Memory Consumption seems odd
I recently got a new host and put up ESX4 on it and created a windows 2003 x64 server with 2 vprocs, and 4gb memory. the only application i've got running on this server is an instance of Trend Micro Worry Free business security. the odd thing is the vsphere console is logging that there is excessive memory usage on this server. ~97% at all times. Now when I check the server itself and our monitor system it tells me the server is actually running with 3GB's of memory free, and a normal size page file. the Vsphere console tells me that it's using 4.00GB Private, 3.92GB active, and 0MB shared, swapped, ballooned, or unaccessed. I've got the server setup for a reservation of 4GB, witha limit of 6GB. Is this normal or do I have a problem. I doubt it's relevant, but my other Host is running ESXi4.

We help those in need so when we are in need we'll be helped. Isn't that what IT people are for.

Passthrough Abit AirPace PCI-E

Hi,
I'm having some problems with my Abit WiFi card. I bought this specially to passthrough this device to a VM. I had to buy a PCI-E card, because i have one device in PCI slot, and i couldnt passthrough second PCI device to other VM.

The situation looks like this:
1. Abit AirPace works fine only when is connected directly (without ESXI server) to OS(checked on Windows XP and Linux).
2. After passthrough this device either to a Windows/Linux VM, i can install it but i cant find any networks (led on that device shines normal). In Abit airpace software in statistics i see that all TX packets are dropped.
I also tried to make a ad-hoc network, and try to connect from my laptop but it doesnt see this network.

Is there any chance to make it working properly?

Regards,
Enquiries on Snapshots Management

I have multiple snapshots. I assume these will slowdown my system right?

Removing snapshots take a long time and I often receive Operation timed out when removing snapshots. What will be the fastest way to remove multiple snapshots?

Delete the oldest or newest first?

Does suspending or shutting down the VM helps?

Will taking or removing snapshot when VM is booting up or shutting down cause any damage?

I also notice that my first snapshot do not have a "play" icon. What does this mean?

Thanks,
Improvement in Backup Speed related to separate vlan for backup.

Hi,
We have created a separate vLAN for backup in our infrastructure. So we have configured the same on our physical switch as well as added an extra NIC on each of the physical as well virtual servers to facilitate the backup process on different vLAN.

For understanding, the configuration are like

Each physical esx server is having four NIC.

NIC 1 - vmnic0 - Virtual switch - vswitch0 - VLAN 3
NIC2 - vmnic1 - VLAN8 This one we have created for storage and backup purpose
NIC3 , NIC4 - vmnic2/vmnic3 - Team - Trucking on ( All VLAN accessible ) - Assgin to virtul machine.

Other details :

VLAN 8 Backup 255.255.252.0

Now the question is although Backup Speed has been improved for physical machines significantly but in the case of virtual servers there is no improvement.

I request someone from the community to advice me on the same.

VMware-Tools fail after SLES10-SP3 Update

Hi,

VMware-Tools work fine in SLES10-SP2 guest even with VMXNET3-NIC. But after update to SP3, there is no chance to start the tools, neither with FLEXIBLE-type nor with VMXNET3-type. It always fails with the following message:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Starting VMware Tools services in the virtual machine:
Switching to guest configuration: done
Paravirtual SCSI module: failed
Guest memory manager: done
Guest vmxnet fast network device: failed
VM communication interface: done
VM communication interface socket family: done
Guest operating system daemon: done
Unable to start services for VMware Tools

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The only way to get the nic working is to change the adapter type from VMXNET3 to FLEXIBLE before start updating. The pcnet32 module loads properly in the new environmen, the vmxnet3 module doesn't. What's required to get it working

Thanks in advance

Multicore Processors & CPU Scheduling

The ESX 4 manual reads:
"In undercommitted systems, the ESX CPU scheduler spreads load across all sockets by default. This improves performance by maximizing the aggregate amount of cache available to the running virtual CPUs. As a result, the virtual CPUs of a single SMP virtual machine are spread across multiple sockets (unless each socket is also a NUMA node, in which case the NUMA scheduler restricts all the virtual CPUs of the virtual machine to reside on the same socket.)
In some cases, such as when an SMP virtual machine exhibits significant data sharing between its virtual CPUs, this default behavior might be sub-optimal. For such workloads, it can be beneficial to schedule all of the virtual CPUs on the same socket, with a shared last-level cache, even when the ESX/ESXi host is undercommitted. In such scenarios, you can override the default behavior of spreading virtual CPUs across packages by including the following configuration option in the virtual machine's .vmx configuration file: sched.cpu.vsmpConsolidate="TRUE"."

My questions are:

How long is a ESY system considered as "undercomitted" and how do you get aware that it changes from "undercommitted" to "overcommitted"?

How do youfigure out that there is significant data sharing between virtual CPU's? Are there some real world examples/experiences like "this application XYZ is known to have significant data sharing between CPU's"?

Thanks, unknowing AWo
Thin Provisioning not working for storage vmotion

I am working in a storage migration project of VMs.In the environment we have VCS ver 4.0 and ESX 3.5 servers. We need to move all the VMs from symmetric to clarion storage. So i did the storage vmotion(GUI) with thin provisioning as a option to move the VMs during pilot phase. After the migration completed, the VM disk till showing Thick format instead of thin.

Also i have moved the VM from one datastore to another datastore in clarion(same storage box,but different lun) using storage vmotion with same option and its working fine. The VM disk showing Thin.

Can anybody help me why thin provisioning is not working when moving to different storage (symmetric to clarion) box using storage vmotion?

Default Shares Values Weird
Yohoo!

I have a ESX4 running with vCenter and a couple of VMs.

All of them are set at the CPU and memory resources to "normal". But they all have different values for this "normal". Some have 8192, some 1000 and so on. Obviously they are not all entitled to the same resources.

