View all desktops in a pool

Hi,

We have a test environment where virtual desktops are being used for regression testing. The users need the ability to login to multiple desktops simultaneously and run the scripts. But currently the portal only displays the pool and once the users clicks it connects the user to only one desktop. The users have to use VNC to connect to rest of the machines. Is it possible to configure a View Pool so that when a user logs into the portal, instead of being presented only with a list of pools, the user can also view all the desktops in a pool.

Thanks.
VM View, SunRay2 terminals - Sun Server needed ?

Just a quick general question here ;

We're in the process of planning our new VM View system, we plan to use SunRay 2 terminals to connect to the users desktops.

My question is;

Do we need to purchase the SunServer software so that the SunRays2's can connect to VM View ? ie SunServer is acting like a broker/bridge to connect the terminals to VM View ?

Thanks in advance..

VMWare View 4 Download Availability?

I thought I had read somewhere that the View 4 trial download would be available today ( 11/16 ), but it apparently still isn't available. Does anyone know when it will be made available?

Thanks in advance,
Locking Icons in Place

I know this isn't a huge deal but I was wondering if there is a way to lock the icons in place on the main template so when the desktops are deployed and logged into from the view client they are in the same exact place as they are on the template? Is this some sort of group policy setting?

I just updated my infrastructure to Vsphere update 1 including vcenter. View Composer was wasn't working properly (the View Manager couldn't see that composer was running on vcenter), so I uninstalled view composer and now I'm trying to reinstall but it gives me a the following error "Installation failed. The wizard was interrupted before Vmware View Composer could be completely installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again."
A reboot of the system did nothing. I'm running View Composer 2.0.0-192972. Any input would really help. Thanks
I had an idication from a Wyse tech that 6.5 (which is in beta) would be needed. The tech also said they didn't expect WTOS 6.5 to be released until the end of the year (raise red flag here), but they couldn't be sure about that.
Migrating user profiles from Terminal Services to WinXP on View 4

We have 50 users with profiles on Win2003 Terminal Services. The hardware is old and slow and they are using their local PCs more since the terminal sessions are slow. We are building a VMWare View environment (soon to be v4) to create a pool of Virtual PCs (Win XP or possibly Win7).

Does anyone have any tips/tools for migrating the TS profiles to the Virtual PC profile? At present, we see this as a manual process, one user at a time.

Recommendations for Profile manager

We're planning on using windows vista for virtual desktops on wyse stations. In our testing we are seeing how profiles take long to create and get applied.

What does anyone here recommend for profile management. I'd like to see the the whole process get speeded up. But would also like to see deployment and management. This is our first time looking at this so I don't know what kind of gotchas we may miss.

I've seen Appsense, RTO, Res Powerfuse and Script Start mentioned. Anyone have any feedback on these, and costs?

So I have deployed one desktop in my pool. I can connect to the internet with the master image/template, and I confirmed I can connect to the internet on the machine I am using the view client. But for some reason when I connect to the view desktop it doesn't get out to the internet. Any suggestions?

Very frustrating as it had worked a few days ago and no changes have been made that I am aware of.
VMWare View single sign on with no prompts of available desktop

I am supporting a pre-sales customer that is using a linux based HP thin client, t5545 build 31, to connect through a View 2.x server to a XP Pro VM.
This customer reboots the VMs everynight while users are logged on.

The HP thin client does has a auto reconnect option, but it prompts for available desktops and must select and click Connect to get the session again.

Is there a way to have users auto reconnect and keep trying until desktops are available and just send to one when it comes on line automatically rather than getting prompted to choose available desktops?
VMware View Upgrade?
Hi

I have been using View 3 for a while and have a good working setup, providing desktop to thin clients.

It has become a requirement to move my current physical severs onto my Vmware setup, but according to the EULA the View bundle is for Desktop use only.

What would i need to upgrade to allow me to run server workloads and still be covered under the view licence and not breaking the EULA.

I release that something might need to be purchased or upgraded.

Also i relise that a whole new set of licences and / or hardware may need to be purchased

feature comparison between View3 and View4
Hello,

I am seeking a document which can describe new features of View4 and it's comparison with Vmware View3.

Infact my major concern is to address Soft phones issues, becasue we were unable to use bi-directional voice in view3. I know this issue is more or less related to RDP 6.0 which doesn't support sound upstream and microsoft has catered this issue in RDP 7.0. But again there may be alot of enhancements related to this problem.

