Can VMware ACE be used as a virtual machine with ThinApp?

I use THinapp Version 4.0.

When i Capture i turne the Box Out. -> I copy the Package to another PC an the Update checkbox turned on in the Package.

Can anyone Help me to find the Registry Keys ore the Files wich have thif Information. +

Problems running some MSI's

We are packaging our apps as MSI's using ThinApp 4.03 build 3313, then dropping the installer packages on C: and and running the installer from there. We are getting a meassage that says "The same or newer version of the "specific software (Dartfish in this case)" (VMware Thinapp) is already installed. This has also happened with SPSS 17. The weird thing is we have a base image of the machine a Dell Optiplex 745 with XP pro installed and some base apps (that could not be thinapped) like Java, iTunes, Quicktime, Flash etc. installed in the image. At first I recieved the meassage when trying to run the Dartfish MSI and the Inspiration 8 MSI, so I pushed out a new image to start over and the Inspiration 8 MSI ran fine but I still recieve the message with Dartfish and now SPSS 17. We have other machines out there running these same MSI's without a problem?? I included a snopshot of the meassage below. Has anyone seen this, if so, have you found a solution?

Problem in Capturing CVF6.6 - Cannot Debug

I am capturing CVF6.6 (Compaq Visual Fortran v6.6) with Thinapp 4.0.4 and the captured app can complile a Fortran 90 code and run the compiled executable.

BUT the captured app cannot debug. The problem is that it cannot open the compiled exe file with the error message shown in attached file.

Any suggestions and ideas will be highly appreciated.

Outlook 2010 Beta 2 with ThinApp 4.0.4

As many probably have read, M$ released Office 2010 Beta 2 public a couple of days ago.

We use Exchange/Outlook 2007 in our organization but an upgrade to Exchange 2010 is ongoing.

I tried to thinapp outlook 2010 to run it sidebyside with outlook 2007.

But I just end up with a self-repair dialog immediatly after the profile has been setup.

First I thought the error could be solved by following this blog article http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2008/10/how-to-thinap-1.html adapting it to office14.

But it didn't.

I packed on a clean win xp sp3, no vmware tools or dotnet runtime etc. Anyone succeded in this?

Any ThinApp + VMware View Desktop + HP T5545 Linux Client.

Has anyone used this combination before?

View Connection Manager 3.1.1
Desktop Pool is running Windows XP SP3.
Connecting with HP T5545 running HP M5ST0031 image.
We also have VMware View Client 3.1 Rev. A release 11 Sept 2009.

All I am looking to know is if you have used Caps Lock before with a ThinApp. I need to know if there are any "anomalies".

Error message at end of build: tlink.exe - No Disk

I attached a picture of the error which also has the last two lines on the batch file, if you press continue on this error message "3" times the build batch file finishes and the application virtualization is complete. I can open the app and use it, only thing is I'm wondering why this error message keeps coming up. I changed many settings in the "package.ini", tried differet versions, tried different operating systems (XP SP3 and Windows 7), and I tried many different apps. No matter what I do it this message always appears.

Packaging IE 6 as a published application

Hello.

My manager asked me if were possible to use Thinappto create a packeage to deploy IE 6 (pre configured with a specific URL) as published application.

Our users use a proprietary web based application that only works with Internet Explorer version 6. This is rather limiting as it prevents the desktop team from upgrading their desktop images to a newer version of IE or another borwser altogether.

Can Thinapp accomplish this or any opther VMWare product for that matter?

can you upgrade an old thinapp to thinapp 4.0.4

I have some apps I did on an older version of thin app..
so they dont work on windows 7. I no longer have the package to just re compile, So Id have to repackage again.

There was mention at vmworld this year of having a tool to upgrade the older thin apps to the new version of thinapp that would
be windows 7 compatible.

Any one know of this tool or how I can take an older thinapp package and upgrade it to 4.0.4.xx and hopefully get it working on win 7 without having to repackage the app!

Sandbox AppSync update question

I've been testing AppSync the last few days and I'm having one issue I am unable to reolve. It appears it doesnt' maintain my exisiting sandbox.

I'm able to get firefox 3.0.15 to upgrade to 3.5.5 but while I've enabled "AppSyncClearSandboxOnUpdate=0" it maintains none of the user settings. No bookmarks, themes, etc.

Both packages share the same primary data container name.
Both packages share the same sandbox name.

What am I missing? Everything else is working as expected.

Adobe CS3 Design Premium and FlexNET woes...

Hi, back again... after sorting out the .MSI and CAB issues I've suddenly run into a new problem. We have the Design Premium "bundle" (which means there's no way for me to not install all the extra bloat Adobe forces on us) and it uses a FlexNET service for licensing (I believe).

Here's my issue,

I installed it, thinapped it, built it and ran it. All worked fine.

I then use the MSI to distribute the software to my users... which is where the problem comes into play...

Apparently, the ThinApp can't register/run/verify/whatever the licensing service as a USER.

If I make my users local Administrators all the Adobe CS3 thinapps run just fine.

If a normal non-privileged user (or power user) tries to run any of the Adobe CS3 thinapps it fails. (Licensing for this product has stopped working... please reinstall or contact administrator).

Any ideas?

DLL execution error with SmartPlant3D

We are evaluating the possible deployment of the Intergraph application, SmartPlant 3D, with the Thinapp virtualization technology.

We use, for testing purposes, the evaluation version that it is availably in the web page.

