Features Wish List
The excitement surrounding vCMA is very encouraging. And we would like to know what else we could do that will make the lives our end users simpler.

If you're excited about the existing feature set...that's cool But please do let us know if there is anything that's not so cool and whether we have missed something that

should have been there all along. Thanks.

Obviously SRM 4.0 is relatevly new to the market (under 48 hours after GA), I was wondering how long until vCMA will be able to work with SRM 4.0. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Saving login credentials - iphone, safari, cookies
I am very new to the iphone. vCMA installed fine. VMTools updated no problem. System works great.

I don't seem to be able to keep a cookie for the server information on the iphone. When i logout I get the cashed page with server history. I can log back in. When I go back later its gone and I have to supply credentials again. The doc suggests that cookies should save this. I have enabled cookies etc on the phone, but I have to enter the information each time I go back to the app. Can anyone shed some light?

vCenter Update Manager "Unknown Failure" with VMA in operation
I have vCenter Mobile Access running on ESX 4. When the VMware Update Manager attempts to download patch definitions, it generates the error message "VMware vCenter Update Manager has an unknown failure. Check Tasks and Events tab and logs for more details." Checking Tasks and Events, there are two related errors: "Repository address not set for vitual appliance vCenter Mobile Access, it doesn't support updates by VC" and "Failed to scan vCenter Mobile Access for VA upgrades".

Shutting down the vCenter Mobile Access appliance makes this error go away.

The release notes for VMware Update Manager 4.0 b162871 (http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_vum_40_rel_notes.html) describe a known issue that may relate to this:

VMware Tools Upgrade Remediation Might Fail with a Misleading Event Error Message
When you try to upgrade VMware Tools on a virtual machine with no installed VMware Tools, the remediation fails with a misleading error message:<code>VMware vCenter Update Manager had an unknown failure. Check Tasks and Events tab and logs for more details.</code>Update Manager does not support VMware Tools upgrade for virtual machines on which VMware Tools is not installed.

Busy as you no doubt are, if you get the chance to rebuild the vCenter Mobile Access appliance with the current ESX 4 VMware Tools, it would be interesting to see if that makes this error go away.

Thanks. Jeff.

/vim not working...
I've been using the mobile access app and it has worked great. I have just recently re-downloaded the 1.0.0.7 (newest) version of this app and I cannot get it to respond on the /vim page. The studio page at x.x.x.x:5480 works and the default page on x.x.x.x also works fine. Only the /vim page is dead. This is using the simple .ovf template import function. If I try uploading the .vmx based download with vCenter, the main vmdk file fails with an I/O error exactly in the same place, 463,404.80KB. I can upload/move huge 2-60GB files on the same host with vCenter. Is it possible for this download to be corrupt? Interested to see if other people are having trouble lately with this download.

Thanks for any help,
vMA vs vCMA & vCPA Security
Does anyone know the differences with vMA and vCMA?

Im trying to find more info on vMA but Im having little luck finding screen shots or videos on what it can do.

I have been using vCMA and I have to say its awesome. One of the best products I've seen on the mobile market for vmware.

However, I have a couple issues on it.

1: We need more information on the setup and etc..... Lacking here big time. I was trying find information on how secure it is and how best to ope it up to my mobile devices on the outside world without just opening up port 80 to this vm. To me its just not secure enough.

2: Need to build some more security into the system and it will be a highly deployed vApp as long as the companies can trust its use.

Now here is my workaround on this issue of security that I thought I would share to everyone.

I have a cisco ASA 5505 with clientless VPN. I used my asa to provide full ssl authentication to my wonderfull vCMA tested and using a Touch Pro mobile pda and now I have full secure access to it from my mobile device on the outside internet, and best yet clientless ssl vpn is configureable with user level security. I plan to blog a how to on this if anyones intersted it was really easy but here is a quick blog on it.

1. setup your vCMA Make sure you can hit internally

2. next setup your ssl vpn user and setup you firewall to allow outside interface to hit the ssl web interface.