Thanks in Advance
Need Help with Printers Magically Appearing?

I am having an issue where on my template I only have one printer installed, but when I do the desktop pool and it creates the desktops and I log in with the View Client it adds a copy of the original printer installed and the Microsoft XPS Document Writer and sets that Document Writer as the default. Is there anyway I can prevent this. These are being used in a public area and I need that one printer to be the only one there.
Hello,

I am trying to install the Exchange2003 System Manager tools on a Virtual (XP) PC.

I have installed the tools in the same way as I do on physical XP cients but on the virtualised PC message tracking always fails with:

Access denied

Both machines are members of the domain and have the same group policy applied.

Message tracking on the physical PC works without any problem.

Does anyon have any suggestions how I can fix this?
View Client 3.0.1 - Disabling the "X"

We're setting up a test environment to see if going virtual with our call center is feasible, and so far so good. However, I was wondering if anyone knew of a registry setting or any other method for disabling the "X" on the menu bar that disconnects the user. This is problematic as our call center reps use Avaya IP agent (software based VOIP) and "accidentally" clicking the "X" will disconnect them from the host machine and subsequently drop any call they're currently on. Our test machines are all using XP Professional. Thin clients may be an option down the road but we already have desktops in place that we'd like to use. Appreciate any assistance, thanks!

Does Vmware View Support multi processor type ?

Hi everyone !

We are currently using Vmware view manager with 2 esxi. We are recently having more and more vm in use by user. We are thinking of buying a new server (since we have a unused licence).

Our two existing Esxi are installed on two Dell Poweredge Intel Xeon E5440 (2 x 4 core at 2.8ghz)
We have some really good price for a Dell that is having an (2 x 6 core) AMD processor. Does it work ?

We are thinking that it might cause some trouble because of the Vmotion... that is moving VM from an Intel to an AMD...

If i'm not clear enough, fell free to ask !

Thanks !

The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available

Hey all - Admittedly, I'm new to the VMWare View environment so forgive my ignorance. The problem that I'm having involves a small virtual pool that was recently setup at my company. There are two Virtual Connection Managers (VCM) but there is not a load balancer between them yet. The thin clients are manually pointed to either VCM-01 or VCM-02 to establish a connection. After receiving calls about issues logging in, here is what I've observed:

Certain users can only log into one of the VCM's. For instance, I can log into the webportal on VCM-01 as a certain user and I will receive the "The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available" message. However, I can log into the VCM-02 webportal as that user and it allows access with no issues. Other users can log into both VCM's without a problem.

Does anyone understand why this would happen? I don't believe it's an entitlement issue...the entitlements are pointing to a security group which contains every user.

Thanks for the help,
We are using Wyse V10L with VMware View 3.1 and linked clones

The master image has serial ports and when connecting to the master via RDP from a Wyse client - serial ports are OK

However, any clone created from the master show no serial ports in device manager

I have tried multiple masters to eliminate any issue with a single build (XP SP3)

Is there no support for serial ports in a linked clone?
Hello All....

Just installed so I'm pretty green... I have everything working okay so far but would like to lock down the client as I have a locked down desktop in a kiosk type setting. I have reviewed the GPO policies (loaded them into AD) but might be missing something. Ideally can I set it so once in the VM that tool bar along the top is just not displayed? Also after the initial login you get a second screen prompting which machine you would like to connect and also for a Display setting (Full Screen, Multi mon, Window) can I do away with that screen some how as all my User - to VM's are a 1 to 1 relationship so user A always logs into machine A etc....

Thank you everyone

Start view client silent
We have been testing VMWare view extensively to run on a kiosk type configuration. Thanks to the very informative posts here, we are able to auto start the client to log on, select a image from the pool and log itself on the view server without interaction from the user.

I had been looking at the options available when starting the view client app from the guest pc, i could not find any mention of having it start silent. Is this option available in starting the client? We would like to "hide" the windows that come up when the app start (ie, view log on screen, etc.)

Has anyone figured out a way within the start up option for view client to do this?

Thanks
Office 2007 is halting VDI (Memory consumption issue?) - Suggestions for troubleshooting issue?

It seems that when our end-users do a lot of copying+pasting when using PowerPoint 07, Excel 07, or Word 07, it stores directly in the Office Clipboard (it stores up to 24 items), and this causes their VDI Workstation to freeze up. Essentially, their taskbar becomes inactive, but they can still (slowly) navigate through Windows Explorer. My current resolution is just to end the OFFLB.exe or Office application process (taskkill /PID ### /F) so they can continue with their work.