In all the cases that we execute the virtual application we get an error of not found DLL (perfkrnl.dll), but the file is in such directory.

We tried to solve the problem making changes to the windows system path during the capture process without sucessfull results. Also, we use the parameter ExternalDLLs, in BuildOptions of the Package.ini file with the same results. And finally, we try to copy the dll file in the %SystemSystem% folder.

What we can do to solve this problem?

Anybody are using the Intergraph program with Thinapp encapsulation?

Empty HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.txt

After we make a capture of the application installation, we always get an empty HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.txt file, and always with the same size 68760KB. If we edit the file with the Notepad++ editor we see that the file content is a lot of NUL characters.

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER.txt and HKEY_USERS.txt are correct.

We are using a virtual machine in Vmware Workstation 7, with a Windows XP SP3.

We tried to use the wizard and also the command prompt "snapshot.exe".

Any ideas?

Office 2007 problem

Guys,

I am pretty new to ThinApp but I have followed instructions on virtualizing Office 2007 using ThinApp. I got my package build and then installed it on a laptop.

Laptop runs 64-bit WinXP. Office 2007 is a 32-bit.

Here's my issue: when I launch Outlook, I see Windows Installer screens that is "configuring Office 2007". It runs it several times and eventually goes away. Same thing happens when I send an email.

What do I need to do to fix this as it is highly annoying?

Simfatic Forms hangs when ThinApped

So, I've been trying to ThinApp Simfatic Forms 3 (http://www.simfatic.com/). Seems to work fine, untill one opens a new project - whence it hangs.

Has anyone tried this? It's captured on Windows XP SP3 (and tested to work during the capture process) using ThinApp 4.0.3.

Rebuilding it using ThinApp 4.0.4 generates an error instantly after ThinApp loads the program

AppName: simfaticforms.exe AppVer: 3.0.5.175 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

Looks like it didn't take kindly to being virtualized...

Is just me or does the capturedusingversion= line in the package.ini not update itself after upgrading to a newer version of Thinapp? I have been upgrading older packages with the lastest revision of Thinapp and it the package.ini gives the appearance that it was built with the original version.

If I create a new package the capturedusingversion matches my current install level. Is there a way to verify which version a package was actually compiled on if the package.ini isn't getting updated correctly?

ThinApp doesn't support Window Shell Extension application well?

this is the first time i try ThinApp, i tried to capture the installation of TortoiseSVN1.6.6 ,here is what i did:

1. open ThinApp, did a pre installation scan

2. install TortoiseSVN,

3. did the Post installation scan

4. check all the exe files ThinApp find for me (some exe are not selected by default), set TortoiseSVN.exe as the main file conatining data)

5. build file(not msi format, not compressed)

then i uninstall the tortoisesvn, restart my computer , try to run the TortoiseSVN.exe ThinApp has built for me, but there's no tortoisesvn menu entries in the windows explorer context menu. Anything wrong in my steps?

I got and game from and friend but's packed in vmware thinapp you know what i mean i think all i have to do is click on the exe file and the whole games starts but since some days i'm getting punkbuster problem to fix that i need to get to the punkbuster folder and delete it and reinstall it but how can i do that if it's already packed?

So i would really apprciate if you guys/girls could tell me how to unpack vmware packed exe files it it's driving me crazy the pnkbstrB.exe error

ThinApp Client Only Apps

I have a couple ERP applications (Infor Visual Manufacturing and Sage Business Works), which only install a client side of the app and basically the shortcut target on a users desktop would point to \\server\share\app.exe. The problem I have when I try to execute this thinapp I get the following unrecoverable error: Unable to open \\server\share\app.exe

I'm not sure if apps like this can be thinapp'ed? I have had success with several other apps which do a full local install, but these two bring new challenges. Any help is appreciated as I'm brand new to the ThinApp world, but loving it so far!

VMware ThinApp 4.0.4, Windows 7 x64, and Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010

Just posting this as a Windows 7 compatibility FYI:

Using VMware ThinApp 4.0.4, I've created a couple of packages for Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010. One package includes the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and the other doesn't. Both packages were created on Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and run properly on this platform. However, both packages crash immediately when launched on Windows 7 x64.

Manage Add-ons within IE

My question is can managed add-ons within IE be Thinapped and streamed across the network.

Perfect example is Flash v10.

Just a little background. In my office we are using VMView with Linked Clones. The pools are configured to use persistent settings so the same user hits the same box when signing back into View. Well not everyone is using Flash and we want to run these Pools as lean as possible (pretty bad when you start targeting IE add-ons). But if the user goes to a site that needs it then it will pull that add-on across the network.

I just loaded ESX server and then I loaded a client to attach and download the sphere client and then I installed the vcenter on that client but I can't create the datacenter that I could the last time I did it I just don't have any options but inventory. I did this a few days ago and had no problems so any help would be great.

ThinApp 4.0.3 Folder Creation

Hi there.

Hope you can help and can explain what I am trying to do. I install and application that is hardcoded to initially create and read an .ini file located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

When I thinapp the application, it now l creates the APPFile.ini in location:

D:\Documents and Settings\%username\Application Data\Thinstall\APPCaptureFolder\%AppData%\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

(The D drive is a local drive that is used to store profile settings etc). Question is how can I create the folder D:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\ so can manually copy the file into it?

I have created the folder path before capturing the application but it does not create the folder. I have used there 'Merged' option when capturing the app.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Windows update breaks some ThinApp packages ?

