Becoming a VCP?

Hi,

I've recently done the ESX 2.5 course, came back to work set the box up and its running great.

Now I want to sit the exam but I'm not sure just attending the course and setting up 1 ESX box with 8 VMS' is enough background.

Can anyone recommend a decent study guide or point me in the direction of practice exams etc.

Thanks in advance.

Opinions about Veeam FastSCP for ESX from Veeam.com

Has anyone tried products from Veeam, any opinions on it ???

Veeam seems to have products that compete with Virtual Center for managing ESX servers. Maybe not all the functions, but at a ridiculously small price...

Just wondering...

Updating processor count Windows 2003 Standard SP1 virtual machine

I am about to update the processor count from 1 to 2 processors on a Windows 2003 Standard SP1 virtual machine. Has anyone done this before? Was the migration successful? Are there any gotchas to be aware of?
I am concerned as there is a warning in Virtual Infrastructure Client saying the server may become unstable.
Virtual Networking of VMs accross ESX 3.x hosts

Hi,

Is there anyway to create a private virtual network that can be shared and accessible across ESX hosts?

E.g I have a number of VMs distributed across 2 hosts in the datacentre. Each host connects to the physical network (192.1.1.x) via their respective default vSwitch0 virtual switches. I created vSwitch1 on ESX-host1 to be used as a private virtual network for 3 VMs on a patch testing network (192.1.2.x) -this is separate from physical network.

Is there anyway I can join other VMs located on ESX-host2 to the testing network (192.1.2.x) on ESX-host1?

This will allow us to create a truly expandable virtual network for the patch testing network regardless of the location of the running vmware images.

Or can the virtual vSwitch1 created on different ESX hosts be linked in anyway from VC2 server?

Thanks.

virtualization of servers..

Hi,

We are planning to move our servers in the vmware containers without going through all the reinstallment process from the scratch. So what we are planning is to make the image of the main server and then move it onto the virtual container.

Earlier when we had replicated the main server( to other machines) we had used Systemrescue cd and all went fine. But this time, when we run that cd inside the container, I cannot temporarily download the image files(of the main server) as it runs out of disk space and i have not been able to migrate the system because of it.

Is there any other way by which i can directly migrate the system to the vmware container without needing to reinstall ? As we have linux as the o/s, we also cannot use vmware converter either.

you help will be highly appreciated.

Platinum support

Is it normal to wait almost 3 hours for a call back on a critical call?

I'm new to this and I've only logged a couple of calls in the past year. This was the first critical one. Ya know ..... host dead, 30 VM's down, vmotion not working, company out of business. I finally gave up and left. I left an alternate number for them to call and wouldn't you know it, they finally left a voice mail at the first number almost 3 hours later .... of course, I was at the second number. Here it is, the next day and I'm still down.

Can you lower your support to gold if you initially bought platinum? If that's the kind of support I'm going to get anyway, I might as well save some money.

Moving from Intel to AMD servers.

Hello,
We currently have an esx cluster setup with 2 Dell Intel Xeon servers. In the coming weeks we are looking to replace these with 4 Dell AMD based servers.
Is it simply a case of shutting down all the vm's on the old servers, registering them on the new servers and booting them?
(im not worried about the ESX config its just more wondering if a VM expecting an intel processor will boot when it has changed to AMD!)

Cheers

ESX 3 vmware-tools.rpm and custom kernel

One of our thoughts in easing new machine builds was to switch to the .rpm distrib and deploy it centrally.

Some info ...

RHEL4 (server type deployments)
VMware ESX 3
BusLogic SCSI controller emulation
RHN Satellite
modified stock kernel (-vmware suffix to version)
- add BusLogic support
- decrease kernel HZ from 1000 to 100

Problem is that we want to modify the distrib kernel to incude the BusLogic drivers and cut the HZ back to 100 to help keep better time in the 2.6 kernel clock. When we do this (kernel-xxx-vmware) the vmware-tools.rpm will require us to also distrib gcc and the kernel headers, which we do not want to do. We also do not want to corrupt the name space in our central repo by re-using the default kernel names.

