I thought those large numbers came from posters uploading informative documents (not necessarily links to documents) or procedures and getting points for the amount of people that access it.

I'm pretty sure the point system does not reward documents, no matter how highly rated or widely read. The document I linked to makes no mention of points for documents, and my own experience bears this out (I wrote a number of the most widely read docs on these forums, but I'm pretty sure I earned all my points via posts and correct/helpful awards). The point system certainly can't take into account the informative sites that a number of the top posters maintain on their own, outside of the forum.

Although points are a fine general indicator of knowledge/participation, focusing on points makes the community worse off because the points system rewards behaviors that don't help and does not reward behaviors that do.

The Communities

I do not know other documentation.
There are a lot of interesting site.

But I think that the most important way to learn a product is use it.
And VMware docs, course (and also VMware partner central documentation) are quite good.

Wow that's a lot of points in one week andre!! I was proud of my 46 points from only really joining the community a week and a half back(the account had been created by the guy i took over from hence the since date)

I'm enjoying learning off many of the posts here as i try read through the ones that take my interest just to see how people have fixed their problems and to try grow my knowledge and pick up some tips which i definately have done!! Also i oviously try answer questions where i feel i know the answer, rather than just writing something for the point of writing as i hate having to go through posts where people have added useless information just for the sake of posting.

Is anyone on here booked up for the "what's new in vsphere" course yet? Thinking of getting myself on it as soon as it's available as i've already created a six node vsphere drs cluster and so want to perfect my knowledge and make sure i can support it correctly. Anyone know of good documentation to go through to learn all vsphere stuff apart from the obvious VMware documents?

It looks like most people asking question in VI/vSphere forums just do not to bother themselves with reading manuals. Only 5-10% of all are interesting and complicated, so more than 2 minutes required to answer.
Exactly, those asking questions in the ESX based forums tend to be System admins etc who are used to providing information to support desks etc. it has been interesting to see the level of original post infomation drop in the ESXi forums since the release of the Free version of the product as more none professional user are using it.
On top of people not returning after their questions have been answered. Is that fact that a lot of the questions in the desktop products section require mulitple replies to even get the information needed from the parent poster.

IE:
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/216806

Where as with other prodcuts the questions can generally be answered in a more timely manner as more information is provided.

Cheers
That may be so However the quality of Ullis post are very high, and is points to post ratio is very low. there are other who have been chasing points, Rob, Ulli are not those, they are here for the correct reasons That said the fact that Ulli is no longer in the Top ten is indicative of he posting in the Workstation forum, in that forum people drop in to ask a question get an answer and never return. If Moderators were authorised to award points, those posters who provide the quality responses in the hosted forums would be a lot higher up the status level than they are.

The fact that we cannot award points is a whole different argument, it was a conscious decision so that we could not be accused of nepotism.
Not all thousands of points are awarded.
For. example Robert Petruska is now The Forum King with 36,934 points and 15,387 posts. At least 15,000 points he got only for comments, 1 point for each comment, so 21,000 points only are awarded by users from this enormous amount.

Ookay!!
Now I have to bring my therapist bills up to date.

Points motivate but we shouldn't get carried away as to making it just about points. We should concentrate on giving quality replies based on our experiences with the subject matter being discussed.

Are the large points obtained in this forum, like 20,000 and better all obtained by delivering correct replies and being awarded bonus points?

I understand there is some posting points there, but still.

I thought those large numbers came from posters uploading informative documents (not necessarily links to documents) or procedures and getting points for the amount of people that access it.

As for begging for the points, a lot of posters seem like newbies looking for guidance and are not aware of the point award system. I don't see anything wrong with making them aware of it. It gives them a certain amount of leverage to get a correct reply to thier inquire, although I have seem points awarded for replies that were not helpful. It seems to me that everyone benefits from this points award system. The newbies get their answer, members get exposed to different issues concerning VMware virtualization and ultimately VMware gets less tech support calls when these newbies get into production environments.

To me the point system is like getting a small amount of gratitude for helping which I don't necessarily get at the workplace while still getting exposed to issues I might not get into because my environment is diferrent.

If you find this or any other information helpful or correct, please consider awarding points.

I think playing to maximize points (as opposed to maximizing information) is not a healthy strategy for the forums.

Full ack. Also looking at points to posts ratio is missguiding.
One of the highest quality posters that ever posted here , Petr - has a ration of 7000 posts to 10000 points.
Some of the guys busy in ESX sections have less posts than that and twice as much as points.

Lesson that I have learned: I should have started a new post for this question instead of tagging onto an "answered thread"

If you want to maximize points, yes. If you want to call attention to your question rather than risk having it lost in an existing thread, yes.

If you don't care about points, want to avoid an explosion of unnecessary threads, and want to keep related discussion together, no.

Regarding scoring, I believe you get a point for each post, plus one for each reply. See Forums help.

Personally, I think playing to maximize points (as opposed to maximizing information) is not a healthy strategy for the forums. Points are a good motivation, and there's nothing wrong with getting them, but focusing on maximizing points (including point begging) is not something I think is worthwhile.

A Helpful Answer is worth 6 reward points and a Correct Answer is worth 10 reward points. Each question can only have one Correct Answer and up to two Helpful Answers. The poster who originally asked the question is the person who hands out the "Helpful Answer" and "Correct Answer" reward points.

Each time the original poster rates a reply they receive 1 point automatically deposited into their reward points pool. The original poster can therefore earn up to 3 more reward points for rating replies (1 Correct Answer and 2 Helpful Answers). The original poster is not eligible to receive Helpful Answer points or Correct Answer points for that thread.
---
How was the "1300 points in one week" determined? Is that information available?

BTW, very impressed with the quality of this forum and I am motivated to climb the ranks.

Somewhat representation of quality is the points / posts ratio.

I doubt that - a high points to post ratio only means that the poster does most of his posts in the ESX related sections.
A low points to post ratio means that the poster is busy in hosted sections

True, sometimes I forget to use the edit link, and use instead the reply button.
Probably I miss something.

If you want to reply to a your message, why I have to edit a previous message (that is a reply to another people)?
And make it sense to a have the replay before the message that I replayed? (cause in my browser the edited message remain in the same place, not at the bottom).
(Maybe there are some view settings that I do not know, so plese tell me)

Thanks,
Just a tip:

if you want to add something to a reply don't reply again but use the "edit" button. Some topics are just flooded with replies when it could have been added to the same reply.

K-MaC wrote:
Well as the title states I was wondering if anyone knew what the most forum points ever accumulated in a running week. As it stands it AndreTheGiant is really living up to the Giant in his name and is pushing 1300points. Can anyone top that?

Cheers

Kevin

Back in the day I could have fairly easily I think, for a few reasons:
1) It wasn't unusual or difficult for me to accumulte a few hundred points per DAY. It really boiled down to users who would properly award points for correct or helpful answers.
2) The Web 1.0 forums were much faster, and thus more efficient for point farming.
3) There weren't nearly as many experts posting around here which allowed me to field a large quantity of questions.
4) I was highly active. Those who remember will note that I was providing VMware support on the VMTN forums before and after my first child's birth using the hospital kiosk workstation in the waiting room.

Let's connect the dots: VMTN is nothing more than a VMware support version of a MMORPG.
I think I can easily top that... But in my opinion it's also about quality and not only quantity.

yeah I know, I'm a grumpy fellow.
Most forum points in a week

Well as the title states I was wondering if anyone knew what the most forum points ever accumulated in a running week. As it stands it AndreTheGiant is really living up to the Giant in his name and is pushing 1300points. Can anyone top that?

Cheers
