One of the Jive support engineers has 1892 watches set. They are running a more current version than we are, so that might be the cause, but I'm not sure. I am still working the caching angle (i.e. caching as root cause) as well.
Re: Email Notifications

Hello Robert. I have done some troubleshooting from my side and I think I have found the problem as it relates to not being able to sign up for updates to threads. I currently have 200 threads marked to send me updates and the only way for me to get notification is to post to a thread. I went to my updates page and deleted the last 50 notifications that I had. After that I attempted to add another watch on a thread and when I went to my notifications screen I could that the new thread had been added. It would appear that when you post to a thread it is removing the last watch automatically. However when you simply click the 'Receive email notifications' button it is not forcing the removal of the last notification. I have tried this 3 times and although some times I still need to click multiple times on the receive notification button I am finally seeing the threads added to my watch list. So it would seem that some of the problem is resolved. Hopefully this will help you in getting to the root cause of the issue.

If you could post anything to the following thread just to confirm that I receive email notifications for a newly added thread it would be appreciated.
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/209636?tstart=0#

Thank you.

Cheers
We still believe this error is related to some caching side-effects, and we are working to investigate it. We are making some progress, but still have not identified the root cause. I'll update the blog when I have more information. This continues to be a high-priority investigation.
Hey Robert. I was wondering if there has been any progress on this issue? To be honest the problem seems to be getting worse, as now the only way I can ever receive an email from a thread is by posting to it. The 'Receive email notifications' button is essentially useless for me. I took a look at the communities page and saw an update from last but did not see any mention of this issue. Thank you for looking into this.

Cheers
My dev't team is actively investigating this issue. We have a theory about the root cause, and it seems to be related to document editing failures and image insertion failures that people have been reporting. I will update the VMware Communities Blog when I have more information.
I'm glad to hear it's not happening anymore. But to be honest, it appears to be an intermittent issue, so it would not surprise me if it happened again. The good news is that it doesn't seem to happen very frequently and I have only seen a small number of community members report it. But if you see it again, please report it, and I'll continue to investigate or see if I can correlate it to some other external events. Thanks, Robert

Robert Dell'Immagine, Director of VMware Communities

Yes, please send examples when you find them.

I had an internal user who claimed the same problem yesterday, and I then tried exactly what he was doing and it worked for me. So, definitely an intermittent problem, but one I'm working on.
Thanks Robert.　It is really quite intermitent, so I think it will end up being hard to track down. At any rate it seems to be working again. But I am quite sure that before the day is out I will be unable to add new alerts. Would you like me to provide examples of threads I am unable to add in the future?
In fact when I check my notification list it does not contain any of the notifications that I have set today. The only thread from today that is listed in my notications is a thread that I posted in. I noticed that if I turn notifications on in a thread and the refresh the page that the notification is cleared.
