What backup solutions/products are people using?

Hello.

My company has been trying out VMWare, and the main question that we are asking ourselves is how best to implement a backup solution.

I would appreciate any feedback on what backup strategies are being used out there.

We have a dozen or so OS instances in ESXi 3.5 running on an IBM 3550.

Thanks!

Problem on creating the storage
Hi all,

When I tried to add storage, it showed 2.18TB capacity. But it gave me just 183.12 GB maximize capacity.

Why and how to fix it?

Thanks
Anyone going 10G with VMware outside of a Nexus platform...?
Hello All,

I am curious if anyone has any comments around designing or implementing a full 10G (ESX & SAN) or Hybrid (10G servers & multiple 1G SAN) on something other than Cisco Nexus. My experiences so far with 10G implementations on Nexus has been fantastic, but not everyone is a Cisco shop. When I saw the writting on the wall for the 10G tipping point in pricing in late 2008/ealry 2009 I didn't think Cisco would be as competative as it has been on pricing. I think that pricing has kept many people designing around it, because outside of some lower 48 projects I just haven't heard of anyone implementing much on anything else. I like to hear about other options considering how important the network is for a VM project.

Cheers,

Kurt
What would you like to hear about at our first VMUG?
Greetings!

So, we've got a couple things on the agenda, like a vSphere overview and a VMworld 2009 recap. I also have a presentation to give on how were using VMware at our organization, which got me to thinking, what are you interested in hearing about? For those planning on attending, are you a virtualization expert or just getting started? Would things like design and planning, operational advice, and performance tips be of interest? Let me know the topics that you're interested in, and I look forward to seeing you there!
Next meeting?

Hi, I work in a small office of approx. 80 employees and we're in the early stages of a vmware deployment.

We have most of the pieces (SAN, ESX 3.5 hosts, Infrastructure 3) in place and are getting ready to start
converting some of our 20+ production servers.

Anyway, I just thought I'd say "Hi" and was wondering when/where the next meeting will be?

I look forward to more future involvement with this vmug.

Cheers
Top 10 reporting/optimizing issues????
Folks:

This next VMUG we'll have some 3rd party vendors in to show you some tools on reporting and optimization. Please help us focus this presentation but giving us some of your top issues that you wish you could easily report or tune in your VMware environment. Think of this as your "Wish List"

We'll look at the top items and ask these vendors to focus their presentation on how they handle tuning or reporting on the issue you suggest. Please through out a couple item that you'd really like to see handled in an efficient manner.
Vsphere 4.0 upgrade
Hello Everyone.

I have been working on my 4.0 upgrade and thought I would see how everyone else is doing and if there are any tips and tricks you all want to share.

The approach I am taking is a simple one. I am using VMotion to move my vms to a 3.5 host and then rebuilding the host I moved from to 4.0. I get a fresh clean install that way. I then power off the vms I moved, migrate them back to the host I rebuilt, upgrade the virtual hardware and power on and upgrade tools. Not a long process but painful in the sense that you have to coordinate the downtime for the virtual servers.

One thing to note that I was just informed about is to upgrade tools first than do the virtual hardware and you should not lose your previous IP settings. Dennis Baldwin from St Lukes read the upgrade docs better then me, OK, I did not read them. I have not tried this yet but will today.

If you have time please share with the group you experience with upgrading your environment.

Thanks

Rod
Would like to review the software iSCSI initiator to iSCSI target LUN mapping. I have been testing with OpenFiler and OpenSolaris ZFS strorage arrays. "LUN Thrashing" is a IO killer and can easily happen if the targets are not statically mapped on the ESX hosts.

Converting OEM to VM
Has anyone successfully covnverted an OEM Windwos 2003 server to a VM? Most of the documentation seems to focus on the licensing. We have an open license ready once the machine is converted, however the conversion with either VizionCore's product or VConverter fails around 99%.

I spoke to Dell and they said that an OEM server cannot be converted because "it" knows it's an OEM license and will fail.

Has anyone successfully done this? Any experiences?

I would have thought that there would be a good number of old OEM's out there needing to be converted about now, but I guess not based on the information out there.

Thanks in advance.

