vmware-umds export question
Hey all, go another umds question.

I am trying to export the updates from the beginning of the year to current, so I'm using the following command

vmware-umds --export --dest "c:\exports" --start-time 2009-01-01T00:00:00 --end-time 2009-11-19T00:00:00

But it starts exporting updates from 2008. Is there an error somewhere in my command causing it, because I typed it exactly like it is listed in the admin guide here: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_vum_10u2_admin_guide.pdf on page 25.

Anyone have any suggestions, as I would rather not have to ship 8.8 gbs of patches to our isolated sites so they can use about 800mbs of them to get update 4 installed.

umds question

Hi all, I have a quick questions all. When you download the patches with UMDS and then import them into the Update Manager server, where does it store the actual patches? I'm in an environment where the database is stored in a location, and the Update Manager install is in another location, and we have to track not only the current size of the datastores, but we also need to estimate growth of all datastores when we do patching. Does it store them in the same place it would if Update Manager was doing the downloads directly?

My other question is, when I import the patches into Update Manager, it only imports the patches it currently doesn't have correct?

Also, we are using vCenter 2.5 with ESX 3.5, in case that's important.

Thanks in advance for the help.
Good evening,

I went to clone our template for server 2003 and it says "A file was not found. xx VM LUN00 SRV2003Bare/SRV2003Bare.vmdk , Is there anyway to recover this file. I found out the hard way if I shut off a VM server that had that template it no longer boots. Is there a fix for this????? Please help.

After installing vmware tools, this issue occurred. " "Time Difference Exists between the Client and the Server, unable to log on". This virtual machine is running windows 2000 which has all the 5 FSMO Roles on ESX 2.5. It is also running other services such as DHCP, DNS act as file server.

Do note that prior installing this vmware tool, customer have reboot the server last week and there is no issue. The execution of vmware tools was installed yesterday.

Hi we are using vcms 2.5 with esx 3.5 for virtual environment. i m using 300 virtual machines and 25 ESX server . Total Lun mounted on all esx server in shared mode is 70. now some user have virtual machines creation access by Vcms due to some business requiremnt . now the problem is that suddelny we have found that we are running out of space from storage cx4. can any body tell me the way so i can set alam or generate some trap by vcms server when ever any virtual machine created or harddisk added to the virtual machine. so user or admins will get the mail regarding space left on storage LUN.
Help! Resized virt partitions and they won't boot.
Hello,

I have two partitions both are the same - clones of each other - both running Centos4x

My ESX version is 2.5.4

I went through the process to expand their partitions using the following command:

  vmkfstools -X 15g /vmfs/vmhba0:0:0:6/New server.vmdk

(they used to be 10gb in size).

Now when I power on the servers in Virtual Center I get an error:

"A general system error occured: operation failed to change the VM to the expected power state"

What do I need to do to get them to boot?

Thanks!

Dmotion (Upgrade Vmotion)
Hello mighty wizards,

A few fairly simple questions (or so I hope) ...

A customer for which I'm starting an ESX migration project is running about 50 ESX hosts with around 500 VM's.
The environment is currently 2.5.2 and they want to upgrade to ESX 3.5 U3. VirtualCenter is already 2.5 (since it already manages a different ESX 3.5 infrastructure).

I want to use Dmotion (Upgrade Vmotion) to get the VM's to the new infrastructure. So now my questions:
1. I know I can't directly upgrade from 2.5.2 to 3.5 U3, but if I have new hardware on which ESX 3.5 U3 will be directly installed and new empty VMFS3 datastores, is this still an issue?
I think that the patch version of ESX 2.5 doesn't change the VMFS2 datastore or VM2 formats of the virtual machines. Is this correct?
2. Once I have my new environment up and ready to receive VM's, how do I do the Dmotion? Is it just selecting the option "Relocate VM files" or is there more to it?

All licenses, HW requirements, storage is all no issue ...

Thank you in advance,
Hi Can someone please help me

When i go to documents and settings in the Virtual Center server there is no folder for Vista and windows server 2008.

What is best practice when it comes to syspreping Vista and windows server 2008 in a system center environment for virtual machine templates?

And is Windows 7 now supported as well
Converting Physical VirtualCenter Server to VM for testing

We are giving thought to going vSphere and vCenter; however, we don't have a testlab to perform testing. So, I'm thinking that I could further our confidence testing on vSphere/vCenter by performing a Copy Conversion of our Production VirtualCenter2.5 (which is a physical server) to a VM and then performing tests on the VM. If all goes well, then we can do the upgrade on VirtualCenter to vCenter. Seems like a good idea. Any problems with that idea?

migration of ESX servers from old vcenter to a new clean database vcenter
I built a fresh install of vCenter 2.5 update 4 using all the best new practices. I want to migrate my workloads from an older prod vCenter 2.5 update 3. I do not want to use the database info...I'm starting fresh.

I setup all the cluseters and permissions in the new vCenter update 4. What is the best way to move the workloads is the question.

can I just remove the ESX server from 2.5 up 3 cluster and add to new 2.5 update 4?

or

would I have to ESX server in maintenance mode on 2.5 update 3 vcenter, remove from cluseter, manually vmotion some of workload back to it, then remove from old vcenter and add into new vcenter?

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated and ponts will be awarded!

Automaticly create VMs from template on VC 2.5 and ESX 3.5
Hello:

I am wondering if there is an option how I can automatically deploy a lot of VMs (more then 100) from template...

Basically, I have good template and want to deploy new VMs from it with specific name and automatically join them to domain... What is the best way to do it?

Thanks a lot
Has anyone enabled the auditd daemon within the service console on an ESX 2.5.5 server? If so, how did you do it? Is there an rpm included with the install media? If not, did you download one from RedHat?

