Windows Activation question

I have almost managed to make the conversion from an XP machine to an iMac.
During the installation of the Mac, the Windows startup requires Windows Activation.
Although the Mac has full connectivity to the internet, Windows direct Activation comes back with a "Cannot connect to the internet" message.

The key code will not accept my PC license (it contains ...OEM..) in the second field and gets rejected. I have tried putting a valid Enterprise license in but that also gets rejected.
Questions - does the installation on Fusion 3 from a PC machine to a Mac require a new license? Can one use an Enterprise license instead?
Is there a simple way to get this done without phoning M'soft (2 hr hold delay)?

This all seems like basic stuff, but so far I have seen no info whatsoever from VMware on the details of completing the installation on a Mac.

Cold Clone: IBM Blade Server - Hangs "Please wait"

Good Evening Everyone,

I have a slight problem. I am trying to cold clone an IBM Blade Server HS20. The screen shows the convertor hanging saying please wait. I injected both VMware LSI driver and Netextreme II Broadcom drives for the NICs. Can anyone tell me what i am missing? I am leaning toward the idea that I may have a wrong LSI driver. I would prefer not to hot clone it.

Conversion fails on starting second disk

I am having an issue when converting a windows 2003 SP2 server using VConverter standalone version 4. If I just conver the C:\ drive it converts fine, but the instant I include the D:\ drive, or try to adjust the size down, it fails. Can anybody see what might be going on, as I haven't been able to figure it out in looking at the logs.

IBM Bladeserver P2V

I have an IBM Blade server with a HS21 8853 blade I'm trying to convert using the coldclone.iso. The blade has local LSI drives for its Windows 2003 OS. I thought back in January I had built a 3.0.3 CD with the LSI drivers and tested it. I just didn't convert at that time. I tried to boot the CD today. It starts the vmware load screen across the bottom of the screen and then says please wait. 15 minutes went by and then it blue screened. I have a 4.0.1 from awhile ago without the LSI drivers. I tried that and got the long delay so I canceled it. I downloaded the lastest vsphere 4.1 coldclone I can try next. I'm not understanding why the CD will not boot. I just converted a HS20 8843blade the other day with the older version 4.0.1 cold clone I had without issue.

Any thoughts?

PtoV Network Traffic

Does anyone know the precise way network traffic is generated when you
PtoV a server? There is obviously traffic to the VMWare console as
there must be to the SAN disks. We are seeing excessive traffic on our
data network and PtoV is taking 90 minutes on a relatively small server. The problem is that we have 3 computer rooms (hence the virtualisation project) and I suspect we are generating a lot of network traffic on the backbone. I wonder if there is some way we can use VLANs to try to
speed up the PtoV and still leave the main data network fairly lighly used.

Cold Clone Converter 4.03 - No longer has connectivity- Used to work

I have one physical Dell server - 1950. I have used Enterprise Converter 4.03 (after adding the Perc driver) to Cold Clone it many times, even just two weeks ago . It works with no problems. I sometimes clone this box for backup reasons because I am not yet ready to move it to VMware yet.

Anyhow. Today using the exact same CD to boot to Enterprise Converter 4.03 I no longer get my DHCP address. The converter CD tells me "No Network Connection Available". It looks like there is no connectivity although I am not sure how to test this on this physical server using the clone boot CD. I also tried manually setting the IP address but it still won't communicate. At least I cannot ping the address from another computer. The Converter program does display my Broadcom network card with the exact model number.

If I boot the Windows server (which uses the same IP address), the server works fine. So no outside switch issues etc.

NOTHING physical has changed in my environment. The one thing I did do was use the Dell Open manage DVD to bring the server firmware up to date. I was a good bit out of date but the Dell update program completed fine. I checked it and all firmware is up to date. Also when I am trying to clone, I am using the boot CD to do it cold so any server side software should not be a problem (correct, I think?).

IBM blade 8853 cold clone

Trying to run Enterprise 3.0.3 converter on an IBM 8853 blade in cold mode. The host OS is Windows 2003 64 bit. The converter gets so far and says can't determine guest OS. Searching a bit and there were suggestions to removed media tray and disconnect the blade chassis floppy. I removed cable right at floppy. Still get the converter error. Thinking converter can't see the drives in the 8853. The 8853 is running OS on local drives on the 8853 in RAID 1 config. Going to try using converter F6 to add in the LSI drivers. Problem with the SAS drivers is I have no floppy at F6 time. Looking at adding the LSI drivers to the converter ISO image.

Anyone running into this and gotten around the issue.

Windows 2008 PTV converter fails Unable to find system volume, reconfiguration is not possible

I've tried several times to convert a physical Windows 2008 SP2 Server (member server, not DC), and I always fail at 95% with the above error. My system doesn't have a boot.ini file (I'm not familiar with how Windows 2008 changed this process), but I tried following a previous post about creating one, and it didn't help.

My system hard drive configuration (SATA RAID controller) is like this:

Disk 0: Dynamic disk with 31 MB EISA Configuration, 20 GB System/Boot partition

Disk 1: Software mirror of disk 0

Disk 2: 110 GB Basic disk on RAID array

Disk 3: 600 GB Dynamic disk on RAID array

When I run converter, I'm trying to just conver the C drive - I'm de-selecting everything else. I've tried playing with the settings for Disk controller using "Preserve source" as well as "SCSI LSI Logic SAS" and "IDE", and they all fail at the same place.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can convert this W008 server?