However, this is just one scenario of memory consumption that happens. This also occurs when using this free graphics viewer called irfanview to resize an image, or crop it, etc. Also happens when navigating through open windows in Windows Explorer.

I guess I would like recommendations on how to tackle this issue.

I thought it might have been a memory balloon issue as referenced in these two articles:

Specific Thin to VM
Good Morning,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way I can only allow certain thin clients to access certain VM's... Right now the thin boots right to the view client and they can enter in any user name (factory floor stations just generic user accounts with no passwords so P101, P102).. I know I can lock the user name field on the thin client using a gp but of course I'm trying to keep the thin client completely generic... The Vm's are setup so they can print certain labels from certain areas if all they have to do is logout of one and into another they will get lazy I'm sure.

I don't really see a way but thought I would ask. If I do have to get specific user names locked into a gp on the thins any tips on how I maintain the thin images? I was looking to setup the master / ftp thing.. I of course don't have a budget for any management software : ).

Ok. My company is deploying View across 3 sites and it's time to secure it with a 3rd party Cert. We are a Verisign shop. I have a trio of Security servers and a trio of connections servers load balanced and acccessable from outside our network. Everything is running smoothly. I have generated a CSR and was about to buy the Cert when I git to Verisign's site to do so a requirement is to identify a server platform. Call me crazy but I can't find any info on what to choose. The list is long. Anyone have any idea?
I have a client that is using a Sprint Air Card to connect to our VDI environment. He is able to connect to the Internet and access our VPN, but when he hits the View Portal and tries to Authenticate, he gets " Login Form has expired. Please Try again". I had him clear his IE cache, but that did not help.
If he plugs his laptop directly into a router that has the Sprint Card plugged into it with an ethernet cable, it works fine. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Problems when i try to log on to a virtual desktop using VMware View 3.1.2

Hello, I need advice or help on the following:
In my workplace has been implemented the VMware VDI and use HP Thin Client terminals, where the operating system of the Thin Client is Windows XP Embedded in Spanish, I have the version 3.1.2 of Vmware View, my pool is non persistent and i have two virtuals for the pool. I get the following problem when entering through a Thin Client for the view, when I select the pool of connections should I give a virtual but I get the message "timed out" but in Spanish and is rare because the view is in English and also i have two virtuals free, so i can take one of them because the pool is non persistent but i don´t understand.
Someone knows what is this type of error, for a moment I thought it was a problem related tio the DHCP of the thin client that has not resolved the names, so I edit the file host of the Thin Client, but after a few tests I receive that error again.

Accessing manual pool internally and externall
Hi

I have a View 3.1 infrastructure with a Security server for external users and a Connection server for internal users. Unfortunately I have a few users who need to access their machine either internally when in the office or externally when working away from the office.

Initial solution was to create a small pool of manual desktops that can be accessed both internally and externally. Initial testing appeared to work. However I now appear to only be able to connect from one side and see waiting for agent on one of the view management servers.

Within the registry key HKLM\Software\VMWareInc\VmwareVDM\Agent\Configuration there two options for Broker & initial Broker ?

Is there anyway of configuring this registry key to toggle settings

regards
Hi,

I deploy Security Servers too, but I do not want all my users to access their desktop via Internet. I want to dedicate Internet access to a Happy Few.

I do not see anything on View Administrator to filter remote users.

Is it possbile ?

Hi all,

I have View 3.1.2.

To connect to Virtual Desktops I use View Client installed on Windows XP SP3 machines. On that client are defined some printers via Novell.

I wonder if Thinprint integrated in View is able to redirect the Novell printers to Virtual Desktops (which have Novell Client installed), and if yes, if I need to install printers drivers or not.

Thanks
I have a problem licensing the VDM. I bought a licence bundle for 100 VMs but I don't know how to license my View Manager Server.
I'm aware that VI3 licensing method is using licences files(.lic) , but the method used by VDM is diferent, because it uses a licence key instead of a licence file.

How do I get that licence key with the activation code provided in the licence envelop. ?

Recovery from ligth shutdown
Hi there,

I've implemented a Site with 60 VM's 6 Servers (DNS, DOMAIN, DHCP...) and 54 VDI workstation with WinXP,

I've 3 ESXservers + Storage SAN + SAI

I have been making some disaster recovery test, and i'd like to know, which are the RTO (Recovery Time Objectives)
to have the plataform ready ?

