PCoIP graphic distortion

Comparing PCoIP to RDP it looks like one of the side effects is a reduction in graphic quality from the remote desktop. Has anyone noticed this as well? It look sort of like saving a jpeg file in photoshop at too low of a quality that you see pixelation and distortion.

It doesn't look like there is any adjustment for this either.

VMware View and SMS 2003

Good evening. I am running VMware View Premier 3.1.2 in a single AD domain and SMS 2003 with SP3. SMS automatically “scans” and “discovers” computers on the network and will install the SMS client software onto a workstation if it isn’t installed already. My parent VM is Windows XP with SP3 and it has the SMS 2003 advanced client installed on it. I’ve also allowed SMS to install all software applications that are needed on the parent VM. I have numerous users that will be working from this one image, so I plan to use an automated linked clone desktop pool. I have to do this because I have applications that won’t run on Windows Server (so I can’t put these apps on any of my TS servers).

My question is whether or not I am using VMware View correctly? I know that when I create the automated linked clone desktop pool and tell it to prepare the first 100 client VM’s, it will rename each linked cloned VM, change the MAC address and the IP address. However, because the SMS client is already installed on the parent VM it will be there on each client VM. SMS determines which system it is working on by assigning each system a GUID, and based upon this GUID SMS knows whether an application has been installed yet, etc. With the configuration that I have here, each linked clone VM will have the same SMS GUID. SMS also keeps track of MAC addresses, IP addresses, user ID, computer name, etc. and I have a feeling that SMS isn’t going to like all of the different information going to the same SMS GUID. Can anyone shed any light on this or share their experience with VMware View and SMS 2003 deployments?

I’ve created another automated linked clone desktop pool on the same network with the same “basic” configuration but without SMS involved yet, i.e., the parent VM is pristine without anything installed on it other than the VMware View agent. View Manager creates the client VM’s and does its thing, then SMS installs itself on each client VM, installs software, etc. However, this can take a few hours and thus we run the possibility that when users connect to this pool they could end up connecting to a client VM upon which SMS hasn’t installed everything yet (and thus the user won’t have access to all of the applications that they need). Is there is a way to prevent a linked clone VM from being “available for use” for a period of time or something? (BTW – this option may not work as I have read that I can’t have the SMS client installed on a parent VM, but maybe someone can shed some light on this also).

Any advice on using SMS 2003 with VMware View is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
LSILogic driver detection issue?
I have created a brand new template in vSphere Update 1 with Windows XP Service Pack 3 (slipstreamed into the install CD) with no other patches.

I used the LSILogic controller as my storage controller for the XP VM (which in vSphere 4 is not the default, I know). This was best practice in VDM2 thru View 3.

However, now after creating a linked clone with a User Data Disk, upon first login after a View Composer operation (either new VM creation, refresh, or recompose) the user is asked to give Administrator credentials (if they're a non-admin) in order to install the driver for the LSI Logic controller - because apparently now View Composer adds a second SCSI controller to add these extra disks.

This is obviously an issue - why are my users getting prompted for admin credentials to detect an add'l SCSI controller? Is this expected behavior? Or am I supposed to build my templates with IDE disks now?

Do i need an Active Directory? Sunray

This might sound like a silly question, but do i need an Active Directory if i am going to use Sunrays and VMware View to provide desktops to thin clients, with cards.

One card = One desktop

And if so is there a good guide to setting it all up. I can find plenty of infomation on the setup of sunray software and VMware View but nothing about setting up the users.

Many Thanks
Dirty Disconnect Causes "No Desktop Resources Available" error message for users.

Hello everyone, I have a question about the effect of a dirty disconnection from a View session. Many of our users, whether it's because of lack of user education or lost VPN connections, disconnect their sessions without properly logging off the Windows OS. When this happens their next connection attempt results in a standard "No desktop resources available" message. To an end user this often means a call to the helpdesk. My question is: how do we avoid something like this? Is there a setting that we can use in View manager to instantly reset a disconnected session or perhaps have the user return to where they left off? User education will resolve some of this, but lost VPN connetions won't. Please help!

