I'm thinking you're right; it would be easier to start from scratch with VMware. The Converter is NOT working for me.

Am I missing something?

Do you folks know how EASY IT IS to convert a Fusion VM to a Parallels VM? It's like -- click on a button and wait a few minutes.

While these intstuctions are wonderful and detailed, it seems as if it would be easier to build a new VM from scratch with reinstallation of OS AND of all software.

Yikes!

Here's the log: Looks like Snapshot creation failed. driver = vss
Vsnap does not have admin rights.
In Parallels, I am logged in as 'Owner' which is an administrative user.
So I don't know what the issue is.
I do; I will upload it when I get home.
I failed to mention that my Parallels C: drive is NTFS.

Is it possible that exporting to a Mac shared folder is the problem? I recall seeing this in another thread.

Is VMware converter able to export the converted drive to the same drive is being converted?! (seems like this would cause a recursive problem!)

I am having the same problem: When converting a Parallels WinXP VM via VMware converter, I get the message "ERROR failed to take snapshot of source volume."

My Parallels C: drive is 32GB. I have 68 GB free on my Mac HD.
VMware converter was installed without error.
I am an administrator in Parallels.
Volume Shadow Copy Service is Started.
There are no foreign characters anywhere. (The destination path is \\.PSF\.Home\Virtual Machines)

A few more options ..

- Was VMware Converter installed without errors?

- Are there any accented or foreign characters in the Source path, usernames, VM names, or passwords for this Windows installation or account?

- Are you logged in as local administrator account?

-Is Volume Shadow Copy Service enabled?
In XP, Start > Run > services.msc will open Services window.
If Volume Shadow Copy is not showing as running or started, right click on it to start it. (Manual is OK setting for the rest of it).

When it's running, run Converter again.

If those fail, what error messages do you get in Converter?

I have followed this and actually got the guest machine to boot up in VM. After I installed Tools, however, it repeatedly gets to the point of booting up, asking for an XP CD-ROM, giving me a warning about the screen settings, then crashing, and then booting up on its own again. Over and over.

I'm only trying to build a Windows XP VM from Parallels.

I don't have USB Overdrive installed.

I know how to switch focus from Mac to VM with ctrl-cmd and clicking outside the window.

The alt-tab and alt-F4 keyboard tricks allowed me to install VMware Tools without the mouse.
I've successfully converted my image from Parallels to Fusion, but I need to do the last bit, which is to update the HAL. Is there anyway that I could boot the CDROM so I could do the HAL reinstallation?

Update: Found a way to delay the BIOS screen and set it at BIOS.
It sounds as if you have the same problem with VMs converted from Parallels and VMs built natively under Fusion. Is that right? If so, the problem is likely to be unrelated to the conversion process.

I wonder whether you have USB Overdrive installed in Mac OS. That has proven problematic for folks in betas of Fusion.

Anyway, I myself have successfully installed VMware Tools without using the mouse before, although it's a little irritating. It helps to know that you can always click ctrl-cmd to get input focus (keyboard and mouse) out of the VM, and clicking with the mouse inside the VM window puts keyboard and mouse focus back to the VM.

I assume you're building a Windows VM, so it also helps to know that you can use alt-tab to move among windows, and alt+F4 to kill a window that's in the way. Most buttons have an underlined first letter, so you can choose the button just by hitting the letter. Using these keyboard tricks, I have successfully gotten VMware Tools to install, at which point the mouse starts working and life is good.

I'm having the same problem. I've converted my Parallel VM using Converter 3.0.1. When I book up the new VM I can click in the window to give it focus, but then my cursor will not move. I'm using a MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.4.10.

I've tried creating a second VM in Fusion but the same thing has happened. I've not seen the long list of drivers installed, but instead I'm hanging on a "welcome to new found hardware wizard" window with no way to cancel out of the window.

