Why does MOB does not return the MOR sometimes?
Hi,

I am connecting to a VSphere Vcenter4.0. Using this Session I am trying to get the Managed Object Reference of a particular managed entity programatically. Sometimes we have the MOR returned null, both programatically and thru MOB as well.

If any one of you had a similar issue please provide the details. Why does this happen when we have a valid connection and valid managed entity working properly on the Vcenter.

Thanks

Having same issue and also looking for an answer. in vSphere client there seems to be new column runtimeName, which provides needed information for ESX/i 4..0. However there does not seem to be way to get this runtimeName via VI SDK.

And this issue is there for SAN attached LUNs as well, in addition to iSCSI.

Incompatible Class Change Error
Following the example included with the SDK, I wrote an app to try and connect to VMWare, but I'm getting an error message telling me that I have an Incompatible Class Change Error:

Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.IncompatibleClassChangeError: Expected non-static field com.vmware.ws.service.BaseServiceStub._service
at com.vmware.ws.service.BaseServiceStub.<init>(BaseServiceStub.java:119)
at com.vmware.ws.service.BaseServiceStub.<init>(BaseServiceStub.java:108)
at com.vmware.ws.service.BaseServiceStub.<init>(BaseServiceStub.java:159)
at com.vmware.contrib.vi.Connection.<init>(Connection.java:78)

And it has a few more listed. Here is the block of code:

import com.vmware.contrib.vi.Connection;

        String uname = jTextField1.getText();
String pass = jTextField2.getText();
String server = jTextField3.getText();
String protocol = jTextField4.getText();

Connection.Parameters config = new Connection.Parameters(
Connection.Protocol.http, server, null, uname, pass, null);

try{

Connection con = new Connection(config);

}catch(com.vmware.vi.fault.InvalidLogin e)
{

}catch(com.vmware.vi.fault.InvalidLocale f)
{

}

And it's the line Connection con = new Connection(config) which causes the problem. Debugging, I found that everything else works fine and I get legit login information (server, protocol, etc.) Once it gets to that line, it causes the error.

Anyone have a clue why I'm getting the error and/or what "com.vmware.ws.service.BaseServiceStub._service" is?

I obtained the certificate file using java keystore tool and then i added the following lines in my code for logging into the web service

System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStore","path for the keystore");

org.apache.axis.client.Stub clientStub = (org.apache.axis.client.Stub) WEB_SERVICE;
org.apache.axis.client.Call call = clientStub._getCall();
org.apache.axis.MessageContext msgContext = call.getMessageContext();
sessionID = (String) msgContext.getProperty(org.apache.axis.transport.http.HTTPConstants.HEADER_COOKIE);

and then i printed out the API version details.Then i call the method for getting VM details(name,runtime.powerState).But the objectContent[] returned is null.But i am able to get the VM details if i execute this method(method for getting VM details) alone in a seperate program(as given in sample programs).Any idea?

Hi all,

I solved my problem. Had to add LicenseFilePrintData to Sysprep. Just adding the follwing snippet before customspec.setIdentity(sysprep); will do the work

            CustomizationLicenseFilePrintData licenseFilePrintData=new CustomizationLicenseFilePrintData();
+            licenseFilePrintData.setAutoMode(CustomizationLicenseDataMode.perSeat);+
+            licenseFilePrintData.setAutoUsers(5);+
+            sysprep.setLicenseFilePrintData(licenseFilePrintData);+
Incorporating Steve Jin's VIJava API?

I believe there are no plans at the moment. It's too bad really as Steve's VI Java is so embarrassingly better than the VI SDK for Java or the VI SDK, it makes you wonder about the decision to NOT use VI Java.

Changes to the ESX Service Console for ESX 4.0
Please check the attched document for more information.

This technical paper discusses incompatibilities between the ESX 3.5 service
console and the ESX 4.0 service console. Included are suggestions of what you might do to upgrade your
existing environments that depend on the ESX service console. This document also discusses how you might
bridge the gap to support ESXi, which does not include a service console. And finally, if you are currently
writing applications that run in the ESX service console, this document suggests some possible options you
have for transitioning away from it.

Issues using CustomizeVM_Task
I have resolved this isuse. Here are the steps I did to perform a customization on an rPathOS

1. Install VMTools (open vm tools)
2. created a file "/etc/redhat-release" (I copied from another red hat host)

Once I performed those two steps all works like money.

no capacity information in com.vmware.vi.host.ScsiDisk.Partition
Hi

VmfsVolume.getExtent() returns an array of ScsiDisk.Partition. All these partitions are coming from SCSI disk devices.