PCoIP Video & Sound Quality

Like many others here, I was excited to get my hands on the software implementation of PCoIP. Having watched the youtube demo from some vmware engineers I full expected PCoIP to support a decent quality level of video playback and/or audio. My first experiences have found both to be really dissapointing. I am not rushing to blame this on VMware, as I want to double check everything I have done.

Has anyone else had any experiences, just playing youtube content or streaming music across a PCoIP client with View 4.0 yet?

win2k8 file server and 25 low/medium use XP desktops

I am spec'ing out a virtualized solution for a client and that solution with run a win2k8 standard edition server ( basically just serving files and hosting a few printers for about 25 users ) and will also host 25 virtualized desktops. The desktops are all XP and usage is low to low-medium - basically just email, word, excel, and a few users will use an accounting program ). So here are my questions:

1. Is it okay to put the win2k8 server and desktops all on a single piece of hardware? I was going to put in a server with 2 quad-core processors, 32GB RAM, and about 1.5TB space ( RAID 10 ). I ran sizing requirements against all workstations and server and this is a little overkill, but want room to grow.

2. Will VMWare View Premier allow me to install Win2k8 server on the ESX box as well as the workstations? I can't seem to find how many cores View Premier ( or the ESX that is bundled with it ) is licensed for or what any limitations may be.

Thanks in advance!
Recommendations for Profile manager

We're planning on using windows vista for virtual desktops on wyse stations. In our testing we are seeing how profiles take long to create and get applied.

What does anyone here recommend for profile management. I'd like to see the the whole process get speeded up. But would also like to see deployment and management. This is our first time looking at this so I don't know what kind of gotchas we may miss.

I've seen Appsense, RTO, Res Powerfuse and Script Start mentioned. Anyone have any feedback on these, and costs?

New View 4 Composer install won't find database.

So I can't get View 4 Composer to recognize my database during the install. My vCenter is running Windows 2008 64bit with SQL 2008 64bit. I'm using a DSN with the SQL Native Client 10. The DSN tests just fine. Reading the doc's I do see where Composer says that it's only compatible with Windows 2003 32bit. Surely VMware didn't screw people who have a fully supported version OS/SQL with vCenter, but isn't supported with Composer. Anyone else been successful with getting Composer to install with Windows 2008 64bit and SQL 2008 64bit?

Thanks
Hello,

When i want to add a desktop in view 4 i dont see any vm`s (only the folders) when i select:
type: automated desktop pool, persistent, "use linked clone"
and then under parent vm.

I configured a windows 7 x32 vm with the tools/agent installed.
And i made a snapshot while it was shutdown.

All other configuration options dont give any problems.
I have a problem regarding PCoIP and acces from WAN. No problem to connect to the connection server, but when trying to open the desktop, I'll be connected but the display ramins black. RDP is working well. I have created Firewall rules for this Desktop-VM on port 50002 TCP and UDP but still not working.
Does anybody has an Idea?
View Client disappears after login
Hi, I can connect via the web interface, but when establishing a connection via the 14Mb View client, I get the Blue Title Bar for the remote desktop for about 10 seconds with a black inside, then the client disappears without any error at all.

The web interface gives me a chance to authenticate against the VM, but the 14Mb client does not - maybe its passing bad credentials, then timing out?

Is there a way to turn on logging and see why this is happening on the client side?

thanks
VM View, SunRay2 terminals - Sun Server needed ?

Just a quick general question here ;

We're in the process of planning our new VM View system, we plan to use SunRay 2 terminals to connect to the users desktops.

My question is;

Do we need to purchase the SunServer software so that the SunRays2's can connect to VM View ? ie SunServer is acting like a broker/bridge to connect the terminals to VM View ?

Thanks in advance..

How to Backup a View thin provisioned disk
Hello together,

Just want to know how you do a backup from you View Machines? In my opinion it does not make sense to backup these machines because if one is broken the connection manager creates a new one. But what can you do if some customer wants to do a backup via VCB? Is it possible?