Snapshot control w/multiple vmdk's mounted to one VM.
Scenario.

VM Machine with multiple vmdk's. 1 for OS, 1 for Applications/programs, 1 for Data.

The OS and Application vmdk are on iSCSI SAN (seperate mount points) , the Data is an IP Nas. I split the iSCSI SAN to keep all OS VMDKS on one volume, and Application/programs on another.

Problem.

When taking a Snapshot, ALL vmdk's mounted to the VM are snapshot to the Machine OS volume on the SAN. (Snapshots stored with machine)

Question.

How can I change the behavior of the Snapshots to store them with their "Parent" volumes?

Arizona VAC List
Howdy fellow PHX VMUG members. I'd like to compile an updated list of VMware's CERTIFIED partners in Arizona. There are several different kinds of partners, as explained here: http://vmware.com/partners/programs/. I'm interested for my own reasons, but I'd to have an up-to-date list of local resources we can use as a reference in case we're interested in purchasing products or services. If you know if a certified partner, please direct them to join this Community and tell us about themselves. Likewise, if you represent a certified partner, please post your:

1) Name
2) Type of partner (VIP, VAC, TAP, etc.)
3) # of VMware Certified Professionals on staff
4) Products/Services offered
5) POC Information (name, title, phone #, e-mail)
6) Web URL
7) Anything else you feel may be of interest to this User Group

Thanks so much,

Dear VMUG Leaders:

EMC is very interested in sponsoring an upcoming VMUG and I wanted to see if you had a need or availability for a sponsorship and speaker. EMC and VMware made some exciting announcement around vSphere and other solutions for the private cloud and the virtualized data center and we are currently talking to may customers and VMUGs about the recent VMworld announcements. Below is an abstract we just delivered in Seattle at the VMUG and we can also cover topics such as DeDupe for Vmware and cover some new solutions with the addition of Data Domain.

Please let me know if you would be interested in having EMC host and sponsor an upcoming event. Best Regards,

*_EMC ABSTRACT_</strongEMC will be giving a technical overview of vStorage Infrastructure Services in vSphere and their impact on the datacenter, including VAAI (vStorage APIs for Array Integration). In addition, we will discuss how VMware technologies are redefining the relationship between storage and system administration. Lastly EMC will cover any new EMC solutions announced at VMworld that customers can leverage for their VMware environments.</p>
VMserver2 linux nubie.........
Hi all!

I just thought I would shoot this out to the crowd and see what may be a simple config issue or an undocumented feature{bug} I do allot of work with IBM's Maximo asset management software so I have a small windows 2003 VMserver at the office that I work on instances for projects and demos. The VMs are all self contained Win2003 server instances with J2EE Websphere server installed and an oracle or MSsql server database {proof of concept machines.......nothing more} All work fine on the Windows host server. The issue happens when I have to take these out into the field for demo's or training. I have been given the dreaded Vista laptop....32bit 4g memory. The VM's tank from lack of resorces becouse of vista's memory appitite. I resolved this by buying an external eSATA drive and loading ubuntu 9 64bit linux OS on it and loaded VMServer2 on it.. ubuntu sees all the 4g of memory and all the copied VM's seem to work fine. My problem is that the nic will only work in NAT and Bridged is not working at all. is this normal?........its just messing up my websphere installs with the NAT addresses.

any clues?
12/10/2009 Phoenix VMUG Meeting - Introducing Super Sessions and P2P!
Our next event will be 12/10/2009 from 8AM till 4PM at the Desert Willow Conference Center.

We'll be trying out 2 new session types and we are working hard to solidify them.

Super Sessions -

A "Super Session" will be a 3 hour vendor led session that will include a lab manual.

We currently working with 2 vendors to define / create these sessions. Going forward we might have more "Super Sessions" available but it really depends on user responce.

The goal of the super session is to give you some exposure to a VMware product, what you might encounter when you implement this product, and some exposure how the vendors product work with this solution.

It will be a Start to Finish session. Example would be the VMware product view. A vendor would produce a 3 hour session that would take you though all the decisions you might make to deploy view in your environment. This 'could" be hands on, it should be ever interactive and educational.

