Does any body have an answer from support service?

I open two requests for a valid license and no answer back.

One was open on July 3 and the other on July 7, the first support request was derivate to other area and nothing, the second I never has an answer back.

Sorry if this task doesn't belong here.

"NAT for ESX Server 2.5 and 3.0 Hosts Is Not Supported"

We have opened previous tickets with VMware on an outstanding issue where one of our esx servers would lose connection from our VC. After several months it was stated that this is a known issue with no resolution. "This release does not provide support for connecting NAT-configured ESX Server 2.5 and 3.0 hosts to VirtualCenter Server" Seems to be false, especially now that I have the real fix to our problem. I was able to diagnose the issue to be actually a communication issue @ the speed/duplex negotiation level. When I removed the auto-negotiation @ the switch level and the NIC level of the ESX server... the issue was resolved. Also, our esx servers are NATd, so this claim of "NAT for ESX Server 2.5 and 3.0 Hosts Is Not Supported" stated in the most recent release notes is false. I would also provide this resolution to VMware support, so other vmware customers and future ones would know this potential solution and not go through the several hours of no result support I had experienced. I saw several other users that have experienced this issue as well, so I'm hoping they can see this potential solution of removing auto-negotiate. I thinking VC is not smart enough to react or know the network problem and inteprets the traffic as a mismatch or something and reacts to it as if it were a flood, causing a disconnect. Please spread the word on this resolution I've discovered and fix what is stated in the release notes to the world. Thanks!
VMWare and Microsoft SQL, Where's The Support?

After reading in a forum that Microsoft will not support SQL if it is hosted in VMWare I decided to confirm or deny this rumor by placing a call with Microsoft. I recieved the following response: (I removed my case number and condensed the formatting to place it in this forum.)

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.
I understand that you would like to know whether Microsoft supports SQL in a virtual environment. I will direct you to the appropriate team for review.
I suggest you to visit the below link which discusses about the Microsoft Virtual Server support policy:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/897613
For more information, I recommend you to contact our Microsoft Information Team at: (800) 426-9400. They are available from Monday through Friday 6:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time. This team will be in a better position to assist you.
I hope the above information is helpful.
Thank you,

The hyper link doesn't say much to answer my question so I decided to call the 1-800 number. After a few call forwards I was handed to a technician that eventually furnished me with these two documents:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;897615

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;897613

To summarize. Microsoft "may" attempt to support the product but reserves the right to require a bare metal copy prior to committing to a full support case unless you are a company that has a premier agreement with Microsoft. The first article does indicate that Microsoft does have support partners for non-Microsoft hardware virtualization software. The only partner they have listed is Novell ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944987/ ). I can only hope that some day soon VMWare will get their product added to this list. This potential lack of support has really put a sour note in the eyes of my management with regards to installing VMWare ESX server.

If my findings are outdated or incorrect please let me know. Better yet, please take steps to let everybody know.

LANDesk System Management features not working on VM
The feature which do not seem to work correctly are:

Realtime Monitoring / status from LANDesk Server Manager Web Console

View Remote Event Logs from LANDesk Server Manager Web Console

Evnvironment:

2 LANDesk Core Servers LDMS/ LDSM 8.8 running on Windows 2003 Server hosted on a ESX Host.
The 2 Core server are on different ESX hosts. Each ESX Host has several VMs.
Remote agents /clients are physical systems whic are Windows 2000 Serversand Windows 2003 Servers.
These agents connect to the core server via a frame relay circuit.

The problem has been duplicated on VMWorkstation

Are there any known problems / compatability issues associated with VMwares virtual network technologies and the above features?

Any recomendations on tuning of ESX VM or Virtual Network to resolve these issues would be appreciated.
can't get support out of VMWare
I bought a copy of VMWare Workstation 6 recently from a reseller. Can't get (30 day) support out of vmware. High end USB device does not show within Windows VM. Shows in base OS (windows). USB thumbdrive does in VM.

tried calling. tried e-mailing. tried posting in communities. Nothing. I was told that support dept looks at posting in the communities. None have posted any reply. Was told that since the reseller bought my product months ago, the 30 day support has expired. Sales has tried to fix unsuccessful. It does not show under my account. This level of support (i.e. none) is unsatisfactory considering I spent $200 on the product. Downloaded an evaluation copy of the product just so I submit a SR. SR are unassigned after 2 weeks. Egad. There's nothing in the knowledgebase on this issue either. Mostly old postings on old versions. So I asked my IT dept. They said it matches their experience. Now it is more than 30 days that I've been trying to get support. So they will probably deny it on that basis too. Help.