Since we just patch the .spec file from Red Hat and rebuild the kernel rpms it would be nice if such an option existed for the vmware-tools. Has anyone come up with a .spec file that could be used to patch and rpmbuild --rebuild the vmware-tools rpm with the directory structure to support the new kernel version name or something else o we could overcome the gcc etc. requirement?

Newbie to Virtualization

I've heard of virtualization for years but this is the first time I've decided to experiement with it. Here are couple of questions I have.

1. Will I be able to run multiple operating systems concurrently in the same computer?
2. If I do run, let's say, three operating systems of Windows XP Pro and Vista in the same machine, will it slow down the performance? Another word, will my computer be just crawling?
3. What is the recommended hardware requirements for running two Windows XP and one Vista in the same machine?

If all my questions above are totally irrelevent of virtualization then please explain how virtualization works.

Thanks!

I´m using VM Workstation for a half year aproximately I like it very much. I bought it for OS testing purposes.

Now I´m interested in use VMWare for other purposes too.

Since the first contact with VMWare I´m a little confused with all the products.

Can anyone explain the differences between all the products, for which intention is each version, why is VMSever (I think better than Workstation) for free and Workstation selled?
I bet this has been asked but a quick search didn't reveal an answer.

Is there a template doc for detailing the exisiting/proposed config of a ESX host server before I start writing up my notes?
No more VMTN... ???

What the heck is this about? I sincerely hope this is not the case, because I love my VMTN subscription...

http://www.virtualization.info/2006/12/vmware-fades-out-vmtn-subscription.html

VMware fades out VMTN Subscription
Wednesday, December 13, 2006

Without a formal announcement VMware just fade out its VMTN Subscription from every page of its official site.

The VMTN Subscription, launched summer 2005, in a very cheap offering allowing developers to use most of VMware products at $299 annual subscription, mimicking the famous Microsoft Solution Developer Network (MSDN).

So far the offering raised notable consensus, even winning awards as innovative product for development communities.

Today the VMTN Subscription disappeared from development and test products page, from all products page, from the VMware Store, from the VMTN Online page and even from the Download page.

At the moment of writing only the direct link to product description is working, as well as the direct link to product purchase in the VMware Store, but transaction will not complete successfully.
Can anyone give me a link that shows what the Accelerator Kit is please? We're going through IBM to purchase VI3 and asked for the Accelerator Kit. We're being told that it doesn't exist. in fact, they are saying that there are no "KITS" available for VMware and we have to purchase everything seperatley. We're hoping to be able to point them to a link on VMware's website that shows that the Accelerator Kit does exist.

Hello,
I have little experience with LINUX and I need to format a SAN attached LUN as something other than VMFS2 (in my case) so I can get backups of the VMs.

I don't know of the commands to see all attached LUNs regardless of type and how to know for certain I am working with the right one once I locate it.

df only shows me already formatted disks and vdf shows me VMFS disk in addition.

Any help would be appreciated.
I am studying for the vi3 exam.
I am busy rereading all the docs and making notes for myself, but i noticed that some seperate docs and the online library are out of sync.

Example:
vi3_san_guide.pdf

says:

max luns iscsi = 254

online library says:

max luns iscsi = 256

Another:

vi3_san_guide.pdf

max iscsi targets = 64

vi3_iscsi_cfg.pdf

max iscsi targets = 8

Does anyone else noticed these things?

Presentation on VMware (At Work)

Hey Guys,

I was wondering was there any presentation documentation out there explaining what VMware is in a very simplistic wording? People at my site want me to give a presentation on VMware, just so that people will have some sort of idea what it is. I have been doodling with VMware for about 3 weeks now and have a general concept about it, just would feel comfortable if there was easier to read documentation that I could reference from. Plus my power point skills are kind of slim, I would like to present VMware in a kick ass fashion, because lets face it this is am awesome product.

Synch'ing between VM Images?

I was wondering if anyone knew how to synch two images. Ideally, I'd like one image on my VMWare server that I could "check out" locally to a Desktop or Laptop and use via Player. Then when I'm done, "check it in".