Thanks,
Moved Guest OS and now cannot start it
Hello all, I'm a long time user of VM but am stuck in the "dark ages" with v2.01 and v2.51 and do not have any of the "fancy" converter tools.

I recently copied a Windows guest OS from esx 2.01 to esx 2.51 system utilizing FTP from the 2.51 system. Transfer went without error...but now I cannot start the guest OS. I receive the following - "error loading the operating system".

This guest OS was originally physical and we did a P2V several years back (installing on the v2.01 system).....and it has worked fine all this time.....

The .DSK file is just over 34gb.

I've moved other guests with this method without any trouble (between v2.01 and 2.51 - back and forth without any errors)..... this is the only guest that is causing me trouble.

I've also tried to move it with SCP....same problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.....

Issue after a reboot

Hi all,

I just rebooted the ESX as the GUI was not able to connect anymore and it seems that the problem is bigger than I though.

none of the VM are startting, I can not even list available ones ( with vmware-command -l , result is :

/usr/bin/vmware-cmd: Could not connect to server
(VMControl error -3: Invalid arguments: Login failed.) )

Checking in our action history, the last action which was performed on this ESX was a try for an import for a vmmachine ( and it failed )

I tried to connect using the -U and -P option but nothing ....

Here is the paste from the /var/log/messages

I see 2 lines at the end for " init file not found "???

Hi,

1) Is there any esx-command or procedure to find in which mode the ESX server has booted ( whether normal, debug or troubleshoot mode) ?

2) What are the differences between Debug and Troubleshoot Boot-processing modes of an ESX server?

Msg: cannot create partition table for disk...geometry info is valid

We just powered up our SAN and esx 2.5, build 99967 esx servers after a scheduled power outage, and three of the
luns on one of the storage boxes comes up with messages:

cannot create partition table for disk vmhba1:0:3 because geometry info is invalid
could not load partition table.

The three luns that have this issue are 3, 7, and 15 - all other luns before and after
these luns show up fine, so this is not a sparse lun support issue. All other luns
are fine.

They were fine before the outage, and the shutdown closed out all servers before the
storage was closed down. Nothing was changed on the switch or storage.

Any help we can get would be appreciated.

Thanks..Vicki

ESX 2.5.x / vCenter 2.0.2 / Cannot ping/rdp vm but it is sending/receiving packets per NIC status

2 vms on same host, same vSwitch, different portgroups/VLANs, stop responding to ping requests, cannot rdp, NIC status in guests shows incoming and outgoing traffic, no complaints from clients

vSwitch has 3 Gig pNICs and all show up - host/guests have been in production for several years

VMtools repair install and restart - no help although it did change some drivers

Rumor is that it could be legacy devices - I'm checking that this am.

Any help? Bug in ESX 2.5?

VC permissions / roles conflict

Hi there,

I wan't something very easy but I can't get it done.

I've ESX3.5 with VC2.5.
In VC there is a datacenter with several subfolders.

Want I want is the following:

user authentication based on MS AD server (got that part working)

users in group A can see folder A but not folder B

users in group A and B can see both folders.

I've made the folders in VC but now the hard part...

Group A is VM admin on folder A. This is working. Users can do anything in folder A and can't see folder B.

When creating a VM the user isn't able to select a esx cluster cause of a limitations of rights. I can imagine that, because the user is VM admin on Folder A and not on the datacenter.

So, I've created a new role "create_vm", with only the rights to create a VM. Every group has this right now on the datacenter.

The problem is, users can see now not only their on folder, but al of the folders in VC. (because of the create_vm role)

Simple fix:
Group A and Group B, create_vm role on datacenter
Group A VM admin role on Folder A
Group B vm admin role on Folder B
Group A no access role on Folder B
Group B no acces role on Folder A

But the problem now is that I've got users that need to be member of Group A and B.
But then they can't see anything (because of the no access).

Can someone give a bit of help with this?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards.

I would like to give them this possibility, so how can I do ?
Unable to reconnect to an RDP Session on VMware hosted machine

When I remote desktop into a Vista box on VMware I have no problems. When I disconnect from it and try to reconnect to it, it fails to reconnect. I get the following error:
Remote Desktop Disconnected
This Computer can't connect to the remote computer.
Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the own of the remote computer or your network administrator.

If I then log into the machine through VMware and restart the Terminal Services service I can then reconnect.

If I log off before i close the session it reconnects fine.

I only have this issue on VMware VDI machines

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

securing 2 DataCenters from each other in VirtualCenter2.5
I currently have one (1) DataCenter setup in VirtualCenter 2.5U4. This is our true Production VI3 environment (with ESX3.5Up4 Hosts). Our VirtualCenter and Hosts are all situated behind a hardware firewall (Management network side).

We want to virtualize our Production DMZ servers and then place the DMZ hosts in the same protected environment that our other Non-DMZ ESX hosts reside in. However, I'd like the DMZ servers to be totally secured from the other ESX Hosts. To me, this implies the creation of 2 separate DataCenters in VirtualCenter. Is that correct? And, if so, how can I secure the DataCenters from eachother so that I can assure our Security Team that there will never be any "cross-contamination".

Need ESX 2.X SMP and Vmotion Licenses Please

I have a situation hopefully somebody can help me with, which is the same situation I had awhile back and some wonderful person came through for me on this forum. Our company purchased 6 Blade servers a long time ago and they purchased 6 ESX server 2.X licenses but they failed to purchase Vmotion and Virtual SMP licenses for 2 of them for some stupid reason. I have a new ESX host I have installed with our last 2.X license but I really need a 2.X virtual SMP license and at least 1 Vmotion license but really would like 2 if possible. Yes I know 2.5 is old but I'm not ready to migrate to anything else quite yet but really need to get this remaining ESX host going and since you cannot buy 2.X licenses anymore for whatever reason I have nothing else to try except ask for some on this board. I know some people out there probably still have 2.X licenses that they are no longer using so I would be extremely greatful if I could have them. Just contact me and let me know please, thanks so much in advance!