Lousy support: SR closed before issue resolved.

My brother bought a VMware license, and in the 30-day complimentary period we filed a SR (SR#238316). The problem was not resolved in the 30-day period, we hardly felt that the problem was understood and reproduced by VMware, and then suddenly the 30 days were gone. We didn't hear from VMware until now approximately a year later. Now VMware tells us that they have cleaned up their old SR, and therefore have closed the SR. We replied to the mail (webform@vmware.com) with the SR in subject, but got an auto-reply that the SR was closed.

That is what I call lousy support; Prolonge a support case until the support period is over, and then close the case without the customer having a chance make an objection.

Anybody got an idea of how to reopen such a SR?

We cannot even see the history of the SR, as it claims the SR period is over, and therefore does not have access to the SR system.
Complaint about partner support - Partner: CESA, Country: Costa Rica
Hello.

In the last couple of days, we have been trying to contact one of your partners here in Cost Rica, CESA, to explore the options we have to buy support for a VMWare Server installation we have in the Company. They have been repeatedly denying to talk to us, arguing that the VMWare Server product we have (which is available for free), is illegal software if we use it.

We require support to troubleshoot a performance problem we are experiencing in a VMWare Server installation we have on a 4-Quad Core machine. We are even open to consider additional options, such as getting ESX, if it is that the technical support recommends us so.

However, it has been impossible to talk to this partner.

ESX Server with AutoPatch Modula Series

I wanted to know if anyone had any info on using VM's with an AutoPatch set-up. For those not familiar with AutoPatch, it is a matrix switch with 32 inputs and 32 outputs. If I am runningseveral VM's, how would I view them over AutoPatch...or is it possible at all? Example: 3 Plasmas, and 2 projectors= 5 VM's 32x32 Autopatch Modula

How to report a monitor panic as requested by the software

I'm running VMware workstation 6.0.3 build 80004. I keep getting a virtual machine kernel stack fault with a recently-built Solaris 10 64-bit u4 virtual machine. When I enable debugging for the VM, I get a dialog box that asks me to report the problem.

Unfortunately, I don't have a support contract, and I don't want to purchase one just to report a problem. In fact, the text in the log states: "We rely on your feedback to improve the quality of our product. Please submit a support request that describes the problem at our Web page "http://www.vmware.com/info?id=8". Do not forget to attach the log file..."

So, if VMware is really relying on my feedback, I would like to provide it. Can someone advise me on how I can do that? I have attached the archive file created by the support script.

Thanks!
VMware Player - Free use in a Company?
Hello Community,

is it allowed to use VMware Player for free in a Company? I tried to find out on the website. But I did not found anything, that seems like a company licence agreement.

With kind regards,

Now that I've gone virtual - I can not longer listen to audio !(?). I have Windows Vista and a new WYSE VXO and - it has an audio jack but no sound when I plug in headphones. My machine says audio is turned on automatically, but I don't know if I need to buy a sound card - and where would I put it - or if I need to "virtual" remote audio?? I'm lost in my office w/o music.

There is a discussion going on in the "VMware Workstation" forum that a few users are confused about, and know one has been able to give a definitive answer to. I was wondering if there is a possibility that someone from VMware's support staff could take a look at the thread and give us (users) some feedback.

The thread is here: Optimal memory setting for WinXP 32-bit Guests on Linux Host?
I appreciate the help, and keep up the great work you've got a great product here

When trying to install Windows, I get a 'can't find hard drive' message

I purchased a new Microsoft Windows XP Home w/Service Pack 2.

I downloaded the free 30-day trial of VMware Fusion, with the intention of upgrading to the full version if it works for me.

VMware Fusion installation was flawless.

Popped in the Windows disk. The install wizard started up. Within a couple of moments, I get a popup window that says my hard drive is not installed. There is no way to go to the previous install screen on Windows to see if I missed a step or answered a question wrong, so I'm stuck at this message screen.

Thought I'd try to install a 'new client'. Because I only have one seat on Windows, I get another message that I can't proceed because I'm trying to use a second seat. Ugh. Go back to the first client and go through all the menu buttons options looking for a way to start over. Nothing.