I'm thinking that there should be a way to leverage MS's system restore function. Something like,
1. First "check out" would create a System restore and copy image to desktop.
2. work from home for a couple days with Desktop-Image.
3. Back to the office, "check in" would create system restore on Desktop-image and transfer information to Server-image, and update Server-image.
4. Check out, would create system restore on Server-image and transfer information to Desktop-image, and update Desktop-image
5. And so on and so on... so that subsequent check out/in's would be a passing back and forth of system restores.

Or find a product that provides this functionality.

Creating SIDs using the built in option

I've been trying to clone a win2003 vm and when I get to the part where it asks if I want to configure the new vm, if I choose this and go through the full config, I get an error at the very end when it's done. I can't paste the print sceen shot I took so here's the error
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Failed to customized guest OS: Cannot open disk file: ERROR: Disk library failed(NBD_ERR_NETWORK_CONNECT). Unable to open 'authd:///vmfs/DISK-F/Clone of Seela234 - to seela249 J.vmdk@seelplx2.XXX.XXX.com:902'. Failed to configure disk scsi0:0.."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So ther it is. If i choose to by pass the config then it clones just fine but I then have the hassle of correcting the SID issue. With choosing the config option it does the "new SID" right then and there.
The xxx.xxx.xom is company vlan info and not needed to analize the error.

VMware Capacity Planner - Issue running consolidation Scenario ?!

Hey all,

I'm using the latest capacity planner to run a fairly large consolidation scenario for one of our customers.
As done before I use the SYSTEM GROUPS to create USER DEFINED groups where I import the serverlist from a TXT file, containing only the servers I want to consolidate.

Now if I try to run a consolidation scenario, I choose a default or a new, none of the user-defined groups can be selected, nor does the list of servers appear. The User defined groups are part of the domain, but aparently you cannot choose domain type groups anymore...
THIS USED TO WORK in the previous version... Any idea what I'm doing wrong here???

Please help,
Thanks ! Jessica

VMs to simulate Cisco IOS and Juniper ScreenOS

Wishfull thinking here, and maybe a product suggestion, for some wiley entrepeneur. I am about to wire up a lab with multiple Cisco routers, switches, and some Juniper/NetScreen firewalls for testing. It would be great to simulate all of this in VMware, instead of having to fire-up a dozen or so boxes and cable everything together.

So, who's going to step up to the plate and negotiate licensing deals with Cisco and Juniper, so that we can run IOS and ScreenOS in a VM?
How does it work? Does it make virtual drive to do the Linux stuff on? if so how does it communicate with NTFS? hmm I am thinking about installing this on a work computer however I don't really want to mess with drive partition and stuff to much.

And once installed all the linux stuff will be saved in C:/OS/ correct?

Also I don't really need it to connect to the internet as I don't want to upset our big brother. If it does try to connect to the internet it will go through my current windows IP right? no try and setup its own guest IP or something

USB License Key Question

Hi everyone,

My company currently has 2 servers which we were looking to virtualize because their utilization is so low that they are basically a waste of resources. These servers are for our phone system, and the problem that I'm facing is that they have usb keys which contain the licensing info.

When I asked one of their "techs" about potentially virtualizing the servers, he glazed over and didn't know what I was talking about.

Any ideas?

VMWare Converter Dual Core Issue

Just grabbed the new VMWare Converter, and found what may be a slight issue. It seems that you can import a physical workstation, but upon playback in VMWare Player, it errors out saying that I have two virtual processors when only one is allowed.

I'm assuming that is due to the fact that it is a dual core laptop, but this seems odd given the amount of dc laptops and desktops that are out there.

I'm looking to run this as a ghosting alternative for our users who get new machines, but want to retain data from their old ones. Converter is perfect for that, since it's free version does what we need, without expensive licensing for Ghost, et al.

I am running this as an Import to a local directory on the hard drive of the same machine being converted. Converter lets you do it, but again, it won't run in player.

Thanks in advance for the help!
Virtual disk arrays using RAM drives?

Anyone seen, or know of, or have ideas on this idea:

Create a "farm of RAM", let's say a terabyte. Then install the vmdk's in the "farm", that would emiminate the physical slowness/crash potential of hard drives.

With the proper power management solution in place such that an outage would almost be impossible, are there any drawbacks to this?