3. publish a vCMA website link in you list of sites for easy access.

4.connect to your firewall ssl vpn web interface on your mobile device ex: https://123.123.123.123 it should come to the login for webVPN

5. click your vCMA link

6. use ip address to connect to the Virtual Center (I had to use ip address only Not sure why my dns is not passing thru either my vCMA or firewall needs additional configuring to allow me to use dna names)

7. There you go fully up and running securely. So now when your at the pub you can restart that vm with least amount of thinking just point and click. Another great mariage saving app by vmware. Maybe they should start branding there apps with some type of Marriage saving rating......

VMware vCenter Mobile Access Technology Preview is now available

Folks,

It doesn't happen often but when it does, it is a beauty...

We're very excited to announce that we are ahead of schedule so we are releasing the VMware vCenter Mobile Access technology preview bits now. You can download the bits by clicking on the Download button under the Getting Started section at: http://communities.vmware.com/community/beta/vcmobileaccess?view=overview&numResults=15. There is a users' guide posted at: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9741. The documentation is actually an easy read so we encourage you to skim through it as you download the product bits.

As mentioned before, a number of us involved in this project will be actively participating in the discussion forums so please post your questions and feature requests in this forum. Your feedback is invaluable to us in fine-tuning this product so please keep it coming. We look forward to your thoughts on vCMA.
Full configuration instructions

Below are the steps I used to configure my vCenter Mobile Access VM on VMware ESXi. I hope this is helpful.

Change root password (default root password = 'vmware')

Set hostname (can't set in VM; instead, create a PTR record in DNS)

Set IP Address (via Configure Network option on the VM console)

Install perl (for VMware Tools upgrade) (yum install perl)

Add CD-ROM hardware (for VMware Tools upgrade)

Upgrade hardware

Change the timezone (cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago to /etc/localtime) (for Central Time)

Upgrade VMware Tools (install as you would for any Linux system without X, but run ./vmware-uninstall-tools.pl first (from ./vmware-tools-distrib/bin); ignore errors)

Is there a way to restrict access to this virtual appliance..a firewall or something so that not just anybody on the network can access the http page via a browser? Be nice to be able to lock it down more.

will there be a new release of this appliance anytime soon? What time of updates will be done to it on that release?

Be nice to have the server names and login credential TO NOT try to automatically save so that the next person accessing it cant use someone elses credentials.
I have the Mobile Access Appliance setup and runing. I can browse to the http://vcmacomputer/vim page in IE web browser on my computer just fine no problems at all...but when i try from the Blackberry device it does not open. From the Blackberry device i can however browse to http://vcmacomputer and the apache page comes up fine on the blackberry...but when i add in /vim or /vim/login.jsp nothing opens.

Anyone seen this on their setup? I am running it on a BES...is there any certain settings that need to be made to the Handheld itself or the MDS on the BES for it to work?

One-Click Login for vCenter Mobile Access is certainly a convenience, but it presents a security risk in case a Blackberry is lost, misplaced, or in the wrong hands. Is it possible to configure this feature so that:

It is disabled altogether, or

It remembers the Server name but not the Username and Password, or

It remembers a drop-down list of previously used Server names but not the Username and Password (as does the Virtual Infrastructure Client on Windows), or

It remembers the Server name (or a drop-down list of servers) and Username, but not the Password.

One can work around this by remembering to Remove previously used log-in information, but obviously that method is prone to errors of omission.

How To: Upgrade the VMware Tools in vCMA
I am by no means a linux expert but this method worked for me. I now have the latest version of VMware Tools from vSphere running in vCMA.

0. Snapshot the vCMA machine so you can undo if there are any problems!

1. Firstly download the latest linux.iso from your esx box to your desktop. Use WinSCP or other similar tool to download this from /vmimages/tools-isoimages

2. Extract the tar.gz file using an archive manager such as 7zip. The vSphere version is called VMwareTools-4.0.0-164009.tar.gz so this is what I will refer to from here on.

