Virtualization Forum
Hey Guys,

I dont know how many would be interested but i started a virtualization forum. The idea behind it is to share problems, and design ideas, and to work through any problems that people have.

If you interested check it out at http://www.vm-talk.com

Thanks,
Thank you and Sponsorship offering

Cincinnati VMUG members,

I just wanted to send a note of thanks for your warm welcome and hospitality at the October 1 meeting.

It was suggested that we attend and as a vendor/partner, I found the meeting to be informative and well worth the time.
Who could have predicted they would consume 14,813 banana's at vmworld?

As a VMWare partner and Data Management Software, Services and Solutions provider we would appreciate your offer to sponsor
an upcoming meeting and present our solutions for your consideration.

Please contact me at to discuss availability and details.

Kind regards,
ThinApp Deployment

Good morning.

I very much enjoyed the presentation on ThinApp at the last Vmug meeting. Both my manager and I are excited about using this in the environment to take care of certain problems we're having.

The one thing I haven't been able to figure out yet is how to create apps and deploy them onto our Citrix server. Since Citrix re-maps the C drive to drive M (typically), the app's that I've created will not run. Do I have to go in and tweak something before building so they will work, or will I have to make all new app's specifically for the Citrix server?

I look forward to getting this into production.

Hi everyone, I have been trying to attend one of these meetings for quite some time now but always having something going on the night of the meeting. In this case, I'll be at the Brad Paisley concert in Dayton on 1/29. Anyways, I am a Network Administrator at a law firm downtown getting ready to start our first virtualization project. Along with that, we will be installing a iSCSI SAN. Any tips, notes, tricks, suggestions are welcomed. Hopefully I can make it to the next meeting.
Hyperthreading not available
We just purchased a new Dell Poweredge 2950 with 2 Xeon Quad core processors. I've checked to make sure the virtualization options are enabled in the bios, however in the infrastructure client configuration it still shows Hyperthreading as N/A. So I'm curious what the requirements are to have hyperthreading active?

I've used the free VM Server for quite some time. This is only the 2nd ESX server I've installed, but from the looks of it both servers (both 2950's) have Hyperthreading marked as Inactive.

Any help is appreciated.
Moving VM's
I've been using Vmware Server for years, but I've only recently started using ESX for our production network. I currently have 2 of the free Vmware Servers and 2 ESX 3i servers.

One of the big benifits I liked about Vmware Server was if my host server was having issues I could shut the vm down, copy the directory to another server, then with a few minor changes I could be back up and running inside of 10 minutes. But it's looking like to get the same functionality with ESX I'd have to buy a copy of Virtual Infrastructure, which I'm not going to get approval for right now. Is there any way of moving a VM from one ESX server to another WITHOUT having to buy VI3? Eventually I will end up getting a copy, but for now I have to rely on moving things myself.

Thanks in advance for any help!
ESXi issue
Since vmware released their ESXi for free I decided to build one to replace one of the Vmware Server 1.06 installs I have. It says it's registered, but whenever I try to start up a guest that I vmconverted from the VS1.06 install I get two errors in the event log.

This product has expired. Be sure thta your host machine's date and time are set correctly.

Failed to power on: A general system error occured.

Do I need to go re-register and download a new license key? I just got it today. I've restarted the server as well as blown away the guest and re-converted it over.

Any thoughts/help/etc is appreciated
Summer Technology User conference - July 29th, 2008 Pittsburgh PA
Greetings from the Western PA VMware User Group,

We thought that we'd invite anyone from your User Group to our upcoming event on July 29th. We have a total of 17 vendors covering a wide range of topics and areas as they relate to VMware, servers, chipsets, storage, etc... See below information for additional details and a link to the VMware site for registration. We'd love to have you participate and we're hoping for 200-250 attendees.

3Par

Akorri

AMD

ChipPC

DataDomain

Dell

DoubleTake

EMC

HP

Intel

Lefthand Networks

NetApp

PlateSpin

TripWire

Vizioncore

VKernel

VMware

How's that for a list of vendors? In addition to the 35 presentations during the day, the expo hall will be open from
8:30 AM - 4:45 PM. The official registration page is located at:

http://campaign.vmware.com/usergroup/invites/WesternPA_UserConference_7-29-08.html

Also, please pass this invite on to fellow co-workers and other people that might be interested in the event. Though it's VMware centered, there's enough here for almost any member of an IT staff to find value in attending. We'll have SANs, servers, thin clients, chip set providers and more providing the latest information on their product offerings. So, please take the time from your busy schedules and make it a point to attend the event and encourage others in your departments to attend as well.