View all desktops in a pool

Hi,

We have a test environment where virtual desktops are being used for regression testing. The users need the ability to login to multiple desktops simultaneously and run the scripts. But currently the portal only displays the pool and once the users clicks it connects the user to only one desktop. The users have to use VNC to connect to rest of the machines. Is it possible to configure a View Pool so that when a user logs into the portal, instead of being presented only with a list of pools, the user can also view all the desktops in a pool.

Thanks.
Do I read correctly that 64-bit OS (XP, Vista and Win7) as VDI-desktop and VDI-client are not supported? Please fix this! In the coming release in H1 2010 that gives Win7 support, please include 64-bit support! It's really about time! Also support for Win2008 in connection server plz!
Problems running some MSI's

We are packaging our apps as MSI's using ThinApp 4.03 build 3313, then dropping the installer packages on C: and and running the installer from there. We are getting a meassage that says "The same or newer version of the "specific software (Dartfish in this case)" (VMware Thinapp) is already installed. This has also happened with SPSS 17. The weird thing is we have a base image of the machine a Dell Optiplex 745 with XP pro installed and some base apps (that could not be thinapped) like Java, iTunes, Quicktime, Flash etc. installed in the image. At first I recieved the meassage when trying to run the Dartfish MSI and the Inspiration 8 MSI, so I pushed out a new image to start over and the Inspiration 8 MSI ran fine but I still recieve the message with Dartfish and now SPSS 17. We have other machines out there running these same MSI's without a problem?? I included a snopshot of the meassage below. Has anyone seen this, if so, have you found a solution?

Multiple view connection servers?

I am in a school system, we have students logging into xp desktops. We have a limited number of office 2k7 licenses that I want to deploy in a lab environment. So when a student is in that classroom they get the desktop that has office on it.

If I just create another pool with office I cannot stop students from accessing that desktop from another classroom, if I create dummy users and entitle that pool to the dummy users then my students don't get their network drives mapped to my documents.

If I could point those thin clients to another connection server I could provision a pool just for that classroom. Can I do this and then point that connection server at my existing infrastructure client and server pools or do I need to have separate everything?

Any other ideas?

Migrating user profiles from Terminal Services to WinXP on View 4

We have 50 users with profiles on Win2003 Terminal Services. The hardware is old and slow and they are using their local PCs more since the terminal sessions are slow. We are building a VMWare View environment (soon to be v4) to create a pool of Virtual PCs (Win XP or possibly Win7).

Does anyone have any tips/tools for migrating the TS profiles to the Virtual PC profile? At present, we see this as a manual process, one user at a time.

Getting RDP not PCoIP with View 4

I've installed the View 4 Agent into an XP SP3, fully windows updated, VM with VDM_VC_MANAGED_Agent=0 specified since I am not (yet) using vCenter with View 4 and with the PCoIP server installation option selected. Also installed v4 Connection Server into a W2K3 x86 VM and created an individual desktop with this XP VM with PCoIP set as the default protocol. All VMs hosted on ESX 4u1.

When I connect, as a non-admin domain user, I get an RDP, not PCoIP, connection as confirmed by the connection server's "Active Sessions" and a qwinsta in the View session. This is with the View 4 client (without offline) installed on a Vista SP2 x86 machine.

I can't see anything obviously wrong in the logs on the client.

Anybody got any ideas how I can get PCoIP going or is this not allowed unless using vCenter, although I can't quite see why that would be?

Message was edited by: guyrleech

Previously I was connecting via IE8 so I've just tried with the client directly, ensuring I select PCoIP as the protocol, and it is now shows the connection as "wdcon" when I run qwinsta whereas when I was getting RDP it said "rdpwd" and says I am on the console, not an rdp winstation.

The connection server is also now showing me as having a PCoIP connection so this looks like it might be a limitation of coming in via a browser rather than directly through the client.

View 4.0 composer 2.0 (Upgrade/Clean Install) operating system requirements
Now that VMware has released View 4.0, an am surprised to see that View Composer (2.0) is supported only on the 32-bit version of either Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. (FOR UPGRADING ONLY)

View composer must be installed on the VCenter server, so that limits us to only use Win2003 SP1 (32bit) for our Vcenter 4.01, because I sure as hell am not going to install it on Windows XP.