Manage ESX2.5.3 Server with VC 2.5 U5
Our problem is, that we currently have two environments: the old one witch contains 6x ESX 2.5.3 servers and 1x VC 1.3.1 and the new one with 4x ESX 3.0.3 servers and 1x VC 2.5 U5.

Now we are trying to manage all ESX servers in one VC 2.5 but every time we try to add one of the ESX 2.5.3 server, we get an error message, that we don't have enough licences for this operation!

Does anyone has an idea how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advanced
Daniel

PS: We don't want to upgrade from VC1.3.1 to VC2.5 we only want to manage the ESX 2.5.3 servers which are currently manged with 1.3.1 with the same VC 2.5 Server which manages our 3.0.3 ESX servers.

Is it possible - Question on disconnect after remoting in
I'm going to do my best to summarize this but it's going to be hard for folks to get this picture.

I'm have a VM Session hosted. User A connects to that session. He closes the session using the X on the ribbon bar (Needs to leave session running as there is an automated script running)

If user A tries to connect back to it - it tries to log him in again. So my theory is since this is XP Professional when he closes the session using the X in the upper right hand corner - its actually locking the screen or leaving it locked rather because if I bring up my management console the screen is locked. XP does this natively I understand but how would one go about getting around this? I supposed I could turn on VNC and have him go in that way but it kills the entire VDI piece of it

Unable to remove 'Unknown (inaccessible) VM in VC 2.5
Last weekend we had a crash of 1 of our VM hosts. This is now solved but now we are stuck with 1 VM which is Unknown and inaccessible. I tried to remove it but no success:

- From VC: right click returns ' Object reference not set to an instance of an object'

Restarted management services on the host....no luck

Tried to find the vm in /etc/ vmware/hostd/vmInventory.xml ...no luck.

In the Event viewer we constantly receive errors "Failed to fail-over unknown to xxx in cluster xxx

Does anyone know how to remove it manually then?
VMware ESX Server, 2.5.0, build-11548 - can licensing be centralized in vCenter 2.0.2?
VMware ESX Server, 2.5.0, build-11548

VC V. 2.0.2 Build 50618

My present assignment is with some legacy equipment and versions.

When I add an esx host to vCenter (see versions above) - I don't get any options to add "add-on" licensing from vCenter. The 3.0.2 host works ok with a local host license and add-ons from vCenter. The 2.5.0 host has a host license configured. I assumed I could use a host license for the server and add vMotion, HA, & DRS as add-ons from vCenter. Selecting the 2.5 host in licensing tab doesn't activate "host configuration" link nor does it list licensing config below.

Also, if I just should not use vCenter 2.0.2 for esx 2.5.x hosts ... please chime in with reasons.

How to Migrate VirtualCenter to Another ESX Host?
Here is my situation and what I want to do:

We currently have 6 ESX hosts ESX01, ESX02, ESX03, ESX04, ESX05, ESX06

The first 4 are licensed for Vmotion and last 2 are not. These are all Dell PowerEdge 1855 Blade servers, ESX05 is the newest one and it's a dual 3.6Ghz CPU setup with 16GB RAM and all the others are dual 3Ghz CPU w/ 4GB RAM. We have some other new ones that match the specs of the that 3.6Ghz one so want I'm wanting to do is migrate everything off of ESX04 onto ESX05 then swap out ESX04 with one of the faster blades like I did with ESX05 already. Now the only problem I'm facing in doing this is I have migrated all the VMs off of ESX04 but the remaining one is VirtualCenter as we have that in a VM. I cannot figure out how to get this off of ESX04 and moved to ESX05 since ESX05 doesn't have a Vmotion license and we can't buy anymore, and I obviously can't shut it off then right click it in VirtualCenter and migrate it like I did the others since shutting it down will kill off VirtualCenter.

So my question is, with our setup, how can I get this VirtualCenter VM migrated over to ESX05?

My other option is I could simply shut ESX04 down and swap out the CPUs and RAM in that ESX04 with the faster CPU and more RAM but I'm not sure if that would be OK to do and maybe that would just be more simple?

VCB+VIM2.5 for backup of ESX2 vm's?

Hi all,

I already searched the forum and asked google but couldn't find a clear answer if I am able to backup vm's residing on ESX 2.5.2 servers with a VCB 1.5 proxy. All ESX servers are connected to a VIM 2.5U5.

Background:

All vm's are sitting on a MSA1000. The SAN will be replaced by a newer and faster one and the ESX2.x servers will be replaced with new ESX3.5 servers. Everything is already in place but not talking to each other. I already tested to move a vm from the ESX2 server to a ESX3.5 server and it's new storage. Worked perfectly. But I would feel better if I could do a VCB backup of all ESX2 vm's before. The VIM2.5 server has 2 fc hba's but none of them will be connected to a SAN before I know that I am not going to crash something.

1x VCB 1.5 Proxy + VIM2.5U5 with 2 FC HBA's, OS=W2k8 Std.
6x ESX 2.5.2 hosts connected to MSA1000
Scheduling a task to destroy a machine then create again from a template

I'd like to be able to schedule a task that would delete an existing machine then about 10 minutes later, run another task that recreates the machine from a template.
From the options available under the new scheduled tasks there doesn't seem possible. ( I'm running VMWare Infrastructure Client 2.5)

I was wondering if there are other ways this can be achieved.
My programming/scripting skills are pretty much non existent so I wouldn't know where to start if things needed to be scripted.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

How to manually mount vmfs volume?