February 26 I wrote to VMware. I received an email that confirmed my support request was received, but no one called or responded. Two days ago, I tried calling for support, but got lost in the voice mail tree.

Can someone walk me through the Windows installation and tell me how to get beyond the 'no hard drive found' screen. I can turn on my computer and occasionally get work done, but my computer skillz are limited, so please dumb down your response, lol. I found someone had responded to a similar question, but the instructions were completely non-sensical to my brain.

Thank you for any help you can throw my way.
Dear all,

We are using VMware Virtual Infraestructure Client 2.0, and when we try to connect to the Virtual Center Server 2.0.2 we get a message "Cannot connect to host X.X.X.X: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

We just have one Virtual Center Server in our local network.

We review the services and their status is as follows:

VMware License Server Started

VMware Virtual Infraestructure Web Access Started

VMware Virtual Mount Manager Extended Started

VMware Virtual Center Server Is Continuously Restarting

Also when we try to connect from the server that Virtual Center Server is installed the same error appear.

There are no firewall installed in the server, No changes in username and password....

Any ideas... how to solve it....???

Thanks in advance....
LUN discovery problem on ESX 3.0.2
Hi All,

I am having trouble getting a 1TB LUN that I have created on my SAN to show up on my ESX 3.0.2 server. Currently there are a total of seven data stores on the server, 2 FC SAN (300MB & 800 MB), 4 iSCSI (300MB x 4), and the local storage "storage 1". The presentation of the new LUN to the ESX server works flawlessly in Command View. When you select the ESX host in Command View the host shows to have the original two SAN LUNs preseted as well as the new one.

I presented the new LUN to my backup server and it shows up on that server immedialtly, but when I scan my Fiber Channel adapters on the ESX server the new LUN is never found.

Is there something you have to turn on to see more than seven data stores? Ideas ?

Thanks

Hello, I have a problem with the license from ESX Server. The following steps I have try to run my system:

1. install VMWare LabManager (evaluate version) on my first Server with IIS

2. install the VMWare ESX Server (evaluate version)

3. now I try to install "VMware-labmanager-agent-esx-2.5.2-124.bin" with the comand "sh VMware-labmanager-agent-esx-2.5.2-124.bin"

verifying installer files... ok
extracting files...done.
running installer.
checking for existing installation...not detected.
starting install...
checking for running as root... ok
checking for valid date/time... ok
checking for resolvable hostname... ok
checking for valid localhost entry... ok
checking for running vmware-hostd... ok
checking for vmware perl api... ok
checking for vmware-hostd validity... ok
checking for unsupported esx version... ok
checking for supported esx version... ok
checking for esx license... failed
see /var/log/labmanager/install-agent-2008-02-12-15-03-53.log for error output.

Why I get the esx license error?

No mouse in the VM window
I have installed the windows workstation version 6.0.2 onto my new Dell laptop running XP+SP2

I have used the new version of VMware to open a W2K workstation I have created using version 5.5 on a different PC, it works fine under this version

The W2K system seems to start succesfully with the desktop displayed, but whenever I click into the VMware window the mouse disappears, it re-appears when I move the mouse outside the VMware window. PS it is a USB mouse.

The help says the mouse may not work if the tools are not installed. So I try to install them. It all starts very well, but when the dialogue prompt pops within the VMware window I can't click on it to tell it to proceed, or if it does accept the mouse click, the dialogue does not clear and the installation never completes

So what am I doing wrong?

Calling Phone Support? Prepare yourself...

We are about to become brand new VMWare customers. Our dev environment was completely rolled out on Virtual Iron but we had too many problems with it.
We are going all out - first two nodes we purchased have 32GB of ram each and dual/quad cores and we are adding four more to that provided that our eval meets our expectations.

So I'm happily setting up our evalution environment when I hit a wall.
When trying to add the first node to VirtualCenter 2.5 I get this "There are not enough licenses installed to perform this operation". Huh? So I call support and choose "Licensing" (Option 2, I believe)
I get a very nice gentleman who informed me that this is a well known issue and he offers to transfer me to Technical Support. Awesome - thank you, I get transferred to the queue..

This was over an hour and 15 minutes ago. Guess what? I'm still on hold. I have heard Mozart's Eien Kleine Nachtmusik a MINIMUM of 13 times by now. I used to love Mozart, dammit.

