Why you do not consider to use the management interface of the your server?
ILOE or DRAC works well and can also redirect the CD and manage the power of your system.
Virtualization Management Solution: Free 7 Month Trial
In the beginning of September, Tek-Tools Software announced a pre-release version of VProfiler, a virtualization
management solution for early stage virtualized environments. Since then we have been getting questions about
the difference between vProfiler and our Flagship product Profiler for VMware.

Let's compare these two products.

vProfiler

vProfiler is an extremely simple, easy-to-use, and powerful analysis, reporting, and monitoring tool, best suited for up to three ESX hosts.
vProfiler is designed so that small VMware environment administrators can deploy and start using it in minutes
to immediately understand how their resources are being utilized.

"With increasing frequency over the past several months, we have been encountering customers with a need for
management and visibility of a relatively small virtualized environment, but they don't need nor do they
have the budget for larger management frameworks." says Ken Barth, president and CEO, Tek-Tools.

Created with the most common tasks a VMware administrator faces in mind, vProfiler answers common questions such as:

How many more VMs can I add to this host?

Which resource will I run out of first?

Which VMs are consuming the majority of my resources (CPU, storage, memory)?

vProfiler provides reporting, monitoring, capacity analysis and performance analysis for day-to-day
use without having to worry about software clients, firewalls, or application speed.

To see a competitive matrix, please visit http://www.tek-tools.com/blog/index.php/vprofiler.

vProfiler is available for a free trial for up to seven months (registered renewal required after 30 days).
Upon completion of the free trial period, users can purchase the software for a one time fee of $195 for up to three ESX hosts.

vProfiler can be downloaded from the Tek-Tools website, http://www.tek-tools.com/blog/index.php/vprofiler

Profiler for VMware

Profiler for VMware is an enterprise virtualization management solution now in use by some of the world's largest virtualized enterprises.
It's one of a kind solution for large enterprises, especially when combined with Storage Profiler and the other IT resource management
modules in our Profiler Suite.

Profiler for VMware provides agent-less, cross-domain visibility, management, and intelligence from applications through servers, network, and storage.

Main features include:

Auto-discovery

Capacity planning

Performance monitoring on ESX hosts & VM guests

VMDK file utilization

Storage utilization trending & forecasting at the VMDK level

Storage mapping to SAN devices (Fiber Channel switches, arrays)

Real-time & historical analysis

Alerting

Profiler for VMware comes with a free 30 day trial. To download a free white-paper about Profiler for VMware please visit, http://www.tek-tools.com/blog/index.php/virtual/.

Snapshot is an deal tool to recover formt hat botched software install/update - because it will allow you to revert to the exact of the VM priot to the start of the install - you will just have to mandate to your users that they have a fixed time to confirm that the update/install was successful because at the end of that time period you will committ the changes unless you hear differently - the documentation is really aimed at people who will run snapshots indefinitely -
Hello + Next Steps

vJoe3970 wrote:Thanks Saadat, that's a lot of different resources + I'll take a look at them.

Yes, I've already installed ESX 3.5, Infrastructure 3 and have created a datacenter, cluster and resource pool. I've already
tested vmotion on a test vm and it works good. There's a push to start getting this put into production but I need to ensure
I have all my duck's in a row before moving ahead. I need to ensure things are configured right the first time.

Thanks again!

Ok,

In that Case what I recommend is to put load on your esx Servers and make sure all redundant parts of your infrastructure works fine, and you can test it.

For example. do a test for HA by unplugging your ESX Server with a high load on your hosts.

I will ssume you have considered redundeny in your network design (for example for iSCSI traffic at least two physical Switches) or multiple uplinks for each port group communication. if So try to unplug one of your switches and see how your network effects and then bring the switch back on line and try to troubleshoot or bring back all your ESX Servers. Also you can unplug one of your uplinks and see how it effects your environment. This is the best time to practice these before you go to production.

