please display the full post while typing an answer - it is a pain to always be forced to open the original post in a second browser tab just to see the full context.
This is the only forum that only displays one post while answering
When you're done . . .

There are often times that a user is stuck with a setup or configuration issue and a simple diagram would be a huge help in getting the idea across. It would be really nice to have something like http://www.gliffy.com/ or perhaps better http://www.onlinesketchpad.com to actually create and embed a simple drawing. Again no hurry. When you're done the other stuff.

<strike>First of all, it's a complete mess in Firefox.</strike>

I can not even browse selected forums list without scrolling the screen. When I tried to post this new discussion I had to scroll through ALL the possible forums. Hey, did you hire 7-year old web developer?

What the hell did you do to forum?!
discussions listing does not update itself

2 hours ago I posted to a thread in vmplayer-section - the new post directly updated the listing in "my discussions"
But so far it does not appear in the discussion listing of vmpl;ayer-section.
This also happens on other sections ....

Its very irritating that you can not view your own answer - only if calling it from "my discussions it can be displayed.

A browser refresh does NOT help

On a regular bases, the content for the specific thread doesn't appear to load.
Firefox 3.5.5 on Windows XP SP3

See screen shot.
After forcing the page to reload one or multiple times, the content finally shows up.
Am I the only one here with this problem... or is someone else seeing the same thing?

thanks,
Before the forum update you were able to access the vSphere community and see all the child community discussions. Now this is no longer possible and can only see the first page or the child topics individually.

Also, it seems that it gets slower to navigate and render pages with every update. This latest one is horribly slow.

There are many 3rd party db vendors that do an admirable job with management, navigation and usefulness of a db. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to investigate obtaining a for-purpose product rather then reinventing the wheel at every update.

how shall a new user find the Converter-forum ???

I usually had this in "my communities" - and today I only found it again because it was listed in my recent posts.

Why should a new user search for this under the vCenter section ?

in IE 6 "all communities" dropdown is not clickable

in IE 6 that comes with a fresh 2003 setup the "all communities" dropdown does not work.
It drops down right but when you then move the mouse down to click any link the dropdown disappears.

So the forum is unusable - I used firefox to post this - no way to do it with IE 6 right now.
I'm lucky that I found the Communities Feedback forums at least after I found where to post soemthing. Well hidden !

1. Why does the VMTN looks like that (see attached screenshot), now ?
2. Why are the Top Memeber counts reset?
3. Why have you changed something (at least) I got used to and where (at least) I could work fast end efficient with ?
4. (At least) I Can't see which answer was tagged as helpful or correct anymore.

From trying around in that new forum I find that not easy to use.

Forum software is stupid, waht you type is NOT what you get

I frequented this forum in the 1.x days as I worked out the kinks and made multitudes of feature requests. I pretty much stopped using it after realizing that VMware doesn't care once they have your money and really could care less about improving support for anything other than a Windows guest used in the way they imagine a 'simple' Mc useer to do so.

Now that 3.0 is out and riddled with bugs, I came here to see if anyone else had issues and it appears they certainly did. So, i post some replies that are mostly a "me too" of sorts and keep my eyes open. As threads were responded to, I noticed something very odd. The pots I made don't look the same as when I typed them. Evey time I hit return to separate paragraphs, it sows one blank line between them. When I view my posts later, sometimes there is one line bewtween, but sometimes there is none and sometimes there are two! Its not even consistent within a single post!

This post has a few paragraphs in hopes of showing iit off separate from any Fusion related content. VMware seems on a mission to bust everything the touch lately, even the forum software. Seriously, how hard can it be to NOT mangle some simple text?

Bonus fun, I've noticed that the spacing between lines within each paragraph is not consistent. Sometimes its tight, sometimes really loose. Also varies between paragraphs within a single post. Incompetence abound!

Hello VMware communties team. First off, I wanted to say congrats on the sucessful launch of the new layout. It will take some getting used to but I think it looks nice.

I have a question. I can no longer see a VMware icon displayed beside users who are VMware employees when they post in threads. Is this something that has been changed or simply an error? The icon appears when you are looking at a community and a VMware employee has started a thread.