I set them now with the PowerCLI all to a custom level of 1,000 but my question is how I can reset the default values to the "real default" ;)?

The VMs are all created on the same physical box under ESX 3.5 (but probably different U1,..U2 and so on). And it already was on ESX 3.5.

Anyone a clue?

VC shows Nics are down but can't be?
Hi all,

I've got ESX Server 3i 3.5 installed on IBM HS22 blade on Bladecenter E. The HS22 has 2 broadcom NetXtreeme II BCM5709 NICs. VC says that both NICs are down, but it can't be? Because I'm able to ping and in fact, I'm managing the host from VC, aren't I?

Is there just a GUI issue or I should be worried about it? Any work around?

Thank you.
Hi,

We just bought a new blade with two nehalem processors. I installed esxi 4 and created a new virtual machine to host 2008r2 64bit. When I started the installation an error stated there are no 64-bit compatible processors. Please help. Even when do you think vmware will fully support 2008r2?
The ESXi documentation links to a Guest OS Guide PDF that includes OS X Server.

Is this a supported configuration?

I am looking for a solution for small scale software tesitng that can virtualize both OS X Server and Windows Server on the same machine.

Get-Cluster appears to be an expensive query, on the VC, CPU usage goes as high as 95% (for vmxd.exe) when using get-cluster, otherwise it is fine.
Is there any workaround to avoid this, or an equivalent SDK method ?
Need a powershell script to collect esx patch info
Hi,

Iam looking for a powershell script which collects result of "esxupdate query" for all esx host version 3.5 in the Virtual center version 2.5 and exports to CSV file.

It should take input as virtual center and collect all the ESX host info, log in to esx hosts, run esxupdate query and update the csv file with results.

I got the basic code from other script. i have pasted it below. This just collects the results for esx server given and need to alter the code for requirement as given above.

$servers=”server0″,”server1″

$account=”root”
$password=”password”

$servers | % { $a=plink -pw $password $account@$_ “esxupdate query”

$server=$_}

VM won’t boot with vmdk attached

We have a Windows 2008 VM
that runs on an ESXi 3.5 server. It has two VMDKs attached to it: the
boot drive and a 1TB data drive. The boot drive VMDK resides on some
DAS drives on the server. The data drive sits on an iSCSI datastore.

We have been trying to migrate the VM to an ESXi 4.0 server. To save
time we only converted the boot drive to the new ESXi server with the
idea that we could attach the 1TB data vmdk later to the VM. The VM
boots without the data vmdk attached. However, when we try booting the
new VM with the data vmdk attached it POSTs but won't boot. The console
shows a black screen; no Windows loading bar.

Does anyone have an idea why the VM would boot without the vmdk
attached but won't boot with it attached? I really don't want to
convert the VM again with the boot and data drive since it will take 7
days to complete.

ESXi 4 Whitebox Build Idea - Comments/Suggestions?

All,

I have looked at the HCL and read a few posts. I saw someone using an M3N78 in another post but on newegg it looks like the best choice I found was the M3N78-VM (close but not identical I suspect)... Also, it's a micro atx so not sure if that would matter much as long as I found a micro atx case.... I am trying to keep the costs down (thus the choice to use older Phenom instead of Phenom II). I haven't spent too much time on this and would gladly swap any/all parts from those listed below based on feedback. Basically, I'm looking for a cost effective Quad Core/8GB/Hardware RAID 10 capable ESXi 4 machine... This is for a home lab setting so Uptime/Supportability is of no concern as I am just looking for something that will let me install/run ESXi4 on the cheap

ASUS M3N78-VM AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 8200 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131318

AMD Phenom 9750 2.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor - Retail

(I would get two of these kits)
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Retail

3ware 9650SE-2LP KIT PCI Express Lanes: 1 SATA II Controller Card - Kit - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816116041

If these components totally suck, don't hesitate to tell me... I'm not in a huge hurry and just want to select good components at a good value. I obviously still need to add drives, case, PS, etc... Just looking at core components to build on for now...

Windows Activation question

I have almost managed to make the conversion from an XP machine to an iMac.
During the installation of the Mac, the Windows startup requires Windows Activation.
Although the Mac has full connectivity to the internet, Windows direct Activation comes back with a "Cannot connect to the internet" message.

The key code will not accept my PC license (it contains ...OEM..) in the second field and gets rejected. I have tried putting a valid Enterprise license in but that also gets rejected.
Questions - does the installation on Fusion 3 from a PC machine to a Mac require a new license? Can one use an Enterprise license instead?
Is there a simple way to get this done without phoning M'soft (2 hr hold delay)?

This all seems like basic stuff, but so far I have seen no info whatsoever from VMware on the details of completing the installation on a Mac.
Thanks in advance

High CPU utilization after upgrade to ESX 4 Update 1

I have just upgraded 2 hosts (IBM HS21 Blades) from ESX 4 to ESX 4 Update 1 and now I'm experiencing extremely high CPU utilization. Previously the utilization on each host would be around 10% but now after the upgrade it is around 80% on each and now all of the VMs are running very slow as a result.

The only change that has been made is that I downgraded the local hard disk drives from mirrored 500GB 7,200RPM SAS drives to mirrored 73GB 10,000RPM SAS drives and performed a clean install of ESX 4U1 on each host. As the 14 VMs are located on a SAN disk array I thought this would only improve the performance of the hosts.

Has anyone else had a similar issue or a potential fix?

Cheers,
Heavy mouse lag when using VMWare player through remote desktop
Hi everyone!

I have VMWare Player installed on my office computer, which I frequently access from home using remote desktop. The OS is Windows XP on the host, as well as on the VM. Since I updated to Player 3.0, I experience very heavy mouse lag when ever I use the VM. This was never an issue with the previous version.

Any ideas?

What happened to VMWare & the website??