Your product may rock but so far your support is um, not there.
Hope this isn't what we have to look forward to as a customer.

I have a MacBook and I installed a trial version of VM Fusion one month ago. My trial ends up tomorrow and I was about to buy the programm. But I just tried to connect to the internet under VM and suddenly it does not work anymore. Usually it works under WI-FI or with a cable but yet it doesn't work either ways.

If I check under Network Connection, LAN or High-Speed Internet tell me that I am connected. But still I can't access the internet. I tried a different IP address, I tried to repair (and it tells me there is nothing to repair) but still nothing...
Would you have any suggestions?
Kernel/Module Build Procedure
I'd love it, and I think it would make general community based support more effective if you would be more clear about kernel upgrade / vmware module upgrade procedure for the completely generic NON-DISTRIBUTION, something that everyone could duplicate if they wanted.

Bootstrap a totally stock/generic GNU/Linux environment on a few of the most popular architectures to install vmware (server/workstation/player, etc) and compile a correct kernel and the essential modules. Have an idea for where each of your supported distros are for their toolchains, and give us an idea where upgrades/downgrades break things. Obviously you can't test every permutation of everything, but you can test the basics, and provide a reproducible baseline.

for each released-as-stable kernel (2.6.20, 2.6.21, 2.6.22, etc) tell us the bare minimum Known Good environment necessary - binutils, gcc, tar, glibc, kernel, etc to get the modules compiled. And where to download any necessary patches, and so on. People supporting the various distributions can look into what their people have patched, and merge the changes. Maybe they release the kernels too fast, or one doesn't build right, and you skip it, and say that that kernel is not supported, or supported with caveats.

This would make it easier to know (for more than the walk-on-water-gurus) what to patch in more specialized supported and unsupported environments.

People are having massive issues with this process on every distribution, supported or unsupported. Myself, I had trouble with my gentoo installations, and went so far as to install a supported copy of ubuntu and google for help on that, and got to the same basic points when the procedure broke.

How does this work? You can initiate this activity by selecting the "Receive Patch/Maintenance Alerts" link from our Support Home Page, providing your email address, and then, after verifying that we've got the right contact, you can select the product/s you would like notification on by selecting "Confirm Subscription" from within the email confirmation we will send you. To get you started during this initial phase, we've even pre-selected the products you've previously purchased. And, any time you want to change your selection, simply edit your choices by repeating these same simple steps.

We know that you value receiving patch and maintenance release information as soon as it becomes available. Here at GSS, meeting your needs is our top priority!

Enhancement to the online support request experience

Enhancing the Support Request Experience!

VMware Global Support Services is pleased to announce an enhancement to the support request experience. Starting Friday, November 16, the process of filing a support request will be improved. Before initiating a new support request, we will automatically search our Knowledge Base first for a solution. When you select Create a Support Request from our website, you will be asked to input a brief description of your support issue and a selection of all pertinent Knowledge Base articles will be presented. You can choose to review the selected materials or continue on to submit a support request. We hope this process provides many of the answers you require more quickly and efficiently...without having to engage in the full support request process. Meeting your support needs and expectations is our top priority!
Customize screen resolution in Linux guest

For the record, I think VMWare should include this information in its knowledge base or FAQ in addition to what's already written in
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=748
(which also needs to specify color depth)
So, for those like me who need to customize screen resolution to something like 980x715 in order to use as much space as it's available on the physical screen but don't want to see scrollbars:

Open (as root) X11 config file (which is /etc/X11/xorg.conf in some distributions) and add a ModeLine under Monitor section, VMWare identifier with a line like this:

ModeLine "WxH" 100 W A B C H X Y Z
where
W = desired width
H = desire height
A = (W/100 + 1) x 100
B = (W/100 + 2) x 100
C = (W/100 + 3) x 100
X = (H/100 + 1) x 100
Y = (H/100 + 2) x 100
Z = (H/100 + 3) x 100
where / is integer division. Eg, if W = 1234, W/100 = 12.

Take a concrete example, I need 980x715, so my ModeLine should read:
ModeLine "980x715" 100 980 1000 1100 1200 715 800 900 1000

Save the config file and restart X.

Hi VMWare,

It would be good to see the option of joining a mailing list for announcements about security alerts and patches. Can't see how to do this on your website.

Anyone agree?

Thanks.