Hi,

Today, my Adobe Reader 9.1.3 ThinApp package doesn't work anymore!
details:

ThinApp 4.0.3.3313
captured on Windows XP SP3 (32 bit) VM
was working yesterday!
some Windows update got installed yesterday ( I think they are one week older but I was in hollydays so the computer was turned off)
package still works on Windows XP SP3 (32 bit)
package doesn't work any more on Windows Vista x64 with a standard user account (but it still works with admin account!)
I get a "Runtime error" by the C Runtime Library
I tried to rebuild the package and I still get the same error
I tried to execute it on a previous Windows Vista x64 image where last update were not installed, and package works again!

So I'm pretty sure an update to the OS broke something, but I'll have to check each one to see which is culprit.

Can anybody confirm that ?
I hope upcoming 4.0.4 version will solve this!

4.0.4 and Win7 64-bit

Aware that 4.0.4 will not function properly with win7 completely but the option is there so I decided to try out Firefox 3.5.5. Created a couple packages, one on XP SP2 32-bit and another on Win 7 64-bit and the results have been the same when running the virtualized package on Win 7 64-bit.

When trying to attach a file to a message in gmail for example, when it opens the file dialog window, it crashes. Any pages with Flash content will also crash the browser. Plus it'll crash from time to time for no reason at all (haven'tdone any logging at this time).

I'm sure there are more issues but at least it's something we can experiment with until full support comes later next year.

Autodesk DWG Trueview 2010

I'm trying to ThinApp Autodesk DWG Trueview 2010.
Unfortunaly I have some problems with it and can't get it to work properly.

First of all I installed all the prereqs for this program:
Visual C++ 2008 SP1
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 + Family update
MS XML 6.0 CHECK
WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86
DirectX (available via the installation image Autodesk\DWGTrueViewx86InstallImage\support\DirectX)
nlsdl.x86 (Autodesk\DWGTrueViewx86InstallImage\support\NLSDL)
WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86

After that I make a setup capture of the DWG Viewer 2010.
When creating the project I get the following error:

The programs proceeds and the .exe is build correctly. When I launch the application I get the following error:
This version of DWG Trueview was not installed properly and some features may not run correctly. You should reinstall DWG Trueviewer immediately to make sure all featueres are working properly. Do you wish to continue anyway?

When I click yes to proceed anyway the application starts. Next time I start the application I didn't receive an error.

Someone knows how to capture this program properly?

Visma SPCS Adm. 200

I've packed Visma SPCS Administration 200 ver. 4.5.

It's seems that there is either a bug in ThinApp or in the software.

First of some buttonicons didn't show up in Visma when virtualized, but this was solved by ExternalDlls=comctl32.dll (the function ImageList_Render failed when virtual).
But now Im not able to create new projects. I get no errors but the app isnt able to create new apps.
The app (spcsadm.exe) does a loop and checks in in "c:\spcsfiler\" if a folder called FTG1 exists.
If it doesn't it throws up an "new project"-dialog and asks for verification of creatign the project c:\spcsfiler\FTG1.

If it on the other hand finds this directory, that is, if the project already exists it checks for FTG2 and then FTG3 and so on upp to FTG999.

Natively it works. But when i run it in thinapp it for some reason keeps incrementing its loop.
Since it doesn't play with many other runtime files (its most spcsadm.exe talking with kernel32.dll and ntdll) I dont have much to play with.
I've tried most possible flags in package.ini without result, even ExternalDlls=kernel32.dll wich obviously didn't work.

So either the developers at Visma reacts on an stupid exception from kernel32-api that they shouldn't or the VOS api for kernel32 don't answer the same way as the native.
Anyone? Any ideas greatly appricieated. Here are a small bit of log from what happens when the process looks for the foldername until it gives up and starts looking FTG2* instead. (*=begins immediatly after the last line here)

How does Thinreg work when installing MSI's?

We've had some strange occurences of start menu items disappearing and magically reappearing when uninstalling and installing our packaged MSI's. Today I got another strange error as it thinreg wanted to register another .exe file that was not a thinapp application.

So my question then... does ThinReg just try to register ALL .dat and .exe files it can find in the applications install path?

Hi,

I'm trying to thinapp autocad 2009 and thus far I've had no luck. The isolation mode is set to merged. Also, before i performed the second snapshot i made sure that the autodesk licensing service (AdskScSrv.exe) was stopped. The application build was performed on a completely clean Vmware workstation. When I try to launch the thinapped application on either the machine I did the snashop on, or on anormal machine i recieve the error message FATAL ERROR: Unhandled c0000096h Exception at 246149bh

Autocad 2009 in ThinApp

I'm trying to get Autocad Architecture 2009 sp3 to work trough Thinapp. I've done some wrestling with it but the program reacts the same. After the first start i get a fatal error window and the program quits after i click OK.

The next version of ThinApp, 4.0.4, will be released on Nov 9. As with every release, we've fixed a whole bunch of application compatibility issues. The SetupCapture UI has been updated slightly. The 4.0.4 release will not formally support Windows 7, meaning you can't file Support Requests for issues that only occur on Windows 7. However, we do believe that the majority of applications will run fine on Win7 when rebuilt using 4.0.4 (a new capture is not required, just a re-run of build.bat).

Can ThinApp execute apps remotely in the same way XenApp can?

New to ThinApp and trying to understand how we might use it to stream applications to desktops from our storage platform

In streaming execution mode does the applciation still execute on a local machine (i.e in memory). In that will the client still require all firewall rules to allow the application to see its back end database?

