Great instructions. I followed them all but when I browse to the webpage, I don't get any links to download the client. All I get is the ability to reboot/shutdown, configure the network our logout. Did I miss something?

Cannot connect to VC on Linux

I was experiencing the same problem: nothing on http://ip-of-appliance when using the Oracle_On_VMware virtual appliance as database server.

Turned out the Oracle database wasn't created (properly). Resolved it with the following steps:

Used the Oracle web interface to create a database user and gave this user dba rights B-)# .

On the VC4Linux appliance ran /usr/sbin/vpxd_odbcconfig to connect to Oracle and create the database.

Now the familiar VirtualCenter welcome / Getting started page appears on http://ip-of-appliance.

Vi-client you download there is still the Windows version

template deployment on linux vcenter

Hello,
it is possible to use sysprep customisation of deployed guest OS template on linux-vcenter? If it is, how...? I've found folder /etc/vmware-vpx/sysprep/, but when I put sysprep files here, it still does not offer me options of customizing deployed template.
Thanks.

vCenter on Linux dumping core every 2 days for an offline ESX 3.5u4 host?

In looking for the vpxd logs for an unrelated post below, I noticed vpxd is core dumping every two days. The vpxd.log and core file are 39 MB compressed so I have put them here: http://senduit.com/8d4620 (valid for one week from date of this posting).

The only host that is registered to this vCenter is offline at the moment. This looks like vCenter is attempting to heartbeat that ESX 3.5u4 host that is offline, here's the stack trace:
Hello,

Proper mail handling will be necessary for vCenter for Linux. Adding in ssmtp while doable should not be necessary, so I think its another item for VMware to fix in the JeOS of the vCenter for Linux. Plus a way to configure it.
We are aware of the DB issues, and we are working on a better set of options. For my development, I started out with OracleXE in a separate VM. This is where I would advise you to start. In the future, we will be supporting Oracle and DB2 at a minimum. Beyond that, there is a lot of pressure for an embedded Database, just like you said. That is as much as I can really say at this time, but we hear you. I will leave you with this: the VC LInux project started because engineers at VMware recongized the need and quality of running VC on Linux, and only later was it accepted as a key piece of corporate strategy.

Excellent to hear that. I really believe that as the the full impact of your technology becomes apparent it will be more and more important not to have dependencies that are owned by key competitors (such as Oracle and MS). Avoiding such dependencies may sometimes be hard, but after seeing that you appear to have achieved it with vCenter Data Recovery I'm really encouraged.

While an "embedded" database would be nice, if it has limitations on the size of supported infrastructure please be sure that a freely available database is also available as a supported option in a separate installation.
You need to create same networking configuration and connect box esx box with shared storage network so they can share same VM configuration and VMDK and then test VMotion you should migarte vm on esx01 to esx02 like right click on VM click on migrate button and then select destionation esx host where you want to move your machine after selecting dest. it will vaildate your configuration with destination and if success go ahead and select priority and finish wizard.. and then there you go....your machine will migrate on other host after few min. if this work then easy to implement HA and DRS..

if this anwer satisfied your need. give me point for it.

Create Databases?

shankarunni wrote:Unfortunately it's a significant amount of work to make it work with a different database. vCenter server doesn't have a convenient O/R layer that hides the differences between the underlying databases, so a port to a new database involves a large number of changes where we have had to account for the minor and major differences between the variousdatabases that we support. Stored procedures, in particular, are a big pain.

We are looking at the possibility of adding one of the open-source databases to our supported database set. Personally, however, I'm a little wary of MySQL, because we have strong transactionality and performance requirements. Postgres is a more likely choice if we do go down that path, but we are definitely interested in receiving feedback on this topic.

Ditto, Ditto, Ditto. Please not MySQL, maybe it is great for LAMP stuff but not so much in other arenas. PostgreSQL support would be an EXCELLENT addition and PostgreSQL has lots of documentation on porting Oracle applications.
