New Lansing VMUG

After several years of kicking the idea around and now several months of trying, we now have an official VMware user group in Lansing. The community site is located at http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmug/us-central/lansing.

I want to introduce myself. My name is Chris Cullingford and I have volunteered to be the leader of the Lansing VMUG. I am a Technical Architect for the State of Michigan’s Department of Information Technology responsible for the design and deployment of server virtualization technology for the state.

Our first meeting will be after the first of the year. I am looking to have meetings quarterly. I am trying to secure a facility for our first meeting so we can lock in dates and speakers. If you have a facility available in the Lansing area that could accommodate 60-70 people and would be willing to help please contact me via the community.

Be on the lookout for the meeting notice coming soon. To ensure you receive it go to http://info.vmware.com/content/subscription and update your profile to include VMUG event announcements.

I look forward to meeting you at the upcoming meetings.

Until later,

I have a contact that agreed to come up with a location for us for the next meeting. Is John still running the Western MI VMUG and does anyone have his contact info so I can get the two in touch? Do we have anyone willing to present?

Thanks.

I am looking at setting up a meeting in May. It looked like there were a few people interested. I need to get in contact with people at VMWare because I am not sure what our status is. Please reply to this posting with what you can provide (anything with a question mark). If you have news or want to report on a VMWare news topic make please post the topic so we can make sure only one person will talk about one topic and have a quick paragraph or two discussing the news post. Thanks --Joe
Upgrade Virtual Hardware taking a long time
I just upgraded from ESX Server 2.x to 3.5 and have nine virtual machines running on this box. I ran "Upgrade Virtual Hardware" on all nine, all but three have successfully been updated. The three still in progress have been running for over 2 hours. Does anyone have any ideas why these are taking so long and what can be done? Nothing is special compared to the other six that updated fine and only took a few seconds.

Thanks,
Backup procedures of VMWare machines

I'm a newer convert to VMWare, and have successfully implemented an ESX 3 environment that is quickly growing. As this happens, one of the questions that I've had - which seems to have a lot of different possibilities and answers - is: what is the best way to back up different VMs?
Our implementation of VM has been to get a number of single-purpose linux and windows machines that were mostly running on cast-off desktops or old servers virtualized. This means we'd love to have backups of them - but at a low-cost solution as much as possible. File-level restores are ideal, and we're currently using Veritas NetBackup as our backup software.
Is anyone doing Consolidated Backup or some other homegrown or alternative-type of backup solution and is willing to share their story? Perhaps this would be a good presentation for the User Group if someone does...

We are currently researching a hardware platform for our future ESX servers. We are looking at the differences between "Big Boxes" and Blades. Our current plan is to migrate 100-130 servers into ESX.

What have any of had good/bad/indifferent experiences with?

If you are looking for a new job and want to see the best/most jobs related to working with VMware products, where is the best place? Is it a job website like Monster? Or are there better places to look? Any ideas?
VM communication in the DMZ

ESX VI3 Host: HP DL385 16GB RAM, (2) Dual-core Optrons, Quad-port 1GB NIC (HP NC340T)

(2) NICs connect our VSwitch to the DMZ Cisco 3750 Switch

We have a VM running Windows 2003 Server R2 that is in our DMZ and it is having communication issues. (static IP 192.168.x.x)

We have a hardware VPN tunnel between our site and a vendors site, that connects our program on our troubled VM to theirs.

The problem:
Open up a command window to ping our vendor to make sure the VPN tunnel is up, and it works fine. Browse the Internet to make sure we can connect to another vendor over http, that works as well. But when we try to ping a second time we get request timed out. Put the static IP on a physical machine and get none of the problems......

Now I was at the last user group meeting in Grand Haven, and I talked with a gentleman that said he was having the same issue. They resolved the issue by upgrading the IOS on their PIX. (I forgot to get his name or who he worked for....oops). Well we replaced our PIX 515E with a Cisco ASA5510 version 8.02 and we are still having the issue.

Any thoughts?

Registration for COVUG Tech Days is now open! It's worth the drive!!!

The Central Ohio VMware User’s Group is hosting their second regional event. We have roughly 40 vendors coming from all over talking about all kinds of topics. There will also be even more technical breakout sessions throughout the day.