I've measured the RTO making a system 0 (cut off the ligth) and i have not the system ready until 30 minutes.

Is it too much time? or is it a good RTO time ?

As far as i know it isn't a good time but a need another experiences.

Best regards

Hello,

I'm sorry but I'm not able to understant if we can use VMWare View with Windows 2000 Pro. I now that RDP is not available in Win 2K but is there any solution to use it, for example with an other protocol of something else? And with PCoIP?

Thank you for your support.

Best regards.
adding view connection server

hello,

i currently have a beta environment configured with my view connection server running as a vm on the same host as all of my virtual desktops. performance has been less than ideal. furthermore, my users are now reporting that when they intiate a login they receive one of two error messages stating that:

a) "The assigned desktop source for this desktop is not currently available. Please try again later." OR

b) " All available desktop sources for this desktop are currently busy. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your systems administrator."

i'm thinking that if i add a physical view connection server this should resolve the issue. looking for confirmation on that and also the steps involved in adding a second connection server and/or replacing my current conncetion server all together.

thanks !

AutoView - making a thin client out of fat hardware
For those of you looking to take your old PCs and convert them to unmanaged "thin-client-like" devices, check out my latest blog entries here:
http://vmjunkie.wordpress.com

I recently wrote a set of scripts called "AutoView", which takes care of configuring a WinXP, WinFLP, or XP Embedded client with a user account that will auto-logon and launch the View Client as its shell.

I hope you all find this useful! I still recommend thin clients over converted desktop PCs, but not all customers have this option.

You can also just download AutoView from here.

View 3.1 Agent Problem when "Deploying from Template"

I have been struggling around an issue with a template in which I upgraded the agent to 3.1 Now when ever I deploy from template and I log into the new Windows Virtual XP computer "my documents" automatically opens no matter what user you are.

After doing a lot of research I found there might be a registry setting causing my problem. The registry in question is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Userinit is where the issue is.

On a system that has not had its View agent upgraded to 3.1 but is instead at 3.0.1 and deployed from a template with the 3.0.1 agent it shows: C:\WINDOWS\system32\unserinit.exe
On a system that has had its View agent upgraded to 3.1 but is the template (not deployed from template yet) it shows: "C:\Program Files\VMWare\VMWare View\Agent\bin\wssm.exe" (notice it has " in it)
On a system that was deployed from a template with 3.2 on it it shows: C:\WINDOWS\system32\unserinit.exe, "C:\Program Files\VMWare\VMWare View\Agent\bin\wssm.exe"

On the last example is when "my documents" opens on login for every user. If I put quotes around the C:\WINDOWS...entry in the Userinit after it has been deployed the issue goes away. I have not tried deleting it nor do I know what the VMware entry in this field is for.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

Just a quick question - looking to trial View 4, was just wondering whether my View 3 licenses will get upgraded automatically (like ESX3.5 to ESX4 did), or whether it is a matter of ordering new licenses?

Hello All,

I've got someone at Teradici looking into this for me as well. Does anyone know if a PCoIP hardware client like the Wyse P20 or Samsung 930ND will have the capability to auto-login to View 4? We have a number of public use endpoints that automatically login to a Windows desktop session when we power them on and want to duplicate that functionality with PCoIP.

Thanks,

Entitled to View 4 upgrade so in the meantime want to download the apps until VMWare gives us the View 4 Serial Numbers.

However, it asks to fill out form which is fine, but one dropdown is not populating on the website. This is the "job role" dropdown. So since I can't fill it in, I can't submit the request to get the download. I've tried both Firefox and IE ... same thing happens..

Can someone from VMWare please check your webserver / app and fix it..
So is Windows 7 supported in View 4 or not?

Great View 4 is out, I've got customers keen to look at this the problem is they don't want Vista and don't want to deploy a 9 year old OS (XP) that is now 2 versions behind.

Bring on Windows 7...um...except how many responsible organisations are going to deploy an 'experimental' OS (from VMwares point of View) in production. I'd say very few,

So where does that leave us? VMware say that they have "(Experimental) Windows 7 Support" Does this mean we can deploy Windows 7 and they will actually support it?

Do other people see this as something which might hold back the take up of View? I'm interested in your thoughts.
Vmware View server and clients in a cross forest scenario ?

