Not receiving license for 2.0.0
Hello,

From the download page I get this message:

Access Your Email to Activate Your License

Please click the link in your activation email to confirm receipt and gain access to your license.

If you have not received your email within 5 minutes, please check your spam blocker or email filters

I never have received an e-mail with this information. Is there some way to resend? Is there some other way around this? No SPAM filter or blocker running.

Thanks for your help!

Unable to activate license online - 404 error

I am having problems activating the license. If I click at the license activation link in the activation email, then for a few seconds the internet explorer goes blank eventually ending up with a 404 error. I did not receive a 'activation completed' mail. The link that shows the 404 error seems to contain some HTML code:

http://%3cspan%20class=eloquaemail%3epubliceval_licenceurl_base1%3c/span%3E%3Cspan%20class=eloquaemail%3EPublicEval_ESXiLicenceURL1%3C/span%3E&cmp=EMC-ESXiEvalActivation&li=activate

I've tried to active the license here: https://www.vmware.com/account/secure/productRegistration.do but then I have to provide a license code - which I don't have. Is there anybody who knows a work around?

wrong MD5-Checksum for ESX-3.5.0-contents.zip?
Hi,

IMHO the checksum for http://download3.vmware.com/software/esx/ESX-3.5.0-contents.zip, published on 06/16/2008 is 36a764924bd260ef3270945d2299b70d not 97efca6a52a8c13e42a2db6240d2cd2b as mentioned on the site. The checksums for the patches do match.

Am I correct?
Create a user profile for person who frequently contact VMware Technical Support
Dear VMware,

I am working within the Netherlands as a Technical Specialist, in this function we implement virtualization solutions for different customs.

Because the customer are registerd with their own company name, contact information, etc., i always need to supply my personal information separately.

I would like to know if there is the posibility of creating support profiles that can be linked to any customers active tickets.

I would save a lot of time, my personal information is always present and any updates for a ticket can be sent to my business mail instead of the customers registered email adres to which i often have no access.

Please give me your thought about this.

If it's not broke . . . .

Here's a little advice regarding your www.vmware.com website, if it's not broke, don't fix it!

Every time you attempt to "improve" the website stuff gets moved and jumbled together which results in information being harder to find and slower to access. The first such "improvement" you made was with these forums, they you changed the knowledge base and now it appears that you've "improved" the patches and updates section.

In my personal opinion, the site was just fine the way it was, thank you very much.

Now, if you'll excuse me I have to go watch a demo on how to access the downloads sections to get the latest updates and patches.

I've suggestions for next version of VMWare :

1. Hotswap HDD, I would like add new HardDisk while vmware is running, it's same with hotswap HDD in real life

2. Virtual Modem, I would like to trial an application that use modem as media to connect to other computer

Is it possible to do that?

Thanks.

Although I cannot provide specific examples at the moment, I've frequented vmware.com in the past and was constantly being asked to provide login information over and over again. I surf at many sites, and they never ask more than once per visit.

I do recall this is especially true when downloading trials, but it happened elsewhere also.

If I am already logged into the website, there's no excuse to make me re login, and in some cases, I had to reinput my address and contact information which is truly ridiculous.

I hope someone will address this, it makes surfing this site truly an annoyance, which is odd, since the quality of the software I've bought and used daily is excellent.

Hi All !

I changed my emailaddress and was not able to manage this

So I created a new account, but I do not receive any notifications. This may be, because I have filters for the sender and I do not know, which address is used to notify me about changed postings. So I suggest:

show the mail-address which is used by support/forumspost

aplly a testmail-button, so one can verify, that the mail really was send/arrived.

Just my two cents. BTW:The webspeed is very, very slow. Too slow for a rich company
Cannot Download Any Thing: Eloqua Interferes

In the past few months, I have not been able to download any files from vmware, such as virtual appliances, ACE, and so on. I have registered twice, but for reasons that escape me, some Web page interferes. The URL where the failure occurs is http://now.eloqua.com/e/f2.aspx.

I can directly access www.eloqua.com and see that it is a marketing company. I don't know, but more and more marketing companies are black-listed, but I cannot verify if this one is.

