Re: How to use the VmProvisioningChecker?
Manfred,

As mentioned in the previous post, ServiceContent.VmProvisioningChecker will only return in case of vSphere as this object has been newly added in vSphere and would not be available with VC 2.5. To use similar method which checks for host compatiblity for VMotion in VC 2.5, you can use QueryVMotionCompatibility_Task API which is the API of ServiceInstance managed object. However, this has been depricated in vSphere so you need to use QueryVMotionCompatibilityEx_Task API which is the method of VmProvisioningChecker managed object.

Hope this clarifies your query.
You need:

same shared storage access

sname network for VM

same network of heartbeat (usually the service console/management interface)

VMware HA license

vCenter Agent license

available vCenter Server "connection"... ok if you have vCenter Standard... warning on vCenter Foundation (max 3 hosts)

It's a DNS resolution problem.
Try to add the name in hosts file both on vCenter Server and your client.
Also try to use the vCenter Client directly from a RDP session on vCenter Server.

How to get the VCenter services status inforamtion via VI SDK ..

For this question I cannot help... sorry.
Try to post in the relative community section
Re: Чем заменить RDP

Вот у меня тоже похожий вопрос есть:
View 4 (Trial

View Agent?

Internet на гостевой Ubuntu

How to update vCenter 4.0 to 4.0u1

I have three ESX hosts on vSphere 4.0 and got vCenter 4.0 running as well
I manually update vSphere Client 4.0 to 4.0u1 doing manual install procedures (setup.exe)
I run Update Manager on vSphereClient to apply updates to my hosts. So the hosts run 4.0u1 as well.

But how can I update my vCenter from 4.0 to 4.0u1? Do I have to take the full package 208167 and run setup?

thanks again many many times. Yes on the vmware workstation it is by default as Bridge.I connect my phycal Lan card to a switch and then it enable and does't show message as following.

The Network Bridge on device VMnet0 is temporary down because the bridge Ethernet Interface...The Virtual Machine may not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network.

I also make a new Hard disk using start port ....smile.

One problem is still there that my host operating system does't ping the guest operating system but the guest can ping what should be the problem.

Finally in the StarPort software I can see

Local Ram Disk devices
Virtual DVD
Image File device
AoE device

Can u please highlight it its purpose and what they are?

At the end I may pay many many thanks for your complete help and assistance.

bundle of thanks,
More info:
I decided to boot from an XP install CD to try to repair the installation.
To my surprise the XP setup did not see any hard disks on the PC!

But if I attach the vmdk to another XP virtual machine and boot it up then I can see this disk in disk manager and it is a healthy NTFS active partition on it.

I tried to remove it from my virtual machine and then re-add it but it seems not to make any difference.

If I start to BIOS the disk is not visible at all!

What is going on here???

All worked fine (the VM does not freeze) but still the Hardware Acceleration is full activated after the installation of the VM-Tools the mouse judders and it seems that there is no Hardware Acceleration .
Any ideas ?

Yours sincerley
ESXi has a limited (and unsupported) management console.
If you enable SSH, then root access is enabled.
To isolate root from non-root access see:
hi ,

Thanks for the reply, i already enabled SSH in the path /etc/inet.conf. I know DBCLIENT is also used for authentication purpose as SSH only ,if it so then where is dbclient conf file?? i found one conf file for dbclient in the path "/etc/dhclient-vmk0.leases"(i am not sure whether it is the conf file for dbclient or not).

In the same way can i know about "lwiod.conf" file, where it is placed i found it is not there is ESXi4.0,can i know why it is not there.whereas it is present in ESX4.0.

please suggest.
ESXi 3.5 on a HP ProLiant ML110 G3
Hello

I have tried a lot. But always the same result.

I try ESXi 3.5 U4 on an HP ProLiant ML 110 G3 to run. Installation CD and USB stick. Generig and HP image.
I always get the Purple screen with an APIC message if he wants to load the ipmv module.

