UK London VMware User Group Meeting, Tuesday 24th November 2009 - PLEASE DON'T REPLY TO THIS THREAD

Dear All,

Something of a packed email this time around, so please bear with me.

1) Firstly, our next session will be on Tuesday 24th November, and is going to focus fairly heavily on vSphere. If any of you would like to present on a vSphere-related topic with which you have good, recent experience, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. This could be any of installation, upgrade (hosts, VC, VMs), networking, storage, design changes, operations changes, backup, DR, third party tools, and so on. There are some fantastic giveaways that are available to anyone who presents a session, so please do get in touch. This is a *user*group, after all

2) Secondly, please note that after this event, invitation emails will be arriving from londonvmug at yahoo dot com. Confirmation emails from yourselves will need to be sent to that address from then on (although not for this meeting). If you need to have the new address added to a whitelist at work, please do so as soon as possible.

3) Thirdly, and finally, the bit you've been waiting for, the event details:

hallo folk!

i am new in Virtual Machines sphere, and need help in writing functional design of my project. Project is - to write a web-inrweface in internet system, where users could create/make configurations, modification their own virtual machines. application must use esx server and vmlogix lab manager.

i myself must decide what functions will it have. here are some i have thought of:

user must have username and password to login.

-user must be able to make changes with his/her account.
-one user can only create max. 10 virtual machines from all the templates, which application contains.

user can not download any other softwares or programs, or change any OS.

user can start/stopr his/her VM

user can view status of his/her VM (running/stopped)

-...

please, if there is anybody, who is spesialized in these sphere, help to list any other functions...

apprreciate your help in advance,
Hi,

What i'm looking for is a vmware product like esx that i can run on a stand alone pc, i want to do this so i can have multiple machines running on a remote laptop/pc without having to load windows twice (once on the main machine and then again on the vm machine)

I've had a little look round but i couldn't see anything!

Also i tried installing esxi on a pc and got these to failed messages.

Failed to load tpm

Failed to load lvmdriver

I wasnt installing this on a real server could this be the problem?

Cheers for any help that can be offerd!!!

Windows Activation cannot start - so cannot activate - and cannot install VMWare Tools.

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help with this one. I have cloned a laptop, and now it requires windows XP Home activation ( of course ) but the activation wizard hangs - it gets the window open and freezes.
I cannot install VMWare tools in safe mode, so if the activation window is hanging because of this, I am nuked.

I take it I couldn't install VMWare tools before I cloned the machine ? Is that a complete newbie question or what.

I would really appreciate any thoughts.

It was a dell inspiron 6200 laptop with XP home. The resultant image is running on workstation 6 on a vista machine.

Thanks
What is the difference between the snapshots?
Hi All,

Maybe you can advise: if snapshots are not recommended in production, what is the differense between mannually taken snapshots and those ones taken by VCB? The statement from VCB administration guide "Consolidated Backup flushes the transient writes in the guest operating system and suspends any further writes for a few seconds in order to create a crash-consistent virtual machine image" tells me nothing. How does VCB ensure consistent backup? Is the same technology in use when i create snapshot manually? Can backup consistency be guaranteed without VMware tools installed on the VM i want to backup with VCB?

Thanks,
Whitebox / network card issue
I've been reading a lot about whiteboxes and having a test esx3.5/i environment. I managed to get 3.5 installed onto an old compaq D530 USDT unit (great little machine even if it does run hot).

The trouble I'm having is that the throughput on the network interface is really quite crap, the box only has one expansion card slot - PCI which can only take a card 5.8 inches long. I was wondering if any one knew of any dual port PCI cards that are known to work with esx that are also short - or failing that, anyone have any ingenious ideas

Many thanks

Who would like to attend a powershell for newbs by Alan

Hello all, I thought Alaric's idea of running some early sessions concentrating on specific topics a great idea. To follow up on it I asked Alan Renouf how keen he would be to run a Powershell class for Newbs.

To my great relief he thinks it is a great idea and one he has mentioned himself.

