hi,

i would like to do a backup script to backup my VMs on a SAN. What is the better way to do it?

should i use vcbmounter and restore? and how?

or should i just tar the /vmfs/volume/Storage/VM1 directory?

thank you

Hi all,

We are very happy to say that replacing the CNA on the blade seems to have resolved
the problem.

Cloning virtual machines on that blade now go straight forward to
100% without any issue on that and the other blades.

Thanks to Cisco's TAC and VMware Supports that works togheter to solve our problem.

Re: Does vmnet8 value == NAT gateway??

To see what your (virtual) NIC mappings & status is, run:

/usr/lib/vmware/net-services.sh status

The host's adapter for NAT, default of /dev/vmnet8, should have a .1 address on the subnet you have picked ("ifconfig vmnet8") and the default gateway should be on a .2 (which is what you will get if you use DHCP for the guests).
Thank you again, i read this information and if DEP is not enabled i just write on the command line:

bcdedit /set pae ForceEnable

But will DEP be available in the system i want to use?
I read:

Windows automatically enables PAE if DEP is enabled on a computer that supports hardware-enabled DEP

Where can i find the DEP-specification of my system?

Hola

Excellent question...and because I'm not super familiar with the Fujitsu Primergy servers, I took a gander on their site. The information that you're looking for may be in one of these 2 TX200 S4 docs: Operating Manual or Technical Manual (system board).

OK so an update for everyone.

It appears I have a memory issue.

I was able to go into the BIOS via the DRAC and switch the memory in to Mirror mode as I have 8x1GB sticks of RAM.

It crashed again but this time the DRAC was able to Log something. I have since added new RAM and all is well so far.
Writing to VMDK using SAN transport mode
Hi,

In one of the other threads, sudershan mentioned that writing via SAN mode is supported. but i never succeeded in doing so. Here are the steps that am doing.

1. created a new VM using VI client.

2. Got the VM disk URL and then using Vixdisk API, connected to the ESX server, opened the disk for writing.

I used VixDiskLib_ConnectEx and mentioned NULL for snapshot Ref, because this is newly created VM and i dont have snapshot for it. The disk was opened in "nbd" mode.

3. Later, i created a snapshot for the VM and used the snapshot Moref in place of snapshotRef in VixkDiskLib_ConnectEx(). Now am trying to open the child disks in write mode to write to. Now also the disks were opened in "nbd" mode as well.

What is the exact procedure to open a newly created VM disks to be able to write via SAN. If this can be included in Designing backup solutions guide, it would be more useful.

Thanks,

Hi All
This is my first post so please correct me if there is anything wrong.

Before you can use , you need to allow ssh. all you need to do is to login into the service console with your root user name and password. and go the below location

vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config

you can use vi or nano to open
just look for the PermitRootLogin where it says no. just change that to yes and restart sshd service

now you can use software like putty to connect to your esx server

* In the US (where I don't live) at least one company is selling non-Apple hardware running legally acquired OSX licences. Apple hasn't been able, yet, to shut it down.

I suggest you Google and get your info correct before posting in the future. The U,S, courts have already ruled in Apple's favor and deemed that company to be selling illegally modified versions of OSX. How OSX was obtained is moot. OSX was illegally modified in order to run on non-Apple hardware. The restriction to have OSX only run on Apple hardware was found by the courts to NOIT be overly restrictive, thus is legal and allowed.

The company has filed for bankruptcy so it is effectively shut down from selling what you pose as an example.
You can use vCenter Server to export a VM in a OVF template.
Or VMware Standalone Converter: http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv40.html
Also ovftool can be used: http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/vmware/howto/create-and-convert-ovf-files.html
I think that you have to fix your installation and also check the status of your storage.
The missing area must also be visible in /vmfs/volumes...

But first make a backup of your VM.
to view the status of the vmnic you can use the command

#esxcfg-nics -l (where -l isto list)

to change the IP of ur vmnic1 u can use the command

ifconfig vmnic1 <IP Address> <Subnet mask>

in my case the entry for subnet mask was not correct so i changed the same using the command

ifconfig vmnic1 netmask <subnet mask>

I've had 2 separate VMs get the disk sync error at random times now.

I get the following error message.. and then the VM is dead. Unrecoverable.

How can I get my files back or ideally, fix up the VM so it is usable again ?