Current BIOS is installed.
Hard disk are in Compatibility mode (SATA only) in BIOS. There are 2x SATA disk. No RAID.
I try many diffrent setings in BIOS... But always same result...

I know it is not supported HW.
I have searched a lot and I know I'm not the only one how wants to install it on a ML110 G3.
So maybe there are some new ideas what i could to try!

Thanks!!!
When a VMDirectPath VM is started ESXi must reset the device and in some cases it has to reset all devices on a common bush. It may be that these devices all share a PCI bridge. You can confirm that by looking at esx.conf and seeing which device is enabled for passthru. See some examples here - With ESXi you can enable SSH but it is not supported unless directed by VMware tech support - http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/ESXi_enable_SSH.php.

The high CPU usage probably also depends on the other load you have on your VC and the type of HW your VC is running on.
In my environment that query doesn't go higher than 30% CPU usage.

To start with you can optimise the small script like this

Get-VM | %{
	Get-Cluster -VM $_
}

If you pass the VM-name to the Get-Cluster cmdlet it will have to perform a Get-Vm (again).
By passing the VirtualMachineImpl object (output from the Get-Vm), you avoid that extra (internal) step.
I noticed that the script uses only half of the CPU resources compared to the original script.

i had installed ESX and ESXi 4.0 versions.i am able to join the domain and even authenticate with domain users.

In ESX4.0 i am able to find /etc/ssh/ssh_config and /etclikewise/lwiod.conf files, but the same is not seen in ESXi4.0. i am not able to find these two files in ESXi,can i know the reason behind this. i know ESXi4.0 is not supporting SSH but iam able to login using domain users using dbclient option.then where this dbclient files will present.please help me

Re: Get Guest OS Family and OS Full Name from PowerCLI when VM Tools not installed?

Partially right.
The OS that you see in the VIC or in the VMX is what the creator of the guest defined during the creation.
It corresponds with the -GuestId parameter on the New-VM cmdlet.
See Errors when specifying GuestIDs to New-VM for some more info on this GuestId.

The problem is that the creator of the guest can define whatever he wants in here, it doesn't have to correspond with the actual installed OS on the guest !

You can get that entry like this

(Get-VM <VM-name> | Get-View).summary.config.guestFullName

Do you have a scratch partition configured for the host? 1 GB is sufficient to run ESXi and if you're cloning be aware that the dump partition is not FAT. It might be better to run a new install and then restore a configuratio backup.

Добрый день!

Наблюдается интересная особенность. Сервера ESX обновление Update01 восприняли без проблем и все изменения прошли в штатном режиме.

На виртуальных серверах появилось предупреждение о необходимости обновить VMware tools.

Обновление стартует нормально, но НЕ ЗАВЕРШАЕТСЯ!!! Приходится в аварийном режиме перегружать сервер, после этого, вроде бы все нормализуется.

Как правильно обновить VMware tools?

Re: Is it possible to convert from a hard disk?

So now I have successfully created the virtual disk image of the physical disk using vmware-vdiskmanager.exe.

Then inside VMWare Workstation I created a new virtual machine using this disk image as the disk for it. I made it a WinXP virtual machine and used the defaults except for networking which was set to bridged.

Then I used the VMWare converter 3.0.2u1-62546 which I had already installed on my PC and used the Configure function since the disk conversion was already done. Configure opened up the virtual mchine and did something inside the vmx and vmdk files and finished in quite a short time.

So I then tried to start the new vm from WorkStation, but it failed. I am only seeing a black screen with a blinking cursor. Apparently it is not booting.

If I check the vmdk by looking into it with WinImage all seems to be just fine and dandy. The boot.ini file looks fine for example.

The source disk was a 320 Gb drive with two partitions, one 200 Gb system part with about 70 Gb of data and where Windows was installed. The other was a 120 Gb data partition with a lot of data. But I figured that I could cope with that data later so I only converted the system partition, was this an erroneous decision?