Cheers
posting code-samples is a pain - especially the # which is often used in vmware-config-files renders badly.
I'm sure everyone supporting the forums tend to be frustrated when users keep posting repeated questions that are easy to get through "Google" or VMTN search features. Can you recommend to place a text box on top of every VMTN forums so encourage them to do a quick search on "Google/VMTN" first before posting questions? Its a big wasted of forum resources and repetitive supports that I've found 60% of the questions can be answer via search. Or place a warning during user registration process, recommend to maximize search options before postings!!!

We would like to see more technical related questions that are informative and attract more discussions.

Hi,

I recently tried to download an evaluation copy of ESX 4. In order to download it the system requires me to be logged in. After an hour the system logs me out and the download gets terminated. I tried a Free Download Manager and entered my login creditials into it but that did not work either. Does anyone know if there is a way to keep from being logged out during downloads?

Looks like the link to Workstation 7 beta community has been removed and the section is locked. What does that mean ?

Will WS 7 be released 28.10.09 as a german vendor said ?
support beyond the forum - how do you handle it ?

I don't know if this applies to anyone else ... anyway maybe we can find a way that suits all ...

What do you do if a problem can not be fixed with a short answer in a post and the user asks you if you can fix the issue via a remote-login ?

I specialize in vmdk and snapshot problems and in most of the cases this problems really require more work than a short reply.
So occasionally I agree to fix the issue via a remote-login. This happens more and more often since ESX 4 appeared.

In maybe 33 % of those cases the users are nice and keep their promise to make a donation or post a success report.
In the other cases the users make me regret having helped them at all.

Worst example so far : I spend a whole saturday night recovering data from a user-mistake on ESX 4 - the user promised to donate 1000 dollars.
When the work was done I never heard from that guy again.

Last case was yesterday night - all in all I spend maybe 2 hours on a deleted snapshot - 30 minutes via a remote-login.
The work was successful and the user promised to make a donation ... which of course never arrived.

Obviously a lot of frustration is building up ...
If it goes on like this I guess I will soon stop to invest more than 5 - 10 minutes for a users problems - just to avoid this feeling of beeing cheated.

Do you have similar experiences ? - if yes - how do you handle such cases ?

What do you do if you see a post and you know that you could fix the problem if you spend maybe a full hour on it - do you spend the time ?

Good Morning,

I am trying to download ESXi 4 from vmware, but each time I try to click on the CONTINUE button I get a 'Page Not Found' error.

I have tried 2 different browsers, and have logged onto two different accounts and have the same problem.

Just wondering if there's a problem with the server at the moment, or if anyone else is having problems?

Cheers
This is the URL used from the "My/All Communities" dropdown and the navigation on the right hand side when you are in the Server community. I can see all of the posts in the upper level Server community but can't see just what is in Server 2. Been like this for a couple of days now. Server 1 is the same too.
The Poor performance of this site in general
Hi there all.

I'm posting this question on the weekend as this seems the time when this site performs the best.

Yes I know it's the weekend, I'm at home I should be digging the gardens. The kids are hammering the Optus cable currently, but I can type on this forum without a 20 charactor lag..

Of course being in Australia I can't be sure there isn't a performance issue somewhere between me and VMWare's servers in the US, but hey I don't have this issue on the Microsoft Site or Citrix Site.

Above and beyond everything else this lacking performance must to the unenlightened appear that VMWare's site just doesn't perform well, likely due to the fact that it's vitalized on VMWare!

Come on guys. This is your forward facing/customer facing environment. Give it some resources, get some end to end monitoring in place. I understand this is not a critical business application which generates income directly, but indirectly it must sway the unenlightened peoples opinions.

Thanks for listening to my gripe

Regards

The unenlightened.

Spoke too soon the lags back..

Search Sort by doesn't seem to work
Hello,

I was checking to see if there is any known issue with the Sort function within the search ability or is it something I am doing incorrectly

When I do a Search on a keyword the results shown and the Sort By defaults to 'Revelance'. That works fine.

Then if I switched the Sort By to something else 'Date, Subject etc' nothing happens. In the past the page would refresh when the Sort By was changed.