I used to remember its was easy to browse and navigate VMware
website, even selection a product for download. Unfortunately the amount of cognitive
effort now required to simple download a trial of something like VMWare Workstation,
or even the free player and try get it to do as it states on the web page +"Create: Use VMware Player to create
virtual machines with the latest 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Linux"+,
is mind boggling.

Even posting this message I had to navigate through another
'user set up process' and select from a drop down with a bazillion entries for
the desired forum.

Sorry but not impressed!!

hi friends,

is it true that we can update vmware patches through WSUS. when i
read about the WSUS in wikipedia, it was clearly mentioned that WSUS
updates only windows products like SQL, MS Office etc. but one of my
friends was telling that it can also do patch management for VMware and
Linux. enlighten me please.

VI client loses connection to ESXi (3.5 update 4).
Hi all,

I've got several ESXi servers in remote offices. One is running on an HP DL385 and second one is on Dell 2900. Both run ESXI 3.5-update 4, build 158874.

The problem is that every time i connect to Dell box over VPN - VI client loses connection in about 1-3 minutes. Error message pops up and says " The VI client has lost the connection to the "IP" server. Do you want to return to the login dialog?" I connect to both machines with VI client 2.5 build 119598.

When i'm on a local network - VI client runs fine, when I'm coming over VPN - i lose connection every single time. Yet, runnign over VPN works for HP box at a different site. We've replaced firewall/VPN appliences, installed new switches, changed management NIC, new cables.. the problem still stays.

Before the latest patch both machines were on 3.5-update 3 and had the same behaviour, so I don't think it is a bug in the new release.

Does anyone have any idea on what to try?

PSOD after U1 upgrade by updatemanager
Update manager install timed out during remediate of the first host that I tried to update.

Now I get a PSOD on the first part of boot sequence, right after scheduler is loaded. The server can boot into troubleshooting mode, but I have not had the time to investigate yet.

Any suggestions before I try another host?
Page Fault exceptions since upgrading to vSphere 4

I've filed an SR about this but I'm still working through the 'maybe it's your hardware' stuff with the support reps.

We upgraded one of our ESX 3.5 hosts to ESX 4 and ran for a couple of days with no issues. Then we upgraded the rest of our cluster (6 machines) this past weekend. I have since experienced 7 PSOD lockups on 3 of the machines, all identical. I have attached a sample PSOD.

My understanding is that I'm supposed to be able to retrieve a core dump image from my VMKCORE partition using esxcfg-dumppart, however when I try to do this I get the following:

Single slot coredump
Error running command. Unable to copy the dump partition: Couldn't find a valid VMKernel dump file. Dump partition might be uninitialized.

I am not sure how to initialize the dump partition. These were set up automatically by the ESX installation software. I have gone to each VM host and issued a 'esxcfg-dumppart -a'. I figure either the partition is still not initialized, or ESX is actually not writing to the partition like it says.

We used to have similar issues (random machine check exceptions) with 3.5, but these were fixed by a BIOS update.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with ESX 4 ?

All system components are on the HCL except for our NICs - these are integrated Intel Pro/1000 EB controllers which were on the HCL for 3.5U4. We don't have any other cards to use, so if this is the culprit we'll not be able to upgrade to 4.0.

Hi there,

Somebody told me that is not necessary to set a broadcast when we change the IP address on a ESX Server.
So, instead to type: esxcfg-vswif -a vswif0 -p "Service Console" -i 172.23.206.61 -n 255.255.254.0 -b 172.23.206.254
We can just type:esxcfg-vswif -a vswif0 -p "Service Console" -i 172.23.206.61 -n 255.255.254.0

Is it true or no? And what the reason.

Cheers for your feed back

DPM - How do I remove ilo settings?
Hi Folks

Probably a silly question but I am unable to remove the IPMI/ilo user settings I had previously configured in Power Management. We are using blade servers and want the configuration to be independent of the blade hardware i.e. are using boot from SAN and server profiles so that esx hosts can be moved to different physical blades as required. The problem with using ilo to restart the host is that the ilo hardware is bound to the blade (for obvious reasons) which means it would be easy to end up with DPM trying to power up the wrong host if blade configs are migrated. Am testing WOL as an alternative which works well however I am not able to remove the Power Management ilo user details as I constantly get an error message when I remove the user details ("User name cannot be blank.") and the vi client wont make the change.

Probably a simple answer but cant find it in the doco or knowledge base.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

This can be difficult in my case becase the VC is in a VM.
Tasks hanging in vCenter 4.0U1

In an effort to migrate to vCenter 4.x from VirtualCenter 2.5 I did the following:

1) Disconnected all Hosts in VirtualCenter 2.5 system
2) Powered off VirtualCenter 2.5 system
3) Copied the VC25 database to a new 64bit SQL Server system
4) Installed vCenter 4.0 U1 on a new app server and pointed it to the new 64bit SQL Server instance.
5) Updated the database and did all that with no issues.
6) Removed all the Hosts that I didn't want managed by vCenter 4.0 U1 from the vCenter system and did likewise for the VirtualCenter 2.5. All hosts are in one or the other systems, not both.

Everything appears to be working just fine from the surface. After several hours of running the vCenter 4.0U1 system started to have tasks that DRS would start or would be started manually that would never finish or be acted upon. Example: Migrate virtual machine was initiated by the system (DRS) at 2pm today. I found it at 8pm today still sitting there waiting to start or finish or do something. Example2: Pushed the "Power On" on a VM that was moved to a new LUN and it is "In Progress" by System for the past 30 mins. I finally started it manually from the service console.

If I stop and restart the vCenter service, the tasks are cleared and if I reinitated them they take off immediately. I have no option to cancel the hung task from the vSphere client at all.

Anyone else see this or have any suggestions on what is going on? Where might I look to see why its hanging or cancel these manually without restarting vCenter?