If we wanted to avoid this and execute the application remotely what would be the best way to do this without streaming the whole desktop (VDI?)

When creating a portable application a single executable is created. That's great, but how do you create the application to be able to run from a CD?
When I run the portable application folders are created in the same directory as the portable application. Obviously this is not possible when the CD media is read only.

My question...

Is it possible to force the creation of these folders in the user's temporary folder.
If so, how do you do this?

Embeding a ThinApp packaged application into a web page

I'm trying to find how (if at all) is it possible to embed a packaged application (for example the browser I've already packaged) into a web page?
Not sure that this is a good direction. What I'm trying to gain is an object/component that I can embed into web pages and will give me a sand boxed part the user can browse web pages without compromising his/hers machine.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 does not accept correct activation codes after virtualisation

i thinapped Adobe Photoshop CS2 on Win-XP SP2 for testing purposes.

i tried different scenarios:

real win xp machine, virtual xp machine, vmplayer, vmworkstation,

when i start the virtualised photoshop, i get always a message to reactivate it because the license files are invalid, (but my activation codes are correct)

i enter the activation code again, but photoshop does not accept it.

I tried to make a portable for Catia P3 V5R19. The package was made for both Thinstall and the USB options. The executable from the bin folder is not working for both options. I noticed that the executable icon on the desktop for the original installation has to provoke an environment like this:

AppSync using File share

Hi, I'm using firefox as ThinAppad application

I want to use the AppSync variable to make it updatable. Hereunder I explain what I did so far. I assumes further that just as long the application on the update server is different in date/time is enough to tricker the upload process

I'm using a fileahare on a server which is password protected. With user/password it is accessable.
In the manual is an option mentioned to give in the AppSyncURL the user and password to connect to a server using HTTPS/HTTP

When I use this option in firefox -> http://user:password@doamin.com it works while connecting to a webservice.
When I try this using the command-> file:///user:password@server/share it does NOT work

I don't know if ThinApp uses the straight URL as given at the AppSyncUrl variable but if it does this will not work.

A- If I just try this and use the variabe without usernae:password the application just starts, but nu update takes place and no messages appear.
B- If I put the user:password I do het a message that the application was unable to connect to the server.
C- I also tried manually making a fileshare and the starting the application as in option A, with the assumption that the user ia at that moment allready known, but no update takes place and no message appears

Questions:
Is my assumption correct that the file needs only be different on date/time?
Am I doing things wrong with user:password using file share?

Any help is welcome

Thinapp + local installed program

New to ThinApp but heres what I got so far:

We have a rather large program installed on numerous PC's that needs to be updated every week or so. Within this program, it sends parameters to a locally installed scanning program which in turns uses a locally installed scanner driver. I've got our large program thinapped to run off a network share, lauch the scanning program, and work fine; but when you try lauching the scanning utility for the 2nd time (never closing the thinapp) the locally installed scanning program errors citing it can't load the scanner driver. I did a merged isolation with sandbox on the local user PC. In the sandbox, thinapp brings files for both the scanning program and scanner driver in.

It seems that once thinapp brings the files into the sandbox and uses them once, they no longer work again unless I close the thinapp, delete the sandbox, and re-launch the thinapp. I truly believe thinapp is where we need go as far as application support but won't get it in the budget till this one works.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Those Thinapp'd applications where compilied using Thinstall version 3.3.

The root-problem seems to be that the "windows install service" could not be accessed during MSI-Install.
Seems to the a thinapp-specfic problem.

Can AWD View/ViewStation clients be encapsulated as ThinApp

We are having problems virtualizing AWD Imaging application (from DST).

1. As a standard install (not as a ThinApp), AWD creates what's "AWD Logon" as a shortcut on the desktop.

2. Once you launch AWD Logon shortcut and authenticate through it, this generates additional shortcuts, based on the user's security access level at the imaging system.

-New shortcuts will by default target for files that are supposed to be located in the C:\

The amounts of shortcuts differ from user to user. So, one user may get 3 shortcuts, while other user gets 10 shortcuts depending on what work, roles, have been assigned by the imaging security administration.

The problem we encounter when virtualizing this app, is that encapsulated executable works as expected, and accomplishes the ability to use the AWD Logon, but, the shortcuts generated by the AWD system, will have a target pointing to C:\, and not to a virtualized path. Because target path is not found, causes the shortcuts to fail.

Once again, these additional shortcuts can't be encapsulated as part of the ThinApp package, as these shortcuts are generated at the time the user logs on to application.

IE and Office integration

I have been able to integrate IE applications with Adobe and Microsoft Office using Applink. The problem I continue to have is removing the option to ask before downloading an Excel or Word doc. You can select to not ask before opening which will save while you are logged in but we are using View with non persistent desktops so the option doesn't stick. Let me know if you have any ideas.

64 Bit ThinApp apps on XP64?

We are beginning to set up our View (VDI) environment, and are trying to determine the best strategy for exercising ThinApp...

In the "physical" world, we are an XP64 shop since several of our CAD/Engineering apps require significant memory (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, etc...) only available on the 64 Bit OS. This requirement would spill over into our View implementation.

I spent a couple of days trying to ThinApp MATLAB (64 Bit) unsuccessfully before I took a closer look at the System Requirements for ThinApp:

ThinApp does not support the following operating systems and applications:

16-bit or non-x86 platforms such as Windows CE 64-bit applications running on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows operating systems 16-bit applications running on 64-bit Windows operating systems
My boss said that he has talked to VMWare reps who claim that 64 Bit apps CAN be configured to work on XP64 (with a little bit of work)...

