The document centers around VMs in an ESX cluster. In this case, VC is required to determine the "owner" of the VM before the snapshot is taken. You could certainly direct this to an ESX server instead of VC. The client is not really needed for VCB to function. When you configure VCB the config.js would need a hostname of either the VC or an ESX server. If you use vRanger, you don't really need to edit the config.js file. vRanger will want the info for VC and all of the ESX servers involved.

If you do not have a vCenter server then the vRanger and VCB backup processes will communicate with the ESX server(s) involved. If you are clustering your ESX servers, then the communications will need to go through the vCenter server.

I am sorry,I should have been more clear. In your document you mentioned it states the following.

This document assumes the following configuration: VirtualCenter 2.5 ESX 3.5 VCB 1.5 proxy server Veritas NetBackup 6.0 Vizioncore vRangerPro VMware Converter 3.0.3

I was simply wondering if VirtualCenter is required or if we can use the client in its place. I also have set aside a seperate machine physical machine to run both vRanger and the VCB proxy. Our goal is to run automated backups from our SAN to a Tape drive with once weekly full backups and daily differentials.

I'm sorry, but I don't think I understand the question. Use the VC or client for what? If you mean the VCB Proxy, it really should be on a separate machine, but it will run concurrently with VC with the latest version. VCB and vRanger are very I/O intensive and could cause issues with VC communications.

Check out my doc about VCB, NetBackup and vRanger. I presented this in a session at VMworld and posted a companion doc on VIOPS. It explains how to set it up using NetBackup, but the concept is the same for any backup software, as long as it has a facility for pre and post scripts.

Hey Stefan, thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I am stuck. I am only able to use software that offers support in Japanese. It is frustrating at times but I suppose I can understand, being the only English speaker at my company. If I were to get hit by a beer truck tomorrow it would leave the company up sh#ts creak.

We currently use VCB and I have tested out integrating VCB with vRanger, Backup Exec and today i'll be testing ARCserve. It would be nice if vRanger offered direct to tape as I really enjoy the rest of their product but the office wants one solution for backups and archival.

On Page 26 of the vmWare Virtual Machine Backup Guide it states that in LAN Mode, as opposed to SAN Mode, that a virtual disk cannot be larger than 1tb.

There are also other backup solutions worth looking at is Veeam, VCB, esXpress and you can see all charts and comparisons from Edward at www.vmprofessional.com

Hello all. We are currently evaluating different options for backing up our VM's. I ran into a website in Japanese that states the maximum hdd size that vRanger can backup is 500gb? Is this correct? I cannot find any mention of this on English sites. I sent a support request to vizioncore but it will take 24-48 hours to recieve a reply. The only thing that I could think of is that the limitation is due to the VMFS block size being set to 1mb. Any help would be appreciated.