I am new to Powershell but love it to bits, my big prob is it is bleedin easy to rely on top blokes like Al and LucD who provide time and effort helping write the scripts for Newbs like me who are struggling to write them. As I have taken advantage of these guy's amongst others relentlessly I now need to show a bit of commitment to learning to do it myself. Al is offering to help run a bit of class to show us the way to go.

Please add to this thread if you would be interested in attending to ensure he has a good audience. Also it will show there is enough interest and Alaric I am sure will kindly arrange for it to happen.

Alaric if you need any additional help let me know.

Cheers
Auto-starting a Vm at a given time
Hey everyone,

This is my first post, so please bear with me. I hope this is an ok topic in this area.

I have setup vmware ESXi and started installing my VM's

I am looking to auto start a vm at midnight. The server can autorun a script and shutdown automatically. But I can't seem to work out how (or if it's possible) to auto start at a predefined time.

Any help would be really appreciated

Virtualization advice for Website testing

just a quick inquiry about some Virtualisation products. I'm after a solution for my Web development team to test websites and thought i'd check in with you.

Scenario: Team of Web developers who need to test websites in multiple browsers on cross platforms - Various flavours of XP// Vista possibly Ubuntu Linux

Solution: Machine dedicated to remote log-in with various OS/ images users can access. simultaneous user log-ins // or simply the ability to run guest machines in a multi-processor environment

Closest product comparison is microsoft virtual server except i have no need to run any any server software and need the ability for the web developers to log on remotely and use the resources //

Any suggestions // direction would be much appreciated!

< thank you />

Next User Group request
Thought it's about time I placed something on here after attending the last two events.

Although ESX3.5 U2 and the illusive time bomb added some entertainment there were many serious questions asked which brings me onto a comment made by Alaric "If you don't' tell us what you want we can't help" or words to that effect.

Well as converted on the principles of VI toolkit I was wondering if it would be possible to provide a script center where members could contribute their scripts from basic to advanced, hoping Steve Bruck kindly adds the ones he presented at the last event.

I'm personally interested in the means of creating a health check script containing some of the following:

(*Export a host list with any in a status of offline, containing hlogs, snapshots, ntp time status including permit root logon status. Export a VM List per host, with any VMs showing an alert status of red or listed as unregistered with VMTools status as oldTools.)*

Other areas to delve into are performance stats on CPU/Mem including LUN capacity with thresholds and exporting this to .csv or google chart. To keep up with security policies how to change bulk root passwords.

For the next event possibly someone with VMark experience could give an overview on problems found/overcome as many consolidations now require monitoring and performance suitability evidence before being considered for entry into a virtual environment.

Let's hope I've not pushed the boat out but got the ball rolling, I'm sure many of us could add or come up with loads more...

Patching ESXi 3.5 U3 Installable with HP Management Components
I've installed

"ESXi 3.5 U3 Installable with HP Management Components" - Build 123629 (3.50 Upd3 17Nov2008) on a couple of HP Proliant DL380 G5.

Basically this is a "parallel" download available at the esxi downloads page (HP_Installer_Image-123629.iso),
that includes esxi/snmp components that allow "HP Insight Manager Agents"
from inside Virtual Machines, transparently access hardware status (via snmp).

The esxi had a couple of Patches and is now at the Build 143129.
For patching purposes can I use the esxi Standard Patches ?

ESXe350-200811401-O-SG - PATCH >>> Build 130755 (02.Dec.2008)
ESXe350-200901401-O-SG - PATCH >>> Build 143129 (30.Jan.2009)

I've tested, and patches do install OK through "VMware Infrastructure Update" (VIC Component),
but I need to be sure before going into production.

Any help welcomed,
SCSI passthru question

Hi,

Just want to check if people have seen this before. I have a supported scsi card in one of my host that has a vm on of BackupExec 12.5.

Now the issue was that this at the time was not my main backup server as moving from physical to virtual and setup the VM server with the scsi device connected and then shut down the server once happy and connected the scsi device back to the physical server.

When the vm was powered backup it hangs there at the vm BIOS screen for a very long time and does the same on the Windows splash screen. After some thought I checked the host and it was still holding ghost scsi device in storage in VC. Once I did a rescan and the scsi device's went and the VM powered up fine.