3. Upload VMwareTools-4.0.0-164009.tar.gz to the vCMA servers /tmp directory using WinSCP or downloading it from a webserver using wget http://server/VMwareTools-4.0.0-164009.tar.gz

4. On the vCMA server console install the The World-Wide Web library for Perl. yum install perl-libwww-perl

5. Extract the contents of the VMwareTools-4.0.0-164009.tar.gz file in the /tmp directory. tar zxf /tmp/VMwareTools-4.0.0-164009.tar.gz

6. Uninstall the previous version of VMware Tools using the uninstaller from the latest version. The uninstall script wasn't left from the initial install. /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/bin/vmware-uninstall-tools.pl

7. Install the latest version accepting the defaults. /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/vmware-install.pl

8. Reboot the vCMA server. shutdown -r now

9. If everything works correctly remove the snapshot.

That should be all there is to it.

Good luck!

iPhone for VMWare Server Desktop Access

Hi,

Apologies is this is in the wrong place, but I find the pace at which new platforms are announced and old ones merged / renamed a bit confusing.

I currently use VMWare Server to host several VM's, one of which is an XP image that is dedicated to hosting a Cisco VPN client that lets me VPN into a customers network, and MSTSC to a few dedicated machines.

The client is very security conscious, so I can only access from my own fixed IP address, and the VPN software disables all network access asided from the link to their network.

At the moment, I port forward to the web interface on 8333 and this lets me access my VMWare server box from any PC, and then use the browser plugin to access the dedicated XP/VPN VM. All of it works flawlessly, and very handy.

My question is, is there any way to duplicate this experience using an iPhone? I guess at it's simplest level, I'm asking if the iPhone browser would support access to the VMWare server console and remote desktop plugin? I can't just expose the individual VM as the Cisco VPN software blocks any access.

The alternative is that I'm heading out for a dedicated netbook and a 3G dongle, but I'd prefer an iPhone solution if it's possible.

Thanks

The official "how will I connect to this thing" thread...

Once you get connected, using the app will be easy. People are starting to wonder just how they would go about actually getting their mobile devices to connect to the Mobile Access server so I thought I would mention a few of the ways we've tested. Cabir already presented some of this info in another thread too. One common piece of information - because we used VMware Studio to build the virtual appliance, we got the simple built-in management interface without extra effort. This means that tasks like assigning a static ip are going to be straightforward.

1. BlackBerry, with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). This is by far the easiest way, because BlackBerries that are connected to a BES are already on their company's intranets. Loading the app should be as simple as pointing at the app URL (the format of which will be documented at release).

2. Iphone. We tested two methods successfully. The first was to create an ipsec vpn connection to our intranet. Once we were in things worked flawlessly. The second method worked on every device we tested but is slightly specific to our setup. We used our generic ssl/vpn gateway to authenticate, then we used the web proxying feature of the vpn landing page to get to the url we needed. The resulting app ends up with a vpn "bar" at the top since the page is hosted in this case but functionality is not impaired.

3. Symbian/Nokia. The ssl/vpn solution worked well. There might be vpn solutions out there, check with your network administrator.

4. WinMo. The ssl/vpn solution worked well. We couldn't get the built-in vpn client to negotiate with our network but it certainly seems possible.

5. Android. The ssl/vpn solution worked well. There might be vpn solutions out there, check with your network administrator.

6. BlackBerry without BES. Can you guess? The ssl/vpn solution worked well. There might be vpn solutions out there, check with your network administrator.

In all cases users are free to turn on ssl and add their own ca-signed cert. Some of the devices we tested would simply refuse to connect when presented with a self-signed cert, and some others just warned and let us through.

I hope this helps people get an idea of how they will deploy this software. Please feel free to ask connection-related questions here and we will try to get them answered.

I have successfully download the ovf and install the virtual appliance. It works fine with my blackberry. I can connect to individual servers or virtual center.