Seems to be VMware Fusion 3.0 .. going back to 2.0.6 until I hear it's stable.

I've attached the error message.. and log files

Just wondering, is it possible to connect a Virtual Machine to a domain (Win XP Pro) without connecting the host machine to the domain also?
If so, how would I get the VM to recognise that a Ethernet cable is plugged in?

Hi all,

I create a user group "labuser" and assign it "Virtual Machine Power User (example)".

So, create a user1 as labuser member. When I try to create a VM it's denied as "Need to assign Allocate Resource to VM", so I did.

After that, user1 can create VM no problem, however it goes too smoothly. I notice as user1, I can act as if I'm administrator. I can edit Roles. Eventhough I shouldn't have the permission (it's untick). I'm suspecting if it's a bug. Pls let me know if you need more info.

Printers from Mac not showing up

I'm running 2.0.6 and the printers to be shared from the Mac periodically don't show up in the VM. Sometimes those printers will reappear if I reboot the VM, sometimes they don't appear (which means I can't print from the VM unless I manually add the printers). I tried upgrading to Fusion 3, but the printers have never showed up in 3.

What could cause the printers to disappear and reappear, seemingly at random, and is there any fix that would get them to stick around?

Re: VProbes with Workstation 7.0

Hi Jiri,

Thanks for pointing this out. The example is indeed broken, for a
number of reasons.

1) First, support for guest symbols via the vprobe.guestSyms vmx option
has been deprecated in Workstation 7.0. If you look in the vmware.log
file in the VM directory you'll probably see something like this:

VProbe: option vprobe.guestSyms is deprecated
VProbe: guest symbol file /home/jsimsa/vmware/Ubuntu/symbols not used

VP scripts must now specify numeric addresses. Support for symbolic
address resolution will only provided for Emmett scripts, via the
emmett compiler. The new emmett compiler will be release on
sourceforge within the next couple of weeks.

2) Second, getgueststr is used incorrectly in this example. It has
three arguments: destination string variable, number of bytes to read,
address of the guest string. The description in the manual is correct,
but the use in the example is incorrect.

3) Third, it seems that, at least in Ubuntu 7.04, saved_command_line
is the actual address of the string, not the address of a pointer
to the string.

The correct example that fixes all the issues above looks like this:
(replace 0xc042b020 with the address for "saved_command_line" from
your symbol file):

(defstring command_line_str)
(definteger saved_command_line 0xc042b020)
(vprobe VMM1Hz
(getgueststr command_line_str 255 saved_command_line)
(printf "Linux command line (at %#x):\n%s\n"
saved_command_line command_line_str)
)

Hope this helps. We will try to correct this example in the VProbes
reference manual.

Thanks!
Sorry for the quick and short reply. Depending on your level of experience working with the vSphere APIs, there's a lot more that you may need to learn before you get to the point of being able to calling the CreateResourcePool() method. Although the vSphere PowerCLI includes the vSphere API for .NET, I would recommend that you consider using the vSphere Web Services SDK instead. If that's of interest to you, you can find some C# samples here; and the online API Reference Guide here.

VMware Server - this is a virtualization platform that is installed on top of a supported Windows or Linux O/S - This product is designed to provide a cnetralized virtualization platform to support a small work groupor number of servers - this is a free product and can be downloaded from vmware.com

VMware Player - this alows you to run a virtual machine on top of a supported Windowsor Linux O/S - you can not create a virtual machine with VMware Player -this is a free product and available for download

VMware ESXi -this is a virtualization product that runs on the bare metal does not require a pre-installed operating system - this is designed to support datacenters and the virtualization of physical servers for production. The entry level license of this is free and allows you to virtualize many servers and is available for download form vmware.com

VMware ESX - his is a virtualization product that runs on the bare metal does not
require a pre-installed operating system - this is designed to support
datacenters and the virtualization of physical servers for production.
The difference between ESXi and ESX is how they are managed. There is no free license available for ESX

VMware View - is design to run ontop of ESX or ESXi and provdes an environment to virtualize the company desktop -

I would reocmmend looking at VMware Serv or ESXi since these products are avilable for free - all of these products do come with 60 evaluation periods -

It may actually work. It depends which driver it uses. If it will work with the AACRAID driver(s) that ESX loads, then you should be good to go. Again, if it's not on the HCL, you may run into a support snag down the road...but I haven't before. Sorry for the broken link...here it is again:
Re: Grading VDR v1.1 - A, B, C, D, or F?

