any further versions of VCAP planned?

Hi,

we appreciate the usage of VCAP more and more while the number of VMs in our two VCs is rising and more and more application admins want to have console access to their VMs. Because we have a lot of custom fields it would be very nice if we could filter/search using these fields.
Is it planned to make any further improvements on VCAP?

Regards,

One of my 3 Virtual centers is not showing any data, it is using the same login info from the other VC that is working. I can get to the /sdk as well from a different window. Any ideals?

VCs with zero data

I have 5 VirtualCenter servers, each with 600 - 1100 virtual machines. When I put all 5 host names in the config.xml file, the two largest VC servers show 0 for hosts, virtual machines, etc. When I have just the individual VirtualCenter servers in the config.xml file, the information is correct. Where can I look to find out why all of the data is not importing, especially since you can add up to 10 VC servers? I have messed with the <refresh> and <timeout> settings but didn't seem to help anything. Any ideas?

Error no VC servers showing up

I have setup the VCAP on Windows 2003 using Apache/TomCat6.

I have modified the config.xml file to include my two virtual center servers.

When I log into VCAP, using the same domain credentails as I would
use to log in directly to the VC server via the VI client I get no list
of servers.

But if I look on the VI Client I can see sessions under my username contected to the VC Server.

I am using the linux version and within config.xml am connecting as https with a non standard port of 4443. (this may be the reason?)

Everything else in VCAP works, but just the console doesnt. Getting the following error once the VMware remote Console window pops up:

"Error Opening the remote virtual machine 192.***.**.*** A4443\vm-1057: The Hostname could not be resolved."

Any ideas?

Cheers.
Enable SSL ?
Who are the Tomcat Guru's in here?

I wish to enable SSL for the VCAP main page, that's on port 80, presumably get it going on 443.... SSL is already enabled for the administrative port, but the documentation only says "read this apache.org" document to enable SSL for everything else. So presumably the SSL key generation steps can be fixed and I only need to edit server.xml.

Too much for my small brain...
Hi,

I am trying to get the Remote Console work on a RHEL 5.2 x32.
I could download and install the .XPI add on, it is listed in Firefox's add-on as installed.
When I try to start it to get a Remote Console toward a server, I get no answer and the following error at the console:

VMRC:ConnectWithSession: attempt to connect with invalid viewer delegate!

Any idea?
So far, the Remote Console on Windows in IE 7 has been good, my Linux attempts all disastrous (I am not that good at Linux, I might have missed some config).
Hello,

I have had a quick look at the product but have noticed two glaring omissions in terms of fucntionality. Where is the ability to manage snapshots ( create, delete, revert ) and where is the Virtual Machines and Template view? Did I just miss them? If not will these be included? Everything else looks really good but with the above it won't really work in our environment.

Thanks!
No Shuitdown nor Reboot for running VMs with VMware Tools running

Hi,

Besides the already mentionned Snapshot Management being missing, one major annoyance: the capability to shutdown or restart running VMs with VMware Tools running. I use this feature a lot to manage servers and turn them off / reboot them without logging on them. I don't want to power them off, of Reset them (which we can), just initiate that nice shutdown / reboot through VMware tools.

Other than that, it's a joy.

Thanks.
I've installed the appliance and have IP working. I am able to log into the appliance as root over the web interface.
I've configured my virtual centers by name within the config.xml and verified the DNS servers listed in the web are correct.
What is the proper format to pass domain credentials?
I've tried domain\user, user, and user@domain but always failed to authenticate.
Are there logs to review on the host?
Trying to use VMware-ovftool-0.9-62566 to install the OVF package and got the following message: "Extra, required XML element found: Product".
OSX/iPhone/Blackberry
Wow, can i just say - Finally an almost native vCenter client for my Mac!!! Great idea and excellent use of the sdk VMware. (Side note: With FluidApp making a Site specific browser you can almost not tell the difference!)

Second, remote administration is always a requested feature, and now it's a very close thing here - I've not got my guys to test a Blackberry browser yet, but my iPhone browser seems to not want me to be able to enter username/pass. I know it's probably a low priority but thru VPN this would be a great way to be able to manage-on-the-run.

Can anyone else confirm the iPhone browser issue? It works swimmingly thru safari on the desktop, but it does come up with an error in the iPhone debug:

http://<address>/javascript/vmrcplugin_ff.js ReferenceError: Can't find variable: Components
Hi,

I downloaded the VM Appliance as it was easy to do.
Configured my config.xlm file with the 2 VirtualCenter we have.

First comment: in the bottom part of the config.xlm file are the path to the VIC installation on Windows, one path per version, all hardcoded with "C:\Program Files...". We are using default path, one of my VC is on C: (no issue) but the other is on E:... Shall I worry?

Second point, once I restart the appliance, I logon (root / vmware) and see my 2 VCs. But both of those display in red: "Login failed due to a bad username or password.".
My 2 VCs uses different set of usernames and password; none matching root / vmware. So how can the VC Admin Portal connect to my VCs without knowing usernames / passwords? What did I miss?

Thanks,
Strange network behavior
Hi

A very strange problem that might not be VC Admin Portal related, but still I thought I post it here.

I downloaded and imported the OVF into my VC 2.5u2, running on ESX 3.5u2. After booting the VM, it received an IP from my dhcp server. Strange thing is I can't ping the VM from my workstation. When trying to find out what is wrong I noticed that I can ping the Admin Portal VM from all my other VMs and from the Admin portal to all other VMs. But from my physical systems, I'm unable to ping ONLY this Admin Portal VM and from the Admin Portal VM I can ping no other physical system.

Very strange.... Except for this VM, all other systems (virtual and physical) can ping each other. Any clues?

Accessing the portal's internal website also works only from other VMs.
Reporting?
I don't remember the answer to this one. Will there be a reporting feature of this for GA? I am connecting many VCs to this and would like to export an inventory of all VMs in all VCs (rather than connecting to each VC with VIclient and exporting the list).

Thanks!

future feature
Hi, I've just downloaded this and love it. I do have a small request though, which will most likely turn into a lot of work for you guys! Could we have this accept different credentials for different vCenters please?

I work in a network operation center supporting many varied networks. Each of these has it's own domain and different set of credentials. I was half expecting the ability to do this when I saw the portal, but (unless I've missed it) it just forwards whatever I logon with to all servers.

Could you also clarify whether the credentials are forwarde, or if the VCAP authenticates and uses an access token to open the VCs? If it passes on the credentials, is this secure enough? If I add servers in different domains, would I want my username and password forwarded to those domains?

keep up the good work!

Welcome to the VCAP Technology Preview site. To get started, please take a look at the VirtualCenter Administrator Portal (VCAP) Overview document as well as the Installation Guide that spells out the compatibility requirements for the release. Next, download the product, take it for a spin and let us know what you think.

Thanks for the interest,