In order to keep our ESX servers up to date on the current patch levels what is the recommendation? Should one check the VM site from time to time for newly released patches or would one wait for a version upgrade? And would these version upgrades contain all patches needed or would one still need to check the patch site and then check that against your ESX servers?
I have paid for VMware Fusion and updates come often which is good. Its a royal pain to have to enter my info EVERY TIME there is a new update. I PAID and you already have my info. If the update is free, just let me have it without asking for my info EVERY TIME there is an update. Fusion requires a serial number to run. Just require first time beta users to sign up so they can get a serial number. Please don't require signing up EACH TIME there is an update. Its really annoying.

Catch 22 in Create Service Request

I tried to create a service request - I have Complimentary 30 Days Support - and encountered a catch 22. If I leave the Preferred Phone Number empty I get the following error message:
Please fill Preferred Phone Number, it cannot be empty.(SBL-EXL-00151)

If I try to fill it with my pone number I get:
Wrong field values or value types detected in field Preferred Phone Number. Please re-enter your field values. If you need additional assistance, please refer to the documentation.(SBL-UIF-00299)
Next to the field the following help text is displayed: no country code, no extension, 0-9, hyphens and blank spaces only please

I tried a lot of different formats but did not find any that works. The search for SBL-UIF-00299 and SBL-EXL-00151 did not provide any useful hints.

What should I do now? Please help!

I had problems installing VMPlayer and Google took me to the discussion forums. After reading them I realised I had the answer, having had similar problems with another product. Replying to the post meant registering, but after registration, when I tried to reply it asked me to register again. Tried a couple of times. Nevertheless, I'm able to post on this forum. I don't understand.
So I'll just leave here the relevant info: to resolve the installation problem where it fails to write data to the registry, just give yourself full access to the registry key HKLM/Software (use regedit, select the key, right click, choose Permissions, then click Add, enter your username, check Full Control). That worked for me anyway. Why it's necessary escapes me, however.

This not a question. These are two complaints:
Resellers in Germany

Hi!

This is the wrong board for this problem, but since there is no other --- obvious --- way to contact VMware...

I searched a reseller in Germany, Regensburg. I found

Bechtle IT-Systemhaus München-Regensburg
CompetenceCenter Virtualisierung

I could contact them, but afterwards no reaction for now more than five weeks. Every try to contact the person responsible was blocked with various different statements.

Since I would like to buy an upgrade from VMware Workstation 5.5 to 6.0, but there is no other reseller arround Regensburg, could you please give me an address to contact someone who could hand me a reseller handling upgrades?

Thanks in advance!

PS: it is quite a pitty there is no sales address listed on your website!

rescpu.actav and rescpu.runav variables

Hi there,

I'm currently using the VMware API to monitor several virtual and host servers. I found some variables, in resCPU group.

They are described as "This table contains performance counters that measure CPU performance related to average active time, peak active time and average runtime over 1 minute, 5 minutes and 15 minutes."

But I don't understand what are those variables.

I mean, I already have a CPU Usage for host & virtual machines.

What is the difference between "Active" and "Running" CPU (on my host, Active is a bit higher than Running) ?

Is there a link between "Active / Running" CPU and "CPU usage" ? (each variables exists for each servers).

Thanks for you help

Download pages need simple warning notes about any specail requirements.

Installing VMware is like taking one step forward and 2 steps back.

To reduce base system CPU overhead for VM Server I installed WinXP Pro ... wrong .. error ... (@*&#$&(@#&%*
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2079/serverosjf6.jpg

The download page for VM Server needs to be changed to reflect the error message I posted above.

EACH DOWNLOAD PAGE NEEDS PROPER SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS.

Like the ESX server download needs to say REQUIRES SCSI disk if your going to use VM's locally.

ESX Server download needs another marker noting that specail server network card required see list.

I am trying to build this stuff in a lab to see if my company should buy VMware or one of the competitor products ... lord help me this frustration due to the lack of simple warnings about requirements on the download pages are driving me nuts.

And don't give me that "Well that note is on page 4, paragraph 2, line 4, in our 10 page PDF file" Which PDF file .. each product has 3 to 6 PDF files you "should" read before installing ... which basically means .. most people in a lab enviorment are going to say screw it and just install.

Take 45 minutes our of your day .. sit with a senior tech guy .. ask him for a quick list on what is required to run for each product... put those key points on the download pages.

Your 45 minutes will save everyone hours of their time and boost customer experience with the products you sell.