Once I attached the scsi device's back to the host and did a rescan the VM powered up fine again.

Has anyone else seen this or is this just an issue with my setup?

Vendor representation from EMC in the VMware space for the UK and Ireland
Hi

My name is Alex Tanner and I am the aligned EMC Technology Consultant for VMware related matters in the UK and Ireland

My role is to provide technical continuity between VMware and EMC when discussing EMC and VMware solutions with customers and partners

I tend to post more in the SRM sections but would welcome an opportunity to offer a view and respond to questions on any storage / managment / replication or backup questions on these UK boards, as these types of topics are where EMC has a broad portfolio of VMware integrated solutions

I would also like to offer a link to the blog of my boss Chad Sakac who posts regularly on a wide range of VMware related issues - not just product and solution pitches I assure you but useful practical hints and explanations for VMware topics such as HA and networking

http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/

A recent topic of interest here might be A "Multivendor Post" to help our mutual iSCSI customers using VMware"

http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2009/01/a-multivendor-post-to-help-our-mutual-iscsi-customers-using-vmware.html

For those of you interested in working with Site Recovery Manager but who lack the storage to do so - a how to document and details to download the EMC Celerra simulator can be found here

http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2008/12/site-recovery-manager-in-a-can---celerra-virtual-appliance-howto-401.html

Many thanks
Next VMUG Meeting - London?
Hi UK London Area User Group.

I am new to the VMUG and was wondering when the next London VMUG meeting possibly could be? What's the possible content and how the meetings work? I have been listening to the round table podcasts, and they speak about the VMUGs often.

Any details would be great?

# sign instead of pound sign in vmware fusion using windows xp professional

Hi to anyone reading this! Can you tell me why the VM doesn't recognise the pound sign? When I press the shift + 3, I get the # sign (in internet explorer). Also, in Quickbooks it shows the $ sign rather than a pound sign, even though UK is the company address. Even more confusing, in the VMware help search box I can type the pound sign!! It works ok in Mac applications too. I'm very new to VMware Fusion and Macs, so please be gentle with me!!!

Can anybody help me out...As my username suggests I am new to macs, Fusion and to Vista.
I have successfully loaded Fusion onto my iMac along with Vista Home Premium, but now I need to instal a Windows only application onto the machine using the Vista O/S. I will need to be able to copy and paste between the mac and the virtual machine.
Can anybody tell me how 1. I load the windows only application? and 2. How do I configure the two O/S's to enable copy and paste between the two?

Thanks for your help

hello fellow users, my name is chris and I would appreciate some help and assistance. (please) I have installed VMware Workstation so far so good. What I would like to know is this. When I come to install a Linux o/s from either a full installation disc or a live cd, I am scared that when it comes to actually installing the o/s does it really install to my internal hard drive on my laptop or to a "virtual" hard drive? This is probably the most ridiculous question ever asked, but I am a real beginner in this Virtual world. I have MEDION AKOYA laptop, 3 gig ram 250 gig hard drive. Present o/s vista home premium, which I am not keen on. Any help, advice or assistance greatly appreciated. Thank you.

CPU Cores vs. Virtual Processors?
Hi,

I am new to VMware ESXi, and would like to know what the relation between CPU cores and Virtual Processors is?

I have a Dual Quad Xeon server - essentially 8 cores. ESXi recognises both quads and all 8 cores, but I am only able to assign 1, 2 or 4 virtual processors to a SLES 10-64bit VM?

Sould I not be able to assign 8 virtual processors (assuming 1 CPU core = 1 Virtual processor) to the VM?

Any help much apprecited.
Powershell Script at last VMUG
My memory is like a sieve, I believe Steve covered a powershell script which he enabled him to pull of the config of one ESX server then have it forced onto a new one to make sure they where the same. Is there a generally available script that does the same thing. Or if you read this Steve any chance i can get a copy so I can whole heartedly plagiarise it to my hearts content. I promise to buy you a beer or 2. Right now I aint got the skill to write the script myself

Cheers
sharing files between OS and virtual OS
hey

I'm running Vmware Server and Vmware Server Console (1.04) on my machine (winxp). I have 5 virtual machines
running on this computer. I'm trying to share som files on one of these virtual machines with the main OS on the machine. I'm not sure how I can share a file (it's just a text file) so it becomes available from the main machine computer's OS

any suggestions?