I have never done this before, but here is Brian's note from earlier in the thread:

--------------------------

If, someday, you decide you want this VM to have two virtual CPUs , there are two pieces of work you'll have to do:

1. Change Fusion's definition of the VM to have 2 CPUs; and
2. Change Windows's Hardware Abstraction Layer to the ACPI Multiprocessor HAL.

The first one is easy; it's just a matter of going into your VM's settings dialogue while it's powered off and changing the button for number of CPUs from one to two. The second one is easy or hard, depending on which flavor of Windows you have. It's hardest for Windows XP and 2003: you must re-run Windows's installation mechanism on top of your existing Windows install, choosing the new HAL during the process. Here's the Microsoft KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299340/

The tricky part of this process is that the window from which you choose the new HAL is only two lines high, and nothing on-screen tells you that the window is actually scrollable. Use the arrow keys to scroll.

-----------

Hope that helps.
Please answer the following and don't worry I won't complain if things go wrong--))))

IM willing to re-install on top of my exsisting windows VM and then select the appropriate HAL. BUT:

do I re-install win xp pro while actually running with in windows? In other words do I start up fussion, boot into my win VM and then insert my XP disk and go to set up or do I:

I install from scratch from Fussion with out running my win VM?

Thanks again!

I did get the msg that considerable hardware changes
I'll handle that issue later but if you have any
reccamendations, IM listening--)))

There is nothing we can do about Windows wanting reactivation in this case. Our virtual hardware is much different and Windows in many cases will require activation again in the case of conversion. Since this is a one time conversion and reactivation, it should be relatively straightforward.

IM confused as do I re-install win xp pro while
actually running windows? Or do I install from
scratch from Fussion and if thats the case would'nt
that defeat the purpose of what I just went through
with cloning my parralles image so I woul'dn't have
to reinstall windows?

There are some ways to update the Windows HAL to support this, but it is very challenging to update the HAL and it may or may not support multiple processors.

If you want to use dual SMP, ACPI, and the such, you are MUCH better off creating a new Windows virtual machine in VMware Fusion to get a reliable, proven install set to use these Windows features. With Windows Easy Install, this is fairly quick as long as you have a Windows CD and valid license key.

Best,
Hello Brian,

I just migrated my parrallels image as per your instructions above. All went as stated.

I did get the msg that considerable hardware changes have been detected by windows and now a request to reactivate. One huge reason why I left windows--))) I'll handle that issue later but if you have any reccamendations, IM listening--)))

Now, here's where IM hung up:

Just as you stated windows doesn't want to shut down all the way, so I powered down for now manually via Fusion drop down menu.

Here's my question. I want to utilize both my CPU's as IM running an intell core duo iMAC.

When do I re-install windows, at what point do I attempt to re-install windows and any step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

IM confused as do I re-install win xp pro while actually running windows? Or do I install from scratch from Fussion and if thats the case would'nt that defeat the purpose of what I just went through with cloning my parralles image so I woul'dn't have to reinstall windows?
If your migration fails at 2% with this rather generic message:

[code]ERROR: Failed to take snapshot of a source volume.
Possible causes include not having any NTFS volumes on Windows XP or Windows 2003 source systems, and not having enough free space.[/code]

there's one other possible explanation that is not mentioned in that message. Right-click on My Computer, choose Manage, and drill into Services. In the resulting list of services, "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" and "Volume Shadow Copy" must both not be disabled.

If either is disabled, right-click, choose Properties, and set its startup mode to Manual (instead of Disabled).

well, everything runs fine now, except i cant install
the vm-tools cause they wont start if i click
"install". nothing happens

After you've chosen Virtual Machine -> Install VMware Tools from the Fusion menu, go into your VM and right-click on My Computer. Choose Explore. Do you see an entry for a CD-ROM drive, with volume label "VMware Tools"?

If so, chances are that CD Autorun is disabled in this Windows install. Not a problem; just open up the CD-ROM and double-click on Setup.

