In case you use Workstation - disable shared folders and try again
This not a VMware issue but a MS one, if you do a google with the line "windows XP SP3 not installing updates" you will receive a wide varity of responses. It is due to the way that MS has changed security handling with SP3

I have also moved this thread to a more apporpiate forum for a greater audience
I'm having the same problem... I've been using Fusion for the last week or so and it has been working perfectly with the exception of updating via Windows Update... It'll go through the motions of downloading everything, but will fail to install any of it. Should I be worried? I have Win XP installed with SP3 (after the initial installation I was able to update fine, but after that no luck).... I'm using a Intel iMac 2.4GHz with 4GB of ram... Please help

Windows XP Pro not updating via Windows Update

Well, that's not entirely true. It has updated correctly for the first couple of updates, incl. Service Pack 3. After that, I keep getting error messages when trying to update via the official Windows Update website: First it searches for necessary updates, then detects several recommended updates for Windows XP Pro and MS Office 2007, then downloads them (well, they are downloaded already, so this keeps getting skipped).

After that, it attempts to install the updates, but fails in doing so and gives me an error message. This essentially means I can no longer install any (security) updates, which of course sucks. By the way, this is a fresh install and I have not done anything to any of the default settings.

Somebody got any clue on this. Thanks.
