sharing folders in vmware
Hello,

Iam using vmware 4.0 and 3 virtual machines on it running Windows server2003. I have however failed to share folders between the three machines.

I thought right clicking the folder and selecting sharing and security would do but this option isnt available.

Kindly help.

Thanks.
Can VCP's get a discounted VMWorld Subscription?
Hi all.

I know that us VCP's get a discount on the real VMWorld (and Europe) but do we also get a discount for the virtual VMWorld subscription?

I hope so, because my credit card can't handle $699 straight after Christmas!

Cheers.
So are others besides just me getting calls still from booth vendors at VMworld? I just got another one this morning and I had no idea what the company was or what products they were "showcasing". I would've thought they would've called sooner because at least for me I don't remember 1/2 of the vendors I got swag from or what they actually were providing to the virtual world.
Meeting the experts and spending time with people from the forums in person, *PRICELESS*!

Thanks to Kyle, Jason, Eric, Ed, Tom, Steve, and Terri (sorry if I forgot some other names). We really had a good time. I was thrilled to meet everyone. It was a blast.

I personally didn't think much of the cheesy wifi setups (and I accidentally bumped everyone off one of them -- oops) and I thought VM Ware could have spent just a little more time on the "event" we did at the LVMS, that was somewhat of a dissapointment, at least for me. It was as if it was a last minute "get together" idea. Anyway, the Vendor Room was awesome, reminded me of Comdex from years ago. I met some really cool people (you know who you are!). It was fun meeting all of you, we have to this again.

I really enjoyed the VM World overall (sans the connectivity issues on my phone). I look forward to the new stuff coming out. This will be a fantastic 2009. Can't wait.

Favorite Sessions/Labs
With the release of the sessions and labs coming in the coming weeks, was interested in what sessions and/or labs were your favorites, and why? I'll be downloading quite a few including the ones I went to but would be interested in finding other good sessions that I might have missed.

Oh and don't say the VMTN community session, bunch of brown nosers....

I'll say that my favorite sessions were both based off of security, partly because that's where I wanted to improve my skills and help my company: Practical Securing Solutions for a Virtual Infrastructure (po2773) and Securing VMware Infrastructure: Lockdown and operations (po2412). I found both of them well presented and full of good security tips and best practices.

In the lockdown and operations they took a visio snapshot of a large company that used ESX and broke down all their security messures and configuration, said what was good, what was bad, and what they might have done differently. I found that way of deminstrating it very easy to follow and very well explained.

So what are your favorites?

Vmworld 2008 first impressions?
So, what does everyone think?

The setup seems like it'll work.

I'm SOOOOO glad I didn't send in my picture for that cartooning thing. If you're not here yet, you'll see why.

Labs ..... horrible. Just like last year. I really hate to say that but, with it limited to 2 labs, I can't even re-take the ones that didn't work. The first lab I took was scripting. It was pretty good however the materials had issues. They don't have physical books this year. The lab manual is a PDF so there's no place to take notes. Also, you have to keep scrolling back an forth for information. Which wouldn't be a problem if the machines weren't running so slow. It literally took about 30 seconds to go back a page. The biggest issue I had with the scripting lab was that the book didn't tell you what your output was supposed to look like. There was no way to tell if you did it correctly or not. The techs that were there to assist were not on the same page. When I asked one tech if the commands case sensative, he said "no". Later, when I was having issues, another tech said it was. As far as I can tell, the commands are not case sensative.

The other lab I took was Site Recovery Manager. They had issues with the PDF file. It kept crashing. So, you'd go forward through the lab a couple of pages then, Acrobat would creash. You'd have to wait for it to open again (About 2 to 3 minutes) and you'd get a couple pages further. When I finally got everything installed, I was supposed to see the replicated storage in VC. I couldn't. Two different techs couldn't figure out why. By that time we were already an hour into an hour and a half lab anyway. So my SRM install and configure lab consisted of me clicking on next, next, next. That's it. I necer got to the configure part.

I'm really disappointed. Especially since I can't re-take them. I understand that it's not easy setting this stuff up. They couldn't really rent the whole floor a week in advance just to set these labs up so I know they mush have been here since last night setting them up.

If only there was a way to have all the machines we were working on in some sort of portable format. This way they could set it all up somewhere else weeks or even months in advance and test, test, test. Then, on the day of the lab, copy all these machines here. Too bad that technology is years away.

Unofficial Presentations in Track Rooms

Hello,

I was considering doing an Unofficial prenstation or two in the track rooms. We can sign up to do these and VMworld will provide seating, etc. So who is interested in what?

Get the security folks together to round table ideas, etc. A mini-panel if you would.

General Virtual Security presentation

Forensics on VMware ESX presentation

So who wants what, which would you like to see/hear?
I generally like how the schedule builder has evolved and it's better this year than it has been previous years. However, one thing about it that is a bummer is that it doesn't allow overlapping content - even for personal time items of which I have been trying to plug several in that in some areas overlap start or finish times. It doesn't allow me to add two entries for the same time slot so that I can make a last minute decision on where I'm going to choose to spend my time.
VM World 2008
Moderators, I know this isn't the correct forum, but I wanted to contact the people that use ESX 3.5 daily, and contribute to see who is going to VM World 2008.

So who among the active users and the ones that contribute and ask questions, is going to be at VM World 2008, in Vegas?

Does anyone else besides me think this is like the greatest event, a cool city, free of charge (on Company Asset) and the best part is, I don't have to take a vacation to Vegas.. AND we get to attend VM World, this is like a true dream come true for me. Anyone else going to be there besides myself?

Is there a breakout session which covers identifying underutilized and/or underpreforming VM's?
Anyone else going from the UK?
Hi,

Just wondered if there were any other people travelleing from the UK for Vmworld 2008? I'm there for 6 days from the Saturday so I've got a couple of days to climatise and have a look around Vegas for the first time. If there's enough of us maybe we could meet up for a bit of networking/drinking if anyones up for it?

Labs at VMworld?
Is it a safe assumption that lab manuals will be available to be downloaded by VMworld attendees as in previous years? I'm not officially registered yet and already there is a waiting list for the instructor led lab sessions.

Tips for New Attendees?
I've heard several "horor stories" from people who have attended VMworld nad in most cases it's because the attendee wasn't prepared for what was instore. Do of you "VMworld Veterens" have any tips and advice for to help new attendees get the most out of VMworld?

FYI, received the following email this morning. Please check your schedules to see if your sessions were impacted:

Dear VMworld 2008 Attendee,
During the past week we have had to make some changes to the VMworld Breakout Session Schedule and as a result you may need to re-register for some of your sessions. We recommend that you log back into the Schedule Builder and check your schedule as soon as possible.
Sign in Now
To sign into Schedule Builder, you will need your VMworld 2008 registration username and password.
We apologize for the inconvenience and we look forward to seeing you at VMworld.
Sincerely,
The VMworld 2008 Team
Training at VMworld
Anyone registered for training during the week prior to VMworld? Looks like the much awaited VMware Infrastructure: Design course is being offered for the first time. VMware is also putting off the VMware Infrastructure 3: Fast Track V3.5 during the same week.