We are using vcb FullVM to backup our VMs now cmd.exe has the copy speed limitation to about 1GB per minute.

Can the use of Microsoft PowerShell break this limitation?

VCenter 2.5 Networking advice

I'm Currently running VCenter Server 2.5 with 3 hosts. I am currently noticing that the VMKernal (ISCSI) even though the switch has 2 network adapters it seems to be only actually using one adapter. I have configured the storage paths to Round Robin to test it. I am just wondering if anyone would have any other suggestions for evening out the network card usage.

all of my host currently have the following network setup

Service Console on production network with 1 adapter

VM network with 3 adapters on the production network

Service Console (2nd) and VMKernel with 2 adapters on a separate isolated physical switch for ISCSI

Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated

I should probably add that my ISCSI target has 3 network adapters attached to the physical ISCSI network switch and that VCenter sees 3 paths to each datastore

VMware - FIX FUSION 3 - NOW!!!!!!

I LOVED FUSION 2.0 - I ranted about it to 100's of people. Best thing since sliced bread is what I used to say.

Now I upgraded to Fusion 3 and it's TERRIBLE. Performance is a joke. I use this in my daily work and if I'm lucky it still works. I can't rely on it now for my demonstrations. Shame. Shame. Shame.

Being a user of Fusion 2 since it was released, I can say I rated the s/w as a 9 or 10 for enterprise use. Now I rate it as a 3.

I will be doing a Video this weekend of how bad it is and will post it online. Since no one from VMware seems to bother to read these forums or comment. I suggest they see what people said about united Airlines when THEY didn't listen...
ESXi 4 on Dell PE2950
Hi all,

i've a DELL PE2950 running ESXi 3.5. I want to upgrade to ESXi 4.

Looking at the available downloads, I saw a specific version customized for DELL HW.

What are the benefits of this version? Is it suggested for my HW?

Is this updated as frequently as the 'base' version ?

thanks, regards
SQL server 2005 performance issues

We recently imported a physical machines that was running our production databases. The physical machine had dual 4 core Xenon processors, our VMware license only alows us to use a max of 4 Vcpu's and thus I configured it in such a manner. However, the performance is TERRIBLE. I know it has nothing to do with disk I/O as the VM is running on a SAN with a R10 configuration and 10 heads.

I did some research and read that we should look at the CPU ready time, which was VERY high. I lowered the number of Vcpu's to 2 and performance has gotten much better. I dont understand why performance is so bad with 4 Vcpu's and was wondering if there is some setting I am overlooking or that needs to be set.

I am not a DBA, so I have no idea when it comes to configuring SQL and any specific SQL settings. Any ideas what I should look into? Where should I start. HELP!??

ESX 3.5 Host Hardware Replacement Job

Hi all

I am about to perform the following two tasks. Please could you review and make comments as appropriate?

__Task One__

3 x ESX 3.5 Servers in Cluster. All licenses in use. Need to replace all 3 x servers with new hardware.

I have heard that you cannot add additional servers to existing clusters when no licenses exist, i.e. you can only run eval licensing on single servers. What I propose to do is put 1 x host into maintenance mode and let all VMs migrate off. Remove the server both from virtual center and physically. Install the new server giving it the same name/IP address and add to the cluster. Let all VMs migrate over to the server. I will use the same method for all servers over a period of say 3 days - i.e. if we have a PSOD we can put the old server back in etc.

__Task Two__

Setup a new Cluster with 2 x new hosts and migrate VMs from 2 x ESXi FREE boxes running on local storage.

What I propose to do is to setup the new cluster with datastores etc.. install convertor on VC, power off the VMs on the ESXi FREE boxes, run convertor and migrate them from local storage over to SAN storage being hosted in the new cluster

Cheers

Guests on ESXi 4 shutdown

HP DL 380 dual QC's w/12GB RAM

I just did my first install of ESXi 4 today on this brand new server. I then installed a couple 2k8r2 DC's and a 2K8 FS to mess with. Everything went together quite nicely with vSphere.

Then I fired up about half a dozed vm's (on my workstation) that I had build some time ago with Sun's Virtual Box and started joining them to the new DC's (on the ESXi server). My local workstation (with vSphere running) bogged down hard- as to be expected, and a few minutes later when I couldn't join on of the vm's to the domain, I noticed that all of the VM's I had built in ESXi had shutdown! There were plenty of resources available on the stand alone HP.

I shut all the Sun VM's down. Restarted the ESXi VM's and repeated with the same result. When firing up the VM's with Virtual Box on the workstation, vSphere goes into a "not responding" mode and after the workstation cpu's stop being pegged and I go look at ESXi it shows that the VM's are off.

Looking through the Event log on the servers shows no 6008 event!! The "Events" tab in ESXi shows that the VM was shutdown, and the NIC time shows that the VM has booted, in addition to me being able to see the boot up process from the console.

What is going on? If vSphere stops responding, does it shutdown the ESXi VM's? Even if my workstation, running vSphere were to crash, I would expect that the VM's on the ESXi box would continue to run.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you,
How do I downgrade to Fusion 2.0?

I have more problems with 3.0 then I care to document here. They have all been reported, so I will not bother repeating them. So... Anybody know if I can downgrade my VM's to 2.0? I do not have a copy of 2.0, so I need to find a link to download that from.

I trusted VMware implicitly, after years of great service and quality control. This upgrade has been a major PITA for me. I use Fusion all day long, and I have lost a ton of productivity thanks to the glitches in 3.0.

The computer is directly connected to the Lutron processor with an Ethernet cable (inverted). If I connect using a windows machine, it works in an instant. But with Fusion, I can't. I just don't understand. In the software it gives me the option to "update network adapters" but nothing appears. The Static IP address for the Lutron processor is 192.168.250.<processor address>. I've connected with a true windows computer using a IP address like 192.168.250.10 for example, but I had access to a network adapter.

