3 things I am going to remember about VCDX process.

Almost everybody who has been involved in VCDX process can admit that the process goes very slowly. And always there is a pause/waiting/delay in the process. You wait for review, authorization, results, invitation to defense, email response etc. The worst thing is that nobody knows how long you have to wait. It seems to be quite random.

In my opinion the VCDX process is premature…

VMware is a great company with excellent solutions. But I feel they have not put enough resources and time on VCDX. This is not for criticizing VMware, but a call for improved and streamlined process.

If I one day get finished with my VCDX certification process, I am going to remember 3 things:

1.	Waiting
2.	Waiting
3.	Waiting

VCDX Defense, what's it like?

As long as the whole of your design is comprehensive and can help someone get from a pile of servers, storage and network gear to a functional VMware architecture then you should be fine.

If a customer wants you to place a specific piece of information into a document that you feel its out of place then it shouldn't cast you in a negative light (at least in my opinion.) The end goal is to make sure you are capable of making architecture decisions and can confidently act as a VMware expert.

It should be the case. You may be given a different candidate ID though from the testing center. If you're VCP number 35 then you should still be VCP number 35 when the 4.X cert arrives at your door.

As a reference my VCP number has remained the same since my 2.5 days.

With framework I guess we are talking about specific requirements stated in the VCDX Defense Application Form. There's no need to use VMware PSO Templates at all. I actually prefer people not using default templates as it shows specific skills.

There's a whole bunch of defense tips to be found on my blog:
http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2009/10/01/vcdx-tips-from-vcdx-001-john-arrasjid/
VCDX version 4 (vSphere edition) eta

It's all in development currently. VMware are working on vSphere versions of both the Enterprise Administration and Design exams - no release dates have been announced. They are now accepting vSphere-centric designs for the Design Defence, but that's for those who have done VCP3 + Enterprise3 + Design3 - so you will still end up as a VCDX3 even if you were to submit and defend a vSphere design.

It's definitely going to be the exam versions that will define the VCDX version - so until there are confirmed release dates for the v4 Enterprise Administration and Design exams, I doubt we'll hear too much announced officially. I'm interested in the "upgrade" process for those that are part way through (like me!) and those lucky few that have already got VCDX3.....
Turnaround times for VCDX phases
The only people who have been through the process in its entirety were part of beta phases of some of the various tests.

Here's a guestimation from start to finish (it's the best anyone can do):

Sit enterprise admin exam and pass; ~2 weeks you should be invited to the design exam or could at least schedule it.

Sit design exam and pass; ~2-3 weeks you should recieve a VCDX design application.

Then its variable; if you submit your application within 2 weeks of an event then you can sit your defense at that event.

In theory, if you started today you could make a defense at Partner Central.

VCDX Design Exam - Availability
Thanks a lot, guys! All of you!

This is my preparation so far:

I have been reading all information from Yellow-bricks and other blogs plus whitepapers/docs from VMware. I have also read the course material.

I have a feeling that this is not a kind of exam that you pass just by reading books. Real world experience is also very important (usually you have done some reading or studying before real world experience).

The last thing which is important is the language. I believe English speaking test takers have more chance to pass the exam than non-English.

Thanks a lot again and cross your fingers for me! I am taking the exam on Thursday this week.

Regards

I was a beta participant and unluckily have failed the exam but after months of waiting I still didn't receive the official results. I have to do a day drive to Frankfurt again before the first of January without even knowing how I did ion my beta test. I'm beginning to ask myself if it's worth the 365 Euros, since this exam is still based on the 3.5 version. On the other hand, how long do we have to wait for an upgrade path?

Enterprise Admin Exam - 3rd Question from the End Killed ESX Servers
I think I know which question we are on about here, and unfortunatly I left it as it was because my question said to put it in that order -- I wrote on my card my "working out" showing that the question had asked me to do something, and that it was already set up that way... I just hope that the card was sent off to Vmware.. otherwise it looks like I just skipped a question!