I cannot download from vmware on two different physical PCs, one running Windows XP and the other running Vista.

Nor can I download from guest virtual VMs on either machine. VMs are running Ubuntu 704 on the XP machine and Ubuntu 710 on the Vista machine.

In all cases, the same error message apprears, which follows. Please help. I tried to follow some of the instructions, but Vista blocks me from performing some of the linked tasks, even though I ran the app as administrator.

Hi all,

Trying to buy a license for Fusion through online store, from Australia. Mandatory state/province submenu only has North American data (unlike the equivalent menu in account profile, which provides for Australian states among others). Should I just select whichever US state takes my fancy ? Or is there some other advice? Thanks.
Hello,

I have just bought the workstation.

The invoice is quite oversiplified. For the french regulations it should have the full adress and the different company numbers.

From the given invoice I cant actually determine who actually has sold the product.

Could someone give me the information (to get the tax back etc..) ?

Temporary Maintenance - VMware Store?

Can someone please explain to me why the VMware Store is almost always off-line for temporary maintenance?

I find it extremely ironic that a company which specializes in enterprise class, zero percent down, business solutions has to take it's on-line store, off-line on a weekly bases for temporary maintenance.
No direct download link
It's really annoying not having a direct download link for vmware workstation updates. We're all legit on licenses at the company I work for, but I don't know the login credentials so I have to pester somebody else to download the updates when my system update wants them. Or if I remove workstation due to a conflict and reinstall it then I have to jump through all these hoops. Of course using gentoo doesn't help matters for something like this ;-{

I think given the number of torrents out there for the files that it is kind of ridiculous to not have a direct download, since obviously people are downloading them regardless. I suppose there is some legal reason, but I remember before with vmware 4 and 5 that it was so much easier to do updates. I like vmware, but I don't get it why you purposely annoy your legitimate, licensed users.

please send RFC compliant email

Hi!

It`s not for the first time that mails from VMware being accidentally filtereded by our email system.

I`m not that deep into email and spam filtering stuff, but i trust our mail admin when he`s telling, that it`s primary VMWare`s fault that email being accidentally filtered.
Our mail system may be a little bit restrictive, but our spam filtering really works very well, so please send RFC compliant mail and stand to the rules.

this is from the logs:

... reject: RCPT from smtp-outbound-1.vmware.comhttp://65.113.40.141: 550 <vibeta-bounces@vmware.com>: Sender address rejected: undeliverable address: host mail1.vmware.comhttp://65.115.85.35 said: 550 <vibeta-bounces@vmware.com>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table (in reply to RCPT TO command); from=<vibeta-bounces@vmware.com> to=<<<<myname@mycompany>>>> proto=ESMTP helo=<smtp-outbound-1.vmware.com>

Since this didn`t happen for the first time that we had problems with mails from VMware , i`m posting it here.

furthermore, take a look at this one:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=vmware.com

dnsreport telling about some little issue with the mailserver, too.

VMWare EMAIL user groups?

I have been using VMWare Server on OpenSUSE 10.2 for about a year to run a single Windows program I cannot replace with an opensource one.

I have a few queries regarding how VMWare works and would like to learn from others queries. Email posts on the topics I can then store on my IMAP email store, for reviewing at any time.

The initial response has been, from an EXCELLENT user group for opensuse, that I have an RSS feed reader and join in the forums. This is unfortunately a route I would prefer not to take as I receive over 200 emails a day, from various sources, and some of them require replies. This email reading and answering takes me already about half a day using Mozilla Thunderbird. I have learnt a fortune from just lurking on the opensuse list and it is a similar list I am looking for VMWare.

If I need to switch programs to view RSS feeds, the desktop becomes cluttered as it is another program I must remember to use to get information.

Therefore is it not possible to have the forums also distributed, to those who want it, as an email?

Have different email lists ie one for VMWare announcements of new versions where only the moderator can post, and then perhaps a users list for each 'version' ie VMWare Player, VMWare Server and VMWare Workstation etc.

RSS is the way forward, I'm almost sure, but what is also rearing its head is ease of usability with the continued barrage of electronic communication we are subjected to.