Has anyone successfully deployed a 64 Bit app on XP64 using ThinApp?

Hosted Application streaming

We currently have a system that because of firewall port issues (i.e. it uses any port it can) has to run via a Citrix front end. Because of the way Citrix works with VM’s this means we have to use 5 separate Citrix servers and may now have to use more as customer wants to extend usage (its something like 50 users max per Citrix instance)

What I want to know is – can we use our NetApp storage platform to host the application and have ThinApp ‘stream’ that application to the
desktop over one protocol (i.e. RDP). Similar to hosted application streaming in XenApp we’d want to deliver the application to the SAN and connect each user
to a remote session running their application. The application on the SAN would then have to connect to the back end database server such that the only
connection between the desktop and the data centre was via RDP (or one protocol)

Can you let me know if this is possible, what sort of architecture we’d need, a quick idea of how it works at the back end and a rough idea of license costs

Network performance vs Local launch

Hi Folks,

We've Thinapp'd Office 2003 & Office 2007 for a client. After troubleshooting mdm.exe / debugger services causing issues on launch we've gotten the app to run in 3 seconds when launched from a physical windows XP PC or 8 seconds if launched from a Network File Server (Server 2003). We've tried 3 different file servers, both physical and virtual and can't seem to bring down the launch time when it's loaded over the network.

Task Manager shows a CPU hit in both cases for most of that launch time, Network activity is around 12% max.

Can anyone give me a benchmark launch time for streaming Thinapp'd Office 2003 or 2007 over a LAN (gigabit ethernet)? I'd like to see if we're getting a good result or we need to take things further with VMware?

I did a sbmerge on a project a couple o'days ago.
It needed a new odbc-source so I included odbcad32.. ill post the complete entrypoint here, its a nice tip

Anywho, the new ODBC-source (user) was then marked with isolationmode "sb_only" in hkcu.txt. When was this isolation mode introduced? (im using 4.0.3)
I thought that then this new odbc-info would only be read if it was located in the apps sandbox (for some reason) but no.
So whats the advantage with sb_only versus Full?

In my case the app had to be locked to a special odbc-source, pointing to a "test-database", therefore its critical that no physical-odbcsettings can be read since the production database looks the same/same credentials.

citrix program neighborhood agent fails due to hight cpu usage

Hiho,

i tried to package the citrix pna version 10.150 to 11.000 but failed to do so. When i start the thinapp'ed pnamain.exe it takes 50% of the cpu resources and stands still. I tried nearly everything with different version of hte pna and thinapp.

Today i tried to package the pn agent with xenocode which does nearly the same as thinapp. And to my surprise the package runs fine. It connects to our citrix server and i can start the given appz from the systray as it should be.

Has somebody else tried this and could give me a hint?

(And thx Jeroen for your earlier attemps to help me. As you can see i didn't manage it ...)

Hi,

I've been reading and learning into ThinApp in the last couple of weeks.

I'm trying to create a ThinApp package for a web browser (which I already did successfuly)

What I need next is to find a way to transfer a URL that this browser will surf to.

I looked into Log On Scripts but it seems I cannot change the link once it's in the script file.

I'm trying to create a sandboxed browser that I can feed links into.

The next stage would be to have a full-duplex communication between the sandboxed browser and the outside host, meaning that the host can point the packaged browser from the outside and the packaged browser can "report" the outside host that it's location has changed.

I'd be happy to get any pointers, reading materials and samples.

I have been testing the North Star beta and I have a question...

Is there anyway to change the sandbox to be used at runtime? (meaning, choosing before loading the thinstalled application)

I'm asking this because I want to use and application from a server on various remote computers and I want to be able to have various users accesing it and use their own sandbox (and preferences, etc), no matter on what computer they run it from. (for example, keep various sandbox on the server and load the chosen one each time, instead of it being machine-dependent on the %AppData% from each one)

Hello!

I have thinapped our ERM system with has two plugins. One is the Oracle Forms and Reports Client and the second a MS Office package.

The ERM system creates docs via OLE in combination with MS word. With a thin-apped Office 2003 there's no problem. So I have inserted the optional plugin in the package ini of the ERM thinapped system.

Next I've tried the same with MS Office 2007 as Thinapp-package. But the link between the ERM system and Office 2007 via Thinapp is broken; there's no chance to write docs.

Do you have any advices for OLE with Office 2007 as thinapp? I've already read that Thinapp doesn't support any OLE, but it still works with a thinapped Office 2003.

Updating a ThinApp application

I'm trying to find out if it's possible to apply patches to a ThinApp package. Having used SVS in the past, i'm used to being able to basically 'open' the layer, apply the patch and then close up again and distribute. Is there an easy way to do this with ThinApp without having to repackage the entire application? If so, can someone point me to steps or a whitepaper?

Unpacking Thin Applications back to project (ThinApp and Xenocode)

As I promised. I'm going to show you how to decompile the package back to project.
All actions in this tutorial are only for researching.

WARNING! You can do it all on your own risk (license etc.).

There is two ways. First (my own) has two modifocations.
The first thing that you should know - ThinApp is packed itself. Can't say about second method (on which another Thinuser gave the permission), but in first method you'll need UNPACKED ThinApp.
All works you should do on "clean" PC.

Unpacking ThinApp.

