SQL Code to send updates on performance utilization
I wrote some SQL code to query the VirtualCenter database and give me a monthly roll up of performance metrics on my VMs. This can be helpful when adjusting reservations.

Here's one for CPU usage:

EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail

@recipients = '<yourname>@<yourcompany.com>',

@subject = 'Virtual Center CPU Utilization Report',

@body_format = 'HTML',

@body = 'Here are some CPU utilization metrics for the last month.',

@query = '

USE VirtualCenter

DECLARE @time datetime

SET @time = (SELECT MAX(SAMPLE_TIME) FROM VirtualCenter.dbo.VPXV_HIST_STAT_MONTHLY)

SELECT vms.NAME as ''Virtual Machine''

,STAT_VALUE as ''CPU Usage in MHz''

FROM VirtualCenter.dbo.VPXV_HIST_STAT_MONTHLY

JOIN VPXV_VMS vms

ON SUBSTRING(ENTITY ,4 , 4) = vms.VMID

WHERE (ENTITY like ''vm%'')

AND (SAMPLE_TIME = @time)

AND (STAT_NAME = ''usagemhz'')

ORDER BY NAME

',

@attach_query_result_as_file = 1,

@query_attachment_filename = 'Virtual Machine CPU Stats.xls'

The one for memory was a little more complicated as VC doesn't track the average MB used by a server on a monthly basis. I had to roll this up manually:

EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail

@recipients = '<yourname>@<yourcompany.com>',

@subject = 'Virtual Center Memory Utilization Report',

@body_format = 'HTML',

@body = 'Here are some memory utilization metrics for the last month.',

@query = '

USE VirtualCenter

select

vms.NAME as ''VIRTUAL_MACHINE''
VMWare Player and Auto Defragging
Hi All,

Was hoping you guys could help me with a question i have.

I have several workstation running VMWare Player and they are in need of defragging on a regular basis. Some of these workstations have several images depending on what the customer selects. Is there an included executable, command line option, or other way to start defraging the image besides starting up the player and selecting the defrag option? What i would like to do is from a remote machine execute a command on the workstations to start a defrag. Is this possible, or do you have any ideas?

Thanks,

November 8th, 2007 PDX VMUG Documents, Vol. I

I'll be attaching any public sessions from our 11/8/2007 VMUG session here. AT least the first 3. So here are my docs

I've attached a migration procedure from ESX 2. to 3. hosts. I didn't bother polishing, but there's a lot of good troubleshooting info and it's very safe for us in that anything that can go wrong has and we have our fixes in place and precautionary backups as well. This was at the request of a user at the meeting.

If you have something to contribute post it or send it to me. PM if you don't have my email already.

Carlos is also able to edit this doc.