Converting Windows 7 (x64) and 2008 R2 (x64) to OVA and back

Using VMWare Player 3.0.0 b203739 I created two VMs; Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2. Installed vmware tools 8.1.3 b203739.

Using VMware Convertor 4.0.1 b161434 I converted both to the OVA format. No problems so far.

Using Convertor to Convert back to VMX I now have to choose VMWare Player 2.5 profile (3 not available).

Starting both VMs is successful but I get a message to restart my computer.
After the restart the network connection no longer works. (not connected - No connections are available)

In the Convertor wizard I tried with reconfigure both on and off.

VMware vCenter Converter 3.0.3 Build 89816 is listed in http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/

There is another version of Converter 4.0.2 u3 is listed in the download page under vCenter Server 2.5 update 3.

Are they the same besides the version number? I'm assuming that 4.0.2 is the latest Converter. Thanks.

Vmware Converter .sv2i to vmdk with commandline

With the graphical interface works.

Assumption:
From a notebook-installation with encrypted disk (SEAL) can also done a conversion into an virtual machine, if at the time of conversion the operation system runs correctly (Seal-login OK, Windows User Login OK)!?

Helper VM SSL connection - VMware converter

I'm doing a P2V of some linux boxes to an ESXi 4.0 server and I'm using the standalone VMware Converter.

When poking around on the Physical source machine, I noticed from netstat that there was still a connection on port 443 to the IP I'd specified on the helper VM. I did a vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms on the ESXi server and didn't see the helper VM listed there. This was a few hours after the conversion completed successfully.

Should this connection have disconnected automatically or am I just worried over nothing?

Unable to P2V Ubuntu 8.04 to esxi 3.5

I'm not sure what's going on. There are 2 disks on this Ubuntu Workstation (Each 40 GB).

The Converter job gets to 49% and my Ubuntu workstation freezes. (Note: I am running converter 4 on a windows Vist Workstation)

I have tried this a couple times and the same thing happens.

repeated "Found New Hardware" notifications in imported VM

Hi All

I've imported a WinXP VM from a standalone ESXi3.5 host, into an ESXI4 host which is managed by vCenter. I did this by right-clicking a host in vSphere client, and selecting 'import machine...'.

The import goes ahead with no errors.

On power-on of the imported VM, I get repeated 'Found New Hardware Wizard' notifications for a device "PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge".

This occurs both before and after the VMTools have been upgraded.

No hardware changes/customisation of the VM has been done.

Is this a bug in the version of the hardware version/converter ? I've read about similar issues with Fusion but the suggested fixes there don't seem to work here.

Any advice appreciated.

VMConverter Snap Shot size/location, plus memory usage?

Hi All,

I'm new to this VMConverter and reading the guide at the mo, a couple of things I've found aren't clear and wonder if people with experience of this tool could answer?

1, The Snap Shot that converter creates during a hot clone, where is it stored during creation? Is that put straight to a specified ESX or VM host? Just wonder if you put free standalone version on a server, will the drive space be used up during creation?

2, Is Windows 2008 Server supported with converter? My guide doesn't list above 23k but topic dated 2008 said it was in experimental stage.

3, What's the ram usage with hot clone (very unlikely to be cold clone) as may well end up runnning this software on DC (I wont actually be converting DC's to virtual, just using the machine to image other physical application servers).

Where can I download Vmware converter Integrated (plug-in to vCenter) software? Does it comes with Vsphere 4 bundle? I couldn't find this in evaluation bundle of Vsphere 4.0.

Vconverter Clone W2008 = FAILED AT 26%: Unable to connect to the virtual disk

Hello all,

I have a ESX 3.5 u4 (IBM x345) I'm trying to clone a fresh install 2008 server VM on the same server with the latest version of Vcenter vconvert 4.0.1 standalone.

I tried to unselect all reconguration options before cloning ... but I still have always the same error message :

FAILED AT 26% "FAILED: Unable to connect to the virtual disk"

I did not found anything about this on google ...

FYI there is no pb to clone other VM : for example W2003 Fedora etc ...

Does anyone had the same issue ? or something like that ?

Cloning a Win2003 fails with "Error: Failed to clone volume 'C:'"

Hi,

this is my first attemp at cloning a Windows 2003 server. The clone consistantly fails about 15% of the way through cloning the C: parition. The other partitions cloning complete. This is a pretty bog standard server. I'm not really sure where to start. I've inlcuded the logs of the conversion in the hope someone knows what to look for that could explain why the clone is failing. I am using Converter Standalone Client 4.0.1.

I have run a scan on the disk for corruptions / bad blocks and nothing was reported.

convert a WinXP vm from ESX3.5U3 to vsphere4 got "encoding UTF-8" error

Today I had an error while trying to convert a WinXP VM from an ESX3.5U3 server to vSphere4 ESX server with the VMware converter. But I got an error :

File "/vmfs/volumes/xxxxx/ServerName/ServerName.vmx" line 65: File already has an encoding "UTF-8". Cannot open configuration file /vmfs/volumes/xxxxx/ServerName/ServerName.vmx.