Hello,

We have an issue with one of our old esx, v.2.5.5. This ESX crash each time we boot it in normal mode, after only 2 or 3 minutes. We juste know it crashes when the vmware service is started, after a couple of minutes.

So the only thing we can do is to start it in linux-up mode (esx safe mode), with network.

Now, we would just like to recover one VM which is on a local vmfs volume (to put it on another esx). But when you boot in linux-up mode, the vmfs volumes are not mounted.

So is there a way to mount manually the vmfs volumes from linux-up mode? Just to recover our VM?

Thank you.

how to tell that NFS shared storage exists

Gee Whiz question - How does one tell whether NAS shared storage is being presented in VirtualCenter? We have two separate AD sites and the administrators of each have their own Virtual Infrastructure. I handle the Fibre SAN environment and was asked to look at the VirtualCenter shared storage on the other site in absence of their administrator. When I asked what type of backend shared storage they use...no one could tell me. So, is there a Give Away Clue in VirtualCenter that would tell me if their storage is NAS (reason I ask is that I suspect they may have one but uncertain if it is being used for their Virtual Environment of the Test Environment)

ESX 2.5: Disk file is locked and unable to delete
Hi all,

I've been searching for a solution all day now.. The problem is that one of our customers his ESX server crashed. When the host came back up everything looked fine. Some of the machines were started on other ESX hosts other on the same host. 2 virtual machines are however unable to start...

The error is on the disk filelevel. If you go look at the vms log we'll see the following error

Unable to open scsi target lun:diskname.vmdk : Device or resource busy ( 2 )

If been reading a lot about lsof and grepping the filename on all esx hosts (to see which process is locking the file). However we seem to be unable to find a process. The disks files are not shared with other VMs. Does anybody has an idea on how "releasing" lock on vmfs files. I can see that you can release files on vmfs level. However other virtual machines on the same host are using the lun just fine. Rebooting the server did not help either

TIA

I have a customer with a 3 ESX 2.5 servers and about 6 months ago or so, the virtual Windows Servers on all the boxes with not shutdown all the way. When you go to START and then SHUTDOWN, it will start to shutdown and just hang at an empty blue screen and never complete the powerdown of the servers. This is effecting all of the virtual machines running in the ESX environment. Any ideas

VM Backups with VCB, VirtualCenter, Active Directory Service Acct and vRangerPro
I have this same post in another part of the forum but am thinking it's in the wrong area. So, I am posting it here hoping this is the correct spot.

I am told that I can create an AD service acct for vRangerPro to use along with VirtualCenter and VCB to perform vRangerPro backups. As I understand some of it, it requires me to create an AD service acct then assign that account in VirtualCenter against each ESX Host (presumably alongside VCB that we use). But, I am unsure how that service acct is inserted into a vRangerPro backup job and how it is assigned to the ESX hosts in VirtualCenter.

I am not getting much help from VizionCore so I thought someone in this forum is using vRangerPro, VCB, VirtualCenter to do this and might show me the way

How do I import VMs into ESX?
I inherited a pair of VMware ESX Server 2.5.2 servers (called ESX1 and ESX2), each badly in need of patches and upgrades. Each hosts 7 or 8 VMs, mostly Windows, but a few Linux VMs, if that matters.

So anyway, back to my point: I used P2V to convert a pair of Windows PCs to VMs, and copied them over on to the ESX's data directory, but how do I import them into ESX? I have a web interface and shell access, but don't see any "import" functionality. The web interface has an "Add Virtual Machine" button, but when I specify the file I copied over, it complains that machine already exists.

And on a perhaps related note, after looking around for the import functionality and not finding it, after I logged off and then logged back in the next day, there are no more VMs registered on ESX2! ESX2 had 6 Windows and 2 Linux VMs, and they are all still up and running and I can ssh to the Linux machines and remote desktop to the Windows machines, but they do not show as registeredin the web interface, and when I attempt to connect with VMware Remote Console, no machines are listed on ESX2.

ESX1 and 2 are connected to a SAN, and browsing the file store, I can see all the .vmdk files for both servers there. The VMs didn't migrate to ESX2 and don't show registered there. How do I re-register them all with one or the other ESX server?

The interesting thing is, if I ssh to both ESXs and look in the /vmfs directory, where all the VMs are stored, I see:

<strike>root@ESX1 vmfs</strike># ls -l
drwxrwxrwt    1 root     root          512 Aug 22  2007 vmhba1:0:12:1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           64 May  2 14:49 VMFS1 -> vmhba1:0:12:1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           64 May  2 14:49 VFMS - Misc Servers -> vmhba1:0:4:1
drwxrwxrwt    1 root     root          512 May 29 09:37 vmhba1:0:4:1

<strike>root@ESX2 vmfs</strike># ls -l
drwxrwxrwt    1 root     root          512 May 29 09:37 vmhba1:0:4:1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           64 Jun 17 16:09 VFMS - Misc Servers -> vmhba1:0:4:1

I wonder why ESX2 doesn't have the VMFS1 -> vmhba1:0:12:1 link and directory.

VM Ware Server Problems, In need of advice

Hello,

Last year we installed VM ware across out servers, we moved all 15 servers at once. Sadly to say we are not happy.

We were advised by an external company (who later installed it) on the size of the system we need etc and on how we should have it setup.

The setup is as followed:
We have 3 HP Prolient DL380 G5 servers
On each server we have:
2 X Intel (Xeon) 2.83Ghz  Quad Core
18 Gb Memory
2 x 60Gb HDD

All our Data is sat on 1 Dell Equal logic server with 4.8TB of data storage, all our server connect to the data via a ISCSI connection.
The problems we are having, mainly the speed constant problems with programs crashing and extreme sluggishness. Servers hang for no reason.