ESX Server Shows Unlicensed... After providing Host Based License

Hi All,

I am stuck up in the middle for my client on production environment.

I have generated a 4 x 2CPU Licenses as host based license and the server is running as standalone.

When i provide the license, it shows as registered, but when i Click on Edit to change from Unlicensed to ESX Standard, it provides me that VCB license will be disabled. Though, the page shows me as Unlicensed.

I have tried in my another test server and it works fine. My client is having a 2 CPU's.

I appreciate if someone can help me resolve this issue. Attaching snapshot

Any command or do i need to delete any file to get the new license file to work.

Regards,
Exchange server 2003 moving the vm session

Ok first off no expert at VM's or AD/Exchange but I have been dumped in the driver seat.

Moving from GSX 3.2.1 build 1928 (i know!) to the latest version of Vmware Server, do I need to run Vmware convertor? I don't beleive so.

Ok need to move 4x vm sessions to another host. This means new ips, anyhow here is the layout.
AD/Exchange Server DNS/WINS (Server 2003 Exchange 2003 same box)
3x mailstore vms
Server WebServer
2x xp workstations

Ok once i get these boys to a new location I'm going to be using Vmware server (politics lack of cash at this time, been through why we should use payed versions it's not going to happen)
Once I have the VM's installed using the same format they came from (drive partitions etc) what should i expect when changin ips within VM and Windows OS systems.
Default gateway and DNs will need to change will AD/Exchange have any issues with this? I'm pretty sure AD will be ok but I'm not sure how exchange will handle the change of IP (even though its held on the domain controller)

Any other issues i should be aware of when moving.

Thanks

Regards

Site visit / Recommendations required
I work for a central Government office in London. We are looking to implement VMWare ESX servers for both our development and production environments. I am currently stuck trying to obtain a site visit or reference site. I have received a number of promises from a number of sources that they can get me a site visit, however none have so far been forthcoming.

I therefore wondered if there were any VMWare corporate users that would be happy to have a quick chat about their experiences using the software and the pitfalls they have encountered. So far I have read all of the blurb and spoken with numerous consultants/ sales staff, however I am very keen to speak with someone with real life experience of the product before signing on the dotted line.

As a quick background, we are looking to virtualise approximately 75 of around 100 servers. We have 1,000 users and are keen to virtualise a number of Oracle environments.

Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Has anyone got any scare stories/good news stories they'd like to share?
Any products you'd recommend I consider?
Thanks
connect blade cd-rom to a vm
Hi there,

a very simply question:

i need to boot a vm (debian) from the physical blade cdrom but i don't remember how can do that in the right manner.....

My platform in ESX server 3.01

Actually the cd-rom media tray is linked to the right blade and the cdrom media is bootable....but in the several attempts (by editing the cd-rom vm settings) the vm boots from disk.

Anybody knows something about it?

thanks in advance

How to register custom application with VC for use in customization specs?
Hi All,

I have created a customization spec to be used with me templates. One of the options under Computer Name is to choose an application to generate a computer name for you. I am just wondering what you have to define here, I have tried a path but that fails.

Any ideas??
vmware consultants - worth their salt?

Hi All

being reasonably new to vmware I could do with some pointers. The company I work for is currently using ESX Server 3.0.0/1 (4 off) and GSX Server (1 of) in the UK and a number of others overseas. As it stands they have been using different consultants, from the same company, to install and configure these servers. Net result is a mish mash of configurations and a serious lack of faith in the supplier.

All things considered the business is looking to peruse another supplier for initial configurations and support until we can add the skill set to our team (either through training, experience or recruitment). This leads me nicely onto the question.

Can anyone out there recommend a vmware partner that can offer effective implementation and support on vmware?

In a perfect world the same supplier would also be very well versed in HP and also NetApp as the Host is on HP and the VMs on a NetApp filer.