Thanks and have a great day!
ESX Autostart
I've been using VMWare for years, but recently I've put up my first ESX server. I'm running into a problem where when the ESX is rebooted, the VM's that I have marked to startup automatically do not start up.

Under configuration, under Virtual Machine Startup and Shutdown, I have 2 guests set to automatically start up. Startup is Enabled, Delay is 120 Seconds. Shutdown is set to Power Off, with a delay of 120 seconds.

The server is an ESX Server 3i 3.5.0, 70348.

I've been putting things up on VMware Server for a couple years now, but this is the first time that I've been able to convince them that an ESX server is needed, so I'm kind of rushing to get up to speed on how the ESX is different and how things work. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks much!
P to V synchronization functionality?

We have gone through the P2V process to take key production servers and virtualize them to our DR site.

As we all know, changes happen to production servers and I was wondering if there was a utility or script or method to
synchronized a physical server with it's previously generated virtualzation.

It seems like it is labor/time intensive to have to re-P2V systems everytime the source changes.

Are there any solutions out there to keep the systems in synch?
Curious if any VMware customers have already gone the upgrade path of 2.5.4 to 3.5 or if anyone is in the process of doing so?

I have a large customer in Cinci who's looking to speak with customers who've already gone this route. Just want to pick their brains, understand any issues, etc.

I'd be looking for a customer contact who wouldn't mind being introduced to my customer and having a conversation about the upgrade.

THank you for the help.
Direct LUN access
I am looking for opinions on accessing the LUNS from within virtual machines running on ESX. This as opposed to just making large virtual disks. I had heard thee were some performance advantages to be had with direct access, however in the VMs I am using it on I am not sure I am seeing it. It does however have an adverse effect on the portability of the virtual machines.

Right now my Exchange database is on a direct access lun but when I build a new server I am wondering if I should just allow enough space in a virtual disk and save a little complexity.

If you have done this or just have an opinion I would love to hear it.

Registration for COVUG Tech Days is now open! Details below.

The Central Ohio VMware User’s Group is hosting their second regional event. We have roughly 40 vendors coming from all over talking about all kinds of topics. There will also be even more technical breakout sessions throughout the day.

The list of topics that will be engaged in over the two day event is long but you can see most of the list here at the general information site.

http://65.189.158.30

Not only is this event going to have a 10 thousand square ft vendor floor with all kinds of hands on stuff and demos, but there will be presentations going on all day and breakout sessions.

View the list of topics and see what all is going on.

Sign up quick to ensure you can attend and get the handout bag full of goodies from the vendors.

The vendors are silly with big give-aways. I can’t even mention them here.

P.S. This is being held at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, OH and rooms are very cheap. It’s about 1 hour and 55 minutes from Columbus Ohio. Bring the family as there are plenty of things to do.

Go here to register: http://info.vmware.com/content/UGReg-MultiSession?session=UserGroup-CentralOhio

COVUG Summer Tech Days

The Central Oho VMware User’s Group has its summer version of the highly successful Tech Days event coming up. This event will be July 19th and 20th at the extremely popular KalahariResorts.com location next to the even more popular Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

Not only are there currently 40 vendors lined up to present and talk about all different kinds of technologies surrounding virtualization but they are also ready to fill the huge vendor floor with all kinds of booths and information.

You may think it amazing that there will be a Luau the evening of the 19th open to all attendees, a game room filled with large screen TVs with game consoles, and that overnight rooms will be available for a large portion of the attendees who are first to register for only $100 (give or take $10). However you will be astonished to find out that the event itself is free.

The Central Ohio VMware User’s Group is working diligently to bring all this together. We expect registration to be opened some time in the middle of June and the invites will come from VMware.

We are looking for some people to help lead informal discussions on different technical topics. It is our objective to have a good range of technical information available and these discussion forums will be a part of that.

For Questions, Comments, suggestions or other please contact:
Or
Stay tuned for more info as the event comes together.