Does it work differently now or is this an issue

Thanks,
Yes it happened again.

Over the past few days, the forums slowed down and now it again takes minutes for any page to return.
This looks BAD and makes the site so (insert favorite curse word here) unusable.

I hate this forum software platform and I'm sure i'm not the only one here.
Of course we will have to wait until the evening due to the timezone differences before someone is even capable of looking into the problem, which makes it even worse. Where's the global aspect of that? Europe is not important?

Sorry for the rant, but it makes one so tired.

--
VMTN Problems: hidden messages and email notification lost

In the last days there is a problem with email notification, as already written in:
Email Notifications
Unusable slow yet again

But today there is also the problem with some posts that are not visible.
This problem is very similar with the "cluster problem" of some week ago:
http://communities.vmware.com/blogs/communities/2009/09/15/vmware-communities-site-error-report-sept-15-2009
New Vmware account... and can't get community name moved ?

Hi

I have been a member of the community since 2003.

I started on a new job july 1. and wanted to change my email address for the vmware account i had.
But that is no longer possible. Because of problems with the database. So they ( Costumer Service ) asked me to
create a new acount. OK that worked well. and they moved my licenses from one account to the other. PERFECT.

But now i don't have my community name anymore. So again i asked Costumer service and the forwarded my mail to <strike>community_mgr@vmware.com</strike>
They say that this is the only one who can do this. This is now 3 month since i first time requested this and still NOTHING is happening. I have mailed 10 times
but apperently they do not want to fix this or there are no one reading this email .

What is going on ?? no one can help me move my community name to the new account.??

Last Post Time Issue

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone else is having issues with threads not being displayed in chronological order? Normally on any given day I'll notice a post or two out of place. However, today all the posts within the main VMTN section appear from all different times and some from different days.

Cheers
Can't create new Communities account

Hey Guys i'm having many many problems with the community section. The problem is that i have two VMware accounts because one was autocreated for me when i was signed up for the workstation 7 beta. This account which i'm posting with now was unused for a while cause I didn't know the password and haven't worked for the company in two years. I got the recovered from a friend at my old company and now it's good but i'm still having issues.

So i either need to have my two accounts combined or have the ability to create a new username under my other account. Everytime I try to create a new community user i get an error message saying "If you are new to VMware Communities, please enter a unique username. Otherwise, please contact community_mgr@vmware.com to update your membership."

To say that it's not a unique username is weird because I have tried everything including random letters and numbers and it hasn't let me create an account. I've contacted that email 4 times with no responce so hopefully I can get some help here.

Thanks,

Hi,

I am using google reader to get all th feeds. I am wondering now can I setup this from vmtn? I want to follow few users like AndreTheGiant, Dave. The idea is what ever these guys post gets in my Google Reader.

I tried going to the users profile and selected Member RSS feed on the right of the screen but this is not showing me all the posts that the user made.

Any ideas ?
A life savior for VMWare forums with a slow/unreliable Internet connection

Broken VMWare HTTP/forum software does two awful things:

1) It always prepends all documents being output from the server with these headers:

Cache-Control: max-age=0, no-cache

Pragma: no-cache

2) <strike>It doesn't support gzip compression.</strike> Thanks!!

Problem N1 can be solved in Firefox by using "Better cache" extension.

In Always-cache list add the only option "*" for all domains.
In Never-cache list add "text/html" for all domains.

In Settings you should have "BetterCache enabled" and "Never-cache list works as ignore list" enabled.

Enjoy.

Allow thread posts to be reviewed in reverse order. So when I click on a thread I would see the last post first and the first post last.

This is a feature that is standard on most BB systems.

Just thought you should know that when using IE8 and logged in the "Advanced" link in the top right of the screen sits on top of the "Log out" link.

Does not cause operational issues but it is a bit annoying. Clicking the Compatability button in IE8 fixes the spacing problem.
Can we have a automatically added "begging for points" line added to all posts ?
It is a anoying waste of time to read through long posts when 10 % of the content is wasted on all various flavours of points-begging.
Maybe if we have an automated line for this nonsense its easier to ignore this ....

here is a funny example - 50 % of the posts are wasted for points fishing
Receive email notifications or RSS, both broken!

