Cisco Nexus Patch Info
I found this online when looking at the patches being installed on vShpere and saw this. If you plan on using the Nexus stuff, please read.

vCenter Update Manager does not list patches or updates for Cisco Nexus 1000V by default. This knowledge base article provides the procedure for adding a Cisco Nexus 1000V patch source to vCenter Update Manager.

See KB Article: 1013134 on how to add the Cisco Nexus Patch info into update manager.
Application Performance
What is the strategy that most organizations are adopting to monitor application performance and troubleshoot in the virtual domain?

"While server virtualization is happening at a rapid rate, tools for managing application performance in these environments have not kept pace," said Will Cappelli, research vice president at Gartner. "In order to understand application behavior, one needs to combine data from the dynamically reconfiguring application layer, network layers, and virtualization layer. Traditional tools which assume that the environments remain static while an application executes are not answering the needs of the Global 2000."

Cost and complexity are 2 major inhibitors that have been overcome by Network Instruments who has a long track record of monitoring and isolating the root-cause of performance problems in the physical domain. http://www.networkinstruments.com/products/observer/virtualization.html

See a workflow sequence attached and download the VM brochure at http://www.networkinstruments.com/assets/pdf/virtualization_b.pdf

Full demonstrations and evaluations can be arranged by calling Rick Kingsley of Network Instruments at 972-219-6811 or by email at rkingsley@netinst.com
Great VMUG yesterday. I hope everyone who attended feels the same way. The next VMUG is scheduled for Sept. 22nd. I will post an announcement when the date is confirmed. I am attaching the presentation from the meeting. I will post all of them as I get them.

A special thanks to the sponsors for providing the food for the VMUG. Emulex, Terremark, VKernel and SHI.
DFW VMUG - Venue
All,

We are growing out of the current venue that we house the DFW VMUG. This is a good thing. I am currently looking for a new place to house the VMUG. Any suggestions on a venue?

Please keep in mind the following:

1. Venue - Needs to be centrally located for all of Fort Worth and Dallas participants.

2. Room Size - I would say around 200

3. Food - The Cost of food has to be reasonable. $25-$30 a person is a big much in my opinion.

3. Price - The VMUG doesn't have or make money, We have to find sponsors for each event to cover the cost. During the tough times, some companies can't shell out $3000 to have it in Hotels...

We will take all considerations into account. I am open to all suggestions.

Thanks,
Looking for VMWARE Training...

An associate and myself are seeking VMWARE bootcamp training as we're switching to a VM solution this summer. We're in education so would like a company with a good reputation that does educational pricing. The last company we looked at was Choice Solutions but they were a little out of our price range. Thanks for your help!
LAN-Free VCB Restore -- over Fibre Channel like backups?
I had to do a restore of a 629GB VM and it took about 30 hours to complete because it was aparently using the network to do the restore. The backup was done using vcbMounter CLI. I currently do not have any integration for VCB with any backup products like NetBackup, although I own NetBackup and use it to take the fullvm VCB backup that was written to disk and export it to tape.

I've seen some web pages talking about "LAN-free" and "VCB" -- one from 2006 talking about how VMware was looking at VCB restore over fibre in about a year or two. cough 3 years later cough

Is this available yet? Is it only available if I purchase the VCB integration module for a backup product? Know when it might be available?

I just purchased VI3 Enterprise and I fear that in a DR scenario where everything needs to be restored from tape, it's going to be a very painful process. What was worse is that even though the servers are on a 1Gbps network, the restore was only running @ 8MB/sec (approx. 64Mbps) -- the network was very under-utlized overall, including running VMs. So, even if I was thinking of spending the $$$ to setup a special 10Gbps network for the ESX hosts and the VCB proxy, I don't think the restore would go any faster.

newbie problem ethernet and disk
I have just started using VMware server 2, I am having a couple of issues.

I have the host as fedore core 10. The Client as Windows Vista. I am having trouble with nat and with getting to a disk drive.

The fedora host has a 750 GB shared disk. I can get to this disk from every computer in the work group.

When I bring up the vista client. I can no longer get to anydisk on the group from any computer.

The Vista client will get onto the internet but will not see any disks that are shared in the group.

the fedora machine has 2 nics and so 2 ip address. I have the vista machine set up with only 1 nat address at present but it shows as 2 in the network page. both as connection 21?

I will eventually (after consept proof). have 2 address on the vista machine with hard addressing.

I also need to access the Blu-ray burner (ide) and as I said I would like to get to a sata disk I don't care if it is done directly or thru a shared network.

Thanks Brad Earl
I am a business owner in North Dallas and have recently made the switch from PC to Mac. Need someone with Fusion experience to help us work around a few minor issues that we are experiencing. I'm confident that this isn't a "huge" project and could probably be handle before or after normal work hours. Please reply if you're interested/qualified and available. - Thanks

64bit Vista host - WinXPProSP2 Guest - Guest Installation hung
I am trying a very simple installation of a virtual XPproSP2 on a Vista 64bit box. Nothing fancy, the VMWare Workstation app installed without incident, and launched. I began installing XPPro from CD Rom, on a 20GB partition using 2 Procs (actual pc has Intel i7 Core) and 2GB of RAM. Installation began fine...but it stayed at 39 minutes left for hours and I had to shut the pc down. It kept rolling through the different splash messgaes that appear during the XP installation, but it would never advance any further. Any ideas on this?
Hello,

There was a listing on ebay from a guy selling a VMWare discount Training Voucher that would knock $1000 off the price of the Install Configure Course. Does anyone know if this is valid and if those type of vouchers are available? I would like to take the authorized training but it is taking me longer to save for the class. Any suggestions.

Problems with 3.5u2....
All,

Ford sent this to me and I thought I would share it.

A new situation with ESX 3.5/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 has come to light that I wanted to make you aware of. A bug in this update causes the product license to expire on August 12 (today). ESX will continue to run VMs when the license is expired, but new VM startups will not be allowed, nor will operations such as VMotion.
The kb article is 1006716 at http://kb.vmware.com/.

VMware has pulled u2 from the web site. A new u2 patch will be posted shortly. Until then, the work-around is to back-date the ESX host to yesterday until the patch can be applied.
Dallas Area VMWare User Group Meeting

I noticed there hasn't been much traffic on this user group community. I would like to become a member of the DFW VMUG as I would also like some of my staff as well. What about holding the meetings in Arlington? That is half way between Dallas and Forth Worth. I can see if I can get permission use our meeting facility at the Rangers ballpark. Just a thought....

Dallas area VMUG - meeting location

Tony, since you brought it up at the meeting...let me say that the THR location has been perfect, and THR have been wonderful hosts. My vote is for the location to remain the same for every meeting. The convenience of having some meetings in my backyard (Fort Worth), will not make up for the inconvenience of having to go into Dallas on a weekday morning. No offense to Dallas commuters

DFW Events for the Future?

I am new to the area coming from one of the Biggest VMUGs in the US. Is there not many companies in the DFW area using VMware? The local user groups are usually a wealth of information for people of all skill levels in VMware and virtualization. Hate to see the wealth of knowledge I know is in Dallas and Fort Worth to go to waste.

My company, Provision Networks, would be interested in giving a technical presentation of VDI, and how our broker and last mile features complete this offering from VMware. My organization was founded to solve the problems associated with traditional Microsoft Terminal Server solutions and we have now ported our solution over to the XP desktop. Please let me know who I can contact to arrange a time that would be convenient for your group. I can be reached at bnelson@provisionnetworks.com.