Well now I am off to spend 3 hours rebuilding an OS with all the stupid M$ patches ... THANKS!
where I had to then choose which sub-queue to put myself in...

Why even bother having a live customer support rep when you're just going to put me into a computerized queue system anyway?

Very small gripe... but annoying and easy to fix I'd imagine... The customer support rep should be able to forward me to the correct queue, based on my problem.
contact me, or send me details by email - but doesnt let you specify which details you're after.
TO VMWARE: Serious security issue

Hi,

I am a Gold Support customer and trying to use VMWARE's webpage to initiate a SR. There are several problems I run into:

1. After log in I am presented with my account profile and asked to update it. Sure, no problem. I change the email address and the phone number, save the changes, go back to my profile and check it. Everything is ok. Then I log out, log back in and see again my old profile. I tried it several times. It is simply not possible to change the profile information and save it for the next time.

2. I can, as described above, change my profile temporarily until the next log out. If I do so and open a SR, everything will be fine. But when I try to review the list of SRs, I will not find the newly opened SR. This only happens when I changed the profile in the beginning.

3. From time to time I am being presented with an already filled out foreign SR when I am trying to open a new one. Then just two pages pop up - one blank SR to be filled out by me and an already filled out SR by somebody else. Of course I can see all the personal information of that person.

TO VMWARE: THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG! PLEASE GET IT FIXED ASAP! I do not want other people to be able to see the SRs of my company nor do I want to see there SRs. I want to be able to change my profile information once and forever and not every time again when I log in. And I want to be able to review my SR list and see all my SRs, not only those who have been opened using an unaltered profile.

* there seems not to be any way to file bugs found with VMware Workstation, Player, Server, ESX

* trying to contact VMware via phone, you are left with a huge menue, but no keypress is recognized by the automated system. It doesn't even help to switch to tone dialing: "I could not identify the number you pressed", then starting again telling me about all the options I have.

* trying to contact someone using eMail just gives back an automated message about the mail being received. Some days later a response that I may contact support and pay for filing a bug report.
Any Idea whom to contact and how a responsible person can be reached?

This is Platinum Tech Support?!

Just curious if VMWare Platinum support is the best support? I thought it was, but maybe I'm wrong.

I'm asking because it's pretty lame and I don't want to pay the extra money in the future, if there is cheaper support. When I call in with Platinum Support, they tell me 8 hours call back, you can wait in queue, but it's a long time. Both times they called me back around 7hours 45 minutes later - is this a bad joke?

One callback was 6am (from night before) and was still asleep and the other was 6:30pm at night when I was driving home and couldn't work with the technician. I worked on the email the second guy sent me this morning and got some errors (manual cloning in ESX 3 is pure fun!), so emailed him back this morning, at 3:00pm today there's still no reply. So I call in to get my rep and wait on hold for about 5 minutes, then the dispatch transfers me over....to voice mail. Why the wait on hold then?? So I left a message, and lord only knows when he'll call back (maybe in about 7 hours and 45 minutes)...I also emailed, but no response (except auto response) yet.

It's just an absolute shame that this killer product has such lame customer support. So, I figure I should probably just purchase the lowest tech support package on future purchases, since it's going to take a couple days anyway to get somewhere. Issue started yesterday morning, I might get it handled tonight, loosely 2 days?? For probably a 15 minute fix. What a total bummer! Money in the toilet...
OEM Support

Hello,

We are buying VIN licenses with our servers ( both from IBM and HP )
(of course we add full subscription with the license itself).

As far as i understand, OEM are required to provide support with no additional cost ( besides the license and subscription price ) is that true ?

if so - how can i obtain this support ? - assuming the people in the local branch doesn't have enough knowledge in VMWARE.
from my little experience, the local guys just open up a support case to the international branch, what makes it really hard to handle (breakdown in communications)

is it possible to contact VMware support directly if i'm not interested in local guys assistance ( this is what happens when our guys have much deeper knowledge ) ?

Thanks
Stuff like pens, cd case, t-shirt, polo shirts, and so on could be a good business.
This could be at discounted prices for Best Customers and VMTN power users, moderators, and so on.

What do you think about it?