What do I do now to make the virtual machine _boot up_?

Wow...been a while since I've seen a thread like this. But if it makes some feel better..."I was wrong!" Well partially. It wasn't accurate just to say that it won't install on a DL350 G4p. I guess what I should have said was "It's not a supported configuration", which was my intent. I have no clue whether it would install or not...and that wasn't the point of the post. The 2nd part of the response was directed to the question about running 64-bit VMs. Just my opinion, but when someone new to VMware infrastructure asks a question similar to the original post, I think it's the community's responsibility to direct them to supported configurations or at least make it clear that the reply is not supported and generally not recommended for running in a production environment...something that wasn't done in the initial response. With that said, thanks to cookieme for clarifying the situation!

I am mostly looking for support for:

copy/paste between the remote machien and the VMware accessed through VNC

You can use the pvscsi-1.0.0.5-signed-Windows200X.flp image.
But on ESXi installation there isn't.
So just take from a full ESX installation.

Or try (but I not sure that it can work) with /store/packages/4.0.0/floppies/vmscsi-1.2.1.0-signed.flp
Knowing that everything renders first in a lossy state then transitions to lossless is good to know. Because that behavior is not expected, it has a tendency to seem incorrect. One of the main issues is that even small image alt tags when browsing render first as lossy, then move to lossless. This gives the overall impression of a blurry display.

Do you know of any parameters that can be adjusted or tweaked to adjust this behaviour?

In the release notes for 4.0 U1 it says the Paravirtual SCSI adaptor can now be used for the boot drive. During the Windows OS installation you can press F6 and point it to the /vmimages/floppies directory for the needed drivers. The problem is with my ESXi 4.0 U1 host, I can locate the vmimages directory but there's nothing in there. So where are these mysterious paravirtual floppy images for Windows 2003/2008?

Quorum Cluster Functionality in Vmware 7

I've tried to get clustering working to use a Quorum disk and the basic steps that used to work in 5.5 give me variable errors with 7. Has anyone done this using 7? (I know that the official line is not supported in a production environment but really, Vmware is for our test environments too so...)

Here are the changes to the vmx file that I have added:
' Add the following lines to create a second SCSI channel:
scsi1.present = “TRUE”
scsi1.virtualDev = “lsilogic”

' Modify the additional hard drives to be attached to the new SCSI channel. Example:
scsi1:5.present = “TRUE”
scsi1:5.fileName = “I:\Cluster Shared\Quorum.vmdk”

scsi1:6.present = “TRUE”
scsi1:6.fileName = “I:\Cluster Shared\Data.vmdk”

' Add the following lines to disable disk locking and caching:
disk.locking = “false”
diskLib.dataCacheMaxSize = “0″

Thanks in advance,
Re: what's the difference between VixVM_CreateSnapshot and VixVM_BeginRecording?
VixVM_CreateSnapshot creates a static snapshot that represents a point-in-time of the VM, where VixVM_BeginRecording creates a snapshot that will continue to grow with recorded "transactions" that represent activity within the VM since the point-in-time when the snapshot was taken. Note that you must eventually call VixVM_EndRecording to stop recording or, theoretically, you will continue to record indefinitely. The recording functionality was made available with the release of Workstation 6.5. In comparison, VixVM_CreateSnapshot was a valid call back since Workstation 6.0 (VIX API 1.1). Hope this helps.
I've tried this with Vmw 7 and here are basic tips:
1.) To use the vmdk file, open VMware and create a new virtual machine. One of the options will be to use an "existing virtual disk." (In VMware Fusion, this is the last option below, "use operating system disk" and "use OS disc image file.")
2.) Make sure your VM is set to use bridged networking, rather than NAT.
2.) The username and password to login to Chrome OS / Chromium OS is your google account!