I edited ServerName.vmx file, find the line 65 and delete it. After this has been done, the VM is working fine.

Why? Is this a bug for converter?

P2V on Redhat LInux 64bit failed

I did a P2V for a Redhat Linux 64 bit running Oracle.Before start the P2V, stopped all the services. Configured a vm helper ip address but it takes only 1% and it's failed. While the VM Converter machine booting and there is the ip address for the vm helper but i could not ping. The Physical server that i want to make P2v is the same network with the VM helper ip add. Here is the log failed..Please Advise?? Thanks

Problem installing vConverter 4.0.1

I installed version 3.03 of the standalone Converter yesterday, but then realized there was a new version out for vCenter, 4.0.1. I've tried to install that version locally, but keep getting an error saying "A previous installation/reboot is pending. Please reboot to complete the installation and try again to install.".

The earlier version never asked for a reboot when I installed it and used it, and I've gone through a removed the original program, deleted Registry keys, re-booted about a half dozedn times, all with the same results. I deleted the installer and downloaded a fresh copy, but no luck.

Anyone else seen this or have any ideas how to get past this? I need to convert Workstation VM's to my new ESXi 4.0 install.

VMConverter - how safe is it to use?

Hi all,

I have some DCs on various domains that will be moved using VMConverter (which I've never used before) to ESX host. The software is free I see, does it just convert to files that can be imported onto any VM host, like Server, Workstation or ESX? When you convert the phyiscal, it doesn't take down the physical afterwards or cause outage during the process?

I'm just after experience of using the tool and potential issues that might occur as these DCs are very important (they always are lol).

I am trying to convert a SUSE SLES 10 SP1 x64 running IBM DB2 9.7 x64. I use Vmware ESXi 4.0 Server installed on an IBM x3650 7979KFG server (the server already runs other vmware clones). For the cloning I use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client 4.0.1.

Everything seems to be ok until the process reach 97% where it fails. I have tried different solutions with no luck, fx. start from a fresh boot, running fsck, disabling the firewall, limit the clone to only contain the most important disk partitions (I have a partition with a lot of data)

The Vmware ESXi server and the DB2 server are in the same subnet. I have converted other servers with success.

I am trying to move an old windows HP ML 350 2000 server to vmware esx 3i , 3.5.0 build 110271

When migrating with vmware vcenter converter it stops at 95 % or sometimes at 97 %.

i get the error : FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

In the windows 2000 server the boot.ini file looks like this:

NT 4.0 Convert failed @ 97%

Hello all.

Im trying to convert an NT4.0 Terminal Services machine to a VM. Im @ SP6 (There is no SP6a), Im using the latest converter available as of today.

My problem is its failing @ 97%. If successfuly booted servers that failed at 97% but not NT4 As soon as it goes to the OS Loader 4.01 screen, it hangs. The logs indicate that it cant find/edit the boot.ini.

My volumes are as follows

C:\ (Where boot.ini, cmd.com, msdos.sys etc live)

D:\ (Where NT Directory sits named \WTSVR

and the rest are data drives. When I mount the disk using VMWare-mount and list the volumes there is a 7MB utilities partition there listed as Volume 5. The boot.ini is pointed to volume 4 which is D:\.

I really need to get this server booted as a VM so any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the part of the log where it starts to fail.

i have an sbs 2003 sp2 dc which has two disks connected to . One s a local disk and one netapp lun (via snapdrive). Iwant to convert this domain controller to a vm , but when i am trying to, it asks for space equal to the space of the two drives. My goal is to convert the server with only the local disk , and when it comes up it must see the netapp lun automatically . What should be the right procedure? Do i have to disconnect the lun first, and then reconnect it ? I would like to aviod it for availability reasons if its possible

Unable to launch Converter Standalone on Seven x64 and x32

I'm using the converter standalone for resizing and cloning VMs on my vSphere (I don't have vcenter neither vmotion).

I installed this converter (last one, 4.01) on a XP VM, and it works great.

Now I tried to install it directly on my laptop (seven pro x64) , and when I start it, the app tells me that it's not possible to start the converter server..

I've tried on another physical PC with seven pro x32, and the same problem happened

I did already desactivate UAC (I read somwhere that it could be the problem), and I tried to start the converter server service manually, without anymore results.

Using Converter to clone a Win7 VM

However while using the Converter tool, it says it can't find sysprep. I need to be able to reconfigure the SID and machine name, etc. How can I accomplish this?

I have P2V-ed Our Exchange 2007 Server, 1 Node is fine without any problem. But the Second node is giving problem in booting, loging, even when I start to click inside the VM, the response will be very slow or someting there is no response at all. The CPU utlization it always shows 100 %.

When this VM P2V-ed, the initiall configuration it was with 4096 memory and 4 vCPU. I kept the default and try to boot, still same symptoms. I have changed memory to 6 gig and 2 vCPU, with no luck.

Also, in the ESX Server, i have changed the Advanced Settings -> Mem -> "Mem.SharedScanGHz" to 0 instead of 4 the default. But still no luck.