1. Install ThinApp.
2. Ckick "Next" till you get dialog window (DW) for saving the project.
3. In DW (important) change the location to "C:\Program Files\VMware\"
4. Right click on the folder "VMware ThinApp"
5. Copy
6. IN THE SAME DW go to some another path: "D:\Unpack\" (for example).
7. Right click in this folder.
8. Paste.
9. Close all windows.
10. Put all unpacked files from "D:\Unpack\" WITH REPLACE into "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp\" (installation folder).
11. In "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp\" you can delete "Setup Capture.exe" but leave the "setup_capture.exe".
12. Now you have absolutely portable unpacked ThinApp.

By the way, this unpacked TA runs on Win7, by the applications made with it still do not.

Meth1.Mod1. Suitable for ThinApp and Xenocode (using ThinApp).

1. Run precapture.
2. Do not install anything and close TA window (with standard close button) or kill it's process in task manager.
3. Run the application you want to unpack (Object).
4. Call any dialog window (DW) in this application (Save... etc.)
5. In DW's file name field put * and press enter to see ALL files and use this DW as explorer.
6. Go to TA installation path with this explorer.
7. Run "setup_capture.exe" and it will give you choice to continue capturing.

BUT! This postcapture will continue in virtual area, where Object IS ALREADY INSTALLED (AppLinked)

8. Continue postcapture (is all goes good you should see our Object entries after postcapture).
9. Save project.

Pay attention that the project would be saved beside of your Object executable.
As you see, this method depends very much on dialog windows.
Xenocode can't be run under DW of application packed by Xenocode.
So you can use ThinApp to unpack Xenocoded application and then import ThinApp project back to Xenocode.

Meth1.Mod2. Suitable for ThinApp.

1. Using unpacked TA make precapture.
2. Do not install anything and put some simple file manager (RollerNT) in Program Files.
3. Make postcapture.
4. With "RollerNT.exe" entry point.
5. (In "Package.ini") uncomment "OptionalAppLinks=Plugins\*.exe" and change it to "OptionalAppLinks=Plugins\*.*"

the package can have not only EXE extension

6. Build this project.
7. Create "Plugins" folder beside of "RollerNT.exe" that you've build.
8. Put the application you want to unpack (Object) in "Plugins".
9. Run precapture.
10. Do not install anything and close TA window (with standard close button) or kill it's process in task manager.
11. Run VIRTUALISED "RollerNT.exe".
12. Go to TA installation path with this explorer.
13. Run "setup_capture.exe" and it will give you choice to continue capturing.

BUT! This postcapture will continue in virtual area, where Object IS ALREADY INSTALLED (AppLinked)

14. Continue postcapture (is all goes good you should see our Object entries after postcapture).
15. Save project.

Pay attention that the project would be saved in "Captures\RollerNT\bin\Captures\%Object%".

Now this %Object% folder should be moved in "Captures".
And now you can see all the files and registry of the project, but isolation settings now were setup by YOUR version of ThinApp.

Virtualizing an app with set configurations

When I virtualize a certain application with thinapp it creates problems because when I install the app I have to enter set configurations. These configurations are network settings that help identify the system on the network so this creates a problem with potability. Is there any way to virtualize with THinapp without having to run the install file and configure the application or any other ideas that could help would be appreciated.

I Virtualized an application that is used for communication and VOIP. I am able to have the system show it is connecting to the network but I am unable to push out templates to the other systems in the network that are up and running. The problem is when I Virtualized it I have to run the install and it has for specific configuration that is uses to communicate with. I think this is the reason why it is not working I try to go into the registry to change things like system name but it still does not work. Is there a way to edit system settings after it is Virtualized for an application so it does not have all the same settings as the initial package.

1. What is the best way to deploy the thinapped package to a laptop user? (I think deploying the full executable to the laptop and then thinreg the executable locally with a logonscript)

2. What is the best way to setup the sandbox in a big envoriment?

3. How is the link made that Outlook (locally installed) can open attachement with e.g. adobe reader (thinapped)

4. What is the percentage of applications that can be thinapped in a enterprise enviroment?

5.Does somebody knows where to find best practices for thinapp in an enterprise enviroment?

6. Is the license packaged in the thinapp executable? What happens when the license expires? Every package has to be thinapped again? Or is it possible to use an enterprise license which is valid till 2050 or something?

I'd like to make my app to be thinapped so it can be portable.
my app deploy some license of its own.
what I need to know is :
if I copy the portable thinapped (only the exe files, the cmd.exe, and maybe the regedit.exe, but the definitely not package before built), and then register it on their computer,
is there anyway for the user to merge this thinapped app with the registry (or registry.rw.tvr, or anything) in their computer ? cause this would raise a big issue for me..

I have tried to search this for awhile, and it seems that to merge the thinapped app with the new files/registry/the used thinapped app/anything in the new computer, I would need to use sbmerge.exe and that means that I have to have the package before built. But just in case, I think I should ask here in forum where expert users of thinapp (or maybe even the programmer of thinapp) reside...

External Client Access to ThinApp Program

I'm new to the whole ThinApp/VMWare environment, so sorry if this is a little vague or has been covered already someplace else. I can get any answers you may need or am fine with simply being pointed to the appropriate information. We currently have several applications that we have setup with Citrix that clients are able to access from an external internet connection. We use a Citrix Access Gateway appliance that the clients log into via a web portal and displays the applications they have access to. They can then launch whatever application they need to run. I'd like to move away from Citrix and to a ThinApp solution, but I'm not sure if there is a product out there similar to the Citrix Access Gateway that would allow secured access from external internet clients into our network (DMZ) for access to the applications. What products are out there that we could use? Is there something built into VMWare or would we need a third party software product/device to accomplish this? Thanks in advance!