However I don't know how to change the username and password.

I would also like to know how this works?

We have a BES server on our network and no configuration was neccessary. I just turned on the vCenter Mobile Access appliance and entered the ip address of my virtual center and bingo, I can access through my blackberry.

Hi,

In the demo, the browser connection appeared to be plain http.

Will SSL connections be supported?

Will a certificate be auto-created?

Can we load our own certificate or wildcard certificate?

This is a great feature as long as it is secure.

I downloaded the ovf file from the download site and imported into my host. When I power on the VM I get "Operating system not found". Does the ovf files not work correctly? Should I not get ovf files and create the VM manually?
further exploration of vCMA

Exploration of vCMA

Note: I'm using iPhone G1 which is over Edge connecting to our VPN and everything works like a charm

1. I've bookmarked the vCMA page on my iPhone homepage for ease

2. If you would like to customize the About section you can edit the following files:

/usr/lib/vmware/mobile/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/vim/WEB-INF/classes/about.properties
/usr/lib/vmware/mobile/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/vim2/WEB-INF/classes/about.properties

3. I've noticed all the configuration files and class defintions are under /usr/lib/vmware/mobile/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/{vim,vim2}

There was one file that I found that had some interesting comments:

/usr/lib/vmware/mobile/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/vim/WEB-INF/classes/stubs-config.properties

I know that vim25 most likely refers to the current SDK release 2.5 and K/L has already been mentioned publicly as the codename for vSphere, but what is Pluto ? Perhaps legacy? or something more =)

4. Okay, paranoid of all the power of vCMA? You can lock down certain functionality, take a look at:

/usr/lib/vmware/mobile/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/vim/WEB-INF/classes/client-config.xml

Here's what mine looks like currently (disabling w/predjudice =])

[root@kate classes]# cat /usr/lib/vmware/mobile/tomcat/apache-tomcat-6.0.16/webapps/vim/WEB-INF/classes/client-config.xml

      <!--  SRM -->
      <feature id="10" name="srm" enabled="true" />
   </features>
</client-config>

Once you've made your edits, you'll want to restart the mobile service which will restart vCMA

service mobile restart

Also from this file I would like to point out one additional thing:

<!-- Features configuration (By default all features and operations are enabled) -->

<operation id="connection" enabled="false" />

I tried to enable it but didn't find anything different and didn't see a connection class, so perhaps it's not available yet.

Here is a screenshot of Migration functionality being disabled, you can see the icon is no longer available

Here is a screenshot of our Host and I've disabled all operations on the host (shutdown,reboot,standby,enter/exit maint. mode)

Similiar with the VM(s), I've only enabled PowerOn and Reboot

This of course is to show what you could enable/disable, having all this functioanlity is great especially when I need to quickly reboot or powerOn a new VM.

Well that's all I have, hope you find some of this information informative and motivates you to explore vCMA if you get a chance. I'm looking forward to vCMA when it GA and hopefully some of our suggestions might make it into the next release.

Two New Videos: VMware vCenter Mobile Access (vCMA): Installation & Usage
Hi all,

I'm so excited about this great addition to the vCenter, i produced two videos one for the back end installation of the vCMA virtual appliance, and the second using the BlackBerry emulator for demonstrating most of the features. One thing however that did not work with me was the SRM, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I hope you will like them.
vMA OVF and vSphere4 RC

(OK, I know vMA is bad abbreviation as that is in use by another management tool by VMware)

I want to know if the .OVF format used for Mobile Access is compartiable with vSphere4 - as I'm currently getting an error message...

(I'm not sure if the VMX file version will be either - so I'm going to use the vmdk, and vmkfstools and start with clean VMX file.)
Potential bug under Blackberry browser version 4.6.1 Nextel 8350i

Nextel 8350i

Using the browser in hotspot mode, i.e. connected to the local network via wifi and bypassing the blackberry proxy.