I have also, created a new 64 bit VM and use the existing disk which was P2V-ed, still no luck

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Converter Standalone hangs on "retrieving source machine information" on Win2k VM

Hey Everybody,

I have a problem with one of my Servers. I try to convert it from ESX 3.02 to 4.X but the VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone won't let me get past the "retrieving source machine information" point. I tried it with several ESX Host servers and two different Converter Servers already but it just won't work. I can choose the ESX host, login, choose the VM to convert and thats it....

The Source Machine is a Windows 2000 Advanced Server which acts as a DC normaly but its demoted and shut down....

Haven't found anything in the KB (except for the same issue with linux OS) nor here in the Forum any idea anybody?

PS: I've done over 200 migrations in the last few weeks using the exact setup (Host Servers, Converter Servers and destionation Servers) like with this one and its the first with this issue like that it MUST be something wrong with the very machine...

I use VI3 infrastructure and would like to use Vmware server 202 installed on a windows 2000 server machine for disaster recovery.
I backed up using VCB a W2K server residing on VI3.
I copied all VCB files to the Vmware server 202 and I tried to convert it numerous times, using a different machine name and IP but although it converts the machine, it does not change the machine name and IP as I specified. I have sysprep tools installed. Thank you.

P2V Production File Server

I am preparing to virtulize a Windows 2003 File Server. The total size of the conversion is close to 800gig. In the past, I've used the plug-in for the v-sphere console, but this time I'm looking at using the latest stand alone version of Converter. At this point, I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to simply convert the server and it's three drives, or convert the system volume, create new virtual hard disks, then back up and restore the shares. I'm curious what everyone's experience has been with a production server P2V conversion, with synchronization. I need to make sure that changes to the server during the conversion, are synched up after the conversion.

But in workstation (5.x), when I tried to add the machine, it begins starting up, but after the vmware screen it comes up with a blank screen.

Problem starting W2k3 server converted with 4.0.1 in ESXi

We have tried several times to convert a Windows Server 2003 box using 4.0.1, both remotely and locally. The conversion finishes and the machine shows up in inventory on ESXi. However, when we start the VM it hangs shortly after the VMWare screen. When you send a Ctrl-Alt-Del to the machine a two line message flashes but it's gone before you can read it. Does anyone know what is going on? I've read some of the other threads and have tried disabling the anti-virus and any local firewall settings to no avail.

We successfully created new VMs on the ESXi box. We just have 4 or 5 additional machines we need to convert. It would be undesirable (to say the least) to have to build these from scratch.

I seem to be confused by the Converter's "Local Conversion" terminology. What I was somehow expecting was a tool to convert a running physical box to a vmware appliance. I was essentially expecting to generate some sort of image that would've been written onto a USB drive. Instead, the converter's destination types are all vmware infrastructure product types.

So as I now understand it, the easiest thing for me to do is run ESXi and converter in order to get from P2V?

Wrong NIC after P2V

HI Guys

So far I have P2V 10 over servers from my data center and all got VMware accelerated AMD PCnet Adapter after virtualized but I have noticed that for the last 2 servers conversion I got the primary LAN card as AMD PCNET Family PCI Ethernet. This is not normal because this card shows 10 Mbps connection speed and all sort of configuration options in contrast to VMware accelerated NIC.

The workaround is to remove and install another NIC and then all good, but it is very annoying to do this everytime when you p2v any server.
can someone enlighten me why this thing start happening ?

I am playing around with VMware Converter in an attempt to test out P2V Linux moves. I originally tried booting the Linux server using the 3.0.3 version but it wasn't saving my network settings. I would change the settings, apply / OK, and when I would re-check everything was blank in the Network Configuration portion.... So I loaded up 3.0.0 and it seems to at least retain my network settings. The problem is, is I am still unable to connect to my VirtualCenter... The blade I am currently testing on (BL685c) has 6 NIC's and I have tried the settings on each of them. Should I be able to ping the IP I am assigning to Converter as soon as I set the network properties up? I haven't been able to ping the IP as of yet. When I try to connect to Virtual Center I get the following error, "Managed source/destination (ESX/VC) server listening at that address and port. You may use <hostname>:<port> to connect to a host on a port other than 902.". I am using default ports, trying to connect by IP (not hostname) and still get this problem.

Anyone else have this problem? I know the IP / Subnet / Domain etc are correct, because they work fine booting into Linux with the same settings. Any information needed, let me know.

On a side note I tried the same thing on an IBM x3850 366 down in the lab, same problem, couldn't connect to Virtual Center. I tried to connect to three different VirtualCenters, same problem.

vmware converter helper image not booting

I have done several p2v conversions of Redhat 4 servers to our ESX environment. However, when I did a few this past weekend the process I had been using no longer would work.

The process I use is:

1. Load VMware converter (4.0.1 build 161434) onto the physical linux host and allow remote access.

2. Using the vmware converter standalone client on my desktop, I connect to converter on the Linux server and set up the conversion.

3. When configuring the helper image I specify an unused IP address, along with our dns servers and dns suffix. We do not have DHCP servers on our production networks.

Normally this works fine, the conversion starts, and the helper VM image is created and boots an image that takes care of the copying. However, now the image never boots up and my helper VM is stuck at the PXE boot screen and eventually tells me operating system not found.

Any ideas?

I am attempting to p2v a phyical server, we are running vsphere and ESX 4.0, converter 4.1.0 on both the vCenter server and phyical server.