Email has been around a lot longer and proven itself for ease of use. I personally do not want to be subjected to another program and something else I need to remember to do when I have my email working perfectly. email allows me to review, reply and possibly store the message and its thread, RSS to my knowledge doesn't allow remote storage of topic threads.

Change to Some Usernames

As we prepare for the new community platform, we've discovered that the upgraded version of our community software does not support the following six characters in usernames: / ? # , & ;

The reason for this is actually a good one: The new platform creates an easy-to-remember URL for each user based on his/her username, and so we must remove the above characters from usernames since they aren't interpreted properly in URLs.

The simple decision is to automatically update all such character to underscore _

I don't think this change affects very many people, and it only affects how your username displays, but I wanted to give everyone a heads-up.

Thanks, Robert

I am once again unable to access news.vmware.com. It's been down for at least a few days.

The last time this happened, it was because VMware had decided that they were no longer going to support the newsgroups. There was a sufficiently large hugh and cry that they reversed themselves and put the server back on-line.

Is the same thing happening again? Is this a legitimate outage, or another attempt to stop supporting the newsgroups? If the former, when will it be back up? If the latter, why do we have to keep going through this?

Hi,

Most of the time I check the progress of the threads I contributed to via my user profile. This also gives me the opportunity to check my status level and see if I'm awarded points for being helpful.

But when I'm awarded points It's really hard to find them, sometimes a user will award points to a post you have submitted a couple of weeks ago.

So my question is, when a post is marked helpful or correct can this be shown in the Recent Messages section of your profile?

Website broken

Hi.
I have sent 2 emails over the last few days (through the website feedback form) in regards to your website and so far no response or fix, pretty poor service considering i am a potential customer.

When i register to get an Eval product key i submit my details and i get the following error:

Internal Error

The VMware web store encountered an error while processing your request. We're sorry for the inconvenience. If you choose to report this error, please mention error code MY16

Very annoying indeed, i would imagine that a large portion of business comes through the website and dont understand how vmware thinks its ok to have the website broken for at least 2 days now with no notice to potential customers.
Surely when errors like this occur they get send to a monitoring system and techsupport picks these up automatically, the customer should not even have to raise this issue.
I hope you can fix this within a reasonable time frame.
Regards,
I can't login to the forums using Firefox. If I click on "reply" then hitting the Sign In button just takes me to back to the same Sign In screen. If I click on "Login" then the Sign In button just takes me back to the forum, but not logged in. Works fine in Internet Explorer.

This is with two Firefox 2.0.0.6 installs on different networks. The only add-on of note on one is Flashblock.
2006 Board Warrior Shirt update

Hey guys,

I know it's been a couple weeks since I've said anything about this, and thanks for your patience by the way.

I've just gotten out of a meeting with one of our systems folks, and we're going to try to automate the shirt distribution. Considering the number of people deserving of a Board Warrior shirt, it's probably the fastest way to get the distribution going without totally derailing all of my other work.

In the next two weeks, we're going to build a web form, designed spefically for people who are deserving of a Board Warrior shirt, for them to be able to submit their shirt size and mailing address. Of course, we do need to put some security measures in place so that people do not submit random requests for shirts, so building the page (although the fields are simple) will take a bit of time and testing.

I will provide you all with an update when I know more about how long it's going to take to get this ball rolling once again. I'll also provide to you guys regular updates on our progress in this manner.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

Forums has incorrect "answer count."

I've looked through a few posts in other topics, and it seems that most of them have this at the top:

"This question is not answered. Helpful answers available: 2. Correct answers available: 1."

But they *all* say that. Even if there are no answers at all. In this thread: http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?messageID=705862 there are no answers yet, but it still says that. Is there a bug in the forum software?

Now I can't even download software from VMware's website because I bought from HP. I click the download link and login and I get this message and am re-directed to HP's website where I have to fill out all sorts of forms just to download a new copy of VirtualCenter. This is a total bunch of crap, thanks VMware for giving me another reason not too buy from HP anymore and further alienating me as a VMware customer. What's next will I have to start using HP's VMware support forums?

Thank you for choosing a VMware product from Hewlett-Packard.
Hi,

This forum is really of great help.I think it could be great if we can have some kinda chat applet where we can discuss case studies and some complex issues.