If not, Windows doesn't think it is equipped with a CD-ROM drive. Go back out to Fusion's menu, and look under Virtual Machine -> Settings. Make sure that this VM is equipped with a virtual CD-ROM drive. If not, add one (the VM may have to be powered off to allow you to add it).

Anyway, when Fusion is definitely presenting a CD-ROM drive to Windows, Control Panel -> Add Devices should provoke the discovery of the drive. Rebooting Windows will be necessary.

ok, so you have migration from parallels to vm ware
fusion working for everyone except windows vista
parallels vista vm install?

There aren't many options, and no good options. VMware Converter does not yet support converting Vista, and I cannot announce when that'll happen. I was about to suggest using one of Converter's competing products, like Leostream P>V Direct, but that one, at least, does not seem to support Vista conversions yet either.

It's possible to do a conversion operation by hand, but unless you're a fairly advanced Windows system administrator, this will take more time than just building a new VM.

User reeven wrote:

thanks for that converting guide but i have one big problem:
i converted my vm from parallels v3 and tried to use it in vmware
rc1 but whatever i do, i cant use my mouse or keyboard. here is
what i tried so far:

systems: macbook black, winxp, parallels v3 -> vmware RC1

use external keyboard/mouse
use internal keyboard/trackpad
use vnc (activated/deactivated remote access before converting)
send keystrokes
start into safe mode
force usb-fetch
del/re-add usb+sound in vm-config
install vmtools (did not work since i cant install them without input device)
upgrade vm (did work but still no response)
convert to external harddrive/shared folder (made no difference either)

well ... i have no idea what next. can anyone help me out there?

Before I get into the details of your question, I wonder whether you followed the beta4 conversion instructions (where you originally posted) or these. Just to be on the safe side, I suggest discarding your previous conversion attempt and starting fresh with these instructions in this thread if so.

Although there's nothing I can think of in the beta4 instructions that would cause your problem, you'll be happier with the VM that results from the RC1 instructions.

OK, now to your question. This may seem silly, but I have to ask: did you click with the mouse inside the VM window? When you have a VMware VM without VMware Tools, that's what you have to do to give it input focus. Then, to get focus out of the VM and back to the host, you press cmd-ctrl. (The same deal applies to Parallels VMs without Parallels Tools, except for the fact that they use ctrl-option instead.)

You should see the message at the very bottom of the VM window change. When your VM does not have input focus, a message will say "To direct input to this virtual machine, click inside the window." When your VM does have focus, that message will read "To return to your computer, press ctrl-cmd."

Converter, assuming you downloaded it within the last few months, will be version 3.0.1, which injects a temporary mouse driver into VMs it makes. (To check the version, you can fire back up your Parallels VM temporarily, launch Converter, and choose Help -> About.) At least one person on this forum somehow accidentally got 3.0.0, which did not inject the temporary mouse driver, so he had no mouse until he got VMware Tools installed. It is possible to install Tools using the keyboard only, but it's a pain.

When the VM boots for the first time, be sure to let it sit there and discover devices until it announces "Okay! Time to reboot!" And only try to install VMware Tools after the reboot. (Why? The installation of VMware Tools employs a virtual CD-ROM. But before that reboot, Windows may not think it has a CD-ROM drive.)

If the problem persists, be sure to post (on this thread!) what happens when you try to click to give mouse focus to a VM. Also, tell us what version of Mac OS you're running (I'm not aware of any problems in this regard with Leopard, but support for it is experimental presently).

My remaining question is related to "one core"
comments at the end of the process. I have a dual
core MacBookPro. I've left the config as a single
CPU on the assumption that either on chip core will
be used as appropriate to provide the "single cpu"
support to windows. Is that a correct assumption?

That's exactly right. Just as Mac OS schedules processes onto whatever CPU core it likes, it will also schedule the virtual CPU in your virtual machine onto whatever CPU core it likes. This scheduling behavior happens many times per second and is invisible to the guest OS inside your VM.