I bought Fusion for that very piece of software. Nothing else. i like my Mac as it is. But now I'm very frustrated. Please help.
Allocate more CPU to Guest...

First my setup:
Mac Mini, 1.66 GHz Core Duo, 2GB
VMware Fusion 2.0.1 (128865)
Windows 2000 Pro SP4, 512MB, single virtual CPU, 3D disabled

I'm trying to allocate more of the host CPU to the guest. When Windows' Task Manager shows that it is consuming 100% of the CPU, Activity Monitor is showing what I would equate to maybe 25% CPU usage (one core is maybe at 50%). Videos that play flawlessly in Safari on the Mac, hop, skip, jump and look pretty bad in general. Most times I start playing a video the guest window goes completely white, then back to normal.

Is there a setting within Fusion that will allow the guest to consume more of the host's CPU resources?

Thanks,
I've got a quesiton about the HA and Vmotion a extreme stauts in VI3.5.
Supposing I had two ESX Servers who enable HA and Vmotion. The source esx suddenly goes down when a vm is running Vmotion from source esx to destination esx. Will the Vmotion continue or cancel? Is there a conflict between Vmotion and HA?

WS 7 major problems
Hi,

Support has aksed me to try WS 7 to overome a problem in 6.5.3 with guests not being locked into memory.

The problem still exists in WS 7.

Furthermore, WS 7 introduces two new serious bugs:

Some USB devices won't connect to guest OS. In my case, my iPhone cannot connect to my Windows XP guest.

Moving the mouse in and out of a guest creates a delay which makes guests difficult to use.

#2 was present in 6.5.2 and earlier. It was fixed in 6.5.3 but the problem returns in WS 7 (not as bad, but bad enough to be very annoying).

It's time to look at Open Source solutions, I think - I'm tired of paying for product and support and not having problems properly fixed.

regards,

Trouble deploying vDR appliance 1.1
I have downloaded the new version of vDR 1.1 to do the upgrade. I am following the release notes for upgrading the appliance with a virtual disk. I uninistalled the data recovery plugin and installed the latest version. I have shut down the current appliance and removed it from the inventory. I am trying to deploy the new ovf file and get all the way through the wizard until the "Specific hosts" section. When i select any host in the list i always get "host did not have any virtual network defined" error.

I have tried to download the iso again thinking the iso may have been damaged. Same result. I have also tried and renamed the old appliance and followed the steps in the release notes but this didn't help either.....

I have a distributed switch, vSwitch0 and vSwitch1.

Any suggestion? Can anyone think of anything else that i am overlooking?

ESXi 4 locks up every couple days

I am running a whitebox and when I first got it up and running, it was running flawless for weeks. It eventually started locking up and becoming absolutely unresponsive. I can't ping the host IP, I can't log in with VClient, and I can't even get the console to respond to keyboard inputs.

I first thought that I had too many VM's running on it, so I looked at the historical performance graphs in VCenter Server (Eval Version) and it was all low usage of everything (RAM, CPU, Disk). I have upto 5 VM's running (4 2008 64bit and 1 XP 32bit). I started moving the VM's to a VMServer and had it down to 1 VM on the ESXi host. I dont know if I was impatiant but it seemed to run fine for 5+ days so I started moving VM's back to ESXi one by one (using the free converter). It seemed to run fine for a bit, and now it's back to locking up about once every day or two. It had at one time gotten where it was locking up multiple times per day.

My next step was I thought maybe having the two network ports plugged in, something was getting confused as to which interface was used for management without actually doing any additional configuration on the Vswitch. Although I setup the one NIC as the management interface, I figured I try unplugging the second NIC. It's still locking up

I found one other thread about the same type of symptoms, but that persons problems seem to be locking up every couple of hours, at a minimum. I'll go anywehre from 12 hours to 2-3/4 days. My VM's are not resource intensive by any means. I have an AD server with one user, two Exchange servers with one mailbox, and an XP machine doing some media sharing to my network

My hardware is as follows:

Supermicro C2SEA
Xeon X3360
8GB RAM (if someone wants to know specifically what, I can find out)
Intel Pro gigabit PCIx NIC
LSI 3Ware 9690 Raid card
***5 1TB HDD's in raid5 with two volumes configured on that raid to split it in half
***I had to use the update host utility to install the 3ware drivers from their website
***I have all VM's installed on one of the two volumes, the second volume is empty
74GB 10kRPM WD HDD - this is where ESXi is installed, nothing else is on this datastore

I have not done anything much different than default when setting up ESXi or the guests or the network. I have also not done anything for resource allocation because I have not taken the time to learn how to set that up correctly yet. I also have the host attached to an eval version of VCenter Server.

I have looked through the logs and nothing shows up. It doesnt even recognize the fact that it's become unresponsive. The only way to pull it out of this "state" is by doing a hard reset. I also lose all connectivity to the VM guests too.

If anyone has any ideas, maybe I missed something or there is a known issue with one of the pieces of hardware I am using, I'd greatly appreciate any guidance.

Fusion 3: Windows 7 Upgrade from XP Pro - No Drives Found

Trying to install Windows 7 using an upgrade disc. Have XP Pro installed currently and using Fusion 3.0.

I am booting from the upgrade disc and after selecting custom install, Windows 7 asks me where I want to install Windows. It is not finding the partition with XP on it, saying "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Windows 2008 R2 + ESX4 + vCenter Client Console = FREEZE

Hello,

i reproduced this several times now and also found a coressponding thread in the microsoft newsgroups, ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsserver2008r2general/thread/bc0f3c12-eda7-440d-a228-213a8d0b956c ) so here you go:

Install a fresh W2008 R2 to an ESX4 machine, do this all with vCenter Client Console, not with reomte RDP. Add the role
Remote-Desktop-Services to the newly created W2008 R2 machine, reboot, after reboot when the machine tries to finish
the changes (after logon) it totally freezes.