The task fails with this error in both the logs files and the vCenter events show the following error:

"CreateVm task failed: Error during the configuration of the host: configSpec.numCPUs"

I suspect this may be due to the fact the server has 4 x 2 core CPU's (8 in total).

Can anyone help with this issue.

While converting a Server 2003 server to an ESX 3.5 server I received this message after 95% Complete. Error Reconfiguration failed. With a status of: FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

I'm using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1

Anyone run into to this problem and find a solution?

I frequently move systems from physical to virtual using drive imaging software. After recovering a physical system to a VMWare ESX 3.5 or 4.0 environment and as I expect the new VM's are not bootable. However, if I run VMWare converter using the Configure Machine option with no other options (ie. Install tools, change identity,etc.) the new VM magically becomes bootable. I am assuming that a hard drive controller is installed during the configure process. Can someone please clear up for what happens during the configure process to make these VM's boot.

I attempted to run converter 4.0.1 from a server2008 32bit hyper v virtual machine running on server 2008 64bit. I have sent it to ESXi 3.5 (32bit) and 4.0 (64bit), and the conversion completes successfully. When the OS boots, i get a BSOD of 0x0000007b. I have attempted rebuilding the BCD/MBR to no avail. I'm trying to convert my Ubuntu 9.10 VM in VirtualBox to ESXi 3.5 u4. I exported it in VB to OVF 0.9 and now I'm trying to convert it to ESXi 3.5 u4 using ovftool and I get the error saying "Line 28: Unsupported hardware family 'vmx-06'"

Any ideas how to fix or get around this error?

Converting an Image that resides on the server using the client

Folks,

So, I have a Converter server set up. I have a directory called "Images" that contains directories of appliances; a repository of images for conversion by my users. People have been using remote desktop to get to the server and do the conversions from there. This is silly and doesn't scale. What we want is for them to install the client and connect that way.

The issue is that there doesn't seem to be a convenient way to point the converter to images that are on the server itself. The best I've been able to do is

Turn Images into a Windows share on the server.
Open the share locally via Explorer, just so I can browse it.
Find the OVF file and copy the path out of the properties.
Use ~~file://\\localhost\Images\path\to\ovf\CopiedFilename.ovf~~

This strikes me as sub-optimal at best. Am I missing something? Or is it really this awkward to covert an appliance that is actaully on the server?

Converter Standalone question

I am bit confused about how the Converter stand alone works. We are just starting out with the VMware ESXi 4.0 and eventually planning to purchase the enterprise license.

I have few VMs in VMware server and want to convert and move them to an ESXi host. It seems the tool I need for that job is the converter standalone. I am not sure what the client, server and agent components do and where should they be.

Do I need to install the server/agent on the source VM? or all three (server, agent,client) on the source VM?

Can I just install all three on my workstation and do the migration/converstions? If I do that, does the data come to my PC, then converted by the agent and delivered to the ESXi host? Or, the data flows directly from the source to the ESXi host?

Can I convert the VMWare Server's virtual disks to ESXi host without the VM up and running in vmware server?

Hello to all

We own a vCenter with four ESX 3.5.2 servers and a valid vCenter Converter license.

I have to migrate a physical customer Windows 2003 server (approx 160GB), but the server is in another datacenter, and I cannot use my vCenter Converter.

So I planned to go with my big laptop (quad cpu, 4GB Ram, plenty of disk) with the latest standalone converter 4.x to this datacenter, plug into the gigabit switch, install the converter agent on the server and migrate to VM on my local laptop.

Then I will go back and import to my ESX.

The question: since standalone converter does not support exporting to a vCenter and ESX format without having a direct link with it, i am stuck to export to an intermediate format...

what is the best intermediate format ? physical to VMware server 2.0 then go back and convert to ESX ? other format Workstation 6.0 ? 6.5 ? special options ?

Schedule a conversion on a running microsoft VM

I would like to schedule a conversion on a microsoft .vmc that is running. I plan on shutting down the VM with a script before I convert it but I need to schedule it through VC in the scheduled tasks with it turned on. Anyone know of a way to do this? Were running VC 2.5 and VMM 1.0.

I get "Unable to import a virtual machine while it is powered on or suspended. Please shut down and power off the virtual machine before importing it."

Can't access the converter server remotely

I installed Converter standalone on a debian lenny. Connecting to the server locally avoiding the tcp based login works perfectly.

At this point it should be possible to go on another client machine
and install just the client side of the application and try to connect
it to the server. Well it
doesn't work at all. I tried with linux and windows client even with
the original ports (80, 443), even locally using the tcp connection on
127.0.0.1 and with different users (root included). I tried to disable
the ssl but there is noway to make it working.

All the time the client pops up this error message: "Server logon failed due to a bad username or password"

On the server side, where the problem seems to be, this is the common error written into the log file:

After migrating 585 Vm form an old Storage to a new storage per Storage VMotion, I have 10 VM'S left where Storage VMotion runs in timeout.

The KB articel http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1010045 does not help me, as it needs downtime.

So I thnink I can do it with converter.

What happens to the mac addres of the VM . The source VM and destination mac address must be the same.

The vmware converter is only used for placing the vm for an old datastore on an old san to new san to a new datastore. The size of the vmdks(hard disks) are not changed.