Good luck

This might be an obvious question but with the massive global demand for engineers why aren't you trying to get an engineering job? I used to work for an engineering company doing IT and they were paying engineering people a fortune as there is such a high demand for engineers like yourself. Have you looked at engineering jobs in South Africa? As from experience i know there's large companies looking for engineers constantly and with the 2010 world cup there there's even a bigger demand.
Hi Gregg,

Thanks for your reply! I am looking for engineering jobs, as well as IT jobs. I enjoy both fields and although I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, I'm still interested in virtualisation.

The demand for engineers in the UK is not high and unfortunately the jobs that are advertised require many years experience which I do not have. The same is true for virtualisation jobs. You need experience, but if no one gives me a chance to show what I can do whether it be in IT or engineering then getting that experience is very difficult.

I have not looked at South Africa, but if you have any contacts I would be very interested.

Thanks
Job offer - reduce headcount with VMware

I think hunter is absolutely correct on his approach and that is what I was thinking of doing. Neil, I'll just have to go in and find out who is pushing for a "VMware = less headcount". I decided to go ahead and accept the offer (they really made an offer I couldn't refuse). I've been with my current employer for about a year and a half (in the banking industry), it has been a great place to work and I did a lot of cutting edge stuff with VMware for the company, but they really abuse salary employees and I've got a not so great team lead, so it's time to move on. The company I'm moving to is someone I've always wanted to work for. For me, it ranks up there with being able to work for VMware.
Cloud Computing holds enormous potential for enterprises trying to optimize infrastructure resources, improve the reliability of services, and reduce costs. Because virtualization technology and cloud computing is changing the way IT resources are utilized, organizations can now take advantage of distributed architecture and extend applications and IT infrastructure into the cloud while maintaining the levels of security, control, service, and compliance needed for next generation data centers.

Community Member Showcase (September 2009): Stephen Beaver - sbeaver

Stephen Beaver (*sbeaver*) is currently Virtualization Evangelist at Tripwire, and a VMware Certified Professional (VCP). Stephen is a co-author of two books on virtualization, Essential VMware ESX Server, and Scripting VMware Power Tools: Automating Virtual Infrastructure Administration. In addition, he is Technical Editor of VMware ESX Server: Advanced Technical Design Guide, and a contributing author to How to cheat at configuring VMware ESX Server. A respected pundit on virtualization technology, Stephen is a frequently-requested speaker at venues such as VMworld, the VMware Virtualization Forum, and the VMware Healthcare Forum.

Stephen is an active community expert in VMware's weekly online show, Community Round Table Panel, and is a moderator and one of the most active participants of the VMware Community forums. In fact, Stephen was recently named a 2009 VMware vExpert, an award given to individuals who have significantly contributed to the community of VMware users and helped spread the word about virtualization over the past year.

Prior to joining Tripwire, Stephen was a systems engineer with one of the largest private hospitals in the United States, Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida, where he was responsible for the entire virtualization life cycle - from strategic planning to design and test, integration and deployment, to operations management. Prior to Florida Hospital, Stephen served as a Senior Engineer at the law firm Greenberg Traurig where he designed and deployed the firm's virtual infrastructure worldwide. He has also held posts at Lockheed Martin, the State of Nebraska, and The World Bank.

Bloggers & Twitterers at VMworld 2009

Dear Bloggers & Twitterers at VMworld 2009

Please add yourself if you're coming to VMworld! Personal feeds only, please. Feeds for corporate entities (ie, partners & exhibitors) should get emailed to jtroyer@vmware.com and we'll do those in a separate document.

Log in and click on "Edit Document" in the Actions box on the right

Click on the table where you'd like your name. (Right now it's alphabetical by last name, but I'll clean up any messes by importing this back into a spreadsheet, so feel free just to add yourself to the end.

If you are using the Rich Text editor tab, click on one of the buttons "Add Row Before" or "Add Row After" and do your thing.

If you are using the Plain Text editor tab, enter your data separated by | characters.

Click "Publish"

And voila. If you do this by Friday I'll try to get you a snazzy blogger badge at the show. See here for more information about blogging at VMworld If you are on Twitter, here's more about our VMworld Tweetup on Monday @ 8pm during the Welcome Reception.

