Anyone using VMware Lifecycle Manager?

Would like to find someone who is using VMwareLifecycle Manager. We are currently using a combination of VMware ESX 3.5 and Lab Manager 3. We are evaluating the VMware Lifecycle Manager for the workflow provisioning features, specifically. Anyone have any experience with this product in a production environment?

Going ESX, 1 server....

I'm planning on retiring some well overdue hardware in production by end of year but my allowed budget is very limited. I have used VMWare Server in the past with great results but I am totally new to ESX. My plan is to get an HP ML370 (Xeon 3.0 X 2 - 8 cores), 8GB RAM, 1TB SAS, I would like to run ESX on it and initially it would run about 5 virtual NT boxes. My question is, down the line when I get a go ahead for more hardware and add 2 more of these servers will I then be able to cluster for HA? or is that something that has to be setup right away?

Problem sync'ing Palm with VMware Server 2.0
I have been running VMware Server 1.x for over a year now. I just upgraded to Server 2.0. Everything works great, except I can no long sync my palm pilot to my WIndows XP VM.

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 X86_64 with Kernel 2.6.22-16-generic. All latest updated have been applied. After doing some reading on the web, I discovered that there seem to be a number of issues surrounding the USB support in Server 2.0 under Linux. I have successfully attached and used a 4GB thumb drive, so I think I have most of the problems worked out. (Except even the thumb drive connected at USB 1.x speed even though it's a USB 2.0 drive & port) Unfortunately, I can't get my Palm Tungsten/E to sync.

When attempting to sync, the device is recognized by VMware, I use the menu to connect the device. I hear the tone that signifies the device was connected. Then nothing happens. After a minute or so (timeout period), I hear the device disconnect tone and the Palm icon on the VMware status bar goes away. The only error I am getting is an error on the Palm saying that the connection between the Palm and the VM could not be established. Obviously someting is wrong in the handshaking.
Is there a VM based solution to streamline ghosting & deghosting process for desktops or workstations?

Hi All,

I am new to PAVMUG and seeking a solution to solve an interesting issue at hands. Any helpful advice or pointers from fellow forum members is greatly appreciated. Currently I am facing some challenges to manage an ever growing set of master ghost disks for various Windows based Operating Systems to hardware platform models. As our hardware vendor, Dell, phases out some hardware models that we use; we find ourselves continually having to make new master ghost disks for each model. We are using a combination of Symantec Ghost and Windows Sysprep to build master ghost disks on CD. Simultaneously we still need to support the older models out in the field at remote customer sites. Needless to say this predicament makes configuration management very tricky along with other things like staging.

In an ideal world I would like to have only one universal master ghost disks that apply to any hardware models that Dell throws at us but alas this is not to be at this present junction with my current knowledge. A few months ago I attended a PAVMUG meeting and heard about some of the magic that VMware based solution can offer. I heard about its ability to decouple the software from the hardware but it seems to be focus primarily at data center and Enterprise crowd with huge budget along with human capital to match.

What I am seeking for on the other hand is a less complex solution.

Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
I've got a dba that doesn't want database servers virtualized, and a boss who's highly skeptical about VMotion. Can anybody offer a walkthrough of such an environment? I'd love to be able to show them a working example of what I'm tryig to sell them.

Did they purchase the wrong hardware
I walked into an organization that purchased a Dell 2900 PowerEdge Server setup with 2 250GB drives as a mirror and 8 400GB drives for storage. They just handed me a license for ESX enterprise server, OK I'm new at this virtualization game, but from what I learned in the installation and configuration class that setup isn't the best configuration for ESX enterprise server. They have informed me that replacing the system with a SANS unit is out of the question. What are my options? Load ESX server on the mirror RAID is the first thing I considering, how to configure the 400GB drives is my dilemma. What's best a RAID 5 configuration or run each drive separate? I'm looking for some discussion in that area.

new to this virtual game,
Hello all,
I'm in the process of rolling out VI3 in our Development Environment and need some help with creating jobs for VCB. I've reviewed the documentation provided in the Virtual Machine Backup Guide and TSM VCB Interoperability Module as well as Google Searches and still am not totally sure how to create the jobs for full virtual machine backups (vmfs). Can anyone point me to additional documentation or resources that will help to clarify the process? Thanks, Dennis

PAVMUG September 28

Thanks to all the presenters and contributors for a fine user group meeting. This was my first and I found it very informative. I look forward to many more in the future. I would however like to offer a bit of critique. I understand the purpose of these meetings and the reasons why some things are the way they are, but I feel it would be more beneficial to the community as a whole to make it feel less like a sales pitch for a time share and more like a group of people gathering for a common goal. Can we allot more time towards sharing VMWare experiences, hurdles, and triumphs? I really would like to learn more about how other people are using and implementing VMWare and their subset of tools and although this is a user group, it's not easy to query and understand 60 people's responses in less than an hour(especially when that hour is spread out over 5 hours and only given in 15 minute segments). I think I've made my case. The user group is a great idea, but I feel it could be more focused on actual use. Again, thank you to everyone involved.