Stevester, I give VDR v1.1 an "A-" as a grade. I had some annoying issues with v1.0 that no longer appear in v1.1, and that boosted the grade up from a "C". The reason for the "A-" instead of the "A" is the need to use the separate File Leve Restores (FLR) command-line tool if I want to restore a file contained inside a VMDK. It would be nice to have that functionality built into the VDR plug-in so everything is done inside the vSphere Client. For now, you can only do full-image restores (or restore points) with the plug-in. Also, FLR only runs on a Windows system...meaning that it will only work with NTFS or FAT...not intended to work with Linux filesystems. Also, it doesn't support GPT. Overall, though, VDR is pretty nice. I like not needing to have a VCB proxy anymore, the integration as a vSphere plug-in makes it pretty slick, and the way it handles retention policies make it a nice "built-in" (or included with the price) backup tool.
Hi,

My physical host is a Mac with VMware Fusion installed, and the vms on it are WinXP, Vista and Win7. Now I need to get the physical host name from the vms, is there any VIX APIs commit to this task?

Or is there andy other workaround like passing the name with file or Windows register?

Thanks,

Re: ESX vs ESXi on the HCL

I agree with DSTAVERT. This is similar to this thread. This may sound sort of like a conspiracy theory, so to speak, but I don't think ESXi will show as supported for a particular server platform until the OEM signs off on it. Remember that ESXi means both the "installable" edition as well as "embedded". VMware doesn't fully control the embedded scenario, so even if the installable works, I don't think they can label it as "supported" until the OEM is willing to go support the "embedded" option as well. At least that's my opinion when it comes to HP. Since the big-3 OEMs basically release their own tweaked version with their CIM modules (similar to System Insight agents for HP, System Director agents for IBM, etc.), my guess is that HP is still working on both the DL160 G6 and the DL180 G6...and that the supported status is on the horizon. About your support call concern, though, I've had a couple of tickets opened on these non-HCL systems and VMware provided support. Call it lucky, maybe, but it could simply come down to the support technician that helps you. What I've recommended to customers is to go with the fully-loaded ESX 4 for now and plan for the transition to ESXi 4 once support is available.

Re: Viewing Wordpress sites in MAMP via vmware fusion

Thanks so much. I am starting to understand and now see what Mike meant by absolutely (I thought links had to be referenced absolutely in wordpress) and that he was referring to the php code.

1. Changing links to relative so I can view my sub pages:

I can see how to change my image links (they are in custom fields so I can adjust the URL) but not sure how to change the the page links. I did have a read through the link you sent me but couldn't see anything that related to changing menu links to relative. Here is the code I have in my header for the menu links:

main navigation

<?php wp_list_pages('title_li=&depth=1&sort_column=menu_order'); ?>

<!-- //mainNav -->

I couldn't see anything in the information you sent me about changing wp_list_pages links... not sure what I am even talking about here but assume that is what I need to do. Are you able to provide a little more information on how/where I should do this?

2. Finding IP address:

Sorry, am embarrassed to say I do not understand your instructions for this. Here are my questions:

1. Where do I go to to do the "Start - Run and type "cmd" and "ipconfig /all into? Is this on my mac? If so where? Or is it on the virtual pc and again where do I go for that? I did get my macs IP address the other day by entering a command (ifconfig vmnet1) into the Terminal. Thought I was pretty clever being able to do this - that is how 'new' I at this!). Is that the address I am needing?

I am so sorry for bugging you and really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

Kind regards, Lisa

I alo found the LSI card on amazon for $200 with cable, which seems like a good price to me.