The first row of icons; search, migrate, hosts and clusters all link to the events page. Happens in both column and page view regardless of zoom level. While hovering the pointer over any of the icons then using the link address option the dialogue box shows http://server_name/vim/action.do?=scheduledTasks as the URL.

Second row of icons is not affected.

Bug with VMotion and Resource Pools
Hey All,

I got VMA setup in our 3.5 Lab environment and I noticed when I VMotioned a VM from one host to another it took it out of the resource pool it was in and placed it in the root of the cluster outside of any resource pools. Is there any way to not ask for which resource pool to Migrate it to and just set it's existing, or ask the question as part of the VMotion wizard on VMA?

Thanks,
Bumping up Ben's response on supported platforms question...

vCenter Mobile Access is designed to be used from mobile phone browsers, so it should work on many devices. We tested Symbian (Nokia E71), iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Mobile.

We'll be interested in all your feedback when the download is available in a few weeks.

Thanks!
Viewing Performance Stats
Firstly, how handy is it having mobile access to performance stats?! Great feature. I could previously see these when connecting to my VPN and then opening up RDP to my VC Server, but a large resolution over RDP using iPhone isn't as easy as this mobile version!

However, my current version is showing CPU usage from one of my VMs from 10pm - 11pm (first one I checked). Current time is 4:35pm. How do the performance stats work exactly? Is it possible for them to be real-time (or say last hours worth of stats)? Or is this an issue with the date/time on the appliance?

BlackBerry Server - Special Requirements?
Great work!

Are there any special requirements for the BES or does this work off of the stadard blackberry browser being proxied through the internal BES?
Awesome, when and how

Hi,

Really cool stuff guys, yes this opens up yet another world of business and makes our 24/7 economy easier to manage.
No more laptop that travels with you all the time for the odd case when there's trouble with one of the servers.
This begs for another question though.
What platforms will be supported. I know that my next new phone (that i get next week.. can't wait ) a nokia 5800 xpressmusic runs Symbian.. will it work?
Or is this going to be windows mobile only?

Thanks!

--
Wil
VCMA Youtube demo assumes public IP for appliance?

Without a VPN client for the blackberry, I'm assuming that the VCMA appliance would need to be access via a public IP either via NAT or DMZ. If that's the case what ports are in use?
will vCenter Mobile Access support VI4 only or will it also cope with VI3?
Welcome to VMware vCenter Mobile Access Technology Preview program

Hello,

I’m very excited to share information about a new and exciting project that a few of our wonderful engineering folks have been working on - VMware vCenter Mobile Access. (Thanks BenK, Cabir, Harish!)

Did you ever get paged when you are in a meeting about some virtual machine that needed to be restarted? Or, did you ever get an alert when you are at your kid’s soccer game or at the movies that a particular server is overloaded? Actually, imagine any scenario where you need to actively manage your datacenter but you are nowhere close to a PC. Wouldn’t it be nice to act on the notification from your mobile phone? After all, we are now a generation that doesn’t leave home without a mobile phone…

Introducing VMware vCenter Mobile Access (vCMA). vCMA allows you to monitor and manage VMware Infrastructure from your mobile phone with an interface that is optimized for such devices. Specifically, it allows you to:

• Search for virtual machines in your data center
• Migrate virtual machines from one host to another using vMotion
• Execute recovery plans using VMware Site Recovery Manager
• Access Scheduled Tasks, Alarms and Events
• And much more...

Instead of explaining all the capabilities, we figured it would be easier to show them in a video - you can view a demo at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UxDnV2qaeM.

We will be releasing vCMA as a technology preview in April 2009. You will be able to download the bits (vCMA server virtual appliance) and access the discussion forums at: http://communities.vmware.com/community/beta/vcmobileaccess. We enabled the discussion forums already so if you want to jot down your first thoughts or feature requests once you’ve seen the demo, you can get started now. A lot of us associated with this project will be trolling here and will be happy to answer your questions.

I recommend that you bookmark the vCMA portal and check back in early April to download the bits.

Thanks!