We are in the hands of our support team but we aren’t getting anywhere fast and need to look at fixing this our self

Can any of you see anything wrong with out setup?

Any help would be fantastic!!

Thank- you in advance!

Having an issue with vmotion and CPU feature mismatch that hopefully someone can help me out with. We have 4 hosts that are HP DL360 servers using Intel Xeon E5345 CPU's we recently added another host into the cluster that is using a Intel Xeon E5420 CPU here is the error message when trying to vmotion a VM to the new host. New host is based on SSE4 and the others are SSE3

Unable to migrate Host CPU is incompatible with
the virtual machine's requirements at CPUID level 0x1 register 'ecx.
host bits: 0000:0100:0000:1000:0010:0010:0001:0001
required 0000:0000:0000:000x:xxx0:0x1x:xxx1:x001

mismatch detected for these features:
*SSE4.1 refer to KB artickle 1993 for a possible solution

I looked at the KB article and I'm not sure what is the best way around this. All VM's are set to expose the nx flag to the OS. Is it recommended to do CPU bit masking or Enhanced vMotion on the cluster? Enhanced vMotion is disabled on the cluster and cannot be enabled because there is an error that all 4 original hosts hardware is incompatible. I booted the new server with the CPUID tool and it's SSE Support is SSE4 NX/ED is enabled and supports 64 bit . What could some possible reasons be why the other hosts are showing as incompatible hardware? Both processors are listed as supported for enhanced vMotion on the compatibility chart I spoke with support and they recommended creating a new cluster and enabling enhanced vMotion or powering off all VM's and enabling on current cluster but all hosts have to be seen as compatible. We are on ESX 3.5 Update 3

What would be the best way to get around this issue without a major outage?

Thank you for any help.

Why does VMWare store important files in the windows temp directory?

Hi. This is my first message here and I hope this is the right place for my question.

Earlier today, I decided to install the lastest version (6.5.2) of VMware Workstation on my Win XP.
The purpose is to test the new Windows 7 with which my current VMware (version 6.5.0) had problems.
But, I stumbled on a problem in installing the new VMware because it wants to uninstall the old version.
Then, the uninstall operation failed because it cannot find the following file:

C:\Window\Temp{A3FF5CB2-.....}~setup\VMwareWorkstation.msi

The problem is I clean up the \Windows\Temp\ directory every now and then by deleting old files and
directories that were saved mothe than 3 months ago. The VMware MSI file was gone long time ago.

Question1: Is there any place that I can find (or download if necessary) and restore the needed file
to proceed?

Question2: I find it very disturbing that VMware saves a file which will be needed in the
unspecified time in the future (many months away) in the \Windows\Temp\ directory which is
intended for temporary storage (at least to my understanding). While there are many locations
that VMware can keep the MSI file, why on earth it chooses the "TEMPORARY" directory?

TIA

VirtualCenter Acct, VCB, vRangerPro and Active Directory
I am told that I can create an AD service acct for vRangerPro to use along with VirtualCenter and VCB to perform vRangerPro backups. As I understand some of it, it requires me to create an AD service acct then assign that account in VirtualCenter against each ESX Host (presumably alongside VCB that we use). But, I am unsure how that service acct is inserted into a vRangerPro backup job.

I am not getting much help from VizionCore so I thought someone in this forum is using vRangerPro, VCB, VirtualCenter to do this and might show me the way
Migrate Server from ESX 3.0 to ESX 2.5
Hello Forum,

I'm actually facing the following problem and have no idea how to deal with it, so I'll hope to get some help here.

We have 2 different VM Infrastructures in our company:

4 Servers with ESX 2.5 and VC 1.4.1 and 2 Servers with ESX 3.0 with VC 2.

We migrated a physical machine(SRV001) with the VMWare Converter to our ESX 3.0 Environment. Now we are facing some resource Problems with the Environment and want to "copy" the migrated Server(SRV001) to our ESX 2.5 Infrastructure.

My question is now how to do this the best way.

Can anyone give me a little hint or advise?

Upgrade from ESX 2.5.2 to ESX 3.5 U4
Good day,

I am preparing for an upgrade from ESX 2.5.2 to 3.5 U4. This upgrade is
not supported directly so I need to upgrade to a supported version and
then to 3.5 U4.

The release notes for ESX 3.5 U4 say:

"For ESX Server 2.5.1, ESX Server 2.5.2, and ESX Server 2.5.3, upgrade first to ESX Server 2.5.4 and then upgrade to ESX Server 3.5 Update 4. Alternatively, upgrade to ESX Server 3.5 and then upgrade to ESX Server 3.5 Update 4."

So the release notes say i can upgrade from 2.5.2 to 3.5 first, and
then to U4, but when I run the preupgrade.pl script I get this:

<strike>root@esxhost1 scripts</strike># perl preupgrade.pl
Checking for Valid ESX Host version...
ERROR: This version of ESX is not supported by this script

Here’s the perl variable that the script fails on.

my %SUPPORTED_VERSIONS = ('2.5.4' => 1,
'2.5.5' => 1,);

So are the release notes incorrect?

Am I forced to upgrade to 2.5.4, or 2.5.5 before upgrading to 3.5 U4?
I would rather go to 3.5 first then to U4

Second ESX 2.5.3 node fails to see shared VMFS LUNs on second HBA
Hi all,

I have this weird problem on an ESX 2.5.3 box since they changed batteries on both controllers of a FaST 4300 SAN, but only for this particular ESX server as the other runs fine:

<strike>snip</strike>

VMWARE: Device that would have been attached as scsi disk sdx at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 17 Has not been attached because this path could not complete a READ command even though a TUR worked.

result = 0x8000002 key = 0x5, asc = 0x94, ascq = 0x1

<strike>snip</strike>

Since ESX can't read those LUNs through controller B it requests a failover to controller A, thus making warning to appear in IBM storage manager as the LUNs are no longer on their prefered path.