Hi there. Just took a quick look to confirm, and it seems like the 2 best options that you'll have are either the Adaptec 2405 or the LSI SAS 3041E-R. The Adaptec card is a simple Adaptec SAS/SATA RAID card, but only supports RAID 0, 1, 10. It also requires a breakout cable for another $20 or so (not included with the card) that's a 4 SATA to 1 mini-SAS. If you're lucky, you may find someone offering a bundle that includes the card and the cable. The LSI Logic card isn't specifically referenced in the vSphere HCL; however, it's big brother is...the LSA SAS 3081E-R. They are the same chipset and driver...the only difference is that the 3081 is an 8-port card where ther 3041 is a 4-port card. But it works. It doesn't require a breakout cable as all ports are individually available on the card itself. Both are typically in the mid-$100 to $200 range, though. Don't believe there's a RAID card/HBA in the HCL for under $100 that vSphere supports supports VMFS. With that said, a quick Google search and I did find some retailers that had them for the price target that you're lucking for, or you may find one on eBay.
Yep, identical problem here too. MBP 17" 2008 running Snow Leopard w/ Spaces, Fusion 2.06 with a Windows7 evaluation copy.

Swapping between spaces renders the pointer to a stuck pointy fingered hand. Can sometimes revert it to a non-contextual pointer if you swap to another space and back again whilst keeping a mouse button clicked. But then as soon as you flick to the top of the screen and get the Fusion menu, the pointy hand comes back.

Have to say, this is the only real problem I have with 2.06. But it's a damn annoying one!!!
Does vmnet8 value == NAT gateway??

Hi community,

I rather new to vmware and have quick question. I just installed VMware Server on a Host Linux machine. It is running two GUEST vmware images (both linux images). After installing vmware on my HOST machine I obtained one new virtual nic (vmnet8) set to ip address 192.168.230.1.

I have statically assigned my two GUEST vmware images to 192.168.230.4 and 192.168.230.5 respectively (each with gateway *192.168.230.2*). I statically used this gateway address value since it appears in the NAT the /etc/vmware/vmnet/nat/nat.conf file.

Now I do apologize for my confusion but I don't actually appear to see the NAT virtual nic anywhere ... specifically and for clarity ... I am not able to see
the device caring the 192.168.230.2 address, again only the vmnet (*192.168.230.2*). In fact the only devices I see on my HOST are eth0, lo, and vmnet8.

I guess I would like to know/understand:

1. Is "vnmnet" == "NAT device"?
2. Should the address value assigned to vmnet8 be set to the NAT address/GUEST gateway? That is should I be changing the value of vmnet8 to 192.168.230.2 ?

Thanks for you time and apologize for the confusion.

I just wanted to update this and say that I installed Ubuntu 9.04 again, and this time paid attention to the sound. It works perfectly with my Win7/WS7 combination, and I think it still worked in 6.5.3. I also noticed that you don't get the application mixer in 9.04 like you get in 9.10, which I'm sure is just the surface of their change to using a sound server (pulseaudio) that they finished up with in 9.10. Well, I hope it's finished, because if it isn't then I expect it to be broken again in 10.04 in VMware WS7.
Make sure you don't have any files referenced absolutely as Mike said but you use the WordPress functions like bloginfo.

And to find the IP address be sure you to to Start - Run - type "cmd" and ipconfig /all to find the local IP address.

You can also set the URL in wp-config and not mess with the database.
I have eight servers in my LAN Room, four are Windows 2003, the others are Windows XP boxes that don't do a lot. I also have an MSA 1000. I am looking to upgrade my SAN and implement VMware in 2010. Replication to a DR site is a future requirement.

A number of vendors have been in for demos and all of them have asked me to run Perfmon collecting the counters listed below for a 24 hour period and email them the files. None of them will tell me what they are looking for. I can open them in excel but beyond that I'm not sure what they are doing with the numbers. People in our office travel often so I've been collecting these for two weeks and really don't want to ftp all of the files to the vendors.
\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Avg. Disk Bytes/Read

Can someone tell me what I should be looking at, I want to make sure I purchase the best system for our environment.

Are there other Perfmon counters I should be collecting?
Selecting a SAN (Interpreting Perfmon Disk IO Counters)

\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Disk Reads/sec
\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Disk Writes/sec
\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Disk Read Bytes/sec
\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Disk Write Bytes/sec
\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Avg. Disk Bytes/Read
\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Avg. Disk Bytes/Write

Can someone tell me what i should be looking at, I want to make sure I purchase the best system for our environment.

Are there other Perfmon counters I should be collecting?

Thank you.
2. Microsoft VSS driver working as per the test command: vssadmin list writers
vCenter pulls its users and groups from the local Windows server, or preferably, Active Directory. You would add your users there, and then assign permissions with those users within vCenter.

