I need to retract that statement. It appearred to uninstall with no errors, but when I try to install VM WS of 6.5 or 6.0, it gives a list of conflicts, errors and missing dependencies. It still thinks VMplayer is there. I've deleted several VM directories but no help.

Glad to hear you got it uninstalled. BTW, you recently mentioned 64-bit host. Is the guest OS also 64-bit? There are specific host requirements in order to run 64-bit guests, besides having a 64-bit CPU. (See KB 1901.) There is a tool to check for 64-bit guest capability.

I have exported the VM to a version 5 VM and get the same problem. It appears that 64 bit Linux VMPlayer does not play Linux VM's. The VM does fine on VMworkstation. Neither does the VMPlayer uninstall. Major bummer. Any solutions are appreciated.

woodleg wrote:The primary production server which runs is Redhat ES - 64 bit. The VM was developed on my Vista machine but I need to run that VM in production on the Redhat server.

Just copy the directory containing the virtual machine back to your Vista host. You do not have to run the virtual machine, just open it in Workstation and choose to change the virtual hardware version.

I will need to find an uninstall procedure for the VMPlayer. Looks like I may have to find each individual file to clean up. That's the only option I have.

Once the virtual machine is downgraded back to WS6.0/Player2.0, then copy the virtual machine back to the Redhat host and run it in Player. If Player2.0. Possibly even reinstalling Player 2.0 if the existing installation is messed.

But that's my point, change the virtual machine, not the host.

If you would pass this over to a Linux guy on your team that would be appreciated. Not sure if a phone call is possible but that would be appreciated too.

I'm an independant contractor. No "team" here. Hopefully someone else with more Linux experience can give you other ideas, if necessary.

Do you just have any other machine that you can temporarily install WS6.5 on. All you need 6.5 for is to downgrade the virtual machine, then copy the downgraded virtual machine back to the host with Player2.0. Even a Windows box to load WS6.5 as the downgrade will work as long as you do not have snapshots.
The VMPlayer uninstall has turned into a real mess on my Redhat ES. I tried to uninstall using the rpm -e and it went down in flames. Thinking VMPlayer was stable I didnt' worry about installing it on my production box. Even the VM I want to run on the Redhat is not compatible with the VMPlayer 2.05, so I guess I need to run VM WS on Redhat. I have attached a screenshot with info:
I'm sorry, I'm not a linux person so I don't know if I can help you much. But you must uninstall Player in order to install Workstation. Make sure you've shut down all virtual machines. I'd recommend a reboot of the physical host as well.
I am trying to install the VMWare Workstation 6.5 on Redhat. VMplayer 2.05 is installed; but when I try to rpm -e VMPlayer it says it's not installed. When I try to install the VMWorkstation 6.5 it says it conflicts with VMplayer 2.05. VMWorkstation also says it fails the dependencies. How do I remove VMPlayer?

and how do I resolve the dependencies?

You can't download Player2.5. It hasn't been released yet. It is the version included with Workstation 6.5 beta, but hasn't been released as a separate product yet. Thus the need to run your virtual machine through WS6.5b to change the virtual hardware version down to WS6.0/Player2.0.

Virtual machines created with WS6.5 have different virtual hardware. You would need Player 2.5, when VMWare releases it. If you still have access to WS6.5, open your virtual machine in WS6.5, then from the VM menu, choose change or upgrade virtual machine. Then change it to WS6.0.
I have installed VMplayer 2.0.5-109488.x86.rpm which appeared to install. It appeared to install ok. I have cloned a SLES10sp1 VM from an installation on VM Workstation (beta) 6.5 build 10068. When I try to start the SLES10sp1 vm I get the following message:

Guest operating system 'sles10' is not supported. Please select a guest operating system from the General page onthe OPtions tab of Virtual Mahcine settings.

Since this is VMplayer there is no General page and no options. What am I missing to get this VM to run on VMplayer?

I am still a bit new to VMware, so please forgive the dumb questions.