Previously if you (like me) cant afford to pay for support, so you get the complimentary only, which after a month runs out, Id find a bug and submit it, but the ability to submit an SR without a support contract seems to have gone missing, meaning any bugs I find I wont be able to send in.. Is there any chance this option will make a come back?
I've just realised that we did not upgrade our SnS for VirtualCenter (did ESX and everything else when we went to VI3... argh!) but there is nowhere that I can find what we have covered and when it is due to expire.

That would be very handy as it would have fixed this issue months ago... now I have to try to get it added back on.
VCP 2 certification is officially worthless...?

I'd suggest that VMware more carefully vet people that are in charge of answering questions from the outside world, and that they provide internal training on effective support practices.

Here is a thread from a VMware employee, regarding my attempts to obtain the Workstation copy that is given out upon successful certification.

In nearly 8 years of using VMware, I have *never* been stonewalled like this, much less insulted by a VMware employee. I am very sorry I ever paid the money to become certified, as this is a clear indication of a company that cannot get good people in place to support their customer evangelists.

I have removed this person's name and direct address, for simple decency. Perhaps that could be put into the internal training as well.

<Begin copied text>

David -

I am looking at a copy of the letter sent to you in December. It includes a
code to download a copy of Workstation. See below:

"To download your free copy of VMware Workstation, please visit
https://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/newstore/index.jsp and enter the
promotional code 30H84-HD1FG-1EVUT-2JR89 when you check out. (Please note:
you must hit the "update cart" button before completing the transaction or
you will be charged.)"

That code was for Workstation 5.5, the current version when you achieved
certification. You had 5 months to use that code before the version changed
and you did not. We are not responsible for your procrastination. We did not
have a release date for Workstation 6 at the time, the expiration date was
set when those codes were created with a standard 6 month expiry.

If you chose to upgrade your certification to VCP on 3 then you will receive
a code to download Workstation 6.

*****,

This is perplexing - I have a letter, dated Dec 11, 2006, that says I
am being given a free copy of VMware Workstation. The letter has no
version mentioned, the only thing clearly mentioned is that this gift
expires on June 30, 2007. Yet, your company has not made available to
me the software mentioned up to that point in time. So, either the
date in my letter is wrong, or someone at VMware made an inadvertent
mistake.

So far, is seems to me that you have been particularly unhelpful in
correcting this situation, which is not what I am used to from VMware
personnel. Of course, my prior experiences with VMware were all
before I paid the money to take any certification courses. Is it
normally VMware policy that people who have paid the money to become
VCP are treated differently than normal customers?

I would like to know who I can direct this to, by name, that can help
me. A generic mailbox is not acceptable, as that is what led me to
being pawned off to you.
Sincerely,
I am VCP on ESX 2, # 7278, completed in December 2006.
Seems that when the data collected from the local tools here in italy are sent to the central Capacity Planner Site, only the the English servers are Cataloged the others, the Italian Ones are not cataloged and no information of these servers are showed on the Capacity Planner Site.
It would be great to see some sort of course be developed for Network Administrators. It seems very often that if systems/network teams are split up it becomes difficult to explain what is being done with Virtualization. It also becomes difficult once the phrase 'Virtual Switch' is used. If there were some sort of class with a virtualization overview, but then focusing on what is done for the network pieces that could help some of these discussions.

Workstation 6 RC2- beta support requests closed- how to submit a request?

Hi there,

is there a possibility tp submit a support request regarding Workstation 6 RC2 (beta)?
I have severe problems with that version of VMWare Workstation and would like to have adressed this to someone.
Look at this thread here:
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=83323&tstart=0
VMware Upgrade with Gold Support Subscription

hello,

first of all, i'm reseller, my distributor told me to directly contact vmware, i did'nt find the right email address to send this inquiry to

one of our customers recently purchased vmware 5.5 with 1yr gold support subscription, now he want's to upgrade to 6.0, but there is no info about the support subscription in his account information, the serial number of vmware is registered and can be found in his licensing information, but nothing about the subscription

if the customer enters his serial number into the license administrator, it tells him, that the serial is not associated with any LA (whatever LA means)

could someone from vmware please check this?

if you need additional information (distributor name, customer name, serial) please contact me via private message

best regards
Where to find info for VMWare onsite maint

Our analyst who was in charge of VM-Ware, SAN and servers no longer works for our company. I'm in the process of scheduling classes, but in the mean time where can I look to get a close ball park estimate for onsite maint.

What we need is to have the "C" partition scheme changed on a few servers. The previous Analyst thought the suggested size was way more then what was needed and he built the servers with 5GB "C" partitions.