If, someday, you decide you want this VM to have two virtual CPUs, there are two pieces of work you'll have to do:

I've researched what Parallels Tools do in a Fusion VM: the answer seems to be "not much."

The service portion of Parallels Tools runs as a process called "toolsrv." For my migrated Windows XP VM at least, taskmgr shows it taking 0% of CPU time and about 2 MB of memory (most of which is presumably paged out). There's also a service called "cohrence" that apparently only starts if it finds itself in a Parallels VM. Anyway, you can disable both these services using Administrative Tools -> Services with no ill effect.

Parallels Tools's other main payload is device drivers. Device Manager suggests to me that none of those drivers is actually mapped to any hardware in a VMware VM.

User billearl is correct to point out that, if you want to remove Parallels Tools using Parallels's uninstaller, you must do so before running VMware Converter. I just find it bothersome to use any application (Converter or any other) in a Parallels VM without Tools, just as it's bothersome to do work in a VMware VM without Tools. My aims in the migration instructions were simplicity and ease of use, so in this case I sacrificed some tidiness in favor of those ends.

In case anybody's wondering: removing Parallels Tools from a VM before migrating it to Fusion makes it neither easier nor harder to bring that VM back to Parallels. Parallels Transporter always reinstalls Parallels Tools as its last step in migrating a VM to Parallels. (Of course we hope our customers will not feel the need to do that.)

Here's an important clarification for this technique. Although I demonstrate it here importing a Parallels VM, it can import a wide variety of physical and virtual machines. There is no need to use Parallels Transporter as an intermediate step in the process of getting a Windows installation into Fusion.

I should have mentioned the most common cause of Converter failing: if your C: drive is formatted as FAT, not NTFS, and if there's no other hard drive on the system. Converter needs 300 MB of free space in an NTFS to do its work.

Fortunately, this problem is easy to work around. Just use Parallels Desktop to add another small virtual hard disk to the VM, say, 350 MB in size. Then, from within Windows, format it as NTFS and assign it a drive letter. When you get to the spot in Converter where it asks you which drive letters to convert, you can exclude the drive letter for this small temporary disk.

Yes, Converter will fail on some VMs that have had Parallels Compressor run on them. Specifically, if you allowed Parallels Compressor to delete Windows's driver cache, VMware Converter won't find the files it needs.

Other folks in this forum have reported that, for Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems, if you grab DRIVERS.CAB and SP2.CAB from C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 from another XP SP2 machine and put them into the same folder on yours, this solves that particular problem.

You should bite the bullet and build up a fresh VM anyway
(with virtual SCSI disk.) The performance benefit is worth the hassle.

RC1: Instructions for migrating Parallels VMs to Fusion

Here is an updated method, with plenty of screenshots, for
moving a virtual machine from Parallels Desktop for Mac (build 3118) to the
current VMware Fusion beta
(Release Candidate 1, build 50460). The technique uses VMware Converter 3.0.1 (build
44840),
which is a free download and is free to use in the manner required here.
I have tested the method with virtual machines created both under Parallels Desktop 2.5
(build 3118) and under 3.0 (build 4128).

If you saw the beta4 or earlier versions of
these instructions, read on; this version results in a tidier virtual machine.

Limitations of this technique:

Like VMware Converter itself, the technique only works with Windows XP,

2003, 2000,
or NT4 virtual machines. It doesn't work with Linux virtual machines, and it

also doesn't
work with Vista VMs.

Your virtual machine must contain an NTFS file system with at least 300 MB
of free space.

If your copy of Windows was not licensed with a volume-license key, it
might demand to be reactivated when it is booted up inside VMware Fusion.

Downloading VMware Converter, although free, requires answering a small
number of marketing questions.

This technique requires some type of file sharing between your virtual
machine and the host Macintosh. You may use either a network share or
Parallels Shared Folders. On my iMac, I found using a network share faster;
your performance may vary.

