Step 2 went partially OK. I compiled and installed the iSight driver for the one built-in into the 17in Mac Book Pro. The driver built correctly and it works for abot 10-20 seconds in Ekiga, then the picture stops changing. A ny ideas?

I installed Skype 2.X for Linux beta. The iSight camera is recognized, but the screen stays black. This is a currently known bug with most USB cameras in Skype under Ubuntu, and I will have to wait for a Skype update to see if the driver works with it.

Step one worked great. I got the ISO files, I use the patch and they installed in Ubuntu 7.10 perfectly.

Next I'll try to compile and install the Sight driver.

One ting I noted whn running Ubuntu. EVERYTHING seems to wok, EXCEPT for sound recording and any kind of sound input.

I tried Preferences - Sound and all selections under Sound Capture fail with "failed to construct test pipeline for gcongaudiosrc !audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink ! profle = chat.

Also when I use the Sound Recorder nothing ever gets recorded.

Interestingly sound recording and sound input works perfectly with Red Hat EL.

Is this a known problem with Ubuntu 7.10 and VMware?

The GStreamer test popped right up with my mug after running ./isight_install.sh. iSight in Linux - definitely possible. Linux kernel:
Linux ubuntu710 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I just dowloaded the tar.gz file with the iSight driver. It looks like that before launching the "make", I'll need a small patch to the source code. The idProduct code for the "Buitl-in iSight - with firmware loaded" is listed as 0x8501. Apparently my 17in Macbook Pro has a idProduct code of 0x8502 (found usaing lsusb in RHLE), which also has the firmware pre-loaded. Maybe someone can tell the guy that produced the original patch in 2006 that new iSight code are in place.

If the Desktop icon does not appear and you do not have assess thru /media/cdrom then you may have to just mount the ISO manually in the CD/DVD settings. The path to the linux.iso is:

/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/isoimages/linux.iso

Edit: Forgot to say don't click on Install VMware Tools menu command if your mounting the ISO manually.

That's a very good workaround. Thanks. I'll definitely try that also.

Once you're running 1.1, start up Ubuntu (or any Linux) and choose Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools, then linux.iso will be automounted for you. The path to the install tarball is /media/cdrom (Tools CD icon should appear on the desktop too). You can open a Terminal window and start the process then.

It's Ubuntu 7.10 desktop. Yes, VMware Tools are installed via the vmware-install.pl script.
Without Apple support for iSight on Linux, your case may be a common stopping point. You could try to petition Apple while getting the open-source team(s) to look at the showstoppers in RHEL's kernel versions. RHEL kernel variants (EL) are a recurring problem with that distribution.

No such luck. I already had tried to compile the Apple iSight driver, but is is based on a set of kernel source not compatible with Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5. The USB Class Linux device driver is based on similar code, and also won't compile either.

You need iSight drivers. AFAIK Apple only has 32-bit Windows drivers, so you'll need some open source alternative. I'm not sure what the status of iSight support in Linux is in general, and you might be better off asking in a RHEL5-centric forum.
