agent was never replicated to the primary one altough ive done a a full registry check..

also, how do i monitor the two nodes for hardware failure (assuming i have an enterprise monitoring software already in place)
Hi,

when installing heartbeat 5.5 u1 in a p2p enviornment..

do i need to manually install vcenter4 on the two nodes or a windows os will be sufficient and then after installing vcenter4 on one node, i should follow it by installing heartbeat and do a restore to the other physical node where i didnt install vcenter yet,

also, can i install the nodes in a domain enviornment??
heartbeat over WAN - how to setup the remote servers?
currently my vi3 env is: (700 vm)

physical VC ver 2.5

SQL on a separate machine - actually on Microsoft Cluster also Physical (64 bit)

my goal is to upgrade the env to vSphere and to use VC heartbeat on a DR remote site.

I know that heartbeat currently does not support 64 bit and also not cluster.

so i"m thinking of creating a parallel VC (version 4) as a VM (so i willl be able to clone it easly to the DR)

and to create the SQL DB on a physical non cluster, 32 bit. (or maybe it will be ok as a VM?)

now I need to know how to setup the remote servers in the DR,

I will clone the VC, but how can the heartbeat of the sec NIC should be set? as if i"ll put gateway etc...than the VC name will probably have a conflict (if it was on LAN than I could use a point to point with no gateway but how to do it over wan?)

also how to set the remote SQL? should I clone it as well? (i kbow that I will have to run the setup on the 4 servers)

another thing, the recommandation of vmware is to put the update manager on a different server than the VC...so is that means that I should/can clone that server to the DR too? and can I install the heardbeat on that one too? (meaning 6 installations ?)

How many of What Part is Needed
Looking at the web site, its not obvious what is needed to set up a functioning vCenter Server with Heartbeat in terms of purchasing licenses.

vCenter Server is roughly $5k. vCenter Server Server Heartbeat for 1 vCenter Server is roughly $10K.

Is the Server Heartbeat add-on the only extra purchase required or do you need to purchase 2 vCenter Server licenses and 2 vCenter Server Heartbeat licenses?

If 2 of each are required, that moves your vCenter Server cost from $5K to $30K. Is there really a six-fold advantage over doing vCenter Server as a VM and using VMware HA or VMware FT to minimize/eliminate outages of the management server?

Thanks,
vCenter Heartbeat Memory Pages / Sec value Exceeded

Hey Community,

I am receiving the following error...

"VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat Yellow Alert: Application Warning. This happened at Mon Jul 20 11:13:01 CDT 2009 on the Primary SVCTEST-OLA01 while Active. Further information if available: Rule Triggered: Memory Pages / Sec value exceeded". When this error is triggered, replication seems to hang and is difficult to get back going. I need to restart Heartbeat on both servers to get it back going again. This happens several times a day

VMware vCenter server/ Heartbeat are running in a V2V environment. Each VM has 4 GB of Ram, 1 vCPU, C:\ 16 GB (OS), D:\ 12 (DB Data), E:\ 20 GB (VUM). The VMDKs of the Primary are sitting on an 8 disk Raid 10 FC LUN on a CX700 (LUN as Moderate peak usage). The secondary is sitting on a LUN of similar specs except on a CX500.

The real Kicker is that this environment is entirely a test environment and has no load. Only one test host is registered with this vCenter. No VMs are registered. This is a WAN deployment accross a VPN from a datacenter in the Central Time zone to a datacenter in the Pacific time zone.

Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this error? Could this be related to only 1 vCPU on the VM?

Thanks,

vSphere and vCenter Server Heartbeat

Is vCenter Server Heartbeat going to be compabile with vSphere? The pdf for Server Heartbeat doesn't indicate compatibility with vSphere. I'm looking into creating a case in my company to add some redundancy for what will be my future vSphere server and would like to know if vCenter Server Heartbeat would be the option to persue.

virtual machine heartbeat delay
I have a cluster of 14 hosts with 150+ VMs. The VC is 2.5 U2 and the hosts 3.5 U2. I have enabled an alarm to alert when a VM heartbeat is lost. The problem being is that if the VM is under load it may occassionally lose heartbeats and trigger the alarm. If I edit the file /etc/vmware/hostd/config.xml and set the heartbeatDelayInSecs tag under vmsvc to 0 seconds as below:
<vmsvc>
<heartbeatDelayInSecs>#</heartbeatDelayInSecs>
<enabled>true</enabled>
</vmsvc>

Will this delay the heartbeat alarm triggers?

Also VM monitoring is not enabled at the cluster level.