The list of topics that will be engaged in over the two day event is long but you can see most of the list here at the general information site.

http://65.189.158.30

Not only is this event going to have a 10 thousand square ft vendor floor with all kinds of hands on stuff and demos, but there will be presentations going on all day and breakout sessions.

View the list of topics and see what all is going on.

Sign up quick to ensure you can attend and get the handout bag full of goodies from the vendors.

The vendors are silly with big give-aways. I can’t even mention them here.

P.S. This is being held at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, OH and rooms are very cheap. It’s about 1 hour and 55 minutes from Columbus Ohio. Bring the family as there are plenty of things to do.

Go here to register: http://info.vmware.com/content/UGReg-MultiSession?session=UserGroup-CentralOhio

COVUG Summer Tech Days

The Central Oho VMware User’s Group has its summer version of the highly successful Tech Days event coming up. This event will be July 19th and 20th at the extremely popular KalahariResorts.com location next to the even more popular Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

Not only are there currently 40 vendors lined up to present and talk about all different kinds of technologies surrounding virtualization but they are also ready to fill the huge vendor floor with all kinds of booths and information.

You may think it amazing that there will be a Luau the evening of the 19th open to all attendees, a game room filled with large screen TVs with game consoles, and that overnight rooms will be available for a large portion of the attendees who are first to register for only $100 (give or take $10). However you will be astonished to find out that the event itself is free.

The Central Ohio VMware User’s Group is working diligently to bring all this together. We expect registration to be opened some time in the middle of June and the invites will come from VMware.

We are looking for some people to help lead informal discussions on different technical topics. It is our objective to have a good range of technical information available and these discussion forums will be a part of that.
Suggestion: Agenda

Is it possible to get an agenda sent out before the next meeting? The only reason I ask is because at yesterday's meeting, I felt it was sort of "sales-pitchy" for the first 45-60 minutes. We meet with vendors on a regular basis and have heard a lot of this stuff before, so hearing it again doesn't add a lot of value for me personally.

I'm not against bringing in vendors to talk about the cool new stuff they have, I'm all for it actually. However, I'm sure there are other topics that other members may or may not find valuable depending on where they are with their current environemnt, and if we had an agenda before hand we could decide if attendance would be worth the time away from work.

Just a thought.

From a question we had in today's user group meeting I decided to post the answer.

The question: Can you manage ESX 2.5.2 with VC2 or must you be at ESX 2.5.3?

The answer: VC 2.0 can manage 2.0.1, 2.1.x, 2.5.x, and 3.0. The documentation can be found at http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/releasenotes_vi3.html#beforebegin.
Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who attended our last meeting in June. Thanks also to Jason and JSJ for providing the meeting place and Hi-Tech, Inc. for giving the presentation.

We need to decide on when and where we would like to hold our next meeting. I am thinking sometime around October would be good. It would be best if we confirm this at least a month before whatever date we decide on for the next meeting so VMWare has enough time to get invitations out.

Go ahead and reply to this topic if you have suggestions for dates and times for the next meeting.

Thanks!

Is anyone from the group thinking of going to vmworld in Las Vegas? I would like to go, but it would be nice if that had the content catelog ready when the site went live. Its hard to convince your manager to go, when you don't even know what sessions they are going to have.
Please feel free to post presentation topics here. I will collect any topics off of this thread and bring them to our meeting and we can decide which topic we would like to discuss for the next meeting.

My suggestions:
Backup processes
Automated Replication
Quick deployment

What do you think?

Hello West Michigan Users Group

Welcome to the Forum for West Michigan Users Group. This probably seems like a big area that is covered but I hope we are going to get a good turn out.

Depending on the turn out I would like to get a general geological layout of where people are coming from.

I see this forum as a place where we will post requests for presentors, presentation topics and possibly links to the presentations done during our meetings.

Please make sure to "Watch" the Western MI Area Vmware User Group forum so you can get updates for our future meetings.

I will post one more topic today. It will be suggestions for future topics. I would like to see us do presentations on an idea rather than peoples setups. Then have a discussion on that topic.