Now the interesting part on that:

If you log on via RDP after the reboot (oh yeah, you urgently need to turn rdp on before reboot!!!), then
the installer of the role WILL FINISH!!!

Now how strange is that?

Any ideas?

best,
VMWare 3 and Windows 7 terribly slow?

I recently installed VMWare Fusion 3 on my Intel iMac and created a guest using the new Windows 7. The Mac is dual core and has RAM of 1 GB. I set the memory of the guest as recommended at 523 MB and reserved disc space of 40 GB. As it turns out, Windows 7 is that slow that operation is hardly possible. Moreover, restarting Windows or restoring the guest system take ages. Can somebody give me a hint at what I might be doing wrong or is my hardware setup not ideal?

Hi,

This is a reprint of an earlier post.

I have XP running in Fusion 2 on a new IMAC with 4GB RAM and MacOS 10.5.8. When I try to print a document from an application in XP, I only get the first page.

It is as if there is a setting to print 1 of
1 somewhere inside the Fusion setup.

Printing is normal on Mac side. XP prints through Mac.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Can you upgrade XP to 7 with the Student Upgrade in VMware? I can't get it to work...

Hey guys,

I'm having a heck of a time with this.... I've got XP on boot camp partition, as well as a VM created from it. I've just purchased the Windows 7 student upgrade from MS, burned the ISO to a bootable disk, and now I'm stuck. I have a 13.3 MBP (5,5) running Snow Leopard and VMware Fusion 3. I tried booting my entire computer from the DVD, only to have the Windows 7 installer tell me it doesn't have the right drivers. Alright, so I boot all the way into Snow Leopard, open up my bootcamp partition with Fusion and I can't get it to boot from the DVD there, or in the VM either. So I'm stuck, what am I doing wrong / is there a way to even make this work?

Thanks!

4TB SAN Storage Issue
Dear All,

Recently my company just purchased an IBM BladeCenter H with 4GB Qlogic FC (QMI2572) and DS3400 (4TB). During the storage adding in ESX4, under Current Disk Layout, available capacity is only 90.85GB instead of total 4TB capacity stated.

I applied all the ESX4 patches, together with the latest Qlogic driver from VMware website without succeed.

Is this a known issue in ESX4 or rather than a configuration issue that I didn't aware of.

Now I'm going to installl ESX3.5U4 to see if the similar issue exists.

Your advice is highly appreciated.

Cheers!

Upgrade to 3.0 'broke' a programme

I've searched the forums and not seen a problem like this before.

I use Fusion to call up my bootcamp partition which I mostly run for CAD work - For heavy stuff I boot into BootCamp but for small tweaks and mods Fusion has worked just fine until now. Upon starting Rhino 3d all seemed well until it tried to load the toolpath creator plug in (madCAM) where upon I get the following message

'1 Mesa 7' is not a valid integer value.

This worked fine in Fusion 2 and I have no problems when I boot into BootCamp so by my limited knowledge it has to be a problem with version 3?

I've attached the .tgz file and my hardware profile as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, for now I've downgraded to version 2.06 and all is well again.

We have a usb over ip device which is working properly for all devices except the dial-up fax modem. Apparently this is due to the modem being a winmodem requiring software processing. Can someone please post the exact model of a USB external modem known to work in ESXi using USB over IP?

Storage space used by VMs linked to a template
We find that the storage space for VMs linked to a template grows pretty fast when users do things like application installs, copy builds, source control updates etc. I understand that for such large writes we should avoid cloning.

Can we do following to limit the growth rate of the delta disk?

Suppose we create a template with base OS installed. Now a user creates a configuration off the base template and deploys the VM in Lab Manager. The user then adds a new virtual hard disk (this disk is not on the template), configures this disk (say to E: drive) and does all large write activity on E:. I understand that all of E: will be consumed from the shared storage pool all at once. But after that will the delta disks grow at the same rate as it would if E: was configured in the base template?

Lun Replication manual failover steps ?
Hi, I have gone through various sites about DR - Lun Replication. I have kind of idea about this. But I need to be sure that the steps that I am taking is right.

We have 2 datacenter - One is LA and other is NY. We are going to use SRM and also manual failover (because the LUNs are getting replicated). We dont want to put too much of money on SRM. So we thought we can use the Lun Replication and register the VMs at the other site.

Steps that needs to be taken, if they are going to be bi-directional site

1) Let us say if LA Datacenter has a disaster and we need to get up and running at NY what needs to be done ?

Break the replication

Not sure if this step is right, please tell me if this is wrong - On each ESX host in the Cluster where these VMs are going to poweron I will first have to EnablResignaure set to 1. (Do I need to this on all the nodes in the Cluster OR just one node will do the trick?

After the resignature, I will scan for the new Luns and then Once I get that I will register them to my VC server and power-on the VMs at NY.

Is this sufficient OR there is more to this? Also, how can I get the VMs back to LA?

VMware Server the correct solution for the following scenario?

I have an ancient Eopen document server with SQL 2005 running on a Windows 2003 server. Because of the version age of the Docs software, failover servers and backups are very difficult. In order to make it work the backup server has to have the same name and pathing of the primary. Obviously this means it cannot be online while the primary is active. The current server also serves as the role holder for the AD domain.

Money is tight right now. I've been asked to figure out a way for us to have a backup server at a low cost. (the old backup server is dead and out of warranty) Vmware seems like the way to go. Can I image this server (on the fly?) and then mount it as the domain FSMO holder, answering DHCP, DNS and security and have it serve as the Docs server plus SQL if my primary dies? What would be my best choice for a Vmware product?