Regardless of how you plan to communicate between your virtual machine and your host Mac,
make sure that your Mac home directory has a Virtual Machines subdirectory. Create
one now if none is present yet.

To use a network share, you must enable Windows Sharing on your host Mac.
Click on System Preferences in the Dock and choose the Sharing tool. Enable
Windows sharing, and ensure that your Mac login is shared.

Notice the text near the bottom of this window:

Windows users can access your computer at \\192.168.130.96\brice

This sentence shows you your home directory's network path, also known as a
"UNC path" or a "whack-whack path". These instructions will use this network path later to allow VMware
Converter to write virtual machine files into your Mac's home directory.

Now log into your source Parallels VM as Administrator or as a user with

administrative privilege. Here's a screenshot of my VM after I logged in.

If you plan to use Windows file sharing, confirm that your virtual machine
can mount a Windows file share from the host Mac. Otherwise, confirm that
Parallels shared folders gives you access to your home directory.

You are now ready to download VMware Converter into your virtual machine.
Download Converter from http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/ and run the installer.

When you launch the installer, you'll see this screen:

Disregard the text under the lightbulb. Use of
Converter in the mode it describes requires buying an enterprise Converter
license, which is not necessary for this purpose. Just click Next.

Proceed to accept the license agreement, and do a typical (default)

installation.

When you run VMware Converter for the first time, it will invite
you to type in a license code:

You don't need a license for this procedure. Just click Continue in Starter Mode.

Launch the Import Wizard.

The first step is to specify the source machine. Tell Converter that you
want to image a "physical computer," even though you plan to image a virtual
machine (the present one).

In the resulting screen, pick "This local machine".

When you click "This local machine," the Authentication boxes get grayed
out. Converter assumes that you are running with administrative privilege.

Next Converter will query your source machine for what disks it has. My
Parallels VM has only one disk, its C: drive.
That's the one I want to clone.

In the next screen, tell Converter that you want to create a "standalone"
virtual machine.

Now Converter will ask you for a name for your new VM, as well as where to
write the VMware virtual machine it'll create from your Parallels VM.

Choose a temporary name for the virtual machine; this example uses
"Imaged from Parallels VM." There will be an opportunity to define
a new name later that reflects the purpose of the VM.

If you
enabled Windows file sharing
on your Mac, put in a network path that points at the Virtual Machines subdirectory of
your Mac home directory, as shared by the Mac. Recall the network path you learned above
from Mac OS's Windows Sharing tool. Append Virtual Machines to it, such as
\\192.168.130.96\brice\Virtual Machines. That's where you're going to
write the new virtual machine on the host. (If you plan to use Parallels

Shared Folders instead, enter a path such as
\\.psf\sharename\Virtual Machines,

where
sharename is the name of your shared folder that points to your Mac home directory.)

Converter will make a subdirectory in the UNC path you name with the same
name as the VM, and then put its .vmx file and its virtual disk in there.

Pick Workstation 5 as the destination VM type, even though Fusion is

actually
more like Workstation 6.

Now, if you're using a network share, you'll get a popup to supply your Mac

login credentials.

You'll next be asked what kind of virtual disks to make for this virtual

machine. You
may choose either "Allow virtual disk files to grow" or "Allocate all disk

space
now for better performance."
Most users wouldn't notice the performance
difference of preallocated disks, but you might if you plan to do something
especially disk-I/O-intensive in this VM. If you, like me, are always running
out of disk space, "Allow virtual disk files to grow" will be a good choice.

You cannot uncheck the box marked "Split disks
into 2 GB chunks," but it is a good choice anyway.
Dividing disks into 2 GB chunks means that
they can be safely stored in a FAT file system, such as many Mac users
have on their external hard disks.

Next Converter will ask you to confirm the network configuration for the
new VM.