Does anyone know of any testbeds out there trying this?
Hi all,

Can I do the above with any of VMware's products?
My company hosts a disaster recovery centre and we currently use Ghost images of our customers servers etc...
We are now wondering if we could make virtual machines of our customers servers and store them instead of ghost images.

Then if ever disaster occurred, the virtual machine images would be 'expanded' onto physical machines for the customers to use...

Would this be possible?

Thanks in advance
What is everyone using to burn-in their new hardware?

I've tried using Memtest86 but it does not work with our new IBM x3650 servers.
Can anyone tell me what this doing and why? I have another Capacity Planner running scans on a different subnet and it's not acting the same. This particular one does not have anything schedule to run yet. I just got it up and running. Any ideas/input would greatly be appreciated.
Is Esx Case Sensitive?

Today I shut down a VM to make a clone and once this was complete and the VM back on-line I noticed that the nics and hard disks were configured incorrectly.

Upon investigating I noticed that in the /vmfs/volume/LUN/Server1 directory there were two sets of files. One set started with Server1.xxxx and the ohter was server1.xxxx.

While I haven't narrowed it down entirly, it would appear that upon startup, Server1 took the wrong vmx file (server1.vmx) the correct C drive (Server1.vmdk) and the wrong D drive (server1_1.vmdk).

I guess what I'm trying to get at is why were there two sets of files in the Server1 directory? The only thing that makes sense to me is that Esx is not case sensitive and that while Linux can distinguish between Server1 and server1, Esx cannot. IF this is the case, it would make snese to say that one of the other admin's created a VM labeled server1 and the files were placed in the Server1 directory.

On the other hand, assuming that I am wrong (wouldn't be the first time) and that Esx is case sensitive, where in the world, pun intended, did this second set of files come from and why are they in the wrong location?

esx and loadtesting or performance tools

Is it possible to run applications like the Mercury suite of testing tools(QTP,Loaderunner,Winrunner) or Network performance tools like Compuware or sniffer inside a VM enivorment prefebably ESX?
We have an ESX 2.5.3 setup, running AD and using it as a test bed for all Active directory global testing efforts. This is encaspulated within or test lab and on an isolated network. Our thoughts are we can consolidate our test datacenter to ESX but will it skew our performance reports?

I'm curious about the capabilities of Vmware's Distributed Resource Scheduler. It sounds like it can modify resource allocations in order to balance load, does it automatically adjust memory shares too, or just cpu? How about network bandwidth?

Has anyone had any experience using it? I know a lot of people are intimidated in letting a machine automate some of these tasks, but it seems like a pretty nice piece of software.
Advice on server purchase

Hi Guys

I'm looking to purchase a server to run ESX for my home office - I would be running 10 VM's at the most - mostly AD W2K3, Exchange, Citrix etc for only 3 people !

I know there is a hardware list of servers that ESX will install on OK

Can someone give me some advice on what would be a cheap suitable server to use

e.g. Would a HP DL360 or 380 be suitable for this sort of very small implementation?

Can someone give me the link to the server compatiblity list for installing ESX on please

Cheers

I was recently looking for a wiki about Vmware and found none... so I created one!
It's free, based on WikiMedia engine

http://mrfrank.ca/wiki2

I am considering buying it's own FQDN name... any suggestions...

for now it's empty, up to you to fill it!
Network driver for a custom 2.6.19.2 kernel.

Hi, I just complete a custom 2.6.19.2 kernel compile on a virtual machine. I can't get the virtual network interface (AMD Lance Am79C970A) working on this new kernel cause there is no built-in driver in the kernel and VMwareTools seems to be working only on generic stock kernel ;-(

Any suggestion to get it working?

Thanks a lot.
Is VMware's virtual hardware layer going to be on Microsoft's HCL?

Hi,
To satisfy some senior management, I'd like to know if VMWare are intending to get its virtual hardware layer certified for Microsoft's HCL? I understand that if you have premier support MS will look at issues as well, this has put most fears to rest, although having the virtual hardware on the MS HCL would be an excellent thing to point to.

Looking on the HCL site, only Worstation 4.5 and 5.0 have the "Designed for Windows" certification and only XP and Windows 2000 are certified.