It's a newbie question. I appreciate your time in answering.

Vmware Player 3 doesn't compile modules on Ubuntu Studio 9.10

There's some bad karma for this system and Ubuntu with this release.

After the installation of the bundle and launching Vmware Player, the modules building fail for vmnet and some other components. I've seen a patch for a previous version of the player on RT Kernels, but I'm yet to find a fix for this one.
This is an Ubuntu Studio 9.10 i386 with the released 2.6.31-9-rt kernel running on an Asus A8Js.
Cold Clone: IBM Blade Server - Hangs "Please wait"

Good Evening Everyone,

I have a slight problem. I am trying to cold clone an IBM Blade Server HS20. The screen shows the convertor hanging saying please wait. I injected both VMware LSI driver and Netextreme II Broadcom drives for the NICs. Can anyone tell me what i am missing? I am leaning toward the idea that I may have a wrong LSI driver. I would prefer not to hot clone it.

Thanks
Disadvantages with running VMware Workstation (7) on a Xeon rack server?
Hello,

On my company we are planning to run VMware Workstation (7) on a Xeon based rack server (the next generation Xeon, i.e. Beckton/Nehalem-EX, with 8 cores, planned to be released in Q1 2010), and then access all these virtual machine guests (Windows based, both of the server and desktop kind/flavor) by separate direct Remote Desktop connections to them.

I have had a very hard time trying to find out if there are any (big or small) disadvantages with this approach?

We don't want to use Vmware Server for this, because its features (e.g. regarding snapshots) are inferior to those of VMware Workstation, and neither do we want to use ESXi, because we still want to run Windows as host OS on the server.

Is VMware Workstation our best choice then, and will there be any noticable disadvantages? I think it feels like there's one product missing in VMware's portfolio, i.e. namely a server product with all the features of VMware Workstation, which still runs on top of another host OS, what am I missing?

Anyway, again, the main question is:
Is this plan of ours stupid, and in that case how should we better solve it? Is there really any advantage using VMware Server instead of VMware Workstation in this situation, and in that case more exactly what?

Any input and/or answers will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I am having an issue when converting a windows 2003 SP2 server using VConverter standalone version 4. If I just conver the C:\ drive it converts fine, but the instant I include the D:\ drive, or try to adjust the size down, it fails. Can anybody see what might be going on, as I haven't been able to figure it out in looking at the logs.
kernel compile error for VM Player 3.0 install w/ Ubuntu 9.10
I recently performed a fresh install to Ubuntu 9.10 (realtime kernel). I attempted to install VM Player 3.0 (though received the same errors w/ 2.5) and received the following errors upon the kernel recompile. I was running VM Player 2.5 w/ Ubuntu 9.04 previously with no problems.

Any advice is appreciated.
data cannot be read or written / vmdk failed
Greetings,

My host is a MB Pro with OS X - 10.5.8, the guest is Windows XP - SP3, VMWare Fusion 2.0.6 and I'm looking for help with two areas, 1) Challenges creating a reliable backup VM 2) What could cause the vmdk file to crash.

This morning and last night when trying to copy my VMware Fusion file to an external hard drive as a backup copy, I recieved the following message, "Finder cannot complete the operation because some data cannot be read or written."

I have no idea why this particular VM file cannot be copied. I was able to copy an earlier version a few weeks ago.

Additionally, I have woken up twice this month to the following message:

"Operation on file my vmware fusion path and file name.vmdk failed. If the file resides on a remote system, please make sure your network connection and the server where the disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach the media. Choose Abort to terminate the session. Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system."

When I choose > Abort, then I would get the following message:

VMFusion cannot sync with disk before abort. Disk my VM file name and path may be inconsistent.

I had to re-build my VM the last time (September) to get past the "failed" error. Since the upgrade to VMWare Fusion 2.06 (yesterday), this has not occurred, but I now cannot make the backup copy on an external hard drive.

What suggestions do you have?

Thanks in advance,

Problems with upgrade a virtual machine from version 1.0 to 2.0
I have a old VMware server version 1.p virtual machine which works fine, I have now installed Wmware 2.0 and trying to use my old machine, but with no luck.

accourding to the manual - it should be possiblle in the status area to choose "upgrade machine", but my wmware can not recognise the old machine and there are no upgrade link at all - only a remove link.

In the status field the Virtual Hardware Version only yields : "Unknown virtual machine".

What can I do ?

The Old version is VMware Server 1.0.1 build-29996 and the new version is VMware ServerVersion 2.0.0Build 122956.
"Ghost vNIC" VMWare Tools and Virtuasl Hardware V4 to V7 upgrade.

I have recenetly upgraded ESX 3.5.0 (build 163429) to ESX 4.0 (build 175625) I am beginning VMware Tools and then Virtual Hardware upgrades from V4 to V7.

I'm aware that a new vNIC is created and the setting copied over from the old. It also appears it renames the vNIC as a result. All appear normal behavior for the upgrade. However, I see another anamoly that I'm unsure is expected behavior. If not expected what am I doing to cause this:

Every Windows guest I have upgraded VMware Tools on Viirtual Hardware on works fine technically but, when I go into the TCP/IP properties of the new vNIC and then just click "OK" to get out, I get this dialog box (NIC TCP-IP message.jpg attached).

I understand this is a result of the old "Ghost vNIC" and I understand how to remove it to eliminate the message but, if this isn't normal, I'd like to find out what I'm doing to cause this and if it can be avoided. If specific to my environment or upgrade process, I'd like to understand more before proceeding.
I'm looking for a solution to create and run images of Windows Server 2003 x64 Enterprise Edition and OS X Server 10.5 for small scale software testing.

Can I do this on a late 2009 Apple Mac Mini with VMWare Fusion 3?