That limit calue will fluctuate as memory is used by VMs - and looking at the DRS usage you have one host that memory is 80% utilized and theother about 40% utilized - so there is a lot of memory being used -
I put ESXi 4 on too small of a USB thumb drive...

I screwed up and put ESXi on a 1 GB USB thumb drive. That was the only one I had that would fit vertically in an HP ProLiant DL380 server (all my other ones were too tall). Yes, I am an idiot

I figured the ESXi installer would complain if it was too small - it didn't, so I figured I was safe and carried on with the install.

Now I trying to update to ESXi 4 U1 and the if fails telling me there is not enough space. Anyone have any suggestions? I thought of these possible options:

1) Install 1 of the 4 updates at a time, hoping it deletes temp files each time and there would be enough space to do at least one, and then move on to the next one.
2) Build a new ESXi 4 server will the same configuration (on a larger USB) and swap them? Would this work? Would it recognize my existing SAS drives I use for the VMDK files and let me import the VMs? I am using all local drives with no SAN connection.
3) Copy the USB to a new one...not sure of the techincal skills required to do this...I am not much of a Linux admin

Just downloaded a Workstation 7 eval. Thank god they didn't create this problem there too. It works fine.
Surely there has to be a way to avoid this full-screen mess in Player 3 though.

Remote debugging not working in VM7

Hi,

I was able to remote debug using a trial VM 6.5, but I can't using my recently purchased vm workstation version 7.0.0.

Firewalls are off, same username/password/domain on host and guest, changed the "users log on as themselves" in the security policy but... When I start the live debugging visual studio gets stuck and after a few minutes gives the attached generic error message.

In the VM, the msvsmon is started but can't find any process to attach to.

I am able to start a process without debugging.

The error messages I get in the log file when I attach start a process are

Failed to attach the debugger to selected processes. (in case of attaching)

Debugger->Go failed with error 0x80004005 (in case of starting)

Would very much appreciate any help...

Re: P2V guest black screen

There's a couple of solutions here:

1) Reconfigure the virtual disk file to be a SCSI disk instead of IDE

Remove the virtual disk from the virtual machine (right-click edit settings -> hard disk -> remove from virtual machine -> OK)

Connect to service console (ESX) or unsupported mode (ESXi) and open the descriptor disk with a text editor such as vi (i.e. "vi /vmfs/volumes/storage/virtualmachinefolder/virtualdisk.vmdk"

Change ide to "buslogic" or "lsilogic" and save the file

Add the virtual disk back to the virtual machine (right-click edit settings -> add -> hard disk -> use existing disk -> browse to the disk etc)

Verify that the scsi controller is set to buslogic or lsilogic (buslogic will probably have the most success)

Power on the virtual machine

2) Use Converter to create the destination disk as SCSI instead of IDE

Converter 4x has a new disk controller option that is defaulted to "preserve source"

If the original disk is IDE, the virtual disk will be IDE as well

Perform the conversion again and go through the Converter Wizard

On the 2nd last screen with the various "Edit" options, there should be an Edit button for devices (without looking at the screen)

Select the dropdown menu and choose buslogic/lsilogic instead of preserve source

Convert the VM and it should boot

Rule of thumb is that if the virtual machine boots up and it immediately has a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left, then it's a hardware issue (controller most likely).

Hope this helps.
Vegemite

I did as described above, which was changing the destination disk controller to SCSI BusLogic Parallel when converting. I did it within the conversion process. The default is "preserve source" and I forced it to SCSI which makes it SCSI (0:0) Hard Disk 1.

Try going into your SCSI controller and changing it from what it is now (which is what?) to what I have set on mine, which is BusLogic Parallel and see if you have the SCSI options in your hard disk configuration.

If this doesnt work, I'd try the conversion one more time, but making sure to change the "preserve source" for the HDD or SCSI controller and set it accordingly. I had a few XP machines go wrong and they ended up like this and I never did resolve it. I did it today with this new "fix" and it worked when it previously did not.