I read from another post about the "0x8000002" and the "0x5", but I don't know the ASC 0x94 means. I highly suspect the fiber itself as the other ESX server has no issue communicating on the B controller of the SAN box but I can't be sure at this point.

As an information complement, I want to point out that Storage Manager reports failure to set up communication speed with the said HBA when ESX loads while it operates OK while still in BIOS / POST phase.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

ESX 2.5 additional RAID
Hi Guys,

I have added a raid perc controller into my poweredge 1850 and attached an external storage array hosting approximately 7 drives in a single bay and created a raid array.

I wish to dediate this newly formed array as a VMFS partition and host my virtual machines. I understand there is a process of loading the module first using vmkload_mod but i receive an error "Drive or resource busy" as I believe loading the same driver twice is not supported (?). Anywho, how do I go about creating a new partition without reinstalling ESX server altogether?

I tried my best for the last 2 days to find adequate documentation but alas no success.

Regards,
ESX VMWare Tools Silent Install/Upgrade ANSWER!

HOW TO INSTALL/UPGRADE VMWARE TOOLS SILENTLY ON ESX 2.5.

This is not going to be too detail. I am sure you guys can figure it out.

I used the following batch file:

SET VMTOOLPATH=\\ServerName\PathToVMWareTools

regedit /s "%VMTOOLPATH%\disableDriverSigningWarning.reg"
msiexec.exe /i "%VMTOOLPATH%\VMware Tools.msi" /qn REINSTALLMODE=vamus REINSTALL=ALL REBOOT="ReallySuppress"
regedit /s "%VMTOOLPATH%\enableDriverSigningWarning.reg"
shutdown /l /r /t:10 /c

The first problem with silently installing VMTools is the Driver Signing Warning.

This can be disabled via Group Policy. However, for some people (like me, no AD) this is not an option.

To disable the Driver Signing Warning I use the following registry file.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Driver Signing]
"Policy"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Driver Signing]
"Policy"=hex:00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Driver Signing]
"BehaviorOnFailedVerify" = dword:00000000

Copy the above and paste it into disableDriverSigningWarning.reg file. Merge this into the registry with the command "regedit /s disableDriverSigningWarning.reg"

The command that does the silent install is the following:

msiexec.exe /i "%VMTOOLPATH%\VMware Tools.msi" /qn REINSTALLMODE=vamus REINSTALL=ALL REBOOT="ReallySuppress"

Not sure what all the switches mean since I copied it from another community member. Thanks frond!

After the installation I enable the Driver Signing Warning (change registry value from 0 to 1) and then I do a reboot with the "shutdown.exe" that is part of the resource kit.

I have tested this on a Windows 2000 server and everything works well.

Let me know if it works for you or if you have any questions.

How to traverse the entire inventory tree using SOAP Envelope?
Hi everybody,

I want to traverse the entire inventory tree starting at a Folder in a single web service call.

For example: As of I now if I want to retrieve the names of all datastores in a datacenter, I have to execute 2 requests:

First request

<urn:RetrieveProperties>

            <urn:_this type=PropertyCollector></urn:_this>

             <urn:specSet>

                        <urn:propSet>

                           <urn:type>Datacenter</urn:type>

                           <urn:all>false</urn:all>

                           <urn:pathSet>name</urn:pathSet>

                           <urn:pathSet>datastore</urn:pathSet>

                        </urn:propSet>

                        <urn:objectSet>

                           <urn:obj type=Datacenter>datacenter-2</urn:obj>

                        </urn:objectSet>

             </urn:specSet>

</urn:RetrieveProperties>

Second Request

<urn:RetrieveProperties>

<urn:_this type=PropertyCollector>?</urn:_this>

<urn:specSet>

            <urn:propSet>

               <urn:type>Datastore</urn:type>

               <urn:all>false</urn:all>

               <urn:pathSet>info.name</urn:pathSet>

            </urn:propSet>

            <urn:objectSet>

               <urn:obj type=Datastore>?</urn:obj>

            </urn:objectSet>

</urn:specSet>

</urn:RetrieveProperties>

Can we combine these 2 requests in a single request and get the datastores name in a single Web Service call?

I could see some examples in the VMware samples but these examples are using the java stubs whereas I want to perform the same operation using Web Service SOAP Envelope.

I have tried the following SOAP Envelope, for retrieving the names of all datastores in a datacenter

Single request

<urn:RetrieveProperties>

  <urn:_this type="PropertyCollector">propertyCollector</urn:_this>

  <urn:specSet>

            <urn:propSet>

              <urn:type>Datastore</urn:type>

              <urn:all>false</urn:all>

              <urn:pathSet>info.name</urn:pathSet>

            </urn:propSet>

            <urn:objectSet>

              <urn:obj type="Datacenter">datacenter-2</urn:obj>

              <urn:traversalSet>

                        <urn:type>Datacenter</urn:type>

                        <urn:path>datastore</urn:path>

              </urn:traversalSet>

              <urn:skip>true</urn:skip>

            </urn:objectSet>

  </urn:specSet>

</urn:RetrieveProperties>

But on executing the above SOAP envelope, I am getting an empty response back from the VMware SDK API.

Can anybody let me know if I am missing anything here?

Thank you
vCenter Sizing?