P2P Session -

Peer To Peer Session - During the day at our next event we'll be having 3 one hour sessions that will be presented by users for users, hence the name Peer To Peer (P2P)

Example - How I use VMware Server, or Fusion, or Things I learned about ESXi, etc..

If your interested in Presenting please contact us at events@vmugphoenix.com

Please let us know if you have suggetions or feedback..

Thanks..
ESXi intermittent ethernet connectivity
I have set up a new ESXi server with some new linux VM's on a home network. It is a pretty basic configuration but I am having some confusing trouble.

The basics:

My internet connection is accessible at 192.168.0.1. This machine is plugged into vmnic1 on the ESXi host.

Vmnic0 is on the lan side and is network 10.10.0.X

The ESXi console is at address 10.10.0.1.

I have a VM set up to be a router/firewall and is at address 10.10.0.2. This VM has both nics assigned to it.

I have a VM that is going to be a samba server connected to Vmnic0 (LAN).

The problem:

The samba vm is having weird trouble. It is address 10.10.0.4. I can
ssh into it from my PC. I can ping it from my PC and it can ping my
PC. It cannot ping the router (10.10.0.2) or any domain. It can ping
the ESXi host at address 10.10.0.1. The weird part is that it was
working (could ping the router and domains outside my LAN). It stopped
working when I rebooted the VM. I did not change anything inside the
VM network related.

I can connect from my PC (10.10.0.100) to everywhere. I have internet access. I can ping any address. All works fine. This is a PC at my desk plugged into a switch that is also plugged into the ESXi machine at Vmnic0.

The firewall VM can obviously talk to anywhere, can ping anywhere and seems to all work fine especially because my PC is getting routed through it okay.

Why can't the samba VM 10.10.0.4 talk to the router VM 10.10.0.2 ???

-Dan
Update on the November 2009 All Day Portland VMWare User Conference

Hi All,

If you haven't registered for the all day Portland VMWare User Conference on November 3rd, the planning team highly encourages you to sign up. Not only does it help us plan for food and other logistics, but we're fast approaching the limit of attendees that we can host in the facility. We're positive that this conference will be well worth your time, especially if you were unable to attend VMWorld. We'll have four keynote sessions as well as four different breakout sessions with speakers from VMWare, our sponsors, and VMWare customers. They will present the latest technologies related to VMWare, walk through best practices, and provide interesting and unique looks at the different technologies you can use in your virtual environments.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided along with a whole bunch of giveaways for the attendees, including 10 copies of Scott Lowe's new book, "Mastering VMWare vSphere4" generously donated by Sybex Publishing.

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Since several people had a hard time finding building 38 on the Tektronix campus last year, please use this link to help you find your way to the VMWare User Conference on November 3rd. As you can see, Building 38 is within easy walking distance of the MAX line for those of you wanting to avoid traffic.

We'd like to have a VM World Recap at our next meeting on November 12th. Is there anyone who has attended who would like to participate in a panel interview style Q&A regarding what was presented there? I'm looking for three or four individuals who would be able to give a brief recap of their experience and perhaps take a few questions. Please post in this thread if you're interested or email me directly at llemming@edcoe.org. Thanks!
12/10/2009 Phoenix VMUG - P2P Presentors needed
We are looking for 3 user (non-vendors) presenters for our next 12/10/2009 meeting.

Here are some of the ideas for this..

Session time would be about 45 Minutes

You presentation doesn't have to take up the full 45 minutes and we'll fill in the rest with other users or presentations

We'd like for you to present on topics you are familiar with..

Examples would be VMware Server, vCenter Server, ESXi, Fusion, or maybe a program that your good with that related to VMware, etc..

You don't have to be an expert in this area just willing to put together a quick PowerPoint and let us know what you think

You can even bring in equipment if you want

Make it fun

Usually I don't present as I don't want to take time away from users, however this time coming up I plan to co-present my findings on a recent vCenter Server migration and/or VMWare Server.

If you'd like to present then we'd love to have you..

Please email us at events@vmugphoenix.com or if you have question feel free to email me directly - matt.mancini@vmugphoenix.com

Thanks!