For those certifications, was the software itself certified for running ON windows, or was it the virtual hardware layer that was certified for running windows on top of it?

Secondly, are VMware going to get the ESX 3.0.1+ virtual hardware certified to run Win server 2003+ ?

If it was certified, it would put the topic of official support to an end. As I think getting the virtual hardware layer certified is a critical step for VMware considering all physical hardware vendors do this.

Cheers

VMWare Guests "Panic" and shutdown

So i have a 4 server ESX 3.01 35804 environment with a central server. Friday I had all guests on one server shutdown. Then 3 hours later 2 other servers had all of there guests shutdown. Total of 45 guest shutdown with no explination in the logs. I have a call into support (on Friday marked CRITICAL, but they have not bothered with me yet). The horrible support is a different issue.

Has anyone else had all the guests on a vm shutdown?

Given that daylight savings time will fall on March 11th this year, does anyone konw how this will effect VMware Esx hosts?

What about guests that are syncing their time with the host server?

I'm assuming that if the Esx host is syncing with a reputible time source, there should nothing to worry about.

Hello,

I use several linux on intel32. I would like to change my architecture to VMware and host few of them on it.

One of the linux use HIGHMEM_64 option in the kernel which allow the system to use more ram than the 32bit limit. The used ram on this computer is frequently more than 8 Go.

Will I be able to host this machine under VMware ? Somebody told me there is a limit for 32 bit architecture on VMware and we cannot allocate more than 3.6 Go to a virtual host.

Is it true ?

Hiya,

I'm brand new to the forum and need some information.

I'm a small business consultant through the MS Partner program and for that I get the MS Action Pack which is loaded with a gamut of fully licensed MS software for £200 a year, an invaluable resource for me offering services to small companies. I have recently been asked about VMWare products by a few customers and I was wondering if there is a similar offering from VMWare.
Auto running virtual appliance

I'd like to create a virtual appliance on a USB drive that runs automatically when the drive is plugged into a PC. These are the steps I'd like done:

1) User plugs the drive into a PC
2) User prompted by the Windows autorun dialog; user elects to start the virtual machine
3) The VMWare Player is automatically installed from the USB drive if it is not already on the PC
4) The image is run from the USB drive

I guess what I'm after is a self-extracting executable that installs the VMWare Player and then runs an image. Is such a thing possible?

Our organization is going to VMWARE in next couple o f month. We need find out how to configure our Symantra UPS system. We have installed this product incase of power failure it will signal the servers so it gracefully shut itself down. Symantra talks to each server throught network. Each server has Powerchute network shutdown software installed. In a Vm envirement how will that work? I have emailed Powerchute and they could not help me. Is there any documentation available where I could find out some information about it? I will appreciate any help.
Hello Folks!

I have IBM x445 server with 4 x 3.0 Gz Intel Xeon proccessors and IBM x3650 with 2 x dual core 3.0 Gz Intel Xeon proccessors.
They both connected to a SAN and will share the same VMFS partitions.
I have Virtual Center but VMOTION is not a requirement.
I have 20 virtual machines created only on x445 server, can those virtual machines still run under x3650 server? If I create a virtual machine under x3650 server , can this machine run on x445 server?
If somebody has an experience with different host hardware, please help!

Thanks
Cloning / Copying VM's with Multiple Virtual Nic's?

When cloning or copying VM's that have multiple virtual nic's from one host to another, I've noticed that one virtual usually disappears from the settings of the VM and that the remaining virtual nic will always end up on the wrong subnet.

Also, I've noticed that this doesn't always happen with the clone. Sometimes it is the original VM that will loose it's settings.

Has anyone else noticed anything like this?
Asking for permission to use a pirated ESX

I am sure this has never been asked before - so I didn't use the search function

Some background first ...

I am a hobbyist and homeuser of VMware since late Workstation 2.
In the last years I somehow specialized in vmx-troubleshooting and snapshot-problems.
Since 3 and a half year I spent several hours a day in helping users with this kind of problems -
here - and in the german VMware-forum.