The next screen will ask you whether you want to customize the VM after it
reboots using
sysprep, which is Microsoft's tool for
automatically changing the security ID and the computer name of a clone of a
Windows image.) You're just migrating this VM from Parallels to Fusion, and
you don't plan to run the source and the destination at the same time (which
would require the purchase of an additional Windows license unless you have a volume
licensing agreement). Therefore there is no need to customize.

Notice that that screen does not offer you the chance to install VMware
Tools in the new VM. It's just as well, since you need to install
Fusion's version of VMware Tools after the conversion.

Finally you're at the last screen of the wizard. Converter summarizes what
it is about to do.

For me, the transfer only took a few minutes.
Here's what it looked like in progress:

When the transfer finishes, shut down your Parallels VM, and exit Parallels Desktop.
(If you don't shut
down
your Parallels VM before starting up the Fusion VM cloned from it, you'll be in
violation of your Microsoft license agreement unless
you have a volume license. Also, depending on your VMs' network configuration,
you might get a "duplicate computer name" or even a "duplicate IP address"
warning.)

At the destination you specified on the host, you will find a new directory
(in our example, one called "Imaged from Parallels VM") containing several
.vmdk files and a
.vmx file. VMware virtual machines'

.vmx files are text files that govern how they are built.
You will discard the .vmx file created by Converter and replace it with
one created by Fusion. But you will retain the virtual disk (the .vmdk files).

Use Finder to open the subdirectory of your Virtual Machines directory where
the new virtual machine was just written. Delete the .vmx file, but leave all
other files intact.

Now create a new virtual machine, using the virtual disk that Converter
just created for us. From Fusion's "Virtual Machine Library" screen, click the New
button.

The resulting wizard first asks which operating system you "will install" in your
virtual machine. You have already installed an operating system in your virtual machine;
regardless, tell the wizard which.

Next you will be asked the name and location of your virtual machine.
Choose a descriptive name for your virtual machine. This name must be different from
the temporary name you gave Converter.

The next screen is where, ordinarily, you would create a new virtual disk. But
you want instead to use the virtual disk that Converter built for you. So click the
gray triangle next to "Advanced disk options"; click the checkbox for "Use an existing virtual
disk." In the dropdown below, select "Other..."

In the resulting file-selection dialogue, navigate into the virtual-machine directory that
Converter made for you--the one from which you deleted the .vmx file. Point
Fusion to the .vmdk file with the shortest name.

When you choose this .vmdk file, Fusion will ask you whether you want to convert
this virtual disk to the newest format. At the present time, there is no benefit to doing so. Click Keep
to leave the virtual disk alone.

If all went well, you will be returned to the virtual-disk selection screen, with the virtual
disk that Converter made for you selected.

On the finish screen, clear the checkbox labeled "Start virtual machine now."

Then click Finish. Fusion will create the new virtual machine for you,
with a .vmx file that points at the virtual disk Converter made. This new .vmx
file will not be in the same directory as the virtual disk it points to, but this oddity will
cause no problems. Of course, if you need to make a back up of this virtual machine, back up
both directories.

Fusion will leave you in the Settings dialogue for this VM. Click its OK button.

Now power on the virtual machine using the big gray button. If you get a message
warning you about the presence of SCSI virtual disks in this virtual machine, click the checkbox
for "Never show this dialog again" and dismiss it.
The condition is harmless.

Allow the virtual machine to boot all the way up. Unless your VM does so automatically,
log in as a user with administrative privilege.
There will be a long spasm of newly detected hardware; let it die down before
proceeding.

You will notice that mouse movements in the virtual machine are now
somewhat slow, and that your mouse focus seems to get stuck inside the virtual

machine when you click in it. Shortly, you will install VMware Tools, which will relieve both these

issues. In the meantime, press ctrl-cmd to get your input focus out of the

virtual machine, and click inside the virtual machine's window to put input focus back in.

Anytime you see a screen asking you to search for drivers, press Cancel to abort it.

If Windows asks you to reactivate, decline the opportunity to do so for now. It will be
much easier to reactivate when VMware Tools has been installed.