Hello - My name is Don LaMure and I have recently started my own consulting company and have been selling professional services for many years. Essentially all of my past clients are using VMware. As I would like to offer them consulting in these areas, I feel a VMUG meeting could be very beneficial. I'm currently the co-founder of the Silicon Valley SharePoint User Group and now have over 100 members on our LinkedIn Group and normally 50+ attendees to our once a month meetings.

If anyone is interested in working with me on getting this started, please call me at 408-393-6205 or email chessconsult@yahoo.com

Thank you in advance.

I attended this show last year, and really came away with a lot of good info. The cost is free, so if you can take a day away from the office, I highly recommend it. There are quite a few tracks to attend. You won't have any problems filling your day with sessions. They'll post more info about the sessions as the date comes closer, you can look at the other cities to get a decent idea of what to expect.
If so have you have any luck in doing so, or I'm I trying to use a product that will not work. Thank you in advance
Hello All!

Some of the presentations from our last 08/20/2009 meeting have been posted in our documents section.

We couldn't directly post up all the presentations as some of the vendors needed to modify them slightly.

Once we have the modified versions we will post them up directly.

Thanks..

At the last VMUG meeting, there was a question if anyone had performed an in-place upgrade from Virtual Center 2.5 to vCenter 4 and no one had. Well, I just finished mine and it went very well.

We are currently using a physical box for this and the DB is in the same server. I ran a P2V to act as a quick recovery if I needed to. Ran the process as per the upgrade document and am fully functional now with my mix of 3.5i 3.5 full and 4.0 ESX servers. No license server issues or anything.
How would you set up Outlook (w/ VMware?) on a MacBook Pro so it would do *mailmerge with Salesforce*?

Can that be done smoothly?

I don't have VMware or Outlook yet but I assume I may need VMware to run Outlook at this time? I'm running OS 10.5.8.

I use Firefox, and Safari (for different things), as well as gmail and MAIL. SalesForce seems adamant about using Outlook.
Storage VMotion being retired at the end of the year?
In the Gotcha session, someone advised that Storage VMotion will be retired at the end of the year for vSphere unless a certain level of licensing is purchased (or something along that lines). Can someone elaborate on this and possibly forward or post any links that wound confirm this or explain it further?
Great first meeting
Thanks to Bolthouse, Bear and SJ Bank for their efforts in putting together this first meeting. From the attendance it appears there is plently of interest in VMware and sharing first hand experiences. It was worth it for me to travel from San Luis Obispo to attend.

Suggested future topics: 1. P2V conversion methods (VM Converter, Acronis Universal Restore) and preparation techniques (H/W specific software like Dell Openmanage, Anti-Virus issues, OS licensing).

2. ESX cluster designs (ESX/ESXi for first time implementers) with VMware licensing costs and ROI calcs.

Thanks also to VMware for helping organize the first meeting! Well done.

Using and setting up NPIV
Hi all.

I had a question come my way in regards to setting up N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) within an ESX farm. I have not set this up myself so am hoping that those of you who may have had experieince with it would be willing to share the knowledge and help a brother out in setting it up. The question is below. There are a few docs out there with a lot of greek in them so please answer if you have done this before.

"We are interested in NPIV but I'm not sure how to set it up. It looks like the Fiber switch needs to send something to the ESX servers but I'm not sure how to configure it. We have Cisco 9509 fiber switches and HP DL585 servers. I would like to hook up with someone that is using NPIV to help us set it up in our environment."

Thanks!
We are running Dell servers, Dell's new version of Open Manage software is not doing for us. Anyone using anything different to manage the physical hardware of your ESX servers, SAN, switches etc? We are moving our servers offsite at some point in the next couple of months and I'd hate to have a memory dimm or hard drive go bad and not know about it until it is too late. Free is good but we aren't opposed to paying for something if it works.

I am interested in attending the Bakersfield Area VMUG meeting on 8/19/09 and have a few questions:

Is there a fee to attend and if so, is lunch included in the price of admission?

What is the dress code? Since the meeting is held at The Petroleum Club is formal attire required, or is casual attire acceptable?

Are people with limited experience with VMware welcome to attend?

Am I allowed to bring guests, or should they register for themselves?

I am looking forward to this meeting. Thanks in advance for any and all information anyone can provide about the meeting.