I guess I do a pretty good job in both types of problems.
Just ask Kevin - he can surely confirm that

Examples :
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=67753&tstart=0
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=66751&tstart=150

Well - I only have a Workstation-licence so my experience with ESX is quite limited.
Now I was able to buy a second hand server for 100 bucks. Pentium 3, 650MHz, 512 MB RAM, 2x 18Gb SCSI-disks.
ready to crawl ESX

As I really enjoy this Sherlock Holmes work with troubleshooting other guys problems I thought about buying a VMTN subscription to dig a little into ESX. I started saving money for the subscription and may be able to buy it sometime later this summer ...
Now as the VMTN-subscription was silently dropped I thought about useing a pirated version.
Then I thought - Ulli - you must be stupid! You want to do something criminal just to help a rich company in doing their support ?!

Now to come back to my question:
I ask for permission to use a pirated ESX 3 to improve my support skills.

Just for the record - I really don't need an ESX - I do not need VMware at all.
It is just for my fun and it may eventually improve the quality of the support here and in the german forum.

If nothing comes out of this post - it really doesn't matter much to me.
It would surely calm down my enthusiasm for this highly addictive piece of software and hanging around in this forum a little bit ...
Please at least read it as a complaint about the silent drop of the VMTN-subscription.

I am sure that a lot of guys who really need to get hands-on practice with ESX will be forced to use pirated versions without being able to simply ask for permission like I do now.

ESX 3.0 Pocket Quick Start Guide? Need some feedback on things... (RapidApp

Well guys, the demand for this is a lot bigger than our first estimates. So, we need some feedback.

When we put a price on the book for Vmworld it was basically a place holder since we didnt even know if we would put it out for general distribution.

With the demand generated by that we have started reviewing the best distribution methods for this pocket admin guide
see images here:
http://www.rapidapp.com/front_cover.jpg
http://www.rapidapp.com/back_cover.jpg

Anyway, publishing and distribution of books is really in the dark ages. So even if we listed a book at like 19.99, Amazon sells it at like 14.99 but only wants to pay 1/2 that... So in response to this quote from another post

"And I'd pay 20 if you could move it a bit faster. "

would a $19.99 retail really be ok? even at that there isnt really any money being made but in order to get it through distribution and what not would that price work?

Also what if you could get it only electronically? would that be ok?

Anyway, any feedback on this would be appreciated, and will help us get it out there faster.

Thanks
Microsoft licensing for softgrid (MAD)

MS have decided to change their licensing policy for softgrid so that only companies with Software Asurance on their client OS can buy it. this is a big impact.

U can still buy it as a stand alone product till june but they will not offer any maintenace on it after this date.

sound like they have gone mad, was looking at softgrid as a great solution but doubt i can get management to change our whole license model and go to SA.
Supported HBA indicating unsupported HBA

I have an IBM3650 with QLA2460, running ESX 3.0.1 however the HBA is identified as QLA2422 under Storage Adapters, and according to the HCL this is an unsupported adapter, even though it is using the VMware QLA driver.

As this information would be included in the files sent to VMware for support, could this affect the support I get.

VMware Enterprise support is a "joke"?

HI

We have just recently joined VMware community with our purchase in VI Enterprise + gold support maintenance. I personally must admit that the level of service we have received is so much compareable with other vendor that we also deal with on a day to day basis. Not to list all, some of the vendors we deal with are Netapp, SUN, Veritas.

If I was to give a rate with the overall support mark, I personally would give Netapp, Veritas & SUN == 8 to 9 / 10 and I would give VMware 4.

maybe I had a bigger expectation from the support community? maybe!

I welcome any comments and flames.

Cheers

Could You help a rookie under ESX server

Hi everyone.

As I say in the subject: I need your help to stay alive.
I
n December 2006, I had a Basic and Advanced training in “Vmware Virtual Infrastructure 3” (4 days). But the trainer wasn’t good (some of the guys did not continue the course).

And now I had to put 20 Windows servers of homologation and development under ESX Server 3.1.