Good Day all-

First let me say that the conference was great.. I have yet to make it to a VMUG meeting, but am looking forward to the next one in July.

OK, on to my topic- VMWare Certification. I have taken the ESX 2.x class and did not complete a certification. My company is currently running VMWare ESX 3.0.1 and I have a solid backround with the installation, patch application, VM creation, conversion, deployment, etc.

I manage about 50+ servers for our testing dept. as well as our customer support dept. Does anyone find certification to be a valuable tool, or since Virtualization is still in it's adoloscent stages, does experience play more of role with this technology? What are the thoughts on certification from the group? Does anyone hold a VCP certification and do you think it adds value??

VEEAM SOFTWARE RELEASES MONITOR FOR VMWARE

Veeam Software announced the release of Veeam Monitor, an application
designed to monitor the performance and resource usage of VMware virtual
machines.

Veeam Monitor provides a unified view of the performance and resource
usage of all virtual machines running on a VMware Server or VMware
Workstation platform. The best way to explain the product would be to
describe it as a Windows Task Manager for VMware virtual machines. ...
VM Security

Attached file contains links

We in the security business couldn't help but to take notice of a Gartner press release that went out last week about how virtualization can weaken security. It capped roughly six weeks of press and blog discussions about virtualization and security. To help you make sense of it I've selected a list of what I think is the best feature coverage from across the meda.

Recent Coverage of Virtualization and Security

"Virtualization's New Frontier: Security" - InformationWeek - Larry Greenemeier - March 2007
Larry talks about the benefits and security risks inherent with virtualization, based on recent interviews with security and virtualization experts; the article includes a pros and cons chart for virtualization security.

"VMS Create Potential Risks" - Dark Reading - Kelly Jackson Higgins - February 2007
Kelly interviews Gartner's Neil MacDonald, VMware's Patrick Lin, Matasono's Thomas Ptacek, Security Incite's Michael Rothman and Blue Lane's Allwyn Sequeira in a timely and thorough introduction to the virtualization security discussion.

"Virtualization: The Beginning of the End of Static Security" - Always On - Greg Ness - February 2007
I've been simply overwhelmed by the blogsphere reaction to my mid-February column at Always On. Six virtualization expert blogs have linked to the column and initiated some excellent dialogue. I talk about the 4 critical differences between physical and virtualized infrastructures and what it means for static security solutions. Want to follow the blog discussion? Simply click on the Technorati icon that follows the piece and follow the links!

"VMware Annoints Blue Lane" - Searchservervirtualization.com - Alex Barrett - March 2007
Alex interviewed a wide range of experts, including a leading virtualization consultant about Blue Lane and the impact of virtualization on security. It's obvious that hours of interviews went into her very thorough coverage of the Blue Lane launch. Note: while we don't consider ourselves a patch management vendor, we do protect VMs from remote attacks against unpatched vulnerabilities.

"Blue Lane Shields Virtual Machines" - Network World - Denise Dubie - March 2007
Denise was the first editor to cover the emergence of the application front end, which ultimately became a sizable category with the likes of Cisco, Citrix, F5 and Juniper joining the category through acquisition and/or product extension. It wasn't surprising, therefore, to see her piece get picked up across the IDG global empire.

"Blue Lane Provides Security for Virtual Machines" - InfoWorld - David Marshall - March 2007
If your scanning news and blogs about virtualization its difficult not to run into David. He is typical of InfoWorld's ability to recruit insightful, "no-holds-barred" subject matter experts across multiple categories. David's concise overview of the security challenges of virtualization is easy to read and informative.

Next time I'll share my favorites from the blogsphere, where virtualization and security bloggers have also weighed in. BTW- Neil MacDonald's Gartner report is well worth the read. If you're not a Gartner client and want an excellent analyst introduction to the issues check out this Nemertes report.

Gregory Ness
Blue Lane Technologies
10450 Bubb Road
Cupertino, CA 95014

P.S. You can always find other research papers and webcasts about patching in our Info Center.