Update: if you are a blogger on this list, and you would like to attend a press/analyst event with Paul Maritz about the Cloud at 10:45am Tuesday, email me jtroyer@vmware.com.
And yes, VM will pull data from host.

must have tools for a Linux VMware admin ?

Forget it. I don't mean the Windows package from Mono, I mean the Linux-Mono. And the Lin-Mono doesn't communicate with Wine for camouflage itself as DOTNET. The Linux-Mono only will run for linux applications like some of the newer GNOME apps ...

Some new useful apps: fsarchiver (http://www.fsarchiver.org) for saving nearly any filesystem and partition as a tarball; sfdisk (http://linux.die.net/man/8/sfdisk) for saving and restoring partition tables; the NoMachine NX Client; partimage (http://www.partimage.org) for disk imaging at the disc block level; PeaZip (http://peazip.sourceforge.net) a graphical archive manager (IMHO very good).
Hi ,

We have several, 12 to be exact, HP ML350G5s running either ESX or ESXi. We bought the hardware from HP but we purchased our ESX server software from VMware resellers. I would like to monitor the RAID status of the HP controllers, Smart Array E200i. I've seen screen shots from other users showing the status of their direct connected storage on the Health Status page of the configuration tab. I don't get that information for my servers. I suspect that I need some type of RAID monitoring software from HP to get this status. Is this correct? If it is, do I go to the HP Web site to get it?

Thanks

Mine was dented and such but I returned it as well. I think Continuum got it then went on to give it to someone else. Its a mighty important totem to give away and allow to be used by others! Let them drink of the waters I mean beers.
Most forum points in a week

I thought those large numbers came from posters uploading informative documents (not necessarily links to documents) or procedures and getting points for the amount of people that access it.

I'm pretty sure the point system does not reward documents, no matter how highly rated or widely read. The document I linked to makes no mention of points for documents, and my own experience bears this out (I wrote a number of the most widely read docs on these forums, but I'm pretty sure I earned all my points via posts and correct/helpful awards). The point system certainly can't take into account the informative sites that a number of the top posters maintain on their own, outside of the forum.

Although points are a fine general indicator of knowledge/participation, focusing on points makes the community worse off because the points system rewards behaviors that don't help and does not reward behaviors that do.

Yes, as Ulli said - it's more of a statement that people like KevinG and Petr are no longer posting much/often, than a statement that I have been posting more. Although, being currently unemployed, it's sometimes easier to find the time to lurk and post here.
LUN serial numbers.

With ESX 3.x I think is impossible (for FC storage).
There isn't a correlation between storage LUN ID and ESX LUN ID.
In ESX4, maybe with some vendor add-on, could be possible.

I usually try to use different LUN size, work with VMFS label (to match the label on storage size), and add LUN, do rescan on all ESX, then add another, do rescan, ...
Booting Into a Virtual Machine?

If your hardware is supported by ESX you can use grub for a multiboot configuration.
First install your OS (and leave some un-partitioned space), then install ESX and manually set partition, then reconfigure grub.

Or you can use ESXi from a USB key (search in other discussion the way to build this key).

Are you think to a could computing solution?

Or are you think to a "easy to use" solution?
In this case embedd ESXi is the solution: you buy a server ready to run.
I have to amdit, I have noticed that most of the ESX "Experts" do have a bit of a big ol chip on their shoudlers.

The one I pay from time to time to help out, refuses ever to ask for help to solve an issue.

Yeah, I had a few unplanned self caused failover moments myself, nice to know it all works at least when it stays up / does what it's supposed to do.

I want to thank everyone for chiming in on this thread. I am engaged with a small business administration counselor to help me work through these things. I'll keep this thread alive as I move through the process.
Hello,

I have used it, and for some customers it does as required, for others we switched them to VMware Server 2 and they have been much happier. Each hypervisor has good and bad points. Each workload will be handled differently. The question is coming up with a set of tests that will work for the workload you want to use.

Best regards,