Also, I was wrong with my first assumption of the piracy protection in Windows. It will just force you to re-activiate before you're allowed to sign in. This is also assuming you're not running a volume license version of XP.

Player 3.0 full screen mode issues
I've used VMware Workstation 4, 5, and 6 quite a bit in the past, just decided to give VMware Player 3.0 a try. Linux host, Windows XP guest.

A "feature" I've noticed is that when you resize your VMware Player window to take up all of your screen (not counting your KDE taskbar, apparently), it automatically jumps to full screen mode. This is actually extremely annoying because I want my KDE taskbar available at all times. I don't want VMware Player to ever go into full-screen mode. Is there a way to make this happen? Hard to believe there isn't, but I haven't found any info (or, surprisingly, anyone else complaining about this) on the net.

Hi everyone,

I've recently upgraded my Dell PE2950iii ESXi 3.5 Embedded to 4.0. After the upgrade I was unable to patch the host after successfully scanning and downloading the 2 available patches. I then decided (after reading a user's post) to run the Repair option on the ESXi 4 CD. The repair went through fine without any visible errors. Now that I am attempting scan and patch my host, I get an error which referred me to an viu-3 log file. I'm not to clear on how to read it but I managed to locate this piece of info that may be valuable in determining what is at fault in my setup.
Is there a trick to making the boot argument permanent? I have to enter "esxcfg-advcfg -k TRUE skipmicrocodecompatcheck`` every time I reboot the machine. This isn`t the practical in case the power goes out and I want it to reboot automatically.

Re: ESXi 4.0U1, ICH10, JMicron, Passthrough Separation Issue
Do I not read the p6tconfig.jpg correctly?

I understood it as the ICH10 SATA being one device and the JMicron (4 main lines from the bottom) another. The SATA AHCI line says nothing about ports either. The behavior is more as if all devices on the board (including the plugin card for ethernet, which is clearly a separate device, just as the JMicron chips) are subsumed as ICH10 under the ports of the ICH. So, for example even if I would plug in another SATA controller, it could end up being classified as ICH10 and not be available separately. How do you then keep running an ESXi with local resources? I thought several controllers in one box are possible?

I would really just like to use one device for a VM and keep the other one for the host without being usurped. It was not clear to me that the anexation of the JMicron was real or just a configuration issue (to be clear, the JMicron is NOT on the Intel Chip, but a separately attached controller, just like the Ethernet card). How do you read the p6tconfig?

Re: P2V guest black screen

Well I've tried a few things but without any luck. Still get the black screen. I tried the following:

Re-installed the Vmware agent on the XP guest.

VM's hard disk can only be set to "IDE (0:0) hard disk 1"

Copied "sysprep" MS files to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\sysprep\xp, on both the vCenter Server and the source physical XPmachine.

@ lowburb - yes I have the same problem - the XP logo doesn't show at all.

Attached are some screenshots...

Thanks all!
I have the same problems. The best suggestion I've heard is to switch into unity mode and then change your desktop wallpaper in Windows to match your wallpaper on your Mac. It doesn't fix any of the drawing problems, but it tricks you into thinking its not as bad. I really hope VMware at least acknowledges this problem. Thus far I am really disappointed with this upgrade.

Re: Can/How to ESXi 4.0 to an HP ML350 G4p

enDemand wrote:

You won't be able to install ESXi 4.0 on an ML350 G4p. The minimum requirement is a G5, as Intel-VT must be available and supported by the chipset and CPU. I think this is due to the 64-bit nature of ESXi 4. Either way, the G4 is not on the HCL for ESXi 4.0 or 4.0U1:
http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

This is incorrect! Yes, the server does not have Intel-VT (correct) and therefore you cannot run 64bit virtual machines. Nonetheless, enDemand has said that ESXi won't install because the minimum requirement is a G5 with Intel-VT. These statements are just wrong.

So, if you like it is not totally incorrect. Just incorrect. Better?