VMcasting

http://www.vmcasting.org/

VMcasting is an automatic virtual machine deployment mechanism based on RSS2.0 whereby virtual machine images are transferred from a server to a client securely delivering files containing a Technical Specification (http://www.vmcasting.org/vmcastingspec/) and virtual disk image.

The concept of VMcasting is based on the similar concept of Podcasting, the popular trend of audio content delivered via an RSS feed presenting a downloadable or streaming file (often an MP3). With VMcasting, a developer publishes an RSS 2.0 feed where each item describes a release of a particular Virtual Machine Image or Virtual Appliance. The items descriptions may contain release notes or other information about what's new in a particular release. Therefore developers can be easily upgrade or install using a virtual server management system such as Enomalism.

I would like to say I enjoyed attending my first VM users group. I found the vendor presentaions interesting and informative. I found Dan Anderson's "Best Practice" extremely educational. I really would like a copy of that presentation. It would make my life easier when I explain to my superiors what we need to do.
PAVMUG Meeting Agenda - March 30th 2006

Currently, we have three vendors signed up for PAVMUG's March 30th meeting - PlateSpin, Akimbi Systems and Expert Server Group:

Expert Server group will discuss the ESXCharter and ESXReplicator software from Vizioncore.

PlateSpin PowerConvert is a software solution that streams servers between physical servers, blade infrastructures, virtual machines, and image archives over the network. PlateSpin’s powerful OS Portability (patent pending) is the first and only technology that decouples data, applications and operating systems from servers, re-configures and optimizes resources, and automatically streams them to any physical or virtual platform. Remotely drag-and-drop servers across dissimilar infrastructures around the world to optimize server resource capacity, saving time and money.

PlateSpin PowerRecon is agentless software that measures, analyses and determines the optimal fit between server resource supply and workload demand. By remotely capturing server resource capacity and workload demand statistics, PlateSpin PowerRecon ensures that the right server infrastructure has been matched to the right application workload to maximize performance, while minimizing hardware cost. Take the guesswork out of capacity planning, server consolidation, and continuous server optimization projects.

Akimbi Systems, a VMware Technology Alliance Partner, brings
test/development lab consolidation and automation to life. Many
companies today have consolidated their data-centers and realized huge
capital savings. Consolidation of test and development labs hasn't seen
that same insurgence, due to the multitude of complex configurations
possible in those environments.

Using VMware and Akimbi, engineers finally have the ability to
self-provision virtual test/dev environments. They can now suspend,
capture, restore and share these complex environments via a
simple-to-use library; eliminating the need to re-create the
environments to reproduce bugs, etc. Additionally, IT organizations see
cost savings from consolidation of test/dev servers and resource
overhead used for provisioning requests.

Test/Dev Lab Consolidation and Automation is now possible; learn more
Hello,
I'm new to ESX; I installed ESX on a HP Blade server and I created some vm. Now, one of these vm has Linux as guest OS installed. Now, I would like some colleagues to use their own vm. I don't know what to do to add packets to the installation without using physical cdrom drive attached to the Blade server. I mean, could they use their local drive to read each installation CD and add selected files or is there any other way to do this?
Thanks in advance,

Mixing production and non-prod VMs on the same ESX server?

I'm getting ready to set policy on this point, and see pros and cons. Can anyone share with me how you've made this decision in your environment?

Do you mix prod and non-prod VMs on the same ESX server, or farm? What about different VLANs? Do you have VMs from the same ESX server connected to internal and DMZ VLANs? Do you have completely seperate ESX environments for each of these needs? Why?

Thanks,
Following Ray and Tom's lead, I am curious to see what people are interested in for presentations? Since the meetings should be "for us, the users", should we try to get more technical discussions? Should we have more management presentations? More of how other venders are leveraging the technology?

Personally, I wouldn't mind finding out more tips and tricks for the command line. I am a Software Engineer by trade (Computer Enginerd at heart ;)), so I would like to see more technical reviews. Perhaps a presentation on customer gains and best practices when applying Hyperthreading technology would be interesting? Since we all know that Hyperthreading is not actually a 2-to-1 relationship. Does the local community agree?

More importantly, what would you like to see?
P.S. ~ I think Ray and Tom have been doing an excellent job so far. If you get a chance, I think we should all congratulate them and request that they keep up the good work! Well done!

Re: Dell vs. HP

We're looking to start look at going to VMWare, and was wondering what the support is like for VMWare with Dell vs. HP. At the user group, it seemed like HP is "ahead" of Dell in terms of support, but wanted to know if there were any white papers or spec sheets that compared the abilities of the different hardware platforms. If anybody knows of such, I'd much appreciate a link.

Thanks,