I have 2 ESX servers with SAN Disk and I have a problem.
When I create a VM (i.e. SR2400) I can see 2 directories under the SAN disk:
/vmfs/volumes/458ac3af-0c5f7fdc-4e6b-000bcd6b72a8/SR2400
files :
SR2400-flat.vmdk
SR2400.vmdk
/vmfs/volumes/458ac3af-0c5f7fdc-4e6b-000bcd6b72a8/SR2400_1
files:
vmware.log
SR2400.vmxf
SR2400.vmx
SR2400.nvram
SR2400-2c08abbd.vswp
SR2400.vmsd

But there is some VM created by my chief (in hollyday) end they are stored in only one directory… So I think there is a problem in the way I convert my servers.

I first create a ghost on a vmsf attached to a VM (SR2200). Then I unghost

on another vmfs attached to the same VM and I use P2V.

Then I detach the Vmfs and I perform on one of the ESX theses actions:
Mkdir SR2400

Under /vmfs/volumes/458ac3af-0c5f7fdc-4e6b-000bcd6b72a8/SR2200 I type “vmkfstools –i SR2200_3 ../SR2400/SR2400.vmdk”

After the end, under “VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client 2.0” I create a VM in custom mode and use an existing vmfs “/vmfs/volumes/458ac3af-0c5f7fdc-4e6b-000bcd6b72a8/SR2400/SR2400.vmdk”

I start the VM and then I install the VMWare Tools.

What can I do to have only one directory by VM.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for my low level of English (my Taylor is rich).

Hi ,

I would like to know if VMWARE allows support for guest VM to interact with each other using memory mapped I/O or any other memory sharing mechanism.

Let me know,

/dev/rtc: Device or resource busy

Dear all,

I am running Suse 10.1 host with XP guest

uname -a
Linux pc-csm21 2.6.16.21-0.25-default #1 Tue Sep 19 07:26:15 UTC 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

vmware is saying /dev/rtc/ is not accessable.

cat /dev/rtc as root says device or resource busy.

hwclock says

hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=16: Device or resource busy.

the kernel doesnt seem to have rtc driver and its builtin with something.

find /lib/modules/ -name *rtc*
/lib/modules/2.6.16.21-0.25-default/kernel/sound/core/snd-rtctimer.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.16.21-0.25-default/kernel/drivers/i2c/chips/rtc8564.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.16.21-0.25-default/kernel/drivers/video/matrox/matroxfb_crtc2.ko

vmware is very slow, is it anything to do with not able to access /dev/rtc/

How do i find out which processes are using /dev/rtc/ ? Can I make any configuration in vmware to resolve this?

Many thanks
Do I get free upgrade to VM Workstation 6 if I buy Workstation 5 now?

I finally convinced my boss to purchase a few licenses of VM Workstation. The only thing that is left hanging is when to buy them. I know the Workstation 6 is coming out soon. Should I wait or buy Workstation 5 now? I will have much harder time to get the money if I have to pay it again for upgrade.

Thanks
Considering VMWare, what's my risk ?

I see a lot of pdf's relating costs savings, enumerating ease of management, ease of backup and so on. I have yet to find a document relating the "dangers" of implementing VMWare.

I am currently talking to a "would-be" service provider but he cannot answer simple questions :
what's my risk ?
Has anyone experienced critical problems with VMWare (it being the cause of) ?

I am a bit reluctant to pomp in 100 K for a solution without knowing the risks involved. Can anyone from VMWare or experienced with VMWare implementations answer ?

ESX support staff question

I am in the process of working on policies and procedures for a larger scale VMware deployment and I am looking for some information on the support staff to VI3 host ratio others are seeing. I am having to draft some staffing models as well as outlining training needs for the current staff.

Currently the environment is 15 VI3 host but will be growing very rapidly.

Also, If others have a support models for a large scale deployment I would be interested in hearing about that. What we are looking at is a core team of staff to administer the VI3 host. The support of the VMs would fall to the current server support staff.

Thanks in advance,
Assign mulitple physical graphics cards to individual VM's?

Is it possible to assign separate physical graphics cards to individual Virtual Machines? i.e. if you had 5 physical graphics cards in a server and 5 virtual machines on that server could you tie each graphics card to its own Virtual Machine?

Reason for asking is that we have an AV presentation that requires 5 physical machines running at the same time to display it hence was looking at the idea of virtualising the 5 physical machines into one server with 5 physical graphic card outputs but imagine this is only possible if graphics cards can be assigned to individual virtual machines?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!