Converting a linux physical machine to a virtual machine to run on vmware server

Hi,

I am trying to use vmware converter to convert a linux physical machine into a virtual machine for use on vmware server 2. All the docs on vmware converter suggest that this is possible.

I am running vmware-converter-client on the linux box itself.

I select 'Convert Machine', and under "Specify Source" I select "Powered-on machine". "A remote machine" is pre selected and "This local machine" is not selectable. This is as per the documentation for converting linux locally.

I enter an ip address other than loopback (127.0.0.1 does not work), and enter the root username and password, and select "Linux" as the "OS Family". (I have enabled ssh on the local Linux installation).

On landing on "Specify Destination" I have no option to select "Destination type" as "VMware Infrastructure virtual machine" is already enabled and it asks me for server details. I assume that this is asking for an ESX or vCenter server which I do not have.

Does anyone have any ideas if I am doing something wrong here?

VM Upload always fails at 97%

Hi,

I am using VMware Convertor standalone version 3.0 to upload images to my VMWare ESXi server. I've tried many differant images but the process always fails at 97%. I had a look in the logs and this error always seems to be present:

I use vCenter Converter in order to shrink the VMs on my vSphere, and I just find out that after a conversion, the VMs get a horribly slow mouse: in fact the driver change from vmmouse to mouse compatible ps2 (default driver for XP).

I have the last converter (4.0.1) and a uptodate vspshere, what should I do ?

Hi,

I have recently upgraded my host to vSphere 4. I have also upgraded to vSphere Converter 4.0.1. However, when I convert a Microsoft Windows 2003 VHD into vSphere, the resulting VM does not boot. It gets just past the BIOS screen, then goes black, with only a white line in the top left corner of the console.

I have tried hot and cold conversions. I have tried changing the various default conversion settings. I have tried deleting the source machine and re-creating it.

This has worked fine under ESX3.5, so I wonder what I am doing wrong on vSphere.

Any help appreciated.

p2v Fedora Core 4 email server

Hi everyone,

So we have ONE machine left to convert in our infrastructure, saved the best for last, the email server.

It was built on a 5 yo HP DL 320 Raid 1 box, and runs Fedora Core 4 (Stentz), and Postfx as the email engine.

So far we attempted a remote hot migration using vmware converter which failed, something about the os not being supported as I recall.

Can anyone suggest anything?

We would also consider the VMware Virtual Appliance marketplace for a replacement if anyone can offer a suggestions for a good email server for 100 users, pref ubuntu.

I have tried with a target disk that is both FAT32 and NTFS and as a single VMDK or 2GB split files. I have turned off UAC and disabled Norton Anti-Virus. But none of this has made a difference and I always get exactly the same error at exactly the same point.

I have just purchased Win7 pro and decided to convert my current running os Vista pro to a VM on an external USB drive. I used the new Converter Standalone 4.01 but when it finished it reported something to the effect that the configuration file was wrong and "was created by a VMware product with more features than this version of VMware Workstation and cannot be used with this version of VMware Workstation".

I am a registered user and been running VMWare workstaion for years. I am using the latest build 6.5.

I cannot run this VM at all. I have never had trouble running normal VMs on extranal drives.

Can anyone give me any guidance please.

Acronis fails, vmware-temp - VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1

I have different Acronis images created with same Acronis 11 software. not all can be opened, escpecially not which I wanted. Acronis backups have all password protection, also there are some increments.

It fails telling "Import source not recognized", but probably on disk space. It does on the first step already, before I could set any destination.

I am trying to import a physical machine into the virtual environment using the convertor plugin within Virtual Center and each time I try to change the disk size I get the below error.

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. please contact the application's support team for more information.

I don't try to convert the disk size then the import wizard continues and the import starts.

I am running Virtual Center 2.5 update 2 with the latest VI client.

Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening?

I read a thread similar to mine, but I didn't understand the answer.

So here's my problem :

From my PC, I'm running VMware vCenter Converter Standalone version 4.0.1 build 161434. I try to convert a physical machine to one of my host which is under ESXi 4.0.0 build 161434.

"When I try to run convertng I get this error message : Unable to contact the specified host .hostname. from the Converter Agent machine. This might be because the host is not available on the network, there is a network configuration problem, or the management services on the management services on this host are not responding. Please verify that all Converter components are able to connect to 'hostname'."

I don't really understand why this is happening because it works well last I'd used it.

Any Idea?

I am using VMware converter standalone for P2V and V2V migrations. I have noticed that some drives are cloned by the converter through block-level copying and some drives are colned through file level copying. Can anyone explaine me why is it so? Block level and file level methodology is decided by the converter on what basis? is the disk size\sector size or disk type? Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

How to Clone Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6.0 and changing machine name and sids

Hello All,

I have been trying to clone a Windows 2003 Standard or 2003 Enterprise Server Running IIS 6.0 and Complus Server Applications. I would like to complete a P2V where in, I copy the server and then change the machine name and settings using the sysprep functionality in tandem with the Vmware converter clone process. Each and every time of me doing this process I have been unsuccessful in regards to getting the website to function in its entirety. The converter tool with Sysprep has done its job of completly converting the machine so that it boots up and turns on. However when I try to access the local website I encounter a page cannot be displayed. I also encounter an error message that states the SID ID's do not match when I execute and IISreset. It further goes on to say that the site does successfully restart.