I have already read online that the best way is to just build a new partition of the size I need and Ghost the old to the new, but that's easier said then done if I don't know where the partitions or tools reside.

Thank you,

Please help with troubleshooting vmware.log files and earn reward points

Sorry for posting this again: I just noticed that it wasn't marked as a question so obviously nobody was interested ...

Quote:

just another verse of the "VMware - support your support crew" song

Also available here - with more examples ...
http://sanbarrow.com/loganalysis.html

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VMware logfiles are very useful to debug problems with virtual machines.

They can be used to restore lost vmx-files and even lost virtual-disk descriptorfiles.
A full log from the last successful start may be enough to recover a broken snapshot-tree.

It is a pity that no information on reading VMware-logs is available.

Anyway - Rob, Oliver and me started to work on a VM-browser - Diskreport-tool and would like to include some trouble-shooting functions as well.

To better understand the current state of a VM we scan through the latest log and
look for strings that are related to a special problem.
Lets look at an example:

"FLOPPYLIB-IMAGE: Invalid boot sector: signature 00, sector size 0, sectors 0"

If a VMware.log contains this line - the VM never got past a black screen at boot - it hangs forever.
This problem occurs when you use an unformatted floppyimage - connected at boot.
Most users will not see a relation here - they just wonder why nothing happens.

A future VM-browser with troubleshooting functions would be able to give the user a hint like this:

You may want to set the floppy to start disconnected.

We believe that collecting some of these "diagnostic-log strings" will be useful for the whole VMware-user - community.

That's why we ask for help with collecting this strings.

If you think that you got useful information please post them here
or here:
http://sanbarrow.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=19

Or send an email with "diagnostic logstrings" to the webmaster at sanbarrow dot com.

Every useful suggestion will be added to a public list : http://sanbarrow.com/loganalysis.html
- and may be used for future trouble-shooting functions of the VMbrowser-project.

Thanks Ulli
Is it possible to extract data from a snapshot - when all else is lost ?

Is it possible to extract data from a snapshot - when all else is lost ?

Yes - it is.
Results may vary - depending on the reason of the total crash ...

Anyway - if you have crashed disks formatted with NTFS or FAT32 you can attach the orphaned snapshot to a fake basedisk - mount it with vdk.exe and recover data.

The procedure looks experimental - but I guess in case it depends much on the recovery of the data - you might not care about this
(Tried it 4 times so far - results varied - in any case we could recover at least parts of the data)

email support

I must have not read the EULA close enough.
One MUST check OK or the product will not load, so why read it closely ?
Any way, I didn't need support in the original 30 day time period, when we purchased it in Jan 2007The ver 6 arrives and it doesn't operate as advertised and I ask for support, and I get ( in the 30 day time period ) email support that is in India. Due to the time zone,( they say ) it takes two days to get an asnwer back and the tech support people ask for stuff that would make an MCSE
blush!
I didn't even know the install program created logs...much less where to find them.
Then they say I need to purchase a support contract to get phone support but I never saw that when the original product was ordered, and since I didn't place the actual order,(purchasing did) if there was options on the VMware ordering web site I wouldn't have seen it...
The product doesn't seem to me to be worth the problems it seems to cause.
Especially without phone support...
Any one have any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks, in advance,
Ken
Weirdness filing a SR these days..

I hope someone from VMware notices this post, i don't know how else to raise the red flag on this one...

I mentioned this to the tech the last time i filed a SR over the phone but admittidly it sounds rather strange and his people probably just disregarded. When i open a the web interface to open a new support request ever since either my company contract was added to this account OR they did the newest upgrade to the Siebel system, i get an already filled out ticket, but the kicker is it's from someone else entirely (not even my account OR my company)

For proof - here's a cut and paste with any specific particulars xxx'ed out:

On 3/22/02, in response to SR# xxxxx, xxxxx sent us a beta version of the Windows Remote Console. Specifically, version 1.5.0-1729. This remote console has resolved many of the problems we've experienced using VMWare. Unfortunately, it appears that this software is going to expire on July 1. This was just brought to my attention. Rather than revert to the older, less stable release, we'd like to continue to use the updated Remote Console. If possible, we'd like to have a version that does not expire. Please e-mail the Remote Console software to me at xxxxxxx, and copy xxxxxxx. Thanks, xxxxxx xxxxxxx