Hope that helps,
Hi NCSteve,

Yes, I even issue that command during the business hours, it only restart the ESXi mgmt. console daemon (VPXd) so the VM will be left running (harmless).

Try to have a look at the vssadmin list writers command result, if there is Event ID Error 12032, then you need to reconfigure the VSS Writer like in the following topic: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1403593#1403593
Re: Viewing Wordpress sites in MAMP via vmware fusion

Hi Mikero

Thanks once again for getting back to me so quickly. I really appreciate it.

1. I can assure you that my html and css config for the website is 100% correct for normal purposes. It works absolutely perfectly fine within my mac testing environment. If VM requires me to make adjustments to this so I can view my website in the virtual pc then you will need to instruct me on this. In saying that, if I have to make adjustments to the html/css/wp files and those adjustments mean I am unable to test these sites on my mac without changing the config back then this will not be an appropriate solution for me as too time consuming going backwards and forwards doing this.

2. The business between Fusion, Windows and my mac is definitely not complete. I can see apache and I can see the websites that have not been converted to wordpress correctly but for some reason VM is not able to pick up the database information in MAMP. There is definitely something I need to change in either MAMP, my mac or VM so Explorer in VM can 'see' the website files correctly.

3. I do not know what you mean by my "anchors and file references are fixed instead of realative'. Please remember that this is all quite new to me.

4. I do not know what you mean when you say 'is my code referencing locations like this: and OR. What code? Where do I go to check this code? Again, please remember that this is all quite new to me. I need 'for dummies' instructions.

5. You mentioned it might be helpful to see the source of a file from IE's point of view. Again, I do not know what you mean by this. Where would I get this information please?

6. I have had one reply back from another source I am trying to get help from which on the right track of sorting the problem. The suggestion was to go into wp-options within MAMP for the site I am testing and change the IP address within the URL to the IP address of the VM. I am still waiting to hear back as to where I find the IP address of the VM. I did change the IP address in MAMP, wp-options to my IP address of my computer as thought that might be what the person meant and doing that has enable the home page of the website to read the css files. There are still problems. The links are not coming through and none of the other pages are able to be viewed (IE says there is no website). These pages are various templates of the main theme. The URL reverts back to http://localhost:8888/slicecreative when I click on the link.

The fact that this change (in 6 above) has helped towards partially solving the problem should be an indication to you that it is not my code and that the problem. That there is something that needs to be reconfigured in either VM or MAMP for VM to pick up the files within MAMP. I know that it can be done as there are many people who use VM for the exact purpose I am using it for - that is how I came to purchase the software in the first place, referrals from others on various websites. I just can't find anyone that can tell me how to set it up properly. Believe me I am trying. The whole reason I purchased VM was that I did not have the time to set up the free option that I was going to use. I assumed there would be support and help with software that I purchased. It is turning out that I should have just gone ahead with the free option due to the amount of time it is taking me to get help on setting VM up properly with MAMP. I am surprised that your support team have not been asked for assistance in doing this in the past and that there are no user instructions for this.

Again, please, if possible could you just try to shift your thinking from 'it is a code issue and not a VM issue' and just for a moment and consider the possibility that there may be settings I need to change in MAMP, my mac or VM to enable VM to 'see' my database files? If I can't get this to work I have just wasted money on software that is going to essentially be useless to me.

Thank you very much.

Lisa
Need help! Windows XP VM created with migration assistant won't boot

I just got a new MacBook and I created a Windows XP virtual machine using VMware Fusion 3.0 and the Migration Assistant. However, when I start XP, after the initial Windows logo screen the screen goes blank, the cursor pops out and nothing happens. I can boot up the VM using Safe Mode but when I go back and try to restart in normal mode, the same problem happens. I've tried recreating the VM as well as the steps discussed in BM article 1013846 ti remount the SCSI drivers but I get the same results.
Hi all,

I cannot find any menu to create user in vCenter Server. But I see users from the XP host. Does it mean we create the user from the XP?

================================

Adaptec MaxIQ™ SSD Cache

Intel X25-E SATA
Adaptec MaxIQ SSD.
Adaptec MaxIQ SSD Cache
Performance Kit
Learned-Path Algorithm
Adaptec MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Kit,
Intel
Adaptec Series 5Z, Series 5
и Series 2.

(SLES), SCO OpenServer, UnixWare, Sun Solaris 10x86, FreeBSD