Here is what I noticed, After doing the conversion.

The IWAM and IUSER accounts were not renamed to match the machine name after the clone was completed.
I had to reapply the correct IUSR account to the Authentication and access control on default website and other sites, after I renamed it to match the new IUSR and IWAM accounts.

After doing all of this, I did an IISreset, and IIS still would not come up. I think it has to do with the metabase being out of sync.

Has anyone cloned an IIS 6.0 web server and changed the machine names during the clone? Are there steps out there that Microsoft has provided in regards to how to clone an IIS 6.0 server to a new machine with a different machine name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When trying to convert a small Ubuntu 8.04 Workstation VM I get the following error:

An Ubunto 8.10 Server VM converted without problems.

I tried with 3.03 and 4 Beta.

Platform is from ESXi 3.5 to another ESXi 3.5 server.

Any suggestions?

I`m looking to put our old UNIX box which is SCO Openserver into the VM, we run ESX version. The server we use for SCO it is old Compaq machine with 6 drives, anyone have any tips how to migrate this thing to VM, I tried to use Ghost but ghost is not detecting raid controller ...

Acronis Backup and Recovery (Server) image not recognised

Just wondering if anyone has had issues with restoring TIB files through the Converter using the newer version of Acronis Backup and Recovery. We are using Converter Standalone Version 4.01 Build 161434

We are abe to restore TIB images using Acronis True Image V9.5 but unable to restore using Acronis Backup and Recovery for server (V10). We get an error indicating the "image is not recognised"

Our method is we take a server image of the VM to create a tib file, then use the converter to convert the tib image to create new VM.

One thing I have noticed, is that the version of Acronis we're using is not supported in the release notes. "Could be the reason"

Questions would be:
1) Does anyone use the newer version of Acronis and had similar issues. What was your fix?
2) Can anyone at VMware provide a date when the newer version of Acronis will be supported in the standalone converter.

Converter v4 Activation E-mail Never Arrives

I have tried a couple of times since mid-afternoon PDT to request the download activation email for Converter v4, but nothing has arrived.

I run the target e-mail server and there are no "bumps in the wire" so I know that the message hasn't been sent by VMware.

Anyone at VMware able to help?

Hi there,

I'm trying to convert a windows 2000 server sp4 box using VM Converter 3 enterprise direct to ESX, and am encountering a BSOD when I try and boot the resultant VM.

Error message is:

STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0x8045D9BF, 0x0000000, 0x001A0018)

** Address 8045D9BF base at 80400000, Datestamp 45069e6e - ntoskrnl.exe

I've tried the fix for windows sp4 rollup and scsiport.sys to no avail, and besides, this error address is different. Is there anything anyone can suggest to try?

P2V migration to VM Server... to ESX4i

I recently used Converter for the first time. All I can say is "EASY!"Love it.

The P2V process worked without a flaw. I converted the Guest OS, moved it to the latest version of VMWare Server, powered it on, ansered a couple of questions and Viola!

Recently I installed ESX4 and I'm trying to move the VM from VM Server to ESX4 but I get the following message.

Unable to open disk for SCSI device scsi0:0. Unsupported and/or invalid disk type 7. Did you forget to import the disk first? Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:0 <file location.vmdk> Module DevicePowerOn power on failed.

I presume it has something to do with the Virtual SCSI controller configuration. I reviewed the config. On the VM Server it was using a buslogic controller. When I recreate the VM machine I chose the buslogic parallel driver.
I eventually tried all three Virtual SCSI controller drivers but none of them worked. I get the same response.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Isn't there a way to Import an existing VM instead of recreating it and connecting the Disk files?

unable to query the live linux source machine

I am having problems converting P2V Linux (Debian) system.

I have looked at all the google results concerning the above converter error but still cannot solve the problem.

I am running the converter from a windows XP Pro system (dutch language).

I have SSH root access, have checked the source machines logs and can logon, i have tested with sftp clients and can logon and create files in the /tmp directory. There is no echo in the .bashrc file.

For some reason i am still getting the 'unable to query the live linux source machine' error.

I have tested this from three different pc's (in different networks) using the standalone converter. The error is consistent.

I got this error at 95% converting from XP phisical machine to a virtual
machine using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client & Server 4.0.1
Build 161434.
Every single attempt fails and the following error is shown: FAILED: A system
error encountered during an operation.

Here is what the log says:

vsphere converter failed on windows 2008 64bit

Convert 4 has special port requirements?

I tried to convert and save a VMWare Workstation virtual machine to an ESX 4 server. But the converter was operating through my VPN (an SSH tunnel). It gets to 95% and fails with FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi10-EDF6EDF60008F6010000000012000000\$Reconfig$'.

If I do it directly without the VPN it works fine.

Are there any special port requirements it wants? vSphere Client can login and work fine. And most of converter can work fine like I said throuh my VPN/tunnel based on the ports found at http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1009324.

I did find http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1012382 which has a lot of stuff. I just thought someone might know off the top of their head.

Newbie Help: Getting my demo drive ready

Hi Team. Totally a non-IT centric person here thus my silly question(s) is hopefully answered.

