We try to make it work, but we don't guarantee it. Having said that, I suspect the timing is coincidental. You can "pull the plug" (this will lose unsaved data) by deleting the .vmss file inside the .vmwarevm bundle (see <a class="jive-link-wiki" href="http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-1110">A Beginner's Guide to VMware Fusion</a> if you need help finding this).