Can anyone at VMware confirm if there is any other operating system versions, (Like Windows 2008?) that we can use for the Vcenter 4.x + View Composer 2.x besides the above two? I took this information right out of page 10 of http://www.vmware.com/pdf/view40_upgrade_guide.pdf.

I'm planning to do a clean install, and according to the quickstart guide: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/view40_quickstart.pdf , View Composer is supported on the following 32‐bit platforms:
 Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 or higher
 Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 or higher

Since this says "or higher", How about Win2003 32bit R2? Or just regular Win2003. I presume it doesn't matter if it's the Standard/Enterprise or Datacenter version of Win2003.

Is Thin Provisioning via vSphere instead of View Composer Possible?

With View 3, we used linked clones in order to get thin provisioned disks. However, for a number of reasons, Recompose just doesn't work for us. I'm wondering if View 4, along with vSphere 4.0 Update 1, will allow me to deploy "full clones" that have thin disks (courtesy of vSphere).

I know it's possible to do this with vSphere alone, but does anyone know whether this will work (or not work) with View - either with View-based 'individual desktops' or, preferably, with automated desktop pools?

Installed the view agent (and de svga driver)
Configured everything.

When i start the view client everything goes fine, i can select the vm and connect to it.
But the screen just stays black, (i get the view client topbar) and after a couple of seconds the client is completly closed with no error what so ever.

My client os is also windows 7.
Correct Install/upgrade Procedure with View4

With View 4 released I am trying to find information on how to best proceed in moving to Vsphere and View 4. We are currently running esx 3.5 u4 and Vcenter 2.5 and View 3.012 with view connection brokers. We have some linked clones that I don't want to break. I would like to do a clean install of Vsphere on the hosts. In what order would you suggest I update things and View4 needs Vsphere however I don't want to break my clones.

Ideas or thoughts would be great.

Thanks,

I had an idication from a Wyse tech that 6.5 (which is in beta) would be needed. The tech also said they didn't expect WTOS 6.5 to be released until the end of the year (raise red flag here), but they couldn't be sure about that.
Update Manager plugin not registering with client

I just recently upgraded my environment from ESX 3.5 U4 with vCenter 2.5 U5 to vSphere U1. I upgraded VUM to 4.0 as well during the upgrade. Now, when I connect to vCenter with the VIClient I am unable to get the VUM plugin to become active. It shows up in the list of available plugins and when I click the install link it installs the plugin, goes to 100% and then goes right back to available status, just like it looked before the install. VUM itself seems to be running as it is download updates, but the plugin cannot be registered correctly with the client for some reason.

I have rebuilt the environment from the ground up except for my vCenter database as well as installing the client on other machines and uninstalling VUM and manually deleting the directories on the client. No dice.

If anyone has any ideas of what the logical next step would be, please drop me a line!
I am capturing CVF6.6 (Compaq Visual Fortran v6.6) with Thinapp 4.0.4 and the captured app can complile a Fortran 90 code and run the compiled executable.

BUT the captured app cannot debug. The problem is that it cannot open the compiled exe file with the error message shown in attached file.

Any suggestions and ideas will be highly appreciated.
Computers can't logon to domain after rebalancing
We are facing some weird problem after rebalancing virtual machines - at the end of the process the machines can't logon to the domain (Windows error message - can't find domain). Manually logon to each machine and re-join it to the domain solves the problem, but, well, you know...

Any idea? We are uisng version 3.5.

Locking Icons in Place

I know this isn't a huge deal but I was wondering if there is a way to lock the icons in place on the main template so when the desktops are deployed and logged into from the view client they are in the same exact place as they are on the template? Is this some sort of group policy setting?

Thanks.

Help with small network issue - hopefully!!

So I have deployed one desktop in my pool. I can connect to the internet with the master image/template, and I confirmed I can connect to the internet on the machine I am using the view client. But for some reason when I connect to the view desktop it doesn't get out to the internet. Any suggestions?