Hi Everyone,

I'm curious what kinds of virtual hardware sizing those of you that run vCenter as a VM are using? We have a decent size infrastructure (80 hosts) on 1 vcenter. We have a separate host (actually oracle cluster)for the DB, but I'm interested in knowing how many vCPUs and how much memory people are dedicating to their vCenter VM?
Since this is an "acquired" array from a company that was recently purchased, I do not have any documentation for this system. Any advice would be appreciated. I just want to add it to our local disk not as shared storage.

duplicate VM's in Virtual Centre in a 'Migrating with Vmotion...' state
Hi,

Some VM's have appeared in our Virtual Centre that have duplicate names to valid VM's but have a (1) on the end of the name.

These Vm's are in a 'Migrating with VMotion...' state.

Does anyone have an idea of how to remove these Vm's and or to check if they are valid or not.

Has anyone seen this before ?

I have attached a screen dump to show the issue.

Cheers in advance.

VM Template Deployment Process.

I am trying to understand the way VM template deployment works in order to design a distributed VirtualCenter environment with efficient template provisioning. My scenario and question is as follows;

I have an NFS location to store my VM Templates.

I mount the NFS on one of my ESX hosts (ESX01) using a VMKernel port.

I register the VM Template on this ESX host (ESX01).

I have a second ESX host (ESX02) which does not have the NFS mounted.

I deploy a VM from this template to ESX02.

Question: How is the copy of the template deployed/copied to the ESX host?

Is the VM copied to the VirtualCenter server and then to ESX02?

Is the VM copied from ESX01 to ESX02 via Service Console network?

Is there another way the template is created?

If anyone has a detailed understanding of the template deployment process, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Hi folks, newbie here.

We are currently using VMWare 2.5 for hosting various servers and the hardware decided to reboot itself the other day. We have logged a call with IBM (the hardware is a System X 365) who want us to run the DSA tool to extract the log information so they can determine the fault in the hardware and why it rebooted itself. However, we are loath to reboot the server again as it has live servers on it.

We have been supplied with a link to the following http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=SERV-DSA&brandind=5000008 which should have the DSA software on it, and "download the compatible version for your server operating system."

However, we're not certain which one we should download, and even once that's done (being a Wintel tech) how on earth to run the software...

We have putty command line access to the server, and can ftp files to and from, but as I say, we're not certain what commands to run, or which version to download.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Can't use license from VMware license Server but well defined as Remaining
Hello,

I'm new in the VMware ESX world and have a problem using the licenses from the "VMware license server" (FlexNet).

I install 3 servers of the same type (2 x quadcore processors and 16GB on each system) running VMware ESX server 3.5.0, 82663 and assembled as a cluster HA +DRS system on the VirtualCenter.

All the components get their license through the License server running on the same system as the VirtualCenter.

2 of the ESX server get well all the licenses they need.

The last one get well the licenses needed except for the VMotion license ??!!

Under the VMware Infrastructure client console, in the configuration tab of this server, the "add-ons" say "licensed for 2 CPUs" for all add-ons except for VMotion which tells "Not used". Under the "administration " button and under licenses, it tells me for the VMotion that I have 6 licenses and 2 are still Remaining.

Under the "LMTOOLS" or the "VMware License server tools" when performing a Status query under the "Server status" tab, for VMotion it tells me "Total of 6 licenses issued, Total of 4 licenses in use".

So normally every thing should work : I have all the licenses availlable but for some reason 2 licenses are availlable but not used ?

I try already to disconnect/reconnect the ESX server and also to reboot the ESX server and the Winodws running the license server which is also the VirtualCenter ; but without success : still the same !!

Can anybody help me ?

Any suggestion ?

What can I do for reclaiming the licenses ?

Thank you and regards

Unable to delete .vmdk file
I am unable to delete a .vmdk file from the vmfs volume. This file belonged to a VM that could not be booted. I have since created a new VM and restored the new .vmdk with the original data. Apparently this .vmdk file is locked somehow. Is there a way to 'unlock' this .vmdk file so that I can delete it and regain the disk space

troubleshooting vm connectivity problem

We have 3 VM port groups called VM1, VM2 and VM3. VM3 was recently created to accept a special VM on its own subnet. I P2V'd a server and placed it into VM3 port group. However, the VM does not make a network connection while in that portgroup. When I assign the VM an IP address in VM1 or VM2 portgroup and assign the Adapter to those portgroups, the VM connects fine to the network. So, it is only when in VM3 portgroup that it does not connect to our network. I've asked our networking team to check the cable to the ESX Host NICs and the physical switch port and also that the vLAN is configured for that switchport. They tell me all is fine. So, I have to presume the issue in somewhere in the vSwitch configuration. I don't think it's in the VM network configuration since it works fine in the other portgroups and the IP addressing is correct. Are there any other troubleshooting procedures that I have overlooked or can use to solve this problem?

Just did some trace routing and noticed that when I am in the VM and try to Trace to the ESX Host that it times out. I would think that , at least, the VM should be able to ping it's own host. The fact that it does not......does that indicate that the wrong NIC may have been activated or connected to the physical switch??????

Why ESX requires at least 2 processor ?
Firstly hi VMWare community and wish you all a very wonderful weekend.

   Secondly i would like to apologize if my thread has been created somewhere in this forum, if it has been created, any experience please show me the link, i will thank you very much.

   And thirdly, can anyone give me the answer, why ESX server requires at least 2 processor ? From the requirement of installation : At least 2 Intel Pentium 3 processor 700 MHz. So from my understanding, the co-processor may help in reducing workload and enhance the operating speed. But is it possible if in stead of using 2 slow processor like InTel Pentium 3, i use 1 processor say Intel Pentium 4 of 2.4 GHz >1.4GHz=700MHz * 2 .... ? If not possible , why ?