Hello !
Have tried to search if there is any answers regarding my question but haven't found any...if there are please redirect me to that/those answers =)

My question is if it is possible to deploy one VMware View server in Forest A and deploy View clients to Forest B (besides deploying View clients to forest A). The forests will have a forest trust between them and appropriate DNS-settings. The reason why there are two forest is due to security reasons and different organizational structures, but the customer in question would like to be able to (re)use the Vmware View server that they already have deployed in forest A, and have it deploying View clients to users in forest B.
If I just create another pool with office I cannot stop students from accessing that desktop from another classroom, if I create dummy users and entitle that pool to the dummy users then my students don't get their network drives mapped to my documents.

If I could point those thin clients to another connection server I could provision a pool just for that classroom. Can I do this and then point that connection server at my existing infrastructure client and server pools or do I need to have separate everything?

Any other ideas?
1) Can the connection server be Windows 2008 OS?

2) Can both 32- and 64-bit clients be used now? (As virtual View Desktop, in the ESX farm that is..)

3) Using PCoIP, does the View Desktop OS "know" that it is being used remote (like an RDP connection) such that it locks the primary screen and groups such as "remote desktop users" is in use?
Recompose Operation - Most VM's staying on

Gidday guys, I might be missing something obvious, but with a persistant pool we have set up here we're seeing on recompose operations nearly all machines being left on at the tail end of.

The provisioning settings are min 3 / max 40 / available 2, VM's set to power off when not in use, immediate logoff after disconnect and a 7 day OS refresh.

This isn't a massive problem at the moment as it's sort of a live trial, but we're not far off going fully live as all other things are working beautifully, and will be shifting to better hardware with a much larger pool, and this is where we see potential resource problems.

To give an example the pool was recomposed 3 - 4 days ago, there are currently no VM's in use, yet of the 33 machines that have been generated so far in the pool there are 13 "powered on" (where I'd expect to see only 2 not yet allocated VM's), and when initially the pool was recomposed nearly all were on and stayed on, they only seem to be shutting down after "their" user logs into them and logs out to trigger the "power off when not in use". Our concern is when we move to hardware that we expect to be able to run 80 - 90 VM's concurrently, but we expect 300-400ish users initially, that these 300 - 400 VMs are not going to shut themselves back down after a recompose and severely chew into the resources available.

Anyone got any ideas on this one?

VMWare View Linked Clone Deployment Pummels the Service Console
Greetings, I've been chasing my tail on this issue with a fresh VMWare View trial installation.

Host: Dell R900 4 x 4 Core Xeon (2.13Ghz ea.) 32GB of ram and 540GB 15k RPM Raid 5 DAS storage.

Virtual Desktop Manager is a VM on another VMI cluster - all devices are on dual gig ethernet links to our core switches (Cat 6509s with gig ethernet cards)

I've created a Windows XP master workstation and installed the agent and tools onto the workstation. When I create a linked clone from this, my CPU usage typically pegs one vCPU. But after four or five clones - the service console load skyrockets to more than 5, sometimes peaking at 8. During this time the virtual center server loses performance data, times out on tasks, and all sorts of bad stuff.

I've ramped up the available memory to the service console from 256MB to 800MB which didn't seem to help as I'm still seeing deployments fail during customization. I then decreased the number of concurrent provisioning tasks from 2 to 1.

I'm at a loss on where to go from here... why would the service console take such a beating during these linked clone deployments - and how is anyone else able to deploy these in such massive numbers?

Can't connect to desktop on View server over the Internet
Hello, I'm stumped on this and hope someone can help. I have a View environment setup (ESXi/vCenter/View) and everything works fine if I'm connecting on the same LAN network segment (all machines on the 192.168.x.x network etc). However, when I try to access the desktop across the Internet I can not get things to work. I can connect to the View server, log in there, get a listing of the available desktops and when I go to connect nothing happens. On a HP t5145 the Thinconnect manager switches to active, on a live cd (thinstation.org) the connection never occurs- stays stuck on connecting to the desktop. After a long while the message is the desktop has unexpectedly disconnected (never displayed a desktop)

If I watch the desktop I'm trying to connect to, an XP machine, I can see the local user get logged off when I try and connect from the thin client across the Internet. Everything is flowing to the VM, not sure where things are getting messed up after this. The firewall for this network shows nothing getting dropped/blocked, 443 is forwarded to the View server. I've tried direct connect option on the View server, FQDN and IP's for both the external address on the View server and the thin clients. I've setup a different View server with no change. Logs on the VM machine look ok from what I can tell, I've ran packet captures on the View and vCenter server, seems ok. Had some TCP or IP checksum errors corrected with disabling the offload options on the NIC.