Very frustrating as it had worked a few days ago and no changes have been made that I am aware of.

Outlook 2010 Beta 2 with ThinApp 4.0.4
As many probably have read, M$ released Office 2010 Beta 2 public a couple of days ago.

We use Exchange/Outlook 2007 in our organization but an upgrade to Exchange 2010 is ongoing.

I tried to thinapp outlook 2010 to run it sidebyside with outlook 2007.

But I just end up with a self-repair dialog immediatly after the profile has been setup.

First I thought the error could be solved by following this blog article http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2008/10/how-to-thinap-1.html adapting it to office14.

But it didn't.

I packed on a clean win xp sp3, no vmware tools or dotnet runtime etc. Anyone succeded in this?
I attached a picture of the error which also has the last two lines on the batch file, if you press continue on this error message "3" times the build batch file finishes and the application virtualization is complete. I can open the app and use it, only thing is I'm wondering why this error message keeps coming up. I changed many settings in the "package.ini", tried differet versions, tried different operating systems (XP SP3 and Windows 7), and I tried many different apps. No matter what I do it this message always appears.
Packaging IE 6 as a published application
Hello.

My manager asked me if were possible to use Thinappto create a packeage to deploy IE 6 (pre configured with a specific URL) as published application.

Our users use a proprietary web based application that only works with Internet Explorer version 6. This is rather limiting as it prevents the desktop team from upgrading their desktop images to a newer version of IE or another borwser altogether.

Can Thinapp accomplish this or any opther VMWare product for that matter?

Regards,
We are packaging our apps as MSI's using ThinApp 4.03 build 3313, then dropping the installer packages on C: and and running the installer from there. We are getting a meassage that says "The same or newer version of the "specific software (Dartfish in this case)" (VMware Thinapp) is already installed. I included a snopshot of the meassage below. Has anyone seen this, if so, have you found a solution. This has also happened with SPSS 17. The weird thing is we have a base image of the machine a Dell Optiplex 745 with XP pro installed and some base apps (that could not be thinapped) like Java, iTunes, Quicktime, Flash etc. and at first I recieved the meassage when trying to run the Dartfish MSI and the Inspiration 8 MSI, so I pushed out a new image to start over and the Inspiration 8 MSI ran fine but I still recieve the message with Dartfish and now SPSS 17.

VMWare View single sign on with no prompts of available desktop

I am supporting a pre-sales customer that is using a linux based HP thin client, t5545 build 31, to connect through a View 2.x server to a XP Pro VM.
This customer reboots the VMs everynight while users are logged on.

The HP thin client does has a auto reconnect option, but it prompts for available desktops and must select and click Connect to get the session again.

Is there a way to have users auto reconnect and keep trying until desktops are available and just send to one when it comes on line automatically rather than getting prompted to choose available desktops?
VMware View Upgrade?
Hi

I have been using View 3 for a while and have a good working setup, providing desktop to thin clients.

It has become a requirement to move my current physical severs onto my Vmware setup, but according to the EULA the View bundle is for Desktop use only.

What would i need to upgrade to allow me to run server workloads and still be covered under the view licence and not breaking the EULA.

I release that something might need to be purchased or upgraded.

Also i relise that a whole new set of licences and / or hardware may need to be purchased
can you upgrade an old thinapp to thinapp 4.0.4
I have some apps I did on an older version of thin app..
so they dont work on windows 7. I no longer have the package to just re compile, So Id have to repackage again.

There was mention at vmworld this year of having a tool to upgrade the older thin apps to the new version of thinapp that would
be windows 7 compatible.

Any one know of this tool or how I can take an older thinapp package and upgrade it to 4.0.4.xx and hopefully get it working on win 7 without having to repackage the app!

I'm able to get firefox 3.0.15 to upgrade to 3.5.5 but while I've enabled "AppSyncClearSandboxOnUpdate=0" it maintains none of the user settings. No bookmarks, themes, etc.
feature comparison between View3 and View4
Hello,

I am seeking a document which can describe new features of View4 and it's comparison with Vmware View3.