I've heard that there are firmware limitations on this device that prevent 64-bit operation.
I use Fusion 3 with Snow Leopard and Windows 7. The microphone in my MacBook Pro is not working in Windows but works in Mac. I use Skype and similar programs. In the device manager in Windows, the isight camera has a yellow mark next to it but the camera is working. Speakers work fine. Help please!

Interested in virtualization, lots of questions.
Hello! I've heard about the trend of virtualization for a while from my friend in the IT field, but I've only now begun considering ways that I could implement it to benefit my situation. One of the great features, to my understanding, of virtualization, is a fuller utlization of resources. Computers have always had a difficult time of parsing their jobs to different cores, or different processors, so, if you were to divide up the processors of your computer between different tasks, you could make much more effecient use of your processing power. Well, that's how it seems that it would work in my head. So, here's my first question:

Okay, when shopping for a computer, spending extra on a faster single processor will net greater end result that spending extra on two slower processors. But in this scenario, let's say someone decided to splurge and get the extra speed and extra processors, and ended up with a top of the line 2.93Ghz 8 Core Nehalem. That computer will be faster than a quad core 2.93Ghz, but definitely not faster than two quad core 2.93s running side by side. So, if one was to divide that 8-core computer up into two OS X Server virtual machines, and run fully processor intensive tasks on each of those VMs, would it equal the power of the two separate quad core machines? (minus of course a hopefully reasonable performance drop from the processing used by the original operating system and vmware application) Furthermore, would making four VMs give even greater productivity increases due to further spreading of processing? It makes a lot of sense to me that it would. Am I crazy, or am I just starting to realize the possibilities of virtual machines?

Okay, if that's true, then that opens up a lot of doors. One very powerful computer and four old computers could become four pretty powerful computers with a cumulative processing power much greater than that of the host machine. Expendature on multiple machines could be greatly lowered, and upgrade costs would be consolidated. So, if that works, my next question would be how remote client machines could access these virtual machines so users can give commands to them. The obvious answer would be VNC, and I have been experimenting with this a bit. So far though, I'm unable to find a zero-latency solution. I have a 4Gb fibre network, so I'm not worried about bandwidth saturation. As of yet, no VNC applications that I've found send more than 1 MBps. JollysFastVNC works pretty well, and is the best I've found, but still not whating I'm hoping for in a sitatuion with no bandwidth limitations. I understand that these applications are generally geared toward WAN access, but is there a remote control option suitable for zero-latency LAN situations?

My next concern, assuming that the distribution of processing in VMWare Fusion works the way that is should, is the distribution of other resources. One particular area that I'm curious about, and hope to test soon, is storage. Hard drive speed is commonly a bottleneck in computers, and purchasing RAID cards, enclosures, and fast drives to remedy this is a big expendature, especially if it has to be done for every system in your environment. Well, if all of your computers, or four of your computers, were virtual machines inside of another computer, then the expendature on setting up a fast RAID volume could be much lower, hypothetically. This is the way that I imagine it, please tell me if it works like this:

Your host machine is running it's OS on it's internal drives, but it's using an external SAS RAID card to connect to a much faster array. Let's say assume this RAID array has a read and write speed around 800 MBps. This is the array used to host your virtual machine operating systems. If all four of the virtual machines are being accessed for a lot of hard drive access simultaneously, will each of them have access to 200 MBps, or will the array be bogged down by the multiple requests, causing slower access speeds for all users? Furthermore, if all four virtual machines are sitting idle, using 5% of the drive speed each, and suddenly one gets a command for a lot of hard drive access, will it be able to use the remaining 85%? If so, this makes virtualization a very attractive solution for providing fast hard drive access to multiple computers.

Am I mistaken in thinking that RAM is assigned to a virtual machine instead of being shared the way that a hard drive would be? I've seen my friend set up a virtual machine before, and I remember him choosing an amount of his system RAM to dedicate to that computer. If that's the case, then one would probably need to max out their RAM for the host machine, but it would be worth it to not have to purchase three more equally powerful computers.

The last piece of hardware that I have a question about, and the one that I'm most worried about would be the video card. The video card would have to be shared by all virtual machines, right? I'm unsure if video card processors are multi-core these days, so I don't know if they would benefit in productivity by being fed manually threaded tasks. If they're not, would the video card get bogged down if it was receiving graphic intensive tasks such as phot editing on two or more virtual machines? If so, could installing multiple video cards remedy this? Would these video cards need to be assigned separately to different virtual machines, or are GPUs more effective at threading tasks than mult-core processors?

Alright, I'm sorry for all of the lengthy questions, but I'm very excited by the possibilities created by VMWare. Any replies at all would be very welcome. Thanks a bunch!

Processors to run 64 bit Guest OS
Folks

I am in the market to buy a new PC which supports both EM64T and VT which are the requirements to run 64 bit guests. I guess the BIOS should also have an option to turn on VT and this piece of information is somethings hard to find

I have the link to the processor finder which spits out details if the above is supported but is there a list maintained by VMware as well which has the processors that support 64 BIT guest OS's? My only other option would be to get a good deal on a PC, quickly check up specs and look up the community boards to see if someone else has installed 64 bit guests

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLBF4

My other question would be - from a VMware perspective, should I be lconsidering any other specs or features of the CPU? I want to make sure I can run ESX, Vmware server, etc in the foreseeable future

Thank you

VMplayer stuck at downloading extra components

I have recently upgraded from the RC to the full version of vmplayer 3.0 but i am still having the problem of updating vmplayer 3.0 with the necessary vmtools.

Does anybody here encounter the same problem and hopefully there is a fix to my predicament.

Whenever i try to download all of the components of vmtools, its stuck at the window where its vmplayer is trying to connect to the update server.

This problem was also present in vmplayer 3 RC and i thought it would go away after upgrading it to the version 3 but it seems it hasnt.