Non functional Internet Explorer 8 capture

Hi,

I've attempted several times now to create a working capture for IE8 and each attempt has resulted in no success. Most recently I updated everything and captured it which worked for some users and not at all for others. As of recently even those users that were previously able to run it have started to see failures.

Background on this is that I can't run it at all, when I attempt to launch it using my account either it wont launch at all or it does launch and never connects to the internet, it will cycle for awhile and then say that it has recovered a tab and then eventually it will say something like it can't find a connection to the internet. For the users that were able to use it they could open tabs but no new windows and as of late they are experiencing the same results as me.

My capture system is Windows XP SP3 with all available updates, thinapp 4.0.-3313, the capture is run as the local administrator account and the installation works just fine, my end systems are all clones of the same Windows build.

I've seen several posts regarding people not able to open new windows from IE8 and stating that using the latest thinapp release fixed that however this hasn't changed my results. Looking for any advice on what may be happening in the capture. Other people have reported that they are successful in capturing this so obviously there is some way of creating the app successfully.

Functioning of the executable files from Thinapp for different applications

Why is that by some applications the executable from the bin folder work while by some other applications, the executable from the %ProgramFilesDir% folder? Has someone experienced this?

Any news about this, not as important for the moment but alot of my customer is in test of W7 now but can't run there Thinapps..

VIrtualized App is not portable to other systems and only works on the system it was captured

I Virtualized a GOV communication program and it would work on the system I captured it on but when I moved the program to another system with the same build it would not work. I then moved it to bare metal and it still would not work. I have captured all the trace logs from both systems and they are all identical and used windif to scan the files and all files are identical according to windif. I was hoping to get any other ideas of what could be wrong it seems like it is a dependecy fro some reason it works on the system it is Virtualized on but not when I move it.

but I have a need to add new files into the portable app with ease (as it have to be done by the user that only have little knowledge about IT/computer).
is there anyway to do this without re-build the portable app and do it with ease ??

ps : I know how to update the existing files with ease, but I need to add new files with ease (like just copy the new files to some folders), and not using the built-in cmd (because it would be too much to teach the users to use cmd)

Computer name issues with packaged app

When I package a communication gov app on my system it works fine until I move the package to another system. When that package get's moved to a system with a different computer name it no longer works unless I change the name of the computer to the same name as the system I created the app on. Is there anything I can do regarding computer names or virtual computer names to fix this problem so the app can be portable?

Is there any way of adding an HKLM key during MSI installation ? I need this to track machines on which the virtual app is installed for audit reasons.

The only way I currently see is to open the msi using a tool like wise and to add the key manually. Is there any other way of accomplishing this ?

Using AppData on a network drive

I am having difficulty configuring ThinApp packages that may be an inherent restirction or may be because I am missing something.

For some of my users, AppData is directed via User Shell Folders to a network drive (\\MyServer\MyShare\%USERNAME%\AppData).My problem is that the existing AppData data in the package appears to be ignored and only data on the network drive (if any) is used and updated. Nothing in AppData gets written to the sandbox.

The ##Attributes file in %AppData% in the package specifies an isolation mode of WriteCopy. I do not specify SandBoxNetworkDrives in the package.ini file.

Should I specify SandBoxNetworkDrives=1 in this situation? If so, how can I specify that some network folders should not be sandboxed?

It would probably be possible to avoid the problem by using a roaming profile with AppData inside it, but this involves performance and reliability risks in our case that I would rather avoid.

ThinApp capture errors

We're in the process of testing out ThinApp as a potential solutions, but i'm running into a few issues. I've used SVS (Symantec/Altiris) for virtualization before, but am new to ThinApp.

First, when it does the pre-scan, I always get a warning like this:
"RegQueryInfoKey failed for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\009"

I can continue through it...but i'd like to know why I get that warning. There are no permission restrictions on that key, and i'm logged in as a domain administrator to a clean box.

Second, after my first 2 attempts at capturing an application I get an error message:
"Unable to write to C:\Program Files (x86)\VMWare\VMWare ThinApp\Captures..................<very, very, very long path here>.........##Attributes.ini"

So, the whole thing fails. Is this due to the path being extremely long? Is there a limitation to file name paths? It is a Microsoft application, so no shocker that referencing a local cache for VMWare and the Microsoft directory on top would get extremely long...but that seems like a very bad limitation.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

OpenOffice Spell Checking

Hello, i've tried to virtualize OpenOffice. It works fine, but the spell checker doesn't work in virtualization.

Also i've found http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2009/03/how-to-create-a-thinapp-package-of-open-office-or-star-office.html but this doesn't help me. I saw also the comment of a user with the same problem, but no solution.

The Versions i've used is OpenOffice 3.1.1 (German) and ThinApp 4.0.3 (3313).

By the way, if i start the installed OpenOffice on the machine where the ThinApp is installed, the spellchecker is working.

Is this a Problem of ThinApp, or did someone have a solution?

We use AppSync to download new updates from our file share... for all apps this is done by

AppSyncURL = file://pd1/AppSync$/app-name.exe

And it works fine... however... If I name the thinapp "App Name.exe" it won't download...

I've tried adding file://pd1/AppSync$/App%20Name.exe but still no go...