Infact my major concern is to address Soft phones issues, becasue we were unable to use bi-directional voice in view3. I know this issue is more or less related to RDP 6.0 which doesn't support sound upstream and microsoft has catered this issue in RDP 7.0. But again there may be alot of enhancements related to this problem.

Thanks in Advance
Adobe CS3 Design Premium and FlexNET woes...
Hi, back again... after sorting out the .MSI and CAB issues I've suddenly run into a new problem. We have the Design Premium "bundle" (which means there's no way for me to not install all the extra bloat Adobe forces on us) and it uses a FlexNET service for licensing (I believe).

Here's my issue,

I installed it, thinapped it, built it and ran it. All worked fine.

I then use the MSI to distribute the software to my users... which is where the problem comes into play...

Apparently, the ThinApp can't register/run/verify/whatever the licensing service as a USER.

If I make my users local Administrators all the Adobe CS3 thinapps run just fine.

If a normal non-privileged user (or power user) tries to run any of the Adobe CS3 thinapps it fails. (Licensing for this product has stopped working... please reinstall or contact administrator).

DLL execution error with SmartPlant3D
We are evaluating the possible deployment of the Intergraph application, SmartPlant 3D, with the Thinapp virtualization technology.

We use, for testing purposes, the evaluation version that it is availably in the web page.

In all the cases that we execute the virtual application we get an error of not found DLL (perfkrnl.dll), but the file is in such directory.

We tried to solve the problem making changes to the windows system path during the capture process without sucessfull results. Also, we use the parameter ExternalDLLs, in BuildOptions of the Package.ini file with the same results. And finally, we try to copy the dll file in the %SystemSystem% folder.

What we can do to solve this problem?

Anybody are using the Intergraph program with Thinapp encapsulation?

Thanks.

I am having an issue where on my template I only have one printer installed, but when I do the desktop pool and it creates the desktops and I log in with the View Client it adds a copy of the original printer installed and the Microsoft XPS Document Writer and sets that Document Writer as the default. Is there anyway I can prevent this. These are being used in a public area and I need that one printer to be the only one there.
I have installed the tools in the same way as I do on physical XP cients but on the virtualised PC message tracking always fails with:

Both machines are members of the domain and have the same group policy applied.

Message tracking on the physical PC works without any problem.

After we make a capture of the application installation, we always get an empty HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.txt file, and always with the same size 68760KB. If we edit the file with the Notepad++ editor we see that the file content is a lot of NUL characters.

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER.txt and HKEY_USERS.txt are correct.

We are using a virtual machine in Vmware Workstation 7, with a Windows XP SP3.

We tried to use the wizard and also the command prompt "snapshot.exe".
View Client 3.0.1 - Disabling the "X"

We're setting up a test environment to see if going virtual with our call center is feasible, and so far so good. However, I was wondering if anyone knew of a registry setting or any other method for disabling the "X" on the menu bar that disconnects the user. This is problematic as our call center reps use Avaya IP agent (software based VOIP) and "accidentally" clicking the "X" will disconnect them from the host machine and subsequently drop any call they're currently on. Our test machines are all using XP Professional. Thin clients may be an option down the road but we already have desktops in place that we'd like to use. Appreciate any assistance, thanks!

Does Vmware View Support multi processor type ?

Hi everyone !

We are currently using Vmware view manager with 2 esxi. We are recently having more and more vm in use by user. We are thinking of buying a new server (since we have a unused licence).

Our two existing Esxi are installed on two Dell Poweredge Intel Xeon E5440 (2 x 4 core at 2.8ghz)
We have some really good price for a Dell that is having an (2 x 6 core) AMD processor. Does it work ?

We are thinking that it might cause some trouble because of the Vmotion... that is moving VM from an Intel to an AMD...

If i'm not clear enough, fell free to ask !

Thanks !

Office 2007 problem
Guys,

I am pretty new to ThinApp but I have followed instructions on virtualizing Office 2007 using ThinApp. I got my package build and then installed it on a laptop.

