Vendor Presentations
I was looking for any vendor forms that fit your description rather than recreating the wheel and haven't had much luck. This is a one of those issues that's hard to quantify - where to draw the line between a sales pitch and tech info - but people come to these events looking for what your product does differently from the competition. Certainly I wouldn't want vendors to start flaming the other guys, yet I think you can still mention them in the context of how you might do things differently and why it is better - or not.

While I have some ideas on defining presentation parameters and expectations in the future, I would like to hear your ideas. We each have a perception of where the line is crossed - what do you think is an appropriate way to handle and/or define this?

Toledo VMUG Updates - August-September 2009

The following have been posted under the Documents tab in this forum:

Toledo area vSphere Bootcamp training class info. The class will be at the end of September and as of 8/24/09 there were only 3 seats remaining

EMC slides from the July meeting

VMware VI3 VCP Study Guide

I plan to post lists of VMware 3rd party products and northwest Ohio VMware vendors to ease the search pain for our VMUG members & end users looking for information. If you would like to contribute your favorites, email them to me at VMUG.TOL@gmail.com. No spam please! This will be an evolving effort as products change and new vendors enter the market.
Anyone interested in a ThinApp presentation?
Someone at VMware is interested in presenting on ThinApp for VMUG groups. At this point it is in the "who's interested" phase (for which I raised my hand). To help get on the list, I need to give them a date range we would be available. Since Veeam is already set to sponsor the regular September meeting and November is too far out for many of us that have to submit 2010 IT budgets, I would like to schedule an "extra" meeting for people wanting to know more about it. My proposal is to ask for a date in July or early August. The scheduling for a meeting place gets tricky unless I have a rough idea of how many people might come and how much notice VMware will give me.

If you are interested in an out-of-band VMUG meeting for a VMware ThinApp presentation, you can email me at VMUG.TOL@gmail.com I'm looking first for people who want to come and second, for any date suggestions. Keep in mind that VMware World runs Aug. 31-Sep. 3 so a week or so either side of that will be out.

You are welcome to expand discussion of the topic here. The email option is to avoid threads here turning into a giant ball of string.

Announcement of local VMware Event - Thursday May 7th

Here is the information on the upcoming event at Cabella's in Dundee, MI that I referred to in todays VMUG meeting: *

Data Center Transformation Through Virtualization - Event sponsored by VMware, Cisco, EMC, and DMC Technology Group

http://www.cisco.com/go/semreg/cc_datacentertransformationthroughvirtualization5_7dundee/html
Dundee, MI 48131

How will the Data Center of the Future look?

The availability of multi-core processors, rapid adoption of data center virtualization, and widespread use of network-based storage systems has led to an increasing demand for I/O within the data center.

These increasing demands have been met with a new wave of innovation, setting the stage for a dramatic transformation in how data centers are architected.

Cisco, EMC, VMware, and DMC Technology Group will discuss how a consolidated network can greatly simplify server, network, and storage infrastructures, while providing customers with business continuity, disaster recovery, and high-availability solutions. We will also show how all of this can now be implemented in parallel through a virtualized architecture.

Agenda

Toledo VMUG Startup

Welcome to the Toledo, OH VMUG Community. Meetings can be held in the surrounding area - if you have a facility large enough to accomadate the group, please let me know at the meeting or post a response to this thread here. How large will the group be? We don't know yet, but the bigger, the better! The initial mailing list is over 125 people! I would also like to extend a welcome to people in southern Michigan to join the group.

The goals I have for this group are simple:

create the opportunity for VMware users to share their experience and for people looking for solutions to find help and recommendations

bring VMware representatives and 3rd party vendors to our area for easier access to technology briefings and product information as it relates to VMware (no sales pitches)

provide educational opportunities

There will be time set aside at each meeting for people to network and share their success stories - or less than successful ones. The vendor and presenter selections will be made based upon member requests and relevance to product solutions so feel free to let me know what you would like to see.

The success of any group like this is based upon it's member participation. This can be as simple as sharing your story to volunteering your help with meetings. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the meetings.

P.S. - If you haven't registered for the May 1, 2009 meeting in Sylvania, you can do so here: http://campaign.vmware.com/usergroup/ug-signup.php?session=Toledo

Hope to see you there! - Kim Mensior