Maybe I should have said something to my moderator (than again it was her first day on the job and had no idea what the exam was about!)
Hi,
I am studying for the VCDX and the Enterprise Admin exam and was
looking around at some of the community guides (which are great!) but i
didnt really find anything that was what i was looking for. So i
decided to write one up myself. It began as a mix/max/syntax doc, then
i decided to build it up as something to give to my students as further
reading. It is v0.1 probably has typos in it, but hopefully no
glaringly WRONG content Have uploaded as a .doc so you guys can edit
as you see fit for your own purposes. If anyone wants to contribute to
it, PM me as i would welcome it!
Anyway - enjoy!
Has anyone got instructions on how to send the Design for Defense ?
Once you have passed the Design Exam, you will receive an email about what to submit and how to submit it. You can use a real or fictional design. My feeling is that if you have a recent real project that you designed, use it because you will be familiar with all the moving parts. I wouldn't think that including complementary third party products would be rejected as long as you can defend your reasons for including them. Just like the thrid party options, when choosing architecture specifics, like the database, server hardware and storage, you just need to defend your decisions. There are countless "right" ways to create a virtualized infrastructure. Each of these become "right" based on budget, standard operating procedures, vendor alliances, etc.
Tom,

I'm guessing you mean the content in the document section, which is: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10386 This is the live lab demonstration. The Enterprise Mock Exam is on the Certification page of the VMware website, but here is a direct link as well: http://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrSurvey/assessLogin.cfm?item=11292&user=9223&refer=0&p=0&ui=Full
Module 7 of the 3.5 DSA course, which is Module 13 of the Fast Track course, covers all of this content.

To match each of the objectives with a bit more detail:

1. You need to familiarise yourself with logs used by VirtualCenter, both on the VC server and the ESX servers, and how to customise logging levels and rotation settings via vpxd.cfg and vpxa.cfg files.
2. Again familiarise yourself the other logs in the SC in /var/log, and also what you can modify in the log rotation policies for SC logs in /etc/logrotate.d
3. You need to know how vmklogger and syslogd work, and how to configure /etc/syslog.conf and enable syslog to both send and receive logged events.

I hope that helps.

Hi Peter

The enterprise exam is more pratical than the VCP exam. You have to know how work and be configure all VMware component (network, storage, backup...). The blueprint is realy close to the exam content (have a deep look to all topic).

Good luck

can we give VCDX exam in India
VMware recently announced

Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Korea South, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, & Japan

The VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) on VMware Infrastructure 3 is an advanced certification developed for design architects of VMware enterprise deployments. There are four core validation components to achieve VCDX.

(1) Must be certified as a VMware Certified Professional (VCP) on VMware Infrastructure 3.
(2) Pass the VMware Enterprise Administration Exam. Includes live labs and tests a higher level of skill set than the exam for VCP on VMware Infrastructure 3.
(3) Pass the VMware Design Exam. This exam focuses on actual design scenarios and contains simulations and situational questions.
(4) Submit, present and defend a successful VMware Infrastructure design and implementation plan. The Enterprise Exam is available this month.

Think you might qualify as a VCDX?
Check your skills here! Follow this link to our qualification review. This is a required first step for those who want to pursue the VMware Certified Design Expert certification. Only those who meet qualifications will continue on to take the exams. You will need to login to take this review:
What are the details required in a Design Plan and Defend part of VDCX exam!

Jason - I believe that is their plan - this I believe is their version of the CCIE - making it difficult to obtain - I really think you will find VCDX in three situations - working in VMware's PSO, at a VMware Authorized Consultant or alrge enterprise with hundreds of hosts and thousands of VMs - with the interim tests there should interim certifications -

VCDX Enterprise Admin exam; an intermediary between VCP and VCDX?
I was at VMware Partner Xchange in San Diego. I talked to a number of VMware badged employees. As for the VCDX, VMware is not planning to make money on the exam. They had to write their own test engines for both exams from scratch. As for the review board, initially the panel will consist of VMware PSO's. After that, any of us who have passed the entire track, will sit on the board where people will have to defend their design to us. There are over 20000 VCP's worldwide, however they do not expect more than 100 (one hundred) VCDX worldwide. It will be expensive due to travel costs, but that will be about it.

I do know that they are toying with the idea of interim certs, but that is still in discussion.