Laptop runs 64-bit WinXP. Office 2007 is a 32-bit.

Here's my issue: when I launch Outlook, I see Windows Installer screens that is "configuring Office 2007". It runs it several times and eventually goes away. Same thing happens when I send an email.

What do I need to do to fix this as it is highly annoying?

Thank you in advance for your help!

The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available

Hey all - Admittedly, I'm new to the VMWare View environment so forgive my ignorance. The problem that I'm having involves a small virtual pool that was recently setup at my company. There are two Virtual Connection Managers (VCM) but there is not a load balancer between them yet. The thin clients are manually pointed to either VCM-01 or VCM-02 to establish a connection. After receiving calls about issues logging in, here is what I've observed:

Certain users can only log into one of the VCM's. For instance, I can log into the webportal on VCM-01 as a certain user and I will receive the "The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available" message. However, I can log into the VCM-02 webportal as that user and it allows access with no issues. Other users can log into both VCM's without a problem.

Does anyone understand why this would happen? I don't believe it's an entitlement issue...the entitlements are pointing to a security group which contains every user.

Thanks for the help,

Simfatic Forms hangs when ThinApped

So, I've been trying to ThinApp Simfatic Forms 3 (http://www.simfatic.com/). Seems to work fine, untill one opens a new project - whence it hangs.

Has anyone tried this? It's captured on Windows XP SP3 (and tested to work during the capture process) using ThinApp 4.0.3.

Rebuilding it using ThinApp 4.0.4 generates an error instantly after ThinApp loads the program

AppName: simfaticforms.exe AppVer: 3.0.5.175 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

Looks like it didn't take kindly to being virtualized...

We are using Wyse V10L with VMware View 3.1 and linked clones

The master image has serial ports and when connecting to the master via RDP from a Wyse client - serial ports are OK

However, any clone created from the master show no serial ports in device manager

I have tried multiple masters to eliminate any issue with a single build (XP SP3)

Is there no support for serial ports in a linked clone?
I have about 6 linked clones in a persistent pool that I want to make standalone VM's that don't tie up my view license's. Is there an easy way to turn these into stand alone vm's or is it difficult? I thought I could just clone them, but wasn''t sure if there was an eaiser way.
Hello All....

Just installed so I'm pretty green... I have everything working okay so far but would like to lock down the client as I have a locked down desktop in a kiosk type setting. I have reviewed the GPO policies (loaded them into AD) but might be missing something. Ideally can I set it so once in the VM that tool bar along the top is just not displayed? Also after the initial login you get a second screen prompting which machine you would like to connect and also for a Display setting (Full Screen, Multi mon, Window) can I do away with that screen some how as all my User - to VM's are a 1 to 1 relationship so user A always logs into machine A etc....

Thank you everyone

Start view client silent
We have been testing VMWare view extensively to run on a kiosk type configuration. Thanks to the very informative posts here, we are able to auto start the client to log on, select a image from the pool and log itself on the view server without interaction from the user.

I had been looking at the options available when starting the view client app from the guest pc, i could not find any mention of having it start silent. Is this option available in starting the client? We would like to "hide" the windows that come up when the app start (ie, view log on screen, etc.)

Has anyone figured out a way within the start up option for view client to do this?

Thanks
Office 2007 is halting VDI (Memory consumption issue?) - Suggestions for troubleshooting issue?

It seems that when our end-users do a lot of copying+pasting when using PowerPoint 07, Excel 07, or Word 07, it stores directly in the Office Clipboard (it stores up to 24 items), and this causes their VDI Workstation to freeze up. Essentially, their taskbar becomes inactive, but they can still (slowly) navigate through Windows Explorer. My current resolution is just to end the OFFLB.exe or Office application process (taskkill /PID ### /F) so they can continue with their work.

However, this is just one scenario of memory consumption that happens. This also occurs when using this free graphics viewer called irfanview to resize an image, or crop it, etc. Also happens when navigating through open windows in Windows Explorer.

I guess I would like recommendations on how to tackle this issue.