One of the reasons I left this community last year was the brokenness of the system. I was recently invited to a new desktop products beta program and I can't seem to enable Receiving email notifications on the whole forum, yes I want this traffic. Every time I reload the forum discussion the option is toggled back to not receive email. So I thought I would try the RSS feeds but I'm asked to authenticate by my RSS reader (Netnewswire for OS X) and my community login is not accepted, so I'm stuck. Yes, I'm typing my login correctly.

I want to re-establish faith in these forums but I need a little help here. If need to use Google Reader or some other platform-independent reader, just point me that way too.

Thanks in advance!

bridged network now not working-vmnet0 and noconnection drop down box appears always preventing connection to net on windows-help!

hi, i am a newbie here so can anyone help me.
i have a problem like a member dave had, re his bridge network not working, and vmnet0 appearing in a box saying not connected.ethernet0, etc. i travel overseas as well and find it impossible to ever get windows thru vm ware in hotels, thru their cable, now i am getting this issue with my bridge network at home as well. i need windows for work and trading apps. and this is killing me at present on both fronts.
i could not get any definitive answers scrolling thru the site, so has anyone got an answer to get rid of either of these problems?
thank you.
VMWare desktop solution assistance
I'm new to VMWare and would like suggestions on how to best solve our problem.

We're wanting to create a type of sandbox envorinment on our employee workstations seperate from their main desktop but on the same physical box. We were thinking of just putting VMWare player on each physical machine and then a few administrators would have VMWare workstation installed on their machines so they have the ability to create virtual machines and move them to the employees computers as needed. This solution presents some problems, such as manageability. So I'm open for any type of suggestion and I also envision an easier/better way to accomplish this task.

My Questions:

1. Can VMWare player run virtual machines located on a iSCSI SAN across the network? Just thinking of this so we wouldn't have to store the VM's on each emplyees workstation.

2. Is there a way to manage these VM's centrally without ESX/ESXi hosts/Vcenter server?

3. Could VMWare view assist us in our solution?

4. The part I really liked about Vcenter server is when you create a clone you can customize that clone with a new pc name, windows key, new SID, and other things. We do plan on going virtual with ESX hosts eventually so purchasing the Vcenter server is an option but is it still usefull in creating the VM's without ESX hosts since they aren't virtualizing their servers yet?

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to read my topic and giving any feedback. Any suggestion not related to the specific questions I've asked would be welcomed as well. If you have any follow up questions I will be monitoring this post as often as I can.

Again, thank you.

Houston, TX Virtualization Forum Labs
My experience at the Houston, TX virtualization event by VMware on 5/19/2009 was dissapointing. I am a technical guy and my primary reason for attendance was the vSphere lab. Unfortunately, the lab disk array (EMC) equipment was broken, and so only 2/3 of the lab stations were working, and we got started way too late to effectively cover the material. I feel a better job could have been done verifying that the lab worked properly.

All of the VMware folks in attendance did an outstanding job, and the speaker was excellent in continuing the presentation without any labs running.

I would suggest to VMware to either get better lab equipment, or allow enough time between cities to have a full day to setup and test the lab.
Hello all. Is anyone else having an issue with the email notification flag? I have set the flag for multiple threads today and I am not receiving emails. In fact when I check my notification list it does not contain any of the notifications that I have set today. The only thread from today that is listed in my notications is a thread that I posted in. I noticed that if I turn notifications on in a thread and the refresh the page that the notification is cleared.

Cheers
This happens almost daily to me.. and this time I forgot to "Select ALL" -> "Copy to clipboard"... you hit post and the system has logged you off...
You can't go back... using the back button means your content will be wiped by the "great" javascript functionality... logging in also means... your post is now in the bit bucket.
"Do it again Sam", your time and effort is now wasted.