   Thanks in advance,
Authentification with Pam
Hi,

i have running an ESX server under Gentoo. I would like to authentificat the administration user against unix files (shadow)

and a user group against LDAP. So I put the pam_ldap.so into the /etc/pam.d/vmware-authd, but it doesnt work.

I readsome articles by Google, that Vmware can't authentificate with pam_ldap.so under a 64bit system. Is this

correct? The webinterface writes down the message "Error processing action request /action/login : InvalidLogin Login failed due to a bad username or password."

on login with the LDAP user

Thanks for help
Vista connecting to VM hosted on ESX
I have an off shore associate connecting in via Vista to a VM hosted on ESX.

Note - I have about 10 other XP workstations no issues what so ever.

The one associate connects in and it blinks for a second and goes away - No Pop up Blockers or anything. I've verified all software is installed etc.

I got a Vista machine myself and tried it and same thing. I did notice Vista has Internet explorer with 256 Bit encryption but that shouldn't impact anything?

Also we are using a VDI Broker which he makes it past. It's when he clicks on connect on his workstation that he just sees a blink

Hello

there are performance issues with our esx 2.5.

there is one of the machines that has very slow disk; eg to create a 1gb file it takes almost two minutes on a local drive and 5 minutes in a nfs mount :

how can i troubleshoot this problem and how do i make disk faster at least for this virtual machine, this affects the performance of the application server glassfish.
thank you in advance .

I have an ESX2.5  VC1.4.

1-----I´m new in Vmware and I´d like to copy one virtual Machine in my Windows workstation.

I saw a few items talking that they did this with one script but this is too difficult for me.

I wonder if I could do a copy of a virtual machine with the File Manager , copying the virtual disks (vmdk) and vmx files to my workstation.

And more ,...If I copy vmdk and vmx files from my workstation to ESX , will the virtual machine work again ?

2-----An other question : I can not see anything to do "snapshot" , why? , snapshot is not available in this version?

3-----And the last one: If I do a clone machine , will I lose the information of the source virtual machine?

hi all,
just moved our VC server and all is well with the exception of the performance tab in the infrastructure client interface.
when going to that tab on a couple of our hosts we get "object refrence not set to an instance of an object" we also see the same error when trying to view the performance tab for any vm's on a host that drops the error.

tried restarting the vpxa and mgmt services with no change, am thinking maybe remove the hosts from VC and re-add might fix but thought i would see if anyone else has a better solution before i go try that

esx is 3.5 u3

vc is 2.5.0 147633

any suggestions appreciated
ESX 2.5.3 Can't add a REDO log -- too many already is the message I get every night after logging into the Virtual Infrastrucutre client. I have tried using vmcommit.pl and vmcmd to manually commit the redo and the redo.redo log but vmcommit.pl states that redo.log redo.redo also could not be found.
Deleting old snapshots ESXi 3.x and VMware Server 1.x (tips?)

One of the folks that assisted me with VM BU solutions noted that keeping long term snapshots can be problematic - now that I am close to a solution for backing up my VM's is there a specific method I need to follow for removing snapshots - I am running both ESXi 3.x and VM Server 1.x environments (free licensing). I want to protect my dev VM's as best I can. I'm still new at this and plan to use the VM Converter v4.0 for the 3.x system.

Will appreciate any advice,
Standalone VM Converter 4.0 and VMware Server 1.0.1 (options?)
I installed the VM Converter 4.0 as a backup solution - we have two VM hosts, a ESXi 3.x and VMware Server 1.x. The VM Converter looks like it will work fine for the ESXi 3.x Host but does not reconize the VMware 1.x server where it is installed locally (the VMware server 1.0.1 hosted on WIN2K3 Ent).

2 Questions:

1) I guess that the converter will not work for the VMware Server v1.x - is this correct?

2) I can actually see the the VM image and vdisk files on my v1.x system but I'm not sure what needs to be backed up so that I can restore a system should it get corrupted. I've been using snapshots but have learned that they are not designed for BU (other than point in time restoration).

My goal is to back up our development VM's on our NAS on a weekly basis with periodic snapshots when we modify configuration, we are using the free licensing.

I'll appreciate any suggestions,

Looking for file with physical memory info

An HP DL580 G2 running ESX 2.5.2 has experienced a memory issue (NMI and reboot). The server doesn't have a Systems Management Homepage setup. I am trying to find exactly what size memory is installed in which slots. Can't find that anywhere in MUI or SC. There's gotta be a file somewhere... Any ideas?

Tool Bars in VI Client 2.0.2
Hello - Couple easy questions I'm guessing. In using VI Client 2.0.2 it seems I have lost some functionality and would like to get it back. Due to some of my hosts being an earlier version of ESX server, I am stuck atm of having to use VI Client 2.0.2 with them. I am missing the following functions and would like to ask someone how to enable them.

1.When right clicking on a VM, I get a little window that pops up instead of the full menu of items I can perform on that server. I must goto the upper tool bars now to perform a simple shout down etc..

2.I get no radio button on my tool bar to mount my local cd-rom drive - Where did it go ?

3.I want to edit the known config file to lower the default seconds it takes for an operation that is going to fail - to actually time out. What file is this and where is it ?

Thank you

vcbmounter - port

Hello Experts,

I am new to vmware vcb concepts. require few information on the vcbmounter

1. When the command vcbmounter is executed, is it necessary to give the port number (vcbmounter -h vcname:PORT ..) ? Does it read this information from the config.js file ?

2. How does the VCBmounter interprets the PORT specified in the config.js (or as an command option to vcbmounter ) ? Does it treats this as the HTTPS or HTTP ?

3. Is there any API to get the VCB port information ?

Thanks,