Works on a local loop, everything works logging into the View and displaying available desktops, local user logged out on the VM but the desktop is never truly connected/displayed.

Any help greatly appreciated!!!

perhaps you have an advice for me regarding Flash. When opening a Webpage with flash in Firefox within my View Desktop, it causes 100% CPU usage.
I have tried to change the flash settings for the desktop pools, but nothing helps.
Does anyone has an idea?
Logon scripts on VMWare View 3.1.2

Hello.

We have been using Citrix to present desktops to clients for about 3 years now. We have several group policy objects that are in used based on the container that users are in. In these GPOs we do things like restrict control panel access, access to the registry, remove common program group, etc. We also run login scripts that map particular drives and copy down some ini files and run a process that reads keys into the local HKCU based on an extract that we do on logout (to save user settings).

This all works well in Citrix.

We are testing a VMware View 3.1.2 implementation.

Using similar GPOs (though brand new, as the test environment is in its own new domain), we are able to restrict the desktop, copy the ini files down, read the values out of the registry on log out, read values into the registry on login and map network drives.

About 50% of the time, the login process works without a hitch. The users map the drive letters, the registry entries get read in (we can see this using a verbose command) and the world is golden.

The other 50% of the time, it looks like the GPO is not read in. I re enabled access to the start menu and access to the command prompt and even when the GPOs are not applied, gpresult shows that the correct GPOs are applied and in the correct order.

We are using a mandatory profile for standard login.

Any thoughts on why the login scripts don't run sometimes?

The client machines are VMs of Windows XP Pro spk3, 32 bit.. The servers are 64 bit Windows 2003, SPK2, Using GPMC to modify GPOs.

I can a attach HTML outputs of the GPOs and text of the login scripts if required.

Unhappy User Experience of VM
Ok I need everyones help here. Basically I have setup our VDI solution using ESX 3.5 VDM 2 using Wyse V90L's to connect to VM. I have setup to VM packages. The first package is basically your WinXP SP2 with basic apps like MS Office, Adobe Reader and Multimedia programs. Nothing out of the ordinary. The second was built upon the first except for some graphic intensive map applications.

Now even people using the first build (very basic package) have major complains about performance. They get black squares often where the graphics just dont show. There is also a lag in the responsiveness of most apps. Basically its really heavy.

Now were getting complaints and users are requesting regular PC's as a replacement. Where does my problem lie? Is it in the initial image that was created? Could it be it was created incorrectly? Network load is fine with pleanty to spare.

Again, I need any feedback I can get so dont hesitate.

Can't login to Administrator View console (Not a question, just an Answer)
Hi,

I have tested installation of Connection Server on a VM and I had some trouble to connect to Administrator View Console. Web page start to open but hangs.

Problem was on JVM setting and you can change it easily in registry :

HKLM\Software\VMWare, Inc.\VMWare VDM\Plugins\wsnm\tomcatService\Params

Choose : JvmOptions

You will see command line like this : -Xms128m -Xmx1024m ....

Change Xmx parameter to "-Xmx512m"

Restart VDM service

It will works fine now

VM ACE vs VDI Offline desktop

Can someone highlight the differances between VM ACE vs VDI offline desktop? We are looking to deploy encrpyted sessions to workstations. Mainly because we do not want anything from the host OS infecting anything in an isolated environment like ACE. Does offline desktop accomplish anything like this? Like to maybe keep a key logger from getting keystrokes inside an offline desktop?
Issue with single sign on on SOME desktop pools
Hallo

We have a client with VMware View 3.1.2 installed. It is running on an ESX3 update4 environment. The client has noticed that after a patch, update or after adding a new program or software, that the single sign on does not work anymore. If you disconnect from the VM and reconnect to it, it works 100% fine, but not as soon as you connect to a "fresh" VM. If the VMware View agent on the base is reloaded, this problem disappears, but the client would not like to do this each and every time.

Any suggestions or possible starting points for troubleshooting?

Thanks

View Composer SAN considerations
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to ask how people have setup their SAN for View Composer. I know that it is quite good to seperate the OS disks and the user data into different datastores, which I have done. But im trying to find out whether it would a good idea to keep the OS Data and gold image (which includes snapshots) together on the same RAID 1/0 LUN and how it would affect perfomance for users. Im trying to find documentation on it, but I haven't had any luck.