Finally, Windows will ask you for permission to reboot. Say Yes.

After the reboot, log in once again as a user with administrative privilege, if necessary.

It is now time to install VMware Tools, which, among other benefits, will supply an

accelerated mouse driver.

To install VMware Tools, press ctrl-cmd to get your mouse focus out of the

virtual machine, then pull down Fusion's
Virtual Machine menu and choose
Install VMware Tools.

The VMware Tools installer will launch inside the

virtual machine.

VMware Tools installs a number of device drivers. If Windows asks you whether you want to
install an unsigned

driver, click on

Continue Anyway or
press C.

Install all the parts of VMware Tools, even those you don't think you need

right
now.

The VMware Tools installer will ask whether it may reboots your VM. Allow it to do
so.

Now your VM is ready for use. You

now have convenient mouse operation, the ability to operate in full-screen

mode, access to virtual-machine files and applications, the use of Unity, and the use of high-speed USB 2.0
devices. If you install the Boot Camp
drivers in your guest operating system, as outlined in the Fusion documentation, you will
be able to use the iSight camera and other Mac-specific devices.

You may be tempted to remove Parallels Tools. In my judgment, at least for
Windows XP, it is not

worth the effort. Parallels's uninstaller will not work unless it is running

inside a Parallels virtual machine, so you cannot uninstall Parallels Tools

after the migration to Fusion. On the other hand, if you uninstall Parallels

Tools from the virtual machine while it is running
under Parallels, you will
find it extremely difficult to run any application, including VMware Converter.

I recommend simply removing Parallels's desktop shortcuts after the migration

is complete.

When you shut down this VM, you will notice that it does not power off all

the way. Instead, you'll be left at a screen
like this one:

This is because Parallels's virtual machines, unlike VMware's, do not
support the ACPI standard for power management. To power off the virtual
machine, or use the Power Off menu item in Fusion's Virtual Machine menu.

There are two ways to allow the virtual machine to shut down completely. If
you do not plan to equip this virtual machine in the future with two virtual
CPUs (instead of the default one), you can add a statement using a text editor
to this VM's
.vmx file while the VM's virtual power is off with a text editor
such as BBEdit or textwrangler. (If possible, avoid using TextEdit on
.vmx files, because it can

inject formatting errors if you cut-and-paste in the wrong way. See the Fusion release
notes for more detail on this topic.)

To navigate to the .vmx file using Finder, you will need to open up the package
that contains it. If you called your virtual machine "My XP Work Environment," you will
find an entry in your Virtual Machines directory with that name. Ctrl-click on it and
choose "Show Package Contents."

Once inside the package, you will see the .vmx file. Ctrl-click on it and open it
with your preferred text editor. (In the "Choose Application" dialogue, you will need to change
the list of applications from "Recommended Applications" to "All Applications," so that your
preferred text editor will be offered to you.)

Using the text editor, add this line:

gui.exitonCLIHLT = "TRUE"

Now your VM will shut down cleanly.

The other way to get the VM to shut down cleanly is to change its HAL to an

ACPI HAL. Microsoft does not support
changing Windows XP HALs from non-ACPI to ACPI except by reinstalling Windows.

You are not required to do a clean install; rather, re-installing XP on top of

an existing installation will suffice. You may need to press F5 during the

non-GUI portion of the reinstall, when the Windows installer is prompting you

to press F6 for new drivers, to choose a new HAL explicitly. Windows XP will show
you a scrollable list
of HALs to choose among; the scrolling window is only two lines high, so you must
use the arrow keys to explore the whole list. Choose ACPI

Uniprocessor HAL if you wish this VM to run with one virtual CPU, or ACPI

Multiprocessor HAL if two. (To get multi-CPU operation, you must also edit the

settings of this virtual machine in VMware Fusion, setting the number of CPUs

to two.)

Please post any comments or feedback on this procedure.