Personally I would love to be able to learn more about vmware myself and am keen to get some more exposure to it but in the interim could really do with some advice on this.

Cheers

VMworld 2007 - presentations run through

Any of the members on here presenting @ VMworld 2007?

I will be doing weekly run throughs of my presentation and would like to test run it with people outside of VMware, and give them the opportunity to test on me too.

I could host it at our Frimley HQ, or possibly @ EMC in the city.

If there are a few of us we could make a day of it.

Anything to help being successful on the day!

Just a thought...
Seminar around Active Directory for ESX Server

Hi,

Please note we are users AND suppliers

We just ran an event in London about Active Directory for Unix, Linux, MACs and ESX Servers.

The event was hosted by the HP User Group and the feedback was very good indeed.

One of the attendees is also a VMware User Group Member (hello John) and suggested that it could be of interest to the aforementioned group?

Check the slides and let us know? http://www.linuxit.com/mail/HPUG_followup.htm

Many Thanks,
VMware-tools running on the host?

I have a quick question on vmware-tools. I'm running a linux guest (debian etch) in a windows xp host and have installed vmware-tools on the guest os. Everything is fine as far as graphics acceleration (my main concern here). Now I would like to stop running the X server on the guest OS and run an X server on the host (Xorg or Exceed) and set the DISPLAY environment variable in the linux guest to direct graphical output to the host desktop.

How can I achieve the same acceleration of the graphical output in this configuration? Do I need to run a (windows) compatible version of vmware-tools on the host OS in order for this to work?

Hello everybody,
I installed VMWare server on a 64 bit UbuntuDapper LTS server.
On a remote PC I installed the Virtual Console.
Is it possible to install an OS on a Virtual Machine created on the server without introducing a bootable CD on the server?
It would be great if I could simply use an Ubuntu CD on the remote PC with the virtual console without having to go to the server farm...

VCP self study?

Hello,

Currently I don't work with ESX but have in the past.
I dabble with VMware Server both at work (unofficially as its use is discouraged for reasons of intense ignorance) and home.

I am interested in whether it's possible to do a part-time VCP course?
Pehaps self study?

Its partly a cost issue and partly a time off work issue (which compounds the cost if the time is not taken as a holiday of course).

The reason for doing it are sheer interest and it might help if I were to change job...

Any constructive advice welcome.
but on second throughts it may be better to put here.

Put simply I work in London, and I have applied to have my job shared on a 50-50 basis (2.5 days a week). Although my employer has put it on our website, and an ad in Computer Weekly, I would like to put the link to the job somewhere that VMWare bods might see it.

Any ideas ?

Regards

Browser Appliance Internet Connection.

I am new to virtualization. Have tried many vm tricks but have not been lucky so far. Browser appliance however seems to come close to what I want, and that is to go on the internet securely.

I am running browser appliance on winXP. The Ubuntu based virtual machine starts up. This is how far I have got. The included PDF doesn't explain how to connect to the internet. Can some body please help me or point me in the direction to figure out how I get the Ubuntu to talk to host XP and find a route out of the physical machine to the internet.

Charging Models Workshop

Dear UKLVMUG members,

I want to run a workshop specifically on the topic of charging models for virtual servers, are you interested? We've a development farm and a production farm: they're different because resources are to be leased from the dev farm but purchased from prod.

How do we best do that?
Should it be funded centrally or by business areas?
Are there 3rd party apps which can help us?
What do we measure?

Date: Friday 5th May, 09:30-13:00
Venue: City of London

Who should attend?
Those planning to design and implement internal charging models for virtual servers, or those who have already done it. I can accommodate up to 20 people, but only those who've attended previous User Groups please!

How to apply?
Drop me an email - you know the address!

No suppliers please, just users. It won't be a show, everyone will be a contributor.

And perhaps we can have a quick liquid lunch afterwards....

Best regards,

A big thumbs up and thanks for yesterday.

Lee James' presentation was excellent, incredibly informative and interesting. I have certainly taken a few ideas back and would have been quite happy to listen to Lee in more detail. Although I'm sure its been a lot of hard work, it sounds like a dream project to be involved with!