Any input would be appreciated

Thanks,
Non-persistent desktops take ten minutes to log in
A customer is reporting issues using the IBM Notes client with View v3.1.

The desktops are configured as non-persistent, and they are reporting problems problems loging in. When the user logs in, there is data that is copied to the VM that contains the users personal info for Notes, such as their address book, and other items. Because this data is copied at log in, there is a delay, sometimes up to ten minutes, before the user is actually logged in.

Has anyone seen this behavior with Notes or any other applicaiton that relies on user profile information and might have suggestions? Thanks, -Jeff

Touch screens and VMware View - Will it work, and what hardware to use?

I have an initiative to use touch-screen based computers in our simulated patient training lab (medical university) for the patients to fill out a simple web-based evaluation of students after the mock visits.
We would like to find a touch screen based system that uses VMware view and a Thin Client, and I wanted to see if anyone has experience using touch screens with VMware View, and if there are any all-in-one units that include the thinclient in the touch screen.

I have also considered using a thick system such as the MSI Wind AE1900 all-in-one 18.5'' touch widescreen, then loading on a view agent. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Slow Connection with a WYSE V90L

We are testing VMware View as a possible solution in our hospital. We have log login times that make most devices unacceptable to our physician group. VMWare View, when run from a laptop or a new WYSE R90L (Wireless N) makes a connection and brings up a desktop in approximately 10 seconds or less. The V90L machines (1200 Eden, 2 GB Flash and 1 GB RAM) take 25 to 30 seconds to make this same connection wired or wireless.

Looking at the application event viewer it seems that after the "Windows client started" event there is a long delay (20-30 seconds) until the next entry "Tunnel Unnamed: connected to server'xxx.xxx.xxx' start tunnel protocol. The logon screen for VMView remains on the screen during this gap, once the connection is established the display of the new desktop is very quick.

We never show any memomry spikes and wswc.exe causes a few very brief blips when looking in task manager during the process.

Any idea how to get the login and presentation of the virtual desktop to equal the R90L would be greatly appreciated. I have 50+ of the V90L and need to get them up to speed.

Thanks

Added the DNS suffix to my TCP\IP settings and the thing simply flies. Problem seems resolved.

View Web Access and Novell
Unfortunately, I must add the Novell client on my VDI sessions and I was if there was a way to login once and have View pass my AD/edirectory credentials to the Novell client? I can get it to work on a thin client with the View client installed and some reg hacks, but what about someone using View Web access? Is there a way for someone to use the web front end and have credentials passed to the novel client so they just login one time? Currently they have to login to View (Web) then the Novell window prompts them to login again. Anyone know if this is even possible? Thanks

View service account - permissions in vCenter
The security chap has asked me to investigate if the service account for View can have anything less than Administrator permissions at the root of the vCenter heirarchy.

Has anyone tried reducing the rights of the service account successfully?

We will have dedicated hosts (in a dedicated cluster) for VDI so is it just a case of:

1. Giving the account admin permissions at the level of the Inventory folder (VMs and Templates view) where the VMs will go

2. Giving the accoun admin permissions at the VDI cluster level

?

We are not using Composer, so that simplifies things a bit.

I'm going to give this a try today but would be interested if anyone else has done something similar.

Thanks
DNS Problem....
Hello Everyone...

All of a sudden after successfully logging into my VmView Portal I get this error (it has worked in the past).

" A connection to the View Server https://server-name:443 could not be established. The server name could not be resolved."

Does anyone know where it gets that server name from? It is listing the wrong server name all of a sudden. I know I can change the DNS server and it will work but I don't understand why it changed or how that link really works.

Vmware View hangs when discovering VC
hi guys

Sometimes (not all the time) when I am working with Vmware View Version 3.1.1 and adding new desktops my View Servers hangs when I press the Next Button,

it hangs here, you select you VC server I click next and Vmware View just stops there the only way to get it back is rebooting the Vmware View Services on windows or rebooting the physical server but this takes all my View sessions down so my users get impacted.

I added the screen when I got stuck

any idea what could be causing this issue?

thanks a lot

Error conencting with Vmware View Client
hi guys

Software
View 3.1.2
Vmware View 3.1.2
View Agent 3.1.2

I created an individual Desktop.
VM Windows XP SP3, I enabled Remote Desktop (RDP) and added domain users as the group to have access to
that VM.