After I took the training for VCP , i am divoting my maximum time to this forum and trying to learn vmware as much as possible.

Can it be possible to chat with members across globe ??

Thanks
How does this system work?

It looks like you get like 1 point for every post you make... (maybe?).

How many points do you get for a "helpful" and/or "correct" post?

It's not really important, I'm just curious. Thanks.

We are testing a few changes here on the VMTN Forums.

We are changing to the default search behavior from OR to AND. Previously, searching for "service console" was equivalent to "service OR console". It is now equivalent to "service AND console".

We think that this will improve your search results. If you have difficulty or suggestions about search, please let us know in this thread. Note that the forums implement a full Boolean search syntax.

The documentation has not yet been updated to reflect these changes.

All Products Comparison Page?

Spent the last week or two playing around with the free products and reading up on what the non-free and trial products can do. In the process, I found that in addition to the documentation that's spread across your site, a product-wide comparison page might be helpful for VM-newbies to get a grasp on what products you offer and what differentiates them.

Or perhaps a list of diagrams showing the most basic option (running a VM on your own desktop) right up to the the most comprehensive (http://www.vmware.com/files_inline/images/products_vi3_diagram.gif)?

Some items that surprised me along the way -
1. The snapshot-tree in VMware Workstation is excellent for those in tech support roles - I'm surprised you don't brag about this feature more?
2. I couldn't find a straight up comparison of GSX server vs. ESX server (many differences, obviously)
3. There is little point evaluating ESX server on a single CPU with an IDE drive...
4. VI3 is a bundle, not a product per se.
5. The http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/ site is more technical

PS: Since I'm in the webpage feedback forum--
I'd definitely prefer an SSL-secured page whenever providing information - standard practice, I would have thought. Sales-related and forum-related information request pages are all currently insecure.

I have not been on these forums for very long but I notice that there are a lot of topics regarding VCP certification scattered across various forums.

I think it would be usefull to have all VCP related posts in a single forum, not only would it help candidates (thats me) find info. It would also clear non related posts out of other forums.
Other than that so far these forums are a great resource.
Idea on how to make Forums even better

Hey guys,

So we have novice, enthusiasts, experts, masters, etc right?

I am only a couple points away from master now and I am trying to go after the vcp this year. Despite having a respectable level on the forums I was thinking how much studying I want to do to be prepared for the vcp test and even more so for the job that I do. While I predominantly hang out in the Strategy and Planning forums I haven't put as much effort in the other areas of discipline, and I think I could really benefit from doing so.

You know what I was thinking would really make this virtual landscape even better?

Instead of the ladder approach that we have right now, where a person can spend all their time in one functional area. What if there was a way to create and also ENCOURAGE people to have good working knowledge of many different areas of the virtualization landscape?

What if there was say a Black Belt level on the forums? This might mean that a person has a certain amount of Points from all the disciplines. Maybe white belt level is something like 5 points in each and every forum location. Maybe the next level is 50 points from each and ever level and so on.

The reason I think this would be a great way to structure the way these forums work is because someone who has knowledge and experience from many sides of the house can arguably give better advice because they take into account more than what is just on the surface of a question, or an answer.

Additionally, I know how much I love to go after the next icon. If I knew that I needed to have knowledge of other areas to move up, I wouldn't just hang out at my favorite stomping ground, ie Strat and plan. I would be checking in at many other areas as well. And, this cross training would make me more valuable in my job. Being able to answer questions, being able to suggest strategic solutions to help the business I work for do things better faster cheaper is the real name of the game, right???

I love the forums because they are incredibly powerful, I am suggesting the next logical evolution of this incredible tool.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Respectfully,

Requesting Vi3 Eval Licenses

Why are VMWare VI3 Eval licenses not sent after you request to download an evaluation version of VI3 and it states you will be receiving an email shortly?

Also how come after sending four emails, two the same address a week apart and two emails to sales requesting an evaluation license we have not received responses after waiting over 3 weeks.

We are not blocking emails since we received an email with license keys after signing up for Lab Manager, and we receive all the regular junk mail from VMWare about their product offerings but they wont send you an email with Eval licenses when a customer wants to make a legitimate evaluation and purchase. Upgrading from 2.5.3 to Vi3.