Special mention for Alex Mittell, who's dead pan presentation as well as obviously knowledge was up there with the best presentations I've seen in a long while!

Cheers
Big Brother Monitoring Virtual Server

We have been using the Big Brother Monitoring Tool for a few years now. I recently converted our Big Brother Monitoring server to virtual using Platespin, but had to roll back to the physical machine. The conversion was fine and the server is fully operational except now the Big Brother Server service will not start.

We are running ESX 3.0.1 and the virtual server is Windows 2003 server.

I found that I needed to reduce the threads Big Brother uses to monitor the devices to resolve the issue. The entry in the config file is BBNETTHREADS. The default is 20, but to get Big Brother to work on a virtual server I had to reduce this down to 1. I don't want to proceed with this as it will reduce the effectiveness of the Big Brother monitoring.

BBNETTHREADS is the number of concurrent tests the BBNET server can execute. You can increase the value until you notice a degradation in system and Big Brother resources. A thread is based on a bb-hosts host line.

I have confirmed that this problem does not happen on a physical machine.

Has anybody has this problem before? Has anybody got an idea on why this issue would arise on a virtual machine?

Thanks
London Usergroup Meeting - Feb 15th **DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE**

If you wish to attend the next usergroup meeting, please email your details to Alaric Davies (alaricdavies@yahoo.com).

Simply replying to this post is not enough. Space is always limited, so email your interest a.s.a.p. to avoid disappointment. The venue has a very strict admission policy so unless you hear back from Alaric confirming your attendance, please don't just turn up on the day.

***********************************************************

Dear All,

It’s been much too long... The Steering Committee are happy to announce the next UK London VMware User Group Meeting, to be held on Thursday 15th February 2007.

Our meeting will be held at the offices of Bank of America Plc, 5 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5AQ. Reception from 1230 for a prompt 1pm start, to finish around 5pm. The nearest station is Canary Wharf, on both the Jubilee Line and the DLR.

Directions: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=E14+5AQ

The theme for the meeting is ‘Availability’, and we have some interesting takes on this topic developing. Subject to change, the agenda looks something like this:

1300 What’s in the News

1315 VMware HA

1400 VMFS3 & Availability (Journaling)

1445 Break

1500 Availability War Stories

1530 VirtualCenter High Availability

1600 HP VMM & IBM Director monitoring

1645 Rob Easton – VMware specific updates

Please note that the item at 1500 will be user-generated – i.e. you folks and your tales from the datacentre! We are looking for 3 people who would be happy to present on this topic for 10 minutes each – it could be a tale of woe, or one of over-powering technical brilliance, so long as it concerns availability in some way. Please get in touch with Stuart Thompson (email address at bottom of this mail), if you are interested in helping us out.

Coffee and biccies kindly sponsored by VMware. We hope to see you at the meeting, and afterwards for a drink or two.

To register your interest in attending, please send an email with up to two named attendees from your organisation to <alaricdavies at yahoo.com>. If you do not receive a confirmation mail from us, please don’t just turn up – we will not be able to admit you to the building.
UK London VMware User Group Meeting on 15/08/06 - NEW LOCATION !

Folks,

Due to circumstances beyond their control, EDF Energy have been forced to re-locate us for the meeting on Tuesday.

They have very kindly arranged for us to be re-housed just around the corner from our previous destination, at the Rubens Hotel (www.rubenshotel.com), located at 39 Buckingham Palace Road:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=sw1w+0ps

We have been allocated the Van Dyke suite. There's a theme here somewhere...

Please arrange to be there around 1230 for a 1300 start, there will be signs and assistance at EDF's reception for those of you who are unable to access email between now and then.

Thanks are due to our contacts at EDF for coping with this late-breaking situation as effectively as they have done.

Sincerely, and with regards,

Please see below for the invitation to our next meeting. If at all possible, please email me directly (alaricdavies at yahoo dot com) to request a place, rather than replying to this post.

In addition, PLEASE DO NOT JUST TURN UP without having received confirmation of your place. We need to provide a list of all attendees to our hosts ahead of time.

Thanks,