Now I use the acount test which is part of Domain Users.

I open Vmware View Client I get the WinXP that is entitled to Domain Users but when I click connect
Hardware for VMware View

I'm a college tech and I'm really pushing hard for VMware View in our labs. I have tested some of the questionable software titles and it seems to work nice! YouTube doesn't very well, but the labs are for homework right?!

Below is what we are looking at right now for lab rotations (Macs excluded). If you figure ~$1000/PC, you can get a rough idea on how much we COULD spend on a given year on the View setup/infrastructure. Using the current desktops as clients, we could stretch it even more. We would roll out the labs each year according to the rotation, but we could probably combine years 2011 and 2012. Make sense?
2009: 70 (~$70K budget)
2010: 61 (~$61K budget)
2011: 42 (~$42K budget)
2012: 8 (~$8K budget)

*Current Hardware: *
Pretty much the only potentially useful hardware are three Dell PE2950's with 8GB RAM and 2xDC 3GHz procs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we would like quad-cores since we license per socket!

Hardware Questions*

- How many servers and SAN(s) would it take to handle ~200 VMs running?
- What type of SAN storage solution do people recommend? Sun? EMC? NetApp? NetApp dedupe is cool, but more storage is getting cheaper! Sun 7000 series stuff is cool. Worth it though for VMs?
- What protocol should we use? Fiber Channel? iSCSI? NFS?
- How much storage would we need? Figuring roughly each VM would be 30GB x 180 computers + ~400GB for servers = ~6TB right?
- I figure we would start off this summer with a SAN, switches, and three-four servers for ESX/View cluster. Maybe the second year add a second SAN for redundancy and more servers? Third year, add more servers. Fourth year would be a wash. See where we are moving forward.

Any other thoughts, suggestions, etc, I should be thinking about or looking at?

Connecting to view from the Internet
Hi all.

I made a big mistake with my security server (didn't back it up) and now i have a bad server. Can't boot teh server because of a stop erro and now i have to rebuild it. I think i have everything done. Copied the config file to the appropriate directory, made all ip addresses the same and istalled the software. When i try to go to either the IP addrss or the FQDN, i can get to the login screen, login with my credentials but after that i get teh following messages...A connection to the View Server could not be established. and The connection to the View Connection Server is not started. That is it. What am i missing? I can login just fine inside teh office but can't externally. Any help is appreciated. I am running Views 3.1.2. Thanks.
View Security Server 3.1
Hello,

I'm attempting to install and configure a View Security Server in our virtual desktop environment. I've installed and configured the View Manager server associated with the Security Server, and created the locked.properties file.

The issue we're having is with the external facing firewall configuration. Due to security concerns, the security server was placed inside of our network (though obviously not on the domain). Meaning that there are no firewalls between the Security Server and the View connection server. The only firewall lies between the client on an external network and the security server. The security server has a NAT'd external address. According to the documentation, in this configuration, only port 443 should be open on this firewall for inbound SSL traffic. Yet, when all ports are closed other than 443, we are unable to connect (or telnet) to the security server from an outside network. When the firewall rule is set to allow ANY TCP traffic to the external address, we can connect perfectly fine.

Are there any other ports that need to be open for https traffic to the security server? And yes, we have tried opening both 80 and 443.

Both the security server and the connection manager have Windows 2003 and VMware View 3.1.2 installed. The firewall is a Cisco ASA 5520.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Linked Clones question...
So I have a "golden image" with a few snapshots created on it. I power down the VM and start the wizard on my View Manager server to deploy from that VM using "linked clone" technology. The issue is when I get to the screen to the "default image" screen it doesn't show any of the VM's snap shots. I already have other linked clone pools from other VM's so I know the feature works in my farm. It just doesn't seem to work from this VM. If I do not use link clone technology and just turn the VM into a template I can spin one off of the VM.....Any thoughts ?

Adding manual desktop pool, VMs not listed
When adding VMs to a View manual desktop pool the VMs that need to be added are not listed under Desktop Sources. There are other VMs listed but not the ones that need added.

There are a total of 3 VMs (VM-1, VM-2, VM-3) that were cloned from the same VM (VM-Base). Sysprep was ran on them to change their SIDs. One on those VMs (VM-3) did show up in the list and can be added however VM-1 and VM-2 do not.