I have a sales demo hdd with installed applications. This sales demo hdd is set up for Dell D630 only. My concern now is we need to set this sales demo hdd up to be used for our sales team, who unfortunately are all using a totally different laptop altogether thus pluggin this hdd into theirs will not work. What I am told is this:

download vm ware (which version? converter?)

create an image of that hdd (how?)

on the sales person laptop, he/she also needs to run vm ware server (correct?)

point that vm ware server to call upon the image of the demo hdd earlier (correct?)

Appreciate some kind help here to point me in the correct direction..... Thanks guys! Cheers!

Does the Standalone Support VMware Server as a Target?

Just tried converting a Running PC to VMware but I get stuck on the destination page saying that it only support ESX, ESXi and vCenter server. It clearly states on the vCenter Converter info page that it supports VMware Server as a target.

Has anyone managed to convert to a VMware server with the Standalone converter?

I tried to convert from a running Win XP and get the Status: "FAILED: A system error encounteres during an operation".

I made a chkdsk /f on the targed and on the soure disk. Both are ok!

I tried to minimalize my system with msconfig.exe (i choosed diagnostic mode and i only activated the vmware services and made a reboot)
the conversion process unfortunately didn' t changed.

My source system has following memory:
61 GB used Memory
87,5 GB free memory

My external disk (connected via usb) has following memory:
90,6GB used memory
142 GB free memory

My question is, why are 142 GB free memory mot enough for generating a virtual machine of 61GB.
Do i need factor3 more mem than the source for example?
I checked the source and targed disk for bad blocks, both disks are ok!

Can anybody give me a hint?

Import Problem Following Conversion

We have a company that hosts one of our virtual machines on their ESX 3.5 infrastructure. We are moving away from them and asked them to send us a clone of the virtual machine so we can import it on our infrastructure.

They've done this, but after putting the VM into the datastore on a new ESX 4i server, we receive the following message:

Failed to open disk scsi0:0: Unsupported and/or invalid disk type 2.
Did you forget to import the disk first? Unable to create virtual
SCSI device for scsi0:0, '/vmfs/volumes/{path to the VM}/{VM name}.vmdk'

I suspect that they've used a version of VMware converter that's older than the virtual machine hardware (version 7) that's used in vSphere / ESX 4i. I thought I'd be able to right-click the virtual machine once it's been imported and select 'Upgrade Hardware', but that's not on the menu when you right-click the VM.

I need to sort it out this weekend, so can't get the consultancy firm to do anything in the next couple of days. Can I use any command lines on the ESX 4i server to upgrade the hardware? Could I even install the latest version of VMware Converter (4.0.1?) and run the conversion again by using the VM files that I have?

Only a portion of the disk gets converted

I am trying to virtualize a laptop running Windows XP SP3 using the vCenter Converter Standalone Client (4.0.1 build-161434). The laptop I'm trying to convert has 2 partitions with approximately 30GB of data. I have an external USB drive hooked up to store the output on and transfer it to the new host. If I run through with the default options the conversion fails during reconfiguration. If I deselect the reconfiguration options it succeeds...but doesn't work.

I think I've tracked down the problem, but am stuck trying to find the cause. I know there is ~30GB of data on the disk, but no matter what I try the virtual disk it writes out is only ~10GB. I believe this explains why the reconfiguration fails...per the logs it can't open specific files from the virtual disk to change them, likely because they're not there, because they didn't get converted.

I need the virtual disk to be as small as possible, so on Step 3 under Data to Copy I change each source volume from Maintain Size to Min Size.

Attached are the log files from the two conversion attempts. They both have error in the last agent log (that I've found, there's probably more).

Any idea why only a portion of the disk data would be converted?

2 GB Split my only option?

I'm using Convertor Standalone 4.0.1 to export an ESX4 machine (which is WinXP) to a VMWare Workstation 6 compatiable vm. The process works fine. My question is when I specify my destination as a samba share (such as \\sambaserver\Temp) it will only allow 2 GB Split as my disk type. Either Preallocated or not. I have no other option to say "just make it one big file" which is what would happen normally. I verified my samba share can create large files. Any idea?

It fails with P2VError UNABLE_TO_DETERMINE_GUEST_OS().

P2V W2K3 With Oracle Not Working - 2nd Option

We are getting ready to migrate our first oracle server, however we are having trouble. When using converter, it gets to about 95% and fails. When looking at the physical server we see that it has rebooted and and come back with and unexpected shutdown error. So rather than continue on and end up with a possible bad conversion, we are thinking about rebuilding the server from scratch as a VM, however I'm not an oracle guy and I have to try and get the oracle guy comfortable with virtualization. I don't know enough about oracle to even ask the right questions to our oracle person to help them along in the process.

What I was thinking was build a new VM from scratch. We have mulitple drives on the physical server so I would mimic that in the new VM with the same drive letters. After that I was thininking about using Robocopy to move the data over to the new VM drives. From there I was thinking the oracle person can then install oracle, and point it the copied data that is now on the VM. I'm not sure how to move an oracle DB from one server to another and it sounds like my oracle person does not know how to either. Any help would be appreciated.

this error occurs when I try to p2v a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2 (Tikanga) with converter standalone 4, in the first step (specify source), so I can't execute the p2v process.

I think this version of OS is not supported by converter 4, but I need to p2v this server anyway,

so any kind of help will be much appreciated.