If the service is being offered through the web site with no indication or mention that one has to CALL, then you should not have to CALL to receive an evaluation. Likewise one would expect a timely response to 4 polite emails requesting assistance in the matter.

Defaultly checked: "Mark this topic as a question"

Hi Guys,

I suggested this before in another thread, I would like to see the "Mark this topic as a question" checkbox defaulty checked.

Almost all the threads contain a question and I constantly keep telling the people to read this first: http://www.vmware.com/community/help.jspa#questionrp

I personally get a bit sick of this because it keeps me from earning any helpful/correct points and ignoring the people that don't mark wouldn't be the right way IMHO

Cheers,
Search is inadequate?

When I tried searching for threads I participated in, only one of them showed up.

Does the indexing mechanism search the whole content of the thread, or does it index the user name separately from the thread content? In any case my old threads should still be available.

Unless there as has been some purging of old indexes it must be broken

Remove the OLPC virtual machine posting as there is no VM image to download

I am all for the OLPC project, however I am a bit upset that someone put a bogus OLPC VM posting on 6/16/2007. If you follow the link it goes to the OLPC website, but nowhere on the site is there are a place to download the VM image, if one even exists. Please don't allow people to abuse the posting of new virtual machines with bogus virtual machines that don't even exist strictly for the reason of advertising their site (even it is for a great cause like the OLPC).
VMTN URL advertised via forum spam - Please help!

One of your users is spamming forums around the internet advertising their product. A user named "V-Kernel" is spamvertising the URL http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/881
They use an automated posting robot to simultaneously post to many forums. Google for the text "Virtual Appliance for Capacity and Chargeback reporting" and you will find it. The forums at Insanely Mac have been hit multiple times.
Can someone please threaten these guys with delisting or otherwise make them stop?

I had a older forum account with I user name that I signed up for in a hurry and decided to open another account with a new user name. I found that it was not possible to re-use the email address that I had used for my original account, so I used a different email address for my new account. I would however like to close down my old account, so that I can use my main email address as used with the older account, with the new account. I would therefore like to know how I can do this or how I can contact VMware in order to make this request?

Better private messaging in forums

Hi there,

I think it would be nice if private messages would automatically go to my email. This is similar to how ‘watch this topic’ works. Right now it’s difficult to use private messages because people do not monitor it and there is no notification icon or anything that will tell me if I have a new message. As the result, I often cannot reply on time and people who I try to contact reply too late.

Thanks,
I want to bump this up again.
In the last weeks there were some really good posts containing useful FAQs / HOWTOs - especially for new users.

One good example of this is the following from Eric http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=81121

I know that the User Solutions forum is there to serve this need.
Unfortunately new users tend to search for a FAQ / HOWTO section instead since they are used to it from other forums.

Wiki beta test..

Hi,

I'm looking for a few community folks to beta test a wiki environment I'm currently building as part of a extended community effort for VMTN.

I will be running a small beta program, allowing users to login, read, edit and submit content on a wiki that will be hosted on vmware.com. If you are interested in engaging and providing me feedback, send me some email at:

 enielsen@vmware.com

I am looking for people who engage in the field (customers or SE/FE's) who can upload real content items. (scripts, FAQ's, readme's) The site will collect and allow people to edit content.

I will be somewhat selective, so let me know if you are love wiki's, or you have operational experience in the field.

Thanks

Can't submit support request on non-Windows browser

Isn't this a little silly? Attempting to submit a support request from my Firefox browser in Linux gets me an error message that I need to install an addon that will allow Windows Internet Explorer to run, which of course won't work on Linux. Personally, I could whip up a browser-neutral support submission CGI in a couple of hours work. Why can't VMWare?

Hi all! The Forum rules say that when you achieve 50 points you should receive a T-Shirt from VmWare... I've never received mine... Do You???

By the way... a T-Shirt or a Coffee mug would be great too :P

So please tell me if anyone of you ever received anything from vmware!

How about an update of the spell checker

It's funny that this tool doesn't recognize many of the VM related terms, like
VM, VMotion, DRS, SMP, vSMP, virtualization and even VMware.