I thought it might have been a memory balloon issue as referenced in these two articles:

http://www.vi3book.com/index.php/articles-mainmenu-62/mgmt-and-monitoring-mainmenu-68/96-memory-behavior-when-vm-limits-are-set

http://www.van-lieshout.com/2009/04/esx-memory-management-part-1/

I guess it wasn't. So, I guess I'm rather clueless on how to tackle this issue since it could be a lot of things. Any tools or tips would be great

Our production environment is not using VMWare View. However, we are using Virtual Center 2.5 and VDI.

We have about 40+ Windows XP VMs right now, with essentially the same template (VMware Virtual Platform):

CPU = Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5345 @ 2.33 Ghz x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~2333 Mhz

Memory = 512 MB of RAM

<strike>Total Physical Memory = 512.00 MB; Available Physical Memory = 117.37 MB; Total Virtual Memory = 2.00 GB; Available Virtual Memory = 1.96 GB; Page File Space = 1.22 GB; Page File = C:\pagefile.sys</strike>

HDD = 10 GB (VMware Virtual Disk SCSI Disk Device)

SCSI and RAID controllers = LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series, w/1020/1030
Specific Thin to VM
Good Morning,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way I can only allow certain thin clients to access certain VM's... Right now the thin boots right to the view client and they can enter in any user name (factory floor stations just generic user accounts with no passwords so P101, P102).. I know I can lock the user name field on the thin client using a gp but of course I'm trying to keep the thin client completely generic... The Vm's are setup so they can print certain labels from certain areas if all they have to do is logout of one and into another they will get lazy I'm sure.

I don't really see a way but thought I would ask. If I do have to get specific user names locked into a gp on the thins any tips on how I maintain the thin images? I was looking to setup the master / ftp thing.. I of course don't have a budget for any management software : ).

ThinApp doesn't support Window Shell Extension application well?
this is the first time i try ThinApp, i tried to capture the installation of TortoiseSVN1.6.6 ,here is what i did:

1. open ThinApp, did a pre installation scan

2. install TortoiseSVN,

3. did the Post installation scan

4. check all the exe files ThinApp find for me (some exe are not selected by default), set TortoiseSVN.exe as the main file conatining data)

5. build file(not msi format, not compressed)

then i uninstall the tortoisesvn, restart my computer , try to run the TortoiseSVN.exe ThinApp has built for me, but there's no tortoisesvn menu entries in the windows explorer context menu. Anything wrong in my steps?

Hi,

I am a new user for VMware. When I install the guest operating system (WinXP professional) to a virtual machine, the error shows "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer."

I am not sure that is ESX server setting issue or Virutal Machine setting issue.

Does someone here hlep me to fix this issue?

Many thanks in advance.

ThinApp Client Only Apps
I have a couple ERP applications (Infor Visual Manufacturing and Sage Business Works), which only install a client side of the app and basically the shortcut target on a users desktop would point to \\server\share\app.exe. The problem I have when I try to execute this thinapp I get the following unrecoverable error: Unable to open \\server\share\app.exe

I'm not sure if apps like this can be thinapp'ed? I have had success with several other apps which do a full local install, but these two bring new challenges. Any help is appreciated as I'm brand new to the ThinApp world, but loving it so far!

VMware ThinApp 4.0.4, Windows 7 x64, and Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010
Just posting this as a Windows 7 compatibility FYI:

Using VMware ThinApp 4.0.4, I've created a couple of packages for Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010. One package includes the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and the other doesn't. Both packages were created on Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and run properly on this platform. However, both packages crash immediately when launched on Windows 7 x64.

Manage Add-ons within IE

My question is can managed add-ons within IE be Thinapped and streamed across the network.

Perfect example is Flash v10.

Just a little background. In my office we are using VMView with Linked Clones. The pools are configured to use persistent settings so the same user hits the same box when signing back into View. Well not everyone is using Flash and we want to run these Pools as lean as possible (pretty bad when you start targeting IE add-ons). But if the user goes to a site that needs it then it will pull that add-on across the network.

Any help is appreciated,