Why on earth do we have to live with this &^%#&%$#$ .... rant over... but I strongly dislike this particular feature, it's not acceptable that we have to copy our text to the clipboard in order to not loose it time after time... not acceptable at all.. OK, time to "select all""copy""post"
communities forum break-up
Hey all,

Am I the only one who doesn't like the new layout of the VMWare Community tech forums? In years past, I had bookmarked the main forum for VMWare's virtual infrastruture products...this included ESX and Virtual Center in one location so I could see with one click what everyone was talking about in both products. Now, they have it separated out so I may miss what vCenter forums are posting if I constantly am looking under "vmware infrastructure".

I suppose I could just bookmark the main VMTN link, but then I am looking at ALL posts for ALL products...most of which do not concern me.

Can I suggest that you create a separate branch for enterprise virtualization products (or whatever name is appropriate). Then under that branch, you list ESX and vCenter products so people who are only interested in these products can just bookmark the parent branch and see all posts for ESX and vCenter in one location.

Anyone else agree with this?

I just logged into the forums using the http://communities.vmware.com/home.jspa url and noticed that my last login date is Oct 24, 2008. Then I noticed that my points are at 1819 which means I haven't accumulated any points new since about that time either. Is there some way or some one who can verify that my account/profile is functioning correctly?

Hello,

Just got a problem - tried to post a direct link to HCL pre-filled search, but there are [ and ] symbols in the link, which are used as control symbols. So the whole link becomes unusable, either i add it as text, or press "Make a link".
Hi,

I'm testing to use a rss reader for this forum here, so I install RSSOwl and added a few forums. This works fine, but only for new threads. That means, if a new reply for an existing thread was posted, it could be seen on the web but not in RSSOwl. Is this a normal behaviour on an rss reader or is ths a failure of RSSOwl? If the last option, which rss reader is recommend?

TIA
After two years of posting, searching.....A question....Can we logically split the communities?
It's been nagging at me, moreso in the last year, since the explosion of growth has made it nigh on impossible to find anything.

Why are the forums not split up more logically?

For instance, if I look for a storage related question, where do I look?

If it's a network question, where do I look?

You can bet it's going to be scattered all over creation....because there is no home. I can understand the logic of not doing it, I've been on forums and boards for nearly two decades now. Too many sub topics leads to isolation. But this only applies to small and medium boards. We've WAY outgrown that, so would it be possible to split things up more rationally? The search engine is a lot more fun when it's not the ONLY way to find something, when you've exhausted the tree and your answer is not where it's expected.

Anyway, I love vmware, it's literally made my career. But the forums still need work. I can live with sluggish, but I spend an insane amount of time trying to find something that I could find much more easily on other forums (perfect layout? linuxquestions.org).

Can I get an amen?!?!?!

I tried using this forums and spent my time with answering questions, but using this forum makes me tedious. It's too slow, identifying new post(s) within a thread is circuitous and following threads I'm attended to is circuitous too.

Hi

Is there a possibility of a filter for unread messages in 'Discussions'?

I have been involved with a few discussions and if one of the older messages gets updated then I don't always know about unless I go through all my messages.

I can imagine this can be quite involving for some of our busier members, so is it possible to have a filter so we can just view new messages or a counter to tell us how many unread messages?

Ok i know this might sound stupid but the system for generating a new blog is not working. I have gone now to three different browsers, entered in all the correct information and when I hit the button to create the blog it error's out 100% of the time.

The error it throws is that you need to enter a description. Trust me a description has been entered. I copied and pasted to word to ensure I was under the 255 char limit and it still fails. I even tried just entering in a single char up to a few dozen and still same error.

I would really love to create a new blog and if anyone can help here I would greatly apprecaite it.
In the past when I look at my personal E-Mail notification for threads I'm participating in, I could easily delete older entries as they were sorted and tagged with the age of the last activity, let's say "2 month" for example.
Today I only see the dates and they don't seem to be sorted after the last activity. That makes it more work to go through and discard old, inactive threads.

Is it possible to get the old view back?

If you found this information useful, please consider awarding points for "Correct" or "Helpful" replies. Thanks!!
One would think that if you are an active user on the VMTN that it would only make sense to participate in the vmworld.com forum?
I just think allow users to get credit for the "VMware" as a whole participation.