Theoritically you can have multiple partitions in a disk. And these partitions can be added to a data store (VmfsVolume). so, obviously each partition will have it's own capacity or size and if you add the capacity of all partitions in a scsi disk, you'll get the total capacity of the disk. so, shouldn't capacity be there for each partition. i don't see any getters to get that from ScsiDisk.Partition. is it provided anywhere else?

thanks
Without the credentail, you can only see the about info of the ESX server.
We are considering to even block the about info for adding more security.
VI SDK lets you manage ESX server(s) as well as virtual center server (the one which managed virtual infrastructure)

You need credentials to connect to both the servers. However, if you have already added esx servers into virtual center console then you could query them all through vc server instead of going through several esx boxes.

You could browse through manageobject browser or connect to webservice:
https://esxhost-or-vcserver.fqdn.com/sdk
Finding a ScsiLun.Lun using key
hi,

i have a related question. i'm trying to find the device wwn associated with a scsi lun.

it is there in ScsiTopology.Lun.getKey(). but it is part of a bigger string. i'm trying to figure out the format of the string to parse out the wwn.

Here's a sample.

02001b0000600601601f20220048b0e0a6720fde11524149442035

i tried to guess this string

0200 1b 0000 600601601f20220048b0e0a6720fde11 524149442035

1b is the lun because getLun() gives me 27. so, in hex it's 1b. The bold part is wwn(world wide name of the scsi lun). i'm not sure what's the last part.

my question is if i skip first 10 bytes and last 12 bytes, the rest in the middle is wwn?

i think more documentation on the format of these keys will help as these keys have some useful information buried(in this case device wwn).

thanks

Not it is not. That was an open source project started independent of this one. Our goal is to solicit feedback from the community on
this toolkit and eventually make this a supported toolkit from VMware. We will be putting out updates to this technology preview every
few months and enhancing its capability, performance, etc. If there are capabilities that the community feels are missing, we are
happy to incorporate them as well.

README - VMware Infrastructure SDK for Java Technology Preview
VMware Infrastructure SDK for Java Technology Preview

This archive contains a preview of some of the technology being developed for the upcoming VMware Infrastructure SDK for Java. It defines a Java binding of the VI API. Managed objects, data objects, and faults are all represented as first-class elements of the programming model in this Java API, allowing for a style of programming that is simple and natural for Java developers.

While this preview showcases just the Java binding of the VI API, the VI SDK for Java when it is released will contain much more. The features under development include utilities for simplifying common operations, such as managing client-server connections and traversing the inventory tree. They include mechanisms for managing bulk queries of information, enabling the API to be used while still maintaining efficient control over the flow of client-server communication. And they include ways to define custom views of the object model, to help clients to focus on just the parts of the API that relate to their own particular requirements. Look for these features and more in future releases.
To allow experimentation with the Java API that is the focus of this technology preview, a small set of utilities is provided here to do such things as establish client-server connections and find entities in the inventory tree. Use these to "bootstrap" your way into the more interesting parts of the API. These utilities will not be part of the final SDK for Java; their functionality will be subsumed by more flexible and comprehensive utilities such as those described above.
The API itself consists of the packages com.vmware.core and com.vmware.vi and their subpackages. The utilities for experimenting with the API are in the package com.vmware.contrib.vi. Sample code is in the package com.vmware.sample.vi.

Contents of this Archive

doc
Javadoc documentation for the API, the utilities for experimenting with the API, and the sample applications.
Note: due to the way the API source code is being preprocessed to create this documentation, there are some problems in the resulting Javadoc. Some of the package names in links are incorrect, and some type names in the text refer to the web service that underlies the VI API. These problems will be corrected in a future release. We hope, for now, that the meaning will be clear enough from context.

lib
Libraries (jar files) needed to program against the API or to run the sample applications.

src
Source code for the sample applications.

Supported platforms
This release supports VMware Infrastructure 3.5 and later, including ESX 3.5 and vCenter Server 2.5.

Requirements

The following software is required to use the SDK for Java: Java SE 6
Sun's implementation, either JDK 6 or JRE 6, can be downloaded from here. Alternately, any IDE that supports Java SE 6 may be used.
Apache Axis2, version 1.4 or later
The Axis2 web services engine can be downloaded from here.

Setting the Class Path
The libraries included with this archive (in the lib directory) and those included with Axis2 (in its own lib directory) should be added to the Java class path. For example, on Windows you might have:
set VISDK4J_HOME=C:\visdk4java
set AXIS_HOME=C:\axis2-1.4.1
set CLASSPATH=%VISDK4J_HOME%\lib\*;%AXIS_HOME%\lib\*
and on Linux:
VISDK4J_HOME=/usr/local/visdk4java
AXIS_HOME=/usr/local/axis2-1.4.1
export CLASSPATH="$VISDK4J_HOME/lib/*:$AXIS_HOME/lib/*"