The fileshare is on a Windows 2008 server. Any ideas? It's not a big issue, but it's a bit bothersome to remember to rename all packages (they get built and copied via scripts)... and of course it's more "human readable" with spaces...

ThiaApp is not portable

created thinapp for .net2.0 resulting in single exe file named DW20.exe.

created thinapp for application on host with .net2.0 installed(app will not install without .net2.0)

edited package.ini to include: RequiredAppLinks=DW20.exe

executed build for the application.

the thinapp exe executes fine on the host OSon which it was built, but when moved to another file share the following is displayed.

Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application.

If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

This question is for the Vmware folks - Is Vmware changing the name to ThinAPP Enterprise? If so, can you throw some light why? It's no secret that 4.0.4 is available everywhere on the Internet now. Can you guys, at least now, indicate when we can expect an official release? It is so ironic that you can download the new version from everywhere expect your site.

IE 6, Can't enter text in fields when running when IE7 or IE8 is installed

When I created an IE6 bubble and try to run it on my computer that has IE7 or IE8 installed IE 6 starts but I can't enter any text in a text field, ie: google search. I have jvm 1.5 virtualized as a plugin. It does seem to work on some computers with 7 or 8. Thanks for any help.

I am new to ThinApp and I have Virtualized commercial software without any problems but now I am trying to Virtualize a GOTS application that uses three services in windows that are specific to the app and do not show up under services once I virtualize the application and install it on the new VM. I am not sure if this is something that needs to be edited in the package INI file. I don't know much about virtualizing apps that have their own services so any ideas will be appreciated.

We use MS SCCM to deploy all our thinapped applications via their MSI files. This works just fine... apps are installed silently in the background (to shared folder C:\ThinApps) and are available for all users.

All users are regular domain users, i.e. they don't have any administrative or power user rights.

Our problem occours when we deploy an update. This is done by putting the update thinapps on a file share, and having the corresponding AppSyncURL in the packages.

Upon launch it creates the .ASL file (which I presume is the file to see when it last checked for an update) and begins to download an .ASE (which I guess is the new .EXE).

However, since they are regular users ThinApp seems to not be able to replace the original .EXE and we are left with a duplicate .1 file. Which means redundant data storage...

Any way to fix this?

Another issue... if an administrator happens to start an app on these machines the admin created .ASE is unavailable to users, meaning they'll never check for updates(?). Additionally, when run as an admin the files won't be renamed to either .EXE or .1, just leaving the .ASE there.

Any fix to this apart from manually resetting file security information and making any user able to delete any application?

But what about running on Win7 this version application with AppLink plugin, which was made with an older version?

I have captured Ansys-12 with Thinapp-4.0.3-3313 on Windows-XP-SP3, when I start Workbench it work normally, but when I close it, one of the services (SolverManager.exe) continues running, therefore I can not start the application again(I don't get any error), and i must kill it first by the task manager then I can start it again. I have asked support by Ansys, but they said that the service is needed for other part of the application and it must be running after closing the application. They said that they do not support virtualization of application

I have captured Timetell 6.3 with Thinapp-4.0.1-2866 on Windows-XP SP2, it works fine , Now when I start the application on Windows-XP-SP3 en then close it. Then i get error (f:\sp\vctools\vc7libs\ship\atlmfx\src\mfc\winctrl2.cpp:1311)
An invalid argument was encountered, i cannot fine exactly what the problem is, does have anybody solution for this problem

I'm trying to thinapp Open Office and Java.

First I thinapped Java on a clean machine, then went back to my clean machine and installed java locally. After that I thinapped OpenOffice and in the package.ini I added RequiredAppLinks=\\server\share\Java\bin\javaw.exe

But when I go the client it still asks for java but OpenOffice starts normally. Maybe this is an hard practice for me because I'm new to thinapp and I'm trying to learn it right now.
Does somebody know an easier practive with a program and java? The best practice, I guess, is that when the program misses the java client it doesnt launch at all.
Because then I can test if the programms are linked succesfully or not because now OpenOffice starts normally but I dont know how to test the Java possibilities in OpenOffice...
Hopefully somebody can give me a suggestion for a program!

Dear guys,

i'm new with ThinApp and i'm just playing with the product.

I have built a package for Office 2007 and i have set the sandbox locally on my pc.

My questoin is : i have in the "BIN" folder all office executables (excel.exe, word.exe etc) and i have an MSI installer.

Nevertheless executing only the executables all applications are working but without using the MSI.

At this point my question is : what does the MSI installer stand for ?

Any help is appreciated, many thx guys!

IE6 package does not work if IE8 is installed.

I built a IE6 package by upgrading from IE5 to IE6 on a windows 2000sp4 vm.

I customized and built the package. When testing the package on windows xp, it works fine if IE5,6,or7 is installed. If IE8 is installed the package will launch, but I am unable to type into any text fields.

ThinAPP vs InstallFree

Has anyone tried InstallFree? We are a ThinAPP shop for now, but it is becoming a pain in neck to work with Vmware's incompetent customer support and their non-disclosure policies. Anyway, we had a demo of InstallFree and it definitely has some cool features that ThinAPP is lacking - complete shell integration, easy process to upgrade packages (ThinAPP has one too but it never worked for us), no clean machine required to capture your packages and light-weight application provisioning tool that integrates very well with AD. They said they are releasing 64-bit support in January and I think it will be a serious competitor for ThinAPP. We will give it a serious consideration to make a switch when they have the 64-bit support.

If anyone of you have used InstallFree, can you share your experiences?
